Abstract:A new highly efficient red-emitting Ir(III) complex, bis [9-(4-(2-ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)-3-(4-phenylquinolin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole] [3-(pyridin-2-yl) benzaldehyde] iridium(III) (Ir-CHO), has been synthesized and characterized to investigate the impact of the electron-withdrawing formyl group on the optoelectronic properties of the resulting Ir(III) complexes. For comparison, bis [9-(4-(2-ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)-3-(4-phenylquinolin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole] [(3-(pyridin-2-yl) phenyl) methanol] iridium(III) (Ir-OH) and fac-tris[9-(4-(2-ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)-3-(4-phenylquinolin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole] iridium(III) (Ir-PQCz) were also prepared. Remarkably, Ir-CHO-doped red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) exhibited the highest performance, achieving a maximum luminance efficiency (LE) of 14.3 cd A(-1) and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 8.4%, which were better than those of Ir-OH-doped and Ir-PQCz-doped red OLEDs. The results can be attributed to the introduction of the electron-withdrawing formyl group, which improved the electron affinity in Ir-CHO and lowered the electron-injection barrier in OLEDs based on Ir-CHO. Similarly, white OLEDs (WOLEDs) with Ir-CHO as their red emitter demonstrated an excellent high LE of 26.1 cd A(-1) and an EQE of 10.9%. A combination of the thermal, photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescence (EL) properties of these Ir(III) complexes can thus lead to a conclusion that the incorporation of the electron-withdrawing formyl-substituted phenylpyridine (ppy-CHO) can apparently improve the phosphorescence of the resulting red-emitting iridium complexes and thus the OLED performance. The results suggest a simple methodology for the rational design of efficient phosphorescent complexes for light-emitting applications.

Abstract:A series of new heteroleptic iridium complexes bearing fluorenyl-modified 1-phenylisoquinoline as the first ligand and different ancillary ligands has been prepared and characterized. These complexes bis(1-(3-(9,9-dimethyl-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)isoquinoline-C2,N')iridium(III)acetylacetonate(Ir(DMFPQ)(2)acac)), bis(1-(3-(9,9-dimethyl-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)isoquinoline-C2,N')iridium(III)(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazolate)( Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pt) and bis(1-(3-(9,9-dimethyl-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)isoquinoline-C2,N')iridium(III)(2- (2-pyridyl)benzimidazolate)(Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pbi) showed red phosphorescent emissions of 615-630 nm in dichloromethane solution. The device fabricated with these complexes doped into a host polyfluorene (PFO) blend with 30% of an electron transport material 2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD)showed high device efficiencies. Ir(DMFPQ)(2)acac exhibited red emission with an external quantum efficiency(eta(ext)) of 14.3% and luminous efficiency(eta(c)) of 7.8 cd/A at 1.2 mA/cm(2) and the maximum brightness reached 10 006 cd/m(2) (Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage(CIE) chromaticity coordinates: (0.67, 0.32)) at 412 mA/cm(2). Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pt showed a eta(ext) of 13.0% and eta(c) of 9.2 cd/A at 17 mA/cm(2), 1532 cd/m(2), and the maximum brightness reached 15085 cd/m(2) (CIE: 0.64, 0.34) at 360 mA/cm2. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. New Iridium Complex As High-Efficiency Red Phosphorescent Emitter in Polymer Light-Emitting Devices

Abstract:A new heteroleptic iridium complex Ir(1-piq)(2)pt with 1-phenylisoquinoline and 3-(pyridin-29-yl)1H- 1,2,4-triazole was synthesized and characterized. The complex was incorporated into phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-terminated polyfluorene (PFO-poss) as a host polymer doped with 30% of electron transport materials 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD). Red electrophosphorescence was observed with a peak emission at 605 nm. The highest-efficiency polymer light-emitting diode was achieved with PFO-poss doped with 2% Ir(1-piq) 2pt. An external quantum efficiency of 10.4% and a luminous efficiency of 9.4 cd A(-1) were obtained at 10.8 mA cm(-2). These values were found to be 7.67% and 5.99 cd A(-1) at 100 mA cm(-2).

Abstract:A new functionalized heteroleptic iridium complex coordinated with 1-phenylisoquinoline（1-piq） and a functionalized β-diketone（G1）,Ir（1-piq）2G1,was synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR,mass spectrometry and elemental analysis.The larger conjugation of the replacement of acetylacetone（acac） by a functionalized β-diketonate ligand led to a significant decrease in the HOMO level toward vacuum level,while Ir（1-piq）2G1 and Ir（1-piq）2（acac） showed red phosphorescent emissions of about 620 nm in dichloromethane solution.The phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices were achieved,with the complexes incorporated with polyfluorene（PFO） as a host polymer doped with 30% of 5-（4-biphenylyl）-2-（4-tert-butylphenyl）-1,3,4-oxadiazole（PBD） as electron transport material.The energy transfer mechanism of the devices was also discussed.The lower EL performance of Ir（1-piq）2G1 is ascribed to the inter-ligand energy transfer,indicating that it is important to control the energy level of the cyclometalated and ancillary ligands.

Abstract:Three heteroleptic iridium complexes bearing 1-phenylisoquinoline (1-piq) and 1-phenyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (2Hpiq) derivatives as cyclometallated ligands and acetylacetone (acac) as ancillary ligand was reported. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated. These complexes showed red phosphorescent emissions of 621-635 nm in dichloromethane solution. The nonconjugated isoquinoline cycle lowered the energy level. The effects of substituent structure on cyclometallated ligand were also discussed. The results indicated that introducing nonconjucated ligands or bulky substitutents could change the energy level of iridium complexes and red-shift their emitting color.© 2012 American Scientific Publishers, All rights reserved.
Pure Red Iridium(III) Complexes Possessing Good Electron Mobility with 1,5-Naphthyridin-4-ol Derivatives for High-Performance OLEDs with an EQE over 31.

Abstract:Three iridium(III) complexes (Ir(4tfmpq)2mND, Ir(4tfmpq)2mmND, and Ir(4tfmpq)2mpND) with the 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline (4tfmpq) main ligand and 1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol derivatives (mND: 8-methyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol, mmND: 2,8-dimethyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol, mpND: 8-methyl-2-phenyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol) as ancillary ligands were studied. The complexes (Ir(4tfmpq)2mND, Ir(4tfmpq)2mmND, and Ir(4tfmpq)2mpND) emit pure red emissions of 626-630 nm with high photoluminescence quantum yields of 85.2-93.4% in CH2Cl2 and better electron mobilities than that of tri(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum. By employing three pure red emitters, all the phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes exhibited superior performances with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 31.48% and the efficiency roll-off is very mild, which are among the best results ever reported for pure red organic light-emitting diodes using Ir(III) complexes. In addition, CIE( x, y) coordinates of (0.670, 0.327) are also close to the standard red emission required by the National Television System Committee.
Highly efficient green and red electroluminescence with an extremely low efficiency roll-off based on iridium(III) complexes containing a bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide ancillary ligand

Abstract:In this study, two iridium(iii) complexes named Ir(tfpmd)(2)(stpip) and Ir(tfpqz)(2)(stpip) were synthesized, in which 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (tfpmd) or 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline (tfpqz) was used as the cyclometalated ligand and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (stpip) as the ancillary ligand, respectively. The Ir(tfpmd)(2)(stpip) complex shows green light, peaking at 501 nm with a high phosphorescence quantum efficiency of 0.83. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with a double-emissive-layer structure using the (tfpmd)(2)(stpip) complex displays good performances with a maximum luminance (L-max) above 39000 cd m(-2), a maximum current efficiency ((c,max)) of 90.5 cd A(-1), a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 30.8% and an extremely low efficiency roll-off. Even at the high luminance of 10000 cd m(-2), the efficiency roll-off ratio is below 5%. The Ir(tfpqz)(2)(stpip) complex shows red light, peaking at 624 nm, and its corresponding device with a single-emissive-layer structure also shows decent characteristics with a L-max of 33732 cd m(-2), a (c,max) of 28.6 cd A(-1), an EQE(max) of 18.3% and also a very low efficiency roll-off. These results suggest that the green and red Ir(iii) complexes with bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide as the ancillary ligand have the potential for use in high-efficiency OLEDs with a low efficiency roll-off.
Two Green‐Phosphorescent Iridium Complexes with 2‐phenylpyrimidine Derivatives and Tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate for Efficient Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Two phosphorescent IrIII complexes Ir1 and Ir2 containing 5‐fluoro‐2‐[4‐(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]pyrimidine and 2‐(3,4‐difluorophenyl)‐5‐fluoropyrimidine as cyclometalated main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand were synthesized. Ir1 was characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography. Ir1 and Ir2 show green emissions peaking at 527 and 513 nm, respectively. By using the two complexes as emitters, organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the structure of TAPC (1,1‐bis[4‐(di‐p‐tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane, 40 nm)/Ir1 or Ir2 (10 wt.‐%):mCP (1,3‐bis(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)benzene, 20 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5‐tris(m‐pyrid‐3‐ylphenyl)benzene, 30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) showed high performance with maximum current efficiencies as high as 81.91 or 71.17 cd A–1 and maximum external quantum efficiencies of 20.8 or 21.3 %, respectively. The low‐efficiency roll‐off ratios of the two devices suggest that the two complexes have potential applications in OLEDs.
Deep-Red and Near-Infrared Iridium Complexes with Fine-Tuned Emission Colors by Adjusting Trifluoromethyl Substitution on Cyclometalated Ligands Combined with Matched Ancillary Ligands for Highly Efficient Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Six novel Ir(C^N)2(L^X)-type heteroleptic iridium complexes with deep-red and near-infrared region (NIR)-emitting coverage were constructed through the cross matching of various cyclometalating (C^N) and ancillary (LX) ligands. Here, three novel C^N ligands were designed by introducing the electron-withdrawing group CF3 on the ortho (o-), meta (m-), and para (p-) positions of the phenyl ring in the 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq) group, which were combined with two electron-rich LX ligands (dipba and dipg), respectively, leading to subsequent iridium complexes with gradually changing emission colors from deep red (≈660 nm) to NIR (≈700 nm). Moreover, a series of phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were fabricated by employing these phosphors as dopant emitters with two doping concentrations, 5% and 10%, respectively. They exhibited efficient electroluminescence (EL) with significantly high EQE values: >15.0% for deep red light0 (λmax = 664 nm) and >4.0% for NIR cases (λmax = 704 nm) at a high luminance level of 100 cd m−2. This work not only provides a promising approach for finely tuning the emission color of red phosphors via the easily accessible molecular design strategy, but also enables the establishment of an effective method for enriching phosphorescent-emitting molecules for practical applications, especially in the deep-red and near-infrared region (NIR).

Novel Design of Iridium Phosphors with Pyridinylphosphinate Ligands for High-Efficiency Blue Organic Light-emitting Diodes

Abstract:Due to the high quantum efficiency and wide scope of emission colors, iridium (Ir) (III) complexes have been widely applied as guest materials for OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). Contrary to well-developed Ir(III)-based red and green phosphorescent complexes, the efficient blue emitters are rare reported. Like the development of the LED, the absence of efficient and stable blue materials hinders the widely practical application of the OLEDs. Inspired by this, we designed two novel ancillary ligands of phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphinate (ppp) and dipyridinylphosphinate (dpp) for efficient blue phosphorescent iridium complexes (dfppy) 2 Ir(ppp) and (dfppy) 2 Ir(dpp) (dfppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine) with good electron transport property. The devices using the new iridium phosphors display excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances with a peak current efficiency of 58.78 cd/A, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 28.3%, a peak power efficiency of 52.74 lm/W and negligible efficiency roll-off ratios. The results demonstrated that iridium complexes with pyridinylphosphinate ligands are potential blue phosphorescent materials for OLEDs.

Abstract:Iridium (Ir)(iii) complexes with sufficient luminous efficiency and narrow full width at half maxima (FWHM) are required urgently for realizing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) simultaneously with high electroluminescence efficiency and good color purity. In this work, three novel main ligands incorporating the peripheral large steric hindrance units and rigid structures for efficiently suppressing the intermolecular stacking effect, restricting the intramolecular relaxation and reducing the concentration quenching are developed. The corresponding Ir(iii) complexes exhibit emission peaks at 618, 609 and 621 nm, short phosphorescence lifetimes around 1 mu s, high photoluminescence quantum yields of 80-90% and a narrow FWHM of 40 nm in solution. Moreover, the devices based on these Ir(iii) complexes show superior performances with the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage color coordinates of (x = 0.63-0.64 and y = 0.32-0.35), close to the standard red emission required by the National Television System Committee. In particular, the device using Ir-2CF(3) exhibits the best performances with a maximum luminance of 38 277 cd m(-2), a maximum current efficiency of 47.85 cd A(-1), and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) up to 32.0% as well as extremely low efficiency roll-off with an EQE of 30.8% at 1000 cd m(-2), which are among the best results ever reported for pure red OLEDs using Ir(iii) complexes. Therefore, the design of main ligands by modulating the peripheral large steric hindrance provides an effective strategy for realizing efficient Ir(iii) complex-based OLEDs simultaneously with narrow emission and high efficiency.
Green Iridium Complexes Based on Pyrimidine Derivatives for Efficient Electroluminescence with EQE Near 30%

Abstract:To obtain dopants owing excellent electron mobility, four novel iridium (III) complexes (Ir(tfmppm)(2)(acac), Ir (tfmppm)(2)(tpip), Ir(f-4-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) and Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tPiP)) with green emission using 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine (tfmppm), 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-4-tfmppm) and 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-3-tfmppm) as main ligands, acetylacetonate (acac) and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (tpip) as ancillary ligands, were investigated, respectively. Due to the variation of the structures among the complexes, the photoluminescence quantum yield (up to 94%) and electron mobility can be regulated gradually, which would broaden the recombination zone, balance the distribution of holes and electrons, leading to excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances. Among four emitters, the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) display the best EL performances with a maximum current efficiency of 92.83 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 29.5%, suggesting these materials have potential application in OLEDs.
Synthesis, Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence of One Iridium Complex with 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) Pyrimidine and Tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate Ligands

Abstract:Using 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) pyrimidine as main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand, one iridium complex was synthesized. This complex shows a green emission peaking at 543 nm with a quantum efficiency yield as 48% in deareated CH2Cl2 solution. It also has good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 351 degrees C. Using this material as emitter, the organic light-emitting diode shows good performances with a maximum luminance 42 898 cd/m(2), a maximum current efficiency up to 54.29 cd/A with low efficiency roll-off. At the luminance of 5000 and 10 000 cd/m(2), the current efficiencies are still kept at 46.70 and 40.63 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In the deep red: A biscyclometalated deep-red phosphorescent dopant containing a new ancillary ligand, iridium(III) bis(1-phenylisoquinolinato-N,C2′) (2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)phenol) (Ir(piq)2bop) has been designed and synthesized. By doping the new complex into Bebq2 (Bebq2=bis(10-hydroxybenzo[h] quinolinato)beryllium), a saturated red-emitting PHOLED device was obtained. At a luminescence of 100 cd m−2, the device shows efficiencies of 10.3 cd A−1 and 9.1 Lm W−1 with CIE coordinates of (0.67, 0.33).

Abstract:Aiming to balance the injection and transport of electrons and holes, nitrogen heterocycle and 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives were introduced in iridium(iii) complexes to obtain organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high performances. Thus, two novel Ir(iii) complexes (Ir(tfmphpm)2(pop) and Ir(tfmppm)2(pop)) with green emissions using 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (tfmphpm) and 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine (tfmppm) as cyclometalating ligands, and 2-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenol (pop) as an ancillary ligand were synthesized. Both emitters show high photoluminescence efficiencies up to 94% and good electron mobility. The devices using two emitters with the structure of ITO (indium-tin-oxide)/MoO3 (molybdenum oxide, 5 nm)/TAPC (di-[4-(N,N-ditolyl-amino)-phenyl]cyclohexane, 30 nm)/mCP (1,3-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene, 5 nm)/Ir(iii) complexes (6 wt%) : PPO21 (3-(diphenylphosphoryl)-9-(4-(diphenylphosphoryl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole, 10 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri(m-pyrid-3-yl-phenyl) benzene, 40 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) display good electroluminescence performances with a maximum luminance of 48 981 cd m-2, a maximum current efficiency of 92.79 cd A-1 and a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 31.8%, respectively, and the efficiency roll-off ratio is low, suggesting that they have potential application in OLEDs.
High-Efficiency Orange to Near-Infrared Emissions from Bis-Cyclometalated Iridium Complexes with Phenyl-Benzoquinoline Isomers As Ligands

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of three novel bis-cyclometalated iridium complexes with phenyl-benzoquinoline (pbq) analogs as ligands, namely, Ir(pbq-f)(2)acac, Ir(dpbq-f)(2)acac, and Ir(pbq-g)(2)acac, where pbq-f, dpbq-f and pbq-g representing 3-phenyl-benzo[f]quinoline, 1,3-diphenyl-benzo[f] quinoline, and 2-phenyl-benzo[g] quinoline, respectively. Interesting distinctions were observed in the electronic structures, photophysical and electroluminescent properties of these complexes. Ir(pbq-f)(2)acac and Ir(dpbq-f)(2)acac are orange-red emissive phosphors with strong metal-ligand charge transfer ((3)MLCT) emission bands centered at 577 and 604nm, respectively, while Ir(pbq-g)(2)acac shows the largest red-shift to near-infrared (NIR) region with a peak emission at 708nm and a shoulder around 780nm in solution. All the phosphors exhibit strong electrophosphorescence with negligible triplet-triplet annihilation due to quite short phosphorescent lifetimes (similar to 0.5 mu s) and high emission quantum yields. Orange-red emissive Ir(dpbq-f)(2)acac gives a maximum current efficiency of 17.4 cd/A and external quantum efficiency (eta(ext)) of 10.5%. NIR emissive Ir(pbq-g)(2)acac shows a promising emission centered at 720nm with a shoulder above 780nm. Forward light output is 4.6 mW/cm(2) at 13V and the maximum eta(ext) is nearly 1.1%. Our study demonstrates that the constitutional isomers of cyclometallated ligand distinctly control the electronic structures and emissive properties of the corresponding Ir complexes and the obtained NIR emissive Ir(pbq-g)(2)acac implies the potential to realize highly efficient NIR OLEDs based on Ir(III) complexes.
Saturated Red Electrophosphorescence From Novel Pyridinopyridazine‐Based Iridium Complexes

Abstract:Two novel isomeric Ir(III) complexes based on pyridinopyridazine derivative ligands were first synthesized and intramolecular hydrogen bonds were found in them. The OLEDs based on them showed EQEmax greater than 11% with CIE close to the standard red values of NTSC. Two isomeric homoleptic Ir(III) complexes with pyridinopyridazine derivative ligands were prepared first. Due to its stronger intramolecular hydrogen bonding and intermolecular interactions, complex IrPPM has a higher decomposition temperature (5% weight loss) of 387°C than IrPPP (354°C). They have similar UV–Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra in CH2Cl2 solution with photoluminescence peaks around 635–636 nm. However, the emission peak of IrPPM in neat powder obviously red‐shifted to 652 nm, and that of IrPPP blue‐shifted to 626 nm. Simultaneously, complex IrPPM has a lower photoluminescence quantum yield of 0.3 than IrPPP (0.5). Efficient saturated red OLED devices are developed with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage color coordinates of (0.67, 0.32) and (0.66, 0.32), respectively. The maximum external quantum efficiencies of both devices exceed 11%. These results demonstrate the great potential of pyridinopyridazine derivatives for developing new iridium complexes for OLED applications.

Abstract:Using 1-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (tfmpiq) and 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) quinazoline (tfmpqz) as the main ligands and pyrazole pyridine derivatives (mepzpy: 2-(3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl) pyridine, cf3pzpy: 2-(3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine) as the ancillary ligands, four iridium(III) complexes (PIQ-Irl-me, PIQ-Ir2-cf3, PQZ-Ir3-me and PQZ-Ir4-cf3) were synthesized and investigated. Due to the variation of the ligands, these Ir(III) complexes showed different emissions peaking from 602 to 628 nm with the phosphorescence quantum yields of 0.40-0.67. Moreover, applying these Ir(III) complexes as emitters, the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the configuration of ITO/HATCN (hexaazatriphenylenehexacabonitrile, 5 nm)/TAPC (bis[4-(N,N-ditolylamino)-phenyl] cyclohexane, 50 nm)/Ir(III) complexes (8 wt%): TCTA (4,4',4"-tri(9-carbazoyl)triphenylamine, 20 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri[(3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl]benzene, 40 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) exhibited good performances. Especially, the device with orange-red PQZ-Ir4-cf3 emitter obtained the best device performances with the maximum current efficiency of 40.04 cd A(-1) and the maximum power efficiency of 33.98 lm W-1. For the pure red complex PQZ-Ir4-me with CIE coordinates at (0.64, 0.34) showed the maximum external quantum efficiency of 22.3%. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Iridium(III) complexes with 1-phenylisoquinoline-4-carbonitrile units for efficient NIR organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract:Achieving the high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of near-infrared (NIR) emission in iridium(III) complexes still remains a challenge owing to their unsteady excited states which easily decay to the ground states through the nonradiative pathways. Herein, three Ir(III) phosphors in which the cyclometalated ligand 1-phenylisoquinoline-4-carbonitrile (piq-CN) is functionalized with the cyano, <i>tert-</i>butyl, and dimethyl groups are developed (CN-CNIr, Bu-CNIr, and DM-CNIr, respectively). Three simple synthetic steps can afford this class of deep red to NIR Ir(III) emitters. The organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on Bu-CNIr and DM-CNIr attain the maximum EQEs of 7.1% and 7.2% with the emission peaks at 695 and 714 nm, respectively. This strategy using substituted piq-CN derivatives as the cyclometalated ligands can offer an effective approach to promote the radiative rate of NIR-emitting Ir(III) materials. An insight into how the electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents on ligands influence the optoelectronic properties of their Ir(III) complexes is also provided.
