Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a terahertz (THz) photonic wireless transmission system in the 310 GHz band with four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals. A zero-bias diode is used as a simple direct detection receiver, which is cost-effective compared to a conventional coherent receiver. Moreover, we comprehensively investigate the system performance by applying linear and nonlinear equalization schemes. The experimental results show that Volterra nonlinear filtering can significantly improve the system capacity by around 90%, and transmissions of up to 60 Gbit/s PAM-4 signals over a 3 m wireless link are successfully achieved. The advantageous features of this make it promising for high-speed THz wireless communications.

Abstract:Data center interconnections are cost-sensitive. We propose and demonstrate a cost-effective C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmitter for extended range (ER) inter-datacenter interconnects utilizing only a 2-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC). Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) is used in transmitter DSP to compensate for dispersion-induced impairments. Due to the uniform distribution of signal levels after THP encoding, a high-resolution DAC is required to generate electrical signals. The hardware cost of the transmitter can be significantly reduced by compressing the physical number of bits (PNOB) of the DAC to 2 bits. We quantize the signal to 4 levels and utilize up-sampling and noise shaping to greatly reduce the in-band quantization noise. The in-band signal to noise ratio (SNR) can be increased to 23 dB. We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 40-Gbaud probabilistic shaping PAM-4 C-band IM/DD transmission over 50-km utilizing only a 2-bit DAC in the transmitter without any optical dispersion compensation. The performance of the proposed scheme is proximate to the common case of using an 8-bit DAC. It has a BER gap of about 2 × 10−3 only when the received optical power (ROP) is higher than −6 dBm.

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist(FTN) is a promising technique due to higher spectral efficiency, but at a cost of introducing the inter-symbol interference (ISI) which usually requires the computationally demanding detection algorithms. In order to reduce the detection complexity at the receiver, in this paper, a novel Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) scheme is proposed for FTN system. In the conventional THP (CTHP) scheme, the ISI introduced by time-packing can only be diminished from several preceding information symbols, which results in large residual ISI and an unattractive bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Moreover, due to the suboptimal receiver – a simple modulo operation which ignores the correlation between received symbols, CTHP faces obvious capacity loss and is ineffective to execute interference cancellation for FTNS. In this paper, residual ISI of FTNS in CTHP is formulated in detail and modeled mathematically. Further more, an improved THP method with an optimized receiver based on the soft interference cancelation (SIC) algorithm and iterative turbo process is proposed to combat residual ISI for FTNS. Computational complexity analysis and numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme not only has inexpensive computational cost but also greatly outperforms CTHP and other cited schemes. Moreover, for moderate time-packing, it can approach the ISI-free BER performance boundary and is also competitive to the MAP equalization technique.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Underwater visible light communication (UVLC) based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is considered a potential candidate for underwater wireless data transmission. However, the implementation of high-speed UVLC remains a challenge due to bandwidth limitation and nonlinear effects. In this paper, we investigate the performance of Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) in the bandwidth-limited UVLC system for the first time. Apart from research on linear and Volterra series-based nonlinear THP, neural network (NN)-based THP is first proposed and conducted. At the transmitter, the intersymbol interference (ISI) and nonlinearity can be partially mitigated through a feedback neural network (FBN) without error propagation. A modulo operator is employed to eliminate instability. In addition, for the precoded signals, the power spectral density (PSD) is near-white. Therefore, it is possible to avoid the spectrum-shaping-induced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) loss problem that is common in pre-emphasis methods. At the receiver, another modulo operator is used for decoding. An adaptive feedforward neural network (FFN) is applied to compensate for the channel state information (CSI) mismatch of the FBN and mitigate the remaining ISI and nonlinear impairments. In the demonstrated UVLC system, the experimental results prove the feasibility of the proposed method. The Q factor is increased by 3.39 dB at a data rate of 2.2 Gbps. 630 MBd CAP-16 transmission under a 7% HD-FEC threshold is realized, which is 90 MBd higher than that when employing linear postequalization only.
Nonlinear Trellis-Coded Precoding for MISO Visible Light Communication System

Abstract:Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) is a promising application for visible light communication (VLC) system, which is featured in large user capacity, but also suffers from the nonlinearity problem introduced by the light emitting diode (LED) itself and the signal superposition at the receiver. In this article, to suppress the negative effect of nonlinearity in MISO VLC system that utilizes superposition modulation, we proposed a solution that applies Nonlinear Trellis-Coded Precoding (NL-TCP) to shape the spectrum and constellation diagram of the original PAM-4. A PAM-6 signal converted from PAM-4 by NL-TCP algorithm successfully lowers its BER under the threshold for 7% FEC and supports up to 1.1 Gb/s data rate within severe nonlinearity, while the conventional PAM-4 modulation fails to meet the threshold requirement. The maximum improvement in Q-factor recorded is 1.2dB at the data rate of 1 Gb/s. In comparison, NL-TCP is more sensitive to the data rate, but it has a more desirable robustness against the nonlinearity in the channel. This experiment verifies the practical benefit of NL-TCP in high nonlinearity channel. It is believed that this research is significative for the researchers who are aimed at establishing a usable link, yet have to tolerate the nonlinearity to exist in the channel.

Abstract:High-speed optical transmission systems suffer from severe intersymbol-interference (ISI) caused by limited bandwidth. To address this challenge, previous studies on bandwidth limited signals have explored the use of a post filter after full-response equalization to whiten colored noise and enhance system performance. However, the post filter requires additional training or scanning processes to the appropriate coefficient values, which introduces additional overhead and time consumption. A low-complexity duobinary neural network equalization (DB-NNE) has been investigated recently, which is trained with the target of the duobinary version of the original symbol. Although this approach achieves both channel equalization and noise suppression, it may not achieve the optimal coefficient value for noise suppression. In this research, we propose an adaptive partial-response neural network equalization (APR-NNE) for bandwidth-limited signal processing and nonlinearity mitigation. Our approach seamlessly integrates channel equalization and noise suppression, achieving an optimal balance between these two functions. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate the transmission of beyond-150-GBaud PAM-4 signals in a system with -10-dB bandwidth of 57 GHz. The experimental results show that the APR-NNE can compensate the bandwidth-limitation induced ISI effectively, enabling the achievement of the 7% HD-FEC threshold for 155-GBaud PAM-4 signals over a 0.5-km SSMF in C-band.

Abstract:We present a simulation study of multipath-interference (MPI) mitigation in optical fiber utilizing the proposed high-pass feed-forward equalization (HPFFE) and high-pass 1-dimension convolutional neural network (HPNN) method for 56G Baud/s PAM-4. Compared with regular algorithm, the Q-factor performance using the proposed HPFFE and HPNN algorithms has been increased by up to 2.47 dB, achieving superior performance while HPFFE has lower calculation complexity. The MPI tolerance has been increased by 4 dB.

Abstract:With the requirement for large capacity communication systems, the technology to close the gap between the achievable information rate and the Shannon capacity limit attracts more and more attention. In this paper, we present a novel scheme of trellis coded modulation combined with probabilistic shaping (PS-TCM) in the intensity-modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) system, using generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM). The principle of PS-TCM is analyzed with mutual information. We experimentally demonstrate the proposed scheme in the optical GFDM system. The results show that 4 Gb/s PS-TCM-32QAM signal achieves ∼2dB gain over the regular 16QAM signal in the back to back case. After 20 km transmission, the scheme of PS-TCM-32QAM provides 1.8 dB performance gain over that of the regular 16QAM signal. The bandwidth effect of optical filter on the performance of PS-TCM-32QAM signal is analyzed. The proposed scheme has significant gain, flexible spectrum efficiency, and approached Shannon limit, which brings a better trade-off between effectiveness and reliability performance for the multi-carrier optical system.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the intensity modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) 112-Gb/s single carrier pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)-4 transmission system over 80-km standard signal-mode fiber (SSMF) without any optical chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation at the 3.8×10−3 BER threshold for 7% the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC). The training based pre-equalization (pre-EQ) and the nonlinear look-up-table (LUT) based pre-distortion (pre-DT) in the transmitter (Tx)-side are employed to reduce the computation complexity and deal with the modulation bandwidth and the nonlinearity impairments of electro-optical modulators and detectors. On the other hand, the system without optical CD compensation modules is obviously more simple and flexible. Therefore, the nonlinear LUT pre-DT simultaneously used for CD compensation will further simplify the system. The BER is about 20% without any digital signal processing (DSP) such as equalization, pre-distortion, pre-equalization or compensation. After signal recovery, the BERs of BTB and 80-km SSMF system can achieve 3.07×10−5 and 1.50×10−3 respectively. The principle of the LUT based pre-DT and the pre-EQ are introduced in the paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate 10 GBaud intensity modulation direct detection pulse amplitude modulation 4 transmission over 48-km single mode fiber (SMF). Look-up table predistortion and chromatic dispersion precompensation are employed to mitigate channel bandwidth constraint and nonlinear impairment. At the receiver side, decision-directed least mean square and cascaded multimodule algorithm are employed to improve the decision precision. By combining these techniques, link budgets of 5.3 and 4 dB are achieved at bit error rate of 1 × 10−3 for the back-to-back case and after transmission over 48-km SMF, respectively.

Abstract:The integration of photonic terahertz (THz) wireless and optical fiber links combines the advantages of ultra-long distance, low-loss, and high-capacity transmission of fiber link with the advantages of flexible, seamless transmission of THz wireless link. Compared with single-carrier (SC) modulation, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation technology has higher spectral efficiency and exhibits robustness against dispersion in optical fiber transmission, effectively alleviating multi-path effects in wireless communication. In the study, we experimentally demonstrated an OFDM fiber-THz-fiber seamless communication system. Utilizing dual-polarization (DP) technology to double the system capacity. Probabilistic shaping (PS) technology is used to adapt transmission rate and improve system capacity under a limited SNR. Finally, we propose a 2 x 2 multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) hybrid time-frequency polarization domain (TFPD) Volterra nonlinear equalization (VNLE) algorithm, aiming to simultaneously address both linear and nonlinear impairments in the time-domain, frequency-domain, and polarization-domain. The 50-GBaud PS-64QAM DP-OFDM signals are successfully delivered over two spans of 20-km SSMF and 3-m wireless distance at 320 GHz, achieving a net rate of 400 Gbit/s thanks to the MIMO TFPD-VNLE.

Abstract:High-speed optical transmission systems suffer from severe inter-symbol interferences (ISIs) and nonlinear distortions due to the limited bandwidth and the nonlinear response of optical and electrical components at the transceivers. Previous work has shown the benefits of applying maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) to deal with the ISI and using the neural network-based equalizer (NNE) to mitigate strong nonlinearities. However, most of the NNE has a quasi-hard output as the training and validation loss continue to drop to an over-equalized state in which the quasi-hard output sequence loses the symbol-wise soft information of the signal and fails to obtain the BER performance gain from MLSE. In this work, we investigate the cascaded NNE and MLSE equalization scheme to deal with linear and nonlinear impairments. To solve the over-equalized problem, we propose a modified loss function (MLF) assisting NNE to achieve soft-out without entering into the over-equalized state. With the soft output after NNE, joint linear and nonlinear equalization can be realized by cascading the NNE with MLSE. Both numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations confirm the improved performance of our proposed method. With joint linear and nonlinear equalization, improved back-to-back (BtB) and fiber transmission performances of the 220-Gbps PAM-4 signal are demonstrated.

Abstract:The precoding technique has been widely studied in multi-carrier modulation systems such as discrete multi-tone (DMT), due to its ability to equalize subcarrier signal-to-noise (SNR) and reduce signal peak-to-average power ratio. In this work, we implement a low-complexity real-time 30-GSa/s DMT transceiver on a single field programmable gate array chip, enabled by simplified fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms and timing synchronization, block precoding (BP) and partial pre-emphasis (PPE) techniques. Four software-selectable BP techniques, i.e., the traditional concatenated BP (CBP) and the interleaved BP (IBP) based on FFT or fast Walsh–Hadamard transform (FWHT), and complete pre-emphasis (CPE) or PPE schemes are implemented in the transceiver. FWHT-CBP/IBP saves 60% on-chip registers and 67% look-up tables and 100% multipliers compared to FFT-CBP/IBP. Besides, more than 35% multipliers for the transceiver are reduced with the simplified FFTs in comparison with Spiral FFTs. The real-time transceiver is investigated in a short-reach intensity modulation and direct detection transmission system. The results exhibit that IBP can afford better SNR equalization and outperform CBP ones, and FWHT-IBP has a similar bit error rate (BER) performance to FFT-IBP. With the help of FWHT-IBP and PPE, the real-time 40-Gbit/s 16-QAM-DMT signals are successfully transmitted over 20-km standard single-mode fiber link with the BER below 3.8e-3 during 5-hour continuous measurements.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a large-capacity and long-haul photonics-aided dual-polarization (DP) terahertz wireless transmission system at 300 GHz. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme is employed to resist dispersion effects in the fiber link and multipath effects in the wireless link. To extend wireless transmission distance, we deploy high-gain dielectric plano-convex lenses, conical antennas (CAs), low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) as well as integrated mixer/amplifier/multiplier chain (IMAMC). We propose and utilize a low-complexity multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) hybrid time-frequency-polarization domain (TFPD) trigonometric-memory-polynomial (TMP) nonlinear equalizer (NLE), which is utilized to simultaneously eliminate in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, inter-symbol interference (ISI), inter-carrier interference (ICI), polarization crosstalk and nonlinear impairments for DP-OFDM signals. Compared to the traditional MIMO Volterra-NLE, the MIMO-TFPD-TMP-NLE reduces the required number of real multiplications by 37.7%. By utilizing advanced THz modules and DSP algorithms, we have successfully achieved a record-breaking air interface user rate (AIUR)-distance product of 50.6 Gbit/s·km (253 Gbit/s × 0.2 km) in the THz band (above 0.3 THz).
Inter-Channel Fiber Nonlinearity Mitigation in High Baud-Rate Optical Communication Systems

Abstract:Kerr nonlinearity in long distance fiber-optic link imposes a fundamental limitation to the capacity of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication systems. Solving the inverse-propagating nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is in principle a fundamental methodology to mitigate fiber nonlinear impairments. However, solving multi-channel coupled NLSE is too complexed to be implemented commercially. It is of great importance to compensate for nonlinear distortions in high baud-rate WDM systems based on the information of one single target channel. In this article, we experimentally study fiber nonlinearity mitigation in an 8 × 512 Gb/s (64Gbaud) polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) Nyquist-WDM system with 960 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) loop transmission. The digital back-propagation (DBP) algorithm based on the target channel is applied, which can compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity. The inter-channel nonlinearity of cross phase modulation (XPM) induces nonlinear polarization scattering and nonlinear phase noise, which are partially correlated over adjacent pulses in high baud-rate systems. We propose an advanced nonlinear polarization crosstalk canceller (NPCC) with a novel decision feedback (DF) update strategy that is called the DF-NPCC, which incorporates the iterative process of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm and can thus mitigate the correlated nonlinear polarization crosstalk and nonlinear phase noise. Through nonlinearity mitigation, the DBP together with the DF-NPCC can achieve a 0.77 dB Q 2 factor promotion. The DF-NPCC can suppress the remaining nonlinear distortions after the single channel DBP, which corresponds to a 0.36 dB Q 2 factor improvement due to inter-channel nonlinear mitigation. Our work indicates XPM distortions can be mitigated with low complexity digital signal processing such as the DF-NPCC based on the single channel information, which provides an attractive solution to compensate inter-channel fiber nonlinearity in high baud-rate Nyquist-WDM systems.
Adaptive Multi-band Modulation for Robust and Low-complexity Faster-than-Nyquist Non-Orthogonal FDM IM-DD System

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (FTN-NOFDM) is robust against the steep frequency roll-off by saving signal bandwidth. Among the FTN-NOFDM techniques, the non-orthogonal matrix precoding (NOM-p) based FTN has high compatibility with the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), in terms of the advanced digital signal processing already used in OFDM. In this work, by dividing the single band into multiple sub-bands in the NOM-p-based FTN-NOFDM system, we propose a novel FTN-NOFDM scheme with adaptive multi-band modulation. The proposed scheme assigns different quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) levels to different sub-bands, effectively utilizing the low-pass-like channel and reducing the complexity. The impacts of sub-band number and bandwidth compression factor on the bit-error-rate (BER) performance and implementation complexity are experimentally analyzed with a 32.23-Gb/s and 20-km intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) optical transmission system. Results show that the proposed scheme with proper sub-band numbers can lower BER and greatly reduce the complexity compared to the conventional single-band way.
