Abstract:The reduction in the fast neutron inelastic scattering reaction with carbon was measured as a function of the increasing thickness of water through which the neutron beam had to penetrate. The data suggest that the half-value thickness of water is 9.2+or-1.1 cm for a 14.4 MeV neutron beam as used in this experiment. The half-life of 'prompt' radiative capture was measured using the torso section of a bush phantom containing a solution of ethanediol, urea and water. The half-life was found to be approximately 110 mu s.
