Abstract:Objective: Post-thyroidectomy patients commonly experience voice changes, swallowing symptoms, and neck discomfort, a condition known as post-thyroidectomy syndrome. The Thyroidectomy-Related Voice and Symptom Questionnaire (TVSQ) is a validated tool showing strong correlations with established tools with a potential predictive value for post-thyroidectomy voice outcomes. Our study aims to translate and validate the TVSQ into Arabic. Methods: This validation study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital and King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Forward and backward translations ensured the conceptual equivalence of the Arabic TVSQ (A-TVSQ) and were reviewed by an expert panel. A pilot test assessed the A-TVSQ's face validity and clarity, leading to necessary cultural adjustments. The final A-TVSQ was preoperatively and postoperatively administered to thyroidectomy patients to evaluate its test-retest reliability. Results: Data were collected from 116 participants (53 cases [45.6%] and 63 controls [54.3%]). The internal consistency analysis showed strong intercorrelation among the A-TVSQ items, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients (0.951) indicating excellent estimated internal consistency within both domains. Test-retest reliability showed a moderate level of reliability with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.696. A-TVSQ item discrimination analysis showed significant associations between the total and domain scores pre- and post-thyroidectomy. External validity analysis showed significant changes in A-TVSQ voice change (P < 0.010) and neck discomfort (P = 0.011) domains and total scores (P < 0.010) between before and 2 weeks after thyroidectomy. However, no significant changes were observed between 2 and 4 weeks after thyroidectomy. Conclusions: The translated and validated A-TVSQ showed excellent internal consistency and moderate test-retest reliability, comparable to the original version. Voice change significantly worsened after thyroidectomy, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and management strategies for this complication.

Abstract:Introduction . The wide variety of symptoms in patients with cardiac arrhythmias can affect daily living activities. The evaluation of symptoms with patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), with validated instruments, can provide information that contributes to clinical decisions and treatment. In Brazil, however, there is no available scale that evaluates symptoms in different types of arrhythmias. Purpose . This study aimed to translate the Arrhythmia-Specific Questionnaire in Tachycardia and Arrhythmia symptom scale (ASTA-symptom scale) and then validate the questionnaire in terms of Brazilian culture. Method . The methodological process of cultural adaptation used was based on international literature guidelines consisting of forward translation, synthesis, back translation, review by an expert committee, and pretest. Psychometric analyses were conducted with 140 patients. These included measuring internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), construct validity with item-total correlations, and convergent construct validity with correlations with the quality of life questionnaire for patients with atrial fibrillation-version 2 (QVFA-v2). Usability and understandability were evaluated through the usability evaluation of instruments. Results . The translation and adaptation processes were performed by obtaining the Brazilian Portuguese version of the original Swedish instrument. This version presented the internal consistency of items, evaluated through Cronbach’s α (0.79). Construct validity was demonstrated by item-total correlations for the nine items, all except one reached the level of >0.30 (0.24). Convergent validity showed a high correlation with QVFA-v2 (0.89). As for the evaluation of usability and understanding, after two small suggested changes, no additional alterations were necessary. Conclusion . The psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of ASTA-symptom scale evaluated in this study were satisfactory, and the scale was proved to be a valid and reliable tool to assess the symptom burden in patients with different forms of tachyarrhythmia. The ASTA-Br-symptom scale questionnaire can be an important addition to PROMs for patients with arrhythmias and could help healthcare professionals in decision-making.

Abstract:Transplant glomerulopathy (TG) is a histologic entity described more than four decades ago. In the last few years, our understanding of TG has improved significantly. Current evidence supports the postulate that TG is a unique pathologic and pathogenic entity distinct from other forms of chronic allograft injury. Detailed electron microscopic studies have shown basement membrane abnormalities in glomerular and peritubular capillaries, indicating that this is a disease of the entire renal capillary network. Staining biopsies for the complement fragment, C4d, showed positivity in subgroups of TG, suggesting the participation of antidonor antibodies. Consistent with this postulate, the incidence of TG is increased in patients with antidonor HLA antibodies prior to the transplant. The use of surveillance biopsies has demonstrated that TG can develop during the first few months after transplantation, although it may remain clinically quiescent for several years. However, TG is progressive, leading to reduced graft survival. Recent studies demonstrated a close association between TG and anti‐HLA class II antibodies. Current therapies for TG are likely of limited value. However, it is also likely that an improved understanding of TG pathogenesis will result in the development of effective therapies for this form of progressive kidney allograft damage.

Abstract:Introduction/Purpose: The Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS) was developed as a simple and self-reporting questionnaire for diagnosing and monitoring acute uncomplicated cystitis in female patients. It consists of 18 questions placed in four subcategories: (1) typical symptoms, (2) differential diagnosis, (3) quality of life and (4) coexisting gynecological conditions. It has been translated into many languages. The purpose of this work is the linguistic evaluation of ACSS in the Greek language. Materials and Methods: The translation of ACSS into Greek was carried out in accordance with international standards and guidelines. The process consisted of 4 stages: in the 1 st and 2 nd stage a translation was made into the target language (Greek) from the original (Russian, English) by native speakers, while reverse translation and re-evaluation was made by experts whose mother tongue language is the target language. In stage 3, a cognitive assessment was performed by female subjects with and without a history of uncomplicated urinary tract infection. At this stage, based on the degree of understanding, the final draft was chosen between the two drafts of different origins (Russian or English). In stage 4: the final clinical evaluation was performed by female subjects with acute episode of uncomplicated cystitis (Arm 1 - Patients) and female subjects undergoing treatment for any other diseases (Arm 2 - Control). The Memorandum of Understanding between the Greek Study Group of ACSS and the copyright holders of ACSS was made on 17 November 2019 while it has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Hospital. The diagnosis of acute uncomplicated cystitis was made based on the history and results of laboratory findings. Results: The two pre-final versions in Greek were randomly applied to 15 healthy women aged between 89 and 22 years. The mean age of the final sample was 23.84 years. The level of education differed between a doctorate and a primary school diploma with most participants graduating from universities (8/30) and high school (8/30). According to the answers, 20 women would prefer the English standard translation, compared to 10 women, who preferred the Russian translation. The 2: 1 ratio was similar whether the participants had higher education or not. No significant difference was observed in the mean age of the participants who chose one or the other version. Conclusion: The process of translating and adapting a study instrument such as a questionnaire for a different ethnic group is a difficult task since it requires to adapt it in a culturally relevant and comprehensible form despite peculiarities of the target language. Considering these difficulties, we were able to develop a linguistically validated Greek version of the ACSS, which now can be used for clinical and research purposes in a multidisciplinary fashion.

Abstract:Background: The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) is an easy, brief, self-administered questionnaire developed by Levine et al for the assessment of severity of symptoms and functional status of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. The aim of our study was to develop and validate the Greek version of BCTQ. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 90 patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome. The original English version of BCTQ was adapted into Greek using forward and backward translation. Reliability was assessed by internal consistency (Cronbach α and item-total correlation) and reproducibility. Validity was examined by correlating the Boston Questionnaire scores to Canterbury severity scale for electrodiagnostic severity grading. Results: The Greek version showed high reliability (Cronbach α 0.89 for Symptom Severity Scale and 0.93 for Functional Status Scale) and construct validity (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.53 for Symptom Severity Scale and 0.68 for Functional Status Scale). Test-retest were 0.75 for Symptom Severity Scale and 0.79 for Functional Status Scale ( P < .05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the optimal cutoff of Symptom Severity Scale for the discrimination of subjects with low electrodiagnostic severity grading than subjects with high electrodiagnostic severity grading was 1.95 with sensitivity equal to 75.5% and specificity equal to 68.3%. Conclusions: The Greek version of the BCTQ is a valid, reliable screening tool for assessment in daily practice of symptoms and functional status in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of dysphonia in children, several methods have been developed, including the Pediatric Voice Outcome Survey, the Pediatric Voice Handicap Index, and the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life (PVRQOL) Survey. The aim of this study was to analyze the validity of the Turkish version of the PVRQOL Survey. Methods: The PVRQOL Survey consists of 10 questions that evaluate the effects of dysphonia on quality of life. We translated it into Turkish by working with two translators and faculty from the English Grammar and Literature Department. The Turkish version was translated back into English by two bilingual individuals to assess accuracy. The final version was tested by 15 parents for pilot study. Following the pilot study, we enrolled 52 children who had been admitted to the outpatient clinic with dysphonia and 79 children who had no voice complaints. The parents of the children under 7 years were asked to answer the survey. Children aged between 7 and 9 years completed the survey with their parents, and children over 9 years completed the survey by themselves. Results: The results of the pilot study revealed no difference between the two groups. Intergroup comparisons revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the control and patient groups in terms of question responses. When the total scores of the two groups were compared, there was a significant difference. Conclusion: The Turkish version is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing dysphonic patients and healthy subjects.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Compassion constitutes a central element of all health and social care professions. The Professional Quality of Life Questionnaire is the most widely used instrument to measure compassion fatigue worldwide.AIM: The aim of this study was to culturally adapt the ProQOL V for Greece.METHOD: Forward-translations and back-translations were conducted by two bilingual translators (English-Greek) grown up in English speaking countries (USA, Australia) while cross-cultural adaptation followed strictly the recent WHO guidelines.RESULTS: A five-member expert-panel convened by the first author in order to identify and discuss inadequate expressions/concepts of the forward/backward translation resolved all discrepancies and reached consensus after two panel meetings. Overall, 90.0% of participants considered the instrument very good or good, and items were found relevant, easy to understand and with appropriate alternative answer categories for the three dimensions of CF.CONCLUSION: High quality self-report measures are necessary in evidence-based health and social care research and practice. Participants in a pre-test of the latest cross-culturally adapted version of ProQOL V verified the readability, comprehensibility and suitability of the instruments' items. After completion of the validation of the ProQOL V, it will become available to Greek researchers.
Cross‐cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the Patient Scar Assessment Questionnaire to the Spanish language in head and neck surgery

Abstract:<p>External appearance is the main aesthetic outcome in patients who undergo surgical procedures. Scars located in exposed areas, such as the neck and face, are important for patients. There are at least eight instruments that are used to evaluate postoperative scars, but few fulfil standard methodological conditions. The Patient Scar Assessment Questionnaire (PSAQ) was designed and validated using psychometric methodology. However, this scale has not been translated or validated in the Spanish language. The aim of this study was to undergo a cross‐cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the PSAQ scale to the Spanish language in patients who underwent head and neck surgery. We followed The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) guidelines for the translation and validation of health‐related scales. Forward and back translations were made by independent translators. We included adult patients who underwent thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, parotidectomy, and neck dissection. For the psychometric validation, we used a principal axis exploratory factor analysis with oblimin rotation. A reliability test involving Cronbachs alpha and the item‐total correlation was performed and for the convergent/concurrent validity, we selected the Spanish version of the Vancouver Scar Scale. A total of 180 patients were recruited. Factor analysis showed a five‐factor solution. Cronbachs alpha for the subscales was >0.7. The comparison between the PSAQ appearance subscale and the VSS demonstrated a high correlation (rho = − 0.89). In a sample of 62 patients, the test‐retest evaluation showed high correlation (0.74‐0.99). Our study supports the Spanish version of the PSAQ as a valid, reliable, and reproducible tool to assess the perception and impact of neck scars in Spanish‐speaking patients who undergo head and neck surgery.</p>

Abstract:Objectives: Voice disorders can profoundly impact health, quality of life, job performance, and social interactions. Traditional evaluations have expanded to include quality-of-life assessments, emphasizing self-reported outcomes. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) stands out among relevant questionnaires, with the VHI-10 being a concise derivative. This study was conducted to translate and validate the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) questionnaire for Persian speakers, enhancing clinical assessments of voice disorders and quality of life. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in Iran, involved (1) translating the VHI-10 into Persian, (2) confirming face and content validity using Content Validity Ratio (CVR), and Content Validity Index (CVI), and (3) evaluating its reliability through a survey. A panel of experts confirmed the validity, and reliability of the study, which was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, Spearman-Brown, and Guttman coefficients. The survey involved 225 participants, including 150 healthy people and 75 patients with voice disorders, who were selected using a convenience sampling method. Results: All question items demonstrated a CVI greater than 0.79 and a CVR between 0.62 and 1. Reliability analysis yielded high Cronbach's alpha values for functional, physical, and emotional domains (0.909) and total (0.961). The mean overall scores of VHI-10 for healthy and disordered groups were 18.78 and 0.74, respectively. The VHI-10 effectively discriminated between healthy and disordered groups in all domains, with an accuracy of 97.33%. The determined cut-off point was 4.5, with a strong area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (0.989). Conclusion: This study successfully adapted and validated the Persian version of the VHI-10. The questionnaire demonstrated high reliability and validity, distinguishing between individuals with and without voice disorders. This Persian version is now a valuable tool for speech and language pathologists conducting clinical voice evaluations in Iran and also it could be applied in studies to determine the effects of voice problems on participant's quality of life.
Translation and Validation of the Bulgarian Version of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire

Abstract:Background and Objective: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common mononeuropathy in humans. Despite the continuous improvement of diagnostic and treatment methods, difficulties remain in the evaluation and quantification of such symptoms as pain, paresthesias, hypesthesia, and hyperesthesia. Numerous tests and questionnaires have been developed for patients with upper limb disease, but the most specific for CTS and the most commonly used is the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ). BCTQ has been translated and validated for use in many languages, but there is no valid version in Bulgarian yet. The purpose of this work is to create and validate a Bulgarian version of BCTQ, with a recommendation for its use in Bulgarian patients. Methods: The process was divided into two parts. The first part included a translation and a cultural-linguistic adaptation of the Bulgarian version of BCTQ. In the second part, verification of the psychometric properties of the Bulgarian BCTQ, we investigated the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Bulgarian version of BCTQ. We evaluated BCTQ's construct validity by comparing its results with the score of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. The study was performed on a group of 64 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of CTS. All patients were evaluated using the BCTQ and DASH questionnaires. A subgroup of 26 patients underwent open surgical decompression of the carpal canal using a mini-incision technique. The subgroup was evaluated through BCTQ and DASH questionnaires preoperatively and through BCTQ postoperatively at the third month after the intervention. Results: In the first part of the study, the final version of the questionnaire was presented. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.88 for the Symptom Severity Scale (SSS) and 0.87 for the Functional Status Scale (FSS). The reproducibility of scores showed an extremely high degree of correlation between the two consecutive BCTQ scores at one-week interval (SSS r=0.99, p<0.0001; FSS r=1, p<0.0001). The criterion validity of the Bulgarian version of BCTQ revealed a strong correlation between the results of the BCTQ and the DASH questionnaires. (SSS r(62)=0.569, p<0.00001; FSS r(62)=0.605, p<0.00001). There was a statistically significant decrease in BCTQ results after surgery for both the SSS (t=-9.43, p<0.00001) and the FSS (t=-9.82, p<0.00001). Conclusion: Our study created a translated and culturally adapted version of BCTQ. The Bulgarian version of BCTQ is reliable, valid, and responsive for measuring symptoms and functional deficits in patients with CTS.
Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Screening Index for Voice Disorder (SIVD-TR)

Abstract:Objectives: We investigated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Screening Index for Voice Disorder (SIVD-TR). Methods: The original SIVD1 translated into Turkish, followed by a translation back into English by a linguist. The text was finalized by an evaluation committee. This translated version was then administered to a cohort of 223 teachers in Ankara, Turkey, encompassing both those with and without voice disorders (WVD and WOVD). After a duration of 7-14days, a random selection of 53 teachers underwent the questionnaire once more. Statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate the reliability and validity of the index. Cronbach's alpha and test-retest methods were used to scale the reliability. A cutoff point was determined to decide the risk of a voice disorder, by using a Receiver Operating Characteristic curve. The validation process is concluded by computing sensitivity and specificity values, comparing mean scores between WVD and WOVD subjects, and finally examining correlations between SIVD-TR and the Turkish version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10). Results: The internal consistency reliability exhibited high significance, with Cronbach's alpha measuring at 0.872. The test-retest correlation coefficient for the total scores was 0.80. The SIVD-TR consists of 12 symptoms, each accounting for 1 point on the scale. The identified cutoff for identifying the risk of a voice disorder is 4 (four) symptoms, with a sensitivity of 55.2%. A correlation of 69% was observed between SIVD-TR and VHI-TR. A significant association was noted between the risk of having a voice disorder and the actual presence of a voice disorder. Subjects with a voice disorder exhibited higher mean SIVD scores, providing further evidence of the questionnaire's discriminative validity. Conclusion: The Turkish adaptation of SIVD demonstrated both reliability and validity, establishing itself as a robust tool for identifying voice disorders.

Abstract:Purpose: To cross-culturally adapt the Voice Quality of Life Profile (IVQLP) into Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Methods: The cross-cultural adaptation process was performed in five stages: translation of the IVQLP into BP by three native BP experts fluent in American English; preparation of a consensus version; back-translation by a native American English expert fluent in BP; analysis by a committee of five experts and preparation of the final version of the instrument in BP, which was named IVQLP-Br; and pre-testing. The IVQLP-Br aims to assess the impacts of the voice more comprehensively, encompassing various areas of an individual's life. It has 43 items and a five-level response key. For the pre-test, the alternative "not applicable" was added as a response option. Thirty-six adults with self-reported risk of dysphonia participated in the pre-test. Results: In the translation stage, ten items were modified, and during the back-translation, 15 items required adjustments. No questions required reformulation after the application of the IVQLP-Br in the target population, because the option "not applicable" appeared in 12 responses without statistical significance. Conclusion: The version of the IVQLP translated into BP, named the IVQLP-Br, exhibited cross-cultural equivalence and was administrable for a more detailed analysis of the impact of the voice in different domains of an individual's life. After validation, the IVQLP-Br will be able to contribute both to clinical practice and to research with BP speakers.
Translation, validation, and first application of the Greek version of an irritable bowel syndrome severity scoring system

Abstract:Background The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS) is a selfadministered questionnaire that categorizes patients according to symptom severity. We aimed totranslate and adapt the English IBS-SSS, validate the Greek version, and detect factors predictive of IBS severity. Methods The original English version was obtained from the Rome Foundation, and the final Greek version arose through a process of translation, comprehensibility evaluation and backtranslation. The 141 participants enlisted in the study were enrolled from 2 tertiary hospitals and were divided into 2 groups (98 patients and 43 healthy volunteers). We evaluated the questionnaire properties based on COSMIN criteria. Results The recruited patients reported either diarrhea-predominant (34.7%), constipationpredominant (28.6%), or mixed subtype (36.7%) IBS. No significant variations were found regarding the frequency and intensity of abdominal pain and flatulence among the 3 IBS subtypes. Severity scores among healthy volunteers were significantly lower compared to IBS patients, irrespective of their disease subtype (P<0.001). The Cronbach coefficient (α) was calculated at 0.953, suggesting high inter-item internal consistency. The intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated and found to be high, suggesting good responsiveness of the questionnaire. Two-way MANOVA evaluation showed that demographic variables (age, family status, body mass index [BMI], smoking, and alcohol consumption) in the Greek population affect the IBS-SSS score and syndrome severity. Conclusions The Greek version of IBS-SSS is a reliable, valid and responsive tool for assessing Greek IBS patients' symptom severity. Older age, smoking, alcohol use and higher BMI are indicative of greater symptom severity. Abstract:In the spring of 1996, tonsillectomy, traditionally regarded as a procedure requiring hospitalization, began to be performed at the recently started day surgery unit at Danderyd Hospital. The article consists in a report of results obtained with a series comprising just over 200 children who were the first to undergo adenotonsillectomy in day surgery, and followed up, for instance, by questionnaire. There were no cases of complications requiring hospitalization during the first postoperative day. The parents were fairly satisfied with the care provided, though 25 per cent of them said that in the event of a new operation being necessary they would prefer that it be performed as an in-patient procedure.
Early Assessment of Voice Problems in Post-Thyroidectomy Syndrome Using Cepstral Analysis

Abstract:Post-thyroidectomy syndrome (PTS), characterized by voice issues after thyroidectomy without recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, was investigated in this study. The Voice Fatigue Index (VFI) and cepstral analysis were employed for subjective and objective voice evaluation. Retrospective analysis involved 96 patients (37 males, 59 females) who underwent thyroidectomy without nerve injury from April 2018 to June 2022. Assessments pre- and post-thyroidectomy included the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and VFI, along with auditory perceptual, acoustic (including cepstral), aerodynamic, and glottal vibration analyses. In females, although the GRBAS scale showed no significant change, both VHI and VFI increased post-thyroidectomy. Significant correlations were observed between the VHI and VFI in females. Acoustic analysis indicated a decrease in the cepstral peak prominence (CPP) of vowels (/a/) and sentences in females, with significant correlations between changes in the CPP/a/ and VHI/VFI. The maximum fundamental frequency (F0max) exhibited a significant decrease, correlating with the VHI and VFI changes. The VFI demonstrated effectiveness in subjective PTS voice evaluation, comparable to the VHI. The present study highlights the potential of cepstral analysis as an index reflecting subjective voice discomfort, suggesting its promise for a comprehensive PTS voice evaluation.

Abstract:Numerous investigations have consistently underscored the impact of societal stigma on the well-being of transgender individuals. The primary objective of the current research is to translate and adapt the Attitudes Toward Transgendered Individuals Scale into the Greek language. This scale specifically assesses stigma, excluding components such as discreteness and violence, and is tailored to evaluate individuals within the general populace. Employing confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and assessing gender metric equivalence, the analyses yielded highly favorable outcomes, demonstrating excellent scale fit, reliability, and construct validity, reflecting the robustness of the adapted tool for the Greek population.
Validity and reliability of the Greek translation of the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS)

Abstract:BackgroundJob satisfaction is fundamental to employee well-being and successful operation of an organization. The use of effective tools for assessing it is imperative for management research. Our main purpose was to translate and adapt the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) questionnaire to the Greek language and to test its psychometric properties.MethodsThe tool was translated into Greek and then back into English by different bilingual translators. The Greek JSS was tested with a sample of 239 employees of various specialties in drug addiction treatment. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for validity testing as well as internal consistency analysis for reliability testing was conducted.ResultsThe results confirmed that: (a) the translated version is an accurate translation of the original, (b) CFA results indicated that the nine-factor structure model was a great choice; the factor loads were high and ranged from 0.61 to 0.90, and (c) the reliability coefficients were satisfactory (Cronbach’s alpha for eight of the nine dimensions of the Greek JSS scale ranged from 0.62 to 0.87 except for the dimension “Operating procedures” which was 0.48, while Cronbach’s alpha for the total scale was 0.87 and the Gutman Split-Half Coefficient was 0.88).ConclusionsThe findings suggested that the Greek Version of JSS is a valid and reliable tool for measuring job satisfaction in Greece. Further research for assessing its psychometric values in various samples and further analysis for studying its validity and testing its internal and external consistency and coherence might be conducted in the future.
