Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of psychopathology, traumatic distress and quality of life in men with newly diagnosed clinically localized prostate cancer, the effect on these of a consultation in a combined-specialist early-prostate clinic, and predictors of psychopathology.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-eight patients were recruited from the combined clinic; they completed a battery of questionnaires including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the revised Impact of Event Scale (IES) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, before their first appointment. Two weeks later they completed the HADS, IES and a patient-satisfaction survey.RESULTS: The overall level of psychopathology varied among the questionnaires used, from 0% on the HADS depression scale, 8% on the HADS anxiety scale and 14% on the IES. Anxiety and traumatic stress symptoms were commoner than depressive symptoms. The quality-of-life scores showed a relatively good level of functioning. Pre-morbid factors and disease status did not predict psychological distress. Younger age was mildly predictive of poorer psychological functioning. Anxiety symptoms reduced slightly after a joint clinic appointment, whereas depressive symptoms showed a slight increase.CONCLUSION: This study suggests that men with early localized prostate cancer have low levels of psychopathology overall. However, some men experience distressing psychological symptoms and it is important that future research is conducted to help develop clear guidelines on the optimal methods of detecting and managing men with prostate cancer who have mental health difficulties.

Psychosocial distress after radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, or (partial) nephrectomy - a comprehensive analysis of 4,290 German cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate and identify predictors of psychosocial distress (PD) in patients after surgical treatment for prostate cancer (PC), bladder cancer (BC), or kidney cancer (KC) during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large, multi-institutional cohort. Material and methods: Patients undergoing inpatient rehabilitation (IR) after radical prostatectomy (RP), radical cystectomy (RC), or (partial) nephrectomy in one IR center in 2021 were included. PD was evaluated by the Questionnaire on Stress in Cancer Patients (QSC-R23) at the beginning (T1) and the end (T2) of IR. Regression analyses were performed to identify disease-specific predictors for high PD. Results: A total of 4,290 patients (3,413 after RP, 563 after RC, 314 after (partial) nephrectomy) were included in this study. Median PD decreased significantly during IR across all tumor entities (each p < 0.001). The number of PC and BC patients suffering from high PD decreased significantly (each p < 0.001), but not in KC patients (p = 0.310). Younger age independently predicts high PD in all three malignancies, while additionally positive surgical margins (p = 0.016), ileal conduit (IC; p < 0.001), and nephrectomy (p = 0.032) independently predict high PD in PC, BC, and KC patients, respectively. During the Covid-19 pandemic the demand for individual psycho-oncologic counseling increased significantly in PC (p = 0.03) and KC (p = 0.001) patients. Conclusion: Younger age independently predicts high PD in the three main urological malignancies. Positive surgical margins in PCa, IC in BCa, and nephrectomy in KC are disease-specific independent predictors for high PD in the early period after surgical treatment. Implications for cancer survivors: Disease-specific predictors for high PD may help clinicians identify patients at risk and may guide timely referrals to psycho-oncologic counseling in the early period after uro-oncologic surgery.

Abstract:PURPOSE Adults with a history of prostate cancer experience several physical and mental stressors. However, limited information is available about the prevalence of psychological distress in this population and its association with clinical outcomes in a nationally representative sample. METHODS We identified adults with history of prostate cancer from a nationally representative cohort (2000-2018 US National Health Interview Survey) and its linked mortality files through December 31, 2019. The six-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) was used to assess psychological distress. The associations between psychological distress severity, emergency room (ER) usage, and mortality risk were estimated using multivariable logistic and Cox proportional hazards models, which were both adjusted for age, survey year, race/ethnicity, region, education, health insurance, comorbidities, functional limitations, and time since cancer diagnosis. RESULTS Among the 3,451 adults with history of prostate cancer surveyed, 96 (2.4%), 434 (11.3%), and 2,921 (86.3%) reported severe, moderate, or low/no mental distress, respectively. During the 12 months preceding the survey, 812 (22.8%) adults with history of prostate cancer visited the ER. After a median follow-up of 81 months, 937 (25.5%) deaths occurred. Compared with participants with low/no mental distress, those with severe mental distress reported the highest utilization of the ER (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.57 [95% CI, 1.51 to 4.37]) and exhibited the highest all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.83 [95% CI, 1.29 to 2.60]), followed by those with moderate mental distress (ER use aOR, 1.76 [95% CI, 1.29 to 2.42]; all-cause mortality aHR, 1.22 [95% CI, 0.92 to 1.62]). CONCLUSION Among US adults with history of prostate cancer, psychological distress was associated with increased ER use and mortality risk. Notably, severe psychological distress was correlated with the highest rates of ER visits and mortality risk. However, given the retrospective nature of this study, uncontrolled confounding variables need to be considered when interpreting the findings.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Studies on anxiety within oncology show a high prevalence of anxiety both during and after the course of the disease. However, little is known about factors that influence the level of anxiety in the diagnostic phase. This study examines the presence of anxiety during diagnosis and treatment planning and explores how a monitoring (ie, information seeking) coping style and the suggested treatment plan (ie, with or without chemotherapy) interact with anxiety.METHODS: Anxiety scores (6-item State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) were collected from 81 colorectal cancer patients before and after their visit to the outpatient Gastrointestinal Oncological Center Amsterdam. A cut-off score (>44) was used to indicate highly anxious patients.RESULTS: More than half (59%) of the patients were classified as highly anxious before consultation. Although anxiety scores significantly decreased after consultation (t = 3.149, P = .002), 37% of the patients remained highly anxious. Reductions in anxiety were specifically observed for patients with a higher monitoring coping style and patients for whom a treatment plan without chemotherapy was proposed. Interestingly, high monitors for whom treatment without chemotherapy was proposed showed a major decrease in anxiety, whereas low monitors for whom treatment starting with chemotherapy was proposed showed a great increase in anxiety.CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic phase is associated with high levels of anxiety. Distinct patterns of anxiety were identified, depending on patients' coping style and the suggested treatment plan. Remarkably, patients with a lower monitoring coping style became particularly anxious when they were advised to start treatment with chemotherapy.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to assess the psychological distress of cancer patients in a disease-specific manner as well as the demographic and medical variables that have an impact on the distress. Psychological distress was assessed with the Questionnaire on Stress in Cancer Patients revised version, which has been developed and psychometrically evaluated in Germany. It consists of items about 23 cancer-specific stress situations, which have to be answered in terms of relevance and amount of distress. A heterogeneous sample of 1721 cancer in- and outpatients was assessed. For the total group, the most important distress is the fear of disease progression. We consider between 23.4% (ca. of the upper gastrointestinal tract) and 40.9% (breast cancer patients) as highly distressed. The most distressed diagnostic subgroups are patients with soft tissue tumours and breast cancer patients. There are no global (general) stress factors, as the relevant demographic and medical 'risk factors' varied between the diagnostic subgroups. Cancer-specific distress questionnaires give a more precise insight into patients' experience than general or psychiatric questionnaires. They are not only used in large screening studies but also in routine medicine, particularly when the objective is to identify patients to whom psycho-oncological support is to be given.

Abstract:Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was measured in bronchial tissue homogenate and blood from rats subjected to single and repeated 4‐h daily inhalation exposure to toluene diisocyanate (TDI) or control atmospheres. A single 4‐h exposure to TDI in the concentration range of 0.7–4.3 ppm did not decrease AChE activity in bronchial tissue but a 4‐h exposure to 0.6 ppm TDI, or greater, for two consecutive days did reduce this activity (19% to 33% of the controls). Increasing the level of exposure to TDI for two consecutive days from 0.6 to 4.0 ppm and extending the length of exposure to 1.2 ppm TDI from 2 to 4, 9 or 14 days produced no further decrease in bronchial ACHE activity. Throughout these experiments, blood AChE activity remained unchanged. In rats exposed to 0.3 or 1 ppm TDI for 3 weeks, staining of the bronchial smooth muscle for AChE was reduced (36% of the controls) after exposure to 1 ppm TDI. These results support, for the first time, in vivo and localized anti‐AChE activty by TDI.
African‐centered coping, resilience, and psychological distress in Black prostate cancer patients

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Blacks have the highest incidence and mortality rates for prostate cancer (PCa) in the U.S. Black PCa patients (PCaP) also report high psychological distress. Identifying culturally specific coping strategies that lower distress among Black PCaP could help improve psychological interventions for this group. African-centered coping (strategies unique to the structure of Black personality and the African-centered worldview) have been identified. We hypothesized that these coping strategies and resilience would be associated with lower psychological distress (anxiety and depression) in Black PCaP.METHODS: Black PCaP (N = 95) completed a survey assessing African-centered coping strategies, resilience, anxiety, and depression. Multiple regression was employed to examine African-centered coping strategies and resilience as predictors of psychological distress.RESULTS: Participants were aged M = 67 ± 9 years and 52% had late-stage PCa. Twenty percent met criteria for clinically significant anxiety, and 17% for depression. African-centered coping strategies were not associated with lower anxiety or depression, while resilience was associated with decreased anxiety (r = -0.45, p < 0.001) and depression (r = -0.54, p < 0.001). Mediation analyses did not support an indirect association among African-centered coping strategies, resilience, and anxiety and depression.CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to hypotheses, African-centered coping strategies were not associated with psychological distress. However, as predicted, greater resilience was associated with lower anxiety and depression. These findings support the relevancy of resilience in Blacks' psychological adjustment to PCa. It might be worthwhile to explore African-centered coping strategies that help Black PCaP cope with distress.

Abstract:734 Background: Prospective data assessing prevalence of anxiety and depression in a diverse surgical oncology population are currently lacking. Psychological distress may affect patient outcomes in the postoperative setting. The General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9) surveys are validated instruments to assess severity of anxiety and depression, respectively. We aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression using validated screening tools, and assess associations between anxiety and depression with clinical outcomes in patients presenting to our surgical oncology clinic. Methods: A prospective, surgeon-blinded study was conducted to assess associations of anxiety and depression with postoperative outcomes in patients with histologically proven malignancy who underwent surgical intervention. Preoperatively, the GAD and PHQ9 surveys were administered to evaluate for anxiety and depression, respectively. Frailty level was also assessed using the validated Risk Analysis Index (RAI-C) survey. Postoperative outcomes included rates of ICU admission, 30- and 90-day readmissions, postoperative complications classified by Clavien-Dindo score, and disposition to home versus rehabilitation facilities. Outcomes were compared between different groups as defined by the severity of anxiety and depression. Results: 191 patients met inclusion criteria. The cohort was stratified into three groups by severity of anxiety and depression. Overall, 59 (31%) patients reported at least moderate anxiety as defined by a GAD score ≥5, with 30 (15.7%) patients reporting severe anxiety (GAD score ≥ 10). Similarly, 62 (32%) patients reported at least mild depression as defined by a PHQ9 score ≥5, with 21 (11%) patients experiencing moderate to severe depression (PHQ9 ≥ 10). No difference was detected in length of stay, ICU admission, 30- and 90-day readmission, and postoperative complications. Preoperative frailty, as defined by RAI-C score >21, was also not associated with anxiety or depression. Marital status of single or widowed was found to be significantly associated with mild depression (p=0.027) and moderate to severe depression (p=0.028), respectively. Conclusions: While anxiety and depression were not found to be significantly associated with postoperative outcomes, they are prevalent in surgical oncology patients, affecting approximately one-third of our patient population. The GAD and PHQ9 surveys are validated instruments that can be administered easily to identify surgical oncology patients with psychological distress. Comprehensive evaluation of psychological well-being, in conjunction with a thorough social evaluation, can identify those patients who may benefit from referral to supportive resources.

Abstract:In cancer patients, psychological distress, which encompasses anxiety, depression, and somatization, arises from the complex interplay of emotional and behavioral reactions to the diagnosis and treatment, significantly influencing their functionality and quality of life. The aim was to investigate factors associated with psychological distress in cancer patients. This prospective and multicenter study, conducted by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), included two cohorts of patients with cancer (localized resected or advanced unresectable). They completed surveys assessing psychological distress (BSI-18) before and after cancer treatment and coping (MINI-MAC) and spirituality (FACIT-sp) prior to therapy. A multivariable logistic regression analysis and a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were conducted. Between 2019 and 2022, 1807 patients were evaluated, mostly women (54%), average age 64 years. The most frequent cancers were colorectal (30%), breast (25%) and lung (18%). Men had lower levels of anxiety and depression (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.52–0.84; OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.56–0.93). Colorectal cancer patients experienced less anxiety (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.43–0.92), depression (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.37–0.81), and somatization (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.42–0.83). Patients with localized cancer and spiritual beliefs had reduced psychological distress, whereas those with anxious preoccupation had higher level. SEM revealed a relationship between psychological distress and coping strategies, emphasizing how baseline anxious preoccupation exacerbates post-treatment distress. This study suggests that age, sex, extension and location of cancer, coping and spirituality influence psychological distress in cancer patients.

Abstract:245 Background: Individuals with cancer often rely on various coping strategies as they navigate their cancer course. Little is known about coping strategies among patients enrolled on EP-CTs or associations of these coping strategies with other PROs. Methods: We prospectively enrolled adults with cancer participating in EP-CTs at Massachusetts General Hospital from 4/2021-1/2023. Participants completed baseline surveys prior to EP-CT initiation that assessed coping strategies (Brief COPE), quality of life (QOL; Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General), hope (Herth Hope Index), depression/anxiety symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-4), and financial wellbeing (COST tool). We used regression models to explore associations of coping strategies with patient characteristics and PROs (QOL, hope, depression/anxiety symptoms, financial wellbeing). Results: Among 205 participants (median age=63.3 [range: 31.8-88.6], 57% female), the most common cancer types were gastrointestinal (35%) and breast (20%). Patients in this cohort utilized the following coping strategies (range 0-6): acceptance (mean=4.81), emotional support (mean=4.63), active (mean=4.30), positive reframing (mean=3.13), religion (mean=2.77), self-blame (mean=.87), denial (mean=.59), and behavioral disengagement (mean=.36). Older age was associated with decreased use of self-blame coping (B=-0.02, p=.025). Female sex was associated with higher scores for denial (B=0.42, p=.009), emotional support (B=0.50, p=.037), positive reframing (B=0.57, p=.036), and religion (B=1.02, p=.001) coping compared with males. Conclusions: In this cohort of EP-CT participants, we demonstrated that patients use multiple coping strategies and identified differences by age and sex. Notably, we found that some coping behaviors (acceptance, emotional support, positive reframing) were more favorably associated with QOL, hope, depression/anxiety symptoms, and financial wellbeing than others (denial, self-blame, behavioral disengagement). Interventions seeking to enhance PROs in this population should address patients’ use of coping strategies. Bio-inspired polydopamine: a versatile and powerful platform for covalent synthesis of molecular sieve membranes.

Abstract:Inspired by the bioadhesive ability of the marine mussel, a simple, versatile, and powerful synthesis strategy was developed to prepare highly reproducible and permselective molecular sieve membranes by using polydopamine as a novel covalent linker. Attributing to the formation of strong covalent and noncovalent bonds, ZIF-8 nutrients are attracted and bound to the support surface, thus promoting the ZIF-8 nucleation and the growth of uniform, well intergrown, and phase-pure ZIF-8 molecular sieve membranes. The developed ZIF-8 membranes show high hydrogen selectivity and thermal stability. At 150 °C and 1 bar, the mixture separation factors of H2/CO2, H2/N2, H2/CH4, and H2/C3H8 are 8.9, 16.2, 31.5 and 712.6, with H2 permeances higher than 1.8 × 10(-7) mol·m(-2)·s(-1)·Pa(-1), which is promising for hydrogen separation and purification.
Prevalence and Determinants of Psychological Distress in Adolescent and Young Adult Patients with Cancer: A Multicenter Survey

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the current prevalence and determinants of psychological distress and the association of distress with general information, character strengths, medical coping, and social support in Chinese adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15-39 years with cancer.METHODS: A multicenter survey was carried out. Eight hundred and nine patients completed the Chinese version of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network distress thermometer (DT), the three-dimensional inventory of character strengths, the medical coping modes questionnaire, and the Social Support Rating Scale.RESULTS: The current prevalence of psychological distress in Chinese AYAs with cancer was 83.4%. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that gender, age, educational level, marriage, monthly income, exercise intensity, cancer classifications, treatments, self-control, confrontation, avoidance, and subjective support were all associated with distress. AYA cancer patients who were female, younger, or divorced or had a lower monthly income, education level, or exercise intensity were more likely to have higher level of distress. Compared to AYAs with other cancer classifications, patients with digestive system malignancies, breast cancers, and head and neck malignancies had a higher prevalence of distress. Patients receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy were more likely to be distressed. The higher the self-control, confrontation, avoidance, and subjective support scores were, the lower the prevalence of distress was among AYA cancer patients.CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of psychological distress in AYA cancer patients was relatively high. Potential interventions targeting exercise intensity, character strengths, medical coping, and social support may decrease the prevalence of psychological distress in this patient population.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Esophageal cancer patients often feel depressed and are fearful of metastasis and death. The objective of this study was to clarify the characteristics of patients with psychological distress at all 5time points compared with patients with no psychological distress especially from standpoints of personal coping styles and QOL. Methods: In total, 102 of 152 consecutive patients who attended the outpatient clinic at Toranomon Hospital between April 2017 and April 2019 met eligibility criteria for inclusion in this study. Questionnaires designed to identify psychological distress(HADS-scores) and assess QOL(EORTC QLQ C-30/OES18) were administered at 5 time points from the time of the first outpatient consultation to 3 months after esophagectomy. The questionnaire of coping strategies(MAC-scales) was administered at only Time1 point. Results: Based on the trends of HADS-scores, we defined two groups:“persistent high-HAD scores” and “persistent low-HADS scores”. There are strong relationships between psychological distress and coping strategy, and psychological distress and QOL. The possibility that there are relationships between stress coping strategies and some QOL status depending on some point of treatment. Conclusions: The psychological distress during treatment course of esophageal cancer is significantly associated with the coping strategies and QOL influenced by esophagectomy. This study can provide baseline information for identifying patients in need of psychological management and paves the way for larger clinical studies in the future.
An Analysis of Symptom Burden and Its Predictive Factors in Patients with Prostate Cancer

Abstract:Objective To assess the symptom burden and its predictive factors in patients with prostate cancer. Methods A cross-sectional study of 370 men with prostate cancer were conducted in the department of urology, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. The questionnaire included a general questionnaire, Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite 26-item version (EPIC-26) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results The average score of EPIC-26 in patients with prostate cancer was 25.32±12.00. The sexual function (15.59±7.38) and endocrine disorder (4.09±3.70) scored higher in five domains. There were significant differences in symptom burden scores among different treatment methods (P<0.01). Multiple linear regression showed that endocrine therapy, anxiety, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and income were the influencing factors of symptom burden in this population, which could explain 49.3% of symptom burden. Conclusions The symptom burden of patients with prostate cancer is heavy, especially during endocrine therapy. Health care provider should focus on assessing the psychology of them. What′s more, it is important to develop the symptom management and psychological support, especially for patients with lower income and advanced patients.

Abstract:Advancements in cancer treatment and early detection have extended survival rates, transforming many cancers into chronic conditions. However, cancer diagnosis and treatment can trigger significant psychological distress, including depression and anxiety, impacting patient outcomes and care. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of and identify the risk factors for depression and anxiety among cancer patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted, including patients under the care of the oncology department at a tertiary medical center between June 2021 and October 2023. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) short forms. Logistic regression analysis identified risk factors for depression and anxiety. The study population included 159 patients, with 40.3% reporting worsening mental health, but only about half of them received therapy. Among the study participants, 22.6% experienced symptoms of depression and 30.2% experienced symptoms of anxiety. Single-cancer patients and those with metastases were at increased risk for depression, while those with a disease duration of more than a year and patients with female-specific cancer were more likely to experience anxiety. Given the high prevalence of mental health deterioration in cancer patients, closer monitoring and validated assessment tools are essential to improve depression and anxiety diagnosis and facilitate early interventions.

Abstract:The authors report on two cases, one of supravalvular aortic aneurysm and one of subvalvular aortic aneurysm. Both patients suffered from bacterial endocarditis of the aortic valve, superimposed on previous rheumatic valvular disease. The authors believe that such aneurysms represent typical though rare complication of bacterial endocarditis of the aortic valve. Subvalvular aneurysms should be the consequence of the systolic stress acting on the myocardial wall involved by endocarditis, whereas supravalvular aneurysms could result from the jet-lesion through the affected valve.
Are cancer patients with high depressive symptom levels able to manage these symptoms without professional care? The role of coping and social support

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Around 25% of cancer patients experiences depressive symptoms. However, the majority does not receive formal psychological care because patients often prefer managing symptoms alone or with informal social support. Previous research has shown that adaptive coping and social support can indeed be effective in managing relatively mild depressive symptoms. However, higher depressive symptom levels rarely improve without psychological treatment. This longitudinal study examined how and to what extent coping and social support are related to reductions in depressive symptoms in cancer patients with moderate to severe depressive symptoms.METHODS: Respondents were diagnosed with cancer in the past five years, experienced high depressive symptom levels (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) and were not receiving psychological care at baseline. We collected data with self-report questionnaires (including PHQ-9, brief COPE and Social Support List) at two assessments, taken three months apart.RESULTS: Although depressive symptoms decreased significantly between baseline and follow-up, the average level at follow-up was still moderate to severe. Patients using less avoidant coping, specifically less substance use, were more likely to report a reduction of depressive symptoms. We found no significant beneficial effects of approach coping and social support (coping) on the course of depressive symptoms.CONCLUSIONS: A significant group of cancer patients with high levels of depressive symptoms do not seem able to effectively manage depressive symptoms by themselves, especially those more likely to avoid dealing with their symptoms. Cancer patients can be educated about avoidant coping and its possible detrimental effects, as well as being informed about possibilities of psychosocial services.

Abstract:Objective This paper aims to evaluate the literature on the prevalence of psychological distress and its associated factors in patients with breast cancer. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang were searched from inception to 11 June 2024. Eligibility criteria Studies reported data on the prevalence and correlates of psychological distress were included. Review, letter, conference abstracts and articles not available in English and Chinese were excluded. Data extraction and synthesis Two researchers independently conducted literature screening, data extraction and bias risk assessment. Meta-analysis was employed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of psychological distress in patients with breast cancer. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale were used for quality assessment. Meta-analysis was performed by using the R V.4.1.1 software. Results In total, 34 studies representing 13 828 patients with breast cancer were included in the study. Most of the studies were cross-sectional study (n=25, 73.53%%). The pooled prevalence of psychological distress was 50% (95% CI 42% to 58%, I 2 =98%). Results showed that psychological distress was positively correlated with younger age (z=0.13, 95% CI 0.07 to 0.20), having children (z=0.39, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.61), poor financial situation (z=0.12, 95% CI –0.03 to 0.26), short time since diagnosis (z=0.19, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.36), previous treatment (z=0.15, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.27), distant metastasis (z=0.31, 95% CI 0.07 to 0.52), chemotherapy (z=0.22, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.38), prior emotional status (z=0.40, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.50), body image damaged (z=0.10, 95% CI –0.01 to 0.21), negative coping (z=0.12, 95% CI –0.11 to 0.34), communication avoidance (z=0.32, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.39) and negatively correlated with married (z=–0.25, 95% CI 0.45 to –0.02), high education level (z=–0.19, 95% CI –0.40 to 0.05), having insured (z=–0.04, 95% CI –0.15 to 0.08), full employment (z=–0.40, 95% CI –0.61 to –0.14), time of completion of treatment (z=–0.12, 95% CI –0.30 to –0.06), surgery (z=–0.05, 95% CI –0.53 to 0.45), social support (z=–0.18, 95% CI –0.29 to –0.06), post-traumatic growth (z=–0.19, 95% CI –0.34 to –0.03), good physical conditions (z=–0.17, 95% CI –0.29 to –0.04), positive coping (z=–0.22, 95% CI –0.53 to 0.15). Conclusion Our findings indicated that the prevalence of psychological distress in patients with breast cancers was 50% and 21 correlates of psychological distress. Screening and evidence-based interventions are urgent and essential to address this public concern and promote the health of patients with breast cancer. PROSPERO registration number CRD42023397109.

Abstract:Background: Recent large population-based studies have shed light on an association between prostate cancer (PCa) survivorship and mental health, which emerged when the comparison group was either men without a history of cancer or those with any other type of cancer except prostate. Here we examine the role of surgery alone, compared to other types of treatment modalities in this association in a population-based sample of men with prostate or other types of cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on a subsample of 632 male participants aged 36–69 from the 2009–2015 survey cycle of the Atlantic PATH cohort study. The primary outcomes were the presence of mild, moderate or severe depression or anxiety indicators and were assessed using the seven-item generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) scale and the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. The presence of a lifetime history of PCa or other form of cancer (except PCa) was the main predictor variable and was assessed in cancer treatment modality (surgery or other types of treatment modalities) stratified analyses. Covariates included age, marital status, household income, comorbidity, and survivorship time. Results: The presence of depression in this sample was prevalent among 17.7% of men, and of anxiety among 9.3% of men. Survivors who were treated with surgery for their PCa diagnosis had 7.55 statistically significantly higher odds of screening positive for current depression symptoms compared with those of other forms of cancer in controlled analyses. These differences were not observed for anxiety. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the need for multidisciplinary survivorship care plans among PCa patients, especially those who undergo surgery. Targeted programming aimed at prioritizing and delivering comprehensive mental health support to PCa survivors early in the survivorship journey is justified.
