Abstract:Previous study revealed that 8%-12% adolescents suffered from various types of anxiety disorders, and which had interfered with adolescent daily life function and affected adolescent social function. The aim of this study was to evaluate anxiety status and its related factors among students aged 13-26 years from Wuhu, China. This was a cross-sectional observational study. A sample of school students who come from a university, four high schools and four middle schools in Wuhu city were recruited, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) was used to measure the anxiety status among students aged 13-26 years, and some demographic characteristics of students also was determined. A total of 5249 students were included in our study. The overall rate of anxiety status among students was 14.1%. A significant difference was observed between anxiety status and sex, mothers education level, dietary and siesta habit (P < 0.05), only-child family, gentle temper, regular breakfast habit, friend support was associated with lower scores on anxiety status. The findings indicated that anxiety status is common among school students. Preventive and treatment strategies are highly recommended.

Abstract:The goal was to assess rates of anxiety and depression in adolescents in two areas of Zhejiang Province, China. A cross-sectional survey was carried-out using a self-report questionnaire developed for this study. Participants were middle school students (age range 13–16 years) in an urban and a rural setting. There were 1576 completed questionnaires. Symptoms of anxiety sufficient to interfere with enjoyment of life, relaxation, and sleep were common (48%, 40%, and 27%, respectively). School-related problems were the predominant sources of worry. One third reported a history of depression, 16% had at times felt life was not worth living, and 9% reported that they had attempted suicide. Girls were more likely to report symptoms of depression. Patterns of help-seeking showed reliance on friends and parents; only 1% had sought professional help. There were no significant differences in anxiety and depression between one-child and multisibling families.

Abstract:Abstract Background Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms of adolescents not only affect youth but also have wide-ranging impacts on the health of adults. The study was carried out to determine the epidemiological characteristics of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms and the associations between the two and health-risk behaviors in Chinese adolescents. Methods Participants were recruited from the junior and senior high schools in China. Data were collected by self-designed questionnaires. The questionnaires included questions about demographic characteristics, depressive symptom scales, anxiety symptom scales and nine categories of health-risk behaviors. Descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression were performed by SPSS 21.0 software. Results There were 4.4% of the participants with depressive symptoms. Approximately 32.0% of the participants had anxiety symptoms. Girls and general senior school students were risk factors for depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms. Multiple health-risk behaviors were associated with depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents. Conclusion Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms were prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Their distribution was affected by certain health-risk behaviors. Multiple health-risk behaviors were associated with depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:Background:The co-occurrence of depression and anxiety among adolescents is typically associated with suicide ideation.Aims:The study aimed to investigate the symptom-level relationship between suicide ideation and the comorbidity of depression and anxiety.Methods:1501 adolescents aged 12-19 years were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and 716 adolescents who scored ≥5 on both scales were selected as participants. Network analysis was used to identify the network structure of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms. Participants were categorised into either the suicide ideation or non-suicide ideation groups based on their scoring on the suicide-related item in PHQ-9. A comparison was made between the depression-anxiety symptom networks of the two groups.Results:'Restlessness', 'sad mood' and 'trouble relaxing' were the most prominent central symptoms in the depression-anxiety symptom network, and 'restlessness', 'nervousness' and 'reduced movement' were the bridge symptoms in this network. 'Sad mood' was found to be directly related to 'suicide ideation' with the highest variance. The network structure was significantly different in properties between the suicide ideation group and the non-suicide ideation group, with 'restlessness' and 'sad mood' exhibiting significantly higher influence in the network of the suicide ideation group than that in the non-suicide ideation group.Conclusion:Restlessness and sad mood could be targeted for the intervention of depression-anxiety symptoms among adolescents with suicide ideation.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the change in the prevalence and association of depression and deliberate self-harm and their common and independent influencing factors among western Chinese rural adolescents. Methods: A total of 2,744 junior and senior high school students from two rural schools in Sichuan Province, China, participated in the baseline survey and were invited to participate in two follow-up surveys. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, a deliberate self-harm item, the Social Support Rating Scale, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale were administered. A bivariate four-level logistic regression model was used for analysis. Results: The prevalence of depression and deliberate self-harm were 39.6 and 21.2%, respectively. Regular physical exercise, a good relationship with parents, high resilience, and high self-esteem were common protective factors for both depression and deliberate self-harm. Feeling disliked by teachers was a common risk factor for both. Being female, having a mother who emigrated as a migrant worker before the student was 3 years old, feeling disliked by classmates and having a poor family economic status were associated only with an increased risk of depression. Participants with medium social support were less likely to report deliberate self-harm than those with low or high support. Depression and deliberate self-harm were clustered at the class level. Conclusions: The comorbidity of depression and deliberate self-harm in rural adolescents should be given ample attention. Interventions should consider the class clustering of depression and deliberate self-harm and their common and unique influencing factors.

Abstract:This study’s purpose was to (1) determine the prevalence of suicidality (i.e., suicidal ideation or suicide attempts) among adolescents in a city in Northeast China and (2) identify the correlational factors among adolescents with suicidality. A total of 69,519 adolescents from grades 5 to 12 in a city in Northeast China participated in the online investigation. Students completed a structured questionnaire to report their demographic information, psychological characteristics, and suicidality. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were applied to determine significant correlational factors associated with suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA). The prevalence of SI and SA among adolescents in the past 12 months was 13 and 4.8%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analyses found that the potential risk factors for SI and SA included female, non-nuclear family, higher subjective socioeconomic status, meaningless in life, depression, bullying perpetrator, negative parental rearing styles, lower self-esteem scores, hopelessness, and stressful life events. In order to improve the accuracy of suicide risk identification, a cumulative risk index was used. With the increase in the number of cumulative risks, the risk of SI and SA also increased. So the cumulative risk index was very valuable. The total prevalence of SI and SA among primary and middle school students was high. Preventive measures could be implemented according to the risk factors.

Abstract:Abstract Background Depression and anxiety are common mental health problems for adolescence girls,. A number of previous studies have reported that depression and anxiety are influenced by multiple factorial. This study was to evaluate the influencing factors of depressive and anxiety symptoms in Chinese student girls aged 10–19 years old. Methods This study was cross-sectional research including 4,658 student girls aged 10–19 years old, which conducted in 2018 from the Chinese eastern, central and western regions. Using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Generalized Anxiety Disorders-7 to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms. And using logistic regression models to estimated odds ratios (ORs) for depressive and anxiety symptoms about relation to sociodemographic, academic pressure, violence,interpersonal relationship problem and lifestyle. Results Among all girls, our study found that the prevalence rates of depressive and anxiety symptoms were 21.3% (990/4658)and 12.3% (573/4658), respectively. The logistic regression models showed that the risk factors of depressive symptoms were junior higher school and above, nighttime sleep duration ≤ 7 hours, no regular physical activity, drinking. And for anxiety symptoms, in addition to the above factors, smoking also had association with risk of anxiety symptoms. Conclusion Depressive and anxiety symptoms were common among Chinese adolescent girls, and sociodemographic, academic pressure, interpersonal relationship problem, and lifestyle have association with the risk of depressive and anxiety symptoms.
Prevalence and associated factors of emotional and behavioural problems in Chinese school adolescents: a cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Background: Emotional and behavioural problems are key health issues in adolescence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems in Chinese school adolescents and to explore associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted during the period of November/December 2009. A questionnaire including the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) self-reported version, and the characteristics of child (age, gender, only child and study pressure), parents (parent-adolescent relationship and parental expectations) and families (living area, family structure, socio-economic status and negative life events) was distributed to our study population. A total of 5220 Chinese adolescents (aged 11-18) from 30 public schools in Liaoning province completed the questionnaire. Multivariate logistic analysis was used to explore the factors associated with emotional and behavioural problems. Results: The average problem score was 11.28 (SD = 5.86) and the 10.7% scored above the cut-off for emotional and behavioural problems. Factors that increased the risk of having emotional and behavioural problems were: poor parent-adolescent relationship, experiencing more negative life events, older age, having study pressure, living in rural areas, boys and lower parental expectations. Conclusions: The prevalence of emotional and behavioural problems among Chinese adolescents was lower level compared with those reported in other countries. We found parent-adolescent relationship, negative life events and age to be the strongest contributing factors of emotional and behavioural problems.
Suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents: prevalence, risk factors, and partial mediation by family support, a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Suicidal ideation is a pressing public health concern, particularly among adolescents. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of and factors associated with suicidal ideation in Chinese adolescents, addressing an important gap in current research. Methods: This study employed an online survey of 3443 adolescents in Lianyungang, using a cross-sectional design. The assessment included the use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder instrument, and the Perceived Social Support Scale to evaluate suicidal ideation, anxiety symptoms, and social support in adolescents, respectively. Results: In adolescents, the prevalence of suicidal ideation was 22.1%, with a significantly higher proportion among female adolescents than among males (27.9% vs 16.9%, P < 0.001). Binary regression analysis identified (OR = 1.788, 95% CI: 1.467-2.177, P < 0.001), anxiety symptoms (OR = 10.035, 95% CI: 7.441-13.534, P < 0.001), total PHQ-9 scores of mothers (OR = 1.040, 95%CI: 1.003 - 1.078, P = 0.034), total GAD-7 scores of mothers (OR = 0.958, 95%CI: 0.919 - 0.998, P = 0.039), and moderate parental relationships (OR = 2.042, 95% CI: 1.630-2.557, P < 0.001) to be risk factors for suicidal ideation; family support was a protective factor (OR = 0.888, 95% CI: 0.859-0.918, P < 0.001). Furthermore, family support partially mediates the relationship between anxiety symptoms and suicidal ideation among adolescents (9.28%). Conclusions: This study highlights high adolescent suicidal ideation rates and recommends gender-specific interventions, anxiety management, and family support for improvement in mental health status.

Abstract:Background. The prevalence of adolescent depression is continuously increasing, impacting the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development of adolescents. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend depression from the perspective of the social ecosystem, necessitating further empirical evaluation. Methods. This study utilized a case-control study design. The cases consisted of adolescents with depression (aged 13–18 years) admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, from November 2021 to July 2022, meeting the diagnostic criteria for depression in the 11th Edition of the International Classification of Diseases. Control group students, with a matching gender ratio in the same region, were randomly recruited. Logistic regression analysis was employed to investigate the factors associated with depression, with gender and age as covariates. Results. The study comprised 200 participants, with 44 (22.0%) males and 156 (78.0%) females. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that increased adolescent depression was associated with being an only child ( AOR = 2.680 , 95% CI: 1.106–6.492), living in urban areas ( AOR = 3.324 , 95% CI: 1.077–10.267), experiencing school bullying ( AOR = 9.087 , 95% CI: 2.044–40.408), having severe family dysfunction ( AOR = 6.491 , 95% CI: 1.109–37.995), and possessing low core self-evaluation ( AOR = 11.746 , 95% CI: 3.305–41.746). Odds ratios for each factor were statistically significant. Conclusions. Our results improve the evidence for associations between adolescent depression and core self-evaluation, school bullying, family function, living in urban areas, and being an only child. These findings should be taken into consideration in the assessment, intervention, and related policies for adolescent depression.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current status of anxiety and depression among adolescents and to analyze the correlation between adolescents' online social connections and their depression and anxiety. METHODS: The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design, conducted in a middle school located in a city in Sichuan Province. Classes were selected through simple random sampling, with all students in the selected classes serving as study participants. Anxiety, depression, and online social connections were assessed using the Chinese version of the DSM-5 Anxiety Inventory for Children and Adolescents, the DSM-5 Depression Inventory for Children and Adolescents, and the Revised Social Connectedness Scale, respectively. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of anxiety and depression among the participants were found to be 49.1% and 47.1%, respectively. A significant positive correlation was identified between online social connections and both anxiety and depression. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate a concerning prevalence of anxiety and depression among adolescents. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to recognize the multifaceted factors contributing to these mental health challenges and to remain vigilant regarding adolescent mental health. Leveraging the impact of online social connections, early psychological intervention strategies should be implemented to promote healthy online relationships and mitigate the risks of anxiety and depression among adolescents.

Abstract:The purpose of the survey is to investigate the relationship between anxiety statuses and suboptimal health status among students from south of Anhui in china. Our study was a population-based, cluster sampling method survey with a sample consisting of 5249 students, who come from a university, four high schools and four middle schools in Wannan Area in China. Sub-health status was measured by multidimensional sub-health questionnaire of adolescents, and anxious status was assessed using anxiety self-assessment scale. A total of 538 (10.25%) of the students were detected with anxiety status, the prevalence of anxiety status for boy and girl students were 11.8% and 16.5%,respectively, there are no significant difference between urban and rural for the anxiety score in physical and mental sub-health status (P > 0.05). The boys living in urban have a lower anxiety score than that of the girls, the no-only child and child living in rural in different sub-health status (P < 0.05). The results indicate that sub-health status and anxiety status are prevalent among students, especially in girls, no-only child and students who living in rural area, the school heads should pay more attention to the mental health of students.

Abstract:Abstract Background Depressive and anxiety symptoms are widespread among adolescents today, creating a large social problem. However, few previous studies have addressed depression and anxiety among adolescents in Chinese cohorts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of and risk factors for depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese middle school adolescent students in the post-COVID-19 era. Methods A total of 22,380 middle school students from Jiangsu Province were surveyed online, and their general demographic data were collected. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to assess depressive symptoms, and the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale was used to measure anxiety symptoms. Results Of these participants (aged 12–17 years), 25.6% had depressive symptoms, 26.9% had anxiety symptoms, and 20.6% had a combination of depression and anxiety symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was higher in female adolescents (27.6%) than in male adolescents (23.7%; χ 2 = 45.479, P = 0.000), and the proportion with anxiety symptoms was higher among female adolescents (28.6%) than among male adolescents (25.4%; χ 2 = 29.390, P = 0.000). Furthermore, binary logistic regression analysis showed that gender, region, and parental relationship were significantly associated with depressive symptoms among adolescents, while age, gender, region, and parental relationship were significantly associated with anxiety symptoms. Conclusions Our findings demonstrated that the prevalence of reported depressive and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents are high. Female gender, urban region, and poor parental relationship may be risk factors for depressive and anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, policy makers, schools, and families need to pay more attention to the psychological health of adolescents, develop response plans and take early intervention measures to reduce the prevalence of adolescent depression and anxiety.

Social anxiety and suicidal ideation among middle-school students in China: a mediation model of internet addiction

Abstract:Background: Suicide is a fatal public health issue for adolescents, and it is of great significance to explore the precursors of suicidal behaviors, especially suicidal ideation. However, the relationship between social anxiety and suicidal ideation and its mechanism are still unclear. The study aims to examine the association between social anxiety and suicidal ideation and the mediating effect through Internet addiction. Methods: A total of 2,278 middle-school students aged 12 to 16 years were recruited through a multistage cluster sampling method in this cross-sectional study. Logistical regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were conducted to examine the direct and indirect effects of social anxiety. Results: During the past year, 262 (11.50%) participants reported suicidal ideation. Females had a higher prevalence of suicidal ideation than males (12.9% vs. 10.0%, p = 0.034), and urban adolescents reported a higher prevalence than their rural counterparts (13.4% vs. 9.6%, p = 0.006). In the total sample, social anxiety and Internet addiction were independently associated with suicidal ideation ( p < 0.05). In the subgroup analysis, the association between social anxiety and suicidal ideation was significant only among rural females and urban males ( p < 0.05). SEM demonstrated that social anxiety had direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation, and Internet addiction partially mediated the relationship, with a mediating ratio of 30.53%. The partial mediating effect was also significant only in rural females and urban males. Conclusion: Adolescents may overuse the Internet to cope with social anxiety and further have suicidal ideation. Limiting Internet use and improving interpersonal skills in real life may be efficient for suicide prevention. In addition, targeted interventions should be tailored by different sexes across urban and rural regions.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of suicide behaviors and their related factors among adolescent students in Shanghai. Methods The self-completed anonymous questionnaires, which included center for epidemiologic studies depression scale (CES-D), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), adolescent self-rating life events check list (ASLEC), beck hopelessness scale and a general questionnaire were administered to a random sample of grade 5-9, grade 10 and 11 students from 9 primary to high schools in Shanghai in late April 2003. The concept of the suicide behaviors in this study was defined according to the youth risk behaviors surveillance system(YRBSS) from American Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). It included suicide ideation, suicide plan and suicide attempt. Chi-square test was used to assess the gender and grade differences of suicide behaviors. Logistic regression model was applied to identify the factors associated with the suicide ideation in the students. Results 2 416 completed questionnaires were obtained from 2 513 participants. Male: 1 190; female:1 226, aged from 10-17 years old. During the 12 months preceding the survey, there were 368(15.23%,368/2 416) students had ever experienced suicidal ideation, 141(5.84%,141/2 416) students made suicide plans and 42(1.74%,42/2 416)students had actually attempted suicide. Suicide ideation was reported in 178(14.96%,178/1 190)boys and 190(15.50%,190/1 226) girls. Eighty (6.72%,80/1 190) boys and 61 (4.98%,61/1 226) girls reported suicide plans, while 24 (2.02%,24/1 190) boys and 18(1.47%,18/1 226) girls reported suicide attempts. There was no statistical significant difference between the rates of these suicide behaviors in boys and those in girls(P>0.05). The suicide ideation was increased by the student's grade of school(P<0.05 ). The highest rate of suicide attempt was in grade 11(5.17%,6/116), the second was in grade 6(2.52%,13/516), and the lowest one was in grade 5(0.86%,3/347),(P<0.05). Among all students, suicide ideation was strongly related to the scores of CES-D, SAD, ASLEC and Beck's hopeless scale. Suicide ideation was also related to the school, family's residency status in the students of primary schools (grade 5). Among the students of middle schools, suicide ideation was also related to the peer relationship, father's educational level and child-mother communication. Among the students of high schools, suicide ideation was related to school achievement, free time and child-father communication.Conclusions Suicide behaviors among the adolescent students in Shanghai should be seriously concerned. Different key points of intervention for suicide behaviors should be put on different age groups of students. Early recognition and treatment of emotional disorders among the adolescent students and raising their ability to cope with the negative life events will be helpful to reduce the suicide behaviors in adolescent students.
Mental health problems and associated school interpersonal relationships among adolescents in China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Background During adolescence, middle school students facing psychophysical changes are vulnerable to psychological problems. The present study aimed to investigate mental health status and associated school interpersonal relationships among adolescents in China, which may help to inform effective prevention strategies to reduce the prevalence of mental health problems. Methods In the cross-sectional study, a total of 10,131 middle school students were selected from three cities in eastern China by stratified random sampling. The Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), Teacher–Student Relationship Questionnaire (TSRQ) and Peer Relationship Scale (PRS) were used to evaluate psychological symptoms, the quality of relationship with teachers and the quality of relationship with peers, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the association between school interpersonal relationships and mental health problems in adolescents. Results 36% of the middle school students reported positive in mental health problems assessed by the SCL-90. The most prevalent dimensional symptom was obsessive–compulsive (43.3%). The risk of all types of psychological symptoms was significantly associated with school interpersonal relationships. Moreover, a higher risk of mental health problems was associated with poorer school interpersonal relationships. Conclusions Mental health problems were prevalent among adolescents and highly associated with school interpersonal relationships. Our findings underscore the pressing need for school administrators to make efforts to improve school interpersonal relationships among adolescents.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Although there is much literature on adolescent suicide, combined effects of depression and anorexia nervosa on suicide were rarely investigated. The aims of this study are to examine the association between anorexia nervosa and suicidal thoughts and explore the interaction between anorexia nervosa and depression.METHODS:This is a cross-sectional study, in the study, a sample of 8,746 Chinese adolescents was selected by multistage stratified method in 2012/2013 from 20 middle schools in 7 provinces across China Mainland. Multilevel logistic model was introduced to explore association between anorexia nervosa and suicidal thoughts. And subgroup analyses were conducted on participants with or without depression.RESULTS:Multilevel logistic model revealed that demographic variables, including academic achievement, were not the predictive risk factors of suicidal thoughts. Those who suffered from worse severity of perceived anorexia nervosa were at increased risk of thinking about suicide. The interaction between depression and anorexia nervosa was significant, however, subgroup analyses showed that the associations were significant only among the adolescents without depression.CONCLUSIONS:Our results indicate that all levels of anorexia nervosa serve as predictable indicators of suicidal thoughts in Chinese adolescents, and the effects of anorexia nervosa are modified by depression status.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence and influence factors of adolescent depression in suburban district.Methods: 700 adolescents in suburban district and 475 in urban were sampled.Center for Epidemiological Survey-Depression Scale(CES-D) was used,including general demographic data.Results: ①The depression score of adolescents in suburban district(15.4±9.3) was significantly higher than in urban(10.4±9.1);and depression prevalence rate in suburban was 32.1%,while in urban the rate was 14.7%.②In suburban district,girls' depression level were significantly higher than boys';household income was inversely proportional to child's depression.③Logistic regression analysis showed that increasing age,female,mother's low levels of education were risk factors of adolescent depression in the suburban district.Conclusion: The proportion of the suburban adolescents at risk of depression is far beyond the urban adolescents,especially those female who are older in age,and whose mother has accepted low level of education need to be focused on.
