Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) are a promising technology for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Besides obtaining satisfactory efficiencies and aesthetic appeal, a simple and low-cost fabrication process is required to deploy large-scale LSCs. Herein, we introduced a facile and cost-effective fabrication method to obtain laminated LSC (L-LSC) devices. By optimizing the fabrication parameters, L-LSC based on polymer substrates exhibited higher efficiency (power conversion efficiency, PCE=0.24%, external photon efficiency, ηext=4.14% and optical efficiency, ηopt=3.46%) compared to glass-based L-LSC (PCE=0.09%, ηext=1.59%, ηopt=1.76%) due to their excellent optical properties and good compatibility with the laminated emissive layer. Using the optimized L-LSC device, a color-tunable multilayered L-LSC structure is then proposed. By embedding different QDs into two interlayers, the color appearance of the device can be tuned, simultaneously improving the overall efficiency. This study presents a notable advancement towards a practical application of L-LSCs with a satisfactory efficiency and color aesthetics for sustainable BIPVs.

Abstract:Abstract Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are light‐management devices able to harvest and downshift sunlight, making it available to edge‐coupled photovoltaic cells for light‐to‐electricity conversion. When operating in real‐life outdoor scenarios, LSCs can be exposed to humid/freezing environments which may yield fogging and frosting, ultimately resulting in detrimental performance decay owing to reduced photon absorption and photon trapping efficiency within the waveguide. To address this issue, the first demonstration of an antifogging/frost‐resisting highly efficient thin‐film LSC is presented in this work, based on a tailored semi‐interpenetrating polymer network serving as the host matrix material, where the antifogging behavior is imparted by the simultaneous presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments in the macromolecular structure, whereas the fluorescent response is achieved via the incorporation of a coumarin‐functionalized methacrylic monomer. By judicious selection and compositional tuning of an additional luminescent guest dopant with excellent spectral match with the fluorescent host matrix, highly efficient (≈98%) energy transfer is achieved. Optimized LSC devices exhibit external and internal photon efficiencies as high as 3.96% and 34.79%, respectively. In addition, persistent and reproducible antifogging/frost‐resisting functionality is demonstrated during aggressive aging tests under UV‐light, with preserved fluorescence emission and prolonged and sustained device efficiency.

Solar light selective-harvesting eco-friendly colloidal quantum dots for transparent luminescent solar concentrators

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) constructed using colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a promising and cost-effective solution for transparent photovoltaics. However, the efficiency of these LSCs in converting sunlight to electricity often remains low due to limited quantum efficiency and significant reabsorption losses associated with the QDs. Furthermore, the majority of high-efficiency LSCs incorporate QDs containing heavy metals, curtailing their potential for widespread commercialization. Here, we have developed white-emitting CuGaS2/ZnS and its optical characteristics are adeptly tailored through manipulation of the ZnS shell. The optimal configuration of CuGaS2/ZnS demonstrates an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 80% and an extensive Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm. These QDs are integrated in a polymer matrix to produce LSCs with dimensions of 5 x 5 x 0.2 cm3. Under standard illumination conditions of one sun AM 1.5G (100 mW cm-2), these LSCs exhibit an optical efficiency of 1.7%, average visible transmittance of similar to 75% and color rendering index of 91.6. To improve the solar light harvesting, we constructed a tandem LSC, with CuGaS2/ZnS QD-LSC as the top layer and near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS QD-LSC was developed as the bottom layer. The optical efficiency could reach 4.4%, which underscores the potential of these environmentally friendly core/shell QDs for cost-effective transparent solar conversion applications. CuGaS2/ZnS quantum dots with a Stokes shift of similar to 190 nm and PLQY of 80% were developed for LSCs, which achieved an optical efficiency of 1.7%. A tandem configuration integrating near-infrared-active AgInS2/ZnS achieved an optical efficiency of 4.4%.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have the potential to serve as energy-harvesting windows in buildings. Although recent advances in nanotechnology have led to the emergence of novel fluorophores such as quantum dots, perovskites and others, the commercialization of such functional glass remains immature due to an insufficient power conversion efficiency. In other words, improvements in fluorophores alone cannot fully maximize the potential of LSCs. Here we introduce a new laminated type of LSC structure where a patterned low-refractive-index medium acts as an optical 'guard rail', providing a practically non-decaying path for guiding photons. We also propose the design rules regarding the dimensions of LSCs and the spectral characteristics of fluorophores. Once these rules were applied, we achieved record-high LSC performance. The measured external quantum efficiencies at 450 nm are 45% for a 100 cm 2 area and 32% for the LSC with an edge aspect ratio of 71. The device efficiency is 7.6%, the highest value ever reported, to the best of our knowledge. These findings may have industrial implications and could accelerate the commercialization of LSCs.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) devices have become prevalent, embedding intelligence into our environment. It is projected that over 75 billion IoT devices will be connected by 2025 worldwide, with the majority being operated indoors. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) have recently been optimized for ambient light, having the capabilities of providing sufficient energy for self-powered IoT devices. Interaction with digital technologies, termed Human Computer Interaction (HCI), is often achieved via physical mechanisms (e.g. remote controls, cell phones) which can hinder the natural interface between users and IoT devices, a key consideration for HCI. What if the solar cell that is powering the IoT device can also recognize hand gestures which would allow the user to naturally interact with the system? Previous attempts to achieve this have necessarily employed an array of solar cell/photodiodes to detect directionality. In this work, we demonstrate that by monitoring the photocurrent output of an asymmetrically patterned monolithic (i.e., single cell) DSSC, and using machine learning, we can recognize simple hand gestures, achieving an accuracy prediction of 97.71%. This work shows that, DSSCs are the perfect choice for self-powered interactive technologies, both in terms of powering IoT devices in ambient light conditions and having aesthetic qualities that are prioritized by users. As well as powering interactive technologies, they can also provide a means of interactive control.

Abstract:During the last years the development of integrated devices made of a sensor and an energy storage element has found many applications in terms of wearable, implantable and integrated electronics. 1,2 The limitation of this system is the periodical need to recharge the energy storage element, making it less suitable for long time remote measurements. Herein, we propose a self-powered and flexible system made by an energy harvester, an energy storage element, and a 3D printed stress sensor. (See figure 1) The harvesting of energy is taken over by a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The DSSC have made their way on the market thanks to the simple fabrication, low payback time and the possibility to customize the choice of electrodes and electrolyte. 3 The cell counter electrode is made by laser induced graphene (LIG) , gaining the advantage of flexibility with respect to the more common FTO-based counter electrode, as well as more cheapness and ease of fabrication. The solar cell supplies a micro supercapacitor , which is also made by laser induced graphene. LIG supercapacitors are particularly suitable for this application thanks to one-step fabrication (laser writing), flexibility, low costs, high porosity, and lightweight. 4,5 The electrodes design has been optimized to obtain a charge balancing and exploiting the whole potential window using a gel-based electrolyte . The supercapacitor is also connected to a hydrogel based flexible sensor . The energy storage discharge current is measured at the ends of the sensor. When the hydrogel is stretched or compressed the resistance of the path is changed, causing a variation of the current that can be measured to retrieve the variation of the stress intensity. Abstract:The passivity and stretchability of sensors are the focus of current electronic research, and the main reason for limiting their development is that sensors always require external power supplies and lack enough stretchability. In response to this problem, the development of self-powered sensors is a good solution. In this paper, a self-powered vertical stretchable environment-friendly light intensity sensor has been realized by combining the electrolyte-based thermogalvanic gel and organic carbon sponge that is prepared by making the mixture of carbon nanotubes and polydimethylsiloxane porous. The upper photothermal layer can absorb light effectively and converts it into heat that trigger the lower thermogalvanic layer to send thermovoltage signals. Via the subtle photo-thermal-electric conversion, we can achieve the active monitoring for light intensity due to a strong correlation between output voltages and the light intensity. Further, we have designed a light intensity monitoring platform, through which the user terminal can receive the light intensity information in real time. The passive light intensity sensor may possess potential applications in artificial breeding, artificial planting, energy saving and emission reduction.

Abstract:This paper aims to demonstrate the viability of energy harvesting for wide area wireless sensing systems based on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) under diffuse sunlight conditions, proving the feasibility of deploying autonomous sensor nodes even under unfavorable outdoor scenarios, such as during cloudy days, in the proximity of tall buildings, among the trees in a forest and during winter days in general. A flexible thin-film module and a glass thin-film module, both featuring an area smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, were initially characterized in diffuse solar light. Afterward, the protype sensor nodes were tested in a laboratory in two different working conditions, emulating outdoor sunlight in unfavorable lighting and weather to reconstruct a worst-case scenario. A Li-Po battery was employed as a power reserve for a long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN)-based sensor node that transmitted data every 8 h and every hour. To this end, an RFM95x LoRa module was used, while the node energy management was attained by exploiting a nano-power boost charger buck converter integrated circuit conceived for the nano-power harvesting from the light source and the managing of the battery charge and protection. A positive charge balance was demonstrated by monitoring the battery trend along two series of 6 and 9 days, thus allowing us to affirm that the system’s permanent energy self-sufficiency was guaranteed even in the worst-case lighting and weather scenario.

Abstract:Flexible organic solar cells (OSCs) are very promising for use in portable power supply devices due to the advantages of low‐cost, light‐weight, and flexibility. However, the efficiencies of flexible OSCs are limited by the flexible transparent electrodes owing to their nonoptimal electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. To address these challenges, leaf‐like biomimetic electrodes are proposed to achieve an efficient light capture and glossy surface for a high‐efficiency flexible OSC. To mimic the internal anatomy of the leaf, the conformable electrode stack consists of a flexible polyimide substrate, light‐scattering polystyrene spheres, zinc oxide protecting layer, and electrically conductive silver nanowires to obtain a high transmittance, low sheet resistance, and low surface roughness. A record‐high power conversion efficiency of 16.1% is realized by a flexible OSC with the biomimetic electrode design, comparable to those rigid devices on glass. Moreover, the flexible OSC on this biomimetic electrode exhibits a robust bendability against flexural strain, retaining 85% of the initial efficiency after 5000 bending cycles at a radius of curvature as small as 1.0 mm.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are devices that concentrate light using a transparent matrix doped with chromophores. LSCs have the potential to outperform other concentration technologies due to their ability to concentrate diffuse light and reshape the solar spectrum to match the optimum spectral characteristics for photovoltaics. This study compares different LSC technologies, including solar windows, within a simulated real-world environment and outlines the impact of upcoming technologies to determine their commercialization potential. We utilized a year of real-world solar spectrum data from Boulder and Amsterdam and define the power efficiencies from different LSC configurations. We find that silicon PV generally outperforms even the best LSC over a calendar year. We outline the potential opportunities in the application of LSC systems relative to traditional photovoltaics.

Abstract:Transparent electronics offer exciting light harvesting solutions for generation of electrical power via demonstration of "see-through" optoelectronic devices. The wireless energy harvesting ability can empower unplugged and battery-free operations for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In this study, we report a transparent, luminescent, and elastomeric optical waveguide incorporating quantum dots that is in-situ coupled with organic solar cell array made of P3HT:PC61BM bulk heterojunction. CdSe@ZnS QDs have a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 91% and are synthetically engineered to match their photoluminescence spectra with the photo-response of P3HT:PC61BM solar cells for efficient energy harvesting. Integrated devices can generate sufficient power for the active radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to send signals in the communication distance of 35 meters at low illumination level of 0.1-sun and ~0.1 km under 1-sun condition, respectively, which is sufficient for indoor and outdoor communications. Advantageously, the combination of organic solar cells with the waveguide during the elastomer curing leads to the elimination of the undesired post-fabrication processes such as alignment of the solar cells with waveguide and gluing the separate parts with curable polymers. This study paves the way toward using luminescence as transparent, efficient, and configurable energy harvesting solutions for IoT applications.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are spectral conversion devices offering interesting opportunities for integration of photovoltaics into the built environment and portable systems. The Förster‐resonance energy transfer (FRET) process can boost the optical response of LSCs by reducing energy losses typically associated to non‐radiative processes occurring within the device under operation. In this work, a new class of FRET‐based thin‐film LSC devices is presented, in which the synthetic versatility of linear polyurethanes (PU) is exploited to control the photophysical properties and the device performance of the resulting LSCs. A series of luminescent linear PUs are synthesized in the presence of two novel bis‐hydroxyl‐functionalized luminophores of suitable optical properties, used as chain extenders during the step‐growth polyaddition reaction for the formation of the linear macromolecular network. By synthetically tuning their composition, the obtained luminescent PUs can achieve a high energy transfer efficiency (∼90%) between the covalently linked luminophores. The corresponding LSC devices exhibit excellent photonic response, with external and internal photon efficiencies as high as ∼4% and ∼37%, respectively. Furthermore, their optimized power conversion efficiency combined with their enhanced average visible‐light transmittance highlight their suitability for potential use as transparent solar energy devices. Abstract:An autonomous multisensor system powered by an energy harvester fabricated with a flat-panel solar thermoelectric generator with an ultralow-power management circuit is presented. The multisensor system was tested in an agricultural application, where every 15 min the values of the temperature, air humidity, and solar radiation have to be measured and stored in a mass memory device (a Secure Digital card), with their respective time stamp. The energy-harvesting switching dc-dc converter is based on a low-input-voltage commercial integrated circuit (LTC3108), which charges a 1.65-F supercapacitor up to 5.0 V. A novel ultralow-power management circuit was developed to replace the internal power management circuitry of the LTC3108, and using this circuit, the operation of the system when no energy can be harvested from the environment is extended from 136 h to more than 266 h. The solar thermoelectric generator used for the energy harvesting is composed of a bismuth telluride thermoelectric generator with a 110-mV/°C Seebeck coefficient sandwiched between a 40 cm $\times $ 40 cm anodized aluminum flat panel and an aluminum heatsink. On a sunny winter day in the southern hemisphere (12 August 2014, at Campinas, SP—Brazil, Latitude: 22° 54’), the energy supplied by the harvesting system to the supercapacitor was 7 J.

Abstract:Power supply equipment, employed in the Internet of Things (IoT) for instance, calls for efficient harvesting of solar energy from the environment sustainably. Sb2Se3 enjoys the advantages of unique one-dimensional crystal structure and low-temperature film growth, enabling the fabrication of flexible and lightweight solar cells. Therefore, Sb2Se3 solar cells are expected to have intrinsic advantages in powering IoT sensors. Herein, the device configuration and film fabrication of flexible Sb2Se3 solar cell was optimized and an efficiency up to 6.13% and power-per-weight of 2.04 W g-1 were obtained, both of which are the highest records for flexible Sb2Se3 solar cells. Benefitting from the intrinsically high flexibility of Sb2Se3 and the thin flexible substrate, our device retained 96% of its initial performance after 1000-times bending at the extremely small curvature radius of 0.5 mm. Furthermore, the first Sb2Se3 mini-module (25 cm2 area) was constructed and its application in powering a blue LED under all weather conditions and a flower monitor (IoT sensors) was demonstrated. This work opens an avenue toward flexible Sb2Se3 solar cells and points out its future research direction.

Abstract:Sensor nodes are critical components of the Internet of Things (IoT). Traditional IoT sensor nodes are typically powered by disposable batteries, making it difficult to meet the requirements for long lifetime, miniaturization, and zero maintenance. Hybrid energy systems that integrate energy harvesting, storage, and management are expected to provide a new power source for IoT sensor nodes. This research describes an integrated cube-shaped photovoltaic (PV) and thermal hybrid energy-harvesting system that can be utilized to power IoT sensor nodes with active RFID tags. The indoor light energy was harvested using 5-sided PV cells, which could generate 3 times more energy than most current studies using single-sided PV cells. In addition, two vertically stacked thermoelectrical generators (TEG) with a heat sink were utilized to harvest thermal energy. Compared to one TEG, the harvested power was improved by more than 219.48%. In addition, an energy management module with a semi-active configuration was designed to manage the energy stored by the Li-ion battery and supercapacitor (SC). Finally, the system was integrated into a 44 mm × 44 mm × 40 mm cube. The experimental results showed that the system was able to generate a power output of 192.48 μW using indoor ambient light and the heat from a computer adapter. Furthermore, the system was capable of providing stable and continuous power for an IoT sensor node used for monitoring indoor temperature over a prolonged period.

Abstract:Traditional concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems utilize multijunction cells to minimize thermalization losses, but cannot efficiently capture diffuse sunlight, which contributes to a high levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and limits their use to geographical regions with high direct sunlight insolation. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) harness light generated by luminophores embedded in a light-trapping waveguide to concentrate light onto smaller cells. LSCs can absorb both direct and diffuse sunlight, and thus can operate as flat plate receivers at a fixed tilt and with a conventional module form factor. However, current LSCs experience significant power loss through parasitic luminophore absorption and incomplete light trapping by the optical waveguide. Here we introduce a tandem LSC device architecture that overcomes both of these limitations, consisting of a PLMA polymer layer with embedded CdSe/CdS quantum dot (QD) luminophores and InGaP micro-cells, which serve as a high bandgap absorber on top of a conventional Si photovoltaic. We experimentally synthesize CdSe/CdS QDs with exceptionally high quantum-yield (99%) and ultra-narrowband emission optimally matched to fabricated III-V InGaP micro-cells. Using a Monte Carlo ray-tracing model, we show the radiative limit power conversion efficiency for a module with these components to be 30.8% diffuse sunlight conditions. These results indicate that a tandem LSC-on-Si architecture could significantly improve upon the efficiency of a conventional Si photovoltaic module with simple and straightforward alterations of the module lamination steps of a Si photovoltaic manufacturing process, with promise for widespread module deployment across diverse geographical regions and energy markets.

Abstract:Reabsorption loss is suppressed based on advanced structural LSCs with universally applicable optical spacer layer. Then DEG‐LSCs with droplet‐based electricity generator are proposed, which not only realize synergistic harvesting of solar and raindrop energy, but also possess self‐cleaning property. Finally, a self‐powered temperature/humidity sensing system is demonstrated based on DEG‐LSCs. As large‐area and optically transparent photon harvesting devices, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are promising candidates for building‐integrated photovoltaics owing to their high transmittance and resistance to shadowing effects existing in solar cells. Up to now, there are still many challenges in the practical application of LSCs: 1) Reabsorption loss is inevitable during photoluminescence transmission due to indirect illumination of solar cells in LSC system. 2) Satisfactory energy harvesting cannot be achieved in rainy conditions due to the substantial attenuation of the incident light intensity. 3) Evaporation residue on the surface of LSCs leads to device performance degradation. Pioneering researches and feasible strategies for reabsorption loss suppression, energy harvesting in rainy days as well as self‐cleaning property are still lacking demonstration. In this work, reabsorption loss is suppressed based on advanced structural LSCs with universally applicable optical spacer layer. Then the integrated LSCs with droplet‐based electricity generator (DEG) are proposed for the first time. Such DEG‐LSCs not only realize synergistic harvesting of solar and raindrop energy, but also possess self‐cleaning properties. Finally, a self‐powered temperature and humidity sensing system is designed and demonstrated to provide feasible ideas for the practical application of DEG‐LSCs in self‐powered intelligent buildings.

Abstract:Multifunctional integrated devices represent the development direction of future wearable smart electronics. Increased efforts have recently been devoted to developing fiber-shaped integrated devices due to their excellent flexibility and wearability. Fiber-shaped integrated devices combining energy harvest-storage and storage-utilization have been developed. However, the design and development of a single fiber capable of energy harvest, storage, and utilization, although highly desirable, remains greatly challenging. Herein, we successfully assembled a fully solar-powered coaxial-fiber stretchable sensing system by integrating solar cells, a Zn-MnO2 battery, and a stretchable strain sensor to simultaneously realize energy harvest, storage, and utilization. Specifically, the harvested solar energy can be effectively converted into electricity by the solar cells and further stored as chemical energy in the stretchable Zn-MnO2 battery. More importantly, the solar-charged stretchable Zn-MnO2 battery provides a steady and continuous power supply for the stretchable fibrous strain sensor. Thus, this work provides proof-of-concept design for next-generation multifunctional integrated devices.
