Abstract:In this paper, the electrocatalytic efficiency of bi-metallic organic framework compounds grown on nickel foam (NF) has been enhanced by adjusting the amount of iron and cobalt precursors. A unique wedge-like morphology was observed in Fe-1-Co-1-MOF. The optimized Fe-1-Co-1-MOF (1:1 of molar ratio of iron to cobalt) exhibits superior catalytic activity to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a lowest overpotential of only 233 mV at a current density of 10 mA.cm(-2) and the higher current density of 400 mA.cm(-2) can be provided at overpotential of 264 mV. The Tafel slope in alkaline aqueous solutions was 24.4 mV.dec(-1). After 10 h of continuous operation, the catalyst showed only a slight loss of current density at 50 mA.cm(-2). This success may be attributed to synergy between the bi-metallic organic framework catalyst and the large pores of conductive nickel foam, as well as the synergistic effect between the two phases molecules of the bi-metallic organic framework metal. Abstract:Rationally designing highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is exceedingly essential for ecologically sustainable development, but is still a principal research challenge due to the sluggish four-electron kinetics. Due to their structural diversity and ultra-high surface area, metal–organic framework (MOF) ultrathin nanosheets have expected to provide not only more accessible active sites, but also faster mass transfer and diffusion and have been realized as OER electrocatalysts. Therefore, we develop the controllable synthesis of Co-based MOF ultrathin nanosheets (NMOF-Co) incorporated with different-valence Fe ions, which are used as a high-performance electrocatalyst via a post-synthetic modification method. The binary metal electrocatalyst demonstrated more effective kinetics than the single metal electrocatalysts. By virtue, the obtained electrocatalyst with a uniform thickness of ~4.0 nm (defined as (Fe(II)1Fe(III)1)0.6/NMOF-Co) sets in at potential of only 1.56 V with small Tafel slope of 50 mVdec-1, which is more superb than that of RuO2 and bulk material Fe(II)1Fe(III)1)0.6/Bulk-MOF-Co. The findings show that the structure of ultrathin nanosheets and the Fe incorporation are critical to the outstanding performance of MOF nanosheets for tuning the electrocatalytic activity, which is of great significance in the field of MOF electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Rational design of facile and low-cost efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to solve the energy crisis. Benefiting from in situ self-reconstruction from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to (oxy)hydroxides in alkaline electrolytes, MOFs have become alternative OER catalysts. Thus, Fe-doped Co-MOF nanosheets (Co-MOF/Fe) were prepared and utilized straightforwardly as OER electrocatalysts. CoFe-layered bimetallic hydroxides (CoFe-LDHs) with abundant active sites are obtained from in situ conversion of Co-MOF/Fe after etching by the KOH electrolyte, which are generally actual active species. Meanwhile, the introduction of Fe ions will also produce a synergistic effect that greatly improves the electrocatalytic OER performance. The optimized catalyst (Co-MOF/Fe10) shows exceptional OER activity (η10 = 260 mV) and excellent durability over 50 h. The outstanding OER performance of Co-MOF/Fe10 can also be reflected in the two-electrode hydrolyzer (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). This study offers a pathway to probe the catalytic mechanism of MOFs and the rational construction of efficient MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Electron modulation presents a captivating approach to fabricate efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains a challenging undertaking. In this study, we propose an effective strategy to regulate the electronic structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by the construction of MOF‐on‐MOF heterogeneous architectures. As a representative heterogeneous architectures, MOF‐74 on MOF‐274 hybrids are in‐situ prepared on three‐dimensional (3D) metal substrates (NiFe alloy foam (NFF)) via a two‐step self‐assembly method, resulting in MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. Through a combination of spectroscopic and theory calculation, our study unveils the successful modulation of the electronic property of MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF. This modulation arises from the phase conjugation of the two MOFs and the synergistic effect of the multi‐metallic centers (Ni and Fe). Consequently, MOF‐(74 + 274)@NFF exhibits excellent OER activity, displaying ultralow overpotentials of 198 and 223 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the 1.0 and 0.1 M KOH solutions, respectively. Abstract:The construction of efficient, durable, and non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great value but challenging. Herein, a facile method is developed to synthesize a series of trimetallic (W/Co/Fe) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived carbon nanoflakes (CNF) with various Fe content, and an Fe-dependent volcano-type plot can be drawn out for WCoFex-CNF. The optimized WCoFe0.3-CNF (when the feed ratio of Fe/Co is 0.3) demonstrates superior electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential of only 254 mV@10 mA cm(-2) and excellent durability of 100 h. Further researches show that appropriate amount of iron doping can regulate the electronic structure, resulting in a favorable synergistic environment. This method may stimulate the exploration of electrocatalysts by utilizing MOFs as precursors while realizing electronic modulation by multimetal doping.

Abstract:Highly efficient and stable earth-abundant metal electrocatalysts are of great significance for improving water splitting systems and rechargeable metal–air batteries, in which the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a central part. Among other strategies, anchoring metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) onto conductive materials has proven fruitful towards enhancing their OER performance. Here we explore two strategies for covalent functionalization of graphene flakes as templates for in situ growth of a bimetallic MOF (NiCo-H 2 bpydc) that is formed using 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid as the organic linker, and Ni 2+ / Co 2+ (1:1) as the metal nodes. The graphene template modified with low density functional groups preserves the original octahedral shape of 3D NiCo-H 2 bpydc, while functionalization with high density functional groups transforms the MOF octahedra into nanoflowers with 'desert rose' morphology, leading to increased accessible active sites, electric conductivity and enlarged active surface area, thus boosting the OER performance with a small overpotential (241mV) at 10 mA cm -2 in alkaline solution. This synthetic strategy therefore presents an efficient pathway towards controlling morphology and properties of graphene supported electrocatalytic materials with excellent OER performance.

Abstract:Ultrathin Bimetal MOF nanosheets (BMOFNs) are regarded as effective electrocatalyst for Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of their abundance of coordinatively unsaturated metal atoms, enhanced mass permeability and coupling effect between bimetals, while the limited conductivity and stability severely hinders their widespread application. Here, we develop an in situ semi-sacrificial template-assisted strategy to grow ultrathin BMOFNs on NiCo-LDH to construct non-noble metal electrocatalysts that are both active and stable. The optimized NiCo-LDH@MOFs heterostructure exhibits a superior electrocatalytic activity with accelerated electronic transfer and significantly enhanced durability of over 300 h. An advanced AFM-IR technology is introduced for the first time to investigate the formation of the 2D-2D heterogeneous structure in NiCo-LDH@MOFs, providing insights into the morphology-structure-composition evolution of the electrocatalyst at a nanoscale. This work demonstrates an in-situ growth strategy to achieve high-performance ultrathin MOF-based electrocatalysts, and provides advanced combinatorial characterization techniques to monitor the material growth process.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used as precursors due to their tunable morphology and high specific surface area. Molybdenum nitride (MoN) and molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) are promising catalyst materials with electronic structures similar to the noble metal platinum. However, the preparation and modification of the composite systems comprising MoN and Mo2C are complex, often leading to significant agglomeration and limiting their application in various catalytic fields. In this work, we designed and developed a novel bimetallic Co-MOFs-Mo with a stable and unique framework morphology. By varying the organic ligand content, we controlled the morphology and enhanced the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity through Mo doping. Using the Co-MOFs-Mo sample as the Co source, we fabricated a Co-MoxN/Mo2C catalytic material with a special framework structure. Compared to Mo2N and Mo2N/Mo2C, this catalyst exhibits a larger specific surface area and superior performance in both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Co-MoxN/Mo2C catalyst achieves an HER overpotential of 297 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 and an OER overpotential of 480 mV at 20 mA·cm-2. This research provides valuable insights into the rational design of molybdenum-based noble-metal-free catalyst materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are class of promising heterogeneous catalysis, but usually not directly employed for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to manipulating difficultly their composition and morphology. Herein, we present a facile one-pot solvothermal method to successfully synthesize diverse bimetallic organic framework {[MFe(tda)(H2O)]n (M = Mn/Co/Ni), tda = thiodiacetate}. Significantly, the morphology of [MFe(tda)(H2O)]n can be efficiently changed by regulating metal components. Among them, [NiFe(tda)(H2O)]n with unique pompon-like architecture not only can be directly used as electrocatalyst, but also delivers extraordinary OER performance with low overpotential of 264 mV at current density of 10 mA cm-2 in O2-saturated 1 M KOH solution, low Tafel slope of 53.9 mV dec- 1, and high durability after long-term testing. In addition, the effect of mixed ligands and metal ratio on morphology has also been investigated, which demonstrates the hierarchical structure of prepared materials plays a crucial role in enhancing OER activity.
Ultrafast transformation of metal-organic frameworks into advanced oxygen evolution electrocatalysts with good universality and scalability

Abstract:Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for energy conversion technologies. Herein, an ultrafast room-temperature method is demonstrated to convert bimetallic CoNi metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into high-performance OER catalysts consisting of Fe incorporated CoNi hydroxides and MOFs (denoted as Fe-CoNi MOFs). This straightforward approach not only introduces OER-favorable Fe into the catalyst to ameliorate the electronic conductivity for rapid charge transfer, but also engineers the CoNi MOFs into hierarchical micro-nano architectures with high density of active sites and rich boundary defects. Consequently, the Fe-CoNi MOFs catalyst exhibits excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 230 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a high turnover frequency of 2.75 s-1 at an overpotential of 340 mV, along with superior durability during 100 h operation in 1 M KOH. Further analyses reveal that in-situ formed metal oxyhydroxides on the catalyst surface are the real OER active species, and the incorporated Fe effectively regulates the local electronic configurations of neighboring Co site for more favorable adsorption of *OH intermediate to reduce the energy barrier of the rate-determining step. This ultrafast Fe incorporation method is also successfully applied to boost the OER performance of many other MOFs as well as to synthesize large-size electrodes. With good universality and scalability, this work opens up a cost-effective route to steer MOF-based materials into advanced nanoarchitectures towards energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The modulation of morphological structure associated with the change of metal composition within metal organic framework (MOF) is a facile and effective strategy to accelerate the charge transfer for enhancing the catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we realized the morphological change of MOF by manipulating the Co composition within bimetallic CoxFe1-x-MOF. Impressively, the CoxFe1-x-MOFs with the one-dimensional nanorod array structure promoted the reaction kinetics of the catalysts. The optimized Co0.8Fe0.2-MOF composition showed a low overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a small Tafel slope of 36.3 mV/dec, which are superior than those of commercially RuO2 electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The design and preparation of outstanding catalysts are significant for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which performs a crucial function in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we have prepared metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets on a nickel foam (NF) substrate via a two-step procedure including a hydrothermal reaction and an in situ transformation process. As for the anodic OER process, the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with a small overpotential of 265 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and impressive long-term catalytic durability and stability without obvious deactivation. The superior electrocatalytic performance of the obtained NiFe-MOF@NF material is mainly due to the substantial active metal centres, enhanced electrical conductivity and favorable kinetics. We believe that the strategy will be of great benefit to the development of highly efficient metal electrocatalysts, and will pave the way for the application of metal catalysts in the OER.

Abstract:The anchor of functional materials on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanosheets to precisely construct fascinated heterostructures for electrocatalysis is highly promising but challenging owing to the different interfacial thermodynamics and nucleation kinetics. In this work, we design and synthesize ultrafine metal oxides nanoparticles (NPs) homogenously distributed on cobalt-based MOF (Co-MOF) nanosheets for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by a facile solvothermal reaction and subsequent partially controlled pyrolysis. The ultrafine Co3O4 NPs with a particle size of about 1.5 nm can be obtained from the dispersed elemental Co in Co-MOF and uniformly generated on the surface of the MOF, which is crucial for the formation of the unique heterostructure. The well-designed Co-MOF-350 exhibits an efficient electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 239 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 63 mV dec−1, and an outstanding catalytic stability for OER, much superior to the pure Co-MOF and Co3O4 electrocatalyst. The intriguing OER performance mainly originates from the desirable combination of the abundant active sites, the extended electron transport channel between ultrafine metal oxides and Co-MOF nanosheets. More importantly, the work will help to design novel heteroarchitectured MOFs-based composites as efficient and robust electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:The incorporation of iron into the cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) modifies the electronic environment and the resulting bimetallic MOF exhibits an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Co-MOF, Fe-MOF, and different ratios of bimetallic Co-Fe-MOFs using 2,2'-bipyridine 4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H 2 bpdc) are prepared by a single-step hydrothermal process. The MOFs are evaluated by necessary spectroscopy and microscopy techniques like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The incorporation of Fe 3+ into the Co-MOF significantly increases the electrocatalytic activity of the resulting bimetallic Co-Fe-MOF towards the OER. An optimized bimetallic MOF having the Co:Fe ratio of 2:1 shows the lowest overpotential (310 mV) to realize the 0.01 A.cm -2 current density and the lowest Tafel slope of 53 mV/dec with excellent durability in comparison to the Co-MOF, Fe-MOF, and the state-of-the-art catalyst, RuO 2 . Further, this manuscript addresses the inherent electrocatalytic properties of MOFs-based electrocatalysts and demonstrates their possible exploitation in water electrolysis.
Hierarchical trimetallic Co-Ni-Fe oxides derived from core-shell structured metal-organic frameworks for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as promising precursors to construct efficient non-noble metal electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a Co-Ni-Fe spinel oxide-carbonitrides hybrids (CoNiFeOx-NC) electrocatalyst with hierarchical structure was synthesized from Fe-MIL-101-NH2 through a unique ion-exchange based strategy. The ion exchange of Fe-MIL-101-NH2 with both Ni and Co ions induced a hierarchically structured 2-D ternary metal MOF shell layer encapsulated 3-D octahedral MOF crystals as a core. This prevents the collapse of MOF frameworks during the air calcination process and affords highly porous structure and large surface area. Additionally, the unique combination of Co-Ni-Fe in spinel oxides derived from calcination of the hierarchically structured core-shell MOF provides a favorable electronic environment for the adsorption of OER intermediates, which was further verified by the XPS characterizations and DFT calculations. DFT study revealed the Ni-Co coordinated Oh sites in the MFe2O4 reverse spinel structures as the main active sites, which tuned the binding strength of oxygen species with a catalyst through electron transfer of Fe→Co→Ni, thereby lowered the energy barriers for OER. As a result, the rationally designed CoNiFeOx-NC catalyst manifests superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 265 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and a decent Tafel slope of 64.1 mV dec-1. The ion-exchange based strategy may serve as a versatile platform for rational design and synthesis of multi-metallic MOF derived electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A simple self‐templated design strategy is established to obtain two kinds of ternary metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), CoCu‐NiMOF nanosheets (MNs) and microflowers (MFs), which demonstrate the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance based on the Co–Cu concerted active sites, along with a strong synergistic effect of Ni node, thereby accelerating the OER catalytic rate. Multivariate metal–organic framework (MOF) is an ideal electrocatalytic material due to the synergistic effect of multiple metal active sites. In this study, a series of ternary M‐NiMOF (M = Co, Cu) through a simple self‐templated strategy that the Co/Cu MOF isomorphically grows in situ on the surface of NiMOF is designed. Owing to the electron rearrange of adjacent metals, the ternary CoCu‐NiMOFs demonstrate the improved intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. At optimized conditions, the ternary Co3Cu‐Ni2MOFs nanosheets give the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 288 mV with a Tafel slope of 87 mV dec−1, which is superior to that of bimetallic nanosheet and ternary microflowers. The low free energy change of potential‐determining step identifies that the OER process is favorable at Cu–Co concerted sites along with strong synergistic effect of Ni nodes. Partially oxidized metal sites also reduce the electron density, thus accelerating the OER catalytic rate. The self‐templated strategy provides a universal tool to design multivariate MOF electrocatalysts for highly efficient energy transduction.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts to reduce overpotentials is vital for accelerating the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes. Herein, we demonstrate ultrathin heterogeneous nanosheets as a promising OER electrocatalyst, which are composed of ultrafine CoFeOx nanoparticles and a monolayered CoN4-based metal–organic framework (MOF) matrix. The embedding of such inorganic nanoparticles in the MOF lattice creates metal Co sites located at the CoFeOx/MOF interfaces. Structural characterization and analysis indicated a higher valence and changed 3d electronic configuration for the interfacial Co in contrast to the CoN4 sites. Furthermore, theoretical calculations reveal the high activity of interfacial Co sites for OER. Electrochemical studies confirm that the ultrathin heterogeneous nanosheets deposited on carbon cloth can achieve an excellent electrocatalytic OER performance with a low overpotential of 232 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 with good stability. This work provides insights on the development of ultrathin OER heterocatalysts with highly active interfaces of inorganic units and MOFs.

Abstract:Developing efficient trifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and long durability is extraordinarily desirable. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal self-sacrificial templates, and their derived electrocatalysts are promising for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, Fe-based MOFs with well-aligned morphologies have been synthesized by elaborately tuning the competitive coordinated cations from diverse metal sources and solvent systems through a one-step solvothermal method. In this process, the competitive coordination with the metal sites between the ligands and the solvent molecules allows the feasibility to regulate the morphologies of these MOF precursors. After pyrolysis, the resulting Fe2O3 compounds not only inherit the morphologies of the precursors, but also expose different active lattice planes, producing disparate intrinsic active sites. Particularly, the concave octahedral (CO)-Fe2O3 with higher active facets and more accessible surface-active sites exhibits a superior electrocatalytic activity and stability for ORR, OER and HER compared with other morphologies and structures. This competitive coordination strategy paves an innovative and feasible pathway for morphology- and structure-controlled MOFs derivatives with tailored catalytic centers toward electrochemical energy storage and convention.

Abstract:Proposing a direct pathway combining theoretical prediction with anchoring high‐valence Mo on CoMOF@NF to reveal the mechanism of the OER reaction. Systematically investigate the catalytic mechanism and the relationship between the electrocatalytic performance of Mo‐CoMOF@NF and its electronic microstructure and conductivity. Study of catalyst OER performance by quantitative components. The electrocatalyst exhibits excellent long‐term stability. Elucidating the correlation of active sites and catalytic activity in multi‐component metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is key to understanding the mechanism of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet it remains nebulous. Herein, a direct pathway combining theoretical prediction with anchoring high‐valence metals is proposed on MOFs to reveal the mechanism of the OER reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) predicts that the co‐modulation by Mo and Co atoms can enhance the conductance of CoMOF and optimize the adsorption‐free energies of the OER intermediates. Guided by the theoretical prediction, the Co‐based MOFs grown on Ni foams are doped with high valence Mo, which is used as model catalysts for the quantitative study of the composition‐dependent OER performance. With Co/Mo in the ratio of 5:1 for the highest OER activity (impressively overpotential of 324 mV at 100 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 96.07 mV dec−1) and excellent stability (maintains for 200 h at 100 mA cm−2), the catalysts in this work is superior to commercial benchmarks electrocatalysts (RuO2/NF, 420 mV, 199.12 mV dec−1). This work sheds light on the tailoring of the active sites of MOFs, which is highly correlated with the activity of the OER.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as an state-of-the-art electrocatalyst, have been shown an efficient alternative to precious metals. Herein, we have synthesized a series of mixed Fe-Co-MOFs (MFC-MOFs) with low crystallinity by a simple one-step solvothermal method, which can be applied as direct electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction. The broadening and weakened XRD diffraction peaks and the diffused ring in SAED reveal the low-crystalline characteristic of MFC-MOFs. The shifted Co 2p3/2 and Fe 2p3/2 peaks in XPS confirm the redistribution of local electrons in MFC-MOFs. The formation of more favorable Co in higher valence state is confirmed in XPS, which is more beneficial to be transformed into active OOH-like intermediates for OER. The optimal MFC-MOFs exhibits a lower overpotential at 10 mA cm−2, which decreases in 212 and 140 mV compared to that of Fe-MOFs and Co-MOFs, respectively. Meanwhile, a remarkably low Tafel slope (37 mV dec−1) and a favorable long-term stability (over 20 h) are obtained on the MFC-MOFs, which are all much superior to those of the as-synthesized RuO2. The enhanced catalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the inter-molecular synergy between Co-MOFs and Fe-MOFs, which affords MFC-MOFs low-crystalline structure and enlarged surface area. The optimized structure in return promotes the exposure of more active sites and remarkably improves the charge transfer capability. Overall, the design strategy based on the inter-molecular synergistic interactions and low-crystalline structure are worthy to be extended to increase the stability, catalytic active sites and electron transfer ability of mixed-node MOF electrocatalysts.
