Abstract:Although antibiotics are widely detected in river water, their quantitative relationships with influencing factors in rivers remain largely unexplored. Here, 15 widely used antibiotics were comprehensively analyzed in the Dongjiang River of the Pearl River system. The total antibiotic concentration in river water ranged from 13.84 to 475.04 ng/L, with fluoroquinolones increasing from 11 % in the upstream to 38 % in the downstream. The total antibiotic concentration was high downstream and significantly correlated with the spatial distribution of population density, animal production, and land-use type. The total risk quotient of antibiotics for algae was higher than that for crustaceans and fish. Based on the optimized risk quotient method, amoxicillin, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin were identified as priority antibiotics. The key predictors of antibiotic levels were screened through Mantel test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression models. Water physicochemical parameters significantly impacted antibiotics and could be used as easy-to-measure surrogates associated with elevated antibiotics. Cropland negatively affected fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides, whereas urban land exerted positive impacts on fluoroquinolones, β-lactam, and sulfonamides. In the main stream, population, animal production, urbanization status, and economic development had key effects on the distribution of florfenicol, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and sulfadiazine.

Seasonal occurrence of multiple classes of antibiotics in East China rivers and their association with suspended particulate matter

Abstract:Understanding the occurrence and fate of antibiotics from different categories is vital to predict their environmental exposure and risks. This study presents the spatiotemporal occurrence of 45 multi-class antibiotics and their associations with suspended particulate matter (SPM) in Xiaoqing River (XRB) and Yellow River (YRB) via 10-month monitoring in East China. Thirty-five and 31 antibiotics were detected in XRB and YRB, respectively. Among them, fluoroquinolones (FQs) had the highest total mean concentration (up to 24.8 μg/L in XRB and 15.4 μg/L in YRB), followed by sulfonamides (SAs) (14.0 μg/L and 15.4 μg/L) and macrolides (MLs) (1.1 μg/L and 1.6 μg/L). Significant spatial-temporal variations were found in both rivers where higher concentrations of antibiotics were observed in urban and densely populated areas during winter and spring. Hydrological factors such as river flow and water volume, instream attenuation and antibiotic usage may cause the observed variabilities in the seasonal patterns of antibiotic pollution. Using linear regression analysis, for the first time, this study confirmed that the total concentrations of MLs (p < 0.05), FQs (p < 0.001) and SAs (p < 0.001) were strongly correlated with the turbidity/total suspended solids in the studied rivers (except MLs in YRB). It is thus suggested that partitioning processes onto SPM might affect the distribution of detected antibiotics in rivers, which are largely dependent on SPM composition and characteristics. The risk quotient (RQ) determined for up to 87 % of individual compound was below 0.1 in both rivers; however, the high joint toxicity reflected by the mixed RQs of detected antibiotics may rise risk alarm for aquatic species. Further aspects regarding active mechanisms of SPM-antibiotic interactions and ecological risks of coexistence of multiple antibiotics need to be investigated.
Antibiotic Profiles and Their Relationships with Multitrophic Aquatic Communities in an Urban River

Abstract:Antibiotics have garnered worldwide attention due to their omnipresence and detrimental effects on aquatic organ-isms, yet their potential relationships with multitrophic aquatic communities in natural rivers remain largely un-known. Here, we examined 107 antibiotics in water and sediment from an urban river in Chengdu, Sichuan province (China). The bacterial, algal, macroinvertebrates, and fish communities were synchronously measured based on the environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding approach, and their relationships with antibiotics were fur-ther investigated. The results showed that the total antibiotic concentrations ranged from 1.12 to 377 ng/L and from 7.95 to 145 ng/g in water and sediment, respectively. Significant seasonal variations in the concentrations and com-positions of antibiotics in water were observed. eDNA metabarcoding revealed great compositional variations of bac-terial, algal, macroinvertebrates, and fish communities along the river, and antibiotics had significant negative relationships with the community diversities of aquatic organisms (p < 0.05) except for fish. Meanwhile, significant negative correlations were observed between antibiotic concentrations and the relative abundances of essential metab-olism pathways of bacteria, e.g., energy metabolism (p < 0.05), carbohydrate metabolism (p < 0.05), and lipid metabolism (p < 0.01). Moreover, antibiotics demonstrated greater effects on the function of bacterial community compared with environmental variables. The findings highlight the significance of eDNA metabarcoding approach in revealing the relationships between aquatic communities and antibiotics, and call for further studies on the effects of antibiotics on multitrophic aquatic communities in natural waters.

Abstract:Understanding the occurrence, sources, transfer mechanisms, fugacity, and ecotoxicological risks of antibiotics play a pivotal role in improving the sustainability and ecological health of freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, in order to determine the levels of antibiotics, water and sediment samples were collected from multiple Eastern freshwater ecosystems (EFEs) of China, including Luoma Lake (LML), Yuqiao Reservoir (YQR), Songhua Lake (SHL), Dahuofang Reservoir (DHR), and Xiaoxingkai Lake (XKL), and were analyzed using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). EFEs regions are particularly interesting due to higher urban density, industrialization, and diverse land use in China. The findings revealed that a collective total of 15 antibiotics categorized into four families, which included sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), tetracyclines (TCs), and macrolides (MLs), exhibited high detection frequencies, indicating widespread antibiotic contamination. The pollution levels in the water phase were in the order of LML > DHR > XKL > SHL > YQR. The sum concentration of individual antibiotics for each water body ranged from not detected (ND) to 57.48 ng/L (LML), ND to 12.25 ng/L (YQR), ND to 57.7 ng/L (SHL), ND to 40.50 ng/L (DHR), and ND to 26.30 ng/L (XKL) in the water phase. Similarly, in the sediment phase, the sum concentration of individual antibiotics ranged from ND to 15.35 ng/g, ND to 198.75 ng/g, ND to 1233.34 ng/g, ND to 388.44 ng/g, and ND to 862.19 ng/g, for LML, YQR, SHL, DHR, and XKL, respectively. Interphase fugacity (ffsw) and partition coefficient (Kd) indicated dominant resuspension of antibiotics from sediment to water, causing secondary pollution in EFEs. Two groups of antibiotics, namely MLs (erythromycin, azithromycin, and roxithromycin) and FQs (ofloxacin and enrofloxacin), showed a medium-high level of adsorption tendency on sediment. Source modeling (PMF5.0) identified wastewater treatment plants, sewage, hospitals, aquaculture, and agriculture as the major antibiotic pollution sources in EFEs, contributing between 6% and 80% to different aquatic bodies. Finally, the ecological risk posed by antibiotics ranged from medium to high in EFEs. This study offers valuable insights into the levels, transfer mechanisms, and risks associated with antibiotics in EFEs, enabling the formulation of large-scale policies for pollution control.
Riverine antibiotic occurrence and potential ecological risks in a low-urbanized and rural basin of the middle Yangtze River: Socioeconomic, land use, and seasonal effects

Abstract:This study firstly investigated the effects of season, land use, and socioeconomic on the spatiotemporal changes of riverine antibiotic concentrations in a low urbanized and rural watershed. In the dry and wet seasons, water samples were collected and analyzed for 15 antibiotics. The results indicated that 14 antibiotics, excluding leucomycin, were detected. Monsoon led to significantly lower total antibiotic concentrations in the wet season (22.0ngL-1) than in the dry season (51.2ngL-1). Total antibiotic concentrations were dominated by amoxicillin (below limit of detection (<LOD)-34.7ngL-1)), erythromycin-H2O (<LOD-14.7ngL-1), roxithromycin (<LOD-27.9ngL-1), and trimethoprim (<LOD-6.34ngL-1). The total antibiotic concentrations were usually higher in the downstream areas of urban land than in the river reaches of forest land and agricultural land. At county or city scales, total antibiotic concentrations in the dry season were significantly correlated with the rural population, public budget, husbandry product and output, effluent volume, fishery product and output, and hospital number, which generally depend on land use in the basin. Amoxicillin poses a high ecological risk to aquatic algae, whereas erythromycin-H2O, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin pose medium ecological risks. However, trimethoprim poses a medium ecological risk to mollusks. These results provide improved insights into the characteristics of antibiotic occurrence and ecological risks in the waters of low-urbanized and rural areas in China and can be extrapolated worldwide.

Abstract:Antibiotics have become a global public concern due to the widespread presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. This study investigated the spatial and seasonal variation of conventional water quality parameters and 10 selected antibiotics in rivers inflowing into Taihu Lake. The results showed that total nitrogen, as a pollution driver factor, varied with the seasons, and higher concentrations of pollutants were generally found in the dry season compared with the wet season. For antibiotics, seven of them were detected in surface waters (n = 66) with detection frequencies (DFs) of 1.52-100% and eight antibiotics with DFs of 2.56-100% in sediments (n = 39). Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ, median: 1.47 ng/L), trimethoprim (TMP, median: 0.35 ng/L), and roxithromycin (ROX, median: 0.47 ng/L) with 100% DFs followed by erythromycin (ERY, median: 0.56 ng/L) with a DF of 90.91% accounted for a median percentage of 44.54%, 9.08%, 20.42%, and 13.16% of the ΣABs concentrations in surface waters. In contrast, enrofloxacin (ENR, median: 0.54 ng/g) and ROX (median: 0.29 ng/g) with 100% DFs accounted for a median percentage of 58.21% and 31.71% of the ΣABs concentrations in sediments. Antibiotics in surface waters were mainly related to T, DO, TN and NH3-N, but were mainly related to T, pH and TN for antibiotics in sediments. Furthermore, most of the detected antibiotics showed higher concentrations and more species of antibiotics in winter than in summer or autumn. Similarly, the ecological risk values of antibiotics showed higher in winter than in the other two seasons, whereas the overall risk levels were considered acceptable.

Abstract:The potential adverse environmental and health-related impacts of antibiotics are becoming more and more concerning. China is globally the largest antibiotic producer and consumer, possibly resulting in the ubiquity and high detection levels of antibiotics in environmental compartments. Clear status on the concentration levels and spatial distribution of antibiotic contamination in China's environment is necessary to gain insight into the establishment of legal and regulatory frameworks. This study collects information from over 170 papers reporting the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in China's environment. A total of 110 antibiotics were detected, and 28 priority antibiotics were ubiquitous in China in almost all compartments of the environment, excluding the atmosphere. Seven dominant antibiotics in all environment compartments were identified by cluster analysis, including tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. Meanwhile, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, and sulfamethazine were also frequently found in aqueous phases. Among the main basins where antibiotics were detected, the Haihe River Basin had higher median antibiotic concentrations in surface water compared to other basins, while the Huaihe River Basin had higher median concentrations in sediment. The median values of antibiotic concentrations in the sources were as follows: animal manure, 39 μg/kg (microgram per kilogram); WWTP (wastewater treatment plant) sludge, 39 μg/kg; animal wastewater, 156 ng/L (nanogram per liter); WWTP effluent: 15 ng/L. These concentrations are 1 − 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the receptors (soil, 2.1 μg/kg; sediment, 4.7 μg/kg; surface water, 8.1 ng/L; groundwater, 2.9 ng/L), whether in solid or aqueous phases. Based on the number of detected antibiotics in various environmental compartments, animal farms and WWTPs are the main sources of antibiotics, and surface water and sediment are the main receptors of antibiotics. Hierarchical clustering identified the two main pathways of antibiotic transfer in various environmental compartments, which are from animal wastewater/WWTP effluent to surface water/sediment and from animal manure/WWTP sludge to soil/groundwater.

Abstract:To assess the impact of antibiotic pollution to the ecosystem in urban water, the occurrence, seasonal, and spatial distributions, potential sources, and ecological risks of 18 targeted antibiotics in urban river, Pearl River located in Guangzhou city, were investigated. Surface water samples were sampled from 24 sites in Guangzhou center of Pearl River during dry and wet seasons. The results indicated that the concentrations of antibiotic residues were at the nanogram per liter level, except sulfamethazine (SMD) (μg/L). Sulfonamides (SAs) were the dominant antibiotics, contributing 60.4-65.0% to the total antibiotics. The concentrations of SAs, fluoroquinolones (QUs), macrolides (MLs), tetracyclines (TCs), and lincosamides (LCs) were higher in dry season than those in wet season at most sampling sites, which possibly resulted from the dilution effect of heavy rainfall. The concentrations of the antibiotic residues in Guangzhou were comparable or higher than other urban rivers. The calculation on risk quotients indicated that erythromycin-H2O (ETM-H2O) and tetracycline (TC) were of high risks. The source identification by the Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) method suggested that municipal wastewater treatment plants were primary sources of antibiotics. These results would provide important information for the environmental protect.

Abstract:A total of 34 antibiotics from five major classes of antibiotics, including macrolides, sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines and chloramphenicol, were considered as contaminants, considering the Yellow River Estuary as the study area. The distribution, sources and ecological risks of typical antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary were investigated using an optimized solid-phase extraction pre-treatment and an Agilent 6410B tandem triple-quadrupole liquid chromatography–mass spectrometer for antibiotic detection. The results show that antibiotics were widely present in the water bodies of the Yellow River Estuary, with 14 antibiotics detected to varying degrees, including a high detection rate for lincomycin hydrochloride. Farming wastewater and domestic sewage were the primary sources of antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary. The distribution characteristics of antibiotics in the study area were linked to the development of farming and social activities. The ecological risk evaluation of 14 antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary watershed showed that clarithromycin and doxycycline hydrochloride were present at medium-risk levels, and lincomycin hydrochloride, sulfamethoxazole, methomyl, oxifloxacin, enrofloxacin, sulfadiazine, roxithromycin, sulfapyridine, sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin were present at low-risk levels in the samples collected from water bodies of the Yellow River Estuary. This study provides novel, beneficial information for the assessment of the ecological risk presented by antibiotics in the Yellow River Estuary water bodies and provides a scientific basis for future antibiotic pollution control in the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in pollution associated with antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban water systems, threatening the public health and the ecological security. In this study, the patterns of the diversity and abundance of the antibiotics and ARGs in a typical city (Kunming, China) were analyzed by monitoring their presence in the tap water, the land block sewage discharge units, the sewage pipes, the influent of WWTP, the effluent of WWTP, and the urban river channel. The results showed that although the average concentration of total antibiotics in tap water was 10 ng/L, the concentrations reached hundreds or even thousands of ng/L in all the other sections, indicating antibiotics entering water system through human or pets discharge. The relative abundances of ARG copies to 16S rRNA gene copies in the effluent of WWTP, the urban river channel which was the downstream of WWTP were higher than those of the sewage pipes, increasing risk of ARG transfer after treatment by WWTP. In general, the relative abundance of ARGs in spring was higher than that in winter. There was no significant correlation between antibiotics concentrations and their corresponding ARGs, except for a correlation between tetracyclines and tet-resistance genes. Due to the existence of transposases, the urban water system is exposed to a widespread risk of horizontal transfer of ARGs.
Occurrence, Comparison and Priority Identification of Antibiotics in Surface Water and Sediment in Urbanized River: A Case Study of Suzhou Creek in Shanghai

Abstract:Antibiotics in water have attracted increasing attention due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Most previous studies have focused on heavily polluted environments, while ignoring urbanized rivers with high population density. Taking Suzhou Creek in Shanghai as an example, this study attempted to explore the antibiotic pollution characteristics of typical urbanized rivers. Further, it screened out priority antibiotics so as to provide reference for the regular monitoring of antibiotics in urban surface water in the study’s later stage. Four classes of 27 antibiotics in surface water samples and sediment samples were detected and analyzed by SPE-UPLC-MS/MS under both wet season and dry season. Results demonstrate that the total amount of antibiotics detected reached 1936.9 ng/L and 337.3 ng/g in water samples and sediment samples, respectively. Through Pearson correlation analysis, it can be shown that there is a very significant correlation between a variety of antibiotics in water and sediment. The results of ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) show that certain antibiotics presented high and medium risk to the surrounding ecosystem. Finally, the priority antibiotics selected by optimized priority screening method were EM, SPD, CLR and RTM. Therefore, we have proven that the antibiotics being discharged in urbanized rivers show different types of antibiotics, while presenting a toxicological risk to certain species.

Abstract:The extensive utilization of antibiotics has resulted in their frequent detection, contributing to an increased abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in rivers and posing a significant threat to environmental health. Particulate matter plays a crucial role as the primary carrier of various pollutants in river ecosystem. Its physicochemical properties and processes of sedimentation and re-suspension can influence the migration and transformation of antibiotics, yet the mechanisms of this impact remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the distribution characteristics at the micro-scale of particles in the upstream plain river network of the Taihu basin and the adsorption behaviors of antibiotics in particulate matter. The results revealed that particles were predominantly in the size range of 30 to 150 μm in the river network and highest total antibiotic concentrations in 0 to 10 μm particle size fractions. Adsorption experiments also confirmed that the smaller the suspended particle size, the stronger the adsorption capacity for antibiotics. Spatially, both the average particle size and total antibiotic concentrations were lower downstream than upstream. The distribution mechanism of antibiotic in river network sediments was significantly influenced by frequent resuspension and settling of fine particles with a stronger capacity to adsorb antibiotics under hydrodynamic conditions. This ultimately facilitated the release of antibiotics from sediment into the water, resulting in lower antibiotic concentrations in downstream sediments relative to upstream These findings suggest that fine particles serve as the primary carriers of antibiotics, and their sorting and transport processes can significantly influence the distribution of antibiotics in water-sediment systems. This study enhances our understanding of the migration mechanisms of antibiotics in river networks and will prove beneficial for the development of management strategies aimed at controlling antibiotic dissemination.

Abstract:The microbial communities in freshwater have raised concerns about the ecosystem and human health. Many ecological environmental problems have been found in urban river because of the unreasonable use and long-term wastewater discharge. In this study, we explored the bacterial community composition, abundance of 14 antibiotics and 21 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and water environment features in seven water samples and seven sediment samples from Ba River in Xi'an, China. Results showed Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in all samples, and sediment samples had a higher bacterial diversity and richness than it in water. Bacterial communities of site 5 and 6 were clustered in discrepant patterns compared to those at remaining sites from other samples. It might be influenced by nutrients, heavy metals and antibiotics. Antibiotics concentrations ranged from 1.26 to 1.61 × 103 ng L-1 in water samples and 1.55 to 4.05 × 102 μg kg-1 in sediment samples. Sulfamerazine (SM1) and erythromycin (ERY) were the chief antibiotics in water samples, while the level of oxytetracycline (OTC) and cefazolin (CFZ) were higher in sediment samples. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that trimethoprim (TMP) was significantly related to Acinetobacter in W6, and that SM1 and OTC had positive correlation with Arcobacter in W5. The tetC, blaTEM , ermF and sul1 had higher pollution abundance ranging from 10-4 to 100 copies/16S rRNA gene copies in all samples. Significant correlations were observed between ARGs and matching antibiotics, suggesting that antibiotics can pose the selective pressure on ARGs in this river. In summary, these finding might provide some new data to the limited information available on the bacterial community characteristics, abundance of antibiotics and ARGs in urban river of China.

Abstract:Antibiotics have been widely detected in bay ecosystems, yet little is known regarding their distribution, composition, sources, ecological and human health risks at the regional scale. We developed a systematic framework to mine data from existing publications and compiled an antibiotic concentration-based dataset containing 439 samples from 30 bays, and compared antibiotics across bays and matrices (water, sediment, and biota). Antibiotic concentrations varied considerably between bays, with hotspots occurring in East Asia. The main categories of antibiotics in waters included sulfonamide and macrolide, while tetracycline, quinolone, and macrolide antibiotics were prevalent in sediments. The main sources of antibiotics in bays included sewage treatment plant effluent, domestic sewage, agriculture runoff, and discharges from mariculture activities. Antibiotics with high ecological risks mainly included sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin, and oxytetracycline. Erythromycin posed a considerable risk to human health, and the human health risks presented by other antibiotics were negligible. Regional variations of concentrations correspond to the uneven geographic consumption of antibiotics and their removal rate during wastewater treatment. Differences in antibiotics' composition between matrices are associated mainly with the physicochemical properties of antibiotics (e.g., molecular structure, solubility, and stability) and the content of total organic carbon, metal ions, chlorophyll a, and clay minerals in the sediments. To reduce the ecological and human health implications, priority should be given to the removal of erythromycin, sulfamethoxazole, oxytetracycline, and clarithromycin, with a special focus on their treatment in the Asian bay areas.

Abstract:The identification and source tracing of antibiotic contaminants in rivers has become a research hotspot. In this study, surface water samples were collected from 67 locations in the Yangtze River Basin, China. The detection rate, concentration, and distribution characteristics of various antibiotics in these water samples were analyzed. Based on these data, the sources of these antibiotics were traced and correlated with factors such as urban population size, industrial activity, and wastewater treatment efficiency within the sampling area. A total of 57 antibiotics were detected in the Yangtze River, with detection rates of roxithromycin, 1,7-dimethylxanthine (1,7-DTX), and florfenicol (FF) exceeding 80%. The average total concentration of antibiotics was significantly higher in upstream regions (525.4 ng/L) compared with middle regions (89.5 ng/L) and downstream regions (246.6 ng/L). Furthermore, antibiotic concentrations positively correlated with population density and economic development (R = 0.857, p < 0.05). Based on ecological risk assessment and priority indexes, enoxacin, roxithromycin, sarafloxacin, and clarithromycin (CLR) posed medium risks. This research provides scientific guidance for the periodic monitoring and regulation of antibiotic contaminants in river ecosystems.

Abstract:The antibiotic distributions, partitioning, and migration pathways in river basins have withdrawn great attention in the past decades. This study investigates 26 antibiotics of five classifications in surface water and sediment samples at 23 sites in Fenhe River, a typical tributary of Yellow River. There are 21 antibiotics found in the water samples at the concentration from 113.8 to 1106.0 ng/L, in the decreasing order of SAs > QNs > MLs > TCs > CAs. Fifteen antibiotics were detected in the sediment at the concentrations from 25.11 to 73.22 μg/kg following the decreasing order of SAs > MLs > TCs > QNs > CAs. The antibiotic concentrations vary greatly in surface water, generally lower in upstream and in reservoirs, and reaching highest in the midstream of the Fenhe River after passing Taiyuan and Jinzhong, and then lower again in the downstream. The antibiotic concentrations in sediment have a less variation in the entire river basin, but become high in the downstream. The results show the water-sediment partitioning coefficients of antibiotics generally were lower than those in other areas, having a migration path from the water to suspended solids, and then accumulated in sediment. The water-sediment partitioning coefficients also vary across the basin. The water-sediment partitioning coefficients of sulfacetamide and tetracycline are higher than the water-sediment partitioning coefficients of other antibiotics, with less variation across the basin, the water-sediment partitioning coefficients of azithromycin, enrofloxacin, and roxithromycin are low in the midstream of the river, and high at the river source and downstream. The water-sediment partitioning coefficients are significantly affected by the pH of sediment and the particle size of sediment. The prediction models of water-sediment partitioning coefficients for antibiotics are constructed with the selected effecting factors. The simulation values of antibiotics except chlortetracycline and erythromycin are highly consistent with the observed values, indicating that the prediction model is reliable.
