Abstract:The cosmetic surgery conjecture is a longstanding conjecture in 3-manifold theory. We present a theorem about exceptional cosmetic surgery for homology spheres. Along the way we prove that if the surgery is not a small Seifert Z / 2 Z -homology sphere or a toroidal irreducible non-Seifert surgery then there is at most one pair of exceptional truly cosmetic slope. We also prove that toroidal truly cosmetic surgeries on integer homology spheres must be integer homology spheres.

Abstract:A pair of surgeries on a knot is chirally cosmetic if they result in homeomorphic manifolds with opposite orientations. We find new obstructions to the existence of such surgeries coming from Heegaard Floer homology; in particular, we make use of immersed curve formulations of knot Floer homology and the corresponding surgery formula. As an application, we completely classify chirallly cosmetic surgeries on odd alternating pretzel knots, and we rule out such surgeries for a large class of Whitehead doubles. Furthermore, we rule out cosmetic surgeries for L-space knots along slopes with opposite signs.

Recent work of Hanselman [5] uses Heegaard Floer homology to obtainnew obstructions for the existence of such surgeries. In this work, we applythose obstructions to show that (nontrivial) knots which arise as the closure of a3-stranded braid do not admit any purely cosmetic surgeries.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a non-trivial knot in $S^3$, and let $r$ and $r'$ be two distinct rational numbers of same sign, allowing $r$ to be infinite; we prove that there is no orientation-preserving homeomorphism between the manifolds $S^3_r(K)$ and $S^3_{r'}(K)$. We further generalize this uniqueness result to knots in arbitrary integral homology L-spaces.

Abstract:If a knot $K$ in $S^3$ admits a pair of truly cosmetic surgeries, we show that the surgery slopes are either $\pm 2$ or $\pm 1/q$ for some value of $q$ that is explicitly determined by the knot Floer homology of $K$. Moreover, in the former case the genus of $K$ must be two, and in the latter case there is bound relating $q$ to the genus and the Heegaard Floer thickness of $K$. As a consequence, we show that the cosmetic crossing conjecture holds for alternating knots (or more generally, Heegaard Floer thin knots) with genus not equal to two. We also show that the conjecture holds for any knot $K$ for which each prime summand of $K$ has at most 16 crossings; our techniques rule out cosmetic surgeries in this setting except for slopes $\pm 1$ and $\pm 2$ on a small number of knots, and these remaining examples can be checked by comparing hyperbolic invariants. These results make use of the surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology, which has already proved to be a powerful tool for obstructing cosmetic surgeries; we get stronger obstructions than previously known by considering the full graded theory. We make use of a new graphical interpretation of knot Floer homology and the surgery formula in terms of immersed curves, which makes the grading information we need easier to access.

Abstract:By considering non-orientable surfaces in the surgered manifolds, we show that the 10/3- and -10/3-Dehn surgeries on the 2-bridge knot $9_{27} = S(49,19)$ are not cosmetic, i.e., they give mutually non-homeomorphic manifolds. The knot is unknown to have no cosmetic surgeries by previously known results; in particular, by using the Casson invariant and the Heegaard Floer homology.

Abstract:This paper concerns the truly or purely cosmetic surgery conjecture. We give a survey on exceptional surgeries and cosmetic surgeries. We prove that the slope of an exceptional truly cosmetic surgery on a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ must be $\pm 1$ and the surgery must be toroidal but not Seifert fibred. As consequence we show that there are no exceptional truly cosmetic surgeries on certain types of hyperbolic knot in $S^3$. We also give some properties of Heegaard Floer correction terms and torsion invariants for exceptional cosmetic surgeries on $S^3$.

Abstract:We study cosmetic contact surgeries along transverse knots in the standard contact 3-sphere, i.e. contact surgeries that yield again the standard contact 3-sphere. The main result is that we can exclude non-trivial cosmetic contact surgeries along all transverse knots not isotopic to the transverse unknot with self-linking number -1. As a corollary it follows that every transverse knot in the standard contact 3-sphere is determined by the contactomorphism type of its exteriors. Moreover, we give counterexamples to this for transverse links in the standard contact 3-sphere.

Abstract:This paper employs knot invariants and results from hyperbolic geometry to develop a practical procedure for checking the cosmetic surgery conjecture on any given one-cusped manifold. This procedure has been used to establish the following computational results. First, we verify that all knots up to 19 crossings, and all one-cusped 3-manifolds in the SnapPy census, do not admit any purely cosmetic surgeries. Second, we check that a hyperbolic knot with at most 15 crossings only admits chirally cosmetic surgeries when the knot itself is amphicheiral. Third, we enumerate all knots up to 13 crossings that share a common Dehn fillings with the figure-8 knot. The code that verifies these results is publicly available on GitHub.

Abstract:By examining the homology groups of a 4-manifold associated to an integral surgery on a knot $K$ in a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ yielding a rational homology 3-sphere $Y^*$ with surgery dual knot $K^*$, we show that the subgroups generated by $[K]$ and $[K^*]$ in $H_1(Y)$ and $H_1(Y^*)$, respectively, have co-prime orders. We obtain an immediate corollary that, in conjunction with an argument of Lidman and Moore, proves the cosmetic crossing conjecture for knots whose branched double covers are Heegaard Floer L-spaces.

Abstract:The cosmetic surgery conjecture predicts that for a non-trivial knot in the three-sphere, performing two different Dehn surgeries results in distinct oriented three-manifolds. Hanselman reduced the problem to $\pm 2$ or $\pm 1/n$-surgeries being the only possible cosmetic surgeries. We remove the case of $\pm 1/n$-surgeries using the Chern-Simons filtration on Floer's original irreducible-only instanton homology, reducing the conjecture to the case of $\pm 2$-surgery on genus $2$ knots with trivial Alexander polynomial. Along the way, we establish a new surgery relationship for Floer's instanton homology and prove some similar results for surgeries on knots in $S^2 \times S^1$.

Abstract:Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called cosmetic if they yield homeomorphic three-manifolds. We show for a certain family of null-homologous knots in any closed orientable three-manifold, if the knot admits cosmetic surgeries with a pair of positive surgery coefficients, then the coefficients are both greater than $1$. In addition, for this family of knots, we show that $1/q$ Dehn surgery for $q$ at least $2$ is not homeomorphic to the original three-manifold. The proofs of these results use the mapping cone formula for the Heegaard Floer homology of Dehn surgery in terms of the knot Floer homology of the knot; we provide a new proof of this formula for integer surgeries in $\text{Spin}^c$ structures with nontorsion first Chern class.

Abstract:By estimating the Turaev genus or the dealternation number, which leads to an estimate of knot floer thickness, in terms of the genus and the braid index, we show that a knot $K$ in $S^{3}$ does not admit purely cosmetic surgery whenever $g(K)\geq \frac{3}{2}b(K)$, where $g(K)$ and $b(K)$ denotes the genus and the braid index, respectively. In particular, this establishes a finiteness of purely cosmetic surgeries; for fixed $b$, all but finitely many knots with braid index $b$ satisfies the cosmetic surgery conjecture.

Abstract:We consider the cosmetic surgery problem for two-bridge knots in the 3-sphere. We first verify by using previously known results that all the two-bridge knots of at most $9$ crossings admit no purely cosmetic surgery pairs except for the knot $9_{27}$. Then we show that any two-bridge knot corresponding to the continued fraction $[0, 2x, 2, -2x, 2x, 2, -2x]$ for a positive integer $x$ admits no cosmetic surgery pairs yielding homology 3-spheres, where $9_{27}$ appears when $x = 1$. Our advantage to prove this is using the $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ Casson invariant.

Abstract:We show that there are no distance one surgeries on non-null-homologous knots in $M$ that yield $-M$ ($M$ with opposite orientation) if $M$ is a 3-manifold obtained by a Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^{3}$, such that the order of its first homology is divisible by $9$ but is not divisible by $27$. As an application, we show several knots, including the $(2,9)$ torus knot, do not have chirally cosmetic bandings. This simplifies a proof of the result first proven by Yang; the $(2,k)$ torus knot $(k>1)$ has a chirally cosmetic banding if and only if $k=5$.

Abstract:We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular fibers. Some other obstructions are also presented for higher genus knots.
