Abstract:Food by-products, as sources of high-value compounds, have shown great promise for formulating novel food packaging and edible films for food preservation. This work focused on extracting pectin from lemon, pomelo, and pitaya peels using an ethanol precipitation method. The degree of esterification and the monosaccharide composition of the extracted pectin were determined, and the antioxidant activity of the pectin was assessed. Subsequently, pectin-based films were prepared using the casting method, employing pectin from various sources. These films’ physical and mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) were assessed, and their microstructure and intermolecular interactions were examined using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results of this study demonstrate variations in the degree of esterification among the three pectin samples, with pomelo peel and lemon peel pectins exhibiting higher degrees of methylation compared to pectin from pitaya peel, which had a lower degree of methylation. However, no significant differences were observed regarding the films’ moisture content and water vapor permeability. Notably, the films made from pitaya peel pectin exhibited superior tensile strength and elongation at break to those derived from pomelo peel and lemon peel pectins. The pectin recovered from these fruit peels had great film properties and thus could be utilized for food packaging and edible films.

Abstract:The eco-friendly polyelectrolyte bilayer films were prepared by layer-by-layer (LBL) casting method using chitosan (CS) and four types of edible citrus pectin as film substrates. The results showed that the polyelectrolyte bilayer films exhibited excellent comprehensive properties. Furthermore, the interaction between CS and pectin was closely related to the degree of methyl-esterification (DM), molecular weight (Mw), and zeta potential of pectin. The low DM, Mw, and high zeta potential of the low methyl-esterified pectin (LM) resulted in a denser internal structure of the bilayer film, stronger UV shielding performance, and stronger gas barrier ability. The high DM and Mw of the high methyl-esterified pectin (HM) endow the bilayer film with stronger mechanical properties, thermal stability, and antifogging property. The microstructural and spectroscopic analysis showed that there are hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between the layers. Overall, the developed CS-pectin polyelectrolyte bilayer films provided potential applications for food bioactive packaging.

Abstract:Coffee wastes are underused materials, largely available in coffee producing regions, which can be used to obtain pectins for the development of films for packaging. Coffee residual water (CRW) provided a phenolic and protein rich-pectic fraction (CRWP), which has 49 % uronic acid. This pectic fraction was used for the development of films with chitosan (Chit). Additionally, pectins extracted from coffee pulp with acid, Coffea arabica pectin (CAP), hot water-soluble pectic fraction (HWSP), and chelating agent-soluble pectic fraction (CSP), were used to develop pectin-chitosan films. Flow and viscoelastic properties of film forming solutions were assessed, showing better characteristics for the pectins from the pulp over those from the residual water. The different composition of the pectin fractions allowed to relate film properties with their structural features and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed interactions between pectin and chitosan in the films. Results showed that CAP-Chit and CSP-Chit films were transparent, hydrophobic, and had the best mechanical properties. These results demonstrate that coffee residual wastes have the potential to provide pectins that can be used for the development of films.

Abstract:The development of sustainable materials from the valorization of waste is a good alternative to reducing the negative environmental impact of plastic packaging. The objectives of this study were to develop and characterize pectin-based composite films incorporated with cork or cork with either coffee grounds or walnut shells, as well as to test the films' genotoxicity, antioxidant properties, and biodegradation capacity in soil and seawater. The addition of cork, coffee grounds, or walnut shells modified the films' characteristics. The results showed that those films were thicker (0.487 ± 0.014 mm to 0.572 ± 0.014 mm), more opaque (around 100%), darker (L* = 25.30 ± 0.78 to 33.93 ± 0.84), and had a higher total phenolic content (3.17 ± 0.01 mg GA/g to 4.24 ± 0.02 mg GA/g). On the other hand, the films incorporated only with cork showed higher values of elongation at break (32.24 ± 1.88% to 36.30 ± 3.25%) but lower tensile strength (0.91 ± 0.19 MPa to 1.09 ± 0.08 MPa). All the films presented more heterogeneous and rougher microstructures than the pectin film. This study also revealed that the developed films do not contain DNA-reactive substances and that they are biodegradable in soil and seawater. These positive properties could subsequently make the developed films an interesting eco-friendly food packaging solution that contributes to the valorization of organic waste and by-products, thus promoting the circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of plastic materials.

Abstract:Pectin structure-miscibility-functionality relationships in starch films remain unknown. In this study, five citrus pectins (CPs) with 17 to 63 % of degree of methyl esterification (DM) and sugar beet pectin (SBP, rich in acetyl moieties and rhamnogalacturonan-I domains) were investigated for composition and structure and, further, blended with pea starch (3:1 starch-pectin weight ratio) to fabricate self-standing films. The incorporation of pectin resulted in a two- to three-fold increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus (up to 52.2 and 1837 MPa, respectively, using CP with low DM) without compromising elongation at break. Starch-SBP films presented the lowest strength among pectin films. Lower film moisture and water vapor permeability were attained with CP of high DM, or with SBP, whereas surface wettability was explained by counteracting factors affecting film compositional heterogeneity. Films made with high methoxyl CP, or with SBP, showed lower overall H-bonding (FTIR) and starch crystallinity (XRD). A DM above 57 % negatively affected the mixing and interfacial adhesion of pectin with starch, as shown by Attenuated Total Reflection-FTIR imaging. Pectins with the lowest purity, presumably with the greatest content in xyloglucan, as suggested by HPAEC, presented ~20 % higher elongation at break than the other films.

Abstract:The development of bio-based materials remains one of the most important alternatives to plastic materials. Although research in this field is growing, reporting various materials and methodologies, it is still necessary to increase exploration. The aim of this work was to expand and complement previous research on the preparation and characterization of high- and low-methoxyl pectin films obtained by casting, with the addition of commercial and recovered sunflower waxes. The results showed that the addition of sunflower waxes to the pectin matrix generated some discontinuity in the aggregate, increasing the thickness and roughness of the film. However, due to their hydrophobic nature, the waxes contributed to lower vapor transmission rate values of the films. On the other hand, the low-methoxyl pectin films had a more crystalline structure, which could help to diminish water vapor permeability values, mechanical resistance and rigidity, and improve their elongation. Regarding chemical characteristics, most of the raw materials’ chemical groups were found in the resulting films, and the presence of C-H bending due to pectin gelation was observed. Finally, the compatibility and contribution of pectin and sunflower waxes to the production of the films were demonstrated, as well as the possibility of using materials from industrial waste in food packaging applications.

Abstract:Composite film prepared using PVA, pectin form passion and lime peel had excellent mechanical, optical, thermal and bioactive properties. This film was used to pack strawberries and plums during chilled storage. Active film could significantly increase the shelf life of both the fruits. Pectin from lemon and passion fruit peels was studied for its potential to serve as a source of biopolymer for preparation of active film. To develop a packaging film appropriate for fruits, different combinations of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), pectin from lemon and passion fruit peel and rosemary essential oil (REO) were evaluated. Extensive characterisation of these films with respect to colour, thickness, moisture, opacity, UV absorption, tensile strength, elongation, swelling, solubility and thermal and chemical interactions was studied. Film prepared with PVA, lime and pectin peel (2:1:1 v/v) without REO and glycerol as plasticiser was found to be best based on the above properties. Additionally, the effectiveness of this film at extending the shelf life of strawberries and plums was evaluated. Physiological changes on storage were lesser in active packaged fruits as compared to unpackaged fruits. On basis of several spoilage indices studied, unpacked fruits had shelf life of less than 7 days, while those packed in active film were acceptable up to 15 days in case of strawberry and 45 in case of plums when stored at chilled temperature (6°C). Thus, use of the developed active packaging film would be beneficial for extending the marketable period of the fruits and enhancing its cost‐effectiveness.

Abstract:Biofunctional features of Pickering emulsified film from citrus peel pectin/limonene oil/nanocrystalline cellulose. Summary The application of edible films can be an alternative solution for maintaining the quality of post‐harvest horticultural commodities. This study aimed to determine the effect of adding a stabiliser, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), on the functional characteristics of citrus peel pectin and limonene essential oil (LEO)‐based coatings. A formulation comprising pectin (0.5%), CNC (0.075%) and LEO (0.5%) was prepared. The CNC morphology (nanometre scale) was nanorods with pointed ends on both sides, revealed with atomic force microscopy. Gas chromatography–mass‐spectrometry verified the main component of LEO, d‐limonene. All prepared film‐forming solution showed good stability with zeta potential values ranging from −76.34 to −35.33 mV. The developed film had a rougher surface due to the presence of oil aggregates and CNC agglomeration during film preparation. The addition of Pickering emulsion showed improvements in terms of mechanical properties (tensile strength 23.61 MPa, and elongation 65.87%), water barrier and the film clarity compared with regular emulsions with synthetic surfactants. It effectively inhibited the growth of harmful microbes that cause the rotting of fresh fruits, i.e., Penicilium digitatum, by 3.87% and 14.83% compared to the conventional emulsion and pectin‐based film, respectively, through the well diffusion test method. Thus, the combination of pectin/CNC/LEO can be used as an alternative active coating for fresh fruit commodities.

Abstract:Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the films and exhibited good interaction with the polymer matrix. The addition of pectin led to significantly higher mechanical and optical properties of the composite film, compared with SDF/CMC-Na composite film. The tensile strength reached 21.419 ± 2.22 MPa, and the minimum transparency reduced to 88.9% ± 0.42%, with increasing pectin. Notably, the water resistance and oil resistance were enhanced. The composite films also possessed satisfactory antioxidant activity, with a DPPH-free radical scavenging rate of 46.33% ± 0.72%, while antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was not obvious. Antioxidant and antibacterial SDF/pectin/CMC-Na composite films with enhanced mechanical, optical and barrier properties are excellent candidates for active edible packaging.

Abstract:Water extraction of crude mulberry leaf extract and two bio-active molecules from it, i.e. deoxynojirimycin and chlorogenic acid, were used for development of pectin-based antioxidative and antimicrobial edible films for food packaging and coating applications. The developed pectin-based films blended with bioactive compounds showed improved antioxidative, antimicrobial activities and better mechanical properties. FT-IR was used to investigate the intermolecular interactions and structural changes in the films. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the surface morphology, homogeneity and miscibility of the developed films. The thermal stability of the films was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The eco-friendly nature of the developed films was demonstrated by water solubility and soil degradation properties. The pectin-based formulations was used for coating capsicum fruit to extend shelf life. The crude leaf extract and deoxynojirimycin treated fruit showed increased shelf life of up to 12 days as compared to 6 days in control fruit. The overall findings of the study suggests that the developed eco-friendly edible films can be used as a promising natural alternative food packaging/coating material to extend shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract:This study focuses on developing a biodegradable film using a novel hybrid citrus peel pectin. A bilayer approach with PLA was proposed and optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to complement pectin films' mechanical and barrier property limitations. The optimized film composition (2.90 g PLA and 1.96 g pectin) showed enhanced mechanical strength with a tensile strength (TS) of 7.04 MPa and an elongation at break (EAB) of 462.63%. In addition, it demonstrated lower water vapor (1.45 × 10−10 g/msPa), oxygen (2.79 × 10−7 g/ms) permeability, and solubility (23.53%). Compared to single-layer pectin films, the optimized bilayer film had a 25% increased thickness, significantly improved water barrier (3806 times lower) and oxygen barrier (3.68 times lower) properties, and 22.38 times higher stretchability, attributed to hydrogen bond formation, as confirmed by FTIR analysis. The bilayer film, effectively protected against UV and visible light, could be a barrier against light-induced lipid oxidation. Moreover, it demonstrated superior seal efficiency, ensuring secure sealing in practical applications. The bilayer pouch containing mustard dressing exhibited stable sealing with no leakage after immersion in hot water and ethanol, making it suitable for secure food pouch packaging.

Abstract:Here, we prepared ionically crosslinked films using pectin extracted from agro-wastes, specifically ambarella peels (AFP) and jackfruit seed slimy sheath (JFS). Physiochemical properties of pectins, including moisture content, molecular weight (Mw), degree of esterification (DE), and galacturonic acid (GA), were analyzed. Optimal extraction was determined, i.e., citric acid concentration 0.3 M, time 60 min, solid/liquid ratio 1:25, and temperature 90 °C for AFP or 85 °C for JFS. Pectin yields under these conditions were 29.67 % ± 0.35 % and 29.93 ± 0.49 %, respectively. AFP pectin revealed Mw, DE, and GA values of 533.20 kDa, 67.08 % ± 0.68 %, and 75.39 ± 0.82 %, while JFS pectin exhibited values of 859.94 kDa, 63.04 % ± 0.47 %, and 78.63 % ± 0.71 %, respectively. The pectin films crosslinked with Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, or Zn2+ exhibited enhanced tensile strength and Young's modulus, along with reduced elongation at break, moisture content, water solubility, water vapor permeability, and oxygen permeability. Structural analyses indicated metal ions were effectively crosslinked with carboxyl groups of pectin. Notably, the Cu2+-crosslinked film demonstrated superior water resistance, mechanical properties, and exhibited the highest antioxidant and antibacterial activities among all tested films. Therefore, the pectin films represent a promising avenue to produce eco-friendly food packaging materials with excellent properties.

Abstract:In light of the dangers to human health posed by the use of plastic films for food preservation, new functional films derived from non-toxic and rich in antioxidant biosources must be developed. Chitosan (CH)-based active antioxidant films were developed by infused with halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and 5, 10, and 20% of Citrus limetta pomace extract (LPE) (v/v % of film forming solution). An increase in the LPE amount resulted in films with increased thickness. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed the smooth, compact, and dense nature of the CH-LPE films and the uniform dispersion of HNT. An X-ray diffraction study revealed the crystallinity of CH/HNT/LPE films was greater than that of CH film. CH films with LPE possessed a better elongation ratio (maximum of 31.64%) with reduced tensile strength than pure CH also affected the water vapor permeability of the film. The CH film with the addition of HNT and LPE (20% v/v) was optimal for producing functional films with 80.42% antioxidant properties. Within the context of the food processing sector, CH/HNT/LPE films have the potential to be utilized as active packaging material in order to improve the oxidative stability of lipids.

Abstract:Ilex paraguariensis (IP) extract was added to prepare edible films using a central rotational composite design (CCRD) 22 with IP extract and sorbitol concentrations as variables. The IP extract was characterized by color parameters, total phenolic content, caffeine, flavonoids, and chlorophyll content, and antioxidant activity and the edible films were assessed for the same analysis and thickness, water vapor permeability (WVP), solubility in water, fluorescence, photodegradation and UV/Vis light barrier, FT-IR, thermogravimetry, and differential exploratory colorimetry. Sorbitol increased thickness and WVP, while the extract influenced the concentration of phenolic compounds in the films. The optimum concentrations of extract and sorbitol were 10% and 15%, respectively. Films presented thermal resistance (until 230 °C) and an excellent barrier to UV light. Furthermore, these films could carry compounds originally in IP, showing good functional properties concerning the water vapor barrier (showing a great variation scale due to the possibility to increase sorbitol or not, between 3.33 and 5.27 g mm/m2 day KPa). The films showed great potential to replace conventional primary packaging, and if consumed with food, as a bullet paper, they can add nutritional value to the packaged product.

Abstract:Blend films based on sodium alginate (SA) and citrus pectin (P) reinforced with different concentrations of SiO2 (0–10% w/w) were developed in this study. From the morphological (SEM) and structural (FT-IR) evaluation, it was verified that the incorporation of the reinforcing agent did not drastically modify the microstructure of the films, nor did new chemical bonds form. However, the XRD results suggested a slight reduction in the crystallinities of the blends by the incorporation of SiO2. Among the formulations prepared, the addition of a 5% reinforcing agent was responsible for the simultaneous improvement of mechanical and barrier properties. Comparing the control sample (SA/P) with the SA/P/5.0%SiO2 film, the tensile strength increased from 27.7 ± 3.7 to 40.6 ± 4.5 MPa, and the water-vapor transmission rate decreased from 319.8 ± 38.7 to 288.9 ± 23.5 g m−2 day−1. Therefore, SiO2, as a reinforcing agent in SA/P blends, represents a simple and effective strategy for improving the properties of biopolymer-based films in applications, such as packaging.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in the development of biodegradable, safe materials to extend the shelf life of food and replace non-biodegradable plastics. Several materials have been investigated that can be used as edible coatings to extend the shelf life of fruit and vegetable products. In the present work, the design and characterization of different films of nopal mucilage, orange pectin, and orange essential oil were investigated for their potential use as edible coatings. It was found that the pectin concentration had a significant effect ( p<0.05 ) on the thickness, color, and transparency of the edible films. According to the results, the formulation 0.5% mucilage-0.25 % pectin-0.25 % essential orange oil was chosen. Infrared spectroscopy showed no changes in the chemical compounds of the film formulation. The XRD pattern showed that this thin film is amorphous and contains calcium oxalate of nopal mucilage and oleic acid. In the water vapor permeability tests, the films containing orange essential oil in their formulation showed a higher effective water diffusion and water permeability coefficients as compared to the other formulations. In addition, the concentration of orange essential oil has an antimicrobial effect ( p<0.05 ) on some bacteria of interest for food safety. This work demonstrates a new methodology and measurement technique to determine the effective water diffusion and water permeability coefficients for edible thin films based on the photoacoustic effect.

Abstract:The development of biobased antioxidant active packaging has been valued by the food industry for complying with environmental and food waste concerns. In this work, physicochemical properties for chitosan composite films as a potential active food packaging were investigated. Chitosan films were prepared by solution casting, plasticized with a 1:2 choline chloride: glycerol mixture as a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and incorporated with 0–10% of optimized açaí oil polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs). Scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that the chitosan composite films were continuous and contained well-dispersed PECs. The increased PECs content had significant influence on the thickness, water vapor permeability, crystallinity (CrD) and mechanical and dynamic behavior of the films, as well as their antioxidant properties. The tensile strength was reduced in the following order: 11.0 MPa (control film) > 0.74 MPa (5% DES) > 0.63 MPa (5% DES and 5% PECs). Films containing 2% of PECs had an increased CrD, ~6%, and the highest elongation at break, ~104%. Films with 1% of PECs displayed the highest antioxidant properties against the ABTS and DPPH radicals, ~6 and ~17 mg TE g−1, respectively, and highest equivalent polyphenols content (>0.5 mg GAE g−1). Films with 2% of particles were not significantly different. These results suggested that the chitosan films that incorporated 1–2% of microparticles had the best combined mechanical and antioxidant properties as a potential material for food packaging.

Abstract:Pectin recovered via hydrodynamic cavitation (IntegroPectin) from lemon and grapefruit agri-food waste intrinsically containing antimicrobial bioactive substances (flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenes, and terpenoids) was used to generate innovative and eco-compatible films that efficiently inhibit the growth of Gram-negative pathogens. Extensive characterization of films confirmed the presence of these substances, which differently interact with the polysaccharide polymer (pectin), plasticizer (glycerol), surfactant (Tween 60), and cross-linker (Ca 2+ ), conferring to these films a unique structure. Besides, IntegroPectin-based films constitute versatile systems for the sustained, controlled, and slow-release (up to 72 h) of bioactive substances in an aqueous environment. This feature is crucial for the good in vitro antimicrobial activity exerted by IntegroPectin films against three Gram-negative bacteria (two indicator pathogen strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145, P. aeruginosa PAO1, and the clinical isolate Klebsiella pneumoniae ) that are involved in the global emergence of the antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract:Edible films and coatings gained renewed interest in the food packaging sector with polysaccharide and protein blending being explored as a promising strategy to improve properties of edible films. The present work studies composite edible films in different proportions of pectin (P), alginate (A) and whey Protein concentrate (WP) formulated with a simplex centroid mixture design and evaluated for physico-chemical characteristics to understand the effects of individual components on the final film performance. The studied matrices exhibited good film forming capacity, except for whey protein at a certain concentration, with thickness, elastic and optical properties correlated to the initial solution viscosity. A whey protein component in general lowered the viscosity of the initial solutions compared to that of alginate or pectin solutions. Subsequently, a whey protein component lowered the mechanical strength, as well as the affinity for water, as evidenced from an increasing contact angle. The effect of pectin was reflected in the yellowness index, whereas alginate and whey protein affected the opacity of film. Whey protein favored higher opacity, lower gas barrier values and dense structures, resulting from the polysaccharide-protein aggregates. All films displayed however good thermal stability, with degradation onset temperatures higher than 170 °C.

Abstract:This work explores the development and characterization of composite multilayer films comprising bacterial cellulose (BC) and chitosan enriched with antioxidant compounds from grape bagasse extract (GE) and glycerol. SEM images revealed a compact structure with successful interactions between BC and chitosan, confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Equilibrium moisture content, water vapor permeability (WVP), swollen capacity, and solubility were systematically investigated, unveiling the influence of glycerol and GE concentrations. Moisture content increased with elevated glycerol and GE levels, attributed to their hydrophilic nature. WVP rose with higher concentrations of hydrophilic compounds, affecting the films' permeability. Swollen capacity decreased, and solubility increased with the addition of GE and glycerol, indicating a more compact film structure. The incorporation of GE conferred antioxidant properties to the films, as evidenced by DPPH and ABTS+ assays, and Total Phenolic Content (TPC) determination. TPC values varied from 0 to 1.75 mg GAE/g dried film, depending on GE. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) highlighted polymeric associations, and UV-Vis spectra demonstrated enhanced UV-blocking properties. Overall, these multilayer films offer promising applications in food packaging, leveraging natural antioxidant sources for an enhanced functionality.
