Abstract:The porous carbon blacks rationally designed by a facile yet efficient NH3 thermal etching route have been investigated as anode materials in an ether-based electrolyte for sodium-ion batteries. The as-synthesized CBN35 carbon black with a 35% weight loss after NH3 thermal etching exhibited a large specific charge capacity of 352 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and a superior rate capability of 101 mAh g−1 at 16000 mA g−1, due to its highest microporosity, an appropriate surface area, a desirable microstructure, and a promising hybrid intercalation mechanism. Impressively, even cycled at 1600 mA g−1 over 3200 cycles, an outstanding reversible capacity of 103 mAh g−1 with a negligible 0.0162% capacity loss per cycle can still be achieved. Based on the multimodal characterizations including the structural probes of phase evolution for carbon materials, the electrochemical techniques, and the surface-sensitive XAS measurements, the exceptional electrochemical properties should stem from several merits of modified carbon black system. While the particular microporous structure provides relatively more accessible sodium storage sites, a novel hybrid intercalation mechanism in ether-based electrolyte would incorporate the sodium ion insertion into the disordered structure with the solvated sodium ion species co-intercalation into the graphitic phase. In addition to the diffusion-controlled redox reactions, the noticeable surface-induced pseudocapacitive reactions also significantly contribute to the charge storage upon sodiation and guarantee the rapid migrations of sodium ions/solvated compounds. This system further features a controlled emergence of a robust but thin solid electrolyte interphase layer, which could suppress the side reactions of active electrode with reactive electrolyte, maintain the fragile porous structure upon cycling, and facilitate the migrations of sodium ions and solvated sodium ion compounds.

Abstract:Currently, the specific capacity and cycling performance of various MoS2/carbon-based anode materials for Na-ion storage are far from satisfactory due to the insufficient structural stability of the electrode, incomplete protection of MoS2 by carbon, difficult access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, as well as inactivity of the adopted carbon matrix. To address these issues, this work presents the rational design and synthesis of 3D interconnected and hollow nanocables composed of multiwalled carbon@MoS2@carbon. In this architecture, (i) the 3D nanoweb-like structure brings about excellent mechanical property of the electrode, (ii) the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets are sandwiched between and doubly protected by two layers of porous carbon, (iii) the hollow structure of the primary nanofibers facilitates the access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, (iv) the porous and nitrogen-doping properties of the two carbon materials lead to synergistic Na-storage of carbon and MoS2. As a result, this hybrid material as the anode material of Na-ion battery exhibits fast chargetransfer reaction, high utilization efficiency, and ultrastability. Outstanding reversible capacity (1045 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate behavior (817 mAh g(-1) at 7000 mA g(-1)), and good cycling performance (747 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 700 mA g(-1)) are obtained.

Abstract:The carbon coating strategies, ameliorating structure instability and reaction kinetics of silicon anodes upon lithiation/delithiation, have been chronically plagued by an electrochemical contradiction between a high specific capacity from a high silicon content and a long cycle life from a high carbon content. Herein, the carbon coating layers and void structures for silicon/carbon composites were simultaneously manipulated through a precisely grown Al2O3 template, which induced a controllable polydopamine polymerization through its mild interfacial interaction with Tris-buffer solution and created abundant void spaces by its residual parts. Particularly, the as-optimized silicon/carbon composite with an ultrahigh silicon content of 89.3 wt% could demonstrate a large initial reversible capacity of 2583 mAh g-1 with an 82.1 % coulombic efficiency at 200 mA g-1, a remarkable cycling durability of 601 mAh g-1 after 990 cycles at 2000 mA g-1, and an excellent rate capability of 887 mAh g-1 at 4000 mA g-1. The uniform void structures could maintain the structural stability/integrity of silicon, boost reaction kinetics across electrode/electrolyte interfaces, and suppress the uncontrollable formation/evolution of solid electrolyte interphases upon cycling. This novel research on synchronously regulating carbon layers and void structures in silicon/carbon composites would enlighten a rational development of highcapacity and long-life silicon anodes.

Abstract:N‐doped carbon with tailored microstructure and expanded interlayer spacing is constructed by the structural engineering design for the self‐assembly of MCA molecules on the anthracite surface through hydrogen bonding, delivering a 3D conductive network and flexible framework. DFT calculations demonstrate that the microporous structure formed by the appropriate angle of 8° enhances the migration and storage of sodium ions. Carbon material has emerged as a highly promising anode for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) due to its abundance of resources, cost‐effectiveness, and high carbon yield. This work elaborately designs the precursor structure for the self‐assembly of melamine‐cyanuric acid on the anthracite surface through hydrogen bonding, and successfully constructs N‐doped carbon with tailored microstructure and expanded interlayer spacing. Serving as anode for SIBs, the optimized sample delivers high specific capacity (371.3 mAh g−1 at 0.05 A g−1), superior rate capability (295.8 mAh g−1 at 10.0 A g−1), and excellent ultra‐long cycling performance (the retention of 91.5% after 3000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1). The systematic investigations reveal the enhancement of sodium‐ion storage in the low‐voltage plateau region involving the interlayer intercalation coupled with nanopores filling. It is discovered that the microporous structure formed by the appropriate graphite sheet angle influences the migration and storage of sodium ions. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the adsorption capacity for sodium ion is enhanced and the migration energy barrier perpendicular to the graphite layer is reduced at the appropriate angle of 8°. This study provides novel insights into the sodium‐ion storage mechanism, offering guidance for the better design of anthracite‐based carbon anode with superior performance.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMS) hold great promise as anode materials for Li + /Na + storage. However, their practical application still faces several challenges, such as inadequate electrical conductivity, substantial volume changes and a propensity for agglomeration. To tackle these challenges, a 3D composite structure composed of graphene nanosheets crosslinked core−shell FeS 2 @N, S co−doped porous carbon (FeS 2 @NSC/GNs) is created by combining self−template polymerization with the graphene encapsulation technique. Systematic characterization and analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of the self−template polymerization strategy in generating a porous core−shell structure, which facilitates the uniform dispersion and optimal contact of the FeS 2 core within the carbon shell. Concurrently, the integration of graphene, alongside the porous carbon shell, introduces a sophisticated dual−protection mechanism against volume expansion and undesirable FeS 2 aggregation. Furthermore, the resulting 3D architecture enables efficient electron/ion transport and provides abundant sites for Li + /Na + storage. Leveraging these inherent benefits, the FeS 2 @NSC/GNs composite exhibits significantly improved lithium/sodium storage performance in comparison to the counterparts. Evidently, our proposed approach offers valuable guidance for the construction of advanced anodes for lithium/sodium−ion batteries.

Interfacial Engineering of MoS2/V2O3@C-rGO Composites with Pseudocapacitance-Enhanced Li/Na-Ion Storage Kinetics

Abstract:Molybdenum sulfide has been widely investigated as a prospective anode material for Li+/Na+ storage because of its unique layered structure and high theoretical capacity. However, the enormous volume variation and poor conductivity limit the development of molybdenum sulfide. The rational design of a heterogeneous interface is of great importance to improve the structure stability and electrical conductivity of electrode materials. Herein, a high-temperature mixing method is implemented in the hydrothermal process to synthesize the hybrid structure of MoS2/V2O3@carbon-graphene (MoS2/V2O3@C-rGO). The MoS2/V2O3@C-rGO composites exhibit superior Li+/Na+ storage performance due to the construction of the interface between the MoS2 and V2O3 components and the introduction of carbon materials, delivering a prominent reversible capacity of 564 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 600 cycles for lithium-ion batteries and 376.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 450 cycles for sodium-ion batteries. Theoretical calculations confirm that the construction of the interface between the MoS2 and V2O3 components can accelerate the reaction kinetics and enhance the charge-ionic transport of molybdenum sulfide. The results illustrate that interfacial engineering may be an effective guide to obtain high-performance electrode materials for Li+/Na+ storage.

Abstract:In the realm of scalable fabrication of anodes through ball-milling, ensuring high electrochemical performance and robust cycling stability anodes for sodium-ion batteries is paramount but presents a formidable hurdle. In pursuit of these goals, a distinctive hybrid composite distinguished by its intricate multiphase composition have devised. This entails the integration of innovative NiSbS/NiSb/NiS nanomaterials onto exfoliated graphite nanosheets (Ni-Sb-S/GN) via a straightforward technique. Analyses indicates the interplay between graphite nanosheets and the hybrid Ni-Sb-S, in conjunction with the discharge byproducts of Na2S, substantially augment the stability and Na-ion diffusion kinetics of the Ni-Sb-S/GN anode. The novel Ni-Sb-S/GN exhibits markedly superior electrochemical performance in comparison to its Ni-Sb-S counterpart. Specifically, Ni-Sb-S/GN achieves a reversible capacity of 238.7 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 post 300 cycles, remains notable capacities of 200 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles under 1 A g-1, respectively, translating to high capacity retention rates of 83.8% from the 2nd cycle. This contribution presents a novel avenue for the exploitation of advanced multiphase anodes exhibiting superior capacity, rate capability, and cycling durability.

Abstract:Building a stable and controllable interlayer structure is the key to improving the sodium storage cycling stability and rate performance of two‐dimensional anode materials. This study explored the rich functional groups in bacterial cellulose culture medium in the way of biological self‐assembly. Mo precursors were used to produce chemical bond in bacterial cellulose culture medium, and intercalation groups are introduced to achieve MoS2 localized nucleation and in situ localized construction of carbon intercalation stable interlaminar structure, thus improving ion transport dynamics and cycle stability. In order to avoid structural irreversibility of MoS2 at low potential, an extended voltage window of 1.5‐4 V was selected for lithium/sodium intercalation testing. It was found that there was a significant improvement in sodium storage capacity and stability. During the electrochemical cycling process, in‐situ Raman testing revealed that the structure of MoS2 was completely reversible, and the intensity changes of MoS2 characteristic peaks showed in‐plane vibration without involving interlayer bonding fracture. Moreover, after the lithium sodium was removed from the intercalation C@MoS2 all structures have good retention.

Abstract:Triterpenic acids are widespread in plants and have multiplicity of biological properties. Unfortunately the method for accurate analysis of these compounds remains poorly investigated. This study proposed a highly sensitive and selective precolumn derivatization method for accurate determination of five triterpenic acids (betulinic acid, betulonic acid, maslinic acid, ursolic acid and oleanolic acid) in fruits using acridone-9-ethyl-p-toluenesulfonate (AETS) as fluorescent labeling reagent by HPLC with fluorescence detection (FLD). Response surface methodology was employed to optimize the derivatization reaction, ensuring the sufficient labeling of the analyzed components. The rapid separation of five triterpenic acids could be achieved in as little as 16 min. This developed method offered the exciting detection limits of 1.68-2.04 ng/mL. When applied to several popular fruits in China, it revealed satisfactory applicability and reproducibility. This developed method also exhibits powerful potential for accurate detection of triterpenic acids from other foodstuffs and nature products.

Abstract:Tin-based chalcogenides have attracted tremendous attention as an anode material for sodium storage owing to their unique structure and high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, the large volume change and poor conductivity lead to sluggish reaction kinetics and poor cycling performance. Herein, SnS0.5Se0.5 nanoparticles coupled with N/S/Se triple-doped carbon nanofibers (SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C) are designed and synthesized through electrospinning and annealing process. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of SnS0.5Se0.5 and NSSe-C, the SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C nanofibers exhibit a high reversible capacity and ultralong cycle life at higher current density for sodium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the sodium storage mechanism and electrochemical reaction kinetics of the SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C composite are characterized by the in-situ measurements. The theoretical calculations further reveal the structural advantages of SnS0.5Se0.5@NSSe-C composite, which exhibits a high adsorption energy of Na+. This work can provide a novel idea for the synthesis of ternary tin-based chalcogenides and is beneficial for the investigation of their reaction kinetics.

Three-dimensional porous N-doped graphite carbon with embedded CoS2 nanoparticles as advanced anode for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:To achieve both high capacity and long cycling stability in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), the structural optimizations of anode materials should take into considerations of the reaction kinetics, the insertion/extraction processes of Na+, and the structural stability of anodes. In this study, the growth of CoS2 nanoparticles on N-doped graphite carbon three-dimensional nano-skeleton (CoS2/NGC) is designed to increase the active sites for sodium storage, to provide high ionic/electrical conductivity, and to alleviate the volume swelling and reduce Na+ diffusion energy barrier. As employed as anode materials of SIB, CoS2/NGC shows a great rate capability, affording an initial capacity of 660 mAh g−1, and maintaining a coulombic efficiency of 99.7% even after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1. The cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrate that the main contribution of the capacity is from the capacitive charge-storage. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the advantageous Na+ storage kinetics of the CoS2/NGC electrode is attributed to its low Na+ adsorption energy of −2.21 eV and low Na+ diffusion barrier of 0.113 eV. This systematic study paves a way for the efficient design of metal sulfides anodes for SIB, which is conducive to develop battery systems with remarkable electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Two types of hard carbon materials with distinct microstructures are synthesized and used as models to investigate sodium storage mechanisms in the low potential plateau region. With the assistance of electrochemical and spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculations, the "adsorption‐intercalation/filling" hybrid mechanism is proposed to achieve an overall understanding of the sodium storage behaviors in different hard carbon materials. Hard carbon has the potential to serve as a high‐capacity anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), however, its Na+ storage mechanism, particularly on the low potential plateau, remains controversial. To overcome this issue, two types of hard carbons with different microstructures are employed and the relationship between the microstructures and Na+ storage behaviors is evaluated. By the combination of operando X‐ray diffraction, ex situ Raman spectroscopy, NMR, and theoretical calculation, it is found that the sodium storage capacities of the hard carbons in the low potential plateau region contain the concurrent contributions from both interlayer intercalation and micropores filling, and the ratio of the two contributors greatly depends on the microstructure of hard carbon materials. Moreover, an electrochemical pointer (potential inflection point at the end of the discharge curve) is found to distinguish the dominance of interlayer intercalation and the micropores filling processes of sodium ions in the low potential plateau region. Based on this new finding, a microstructure‐dependent mechanism ("adsorption‐intercalation/filling" hybrid mechanism) is proposed to achieve an overall understanding of the sodium storage behaviors in different hard carbon materials, which may provide deep insight into the rational design of hard carbon structures as high‐performance anode materials for advanced SIBs.

Unraveling the Influence of Sb Dopant to Reversible Capacity and Initial Coulombic Efficiency of SnO2-graphene As Anodes for Sodium Storage

Abstract:Sodium storage materials based on conversion and alloying reactions often suffer from low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). Most of literature shows that the SnO2-based anode commonly reveals an ICE below 50 %, and the reasons could be attributed to the partial reversibility in conversion reaction by forming an intermediate phase. This work focuses on using an element doping strategy to suppress the formation of an inert intermediate phase and improves the ICE for SnO2-based anodes in sodium storage applications. Mechanisms of performance enhancement are also carefully investigated. The 3 % Sb doped sample is demonstrated with enhanced electrochemical performance. Specifically, it delivers an initial discharge capacity of 847 mAh g 1 at 50 mA g(-1), combining an average enhanced ICE of 57.1 % (37.8 % for the undoped comparison), and it also presents a good rate performance of 206 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 1600 mA g(-1). It is found that the Sb dopant reduces the specific capacity of active materials, but it enhances reaction reversibility; improves the overall conductivity of active materials, but does not directly enhance the Na+ diffusion coefficient; helps to restrain the formation of inert phase (the SnO phase) in sodium storage reactions to improve reversibility and initial Coulombic efficiency. Therefore, reversible capacities and initial Coulombic efficiencies can be effectively enhanced after introducing the Sb dopant at an optimized percentage. This work could provide valuable inspiration for designing conversion and alloying-type anodes for sodium storage applications via ion doping methods.
High-pressure-assisted Design of Porous Topological Semimetal Carbon for Li-ion Battery Anode with High-Rate Performance

Abstract:It has been a great challenge to develop a high-rate anode material with high-capacity, fast Li-ions diffusion and long cycling life going beyond the commercially used graphite in Li-ion battery. Here for the first time we propose a strategy combined high-pressure synthesis method with the global structure search to find a topological semimetal porous carbon as the desired anode. Our crystal-structure searching shows that we can obtain the ground state of an orthorhombic phase LiC6 with regular pores at 30 GPa, and when the Li atoms are removed, the resulting carbon structure is the recently predicted interlocked graphene network (IGN) that is a topological semimetal with an intrinsic high electronic conductivity. Based on the state-of-the-art first-principles calculations, we further find that the Li-ion migration energy barrier in the IGN is extremely low and the estimated diffusion coefficient can reach a magnitude of 10(-4) cm(2)/s at both low and high Li concentrations, which is three orders of magnitude larger than that of graphite anode. Moreover, the volume changes during the Li insertion and deinsertion are smaller than 3.2%, while the theoretical specific capacity is the same as that of graphite anode. Our studies not only suggest a practical way of synthesizing the topological semimetal carbon but also propose a new anode material for Li-ion battery.
Isotropic Structure and Polymer Interface Intensified Lithium-Ion Transmission in Spherical Graphite Tailings/Coke Composite Anode

Abstract:Spherical graphite tailings (SGT) as the anode electrode for a lithium-ion battery not only improves the utilization value of SGT as solid waste, but also demonstrates the cleaner production of natural flake graphite (NG) compared with artificial graphite. However, SGT anodes present issues regarding rate performance and cycle stability due to the anisotropy structure and the instability of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI). In this work, a composite anode with isotropic structure was prepared by granulation of high-sulfur coal (HSC) and SGT, while an artificial SEI was prepared utilizing polyether amine/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PEA/PVP) crosslinked polymer. Results showed that the coke from HSC pyrolysis enhanced the isotropy of the composite anode and improved its rate performance. Compared with SGT, the capacity retention rate of the sample (OSGT-50%OHSC) after oxidation - pyrolysis at a high current density of 5.0 A g-1 increased from 7.2% to 25.8%. Additionally, the PEA/PVP artificial SEI strengthened the cycle stability of the anode. After 1000 cycles, the capacity retention rate increased from 22.5% to 70.3%. The artificial SEI effectively avoided direct contact between the anode and the electrolyte, increasing the initial coulombic efficiency from 70.3% to 77.1%.

Abstract:Construction of a suitable hybrid structure has been considered an important approach to address the defects of metal sulfide anode materials. V3S4 nanosheets anchored on an N, S co-coped graphene (VS/NSG) aerogel were successfully fabricated by an efficient self-assembled strategy. During the heat treatment process, decomposition, sulfuration and N, S co-doping occurred. This hybrid structure was not only endowed with an enhanced capability to buffer the volume expansion, but also improved electron conductivity as a result of the conductive network that had been constructed. The dominating pseudocapacitive contribution (57.78% at 1 mV s−1) enhanced the electrochemical performance effectively. When serving as anode material for lithium ion batteries, VS/NSG exhibits excellent lithium storage properties, including high rate capacity (480 and 330 mAh g−1 at 5 and 10 A g−1, respectively) and stable cyclic performance (692 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles at 2 A g−1).

Abstract:Over the years, transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have attracted ample attention from researchers on account of their high theoretical capacity, through which they show great potential for use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Nevertheless, there are some serious obstacles (particle pulverization and large volume change) still in the way to achieving satisfactory cycling performance and rate property. Here, we report the preparation of a N, S co-doped carbon nanotube hollow architecture confining CoS2 (CoS2/NSCNHF) derived from bimetal-organic-frameworks. The rationally designed structure possesses excellent Li+/Na+ storage performances. Further investigation of the Li+/Na+ storage behavior indicated the presence of a partial pseudocapacitive contribution, facilitating the fast Li+/Na+ interaction/extraction process and thus giving it superb electrochemical property. This work may represent an important step forward in the fabrication of MOF-derived hierarchical hybrids combined with a hollow structure and TMCs to help such TMCs achieve their potential in energy storage systems.

Abstract:Chromium-based transition metal sulfide such as chromium hemi trisulfide (Cr2S3) gradually emerges as a potential lithium-ion host material considering its relatively large specific capacity along with low cost advantage. However, some excruciating issues such as serious particle aggregation, large volume expansion and insufficient inherent conductivity always result in an inferior Li-storage behavior such as low reversible capacity, limited cycling life and poor high-rate performance. Rational structure design and effective combination with suitable component are crucial to achieve superior Li-storage performance. Herein, a heterostructured composite with small Cr2S3 nanosheets embedded into phenanthroline-derived N-doped porous carbon skeleton (Cr2S3/NC) has been synthesized through a calcination and sulfuration route. In as-prepared Cr2S3/NC composite, Cr2S3 nanosheets are well confined by carbon matrix, which is conductive to an effective suppression on aggregation and volume change. Meanwhile, porous conductive carbon framework supplies desirable expressway for fast electron delivery and reduces the distance for lithium ions diffusion. Consequently, the Cr2S3/NC anode delivers a remarkably elevated Li-storage performance.

Coal-Based Semicoke-Derived Carbon Anode Materials with Tunable Microcrystalline Structure for Fast Lithium-Ion Storage

Abstract:Fast charging capability is highly desired for new generation lithium-ion batteries used in consumer-grade electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, currently used anodes suffer from sluggish ion kinetics due to limited interlayer distance. Herein, the coal-based semicoke was chosen as precursor to prepare cost-effective carbon anodes with high-rate performance through a facile pyrolytic strategy. The evolution of microstructure and its effect on electrochemical performance are entirely studied. The results show that large number of short-ordered defective structures are generated due to the occurrence of turbostatic-like structures when pyrolyzed at 900 °C, which are propitious to large interlayer distance and developed porous structure. High accessible surface area and large interlayer spacing with short-ordered defective domains endow the sample treated at 900 °C under argon (A900) with accelerated ion dynamics and enhanced ion adsorption dominated surface-induced capacitive processes. As a result, A900 delivers high capacity (331.1 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1) and long life expectancy (94.8% after 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1) as well as good rate capability (153.2 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1). This work opens a scalable avenue to fabricating cost-effective, high-rate, and long cycling life carbon anodes.
