Abstract:A viable platform for food packaging applications has evolved in the form of protein nanofibers with material properties. Through this work, a simple, extensible process of protein for amyloid fibrils formation was proposed. The addition of polyphenol was expected to improve its synergistic antibacterial properties. The isolate protein of soy and whey (SPI and WPI) were selected as model proteins with an acid-heat treatment for 5 h to prepare the nanofibrils. Protein molecules eventually lost their intrinsic structure, which was also followed by aggregation and degeneration. Atomic force microscopy was used to investigate how proteins' spherical and linear shapes changed over time. As the protein unfolded and intermolecular aggregation occurred, circular dichroism (CD) demonstrated that the protein's secondary structure altered from a-helix to β-sheet and random coils. Furthermore, the fibrous protein films' mechanical characteristics were enhanced, particularly the elongation (E) of amyloid SPI films, which increased from 33.50 % to 100.57 %. Additionally, the films' water solubility (WS) and water vapor permeability (WVP) were both decreased. In order to create an antibacterial edible film, vanillin was also added to the fibrous protein solution as a bacteriostatic agent. The results showed that the fibrous protein film demonstrated a great bacteriostatic action and retained good shape. Here we present this simple and efficient method to obtain robust, flexible films, which not only provides a strategy for films with good mechanical properties but also extends their antibacterial by adding a bacteriostatic agent to further provide a new idea for food packaging.

Abstract:The development of environment-friendly biodegradable materials has aroused widespread attention and interest. Herein, kilogram-scale poly(ethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PEF) was synthesized and incorporated into poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) via melt-compounding. Then, the PBAT/PEF blend films were prepared by the extrusion blowing method. The results showed that PEF could greatly improve the tensile performance and tear resistance of PBAT/PEF blend films. The superior mechanical properties were achieved in PBAT/PEF10 blend films with a tensile strength of 44.3 ± 2.9 MPa and an elongation at break of 900.5 ± 21.9%. Besides, the transmittance of oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapor sharply reduced by 78.8, 74, and 48.3% in comparison with those of a pure PBAT film, respectively. The inherent barrier characteristic of PEF and the enhanced bonding between PBAT and PEF contributed to the excellent gas and water vapor barrier performance. Furthermore, PBAT/PEF blend films were used for the fruit preservation tests. After a 15 day preservation, the freshness of fruits covered with PBAT/PEF films was well kept, showing great potentialin food packing applications.

Pea protein-p-coumaric acid conjugate-based antioxidant film: The relationship between protein structure and film properties after covalent bonding

Abstract:In this study, pea protein isolates (PPI) have been used to make conjugates by covalent binding with p-coumaric acid (p-CA), and the effect of conjugation on PPI structural characteristics and the structural, optical, mechanical, and physicochemical properties of conjugate-based films were investigated. The conjugation with p-CA unfolds the tertiary structure of PPI and significantly reduces the surface charge. A tendency of aggregation with increasing p-CA addition was proposed. The conjugate-based films show stronger tensile strength (TS) and better water barrier properties than PPI-based films. However, no significant improvement of the elongation at break (EAB) and thermal stability was found for conjugate-based films. FTIR spectroscopic and zeta-potential analyses indicated that such improved film properties could be attributed to the enhancement of hydrogen bonds and weakening of electrostatic repulsion between conjugate-conjugate. Additionally, the conjugates impart the antioxidant activity to the films as confirmed by DPPH scavenging capacity. This study demonstrates the potential of using pea protein-phenolic acid conjugate to make PPI-based films with improved mechanical properties, water barrier properties, and antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Pullulan-based composite films incorporated with bacterial cellulose (BC) and ferulic acid (FA) were prepared by solution casting method. The rheological, morphological, barrier, optical, anti-fogging, and antioxidant properties of pullulan-based composite films doped with BC and FA were investigated. The rheological results showed that all film-forming solution was pseudoplastic fluid and its viscosity increased with the increase of BC content. An appropriate BC (2 %) and FA were uniformly dispersed in pullulan to form uniform and dense composite films. With the increase of BC content, the roughness and opacity of composite films increased while their UV–vis barrier performance was improved by incorporating BC and FA. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis demonstrated that hydrogen bond interactions among pullulan, BC, and FA were found, and incorporating BC could increase the crystallinity of the composite films, thus enhancing their mechanical, barrier, hydrophobic, and thermal stability properties. Pullulan-based composite films incorporated with 2 % BC and FA (P-BC2-FA) showed better mechanical properties, water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide barrier performances, and its water contact angle value also increased compared with control, respectively. P-BC2-FA film showed superior anti-fogging and antioxidant activities. These results indicate that the P-BC2-FA films are expected to be a potential target of bioactive packaging.

Abstract:The passion fruit peel was subjected to a drying and pulverising process, after which the resulting powder was extracted using an ultrasonic‐assisted ethanol method. The extract was then freeze‐dried, resulting in the production of passion fruit peel extract (PFPE). PFPE was combined with dopamine (DA) to obtain PFPE/PDA solution, which was blended with hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) for the preparation and characterisation of the film. The film with the best overall performance was selected for freshness preservation experiments on bananas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of blending passion fruit peel extract (PFPE) with polydopamine (PDA) solution and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) to prepare the properties of PFPE/PDA/HPMC composite films for their application in fruit and vegetable packaging. PFPE was extracted by ultrasonic‐assisted extraction method, which is simple, easy to operate and has high extraction efficiency, PFPE and dopamine were subjected to PFPE/PDA solution preparation, which in turn led to the preparation of HPMC, PFPE/PDA/HPMC films at different concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%), and 10% PDA/HPMC and PFPE/HPMC films were prepared with PDA and PFPE solutions, respectively. The interactions between the components in the films were analysed by infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffractometer, and the colour, mechanical properties, barrier properties and antioxidant activity of the films were determined. The results showed that the addition of PFPE/PDA solution had a positive effect on the performance of the films. The tensile strength of the composite films was 8.21 MPa, the elongation at break was 85.02% and the water vapour transmission was 2.62 × 10−14 g·mm/(cm2·h·Pa) when the content of PFPE/PDA was 20% compared to that of HPMC films; the DPPH radical scavenging rate and hydroxyl radical scavenging rate of the films increased with the increase of PFPE/PDA concentration, and the DPPH radical scavenging rate of the film with 20% additive was 28.71% and the hydroxyl radical scavenging rate was 34.77%, which were much higher than that of the HPMC film. The simulated bananas were stored at room temperature together with the films and stored at 25°C and tested every day, and it was found that the bananas without packaging film began to show browning on the third day, while the film with 20% additive still did not show obvious browning on the fifth day, so the addition of PFPE/PDA could effectively delay the browning of bananas and prolong their shelf life. In summary, this study improves the use value of passion fruit peel waste and provides new effective packaging for fresh bananas, while it can also provide a new way for the development of degradable films from plant extracts.

Abstract:Chitosan/peptide films were prepared by incorporating peptides (0.4%, w/v) from soy, corn and caseins into chitosan films. The presence of peptides significantly affected the physical, antibacterial and antioxidative properties of chitosan films. Among these films, those containing corn peptide showed the best water vapor barrier properties, and the tensile strength and elongation at break increased to 24.80 Mpa and 23.94%, respectively. Characterization of surface hydrophobicity and thermal stability suggested the strongest intermolecular interactions between corn peptides and chitosan. Moreover, films containing casein peptides showed the highest antibacterial activity and radical scavenging activity. The DPPH scavenging rate of films containing casein peptides reached 46.11%, and ABTS scavenging rate reached 66.79%. These results indicate the chitosan/peptide films may be promising food packaging materials.

Plant Protein-Based Films for Food Packaging Applications

Abstract:The use of plastics for packaging across many industries has become a standard, however, in recent years there has been an increase in demand for more eco-friendly packaging alternatives. In this vein, the use of plant proteins in film formation has been studied extensively.1-2 Due to the strong mechanical properties obtained through the use of plant-based proteins, the biodegradability of such materials, and their economic efficiency, these proteins are of substantial interest in the effort to replace current synthetic packaging films.3 -5 In our work, we focus on combining both experimental and computational techniques in order to develop protein-based films for food packaging applications. By combing the two techniques, we aim to better understand the interactions of plant-based proteins with selected plasticizing modifiers in order to develop films with optimal mechanical properties. In our work we compare the interactions of selected modifiers with soy protein and zein protein from corn. In this regard, we apply various computational techniques, including protein-ligand docking6-7 and molecular modeling methods8-9 to assess the interactions and then compare our finding with experimental data1,3,10-11. By modeling how choice plasticizing modifiers interact differently with each protein, we aim to better formulate our films in order to achieve mechanical properties that compete with those of current synthetic packaging systems. Film Properties of Pectin Obtained from Various Fruits’ (Lemon, Pomelo, Pitaya) Peels

Abstract:Food by-products, as sources of high-value compounds, have shown great promise for formulating novel food packaging and edible films for food preservation. This work focused on extracting pectin from lemon, pomelo, and pitaya peels using an ethanol precipitation method. The degree of esterification and the monosaccharide composition of the extracted pectin were determined, and the antioxidant activity of the pectin was assessed. Subsequently, pectin-based films were prepared using the casting method, employing pectin from various sources. These films’ physical and mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) were assessed, and their microstructure and intermolecular interactions were examined using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results of this study demonstrate variations in the degree of esterification among the three pectin samples, with pomelo peel and lemon peel pectins exhibiting higher degrees of methylation compared to pectin from pitaya peel, which had a lower degree of methylation. However, no significant differences were observed regarding the films’ moisture content and water vapor permeability. Notably, the films made from pitaya peel pectin exhibited superior tensile strength and elongation at break to those derived from pomelo peel and lemon peel pectins. The pectin recovered from these fruit peels had great film properties and thus could be utilized for food packaging and edible films.
Quality Improvement of Pea Protein Isolate‐Based Film: Effect of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose on Film

Abstract:Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is cross‐linked with pea protein isolate (PPI) to prepare pea protein isolate/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (PPI/CMC) composite film, which effectively solves the functional limitation caused by the hydrophilicity of PPI film, paving the way for its effective application as a novel edible packaging film in conventional foods. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is cross‐linked with pea protein isolate (PPI) to prepare pea protein isolate/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (PPI/CMC) composite film by the diffusion method. The effects of the mass fraction of CMC on the mechanical properties and water resistance of PPI/CMC composite film are investigated. In the film containing 0.4% CMC, the water vapor permeability (1.43 × 10−7 g m (m2∙h∙Pa)−1) is significantly decreased, while the water contact angle value is elevated (55.76°). The tensile strength of the composite film is enhanced by 54.45%, while the elongation at break is increased by 23.30%. The film has excellent thermal stability and a homogenous structure. The remarkable changes may be attributed to new chemical interactions (hydrogen bonds) between CMC and PPI as revealed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Further, the composite film has great advantages in water resistance after comparison. The film is applied to the fresh bean skin, effectively blocking and reducing the tearing force between the fresh bean skin, and consequently easy separation after soaking in water for 20 min. Overall, the inclusion of CMC effectively solves the functional limitation caused by the hydrophilicity of PPI film, paving the way for its effective application as a novel edible packaging film in conventional foods.

Abstract:The pumpkin seeds protein (PSP) films have good gas barrier properties and elongation at break, buttheir inferior tensile strength and high moisture adsorption needed to be overcome. There are fewreports about modification of PSP films so far. This study was to investigate the effects ofdifferent ratios (0:5, 1:4, 1.5:3.5, 2:3, 2.5:2.5 and 5:0) of pea starch (PS)/ pumpkin seeds protein(PSP) on the morphology, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability (WVP), optical properties,hydrophobicity, and oil resistance of blend films. According to the results, the scanning electronmicrographs of surface and cross-sections indicated the good biocompatibility between PS and PSP.The tensile strength was enhanced from 5.02 MPa to 16.41 MPa with the incorporation of PS at 40%level, but the elongation at break was decreased meanwhile. Abstract:<p>Starch can be commercially prepared into edible and biodegradable packaging via plasticization and extrusion. However, plasticized starch has poor stability in blown-film extrusion processability and storage properties which can be improved by combinations with protein. Edible films were developed from acetylated cassava starch (AS) and pea protein isolate (PI) using conventional blown-film extrusion. Films with PI up to 20 % were determined for physical, thermal and barrier properties and stability for oil packaging. PI stabilized films during blown-extrusion but decreased flexibility due to strong inter- and intra-molecular interaction with non-homogeneity of AS-PI blend matrices. Protein dispersed in AS matrices at low PI and formed continuous networks at 20 % which led to increased tensile strength. Increase in PI decreased solubility and light transmission but increased protein aggregation and improved crystallinity, surface hydrophobicity and barrier properties against water vapor and oxygen. Increase in PI also reduced glass transition and relaxation temperatures of AS-PI blends. Heat-sealed AS and AS-PI sachets showed effective protection for soybean and olive oil stored for 3 months at different humidities. PI blending effectively prevented humidity-induced shrinkage of AS film (up to 55 %) and enhanced polymer-glycerol interaction which improved thermal stability. Blending of starch and plant-derived pea protein effectively improved blown-film processability and barrier properties for oil-based food products.</p>

Abstract:Most conventional plastic wraps for food packing and preservation have limited flexibility and relatively unique functions, seriously limiting their practical uses. However, smart and sustainable polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF) polyester is currently employed for construction composite films to overcome this limitation. Herein, the fabrication of bio-based PEF/carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs) blends films using PEF and CCNFs by a simple method involving layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly polymerization with exceptional mechanical and interfacial properties. In particular, the mechanical results revealed that the CP3 (1.0 wt% CCNFs) composite film had excellent mechanical properties like tensile strength (69.0 MPa), Young’s modulus (4.3 GPa), and toughness (1.26 MJ/m3), which is markedly higher than that of pure PEF film. Besides, the barrier results also demonstrated that CP3 blend film reduced the CO2 and O2 barriers by 13.4% and 11.2%, respectively, compared to pure PEF film. Consequently, FTIR, XPS, SEM/EDS, and AFM characterizations provide insight into the chemical composition, elemental distribution, morphology, and structural properties of CCNF that directly affect the PEF/CCNF composite. Notably, the barrier properties and fruit experiments revealed CP3 composite film, and the shelf life of fresh mangoes was extended by at least one week under ambient conditions (i.e., a relative humidity of 90–95%, a temperature of 30 °C, and natural light). These results indicate the practical use of CP3 composite film as a food packaging in next-generation, well-coated preservation films.

Tailoring Pectin-PLA Bilayer Film for Optimal Properties as a Food Pouch Material

Abstract:This study focuses on developing a biodegradable film using a novel hybrid citrus peel pectin. A bilayer approach with PLA was proposed and optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to complement pectin films' mechanical and barrier property limitations. The optimized film composition (2.90 g PLA and 1.96 g pectin) showed enhanced mechanical strength with a tensile strength (TS) of 7.04 MPa and an elongation at break (EAB) of 462.63%. In addition, it demonstrated lower water vapor (1.45 × 10−10 g/msPa), oxygen (2.79 × 10−7 g/ms) permeability, and solubility (23.53%). Compared to single-layer pectin films, the optimized bilayer film had a 25% increased thickness, significantly improved water barrier (3806 times lower) and oxygen barrier (3.68 times lower) properties, and 22.38 times higher stretchability, attributed to hydrogen bond formation, as confirmed by FTIR analysis. The bilayer film, effectively protected against UV and visible light, could be a barrier against light-induced lipid oxidation. Moreover, it demonstrated superior seal efficiency, ensuring secure sealing in practical applications. The bilayer pouch containing mustard dressing exhibited stable sealing with no leakage after immersion in hot water and ethanol, making it suitable for secure food pouch packaging.

Two-Level Circumferential Lumbar Fusion Comparing Midline and Paraspinal Posterior Approach: 5-Year Interim Outcomes of a Randomized, Blinded, Prospective Study

Abstract:Study Design: A prospective randomized and blinded comparative study of 2 patient groups with >5-year follow-up. Objective: To compare the clinical outcomes and postoperative posterior muscle changes in patients with advanced degenerative disk disease undergoing 2-level circumferential spinal fusion using a posterior midline versus a paraspinal approach. Summary of Background Data: Lumbar spinal fusion is often performed using a circumferential (anterior and posterior) technique. Paraspinal muscle alterations occur during the retraction of the muscles required for posterior instrumentation and fusion bed preparation, which may adversely affect outcomes. Methods: Patients with advanced 2-level lumbar degenerative disk disease were randomized into 2 groups of 25 each for the approach to the posterior spine for their anterior-posterior fusion. A midline posterior skin incision was universal, but all patients were blinded to the fascial incision and exposure to the posterior spine. All had intertransverse and facet joint fusions with pedicle screw instrumentation. Outcomes (visual analog back and leg pain scale, pain drawing, Oswestry disability index, and self-assessment of procedure success) were assessed at various periods postoperatively. Preoperative and >1-year postoperative magnetic resonance images (MRI), including paraspinal muscles, were read by a radiologist who was blinded to the surgical approach and outcomes. Results: No difference in operative time, blood loss, implant costs, or any other intraoperative parameter existed between the 2 patient groups. Although clinical improvement for all outcome scales was significant for both groups postoperatively, there was no difference between groups. Postoperative MRI T2 relaxation values were significantly increased at the operative levels and distally, but the changes were similar for both groups. Conclusions: Midline and paraspinal approaches result in similar outcomes in 2-level spinal fusions. We were unable to demonstrate that a paraspinal muscle-splitting approach to 2-level fusion was superior to the muscle-stripping midline approach. However, the study has low statistical power.
Development of antioxidant bilayer films based on polyethylene, gelatin and fruit peel extracts for food packing (pdf packaging)

Abstract:In this research, utilization of agricultural by-products as a source of natural antioxidant was developed for an active packaging system. In the first objective, four types of by-products namely, jackfruit peels (JPE), mango peels (MPE), pineapple peels (PPE), and papaya peels (YPE) in the form of extracts were incorporated into fish gelatin films to determine their physical and antioxidant properties. Films with three different concentrations of extracts (1, 3 and 5%) were prepared by solution casting method. Increasing concentration of extracts up to 5% produced thicker, colored, good tensile strength and less flexible films. It also showed an improvement in water permeability with less solubility. Although all films have potential to be developed into active packaging, gelatin based film with 5% MPE was more outstanding in availability of phenolic compounds and its antioxidant performances. Therefore, in the second objective, 5% MPE-gelatin based film was developed into bilayer active packaging by casting onto the PE films at 10 μm (PE/G10), 20 μm (PE/G20), 40 μm (PE/G40), and 60 μm (PE/G60). Bilayer films also showed compatibility structure without any separation between the PE and gelatin active layer. Thicker coatings influenced the reduction (p≤0.05) of the total phenolic content (TPC) values. Besides, thicker coating layer had improved the transparency and the antioxidant ability but increased (p≤0.05) the water vapor permeability. Therefore, it can be suggested that bilayer film is suitable for low water activity of food products. In the third objective, PE/G60 was used to determine the effectiveness of the bilayer films on maintaining or controlling the quality of margarine during storage at 4 °C and 25 °C. Results observed that margarine packed in PE/G60 at 4 °C able to inhibit lipid oxidation during 28 days of storage. The bilayer material affects the color changes in margarine with no significant (p>0.05) differences were observed on pH of margarine for both temperatures. This concluded that 5% MPE at 60 μm was suitable to be developed into bilayer films and had the potential as an antioxidant packaging for high lipid product.

Abstract:The use of fish waste as raw material in producing gelatin becomes important when it is related to the halal perspective. Sea bass skin contains high protein, especially collagen protein which can be used as the main component of edible film. An edible film made from gelatin of fish skin usually lacks water vapour transmission due to its hydrophilic properties. Modification of formula in producing an edible film from fish gelatin with the addition of lipid such palmitic acid (PA treatment) and soybean protein isolate (SPI treatment) can affect the characteristics of the edible film resulted. This study was aimed to evaluate the chemical (solubility, water vapour permeability) and physical characteristics (thickness, tensile strength, per cent elongation, SEM) of an edible film made from gelatin with the addition of palmitic acid and soybean protein isolate with different concentration. The results showed that edible films with SPI addition yield the best film thickness ( 3.92 MPa) according to the Japanese Industrial Standard. The per cent elongation of both films with PA (21.3-34.44%) and SPI (36.06-117.53%) addition decreased with increasing concentration, but SPI generally gave higher elongation compared to PA. The addition of SPI gave lower solubility and higher water vapour transmission values compared to PA, however, the addition of 4.5% of PA gave the lowest water vapour transmission (5.416 g/m2 h). Therefore, the best treatment in this study was concluded to be 4% of SPI addition based on the best thickness, per cent elongation, water vapour transmission and solubility results.

Abstract:In light of the dangers to human health posed by the use of plastic films for food preservation, new functional films derived from non-toxic and rich in antioxidant biosources must be developed. Chitosan (CH)-based active antioxidant films were developed by infused with halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and 5, 10, and 20% of Citrus limetta pomace extract (LPE) (v/v % of film forming solution). An increase in the LPE amount resulted in films with increased thickness. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed the smooth, compact, and dense nature of the CH-LPE films and the uniform dispersion of HNT. An X-ray diffraction study revealed the crystallinity of CH/HNT/LPE films was greater than that of CH film. CH films with LPE possessed a better elongation ratio (maximum of 31.64%) with reduced tensile strength than pure CH also affected the water vapor permeability of the film. The CH film with the addition of HNT and LPE (20% v/v) was optimal for producing functional films with 80.42% antioxidant properties. Within the context of the food processing sector, CH/HNT/LPE films have the potential to be utilized as active packaging material in order to improve the oxidative stability of lipids.

Gellan gum and pullulan-based films with triple functionalities of antioxidant, antibacterial and freshness indication properties for food packaging

Abstract:The objective of this research was to fabricate pH-responsive and active films based on gellan gum (GG) and pullulan (PL) with extracts of Broussonetia papyrifera fruits (BPFE) and leaves (BPLE) by a casting method. Results indicated that the extracts had good compatibility with GG and PL, which were uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. The incorporation of BPFE and BPLE increased the thickness, UV-vis barrier property, mechanical strength, thermal stability and moisture content of the films, while decreasing the water contact angle. Notably, the films exhibited enhanced antioxidant properties, with maximum radical scavenging rates of 77.45 % using 2,2 Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 66.21 % using 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid). The antibacterial capability of the films also increased significantly after adding BPLE and BPFE. The results of XRD and FTIR showed that BPFE was bound to GG and PL by hydrogen bond. The release behavior of BPFE from the films agreed best with the first-level kinetic model. Furthermore, the films displayed obvious color responses to ammonia gas and different pH environments. Simultaneously, the films were applied to monitor the freshness of Pelteobagrus fulvidraco fish. The color parameters of the films demonstrated high correlations with the freshness indexes measured through standard laboratory procedures.

Abstract:Biodegradable chitosan-based films containing different concentrations of jatobá fruit peel extract (0.0%, 0.04%, 0.07%, 0.1% and 0.3%) were prepared and evaluated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, physicochemical, morphological and thermal properties. The extract from jatoba fruit peel was obtained and incorporated into formulations of chitosan films. The films were characterized for thickness, moisture, solubility, water vapor permeability, optical properties, color and morphology. Also, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, in vitro antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity were performed. The addition of extract at increasing concentrations increased the in vitro antioxidant activity by about 9–60 times compared with the film without extract. Films with lower extract concentrations were more effective at inhibiting nine bacterial strains, with emphasis on Escherichia coli (95.0% inhibition), Bacillus cereus (92.5% inhibition), Bacillus subtilis (96.5% inhibition), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (94.4% inhibition), Salmonella Typhimurium (90.4% inhibition) and Salmonella Enteritidis (93.9% inhibition). Addition of the extract improved the physical properties of the film, such as moisture, solubility, WVP and luminosity. The thermal stability of the films was slightly reduced with addition of extract at increasing concentrations. Films incorporating jatobá fruit peel extract showed potential utility as 'green' bioactive, biodegradable packaging, an alternative to packaging containing petroleum derivatives.
