Abstract:Phthalates, categorized as a main constituent of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are present in polymeric products. These substances can enter the environment through several pathways, including improper handling, which leads to their presence in toilet water, floor washings, surface runoff, and landfill leachate. This study focuses on the performance analysis of nanocomposite materials made of polymer (polypyrrole), quasi-metal (graphene oxide), and biochar (from palmyra seed) for the elimination of diethyl phthalates (DEP) from aqueous environments. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to describe the nanocomposite characteristics. The experimental results supported a chemisorption process by agreeing well with the pseudo-second order. The Langmuir isotherm explained the DEP sorption data, which aligned to monolayer DEP adsorption on the nanocomposite surface. With a binding affinity of -13.36 (kcal/mol) and the highest docking score, Diethyl phthalates and graphene oxide interaction is validated. The produced nanocomposite is suggested as a possible alternative for the sorption of DEP. Future applications could benefit from the higher adsorption capacity, and environmental friendliness of nanocomposites.
Advanced sustainable processes via functionalized Fe–N co-doped fishbone biochar for the remediation of plasticizer di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-contaminated marine sediment

Abstract:Sediments are important sinks for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer, and thus, maintaining the sediment quality is essential for eliminating plasticizers in aqueous environments and recovering the sediment ecological functions. To mitigate the potential risks of endocrine-disrupting compounds, identifying an effective and eco-friendly degradation process of organic pollutants from sediments is important. However, sustainable and efficient utilization of slow pyrolysis for converting shark fishbone to generate shark fishbone biochar (SFBC) has rarely been explored. Herein, SFBC biomass was firstly produced by externally incorporating heteroatoms or iron oxide onto its surface in conjunction with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to promote DEHP degradation and explore the associated benthic bacterial community composition from the sediment in the water column using the Fe-N-SFBC/PMS system. SFBC was pyrolyzed at 300–900 °C in aqueous sediment using a carbon-advanced oxidation process (CAOP) system based on PMS. SFBC was rationally modified via N or Fe–N doping as a radical precursor in the presence of PMS (1 × 10 −5 M) for DEHP removal. The innovative SFBC/PMS, N-SFBC/PMS, and Fe-N-SFBC/PMS systems could remove 82%, 65%, and 90% of the DEHP at pH 3 in 60 min, respectively. The functionalized Fe 3 O 4 and heteroatom (N) co-doped SFBC composite catalysts within a hydroxyapatite-based structure demonstrated the efficient action of PMS compared to pristine SFBC, which was attributed to its synergistic behavior, generating reactive radicals (SO 4 •– , HO•, and O 2 •– ) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 ) involved in DEHP decontamination. DEHP was significantly removed using the combined Fe-N-SFBC/PMS system, revealing that indigenous benthic microorganisms enhance their performance in DEHP-containing sediments. Further, DEHP-induced perturbation was particularly related to the Proteobacteria phylum, whereas Sulfurovum genus and Sulfurovum lithotrophicum species were observed. This study presents a sustainable method for practical, green marine sediment remediation via PMS-CAOP-induced processes using a novel Fe-N-SFBC composite material and biodegradation synergy.

Abstract:Nano-Fe2O3 embedded in montmorillonite particles (Fe-Mt) were prepared to degrade diethyl phthalate (DEP) with citric acid (CA) under xenon light irradiation. Compared to pristine montmorillonite (Na-Mt), the embedding process increased 14.5-fold of iron content and 1.8-fold of specific surface area. The synthesized Fe-Mt have more oxygen vacancies than Fe2O3 nanoparticles (nFe2O3), which could induce more reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generation in the presence of CA under xenon lamp irradiation. Fe-Mt with CA enhanced photo-assisted degradation of DEP 2.5 times as compared to nFe2O3 with CA. Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and identification of products confirmed that surface-bound •OH was the main radical to degrade DEP. Common anions (i.e., NO3-, CO32-, Cl-) and humic acid could compete •OH with DEP and cause slower degradation of DEP. The removal efficiency of DEP was more than 56% with Fe-Mt after three recycles, and the dissolved Fe concentration from Fe-Mt was below 75 μmol/L, indicating Fe-Mt had a good stability as a catalyst. Fe-Mt together with CA appeared to be a promising strategy to remove organic pollutants in surface water, or topsoil under solar irradiation.

Abstract:Phthalate esters (PAEs) widely used as plasticizers in industrial products are a major threat to human health and water ecological security. In this work, chitin-based sponges doped with oxygen-modified graphitic carbon nitride (O-gCN) (ChCN) demonstrated adsorption-photocatalytic synergistic ability for the efficient removal of two typical PAEs, diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). The addition of O-gCN increased the sponge mechanical strength from 0.629 to 1.39 MPa, enabling materials with interconnected pores, excellent compressibility, and mechanical durability. The saturated adsorption capacities of DEP and DBP reached 37.41-42.93 mg g-1 for ChCN sponges, wherein the driving forces were hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pi-pi interactions. Notably, O-gCN significantly improved PAE removal by simultaneously enhancing the adsorption and photocatalytic effect of ChCN sponges due to its high catalytic activity, leading to 100% removal of DEP and DBP within 2 h. The degradation pathway of DEP was confirmed to be de-esterification. Finally, filtration columns assembled with ChCN sponges showed 87.8-90.9% PAE removal from water under natural light, and the removal efficiency did not significantly change even after three reuses, indicating stable removal performance and good reusability with potential for practical applications. The sponges also possessed good biocompatibility and biodegradability, as demonstrated through algal toxicity experiments and biodegra-dation tests. Therefore, this research presents a convenient method for preparation of compressible and reusable sponge materials from renewable biomass for efficient PAE removal from aqueous environments and has revealed the underlying mechanisms of such removal by the adsorption-photocatalysis synergistic effect.

Abstract:A novel biological carrier combining sponge and modified walnut shell biochar with Fe3O4 (3O4) was fabricated to achieve simultaneous removal of nitrate and diethyl phthalate (DEP). The optimal reaction conditions of the immobilized bioreactor were: carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 1.5, Fe2+ concentration of 20 mg L−1, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h. Under the optimal conditions and DEP concentration of 800 μg L−1, the highest removal efficiency of DEP and nitrate in the immobilized bioreactor with the novel biological carrier were 67.87% and 83.97% (68.43 μg L−1 h−1 and 1.71 mg L−1 h−1), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the novel biological carrier in this study carried more bio–sediments which is closely related to the denitrification efficiency. The gas chromatography (GC) data showed that the nitrogen production of the immobilized bioreactor (99.85%) was higher than that of another experimental group (97.84%). Fluorescence excitation–emission matrix (EEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) indicated the immobilized bioreactor emerged more extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) which was related to favourable biological stability under the DEP environment. Moreover, according to high–throughput sequencing data, the Zoogloea sp. L2 responsible for iron–reduction and denitrification was the main strain in this immobilized bioreactor.

Abstract:To study the adsorptive separation efficiency, adsorption and desorption performances of diethyl phthalate (DEP) were investigated with a functional polymer resin (NDA-702). A macroporous polymer resin (XAD-4) and a coal-based granular activated carbon (AC-750) were chosen for comparison. The kinetic adsorption data obeyed the pseudo-second-order rate model, and the adsorption processes were limited by both film and intraparticle diffusions. Adsorption equilibrium data were well fitted by the Freundlich equation, and the larger uptake and higher selection of NDA-702 than AC-750 and XAD-4 was probably due to the microporous structure, phenyl rings and polar groups on NDA-702. Thermodynamic adsorption studies indicated that the test adsorbents spontaneously adsorbed DEP, driven mainly by enthalpy change. Continuous fixed-bed runs demonstrated that there no significant loss of the resin's adsorption capacity and there was complete regeneration of NDA-702. The results suggest that NDA-702 has excellent potential as an adsorption material for water treatment.

Abstract:Increasing environmental threats from pharmaceutical and textile industry effluents necessitate sustainable solutions. Therefore, a sustainable effort to generate eco-friendly adsorbent for removal of contaminant is generated. The bio-nanocomposite was prepared by using leaf extract of Phyllanthus sp., zinc oxide, and magnesium doping (ZnMg@PH) for the removal of crystal violet (CV), brilliant green (BG), and diclofenac sodium (DS). The prepared nanosorbent was characterized by various instrumental techniques. According to BET analysis, the adsorbent demonstrates a substantial pore volume of 2.24 cc/g and mean pore size of 4.2 nm. HR-TEM analysis reveals nanostructure morphology and hexagonal crystalline lattice with a crystal density of 5.630 g/cm 3 was depicted by XRD. ZnMg@PH shows an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 53.76 mg/g for BG at pH 7, 51.02 mg/g for CV at pH 8, and 46.08 mg/g for DS at pH 3. The Langmuir isotherm analysis reveals monolayer adsorption for all three contaminants and follows pseudo-second-order kinetics at equilibrium time of 30, 60, and 90 min for BG, CV, and DS respectively. ZnMg@PH thermodynamic nature towards BG, CV, and DS was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. Moreover, ZnMg@PH shows excellent adsorption–desorption efficiency up to five cycles for both dyes and up to six cycles for DS. Therefore, ZnMg@PH proves to be a greener alternative for effective removal of dyes and drugs.

Abstract:Micro-pollutants (specifically antibiotics and personal care products) and potential bacterial contamination pose a severe threat to human health and marine life. The study derives indigenous novel fibrous hydrophobic nanocomposite, efficient in decontaminating the micro-pollutants (tetracycline (TC) and bisphenol A (BPA)) and potential pathogens ( S. pyogenes and E. coli ) from aqueous wastes. A facile method synthesizes the fibrous attapulgite (ATP)- poly(4-vinylpyridine- co -styrene) (PVP) framework decorated in situ with the Ag 0 nanoparticles (ATP@PVP/Ag 0 ). A greener method using the Artocarpus heterophyllus leaf extract derives the Ag 0 (NPs). Various analytical methods extensively characterize the materials. A comprehensive study that includes pH, concentration, background electrolytes, and ionic strength reveals the sorptive removal insights of TC and BPA utilizing the ATP@PVP solid. The elimination of tetracycline (TC) and bisphenol A (BPA) agrees well with the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The pH 3.07 and 6.06 favor removing TC and BPA with the capacity of 10.86 mg/g and 17.36 mg/g at 25 °C. The hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions predominate the sorption mechanism, and the material shows remarkable stability and reusability in repeated sorption/desorption operations. Similarly, the natural water implications and flow-bed system show fair applicability of solid in decontaminating the TC and BPA in an aqueous medium. Further, the material ATP@PVP/Ag 0 exhibits very high inhibition of potential pathogens S. pyogenes and E. coli and optimizes the solid dose and solution pH.

Abstract:In this paper, we compare the electrical properties of Ultra Thin Buried Oxide (UTBOX) Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator (FD-SOI) MOS devices for rotated and not rotated substrate with different gate lengths. We found a significant performance enhancement on FD-SOI PMOSFETs as expected, while keeping a good control of short channel effects. Surprisingly, to a lower extent, an improvement is also found for NMOS devices. We have also studied the carrier mobility degradation as a function of temperature and we point out the contribution of different mechanisms that reduce the mobility such as impurity Coulomb scattering, phonons and neutral defects as a function gate length. We find that there is no significant effect of rotated substrate on the mobility degradation. All these results are discussed and possible explanations are also given.
Composites of sodium alginate based - Functional materials towards sustainable adsorption of benzene phenol derivatives - Bisphenol A/Triclosan

Abstract:The present study evaluates the adsorption efficiency of low-cost carbonaceous adsorbents as fly ash (FA), saw dust biochar (SDB) (untreated and alkali - treated), live/dead pulverized white rot fungus Hypocrea lixii biomass encapsulated in sodium alginate (SA) against the commercially available activated carbon (AC) and graphene oxide (GO) SA beads for removal of benzene phenol derivatives - Bisphenol A (BPA)/triclosan (TCS). Amongst bi - and tri - composites SA beads, tri-composite beads comprising of untreated flyash - dead fungal biomass - sodium alginate (UFA - DB - SA) showed at par results with commercial composite beads. The tri - composite beads with point zero charge (Ppzc) of 6.2 was characterized using FTIR, XRD, surface area BET and SEM-EDX. The batch adsorption using tri - composite beads revealed removal of 93% BPA with adsorption capacity of 16.6 mg/g (pH 6) and 83.72% TCS with adsorption capacity of 14.23 mg/g (pH 5), respectively at 50 ppm initial concentration with 6 % adsorbent dose in 5 h. Freundlich isotherm favoring multilayered adsorption provided a better fit with r2 of 0.9674 for BPA and 0.9605 for TCS respectively. Intraparticle diffusion model showed adsorption of BPA/TCS molecules to follow pseudo - second order kinetics with boundary layer diffusion governed by first step of fast adsorption and intraparticle diffusion within pores by second slow adsorption step. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH°, ΔS°, ΔG°) revealed adsorption process as exothermic, orderly and spontaneous. Methanol showed better desorbing efficiency leading to five cycles reusability. The phytotoxicity assay revealed increased germination rate of mung bean (Vigna radiata) seeds, sprinkled with post adsorbed treated water (0 h, 5 h and 7 h) initially spiked with 50 ppm BPA/TCS. Overall, UFA - DB - SA tri - composite beads provides a cost effective and eco - friendly matrix for effective removal of hydrophobic recalcitrant compounds.
Fabrication of 1-octane sulphonic acid modified nanoporous graphene with tuned hydrophilicity for decontamination of industrial wastewater from organic and inorganic contaminants

Abstract:This research work is based on the fabrication of a graphene oxide-based composite (GOBC) to remove the maximum number of contaminants from different industrial effluents. The GO was first intercalated with 1-octanesulphonic acid sodium salt and subjected to microwave irradiation to produce GOBC. Fixed-bed column tests and Jar-tests were performed for removal of the most harmful endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as bisphenol A, bisphenol S, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, dyes (methylene blue and violate) and toxic metal ions such as Pb2+, Li+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cr6+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu2+, and As5+via adsorption. The prepared material was thoroughly characterized for its unique functional and structural properties. The results obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, water contact angle and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the successful preparation of GOBC using the proposed intercalation/microwave method. The water contact angle results showed decreased hydrophilicity of GOBC as compared to GO as the contact angle of GOBC (77.75°) was higher than that of GO (53.98°). The effects of main column parameters such as bed height, initial analyte concentration and solution flow rate were investigated. The results revealed that shorter breakthrough time, and high adsorption capacity were obtained at high flow rates of 1 mL min-1, while longer breakthrough time and lower adsorption capacity were obtained at lower flow rates of 0.5 mL min-1. The effect of bed depth on the breakthrough curve of analyte adsorption was a steep breakthrough curve; or a shorter breakthrough time occurring at lower bed height. The adsorption data obeyed the Yoon-Nelson and Thomas models very well. The adsorption capacity for BPA, BPS, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, methylene blue and violate was found to be 307, 305, 260, 290, 230 and 195 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity of GOBC for toxic metal ions such as Pb2+, Li+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cr6+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu2+, and As5+ was found to be 156, 136, 126, 124, 118, 114, 82, 82, 72 and 72 mg g-1, respectively with excellent kinetics. The adsorption data obtained using Jar-tests revealed that GOBC obeys a Langmuir isotherm and a pseudo second order kinetics model. The analysis of industrial wastewater samples showed good removal efficiency of GOBC.

Abstract:Modification of the structure and the surface of the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with transition organo-metallic compounds for photocatalytic applications has been expanded in recent years. In this study, ferrocene was selected to attach onto the graphitic carbon nitride (Fc/g-C3N4) via imino bonds between ferrocene carboxaldehyde and the amino group of the g-C3N4 to increase photocatalytic efficiency for the decomposition of co-polymer, diethyl phthalate (DEP). The ferrocene was grafted onto the g-C3N4 and identified with FT-IR, Raman, XRF, XRD, XPS, UV-visible DRS, photo-luminescence (PL), SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, BET, photocurrent, EIS and cyclic voltammetry. Photodegradation was performed in an aqueous medium with Fc/g-C3N4 in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Decomposition of the DEP was carried out under electromagnetic radiation with different wavelengths and pH. The best degradation was obtained in the presence of blue light and acidity conditions. The active species that play a key role in this degradation is (•OH) which is formed during the photocatalytic performance of Fc/g-C3N4. The degradation process was completely followed by HPLC. The feasible mechanism for the photo degradation of DEP was also proposed and discussed in detail.

Abstract:Nanocomposites have emerged as promising materials for pollutant removal due to their unique properties. However, conventional synthesis methods often involve toxic solvents or expensive materials. In this study, we present a novel ternary nanocomposite synthesized via a simple, cost-effective vacuum filtration method. The composite consists of calcium phosphate (CaP), biowaste-derived nanocellulose (diameter <50 nm) (NC), and chitosan (CH). The nanocomposite exhibited exceptional pollutant removal capabilities due to the hybrid approach of combining adsorption and size exclusion that widens and accelerates pollutant removal. When tested with synthetic wastewater containing 10 ppm of Ni ions and 10 ppm of Congo red (CR) dye, it achieved impressive removal rates of 98.7% for Ni ions and 100% for CR dye. Moreover, the nanocomposite effectively removed heavy metals such as Cd, Ag, Al, Fe, Hg, Mo, Li, and Se at 100%, and Ba, Be, P, and Zn at 80%, 92%, 87%, and 97%, respectively, from real-world municipal wastewater. Importantly, this green nanocomposite membrane was synthesized without the use of harmful chemicals or complex modifications and operated at a high flux rate of 146 L/m 2 .h.MPa. Its outstanding performance highlights its potential for sustainable pollutant removal applications.

Abstract:The environmental impact of pesticides, together with the increasing regulatory framework on sewage sludge disposal, has raised a great political and social concern. Neonicotinoid pesticides, such as imidacloprid (IMD), thiamethoxam (THM), and acetamiprid (ACT), have been included among the main emerging pollutants on the latest EU Watch Lists derived from Directive 2008/105/EC. This research aims at valorising an industrial sludge through the synthesis of a biogenic activated carbon for the continuous adsorption of the aforementioned plaguicides from multicomponent aqueous solutions. AC-Industrial2 was prepared by combining chemical and physical activation, resulting in a mesoporous material with a high surface area (S BET = 750 m 2 ∙g −1 ) and a strong affinity for the micropollutants tested. The sludge-derived adsorbent achieved maximum adsorption capacity values at equilibrium of 124.3, 124.4 and 153.1 mg∙g −1 for ACT, THM and IMD, respectively. Therefore, this material not only presented similar removal yields to those obtained with the commercial material (AC-F400), but also it considerably favoured the adsorption kinetics due to its great mesoporosity contribution. The best fitting of experimental kinetic data was found by using pseudo-first order model, while Freundlich model successfully fitted most of the equilibrium adsorption isotherms. The breakthrough behaviour of the multicomponent fixed-bed system for AC-Industrial2 was related to the pesticides' hydrophobicity, rather than the molecular volume of the pollutants. Additionally, an overshooting phenomenon was noticed for the weakest adsorbable components (THM and ACT). The sorbent developed in this work allowed a bed utilisation in the range 51–67.2 %, whereas the commercial material led to values between 7.0 and 8.3 %. This fact, together with the complete and efficient regeneration of the novel material by a Fenton process, highlighted its excellent reusability and stability for scale-up.

Abstract:Green chemistry has brought to the spotlight new sets of principles for reducing or eliminating hazardous substances in the synthesis and application of processes and products. Despite its noteworthy growth, this area still lacks studies that compare the potential of greener materials with those conventionally synthesized. Herein, novel materials based on chitosan and reduced graphene oxide were developed via the green (G-Fe/CS/rGO) and conventional routes (C–Fe/CS/rGO). Eucalyptus leaves extract and proanthocyanidin were used in the green approach as reducing/capping and crosslinking agents, respectively, replacing hydrazine and glutaraldehyde, commonly used in conventional synthesis. In addition, carbon nanotubes were also modified with plant extracts. The effect of different rGO contents was evaluated through adsorptive assays. Furthermore, the adsorption potential of C–Fe/CS/rGO, G-Fe/CS/rGO and green CNTs. Priority “Produced Water” contaminants of such as anthracene (ANT), fluoranthene (FLT), phenol (PE), and cyclohexane carboxylic acid (CHA) were used as target contaminants. The best materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS and Zeta potential analyses. C–Fe/CS/rGO-3% removed 86.6%, 89.3%, 13.4%, and 33.6%, G-Fe/CS/rGO-7% removed 83.2%, 83.9%, 6.7% and 30.3 % and CNT-E 82.9%, 97.6%, 10.7% and 12.4% of ANT, FLT, PE, and CHA, respectively. Green and conventional beads showed similar performance, indicating the promising use of green synthesis. CNT-E, which demonstrated the best adsorption capacity, was used in reuse assays to assess its feasibility. The material kept FLT removal above 85% after four consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. Molecular modelling analysis indicated that CHA has greater stability, followed by PE, FLT and ANT, agreeing with the experimental results.

Abstract:The utilization of advanced adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ion pollution from organic dyes and industrial wastewater has garnered significant research interest. In this study, a novel composite gel consisting of chitosan modified diatomite (DE/CS), sodium alginate (SA), and polyethyleneimine (PEI) (DE/CS-PEI@SA) was synthesized using the ion crosslinking method. The composite gels were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermal gravimetric analysis (DSC/TGA), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller systems (BET). Their adsorption properties and mechanisms towards copper Cu(II) and lead Pb(II) ions were investigated using infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive spectroscopy, (EDS) and Zeta potential analyses. The DE/CS-PEI@SA composite gels exhibited numerous uniform folds on its surface, boasting a specific surface area (18.96 m 2 /g) and a pore size ranging from 1.5 to 80.0 nm, demonstrating robust thermal stability pre- and post- adsorption. Notably, the composite gels demonstrated impressive adsorption capacities for Cu(II) (174.39 mg/g) and Pb(II) (295.04 mg/g), respectively. The incorporation of DE/CS and PEI into the composite gel contributed to a complex pore structure with numerous accessible sites. The adsorption behavior of the composite gel was effectively described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The primary adsorption mechanism was characterized by single-molecule chemisorption, which encompassed coordination adsorption, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the composite gel demonstrated significant efficiency in adsorption, cost-effectiveness, and ease of separation, making it a promising candidate for wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract:Although water occupies 75% of the earth's surface, only 0.0067% of the total water is available for human activities. These statistics further decline with the population growth and consequent multiplication in the amount of annual waste produced. The demand for clean and safe drinking water has always been a prime concern in the global scenario. Among various types of waste materials, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceutical effluents have become a constant threat to the aquatic ecosystem and possess challenges worldwide. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a mixed group of emerging concern chemicals with the ability to mimic the mechanisms of biosynthesis, transport, and metabolism of hormones. These chemicals pose various health threats such as early puberty, infertility, obesity, diabetes, reproductive disorders, cancerous tumors, and related disorders (immune cells, hormones' activity, and various organs). On the other hand, pharmaceutical compounds such as antibiotics also harm the natural environment, human health, and soil microbiology. Their low concentration, ranging from a few ng/L to μg/L, gives rise to a micro-pollution phenomenon, which makes it difficult to detect, analyze, and degrade in wastewater treatment plants. Activated carbons (ACs) and other adsorbents, including naturally occurring materials (wood, keratin) are considered as nanomaterials (NMs) reference for the separation of organic pollutants. It is generally acknowledged that mass-transfer phenomena control sorption kinetics at the liquid/solid interface, with retention controlled by the sorbent/sorbate properties. Therefore, the type of interaction (strong or weak van der Waals forces) and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the adsorbent are two crucial factors. Besides, EDCs and pharmaceutical compound sorption on such kinds of nanoporous solids depend on both the molecule size and charge density. The applications of nanomaterials on non-conservative methods, like advanced oxidation processes or AOPs (e.g., photocatalysis and Fenton reaction), are contemplated as more apt in comparison to conservative technology like reverse osmosis nanofiltration, and adsorption, etc. One of the reasons is that AOPs generate free radicals (hydroxyls), which are strong oxidants for the demineralization of organic compounds and the extreme case that hydroxyl radicals can attack any kinds of pollutants with the generation of only water and carbon dioxide as final products. AOPs may imply the use of NMs as either catalysts or photocatalysts, which improve the selective removal of the target pollutant. Therefore, various literature reviews have revealed that there is a timely need to upgrade the efficiency of the remediation approaches to protect the environment against EDCs and pharmaceuticals adequately. There is currently a lack of definitive risk assessment tools due to their complicated detection and associated insufficiency in the health risk database. Hence, our present review focuses on applying carbon-based nanomaterials to remove EDCs and pharmaceuticals from aqueous systems. The paper covers the effect of these pollutants and photocatalytic methods for treating these compounds in wastewater, along with their limitations and challenges, plausible solutions, and prospects of such techniques.

Abstract:The present work demonstrates a novel strategy of synthesizing iron-biochar (Fe@BCSB) composite made with the waste iron bottle cap and sugar cane bagasse for implementation in the three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3DEF) process. The catalytic ability of the Fe@BCSB composite was explored to remediate the sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) surfactant from wastewater at neutral pH. At the optimum operating condition of Fe@BCSB dose of 1.0 g L-1, current density of 4.66 mA cm-2, and Na2SO4 dose of 50 mM, nearly 92.7 ± 3.1% of 20 mg L-1 of SDS abatement was attained during 120 min of electrolysis time. Moreover, the Fe@BCSB showed significant recyclability up to six cycles. Besides, other organics were successfully treated with more than 85% abatement efficiency in the proposed Fe@BCSB-supported 3DEF process. The total operating cost obtained during SDS treatment was around 0.31 US$ m-3 of wastewater. The phytotoxicity test revealed the positive impact of the 3DEF-treated effluent on the germination of the Vigna radiata. The electron paramagnetic resonance conveyed •OH as the prevailing reactive species for the oxidation of SDS in the 3DEF process. Further, about 81.3 ± 3.8% of SDS and 53.7 ± 4.1% of mineralization efficacy were acquired from the real institutional sewage.
