Abstract:ParSCo (Parasitology Summer Course) is an intense, 1-week-long summer course organized by the Parasitology Unit of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bari, Italy, with the support of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP), the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC) and Parasites and Vectors . The course, which is conducted in southern Italy, is planned for parasitologists and post-graduate students working in the field of parasitology. The course consists of theoretical and practical lessons, which include the collection, identification and diagnosis of parasites of pets, livestock and wildlife. The participants in ParSCo are afforded the opportunity to be involved in clinical examination and sample collection for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases (e.g. leishmaniosis, thelaziosis and many tick-borne diseases) present in the Mediterranean Basin. The course is conducted at Casa di Caccia , a hunting lodge situated in the Gallipoli Cognato Forest near the Basento River in the Basilicata region in southern Italy. In addition to the training purpose, ParSCo is a great opportunity for sharing knowledge and expertise while becoming part of the parasitology community in a pleasant environment. In this editorial, we share some information and celebrate 10 years of ParSCo, looking forward to forthcoming sessions of this unique parasitology summer course.

Abstract:This manuscript commemorates the 100th anniversary of APMIS, highlighting its evolution from a regional journal, founded in 1924 as Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica, to an international platform fostering global collaboration in pathology, microbiology, and immunology. The journal's inception was driven by Ulrik Quensel's vision in 1919, leading to the establishment of the Northern Pathological Society and the launch of the journal in 1924. APMIS has consistently published landmark research, including significant contributions from prominent. These studies have advanced understanding in fields such as pathology, microbiology, and immunology. The journal expanded its scope in the 1970s to include immunology, rebranding as APMIS in the mid‐1980s. Recent decades have seen a continued commitment to cutting‐edge research and an increasing impact factor. As APMIS transitions to an Open Access model under Wiley, it will be renamed the PMI Journal (Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology) to reflect its global reach and dedication to scientific excellence. This centennial celebration acknowledges the contributions of editors, authors, and readers, looking forward to future advancements in biomedical research.

Abstract:Mycopathologia was founded in 1938 to 'diffuse the understanding of fungal diseases in man and animals among mycologists.' This was an important mission considering that pathogenic fungi for humans and animals represent a tiny minority of the estimated 1.5-5 million fungal inhabitants on Earth. These pathogens have diverged from the usual saprotrophic lifestyles of most fungi to colonize and infect humans and animals. Medical and veterinary mycology is the subdiscipline of microbiology that dwells into the mysteries of parasitic, fungal lifestyles. Among the oldest continuing scientific publications on the subject, Mycopathologia had its share of 'classic papers' since the first issue was published in 1938. An analysis of the eight decades of notable contributions reveals many facets of host-pathogen interactions among 183 volumes comprising about 6885 articles. We have analyzed the impact and relevance of this body of work using a combination of citation tools (Google Scholar and Scopus) since no single citation metric gives an inclusive perspective. Among the highly cited Mycopathologia publications, those on experimental mycology accounted for the major part of the articles (36%), followed by diagnostic mycology (16%), ecology and epidemiology (15%), clinical mycology (14%), taxonomy and classification (10%), and veterinary mycology (9%). The first classic publication, collecting nearly 200 citations, appeared in 1957, while two articles published in 2010 received nearly 150 citations each, which is notable for a journal covering a highly specialized field of study. An empirical analysis of the publication trends suggests continuing interests in novel diagnostics, fungal pathogenesis, review of clinical diseases especially with relevance to the laboratory scientists, taxonomy and classification of fungal pathogens, fungal infections and carriage in pets and wildlife, and changing ecology and epidemiology of fungal diseases around the globe. We anticipate that emerging and re-emerging fungal pathogens will continue to cause significant health burden in the coming decades. It remains vital that scientists and physicians continue to collaborate by learning each other's language for the study of fungal diseases, and Mycopathologia will strive to be their partner in this increasingly important endeavor to its 100th anniversary in 2038 and beyond.

Abstract:The development of biotechnology in the last three decades has generated the feeling that the newest scientific achievements will deliver high standard quality of life through abundance of food and means for successfully combating diseases. Where the new biotechnologies give access to genetic information, there is a common belief that physiological and pathological processes result from subtle modifications of gene expression. Trustfully, modern genetics has produced genetic maps, physical maps and complete nucleotide sequences from 141 viruses, 51 organelles, two eubacteria, one archeon and one eukaryote (Saccharomices cerevisiae). In addition, during the Centennial Commemoration of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute the nearly complete human genome map was proudly announced, whereas the latest Brazilian key stone contribution to science was the publication of the Shillela fastidiosa genomic sequence highlythed on a Nature cover issue. There exists a belief among the populace that further scientific accomplishments will rapidly lead to new drugs and methodological approaches to cure genetic diseases and other incurable ailments. Yet, much evidence has been accumulated, showing that a large information gap exists between the knowledge of genome sequence and our knowledge of genome function. Now that many genome maps are available, people wish to know what are we going to do with them. Certainly, all these scientific accomplishments will shed light on many more secrets of life. Nevertheless, parsimony in the weekly announcements of promising scientific achievements is necessary. We also need many more creative experimental biologists to discover new, as yet un-envisaged biotechnological approaches, and the basic resource needed for carrying out mile stone research necessary for leading us to that "promised land" often proclaimed by the mass media.

Abstract:We are at a time in science with great prospects for significant contributions by rising stars in parasitology. This field is enhanced by major discoveries and developments in molecular and cell biology; particularly the rapid advancement of genomics, other "omics" and high throughput technologies. The application of molecular techniques from PCR to single-cell sequencing has been poignant in advances in detecting, tracking and characterizing protozoan parasites. The knowledge gained has been utilized for investigating the evolution, epidemiology and biology of these microscopic organisms. In the past several years, the field of molecular biology and genetics of parasites has witnessed a remarkable evolution, particularly in the realms of genomics and high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS). The advent of NGS technologies has revolutionized our understanding of their genomes' complexity and functionality. These advances have enabled the comprehensive analysis of many parasite genomes, leading to the identification of numerous genetic variations and their unique characteristics.The integration of NGS with 'omics' approaches, such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, has facilitated a more holistic view of parasite biological systems. This synergy has been pivotal in unravelling the intricate networks of gene expression regulation, protein interactions, and metabolic pathways. The application of NGS in omics studies has also accelerated the discovery of markers for parasite diagnosis, epidemiology, and therapeutic target identification.Molecular parasitology has greatly benefited from these technological strides, allowing for the exploration of genetic landscapes in diverse parasites at an unprecedented resolution. The use of NGS in molecular genetics has provided insights into the mechanisms of parasite biology, life cycle stages and interactions with the host. The field of genomics has expanded our knowledge of numerous genomes with the Sanger Centre listing 25 annotated parasitic protozoan genomes. Efforts to further expand the number of protist genomes known have led to sequencing of 629 species (Genomes Online Database (GOLD), Joint Genome Institute) and the Protist 10,000 Genomes Project (https://ngdc.cncb.ac.cn/p10k/). This project is currently sequencing 1101 new species and has the goal of 10,000 of the 60,000-200,000 protist species. This has had significant implications for understanding parasite evolution, metabolism, and host evasion.The advances in molecular biology, genetics, and genomics have also been instrumental in the response to global health challenges. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic showed how these technologies could be applied on a global scale with technologies such as RT-PCR and NGS, that played a crucial role in the rapid sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. The techniques, applied in hundreds of testing facilities, were essential for the development of diagnostic tests, vaccines and treatments. Applications of these permitted strain detection, monitoring viral evolution, and tracking. In this Special Issue a series of articles written by rising stars in parasitology apply the transformative developments in molecular biology, molecular genetics and genomics driven by the advancements in NGS and omics technologies, to expand our understanding of parasitic infections and parasite biology. These breakthroughs have not only deepened our understanding of parasites at a molecular level but also opened new avenues for scientific research, with far-reaching implications for disease diagnosis and treatment. The articles in this Special Issue study parasitic protozoa in the phyla Euglenozoa, Metamonada and Apicomplexa with early branching kinetoplastid Trypanosoma brucei and Giardia as well as haemosporidia, respectively. Apicomplexa are a large phyum including Plasmodium, the agent responsible for malaria. Plasmodium species are host-specific with five species (from hundreds described) infecting humans. Coccidian Apicomplexa Cryptosporidium, Cystoisospora and Toxoplasma (that escapes the gut to become systemic)are zoonotic and can be transmitted between animals and humans. These coccidia are intestinal parasites as well as Giardia and Blastocystis which are studied in the articles. Trypansoma brucei, the agent responsible for African sleeping sickness, represents the flagellated kinetoplastids. Amongst the collection in Rising Stars in Parasite and Host: 2023 articles apply molecular biology techniques for identification, epidemiology, evolution, and diagnosis of parasitic infections. Three of the articles[1; 2; 3] utilise molecular techniques involving DNA amplification and sequencing for detection and characterisation of parasitic protozoa with application to diagnosis, screening, and epidemiology. Abstract:The Chinese Journal of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases had its first issue in 1983. Over the past 40 years, the journal witnesses the remarkable achievements in prevention and control of important parasitic diseases in China, marked by effective control of schistosomiasis（2015） and elimination of lymphatic filariasis （2007） and malaria（2021）, and has been playing an important role providing academic exchange platform for research and control programs of parasitic diseases and parasitology, promoting domestic and international scientific exchanges. With the guidance of each editorial board, the journal strictly abides by the academic standards and perseveres the concept of presenting high-quality publication. The national and international impact of the journal has continuously increased. It has been included in important international databases such as Medline, Scopus, and Chinese Science Citation Database（CSCD）（Class C） since 1989. It has been selected as one of Chinese Science and Technology Core Journals since 1987, Core Journals in Chinese since 1992 and the World Journal Clout Index Report Scientific ＆ Technological Periodicals（WJCI） since 2020, and was included in the High-Quality Scientific and Technological Journal Classification Catalog for Preventive Medicine and Health（2021 edition）. It was also awarded as one of “the 100 Outstanding Chinese Academic Journals”（in 2009）, “the First Prize of Excellent Medical and Health Journals of the Ministry of Health ”（in 2005）, “the First Prize of Excellent Journals of the National Health and Family Planning Commission”（in 2013）, the First Prize and the Excellent Journal of “the Journal series of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association ” and “the Excellent Journal Award in East China Region ”. In 2021,its core impact factor reached 1.743, the highest in its history, and continues its first rank among 31 core journals in medicine. The network informatization has been constructed since 2006, with "WeChat" platform established in2016, which has raised the journal’s dissemination, service capacity and impact to a higher level. This article summarizes the 40-year history of the Chinese Journal of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases, and prospects its future development direction.

Abstract:We live in the age of molecular biology and '-omics', and molecular methods have opened up unimagined possibilities for biological research, including parasitology. However, too one-sided a focus on new approaches can lead to major gaps as less 'cool' topics are neglected. Selected areas of research are briefly discussed to highlight the gaps caused by the current excessive focus on molecular and '-omics' methods. It is crucial to combine both 'classical' and modern methods without neglecting the complexity of the interactions of parasites with their hosts and the environment (One Health concept), which is even more urgent in today's rapidly changing world. Parasitologists should be more involved in field studies and multidisciplinary assessment of parasites.

Advances in experimental medicine and biology

Abstract:It is clear that many fascinating problems still remain to be addressed in parasite transmission modelling, from better understanding of transmission processes and natural history of infection to investigating the impact of ecological and spatial scales, climate change, host immunity and social behaviour, parasite-host evolutionary dynamics and parasite community ecology on parasite transmission. This book captures some of the advances made in recent years and provides indications of ways forward for addressing these questions by shedding light on developments in conceptual frameworks and modelling tools as well as the emergence of new data forms for aiding model construction, testing and analysis. Another important advance has been the parallel development of robust computationally-intensive statistical methods to allow model testing and parameterization by aiding the fitting of models to complex data. This is an exciting area of work, which we believe will broaden the scope of mathematical modelling in investigating parasite transmission processes. In particular, we expect this advance will now allow modellers to begin the successful development and analysis of mechanistically-rich models of parasite transmission that will facilitate better integration of the variety of mechanisms increasingly recognized as important in simultaneously affecting transmission, including abiotic processes, trophic and evolutionary interactions, movement in space, and behaviour and even physiology of the individual. We foresee a continuing bright future for using mathematical modelling to clarify parasite transmission dynamics and address problems related to effective parasite control. Ultimately, through this improved application of models to research and management, we expect that parasite control would be an achievable goal bringing benefits to a vast number of our fellow human beings.

Abstract:This concept paper reviews issues pertaining to parasitic and vector-borne infections, of humans, animals, or both, of topical relevance to the African continent as well as to neighbouring and interconnected geographies. This analysis is carried out through the "One Health" lens, being mindful of the central role of agriculture and livestock keeping in Africa's sustainable development. The possible agricultural transformation that the continent may undergo to fulfil the rising demand for animal protein of its growing population, coupled with the ongoing climate changes, may lead to potentially enhanced interactions among humans, domesticated and wild animals, in a fast-changing environment. In this view, tackling parasitic conditions of livestock can prove being multidimensionally beneficial by improving animal health as well as communities' food security, livelihood and public health. Accordingly, the value of applying the One Health approach to drug discovery and development in the fight against parasitic neglected tropical diseases and zoonoses, is also underscored. Overall, this article upholds the adoption of a holistic, global, interdisciplinary, multisectoral, harmonised and forward-looking outlook, encompassing both life and social sciences, when dealing with parasitic conditions of humans and animals, in Africa and beyond, in COVID-19 times and further.
Update on Selected Topics in Acanthocephalan Parasites Research

Abstract:The respectable community of parasitologists aimed at the broad-spectral research of acanthocephalan parasites met at the 9th Acanthocephalan Workshop. The workshop took place in the beautiful surroundings of the High Tatras, Slovakia in the Congress Centre Academia, Stará Lesná near Tatranská Lomnica on September 9 - 13th. This special event was hosted by the Slovak Society for Parasitology, the Institute of Parasitology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Košice, Slovakia, and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Czech Republic. It consisted of nearly three dozen lectures presented by distinguished acanthocephalan specialists who came from 13 countries and five continents. Vibrant discussions and creating new plans for future collaborations were accompanied by local mountain touring that offered the venue richly endowed with nature, deep forests and beautiful mountains. The contributions were addressed to resolve current systematic, taxonomic, biological, behavioural, ecological, and related topics. Presented results showed the most recent progressive developments comparable with all the other parasitic worm groups. Abstract:Despite the use of modern anthelmintics to treat and control parasitism in animal production systems, these illnesses continue affecting both animals' health and diminish production parameters. One of the most important is gastrointestinal nematodiasis which is present in temperate and tropical conditions and represents larges economic losses. The concern increases with the new nematode isolates resistant to different broad-spectrum anthelmintic families (multi-resistant isolates). In addition to social pressure to have food that is safe and that does not harm the environment. The above, leading to the development of alternative gastrointestinal nematode control methods and allows to decrease the excessive use of commercial anthelmintics, extend the useful life of these products and help to have sustainable animal production systems. However, first, this valuable information is encountered in specialized periodic journals in the English language, second due to its high cost, it is difficult to access in general for students and producers who need to know about this information for its application in production systems. A literature review was carried out about the alternative control strategies of nematodes in ruminants that have been developed worldwide with a simple explanation of their potential use, the results obtained so far, and that their dissemination free of charge to make it available to the public. The above using the access granted by the Autonomous University of Campeche to databases such as Elsevier, Springer, and Ebsco Host.

Abstract:The teaching of veterinary parasitology to the large number of students at the Freie Universität Berlin is mainly limited to conventional face-to-face lectures, supplemented by practical classes. Extensive parasite descriptions and diagnostic techniques are at the core of the practical classes, which are also intended to emphasise key biological and veterinary aspects covered in lectures. Further in-depth and specific learning is achieved within a detailed framework of elective courses, with defined learning outcomes for small groups of students, focusing on themes such as 'diagnosis and treatment of ectoparasites in companion animals' or 'zoonotic parasites'. Additionally, structured excursions are designed to offer experience through collaborative international investigations. Organ-based approaches are also an integral part of our veterinary parasitology teaching, done in collaboration with the clinical and para-clinical departments, either via face-to-face interactions or online. Wide-ranging themes, such as 'causes of colic in horses' or 'atopic dermatitis in dogs' are covered. Recently, diverse blended learning elements were introduced into the curriculum (e.g., QuerVet), which makes teaching and learning more flexible, in terms of time and space, and fosters self-directed learning and participation among the students. A new platform to provide online lectures for students, termed VET Talks, was launched in 2015 by the International Veterinary Student's Association (IVSA), and is as a publicly available educational support system for students. Provided free to veterinary students throughout the world, this platform offers students the opportunity to access lectures on interesting topics by outstanding speakers who are nominated by their students. Finally, continuing education (CE) opportunities are provided through specific Masters courses (Master of Equine Medicine, Master of Small Animal Sciences), classical seminars and recent webinars.
