Abstract:The performance of a rechargeable metal-air battery depends largely on the potency of the bifunctional oxygen electrodes, carrying out both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with equal efficiency. Transition metal oxides with multiple oxidation states are found to be suitable for such purposes, yet their performances are limited by poor intrinsic conductivity. In this work, we report how substitutional doping of larger Mo ion in nickel cobalt oxide (NCO) lattice could generate the tensile lattice strain, defect clustering and change in morphology which consequently enhance the electrochemical activity. Microstructural and spectroscopic observations reveal that different amount of doping of Mo in NCO leads not only the change in the morphology (from nanospikes to nanoflakes) but also enhances the electrochemical surface area (ECSA). The augmented effect of lattice strain, oxygen vacancy and higher ECSA improved oxygen bifunctional activity in Mo-doped NCO. The Mo 0.3 @NCO catalyst has shown excellent activity for OER with low overpotential of 450 mV in 0.1 M KOH and the high ECSA value of 0.12 mF/cm 2 compared to other catalyst. The microspheres were prepared by a sequential hydrothermal-annealing strategy and rechargeable zinc air battery (ZAB) - both aqueous and solid were prepared using the best composition. The aqueous ZAB shows a high specific capacity of 626 mAhg Zn −1 with superior cycling stability of more than 250 cycles. The ZAB can be stably charged and discharged up to 96 h and shows a round trip efficiency of approximately 50.3 % after 250 cycles of charge-discharge. Our work demonstrates how synergistic coupling of lattice strain, oxygen vacancy and higher ECSA can improve the bifunctional activity of doped catalyst for high-performance zinc air batteries (ZAB).
