Abstract:Electrodialysis (ED) is a cost-effective membrane technology used is a variety of fields for desalination and concentration. This feasibility study explores the potential of ED as an NH4-N recovery technology from anaerobic digestate liquor (ADL), and the use of the concentrate as a nitrogen source in an industrial wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Three neighboring WWTPs were the focus of this study: Two municipal WWTPs A and B, operating anaerobic sludge stabilization, and a pulp & paper WWTP C, utilizing urea as a nitrogen source. Two-stage bench-scale experiments with the municipal ADL from WWTP A and WWTP B were conducted, and performance indicators were determined. A concentration of approximately 10 g NH4-N/L and 15 g NH4-N/L was obtained in stages 1 and 2, respectively. The NH4-N removal was above 85 % in all experiment, while recovery varied between 25 and 95 %. The specific energy consumption (SEC) was on average 12.9 kWh/kg NH4-N. Moreover, mass and energy balances in a model WWTP demonstrated that an ED side-stream treatment for NH4-N removal coupled with microfiltration (MF) pre-treatment results in a net energy gain, also without the added benefit of the ED concentrate as a nitrogen source.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers an efficient means for treating sludge generated in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), but nutrient-rich AD dewatering sidestream contributes as much as 30 % of the overall nutrient loading of WWTPs. Several electrochemical approaches are being developed as a sidestream treatment strategy to prevent return of nutrients to WWTP headworks and recover them for fertilizer production. One such method is to produce acids and bases, essential chemicals necessary to facilitate nutrient recovery, using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED). In this study we show simultaneous separation of nutrients and production of acid/base streams with an additional consideration for increasing the concentration of ammonium and phosphate in the final product stream by systematically altering compartment flow rates and hence the retention time of each stream. Using a three-compartment BMED system with a synthetic sidestream containing 50 mM NH 3 -N and 2 mM PO 4 -P, we achieved up to 80 % ammonia removal (via a cation exchange membrane) and up to 60 % phosphate removal (via an anion exchange membrane) at a productivity of 34.2 L m −2 h −1 . Separated ammonia was recovered (>90 %) in a subsequent membrane contactor (MC) that was fed with acid and base streams produced by the BMED unit. A phosphate recovery > 80 % was achieved by chemical precipitation (CP). In a combined BMED-MC-CP process, the concentrated final product contained 333.9 mM NH 3 -N and 3.1 mM PO 4 -P with an energy consumption of 8.9 kWh kg −1 N recovered. These results illustrate that the BMED-based treatment train is a promising strategy for nutrient recovery from AD dewatering sidestream.

Abstract:The fertilizer industry is experiencing tremendous stress due to its dependence on limited natural resources and high energy consumption, thus great attention has been paid for alternative nitrogen and phosphorus resources. This study employed electrodialysis (ED) with sacrificial magnesium anode to recover nitrogen and phosphorus (towards struvite formation) from primary municipal wastewater and examined the effects of various operating conditions on ED membranes' fouling behaviour. The results revealed that (1) lowering the concentrate to feed volume (C/F) ratio would reduce overall ED stack resistance, while at a C/F < 0.5, the magnesium corrosion rate decreased with an increase of pH in the concentrate stream; (2) the cation exchange membranes (CEM) adjacent to the feed chamber were more susceptible to foulant depositions (especially organics) than the anion exchange membrane (AEM); the total foulant density was linearly correlated with the increased electrical resistance; (3) increasing current density led to higher ion transport rate, however also promoted membrane fouling for the wastewater containing more solids; (4) the ammonium and phosphate mass transport rates were enhanced by increasing their concentrations in the feed instead of elevating current density. Higher concentrations of nutrient levels in the feed facilitated reduced scaling on membranes, possibly due to more formation of struvite. This study highlights the feasibility of simultaneously treating primary wastewater and recovering nutrients by combining gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration with ED.

Abstract:The sustainable development strategy shifts water treatment from pollution removal to resource recovery. Here, an electrochemical resource-recovery anaerobic membrane bioreactor (eRAnMBR) that employed a magnesium plate and conductive membrane as dual anodes is presented and shows excellent performance in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus recovery, as well as 95% membrane anti-fouling. The Mg2+ released alters the physicochemical properties of sludge, unblocking the cake layer, and recovers ammonium and phosphate, yielding 60.64% purity and 0.08 g d-1 struvite deposited onto cathode to be separated from sludge. The enhanced direct interspecies electron transfer, along with hydrogen evolution and alkalinity increase due to the electrochemical reactions, significantly increase methane yield and purity (93.97%) of the eRAnMBR. This increased internal energy can cover the additional electricity and electrode consumption. This integrated eRAnMBR reactor boasts the benefits of short process, low maintenance, and low carbon footprint, introducing a concept for the next generation of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The removal of ammonium and ammonia, represented as total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), from reject water through electro-dialysis (ED) and bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPMED) encounters challenges such as organic fouling, NH 3 back-diffusion, and high energy consumption. The efficacy of electrodialysis reversal (EDR) combined with bipolar membrane electrodialysis using cation-exchange membranes (BPC) was assessed as a more practical configuration (EDR + BPC). Additionally, a novel configuration involving monovalent selective cation-exchange membranes (MSCEMs) in an EDR + BPC setup (SEDR + BPC) was investigated. Comparisons were made among BPMED, EDR + BPC, and SEDR + BPC under three load ratios (L N ) of 0.8, 1, and 1.3 during continuous operation. The innovative SEDR + BPC configuration, with an L N of 0.8, exhibited the lowest energy consumption for transported TAN (E TAN ) at 4.4 MJ·kgN −1 removal and achieved the highest TAN removal efficiency of 78 % with an L N of 1.3. In contrast to conventional BPMED, SEDR + BPC allowed for the recovery of potentially back-diffused NH 3 into the acid chamber, minimizing transport losses. Furthermore, scaling in the base chamber was reduced due to the contribution of MSCEMs when applying an L N of 0.8. The MSCEMs increased the molar ratio of TAN over (Mg 2+ + Ca 2+ ) in the concentrate and decreased it in the diluate. EDR + BPC and SEDR + BPC configurations exhibited stable and lower cell resistance throughout the operation compared to BPMED, attributed to their ability to generate higher concentration gradients. The results clearly demonstrated the feasibility of low-energy TAN removal from real reject water from sludge anaerobic digestion using the SEDR + BPC setup.

Abstract:The increasing demand for environmentally friendly production of alkaline and acidic materials has boosted the advancement of electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) as an efficient and sustainable technology. In this context, this study aims to optimize the EDBM system performance and minimize its environmental impact. Specifically, this work focuses on the use of concentrated brines in alkaline or acid channels as innovative EDBM schemes to reduce freshwater consumption. Two different commercial monopolar and bipolar membrane sets were tested (Fumatech and SUEZ) showing a difference in productivity ratios, between them, ranging from 9% to 40%. The use of brine in the compartments leads to a reduction in the water footprint and highlights potential pathways to enhance the overall EDBM system sustainability. Remarkably, introducing a brine in the alkaline channels does not affect energy performance while achieving 50% reduction in freshwater consumption. In contrast, feeding brine into acid channels leads to a performance decline. This research provides a holistic perspective on the interplay between technical and environmental performance of EDBM process, providing a valuable guide for future research and paving the way for novel membranes, long-term stability, and strategies to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact, toward sustainable industrial practices.

Abstract:These days electrodialysis is recognized as a promising process for the removal and recovery of nutrients from wastewater. However, the electrodialysis process for nutrient recovery is different from traditional desalination electrodialysis, and limited knowledge exists regarding its new application. Therefore, a comprehensive review and critical comparison of the different parameters and optimal operation conditions for nutrient recovery by electrodialysis in various studies are discussed in this manuscript. The relationship between the nutrient recovery rate and critical operating parameters such as voltage, the total effective area of the membrane, number of cell pairs, and feed composition in various wastewater sources is statistically analyzed. Regression results showed that increasing voltages, membrane, and cell numbers improved the recovery rate, respectively. However, it should be mentioned that different mobility behavior of ions are influenced by an electric double layer, selectivity, repulsion of the ion-exchange membrane, and operation conditions including voltage, current density, operation time, and ion concentrations. Hybrid processes enhance the electrodialysis efficiency in wastewater by increasing the feed concentration. The capital and operating costs of the electrodialysis process can be significantly affected by the pump, electrode, and ion-exchange membrane characteristics. Fouling and scaling as a challenge in electrodialysis are investigated in our study.

Abstract:Ammonia monohydrate (NH 3 ·H 2 O) is an important chemical widely used in industrial, agricultural, and pharmaceutical fields. Reject water is used as the raw material in self-built bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) to produce NH 3 ·H 2 O. The effects of electrode materials, membrane stack structure, and operating conditions (current density, initial concentrations of the reject water, and initial volume ratio) on the BMED process were investigated, and the economic costs were analyzed. The results showed that compared with graphite electrodes, ruthenium-iridium-titanium electrodes as electrode plates for BMED could increase current efficiency (25%) and reduce energy consumption (26%). Compared with two-compartment BMED, three-compartment BMED had a higher ammonia nitrogen conversion rate (86.6%) and lower energy consumption (3.5 kW· h/kg). Higher current density (15 mA/cm 2 ) could achieve better current efficiency (79%). The BMED performances were improved when the initial NH4+ concentrations of the reject water increased from 500 mg NH4+ /L to 1000 mg NH4+ /L, but the performance decreased as the concentration increased from 1000 mg NH4+ /L to 1500 mg NH4+ /L. High initial volume ratio of the salt compartment and product compartment was beneficial for reducing energy consumption. Under the optimal operating conditions, only 0.13 $/kg reject water was needed to eliminate the environmental impact of reject water accumulation. This work indicates that BMED can not only achieve desalination of reject water, but also generate products that alleviate the operational pressure of factories.

Abstract:Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes (EDBM) has become a key technology for valorising waste brine streams as a new chemical production route. Even though its application has been widely studied using single electrolyte solutions (e.g., NaCl or Na2SO4), there is still a lack of knowledge about using multi-ionic mixtures. For the first time, this work aims to evaluate the EDBM performance when treating synthetic solutions mimicking the waste brines produced in a integrated process for the valorisation of solar saltworks bitterns. The behaviour of a lab-scale EDBM unit was assessed using SUEZ ion exchange membranes (IEMs), operating at 300 A m−2, and the ion transport through IEMs was investigated, based on the calculation of apparent transport numbers and selectivities. The results highlighted that multi-ionic solutions barely affected the production of hydroxide ions. Chlorides were transported up to 7 times faster than sulphates across the anion-exchange membranes, while the cation-exchange membranes exhibited slightly higher selectivity for potassium than for sodium (∼1.2). The current efficiencies ranged between 70 % and 80 %, while a minimum specific energy consumption of 1.60 kWh kg-1 NaOH was obtained for the most concentrated brine at 1 mol L-1 OH–. These results provide novel and valuable information to support the development and implementation of EDBM as a sustainable technology for supporting a resource-efficient and competitive economy through on-site and delocalized chemicals production routes.

Abstract:Phosphate recovery from excess sludge by electrodialysis was investigated on the basis of a reformation of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) technology. Electrodialysis operations containing conventional electrodialysis (CED), electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (EDBM), and integration of CED and EDBM were used for phosphate recovery. Phosphate was recovered as a concentrated phosphate solution and phosphoric acid by CED and EDBM, respectively. Both batch and continuous operation models were adopted. Nearly all of the phosphate in the solution could be recovered under batch operation of CED, and the recovery ratio could reach 95.8% under continuous operation. In the integration of electrodialysis, EDBM could realize the in situ conversion of the concentrated phosphate into phosphorus acid effectively, as another recovery form. A net production of phosphorus acid about 0.075 mol/L could be obtained under an operating current of 50 mA/cm(2) for EDBM, and the energy consumption was 29.3 kWh/(kg H3PO4) with a current efficiency about 75%.

Abstract:Electrodialysis is classified as a membrane separation process in which ions are transferred through selective ion-exchange membranes from one solution to another using an electric field as the driving force. Electrodialysis is a mature technology in the field of brackish water desalination, but in recent decades the development of new membranes has made it possible to extend their application in the food, drug, and chemical process industries, including wastewater treatment. This work describes the state of the art in the use of electrodialysis (ED) for metal removal from water and wastewater. The fundamentals of the technique are introduced based on the working principle, operational features, and transport mechanisms of the membranes. An overview of the key factors (i.e., the membrane properties, the cell configuration, and the operational conditions) in the ED performance is presented. This review highlights the importance of studying the inter-relation of parameters affecting the transport mechanism to design and optimize metal recovery through ED. The conventional applications of ED for the desalination of brackish water and demineralization of industrial process water and wastewater are discussed to better understand the key role of this technology in the separation, concentration, and purification of aqueous effluents. The recovery and concentration of metals from industrial effluents are evaluated based on a review of the literature dealing with effluents from different sources. The most relevant results of these experimental studies highlight the key role of ED in the challenge of selective recovery of metals from aqueous effluents. This review addresses the potential application of ED not only for polluted water treatment but also as a promising tool for the recovery of critical metals to avoid natural resource depletion, promoting a circular economy.

Abstract:Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) represent an emerging environmental biotechnology platform with the potential to simultaneously recover water, energy, and nutrients from concentrated wastewaters. The removal and beneficial capture of nutrients from AnMBR permeate has yet to be fully explored, therefore this study sought to foster iron phosphate recovery through a tertiary coagulation process, as well as characterize the recovered nutrient product (RNP) and assess its net phosphorus release, diffusion, and availability for plant uptake. One of the primary goals of this study was to optimize the dose of the coagulant, ferric chloride, and coagulant aid, aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH), for continuous application to the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) unit of an AnMBR pilot plant treating municipal wastewater, through controlled bench-scale jar tests. Anaerobic systems present unique challenges for nutrient capture, including high, dissolved hydrogen sulfide concentrations, along with settleability issues. The addition of the coagulant aid increases settleability, while enhancing phosphorus removal by up to 20%, decreasing iron demand. Water quality analysis indicated that a variety of factors affect nutrient capture, including the COD (chemical oxygen demand) concentration of the permeate and the limiting coagulant dose. COD >200 mg/L was shown to decrease the phosphorus removal efficiency by up to 15%. A combination of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy analysis was used to characterize the P-rich RNP which revealed a 2.58% w/w phosphorus content and the lack of a well-defined crystalline structure. Detailed studies on resin extractable phosphorus to assess the plant uptake potential also demonstrated that iron-based P-rich RNPs may not be an effective fertilizer product, as they can act as a phosphorus sink in some agricultural systems instead of a source.

Abstract:Underutilized wastewaters containing dilute levels of reactive nitrogen (Nr) can help rebalance the nitrogen cycle. This study describes electrodialysis and nitrate reduction (EDNR), a reactive electrochemical separation architecture that combines catalysis and separations to remediate nitrate and ammonium-polluted wastewaters while recovering ammonia. By engineering operating parameters ( e.g. , background electrolyte, applied potential, electrolyte flow rate), we achieved high recovery and conversion of Nr in both simulated and real wastewaters. The EDNR process demonstrated long-term robustness and up-concentration that recovered >100 mM ammonium fertilizer solution from agricultural runoff that contained 8.2 mM Nr. EDNR is the first reported process to our knowledge that remediates dilute real wastewater and recovers ammonia from multiple Nr pollutants, with an energy consumption (245 MJ per kg NH 3 –N in simulated wastewater, 920 MJ per kg NH 3 –N in agricultural runoff) on par with the state-of-the-art. Demonstrated first at proof-of-concept and engineered to technology readiness level (TRL) 4–5, EDNR shows great promise for distributed wastewater treatment and sustainable ammonia manufacturing.

Effects of electrodialysis conditions on waste acid reclamation: Modelling and validation

Abstract:Given its double functions of selective separation and concentration for ions, the potential of electrodialysis (ED) for the reclamation of waste acid has been widely recognized. In view of some differences from the cases of salt systems, a deep grasp on the effects of operating conditions on ED-based acid recovery is urgently required. Moreover, it is also challenging and desirable to effectively address the modelling issue of the membrane process. In this study, the influences of some typical operational factors, including current density, membrane selection, acid concentration of waste effluent, concentration differences between the dilute and concentrating compartments, on ED performances, such as its concentration evolution, current utilization and energy consumption, are systematically investigated. In particular, a fundamental model is established on the basis of the equations of Nernst-Planck, Navier-Stokes and Continuity to understand the influences of operating conditions and predict the relevant work performances. Therein, the proton diffusion coefficient of the used anion exchange membrane (AEM) can be regressed according to its practical performance and input. It is noticed that the obtained proton diffusion efficient is closely related to the AEM selection, but has almost nothing to do with the specific operational conditions and even the acid systems. A series of ED experiments show that the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, which verifies the validity of the proposed model. Especially, this work confirms that proton leakage across AEMs should be the culprit in the non-ideal behaviors of ED-based acid recovery. Hopefully, the new model can contribute to the stack design, process optimization and scale-up of the ED-based acid recovery.

Abstract:Wastewater containing abundant organics and nutrient resources requires large energy input in conventional treatment technologies to reach the discharge standard and/or to recover nutrient resources. This study presents a self-sustaining advanced wastewater purification and in situ nutrient recovery process accomplished by a newly designed 10-liter-scale bioelectrochemical system containing membrane stack configuration, which was called an advanced microbial nutrient recovery cell (AMNRC). After subsequent treatments in the AMNRC's anode, cathode and stacked desalination chambers, all the removals of organics and nutrient in the domestic wastewater were achieved higher than 95%, which represented < 24.9 mg/L of chemical oxygen demand,< 14.2 mg/L of total nitrogen (TN), < 6.5 mg/L of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and < 0.49 mg/L of total phosphorus (TP) were left in the final effluent. Three sequential treatment processes including anaerobic microbial degradation, aerobic microbial treatment, and electrical ion migration comprehensively facilitated the above removals. Meanwhile TN, NH4+-N and TP were concentrated in the recovery solution by 260%, 150%, and 490%, respectively. Ammonium and phosphate were then recovered as struvite during crystallization. The AMNRC was proved as an energy neutral approach to efficiently purify wastewater and simultaneously recover nutrient, the treatment processes were driven by the energy extracted from wastewater itself.

Abstract:The adoption of desalination processes for the production of fresh water is one of the main solutions to water scarcity . Desalination recovers fresh water from saline solutions, yet increasing their concentration during the process and producing a brine. The latter can have an environmental impact when discharged, thus requiring suitable disposal strategies or post-treatments. Among the processes reported in the literature, in this study, electrodialysis (ED) is studied as possible technology to be coupled to a standard desalination process in order to increase the global water recovery and produce hypersaline solution for subsequent brine-mining processes for the recovery of useful minerals. The performance in terms of Specific Energy Consumption (SEC), Total Recovery Ratio (RR TOT ) and Additional Levelized Cost Of Treatment (ALCOT) are assessed by considering industrial ED unit equipped with standard membranes and high-performing membranes. The influence of operating conditions such as electric voltage, electric current and solutions residence time on the performance of the system is investigated. Results reveal that, in the best conditions, a RR TOT between 55 % and 78 % is achieved with SEC in the range of 0.5–1.9 kWh·m −3 P and with ALCOT in between 0.10 €·m −3 P and 0.21 €·m −3 P . The integration of electrodialysis into standard desalination processes improves the efficiency and the sustainability of desalination, minimizing waste (zero-liquid discharge) and increasing productivity.

Abstract:Severe membrane fouling and the inability to remove/recover nitrogen and phosphorus are bottlenecks of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for large-scale application in wastewater treatment. Herein, an electrochemical AnMBR with a Mg anode-membrane module (electro-AnMBR) was built and showed good performance in terms of membrane fouling mitigation and nutrient recovery during sewage treatment. Compared with the traditional AnMBR, membrane fouling in the electro-AnMBR was reduced by up to 30%. The application of an electric field decreased the zeta potential, viscosity, and EPS concentration of the sludge-water liquor in the electro-AnMBR, which could improve the cake layer structure and thus enhance water permeability. Meanwhile, 26% of NH 4 + and 48% of PO 4 3- co-precipitated with Mg 2+ generating from the sacrificial Mg anode and were recovered as struvite deposited onto cathode in the electro-AnMBR. Hydrogen evolution provided a relatively alkaline pH environment, resulting in struvite electrodeposition on the graphic cathode, which partly separated the formed struvite from the sludge with a purity of 77%. In the electro-AnMBR, the electrochemical reactions provided alkalinity and effectively inhibited anaerobic acidification. The applied voltage of 0.6 V reduced the relative abundance of methanosaeta, but increased that of methanosarcina, which is also beneficial for the membrane anti-fouling.

Abstract:Ammonium is typically removed from treated wastewaters before discharge by converting it to nitrogen gas, but its capture and reuse could provide a new strategy for energy recovery at treatment plants. A three-stage electrochemical approach was developed here to selectively remove and concentrate ammonium derived from wastewater. Each stage contained a battery electrode deionization (BDI) cell containing two copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) electrodes separated into two channels using an anion exchange membrane. Through application of a low applied voltage (0.3 V) in each of the three stages, ammonium was concentrated greater than 6 times, from 5 to 32 mM (90 to 576 mg L−1), with minimal changes in the concentration of other cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) present in the water due to the high ammonium ion selectivity of CuHCF electrodes under these operating conditions. The cumulative energy use for the three-stage process was only 2.0 kW h per kg-N, compared to the 14 kW h per kg-N that would be needed to manufacture this amount of ammonium from nitrogen gas. Nitrogen recovery methods such as these will be needed to further transform used water plants into more effective resource recovery treatment plants.

Abstract:Centrate from digested sludge dewatering holds promise for nutrient recovery, but concerns about organic and inorganic contaminants must be addressed. This study investigates the effectiveness of a two-stage system in retaining organic micropollutants, metals, and metalloids during recovery of a multi-nutrient solution from centrate. In combination, the lab-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) and electrodialysis (ED) effectively reduced contaminant loads by >90% for 21 of the monitored 22 organic micropollutants and for six of nine metals and metalloids. The combined process demonstrated resilience to fluctuations in the MBR stage, with a temporary 87% decrease in MBR removal efficiency for carbamazepine translating to only 6% decrease after the ED. Despite this robust performance, individual compounds such as valsartan acid or benzotriazole were detected at around 10–20 μg L −1 in the recovered nutrient solution. Zn was present at around 400 μg L −1 with the highest concentrations of monitored metals. Still, all metals ranged at least one order of magnitude below recommended values for wastewater reuse. Therefore, the risk associated with contaminant uptake into hydroponically cultivated produce is considered low, given the high retention in the system and the necessary dilution of the multi-nutrient solution before its application as fertilizer. This study demonstrates the effective removal of contaminants by the combination of MBR and ED for nutrient recovery from centrate, achieving a fit-for-purpose quality of the derived multi-nutrient solution.
