Abstract:The annual electricity consumption of cryptocurrency transactions has grown substantially in recent years, partially driven by the increasing difficulty in mining, but also driven by the large number of new market participants that have been attracted by the elevated prices of this developing financial asset. Total carbon production from mining now likely exceeds that generated by individual developed nations. This is now a prevailing and accepted feature in cryptocurrency markets, however unsustainable it may be. This paper investigates as to how Bitcoin's price volatility and the underlying dynamics of cryptocurrency mining characteristics affect underlying energy markets and utilities companies. Further analysis of potential side-effects within the market for Exchange Traded Funds are considered. The results show a sustained and significant influence of cryptocurrency energy-usage on the performance of some companies in the energy sector as separated by jurisdiction, emphasising the importance of further assessment of environmental impacts of cryptocurrency growth. Robustness testing presents evidence that dynamic correlations peaked during the sharp Bitcoin price appreciation of late-2017 as investors re-evaluated how this increased energy usage would influence the profitability of utility companies.
An Econometric Analysis of Large Flexible Cryptocurrency-mining Consumers in Electricity Markets

Abstract:In recent years, power grids have seen a surge in large cryptocurrency mining firms, with individual consumption levels reaching 700MW. This study examines the behavior of these firms in Texas, focusing on how their consumption is influenced by cryptocurrency conversion rates, electricity prices, local weather, and other factors. We transform the skewed electricity consumption data of these firms, perform correlation analysis, and apply a seasonal autoregressive moving average model for analysis. Our findings reveal that, surprisingly, short-term mining electricity consumption is not correlated with cryptocurrency conversion rates. Instead, the primary influencers are the temperature and electricity prices. These firms also respond to avoid transmission and distribution network (T\&D) charges -- famously known as four Coincident peak (4CP) charges -- during summer times. As the scale of these firms is likely to surge in future years, the developed electricity consumption model can be used to generate public, synthetic datasets to understand the overall impact on power grid. The developed model could also lead to better pricing mechanisms to effectively use the flexibility of these resources towards improving power grid reliability.

Abstract:Abstract Rapidly increasing cryptocurrency prices have encouraged cryptocurrency miners to participate in cryptocurrency production, increasing network hashrates and electricity consumption. Growth in network hashrates has further crowded out small cryptocurrency investors owing to the heightened costs of mining hardware and electricity. These changes prompt cryptocurrency miners to become new investors, leading to cryptocurrency price increases. The potential bidirectional relationship between cryptocurrency price and electricity consumption remains unidentified. Hence, this research thus utilizes July 31 2015–July 12 2019 data from 13 cryptocurrencies to investigate the short- and long-run causal effects between cryptocurrency transaction and electricity consumption. Particularly, we consider structural breaks induced by external shocks through stationary analysis and comovement relationships. Over the examined time period, we found that the series of cryptocurrency transaction and electricity consumption gradually returns to mean convergence after undergoing daily shocks, with prices trending together with hashrates. Transaction fluctuations exert both a temporary effect and permanent influence on electricity consumption. Therefore, owing to the computational power deployed to wherever high profit is found, transactions are vital determinants of electricity consumption.

Abstract:Blockchain technologies are considered one of the most disruptive innovations of the last decade, enabling secure decentralized trust-building. However, in recent years, with the rapid increase in the energy consumption of blockchain-based computations for cryptocurrency mining, there have been growing concerns about their sustainable operation in electric grids. This paper investigates the tri-factor impact of such large loads on carbon footprint, grid reliability, and electricity market price in the Texas grid. We release open-source high-resolution data to enable high-resolution modeling of influencing factors such as location and flexibility. We reveal that the per-megawatt-hour carbon footprint of cryptocurrency mining loads across locations can vary by as much as 50% of the crude system average estimate. We show that the flexibility of mining loads can significantly mitigate power shortages and market disruptions that can result from the deployment of mining loads. These findings suggest policymakers to facilitate the participation of large mining facilities in wholesale markets and require them to provide mandatory demand response.

Abstract:The electricity sector is facing the dual challenge of supporting increasing level of demand electrification while substantially reducing its carbon footprint. Among electricity demands, the energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining data centers has witnessed significant growth worldwide. If well-coordinated, these data centers could be tailor-designed to aggressively absorb the increasing uncertainties of energy supply and, in turn, provide valuable grid-level services in the electricity market. In this paper, we study the impact of integrating new cryptocurrency mining loads into Texas power grid and the potential profit of utilizing demand flexibility from cryptocurrency mining facilities in the electricity market. We investigate different demand response programs available for data centers and quantify the annual profit of cryptocurrency mining units participating in these programs. We perform our simulations using a synthetic 2000 bus ERCOT grid model, along with added cryptocurrency mining loads on top of the real-world demand profiles in Texas. Our preliminary results show that depending on the size and location of these new loads, we observe different impacts on the ERCOT electricity market, where they could increase the electricity prices and incur more fluctuations in a highly non-uniform manner.

Abstract:Decentralized cryptocurrency networks, notably those with high energy demand, have faced significant criticism and subsequent regulatory scrutiny. Despite these concerns, policy interventions targeting cryptocurrency operations in the pursuit of sustainability have largely been ineffective. Some were abandoned for fear of jeopardizing innovation, whereas others failed due to the highly globalized nature of blockchain systems. In search of a more effective angle for energy policy measures, this study adopts a consumer-centric perspective, examining the sentiments of Nigerian cryptocurrency users (${n=158}$) toward Bitcoin's sustainability, a representative cryptocurrency known for its high electricity demand. Three main findings emerged: 1) Even among those self-identifying as highly knowledgeable, most considerably underestimated Bitcoin's electricity consumption. 2) Participants with a more accurate understanding of Bitcoin's energy demand were more inclined to support sustainability measures. 3) Most of this supportive cohort viewed private entities as the primary stakeholders for implementing such measures. Given these findings, we suggest that consumer education should be at the forefront of policy initiatives aimed at cryptocurrency sustainability.

Abstract:Bitcoin, a global financial asset, surpassed one trillion USD in November 2021, but its environmental impact may cause a 2 °C temperature rise by 2050. Using causal and connectedness analysis, we uncover non-linear relationships between bitcoin's energy consumption, price, and the Crypto Volatility Index. This study uses 1458 daily observations from several databases from March 31, 2019, to March 30, 2023. The phenomenon was analyzed using the theory of production and value investing theory. While the relationship between bitcoin-based electricity consumption and crypto market volatility is bidirectional, Granger causality tests reveal that bitcoin prices Granger-cause electricity consumption, but the converse is not true. Regarding Diebold-Yilmaz connectedness, the price of bitcoin acts as a net contributor, while bitcoin-based electricity consumption and crypto market volatility act as net receivers of spillover from bitcoin price. Our findings contrast with the traditional theory of production, where cost is supposed to determine price, and we show that some bitcoin miners continue operating according to the value investing theory despite suffering financial losses. Limited discussions around bitcoin pricing and its significant expense-that is bitcoin's electricity consumption-indicate the need to explore this relationship. Policymakers, green investors, and others may find the results relevant to building an efficient, environmentally friendly framework and creating much-required innovative regulations.

Abstract:Green investors have expressed concerns about the environment and sustainability due to the high energy consumption involved in cryptocurrency mining and transactions. This article investigates the safe haven characteristics of clean energy stock indexes in relation to three cryptocurrencies, taking into account their respective levels of "dirty" energy consumption from 16 May 2018 to 15 May 2023. The purpose is to determine whether the eventual increase in correlation resulting from the events of 2020 and 2022 leads to volatility spillovers between clean energy indexes and cryptocurrencies categorized as "dirty" due to their energy-intensive mining and transaction procedures. The level of integration between clean energy stock indexes and cryptocurrencies will be inferred by using Gregory and Hansen's methodology. Furthermore, to assess the presence of a volatility spillover effect between clean energy stock indexes and "dirty-classified" cryptocurrencies, the t-test of the heteroscedasticity of two samples from Forbes and Rigobon will be employed. The empirical findings show that clean energy stock indexes may offer a viable safe haven for dirty energy cryptocurrencies. However, the precise associations differ depending on the cryptocurrency under examination. The implications of this study's results are significant for investment strategies, and this knowledge can inform decision-making procedures and facilitate the adoption of sustainable investment practices. Investors and policy makers can gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between investments in renewable energy and the cryptocurrency market.

Physical and Economic Viability of Cryptocurrency Mining for Provision of Frequency Regulation: A Real-World Texas Case Study

Abstract:Demand flexibility plays a pivotal role in modern power systems with high penetration of variable energy resources. In recent years, one of the fastest-growing flexible energy demands has been proof-of-work-based cryptocurrency mining facilities. Due to their competitive ramping capabilities and demonstrated flexibility, such fast-responding loads are capable of participating in frequency regulation services for the grid while simultaneously increasing their own operational revenue. In this paper, we investigate the physical and economic viability of employing cryptocurrency mining facilities to provide frequency regulation in large power systems. We quantify mining facilities' operational profit, and propose a decision-making framework to explore their optimal participation strategy and account for the most influential factors. We employ real-world ERCOT ancillary services data in our case study to investigate the conditions under which provision of frequency regulation in the Texas grid is profitable. We also perform transient level simulations using a synthetic Texas grid to demonstrate the competitiveness of mining facilities at frequency regulation provision.

Abstract:Understanding energy consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining gained increasing attention, with the literature focusing mainly on Bitcoin. This study uses data from the two energy consumption indices, to estimate static and dynamic transfer entropies. The results provide a nuanced understanding of the bidirectional relationships and their implications. The dominant direction of information flow for Bitcoin is from electricity consumption to returns, while for Ethereum, it is from returns to electricity consumption, suggesting that Ethereum's returns significantly impact electricity consumption patterns. Results highlight the need for policies that integrate energy forecasting and environmental sustainability considerations and has significant implications for policymaking.

Abstract:The high energy consumption of cryptocurrency transactions has raised concerns about the environment and sustainability among green investors and regulatory authorities. The current study examines the connectedness among clean energy, Bitcoin, the stock market, and crude oil empirically. The time-varying parameter vector autoregression (TVP-VAR) is used to estimate the dynamics of connectedness in a daily dataset spanning the period November 11, 2013 to September 30, 2021. We find that the clean energy and traditional stock markets transmit shocks to Bitcoin and oil in terms of return, and they receive shocks in terms of volatility from Bitcoin and oil. Additionally, Bitcoin and other financial markets are only tenuously linked during non-crisis periods. Nonetheless, their connection strengthens substantially during times of crisis, such as the great cryptocurrency crash of 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. We believe that these findings can help explain how clean energy and cryptocurrency markets are linked during times of crisis.

Abstract:The adverse effects of the high-power energy consumption by cryptocurrencies on the environment and sustainability have raised the interest of a large body of policymakers and market participants. We apply a network approach to investigate the dependency across clean energy, green markets, and cryptocurrencies from 1 January 2018 to 30 November 2021. Our results indicate that sustainable investments, particularly DJSI and ESGL, play a pivotal role in the network system during the COVID-19 crisis. We find that green bonds are the least integrated with the other financial markets, suggesting their significant role in providing diversification benefits to investors. Rolling windows estimation shows that the dependency across the examined marked increased sharply during the COVID-19 crisis, especially between March 2020 and March 2021, after which it faded and became weak and stable until the end of the sample period. Results of the centrality network are consistent with the dependency network analysis.

Abstract:Cryptocurrency has become a pivotal player in global financial transactions due to its decentralized mining process, which eliminates the need for intermediaries. However, the operation of cryptocurrency mining devices (CMDs) requires significant electrical power, leading to an increase in network-connected cryptocurrency mining loads (CMLs) that pose challenges for power grid operators. This paper evaluates the integration of CMLs into power grids, focusing on distribution network performance. A technology-accepted model for assessing cryptocurrency mining performance is presented, along with an analysis of the impacts of high CML penetration on power grid planning and operation. Findings reveal that high CML penetration can complicate load forecasting, congest transmission lines, and increase the coincident peak load in distribution networks. A case study of Iran's power network indicates that CMLs account for approximately 2.8% of the nation's electricity consumption. Furthermore, if 5% of residential customers in Tehran install CMDs, the average coincident peak demand for this group rises by 26.81%. Additionally, the average power factor of a sample CMD is about 0.99, while total current distortion and third harmonic current exceed permissible limits, indicating potential power quality issues. This study highlights the challenges posed by CMLs and proposes strategies for their sustainable integration into power grids.

Abstract:One of the main current focuses of global economies and decision-makers is the efficiency of energy utilization in cryptocurrency mining and trading, along with the reduction of associated carbon emissions. Understanding the pattern of Bitcoin's energy consumption and its bubble frequency can greatly enhance policy analysis and decision-making for energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction. This research aims to assess the validity of the random walk hypothesis for Bitcoin's electricity consumption and carbon footprint. We employed both traditional methods (ADF and KPSS) and recently proposed unit root techniques that account for structural breaks and non-linearity in the data series. Our analysis covers daily data from July 2010 to December 2021. The empirical results revealed that traditional unit root techniques did not confirm the stationarity of both bitcoin's electricity consumption and carbon footprint. However, novel structural break (SB) and linearity tests conducted enabled us to discover five SB episodes between 2012 and 2020 and non-linearity of the variables, which informed our application of the newly developed non-linear unit root tests with structural breaks. With the new methods, the results indicated stationarity after accommodating the SB and non-linearity. Furthermore, based on Phillips and Shi (2019)'s test, we identified certain bubble episodes in the bitcoin energy and carbon variables between 2013 and 2021. The major drivers of the bubbles in bitcoin energy consumption and carbon footprint are variables relating to the bitcoin and financial markets activities and risks, including the global economic and political risks. The study's conclusion based on the above findings informs several policy implications drawn for energy and environmental management including the encouragement of green investments in cryptocurrency mining and trading.

Abstract:Investigating the essential impact of the cryptocurrency market on carbon emissions is significant for the U.S. to realize carbon neutrality. This exploration employs low-frequency vector auto-regression (LF-VAR) and mixed-frequency VAR (MF-VAR) models to capture the complicated interrelationship between cryptocurrency policy uncertainty (CPU) and carbon emission (CE) and to answer the question of whether cryptocurrency policy uncertainty could facilitate U.S. carbon neutrality. By comparison, the MF-VAR model possesses a higher explanatory power than the LF-VAR model; the former's impulse response indicates a negative CPU effect on CE, suggesting that cryptocurrency policy uncertainty is a promoter for the U.S. to realize the goal of carbon neutrality. In turn, CE positively impacts CPU, revealing that mass carbon emissions would raise public and national concerns about the environmental damages caused by cryptocurrency transactions and mining. Furthermore, CPU also has a mediation effect on CE; that is, CPU could affect CE through the oil price (OP). In the context of a more uncertain cryptocurrency market, valuable insights for the U.S. could be offered to realize carbon neutrality by reducing the traditional energy consumption and carbon emissions of cryptocurrency trading and mining.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide emissions pose a severe threat to the global eco-system and human health, yet at the same time the exponential growth of Bitcoin trading, unsustainable mode of current economic development, and the low efficient energy usage have become burgeoning issues in emerging market economies. By applying advanced econometric techniques, this research empirically tests the dynamic impacts of Bitcoin trading, economic growth, and energy use on CO 2 emissions in the top 20 Bitcoin-trading emerging market economies from 2013 to 2020, highlighting results on the existence of cross-section dependence, slope heterogeneity, and unit roots in the panel data. Moreover, Bitcoin trading, economic growth, and energy use have a significantly positive effect on CO 2 emissions from a long-term perspective. Findings further show that CO 2 emissions have a bi-causal correlation with all three determinants. Relevant implications are offered as follows. For academic researchers, cross-section dependence and slope heterogeneity are important considerations, and ignoring them would lead to significantly biased inferences. Emerging market governments should introduce eco-friendly technology for Bitcoin trading, modify the present extensive mode of economic growth, and guard against unsustainable energy consumption.

Abstract:The development of the cryptocurrency market has been accompanied by public concern about the environmental problems caused by such assets. Based on the novel TVP-VAR frequency-domain connectedness framework, this article explores the connectivity among green/black cryptocurrencies and cryptocurrency environmental attention (ICEA) over different terms. The results show different spillover transmissions between the long-term and short-term. The short-term connectedness is stronger compared with the long-term. Additionally, the pairwise spillovers within the system are different in different durations of time. ICEA is the net recipient of internal spillover. Besides, there is a long-term net spillover from black cryptocurrencies to green cryptos. This study has potential reference value for various market participants and academia.

Abstract:Cryptocurrencies are in the center of attention of investors, public authorities and researchers, but the interest has shifted from purely financial aspects regarding the way of trading, lack of regulation and supervision of transactions, volatility, correlation with other assets to aspects related to sustainability taking in account the high energy consumption generated by the mining process and the impact on environmental pollution. Bitcoin was chosen for the research considering the dominance that this financial asset has on the cryptocurrency market and its position as alpha currency.The article focuses on the relationship between Bitcoin transactions and energy consumption, for period 1st January 2019—31st of May 2022, this interval having significant price movements. The authors made a prediction of the Bitcoin price using a complex meta-model and SQL analytical functions. The analysis is based on 15 fundamental variables in order to forecast the price: Bitcoin data (prices and volume), electricity price and traded quantity on day-ahead market (DAM), gas price and traded quantity on DAM, inflation in EU, EU-ETS emissions certificates and oil prices. The study reveals the importance of the relationship Bitcoin—energy—carbon emissions, elements that capture the impact of the mining process on the environment from the perspective of energy consumption. Investors on the Bitcoin market must be aware not only of the importance of financial aspects on the price of cryptocurrencies (inflation, demand, offer), but also of other elements related to the evolution of energy prices (electricity, oil, gas, renewable energy) and the evolution of emissions certificates prices. Considering the promotion of the principles of sustainable development on the capital market, portfolio investors have become increasingly attentive to the social and environmental performance of financial assets. This study aims to make financial market players aware of the non-financial implications of their transactions. In addition, the energy transition and the reconfiguration of the energy mix are elements of impact on the cryptocurrency market through the technical levers involved in the mining process.

Abstract:Cryptocurrencies are gaining more popularity due to their security, making counterfeits impossible. We hypothesize that the carbon footprint of cryptocurrency transactions has a higher dependency on carbon-rich fuel sources than green or renewable fuel sources. We provide a machine learning framework to model such transactions and correlate them with the electricity generation patterns to estimate and analyze their carbon cost.

Abstract:The energy consumption and carbon footprint of cryptocurrencies have always been a popular topic. However, most of the existing studies only focus on one cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, and there is a lack of long-term monitoring studies that summarize all cryptocurrencies. By constructing a time series hash rate/power model, this research obtained the 10-year time series data on energy consumption dataset of global top-25 cryptocurrencies for the first time. Both the temporal coverage and the spatiotemporal resolution of the data exceed previous studies. The results show that Bitcoin’s power consumption only accounts for 58% of the top-25 cryptocurrencies. After China bans cryptocurrencies, the conservative change in global CO2 emissions from 2020 will be between −0.4% and 4.4%, and Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan are likely to become areas of rapid growth in carbon emissions from cryptocurrencies.
