Abstract:• Recent research has brought renewed attention to the multifaceted physical and cognitive dysfunction that accompanies acute respiratory failure. • Rehabilitation strategies and approaches to ventilator liberation have been identified as interventions to help mitigate symptoms relating to the post–intensive care syndrome. • Comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches to reduce experienced morbidity and accelerate recovery continue to be explored.
