Abstract:Psoriasis is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory systemic disease that is not only characterized by skin manifestations but may also be accompanied by various comorbidities, imposing a heavy burden on patients’ physical and mental health and affecting their quality of life. Although the continuous approval of various biological agents for clinical use has provided more effective treatment options to patients with psoriasis, no consensus on the evaluation of comprehensive treatment goals has yet been established. The treat-to-target (T2T) strategy requires consideration of multiple dimensions of treatment outcomes, the development of long-term management goals, and regular assessments of treatment conditions, which are often used in the management of chronic diseases. Therefore, based on the latest consensuses and guidelines, research data, and clinical experience as well as the combination of survey results and expert group discussions, the present consensus focuses on 4 dimensions of short- and long-term integrated management goals for biological agents: alleviating skin lesions, improving quality of life, screening and managing psoriasis comorbidities, and ensuring drug safety. The implementation methods, evaluation time, treatment monitoring, and program adjustments are also herein described to achieve comprehensive management of psoriasis to the maximum extent. This consensus provides a reference for clinical practice.

Abstract:Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rising in China, and the tendency for lifelong recurrence decreases patients' quality of life. However, no studies on treatment decision-making in Chinese patients with IBD exist. Thus, this study aimed to determine the actual and ideal decision-making, as well as factors affecting decision-making in Chinese IBD patients. Methods A multicenter online questionnaire was distributed among patients diagnosed with IBD. To assess factors that influence treatment decision-making, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results From March 20, 2018, to May 20, 2018, a total of 866 patients completed the questionnaires, including 222 patients with ulcerative colitis, 588 patients with Crohn's disease, and 56 patients with unclassified IBD. There was a significant difference between ideal and actual decision-making in Chinese IBD patients (P < .005). The factors affecting ideal decision-making included income, education, illness severity, religiosity, the importance of the treatment decision, the employment situation, and occupation area. The factors affecting actual decision-making included age, illness severity, religiosity, the employment situation, economic anxiety, concern about the side effects, and the importance of the treatment decision. Conclusions There is a significant difference between ideal and actual decision-making in IBD patients in China. That is, the economy, religiosity, illness severity, and concern about the side effects of treatment are the most important factors affecting treatment decisions in Chinese IBD patients.
Tobacco smoking negatively influences the achievement of greater than three-quarters reduction in psoriasis area and severity index after eight weeks of treatment among patients with psoriasis: Findings from a prospective study

Abstract:Introduction: Smoking is an independent and modifiable risk factor for the onset and development of psoriasis; however, evidence on the association between tobacco smoking and psoriasis treatment efficacy is limited. This study aimed to explore the influence of smoking on treatment efficacy in a cohort of patients with psoriasis in Shanghai, China. Methods: Patients with psoriasis were recruited from the Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital between 2021 and 2022. The treatment for patients with psoriasis includes acitretin, methotrexate, narrow-band ultraviolet/benvitimod, and biologics. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, physical examination, and disease severity estimation at baseline, week four, and week eight. The achievement of a ≥75% reduction in psoriasis area and severity index (PASI75) score from baseline to week 8 was set as the primary outcome for treatment efficacy estimation. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.4. Results: A total of 560 patients with psoriasis were enrolled in this study, who were predominantly males (72.9%). The average age of patients was 48.4 years, and 38.8% of them were current smokers, 5.0% of them were former smokers. The median score of PASI among patients changed from 11.1 (interquartile range, IQR: 7.9-16.6) at baseline to 6.2 at week 4 and 3.1 at week 8, and 13.8% and 47.3% of patients with psoriasis achieved PASI75 at weeks 4 and 8, respectively. Logistic regression indicated that patients without tobacco smoking had a higher proportion of PASI75 achievement at week 8. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) was 11.43 (95% CI: 6.91-18.89), 14.14 (95% CI: 8.27-24.20), and 3.05 (95% CI: 1.20-7.76) for non-smokers compared with smokers, current smokers, and former smokers, respectively. Moreover, former smokers had higher PASI75 achievement than current smokers (AOR=3.37), and patients with younger smoking initiation age, longer smoking duration, and higher smoking intensity had lower PASI75 achievement. Conclusions: Tobacco smoking was negatively associated with PASI75 achievement both in current and former smokers, and former smokers had higher PASI75 achievement than current smokers. The implementation of tobacco control measures is beneficial for improving treatment responses.
Anti-TNF- Αtreatment-Related Pathways and Biomarkers Revealed by Transcriptome Analysis in Chinese Psoriasis Patients

Abstract:Background Anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α ) therapy has made a significant impact on treating psoriasis. Despite these agents being designed to block TNF- α activity, their mechanism of action in the remission of psoriasis is still not fully understood at the molecular level. Results To better understand the molecular mechanisms of Anti-TNF- α therapy, we analysed the global gene expression profile (using mRNA microarray) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) that were collected from 6 psoriasis patients before and 12 weeks after the treatment of etanercept. First, we identified 176 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) before and after treatment by using paired t-test. Then, we constructed the gene co-expression modules by weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), and 22 co-expression modules were found to be significantly correlated with treatment response. Of these 176 DEGs, 79 DEGs (M_DEGs) were the members of these 22 co-expression modules. Of the 287 GO functional processes and pathways that were enriched for these 79 M_DEGs, we identified 30 pathways whose overall gene expression activities were significantly correlated with treatment response. Of the original 176 DEGs, 19 (GO_DEGs) were found to be the members of these 30 pathways, whose expression profiles showed clear discrimination before and after treatment. As expected, of the biological processes and functionalities implicated by these 30 treatment response-related pathways, the inflammation and immune response was the top pathway in response to etanercept treatment, and some known TNF- α related pathways, such as molting cycle process, hair cycle process, skin epidermis development, regulation of hair follicle development, were implicated. Furthermore, additional novel pathways were also suggested, such as heparan sulfate proteoglycan metabolic process, vascular endothelial growth factor production, whose transcriptional regulation may mediate the response to etanercept treatment. Conclusion Through global gene expression analysis in PBMC of psoriasis patient and subsequent co-expression module based pathway analyses, we have identified a group of functionally coherent and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and related pathways, which has not only provided new biological insight about the molecular mechanism of anti-TNF- α treatment, but also identified several genes whose expression profiles can be used as potential biomarkers for anti-TNF- α treatment response in psoriasis.
Health Utility and Its Affacting Factors for Patients with Psoriasis in China

Abstract:To assess health utilities and examine factors affecting health utilities among patients with moderate to severe psoriasis in China. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional HRQoL survey of psoriasis patients in 29 tertiary hospitals of 7 cities in China from June to July, 2012. Eligible patients were assessed with moderate to severe psoriasis by physicians and treated with prescriptions during the visit/hospitalization. Degree of moderate and severe was estimated by physicians based on definition of BSA score 3-10% and >10%. Participants completed HRQoL measures of EuroQol 5 domains (EQ-5D), Short Form 6 domains (SF-6D) and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Socio-demographic and treatment satisfaction information were also collected from the participants. Mean scores were compared and stepwise multivariate linear regression was conducted to assess factors associated with health utilities. A total of 150 patients were included with 50% female, mean age of 43.87 years and mean disease duration of 5.19 years. About 22.67% patients reported having at least one comorbidity with anxiety/depression (14.00%) and related infection (10.00%) listed on the top. 36.67% patients expressed dissatisfaction with their current treatment. Mean EQ-5D, EQ-VAS, SF-6D and DLQI scores were 0.64, 63.23, 0.72 and 11.09, respectively, with significant difference between the severe and moderate group in all measures(0.50 vs. 0.77, 58.12 vs. 67.48, 0.67 vs.0.75, 14.43 vs. 8.33, all p<0.001). Regression analysis indicated that health severity indicated by DLQI score was significantly associated with value scores of EQ-5D, EQ-VAS, SF-6D. Sleeplessness and living in Tier 1st city decreased EQ-5D and SF-6D scores and treatment dissatisfaction had the negative impact on EQ-VAS and SF-6D scores with statistic significant. Compared with moderate patients, patients with severe psoriasis have poorer health utilities. Increasing the patients’ satisfaction with their treatment and controlling insomnia may raise their health utilities effectively.

Abstract:Introduction While new targeted therapies have advanced psoriasis treatment, real-world data on comparative effectiveness is lacking. This study analyzed treatment regimens and response in an observational cohort, examining potential disparities between clinical trials and routine practice. Methods Data from the Psoriasis Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Center registry were analyzed. Patients with ≥1 follow-up were included. Treatment response was assessed using PASI 50/90 criteria. Factors associated with response were analyzed. Results 407 patients were included (46 first-time diagnosed, 361 previously diagnosed). A higher proportion of first-time diagnosed patients achieved treatment response than previously diagnosed (76.1% vs. 62.6%). Multivariable analysis identified factors associated with reduced response in previously treated patients. Conclusion This real-world study found lower treatment response rates compared to clinical trials, especially in previously treated patients. Disparities highlight remaining unmet needs for psoriasis management. Combination and rotational strategies may improve outcomes in patients unresponsive to available therapies. Ongoing research on novel targets and pathways is warranted to address treatment gaps.

Modeling Posttreatment Prognosis of Skin Lesions in Patients with Psoriasis in China.

Abstract:Importance:Understanding the posttreatment prognosis of skin lesions in patients with psoriasis is essential for improving patients' treatment satisfaction.Objectives:To model the prognosis of skin lesions for patients with psoriasis after 3 types of therapy.Design, Setting, and Participants:This prospective cohort study included patients with psoriasis who visited a dermatologist and were enrolled in the platform of the Psoriasis Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Center in China from August 2020 to December 2021.Interventions:Biologic, traditional, and systemic therapy for psoriasis.Main Outcomes and Measures:Skin lesions were measured by the Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA) scale subsumed into 4 stages of severity (IGA 0/1, IGA 2, IGA 3, and IGA 4), with higher scores indicating higher severity. The matching method was used to balance baseline covariates between patients receiving each of the 3 treatments. Transition probabilities from IGA scores at baseline to 0 to 1 month and 1 to 12 months were estimated.Results:A total of 8767 patients were included in the final analysis (median age, 38.6 years [IQR, 28.7-52.8 years]; 5809 [66.3%] male). Across the 3 therapies, as the follow-up duration increased, the probability of improvement transition into a less severe IGA stage (from IGA 4 to IGA 0/1) increased from 0.19 (95% CI, 0.18-0.21) in 0 to 1 month to 0.36 (95% CI, 0.34-0.37) in 1 to 12 months. Biologic therapy was associated with greater improvement transitions for severe conditions, with transition probabilities from IGA 4 to IGA 0/1 increasing by 0.06 (95% CI, 0.02-0.09) vs traditional therapy and by 0.06 (95% CI, 0.03-0.09) vs systemic therapy in 0 to 1 month and by 0.08 (95% CI, 0.04-0.12) vs traditional therapy and 0.11 (95% CI, 0.07-0.14) vs systemic therapy in 1 to 12 months.Conclusions and Relevance:This cohort study modeling psoriasis prognosis provided a complete prognosis of skin lesions, and biologic therapy was associated with improved prognosis of moderate to severe psoriasis compared with traditional and systemic therapies. The study provides insight on using transition diagrams to assess psoriasis prognosis and to communicate with patients in clinical practice.

Abstract:Severe psoriasis has a long course and poor outcome, and it has long been a problem for patients. Understanding the independent risk factors that contribute to patients with severe psoriasis is critical for the development of effective treatment strategies. This large, multicenter study recruited 2,109 plaque psoriasis patients from 12 hospitals across China (October 31, 2019 – May 31, 2022). The logistic regression model underwent internal validation and external validation using two independent cohorts over future time periods (June 1, 2022 – January 31, 2023). The discriminative power of our model was substantiated by a C-index of 0.863 (95% CI: 0.848–0.879) in internal validation, further affirmed through 1,000 bootstrap validation (C-index: 0.860, 95% CI: 0.836–0.885) and external validation cohorts, where the C-index reached up to 0.910 (95% CI: 0.868–0.953) and 0.951 (95% CI: 0.924–0.977) in 2 external validation cohorts. To enhance accessibility for clinicians, the model has been made available as a dynamic nomogram and QR code. Our study identified 10 risk factors (the "DELPHI" consensus dichotomy, the DLQI index, the extent of skin involvement as measured by body surface area, the age of the patient at the time of clinical visit, sex, body weight in kilograms, career, the presence of scalp involvement, facial involvement, and arthropathy) for the overall severity of psoriasis (PASI ≥ 10). "Nomogram-10" provides clinicians with a practical tool to develop personalized intervention strategies based on an individual's risk profile.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:We aimed to prospectively evaluate the visit adherence in mild to moderate psoriasis patients.METHODS:Plaque psoriasis patients aged 18 or above who were prescribed with a two-component formula ointment were eligible for the study. The patients were randomly assigned to group A or B, and received management with or without planned patient-doctor communication via a mobile platform. The outpatient visit was scheduled at week 2, 8, 16, 28, 48, and 52. Visit adherence was evaluated as the visit rate of the patients.RESULTS:Two hundred twenty-one patients were included. Generally, the visit adherence dropped over time during follow-up. The visit rates in group A were 5.2-15.7% through the 52 weeks, and similar rates were found in group B (7.5-17.0%, vs group A, P > 0.05). A negative binomial regression model showed that older age and higher BSA were correlated with more frequent visits.CONCLUSION:The visit adherence of mild to moderate psoriasis patients was very low in China. Proactive inquiries of the doctors via the mobile platform failed to improve the visit adherence of the patients.
Reasons and Factors Contributing to Chinese Patients’ Preference for Ustekinumab in Crohn’s Disease: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background and Aims: Ustekinumab (UST) was approved in China for treating moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease (CD) in 2020. We aimed to identify the reasons and possible contributing factors for UST preference in Chinese patients with CD.Methods: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional survey among patients with moderate to severe CD who underwent UST treatment in 27 hospitals. Patients completed a 46-item questionnaire that included information on demographics, clinical characteristics, reasons in favor of UST and shared decision-making perception. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the predictive factors of different UST preferences.Results: Overall, 127 patients (73 males; mean age, 25.9 ± 9.9 years) completed the questionnaire. Most patients (74.8%) had biologic failure. The most common reason for the latest treatment disconnection was unresponsiveness to the previous medications. The major UST information sources were physicians (96.1%). Nearly half of the patients (44.9%) reported shared decision making regarding UST treatment. No difference was found in the decision-making patterns in terms of sex and age. The most influential reason for UST preference was “effectiveness” (77%, 98/127), followed by “safety” (65%, 83/127), “frequency of administration” (39%, 49/127), and “mode of administration” (37%, 47/127). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a positive self-rated health status was a contributing factor for UST preference with a low frequency of administration.Conclusion: This is the first multicenter survey of Chinese patients with CD to identify the possible contributing factors for UST preference. Treatment choice should be discussed with patients because individual preferences are determined by diverse factors.
Identifying demographic, social, and clinical predictors of interleukin inhibitor biologic therapy effects using the real-world clinical data

Abstract:Abstract Background Appropriate and effective use of biological agents is important to improve the benefits of psoriasis patients. We examined how the effects of interleukin (IL) inhibitors vary across patients' demographic, social, and clinical characteristics in treating psoriasis, and whether IL inhibitors are effective for managing mild-to-moderate psoriasis. Methods Data were collected from a large national registry in China from Sep 2020 to Sep 2021. Clinical benefits, measured by 75% (and 90%) or more improvement from baseline Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 75 and PASI 90), were contrasted using the propensity-score-based causal inference methodology between the IL inhibitors and the conventional therapies. Candidates that can differentiate the benefits with P-values less than 0.05 were identified as predictors. Results Baseline PASI, DLQI, and employment demonstrated stronger predictability in achieving the benefits of IL inhibitors. For weeks 5-46, baseline PASI predicted an increasing relative benefit of biologics as the value increased from 0 to 5, followed by a V-shaped benefit as the value further increased. Baseline PASI scores at 5.4 and 1.0 predicted the maximal and minimal benefits on achieving PASI 75, with an increase in probabilities of 0.36 (95CI 0.28 to 0.44) and 0.03 (-0.14 to 0.20), respectively. Higher DLQI predicted the maximal benefit (0.55, 0.26 to 0.83) of achieving PASI 75 and lower DLQI predicted the minimal benefit of 0.13 (0.04 to 0.23). Part-time job predicted the maximal benefit of 0.28 (0.21 to 0.36) and full-time job predicted the minimal benefit of 0.15 (0.10 to 0.21). These findings were consistent in achieving PASI 75 and PASI 90. Conclusions This article fills the gap in treating mild psoriasis with IL inhibitor biologics. Patients with mild psoriasis, i.e. with PASI below 5 or BSA scores below 5, had statistically significant benefits from treatment with IL inhibitors. The studying provides evidence from real-world data on patients’ heterogeneous responses to IL inhibitor biologics. Identified clinical and social predictors can be used for treatment differentiation in clinical practice.

Abstract:Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, Ahead of Print. Background:Psoriasis is a persistent inflammatory skin condition driven by an immune response and influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. The high likelihood of disease recurrence has been a major concern for many patients, while the concurrent presence of other conditions has significantly impacted their quality of life.Objective:To improve early detection of and treatment for patients by studying the epidemiological characteristics of patients with psoriasis in China.Methods:The Psoriasis Real-World Big Data Collection Platform was initiated by the National Skin and Immune Diseases Clinical Medical Research Center (Beijing First Hospital of Peking University) in August 2020. During the period from August 2020 to June 2022, a total of 1012 hospitals across the nation participated in data entry. This article presents an epidemiological feature analysis based on the real case questionnaire survey form collected over the past 2 years.Results:The prevalence of psoriasis is highest among young and middle-aged men, affecting largely the skin area. Factors such as smoking, obesity, and family history are likely to influence disease onset. In this study's data, the limbs and trunk were the most common sites for psoriasis onset, with cardiovascular disease being the most prevalent comorbidity. Topical corticosteroid creams are frequently used in treatment by Chinese patients, along with a notable proportion opting for oral Chinese medicine for systemic treatment. Secukinumab is the primary choice when utilizing biological agents.Conclusion:The actual data of patients with psoriasis from 2020 to 2022 offer crucial insights into the disease progression among the Chinese psoriasis population in recent years. Through an analysis of patient characteristics and treatment modalities, it furnishes valuable guidance for the prevention, early detection, and management of psoriasis.

Abstract:A skew lattice is a noncommutative associative analogue of a lattice and as such may be viewed both as an algebraic object and as a geometric ob- ject. Whereas recent papers on skew lattices primarily treated algebraic aspects of skew lattices, this article investigates their intrinsic geometry. This geometry is obtained by considering how the coset geometries of the maximal primitive subalgebras combine to form a global geometry on the skew lattice. While this geometry is derived from the algebraic operations, it can be given a description that is independent of these operations, but which in turn induces them. Var- ious aspects of this geometry are investigated including: its general properties; algebraic and numerical consequences of these properties; connectedness; the geometry of skew lattices in rings; connections between primitive skew lattices and completely simple semigroups; and finally, this geometry is used to help classify symmetric skew lattices on two generators. Recall that a band is a semigroup satisfying the idempotent law: xx = x. Upon examining bands which are multiplicative subsemigroups of rings, one uncovers classes of bands which also possess an idempotent countermultipli- cation. This leads one to define a skew lattice to be an algebra with a pair of associative idempotent binary operations, the join and the meet, which are con- nected by a set of absorption laws (see 1.1). While skew lattices of idempotents in rings remain important sources of motivation, the results of (10-12) make it clear that skew lattices can sustain mathematical life on their own. Perhaps the most natural way to think about a skew lattice is as a noncommutative ana- logue of a lattice. As such, a skew lattice is not only an algebraic object, but also a geometric object. Thus far most of the research given in (10-12) has emphasized the algebraic side of skew lattices. The purpose of this paper is to investigate their geometric aspects and in particular the role of the natural partial order in determining their algebraic structure, much as a lattice is deter- mined by its natural partial ordering. It is not our goal, however, to reinvent lattice theory. Hence the geometry of a skew lattice will be studied relative to the fixed structure of its underlying lattice. Abstract:Logistic regression analysis has widespread applications in clinical disease diagnosis, but it has not yet been applied to assess the acceptance of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer. A prediction model was established to investigate the influencing factors of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in lung cancer patients in order to provide useful information for clinicians to develop targeted and effective treatment. A sample was admitted of lung cancer patients to Binzhou Medical University Hospital stays from January 2020 to June 2021. After investigating doctors, nurses, patients, managers and conducting expert demonstration, the questionnaire was formed. The questionnaire was filled out by the patient or the patient's family members. The factors in the questionnaire data of patients accepting and not accepting radiotherapy and chemotherapy were compared for univariate analysis, and the significantly different single factor were analyzed by multifactor logistic regression analysis, explored the influencing factors of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in lung cancer patients established a predictive model and drew the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve). The factors of two groups had statistically significant differences or no statistically significant differences. After multifactor logistic regression analysis was conducted, own personality, self-care ability, disease course classification, own attitude towards disease treatment, and family attitude towards disease treatment were included in the influencing factors of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer. Then, a predictive model was established. The area under the ROC curve of the predicted model was 0.973, the 95% confidence interval was 0.952–0.995, the optimal critical value was 0.832, the sensitivity was 91.84%, the specificity was 89.09%, and the accuracy was 90.85%. Based on logistic regression analysis, the prediction model could predict the extent of accepting radiotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer. Understanding the factors related to patients with lung cancer accepting radiotherapy and chemotherapy could provide useful information for the targeted and effective treatment by clinicians.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Biologics have demonstrated high efficacy in achieving 'almost complete' skin clearance in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. Nonetheless, achieving 'complete' skin clearance remains a treatment goal for some highly biologics-resistant patients, as residual lesions impact their quality of life.OBJECTIVE: The risk factors for failure to achieve a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 100 response in patients with good response to biologics remain unknown.METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the risk factors by comparing patients who achieved complete skin clearance (PASI100) with those who achieved almost complete skin clearance (PASI90). A database of 131 psoriasis patients treated with biologics, who achieved a PASI90 or PASI100 response, was reviewed from a tertiary referral hospital in South Korea. The patients were classified into PASI90 and PASI100 groups according to their PASI response.RESULTS: The PASI100 group had a lower prevalence of smoking history (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.14-0.85; <i>p</i>=0.021) and psoriasis on the anterior lower legs at baseline (adjusted OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.03-0.99; <i>p</i>=0.049) than patients in the PASI90 group.CONCLUSION: This study suggested that smoking history and psoriatic skin lesions on the anterior lower legs are considered as the risk factors for the failure to achieve a PASI100 response in psoriasis patients treated with biologics.

Abstract:Introduction Tobacco smoking is associated with the onset and severity of psoriasis, and understanding the prevalence of tobacco smoking among patients with psoriasis is critical due to its high physical and mental influence and heavy disease burden. However, evidence on the association between tobacco smoking and psoriasis severity is still limited in China. Objectives The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of tobacco smoking and explore the association between tobacco smoking and diseases severity among patients with psoriasis. Methods A total of 4,529 patients with psoriasis in 200 selected hospitals were recruited in China between January 2020 and September 2021. Detailed information covering demographic feature, tobacco smoking, and psoriasis history were collected through an electronic questionnaire, and clinical data were extracted from the health information system (HIS). SAS 9.4 was used for data analysis, and a p -value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The prevalence of tobacco smoking was 30.8%, with 24.6% for current smoking. The average Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score for patients with psoriasis was 9.4, with male patients having a higher PASI score than female patients. The odds ratio (OR) of former tobacco smoking prevalence was 1.5 [95% confidence interval (CI): (1.0–2.3)] for PASI score (3.0–7.0), 2.2 for PASI score (7.1–13.0), and 4.2 for PASI score >13, when compared with patients with PASI score < 3.0. Similarly, the OR of current tobacco smoking prevalence was 1.8 [95% CI: (1.5–2.2)] for PASI score (3.0–7.0), 1.9 for PASI score (7.1–13.0), and 3.1 for PASI score >13, when compared with patients with PASI score <3.0. The Spearman correlation analysis indicated that both tobacco smoking intensity and smoking duration were positively correlated with psoriasis severity ( p < 0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of tobacco smoking was high, especially among male patients with psoriasis and those with senior high education. Tobacco smoking was positively associated with psoriasis severity; moreover, both smoking intensity and smoking duration were positively correlated with the severity of psoriasis in a dose-dependent fashion.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles [Ni(C)] were synthesized using a modified arc-discharge reactor under methane atmosphere. The average particle size was revealed to be typically 10.5 nm with a spherical shape. The intimate and contiguous carbon fringe around these Ni nanoparticles is good evidence for complete encapsulation by carbon shell layers. Superparamagnetic property studies indicate that the blocking temperature (TB) is around 115 K at 1000 Oe applied field. Below TB, the temperature dependence of the coercivity is given by Hc = Hci[1 -(T/TB)1/2], with Hci approximately 500 Oe. Above TB, the magnetization M(H, T) can be described by the classical Langevin function L using the relationship M/Ms(T = 0) = coth(microH/kT)-kT/microH. The particle size can be inferred from the Langevin fit (particle moment mu) and the blocking temperature theory (TB), with values slightly larger than the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations. It is suggested that these assemblies of carbon-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles have typical single-domain, field-dependent superparamagnetic relaxation properties.
Effects of three different biologics on mental health and health-related quality of life in patients with psoriasis: a repeated cross-sectional survey of Chinese patients

Abstract:Objective: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory systemic disease that severely impacts patients’ quality of life (QoL) and psychological health. While biologics have been shown to be effective in treating psoriatic lesions, thus improving QoL, real-life data regarding such effects remain scant. We administered a repeated cross-sectional survey to assess the effects of 8 weeks of biologics treatment on the QoL and mental health status of patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Methods: From March to May 2022, patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis were enrolled and treated with biologics in the outpatient clinic at the Dermatology Hospital of Southern Medical University. Assessments were performed before treatment and after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment with biologics. Psoriasis severity, QoL, and mental health status were evaluated using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). A multivariate generalized estimating equations (GEE) analysis was used to account for repeated measures and to determine the effects of treatment duration and type of biological agent on relevant indicators. Results: Among the 78 enrolled patients, the ranges of pretreatment scores were 4.6–46.8 for the PASI, 1–30 for the DLQI, 31.5–100 for the physical component score (PCS) of the SF-36, 16.6–100 for the mental component score (MCS) of the SF-36, 0–15 for the HADS-A, and 0–17 for the HADS-D. After 8 weeks of biologics treatment, 98.7% (77/78) of patients had obtained PASI 75. All assessed scores changed over time (GEE, P < 0.05). Moreover, there were group-by-time interaction effects for the DLQI score (GEE, P = 0.023) and PCS (GEE, P = 0.029). The HADS-A and HADS-D scores were both decreased at week 8 compared with pretreatment values. Correlation analyses revealed that higher DLQI scores were associated with lower levels of QoL and higher levels of anxiety or depression. Conclusion: Biologics are not only effective in the treatment of skin lesions, but also exert beneficial effects upon the QoL and mental health of patients with psoriasis as determined in the short-term assessments conducted in this study.
