Abstract:Today’s electronic devices are fabricated using highly toxic materials and processes which limits their applications in environmental sensing applications and mandates complex encapsulation methods in biological and medical applications. This paper proposes a fully resorbable high density bio-compatible and environmentally friendly solution processable memristive crossbar arrays using silk fibroin protein which demonstrated bipolar resistive switching ratio of 104 and possesses programmable device lifetime characteristics before the device gracefully bio-degrades, minimizing impact to environment or to the implanted host. Lactate dehydrogenase assays revealed no cytotoxicity on direct exposure to the fabricated device and support their environmentally friendly and biocompatible claims. Moreover, the correlation between the oxidation state of the cations and their tendency in forming conductive filaments with respect to different active electrode materials has been investigated. The experimental results and the numerical model based on electro-thermal effect shows a tight correspondence in predicting the memristive switching process with various combinations of electrodes which provides insight into the morphological changes of conductive filaments in the silk fibroin films.

Abstract:The practical implementation of memristors in neuromorphic computing and bio‐mimetic sensing suffers from unexpected temporal and spatial variations due to the stochastic formation and rupture of conductive filaments (CFs). Here, we patterned the bio‐compatible silk fibroin (SF) with an on‐demand nanocone array by using thermal scanning probe lithography (t‐SPL) to guide and confine the growth of CFs in the Silver/Silk Fibroin/Gold (Ag/SF/Au) memristor. Benefiting from the high fabrication controllability, cycle‐to‐cycle (temporal) standard deviation of the set voltage for the structured memristor has been significantly reduced by ∼95.5% (from 1.535 V to 0.0686 V) and the device‐to‐device (spatial) standard deviation has also been reduced to 0.0648 V. Besides, the statistical relationship between the structural nanocone design and the resultant performance was confirmed, optimizing at the small operation voltage (∼0.5 V) and current (100 nA), ultrafast switching speed (sub‐100 ns), large on/off ratio (104), and the smallest switching slope (SS < 0.01 mV/dec). Finally, the short‐term plasticity and leaky integrated‐and‐fire behavior were emulated, and a reliable thermal nociceptor system was demonstrated for practical neuromorphic applications. Abstract:Water-stable proteins may offer a new field of applications in smart materials for buildings and infrastructures where hydraulic reactions are involved. In this study, cement mortars modified through water-soluble silk fibroin (SF) are proposed. Water-soluble SF obtained by redissolving SF films in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) showed the formation of a gel with the β sheet features of silk II. Electrical measurements of SF indicate that calcium ions are primarily involved in the conductivity mechanism. By exploiting the water solubility properties of silk II and Ca2+ ion transport phenomena as well as their trapping effect on water molecules, SF provides piezoresistive and piezocapacitive properties to cement mortars, thus enabling self-sensing of mechanical strain, which is quite attractive in structural health monitoring applications. The SF/cement-based composite introduces a capacitive gauge factor which surpasses the traditional resistive gauge factor reported in the literature by threefold. Cyclic voltammetry measurements demonstrated that the SF/cement mortars possessed memcapacitive behavior for positive potentials near +5 V, which was attributed to an interfacial charge build-up modulated by the SF concentration and the working electrode. Electrical square-biphasic excitation combined with cyclic compressive loads revealed memristive behavior during the unloading stages. These findings, along with the availability and sustainability of SF, pave the way for the design of novel multifunctional materials, particularly for applications in masonry and concrete structures.

Abstract:Physically transient electronics have attracted increasing attention recently due to their potential as the basis for building "green" electronics and biomedical devices. In the development of transient devices for biomedical applications, however, the dilemma between the strictly required biodegradability and device performance has brought great difficulties to the material selection. In this paper, we introduced silk fibroin as dielectric layer to fabricate biodegradable resistive memory devices. Comprising a W/silk fibroin/Mg sandwich structure, stable bipolar resistive switching behavior with good repeatability and device variability was obtained, surpassing most organic resistive memory and comparable to inorganic resistive memory. The carrier-transport evolution process was carefully examined to reveal the mechanism behind resistive switching. A switching model regarding the formation of metallic conductive filament was proposed by considering both the nature of silk fibroin dielectric layer and the key role of active metal electrode. Furthermore, the solubility test in phosphate-buffered saline indicates the device exhibiting physically transient behavior and good biodegradability. Good mechanical property and flexibility were also demonstrated through electrical testing under different bending conditions. These results suggest that our device is a promising memory element candidate for constructing transient electronic system, especially for biomedical applications.
A Natural Silk Fibroin Protein‐Based Transparent Bio‐Memristor

Abstract:The recent discovery of nanoelectronics memristor devices has opened up a new wave of enthusiasm and optimism in revolutionizing electronic circuit design, marking the beginning of new era for the advancement of neuromorphic, high‐density logic and memory applications. Here a highly non‐linear dynamic response of a bio‐memristor is demonstrated using natural silk cocoon fibroin protein of silkworm, Bombyx mori. A film that is transparent across most of the visible spectrum is obtained with the electronic‐grade silk fibroin aqueous solution of ca. 2% (wt/v). Bipolar memristive switching is demonstrated; the switching mechanism is confirmed to be the filamentary switching as observed by probing local conduction behavior at nanoscale using scanning tunneling microscopy. The memristive transition is elucidated by a physical model based on the carrier trapping or detrapping in silk fibroin films and this appears to be due to oxidation and reduction procedures, as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry measurements. Hence, silk fibroin protein could be used as a biomaterial for bio‐memristor devices for applications in advanced bio‐inspired very large scale integration circuit design as well as in biologically inspired synapse links for energy‐efficient neuromorphic computing.

Abstract:Silk fibroin (SF) is a natural polymer with excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties and moderate human body degradability, making SF an interesting candidate for regenerative medicine. Composite materials of SF and polyethylene glycidyl methacrylate (PEGDMA), a biocompatible polymer, attract attention as scaffold materials for regenerative medicine. To the authors' knowledge, SF–PEGDMA composite hydrogels have thus far not been manufactured using optical fabrication methods, and the change in their compressive properties during their degradation has not been studied. In addition, cellulose nanofiber (CNF), a plant-derived nanomaterial with excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, was added to the SF–PEGDMA hydrogels to enhance their mechanical properties. SF–PEGDMA composite hydrogels were three-dimensionally printed using digital light processing. The compressive strength of the obtained hydrogels stored in pure water or phosphate buffer solution temporarily increased and decreased after 4 days. However, after 7 days, the strength decreased to a level similar to that of the specimens which did not contain CNF. In the formability tests, the reproducibility of the model changed with the intensity of the light and the CNF concentration.

Abstract:Piezoelectric biomaterials are intrinsically suitable to convert mechanical energy to electrical output and achieve electricity generation, in vivo/in vitro real-time monitoring, and sensing in biological systems. However, the inability to fabricate piezoelectric bio-materials with excellent piezoelectricity, full biodegradability, and good biocompatibility remains a challenge toward practical applications. As a solution, we present a bio-piezoelectric thin film with macroscopic piezoelectric output, high stability, fast response ability, flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability based on nascent silk nanoribbons (SNRs) with high silk II-type structure. The solvent systems influence the meso/nanostructure and the piezoelectric performance of silk materials. Compared with other silk materials, the SNR fabricated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl oxidation system (T-SNR) maintains higher silk II-type structure and more stable crystalline structure. The T-SNR film possesses electrostriction effect without electrical poling treatment. It presents an apparent piezoelectric constant (d 33 ) of 7.7 pm/V and a piezoelectric voltage coefficient (g 33 ) of 0.58 Vm/N, such values are superior to most reported bio-films. The piezoelectric T-SNR film can realize in vivo/in vitro real-time monitoring, sensing, and self-power ability. With its natural compatibility and degradability, the T-SNR film exhibits the potential for various implantable and wearable applications and may enable the development of fully biodegradable transient electromechanical devices.

Abstract:Silk fibroin (SF), known for its biocompatibility and versatility, has been widely studied in tissue engineering and biomedical devices. The modification of silk fibroin with photoreactive groups has been used to create novel biomaterials that undergo a liquid-to-solid transition upon exposure to light, enabling precise control over structure formation, pore geometry, and degradation. This advancement of photofibroin (PF) has been shown for the biofabrication of hydrogels, 3D scaffolds, and micro-patterned surfaces suitable for biomedical applications, including tissue scaffolds and bioelectronics. Here, we present a further improvement using a water based ternary solvent of calcium chloride-ethanol-water (Ajisawa reagent (AR)), to dissolve photofibroin, offering a sustainable alternative to previously used organic solvents. PF in AR is shown to be compatible with various light-based manufacturing techniques including soft lithography, photolithography, and 3D printing, enabling the fabrication of multiscale structures with high fidelity. The gels formed demonstrate excellent cytocompatibility, supporting cell adhesion and growth without additional coatings, making them ideal for regenerative medicine. The integration of conductive polymers, such as PEDOT:PSS as a 3D printable conducting gel opens possibilities for bioelectronics. The research represents a significant step forward in employing the versatile photofibroin as a sustainable, high-performance biomaterial for diverse applications.

Abstract:Memristors based neuromorphic devices can efficiently process complex information and fundamentally overcome the bottleneck of traditional computing based on von Neumann architecture. Meanwhile, natural biomaterials have attracted significant attention for biologically integrated electronic devices due to their excellent biocompatibility, mechanical flexibility, and controllable biodegradability. Thus, biomaterial‐based memristors may have a transformative impact on bridging electronic neuromorphic systems and biological systems. However, the working voltage in biological system is low, but the operation voltages of conventional memristors are high, violating the energy‐efficient biological system. Here, high‐performance silk fibroin‐based threshold switching (TS) memristors are demonstrated, which reveal an on‐current of 1 mA, a low threshold voltage (Vth) of 0.17 V, a high selectivity of 3 × 106, and a steep turn‐on slope of <2.5 mV dec–1. Meanwhile, the silk TS devices depict outstanding device uniformity and stability even at high humidity (80%) and temperature (70 °C) environments. The silk TS devices exhibit typical short‐term plasticity (STP) of biological synapses including pair‐pulse facilitation (PPF). More importantly, a leaky integrate‐and‐fire (LIF) artificial neuron is successfully realized based on the volatile characteristics of silk TS memristors. These achievements pave the way for utilizing silk biomaterials in advanced bioelectronics and neuromorphic computing. A volatile threshold switching (TS) memristor based on silk biomaterials doped with uniformly dispersed silver nanoparticles is achieved, which reveals an on‐current of 1 mA, a low operative voltage of 0.17 V, and high uniformity. The silk TS device can function as both artificial synapses and leaky integrate‐and‐fire artificial neurons, promising for future bio‐integrated low‐power neuromorphic electronics.

Abstract:Despite extensive research, current methods for creating three-dimensional (3D) silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds lack control over molecular rearrangement, particularly in the formation of β-sheet nanocrystals that severely embrittle SF, as well as hierarchical fiber organization at both micro- and macroscale. Here, we introduce a fabrication process based on electrowriting of aqueous SF solutions followed by post-processing using an aqueous solution of sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4). This approach enables gelation of SF chains via controlled β-sheet formation and partial conservation of compliant random coil structures. Moreover, this process allows for precise architecture control in microfiber scaffolds, enabling the creation of 3D flat and tubular macro-geometries with square-based and crosshatch microarchitectures, featuring inter-fiber distances of 400 μm and ~97% open porosity. Remarkably, the crosslinked printed structures demonstrated a balanced coexistence of β-sheet and random coil conformations, which is uncommon for organic solvent-based crosslinking methods. This synergy of printing and post-processing yielded stable scaffolds with high compliance (modulus = 0.5–15 MPa) and the ability to support elastic cyclic loading up to 20% deformation. Furthermore, the printed constructs supported in vitro adherence and growth of human renal epithelial and endothelial cells with viability above 95%. These cells formed homogeneous monolayers that aligned with the fiber direction and deposited type-IV collagen as specific marker of healthy extracellular matrix, indicating that both cell types attach, proliferate, and organize their own microenvironment within the SF scaffolds. These findings represent a significant development in fabricating organized stable SF scaffolds with unique microfiber structures and mechanical and biological properties that make them highly promising for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract:As a kind of biocompatible material with long history, silk fibroin is one of the ideal platforms for on-skin and implantable electronic devices, especially for self-powered systems. In this work, to solve the intrinsic brittleness as well as poor chemical stability of pure silk fibroin film, mesoscopic doping of regenerated silk fibroin is introduced to promote the secondary structure transformation, resulting in huge improvement in mechanical flexibility (∼250% stretchable and 1000 bending cycles) and chemical stability (endure 100 °C and 3–11 pH). Based on such doped silk film (SF), a flexible, stretchable and fully bioabsorbable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is developed to harvest biomechanical energy in vitro or in vivo for intelligent wireless communication, for example, such TENG can be attached on the fingers to intelligently control the electrochromic function of rearview mirrors, in which the transmittance can be easily adjusted by changing contact force or area. Abstract:Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) has been reported as a convenient natural material for regenerative medicine, optoelectronics, and many other technological applications. SF owes its unique features to the hierarchical organization of the fibers. Many efforts have been made to set up protocols for dissolution since many applications of SF are based on regenerated solutions and fibers, but chaotropic conditions required to disassemble the packing of the polymer afford solutions with poor crystalline behavior. Our previous research has disclosed a dissolution and regeneration process of highly crystalline fibers involving lanthanide ions as chaotropic agents, demonstrating that each lanthanide has its own unique interaction with SF. Herein, we report elucidation of the structure of Ln-SF fibers by the combined use of Raman spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and solid-state NMR techniques. Raman spectra confirmed the coordination of metal ions to SF, WAXS results highlighted the crystalline content of fibers, and solid-state NMR enabled the assessment of different ratios of secondary structures in the protein.

Meso‐Reconstruction of Silk Fibroin based on Molecular and Nano‐Templates for Electronic Skin in Medical Applications

Abstract:A unique strategy of mesoscopic functionalization starting from silk fibroin (SF) materials to the fabrication of meso flexible SF electronic skin (e‐skin) is presented. Notably, SF materials of novel and enhanced properties of the materials can be achieved by mesoscopically reconstructing the hierarchical structures of SF materials, based on rerouting the refolding process of SF molecules by meso‐nucleation templating. Mesoscopic hybridization/reconstruction endows cocoon silk with a robust mechanical and electric performance by incorporating wool keratin (WK) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the mesostructures of SF via intermolecular templated nucleation. Furthermore, the asymmetrical meso‐functional films with biocompatibility and insulation on one side and conductivity on the other (square resistance = 130 Ω sq−1) endow the passive wireless e‐skin exhibited a tunable sensitivity from −1.05 to −6.35 kPa−1 with a lossless measurement range of ≈2 kPa. The pulses of human subjects are monitored using the e‐skin to evaluate blood vessel hardening and real‐time dynamic systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A unique mesoscopic functionalization strategy from silk fibroin (SF) material for the preparation of mesoscopic flexible SF electronic‐skin is proposed. These revolutionary steps enable meso‐hybrid SF to be adopted to fabricate flexible, biocompatible, and highly sensitive stress sensors for continuous physiological conditions monitoring.

Abstract:Development of biomaterial based flexible electronics has got intensive attention owing to the potential applications in the wearable and epidermal devices. Silk fibroin, as a natural textile material with excellent performance, has been widely concerned by industry and academy. However, the property of electrical insulation limits his development in the field of flexible electronics. In this paper, a regenerated silk fibroin/carbon nanotube (RSF/CNT) conductive film has been successfully fabricated and applied in flexible capacitive-type pressure sensor and wearable triboelectric nanogenerator by a facile method. The electrical conductivity and mechanical property of RSF/CNT film was optimized by investigating with different composite ratio from 10 to 90% (WRSF/WCNT). The RSF/CNT film has a good photothermal response and electric heating performance. We furtherly demonstrated that the RSF/CNT based sensor can be used as epidermal self-powered sensor for multifunction human motion monitoring and Morse code compilation. The observed research results have shown that the RSF/CNT film has a wide range of potential application prospects in the wearable electronics field.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Silk fibroin, recognized for its biocompatibility and modifiable properties, has significant potential in bioelectronics. Traditional silk bioelectronic devices, however, face rapid functional losses in aqueous or in vivo environments due to high water absorption of silk fibroin, which leads to expansion, structural damage, and conductive failure. In this study, we developed a novel approach by creating oriented crystallization (OC) silk fibroin through physical modification of the silk protein. This advancement enabled the fabrication of electronic interfaces for chronic biopotential recording. A pre-stretching treatment of the silk membrane allowed for tunable molecular orientation and crystallization, markedly enhancing its aqueous stability, biocompatibility, and electronic shielding capabilities. The OC devices demonstrated robust performance in sensitive detection and motion tracking of cutaneous electrical signals, long-term (over seven days) electromyographic signal acquisition in live mice with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR >20), and accurate detection of high-frequency oscillations (HFO) in epileptic models (200–500 Hz). This work not only improves the structural and functional integrity of silk fibroin but also extends its application in durable bioelectronics and interfaces suited for long-term physiological environments.

Abstract:Protein materials gain new functions and applicability through redesigns in protein structure and engineering confer. However, the application and development of proteins for use in flexible devices that fit in flexible devices that fit the surface of human skin is hindered by their poor wet stability. Here, we described the design of wet-stable materials based on the reconstruction of silk fibroin (SF). The combination of polyamide-amine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) was used as a traction rope to bring SF molecular chains closer to each other, to facilitate the self-assembly of SF through branching and lengthening of molecular chains, and change its crystalline structure. SF/PAE composite films that exhibited huge improvement in ductility and wet stability were combined with flexible SF substrates via patterning and ion sputtering to prepare flexible sensors. In addition, the SF/PAE sensing system equipped with a microprocessor and Bluetooth module enabled the real-time remote acquisition of human health signals such as vocal cords, joints, pulse and meridians. This reconfiguration of the SF structure will advance the systematic exploration of protein structures and the development of protein materials for intelligent device applications.
Fabrication of Air-Stable and Conductive Silk Fibroin Gels.

Abstract:Owing to their promising applications in flexible electronics, researchers have extensively explored flexible and conductive gels. However, these gels have unsatisfactory strength and flexibility as well as easily dry in air. Herein, a rationally designed robust regenerated silk fibroin (RSF)-based gel with significant flexibility and strength, favorable conductivity, and excellent air stability is fabricated by inducing the conformation transition of RSF from random coil to β-sheet in ionic liquid (IL)/water mixtures. We found that such RSF-based gels have a unique homogeneous network structure of RSF nanofibers, which is likely formed because of evenly distributed cross-links dominated by small-sized β-sheet domains created during the conformation transition of RSF. Although the unique homogeneous nanostructure/network contributes toward improving the mechanical properties of these gels, it also provides pathways for ionic transport to help the gels preserve high conductivity of ILs. The prepared RSF-based gels display a remarkable air stability and reversible loss/absorption water capability in a wide humidity range environment primarily because of the distinguished combination of the IL and water. Therefore, the novel RSF-based gels hold a great potential in various applications as multifunctional, flexible, conductive materials, which are dispensed with encapsulation.

Abstract:Attributed to advanced structural characterization techniques, mesoscopic hierarchical structures as well as crystal network structures have been verified in both natural and artificial soft materials including silk fibroin materials. Notably, the close correlation between mesoscopic structures (especially the structure of crystallite and crystal network) and macroscopic properties suggests that the functionalization of SF materials could start from the mesoscopic structure reconstruction in a designed manner. This review gives an overview of recent SF materials with novel and enhanced properties which are achieved by meso doping as well as meso hybridization via directing the nucleation pathways and changing nucleation kinetics. Besides, the kinetic meso reconstruction factor λ is also put forward and emphasized to quantitatively describe the templating effects of specific templating seeds, irrespective of macromolecules or nano functional seeds. The as-acquired functionalized SF materials can be further applied to fabricate bio-compatible and degradable flexible/implantable meso electronic devices (e.g., E-skins and memristors), and applicable to on-skin long-term monitoring of human physiological conditions, in-body sensing, information processing and storage.

Abstract:Silk and silk fibroin, the biomaterial from nature, nowadays are being widely utilized in many cutting-edge micro/nanodevices/systems via advanced micro/nanofabrication techniques. Herein, for the first time to our knowledge, we report aqueous multiphoton lithography of diversiform-regenerated-silk-fibroin-centric inks using noncontact and maskless femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW). Initially, silk fibroin was FsLDW-crosslinked into arbitrary two/three-dimensional micro/nanostructures with good elastic properties merely using proper photosensitizers. More interestingly, silk/metal composite micro/nanodevices with multidimension-controllable metal content can be FsLDW-customized through laser-induced simultaneous fibroin oxidation/crosslinking and metal photoreduction using the simplest silk/Ag + or silk/[AuCl 4 ] − aqueous resists. Noticeably, during FsLDW, fibroin functions as biological reductant and matrix, while metal ions act as the oxidant. A FsLDW-fabricated prototyping silk/Ag microelectrode exhibited 10 4 -Ω −1 m −1 -scale adjustable electric conductivity. This work not only provides a powerful development to silk micro/nanoprocessing techniques but also creates a novel way to fabricate multifunctional metal/biomacromolecule complex micro/nanodevices for applications such as micro/nanoscale mechanical and electrical bioengineering and biosystems.
