Abstract:Quantifiable decline in the maternal body temperature during the pre-calving offers the possibilities for predicting the calving that can improve the calving management. As infrared thermography (IRT) is a simple non-contact tool for precise measurement of surface temperature, we investigated the use of IRT to establish thermal signatures around calving in the Murrah buffalo. The IRT of eye, right lateral, left lateral and rear side of udder skin surface temperature (USST) were recorded at 6 h interval from 96 h before the expected date of calving, at the time of calving and 24 h post-calving in Murrah buffaloes (n = 28). In parallel, blood samples were collected for progesterone (P 4 ) assay. The results revealed that the IRT of the eye, right and left lateral and rear side of USST showed a significant decrease in the temperature from 48 h pre-calving till the onset of calving with a ΔT (°C) of 0.56, 0.91, 0.70, and 0.90, respectively. Mean USST significantly declined from 48 h pre-calving with a ΔT of 0.85 °C. The residual temperature of both eye and various ROI of the udder also followed a similar and significant declining trend from 48 to 0 h of calving indicating that circadian influence on the USST was minimum. Plasma P 4 concentration significantly decreased from 72 h pre-calving till calving. It is concluded that a marked reduction in the IRT of the USST at 6–12 h pre-calving would be useful in predicting the onset of calving in the Murrah buffalo.

Infrared thermometry for detecting estrus and pregnancy in Holstein cows

Abstract:Efficient reproductive management is paramount in enhancing the productivity and welfare of dairy cows. This study investigates the effects of pregnancy status, seasonal variations, and diurnal shifts on the body temperature of different body parts in dairy cows. Using a structured approach, cows were categorized based on pregnancy status (pregnant vs. control) or estrous status (estrous vs. control), season (winter, spring, summer), and time of day (morning, noon, evening). The analysis revealed that pregnancy and estrous statuses significantly affect the body temperature, with pregnant and estrous cows displaying higher temperatures (39.0 ± 0.03 and 38.0 ± 0.06 °C, respectively) than controls (37.1 ± 0.06 °C; p < 0.01). Seasonal impacts were also notable, with the highest temperatures observed in summer (38.3 ± 0.07 °C) followed by spring (38.1 ± 0.09 °C) and winter (37.7 ± 0.06 °C; p < 0.01), indicating a strong environmental influence on physiological responses. Furthermore, diurnal analysis indicated temperature fluctuations throughout the day, peaking at noon (38.1 ± 0.09 °C; p < 0.05) compared to morning and evening. High positive correlations were observed between the measured temperatures in different areas and rectal and vaginal temperatures, suggesting the skin surface is ideal for assessing thermal changes. These findings underscore the critical interplay between an animal's physiological state and external environmental factors in managing dairy cow health and reproduction. The study highlights the potential of non-invasive temperature monitoring as a tool for optimizing reproductive management and underscores the necessity of accounting for environmental and physiological variations in dairy management practices.

Abstract:Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-ionizing, non-invasive technique that permits evaluating the comfort levels of animals, a topic of concern due to the growing interest in determining the state of health and welfare of production animals. The operating principle of IRT is detecting the heat irradiated in anatomical regions characterized by a high density of near-surface blood vessels that can regulate temperature gain or loss from/to the environment by modifying blood flow. This is essential for understanding the various vascular thermoregulation mechanisms of different species, such as rodents and ruminants’ tails. The usefulness of ocular, nasal, and vulvar thermal windows in the orbital (regio orbitalis), nasal (regio nasalis), and urogenital (regio urogenitalis) regions, respectively, has been demonstrated in cattle. However, recent evidence for the river buffalo has detected discrepancies in the data gathered from distinct thermal regions in these large ruminants, suggesting a limited sensitivity and specificity when used with this species due to various factors: the presence of hair, ambient temperature, and anatomical features, such as skin thickness and variations in blood supplies to different regions. In this review, a literature search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and PubMed, using keyword combinations that included “infrared thermography”, “water buffalo”, “river buffalo” “thermoregulation”, “microvascular changes”, “lacrimal caruncle”, “udder”, “mastitis”, and “nostril”. We discuss recent findings on four thermal windows—the orbital and nasal regions, mammary gland in the udder region (regio uberis), and vulvar in the urogenital region (regio urogenitalis)—to elucidate the factors that modulate and intervene in validating thermal windows and interpreting the information they provide, as it relates to the clinical usefulness of IRT for cattle (Bos) and the river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

Abstract:The overall objective of the current data report was to evaluate and test the feasibility of using infrared thermography (IRT) as a non-invasive method for measuring stress signs in lactating dairy cows during short negative challenges, such as visual isolation from herd-mates. The study was carried out at the Experimental Farm of the Research and Development Institute for Bovine Romania, on 20 Holstein-Friesian lactating multiparous dairy cows, between August and September 2022. Cows were housed in two identical tied stanchion barns (170/85 cm), and were isolated individually from the herd for 240 min post-morning milking. Our results shown significant ( p ≤ 0.05) rises for both orbital and nasal IRT temperatures following the isolation challenge, suggesting that such approaches could represent adequate tools for assessing social stress in cattle. Overall, current results are in accordance with previous studies which validated both eye and nasal regions as IRT thermal windows for studying the effects of painful and negative contexts on stress response in farmed ruminants, while considering the stress-induced hyperthermia as an integral part of the physiological response to negative stimuli, as well as the current limitations that this tool faces.

Potential utility of RSAD2 transcript and protein in early detection of pregnancy in buffaloes

Abstract:This study investigates a novel early pregnancy marker in water buffaloes, focusing on RSAD2 mRNA expression, known to be upregulated by interferon-tau (IFNT) during pregnancy. While RSAD2 is primarily recognized for its antiviral effect, we hypothesized its role as a conceptus-induced component in regulating pregnancy in buffaloes. Given its differential expression compared to other IFNT-induced genes in cows, RSAD2 may serve as a biomarker for early pregnancy detection in buffaloes. RNA, cDNA, and plasma samples were obtained from archived samples collected before insemination (d0) and at d20, d25 and d40 after insemination. Twelve RNA samples, having optimal optical density and concentration, from six pregnant and six non-pregnant buffaloes were selected. The cDNA was analyzed to measure the abundance of RSAD2 mRNA using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and plasma for protein expression analysis using Western blot. The RT-qPCR analysis showed a transcript of RSAD2 increased significantly by 7-fold and 6-fold on d20 and d25, compared to both d0 and d40 in the pregnant group only. At d20, the sensitivity of RSAD2 was 100% and the specificity was 83.3%, and at d25-d both the sensitivity and specificity was 100%, indicating low incidences of misdiagnosing early pregnancy in buffaloes. In the non-pregnant group, RSAD2 expression remained low and did not change after insemination. Western blot analysis revealed an immunoreactive RSAD2 protein band. Densitometry analysis of the RSAD2-specific protein band, based on gray mean value, showed significantly increased expression of RSAD2 at d25 compared to d0 in the pregnant group. In conclusion, these results indicated that RSAD2 expressions at both the mRNA and protein levels show promising potential for detecting pregnancy at d25 post-insemination.
Thermographic assessment of mastitis progression in sahiwal cattle: Insights into the patterns in the natural course of infection

Abstract:Mastitis is a global concern in the dairy sector, demanding innovative solutions for effective management for quality lifetime milk production. In this study, infrared thermography (IRT) as a non-invasive technology was integrated into routine farm activities for continuous health monitoring of animals. For 30 days, we systematically monitored the udder health status in 40 Sahiwal cows (160 quarters), employing IRT along with the California Mastitis Test (CMT). We also assessed somatic cell count (SCC), microbial identification, and milk quality parameters of representative samples. The thermal imaging data was analyzed, considering both backward propagation from the 0th day to the -10th day and forward propagation from the 0th day to the +10th day. Our findings revealed that on the 0th day, the mean temperatures of the udder surface skin temperature (USST) and teat skin surface temperature (TSST) exhibited differences (p < 0.05) between the quarters affected by sub-clinical mastitis (SCM) and clinical mastitis (CM) in comparison to the healthy quarters, with the highest degree of difference observed. The observed temperature differences between CM and SCM quarters compared to healthy ranged from 1.8 to 3.62 °C and 0.98 to 3.23 °C for USST, and from 1.68 to 3.16 °C and 0.56 to 2.32 °C for TSST, respectively. Furthermore, our observations indicated that both udder and teat quarters responded differently to mastitis. A temperature rise of 1.37 °C in SCM quarters and 1.75 °C in CM quarters was observed between the -10th and -8th day relative to day 0, with the increase being more pronounced in the morning hours. Also, a notable temperature surge occurred during the -2nd and -1st days relative to the 0th day. The log10SCC values and milk quality parameters significantly differed (p < 0.05) between mastitis-affected and healthy samples. In addition, Staphylococcus spp. was identified as the predominant mastitis-causing pathogen in the bacteriological identification conducted in this study. Therefore, IRT efficiently assesses the initiation point of udder infection in Sahiwal cows, aiding in effective udder health management.

Abstract:Mastitis is a global threat that challenges dairy farmers' economies worldwide. Sub-clinical mastitis (SCM) beholds the lion's share in it, as its visible clinical signs are not evident and are challenging to diagnose. The treatment of intramammary infection (IMI) demands antimicrobial therapy and subsequent milk withdrawal for a week or two. This context requires a non-invasive diagnostic tool like infrared thermography (IRT) to identify mastitis. It can form the basis of precision dairy farming. Therefore, the present study focuses on thermal imaging of the udder and teat quarters of Murrah buffaloes during different seasons to identify SCM and clinical mastitis (CM) cases using the Darvi DTL007 camera. A total of 30–45 lactating Murrah buffalo cows were screened out using IRT regularly throughout the year 2021–22. The IMI was further screened using the California mastitis test. The thermogram analysis revealed a significant difference (p < 0.01) in the mean values of the udder and teat surface temperature of Murrah buffaloes between healthy, SCM, and CM during different seasons. The mean values of udder skin surface temperature (USST) during different seasons ranged between 30.28 and 36.81 °C, 32.54 to 38.61 °C, and 34.32 to 40.02 °C among healthy, SCM, and CM-affected quarters. Correspondingly, the mean values of teat skin surface temperature (TSST) were 30.52–35.96 °C, 32.92 to 37.55 °C, and 34.51 to 39.05 °C, respectively. Further results revealed an increase (p < 0.01) in the mean values of USST during winter, summer, rainy, and autumn as 2.26, 4.04; 2.19, 3.35; 1.80, 3.21; 1.45, 2.64 °C and TSST as 2.40, 3.99; 2.28, 3.26; 1.59, 3.09, 1.68, 2.92 °C of SCM, CM-affected quarters to healthy quarters, respectively. The highest incidence of SCM was observed during autumn and CM during winter. Henceforth, irrespective of the seasons studied in the present study, IRT is an efficient, supportive tool for the early identification of SCM.

Advancing mastitis assessment in dairy bovines via short milking tube thermography: A seasonal perspective

Abstract:In India, where dairy production leads globally, infrared thermography (IRT) and short milking tube thermography specifically are vital for managing mastitis. Therefore, the present study focuses on thermal imaging of the udder and short milking tube (SMT) of the milking machine during the peak milking process of Sahiwal cows and Murrah buffaloes during winter, summer, rainy and autumn seasons to identify sub-clinical (SCM) and clinical mastitis (CM) cases using the Darvi DTL007 camera. The udder health was assessed using the California Mastitis Test, Somatic Cell Count (SCC) and IRT throughout the year. Log10SCC and thermogram analysis revealed a difference (p < 0.01) between healthy, SCM, and CM cases during different seasons in both breeds. Further results showed an increase (p < 0.01) in SMT thermograms of SCM and CM cases compared to healthy quarters in Sahiwal cows during winter, summer, rainy, and autumn were 4.26 and 7.51, 2.37 and 4.47, 2.20 and 3.64, 2.90 and 4.94 ºC, respectively and for Murrah buffaloes were 3.56 and 5.55, 2.70 and 3.81, 1.72 and 3.10, 3.14 and 4.42ºC, respectively. The highest degree of increase in milking udder skin surface temperature and SMT of SCM and CM cases compared to healthy quarters was observed during the winter and the least during the rainy season. Thus, regardless of the seasons examined in this study, SMT thermograms effectively assessed SCM and CM.

Abstract:Among the health issues of major concern in dairy ruminants, mastitis stands out as being associated with considerable losses in productivity and compromised animal health and welfare. Currently, the available methods for the early detection of mastitis are either inaccurate, requiring further validation, or expensive and labor intensive. Moreover, most of them cannot be applied at the point of care. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a rapid, non-invasive technology that can be used in situ to measure udder temperature and identify variations and inconsistencies thereof, serving as a benchmarking tool for the assessment of udders' physiological and/or health status. Despite the numerous applications in livestock farming, IRT is still underexploited due to the lack of standardized operation procedures and significant gaps regarding the optimum settings of the thermal cameras, which are currently exploited on a case-specific basis. Therefore, the objective of this review paper was twofold: first, to provide the state of knowledge on the applications of IRT for the assessment of udder health status in dairy ruminants, and second, to summarize and discuss the major strengths and weaknesses of IRT application at the point of care, as well as future challenges and opportunities of its extensive adoption for the diagnosis of udder health status and control of mastitis at the animal and herd levels.

Abstract:Abstract Procedures including teeth clipping (TEE), tail docking (TAI), and ear tagging (TAG) are conducted routinely in commercial pig production units during the first days of life in piglets. However, as these procedures are conducted without anesthetics, there is controversy surrounding these procedures due to the pain/stress they may cause. The assessment of vasomotor activity using non-invasive infrared thermography (IRT) is increasingly being promoted as a tool to detect acute stress. The objective of this study was to assess changes in the ocular (OCU) window of piglets before, during and after each of the aforementioned procedures using IRT. This study used crossbred piglets (n = 116; Duroc Danish x Landrace x Large white) from multiparous sows. All thermographic images of piglets were taken between 0900 h and 1600 h using a high-resolution handheld infrared camera FLIR T650sc (640 x 480 pixels; FLIR Systems, Wilsonville, USA) at a uniform distance of 1 m on the left side of the face. To assess TEE, TAI and TAG procedures separately, a recovery period (12 ± 2.5 min) was allowed between procedures. Due to order differences in which procedures were conducted, the following study groups were created (procedures in brackets indicate the procedures performed prior to the focal procedure): TEE, (TEE+) TAI, (TEE+TAI+) TAG, TAI, (TAI+) TEE, (TAI+TEE+) TAG, TAG, (TAG+) TEE, (TAG+TEE+) TAI. Temperature values were recorded from images using FLIR Tools software 6.0 (FLIR Systems). Data were analyzed using a linear mixed model for repeated measures and multiple comparisons were calculated using a post-hoc Tukey test (GraphPad Prism 10.0.2). Table 1 shows the mean and standard deviation (SD) values for IRT recordings in the OCU window. Comparison of evaluation times showed a significant reduction in OCU temperature from before to after the procedure(s) in (TEE+) TAI (-1.21 °C, P < 0.001), (TAI+TEE+) TAG (-0.65 °C, P < 0.001), TAG (-0.58 °C, P < 0.05) and (TAG+TEE+) TAI (-0.3 °C, P < 0.01) groups. These changes in the OCU window of piglets may be in response to the procedures performed, resulting in a sympathetically mediated acute vasomotor response as cutaneous capillary blood flow shifts due to transient peripheral vasoconstriction. In turn, IRT detects this blood flow change as a reduction in surface temperature. Comparison between procedure groups found that mean OCU temperature during the procedure was greater (P = 0.01) in (TAI+) TEE and (TAG+) TEE than the rest of the groups, though the reason for this is unclear and requires further investigation. This work shows that IRT can be used as a non-invasive tool to detect surface temperature changes of piglets.

Abstract:Infrared thermography lends countless applications in biology and veterinary science. The popularity of the use of infrared imaging in the detection and mitigation of animal diseases has increased recently because of its non-invasiveness, ease of automation and keen sensitivity. The current review addresses the applicability of thermographic imaging for the diagnosis of common swine diseases viz. Foot and Mouth Disease, lameness, respiratory diseases and diarrhoea. Infrared scanning confirmed the increase in temperature of the body parts of infected animals compared to the normal animals. Besides this, the review also addresses the use of IRT technology in numerous conditions like detection of ovulation, male fertility, stress level, meat quality, population size etc. Because of its ease of handling, it can be implemented as a first-line screening tool in disease diagnosis. However, further research on the use of a thermal camera for pig health screening is still obligatory for confirmed diagnostic results.
Profiling the dynamic variations in body and scrotal surface temperatures of goats reared under stressful conditions using infrared thermography: Analytical perspectives

Abstract:Infrared thermography (IRT) is an essential non-invasive method for analyzing surface temperature variations in animals, offering valuable insights into livestock stress responses. Despite their resilience, goats can face significant challenges under extreme conditions like heat-stress and water deprivation. This experiment aimed to delineate the dynamic variations in whole-body and scrotal surface temperatures in goats subjected to the combined impact of both conditions using IRT. Eight healthy Aardi bucks were exposed to three 72-h treatments: euhydration, dehydration, and rehydration. Continuous meteorological monitoring provided ambient-temperature, relative-humidity, and temperature-humidity index (THI) values. Surface temperatures were measured twice daily at 08:00 and 15:00, and thermal gradients between ambient and body or scrotal surface temperatures were computed. Based on the obtained mean THI values, the bucks experienced heat-stress throughout the experiment. Additionally, results revealed noticeable variations in both surface temperatures across treatments and time points, indicated by measures of central tendency, variability, shape descriptors, and frequency distribution of temperature. Morning measurements indicated lower temperatures and gradients under euhydration, while water deprivation led to higher temperatures and compromised thermal regulation. Conversely, afternoon data showed higher variability in temperature responses, highlighting the compounded effect of diurnal heat-stress and water deprivation. Although water-restoration mitigated some effects of deprivation, it did not fully restore thermal homeostasis to euhydrated levels. Thermal gradients further emphasized the goats' dynamic thermoregulatory mechanisms, which were compromised under water deprivation, particularly in the scrotal region, but were partially restored upon restoration. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of IRT in assessing thermal responses in goats and underscore the importance of adequate hydration for maintaining thermal balance under heat-stress. The herein performed profiling provides valuable insights with implications for overall health, reproductive efficiency, productivity, and welfare in heat-stressed and water-deprived goats, which might offer a framework for future research on livestock adaptation to such challenging environmental conditions.
Reliability of udder infrared thermography as a non-invasive technology for early detection of sub-clinical mastitis in Sahiwal (Bos indicus) cows under semi-intensive production system

Abstract:The present study focused on Sahiwal cows, a prominent milch breed in tropical India, to correlate udder temperature with physiological markers of stress and inflammation during subclinical mastitis (SCM). The primary goal was to assess the potential of udder infrared thermography for the early detection of SCM under the semi-intensive production. Cows were categorized based on milk somatic cell counts (SCC), with healthy (H) cows having SCC <2 × 105 cells/mL and no history of mastitis, and cows with subclinical mastitis (SCM) and initial stages of clinical mastitis (CM) having quarter milk SCC of 2-5 × 105 and >5 × 105 cells/mL, respectively. Firstly, udder thermograms were analysed for udder skin surface temperature (USST), teat skin surface temperature (TSST), and teat apex temperature (TAT) using Fluke software to determine the optimal site for temperature measurement during intramammary infection. Secondly, milk samples were collected for automatic estimation of compositional changes, electrical conductivity, and pH. Thirdly, milk whey was separated for quantifying stress and inflammatory indicators, including cortisol, prolactin, and acute-phase proteins (APPs): milk amyloid A and milk haptoglobin using bovine-specific ELISA kits. Significant increases (p < 0.01) in USST, TSST, TAT, cortisol, and APPs were observed in SCM and CM compared to healthy cows, while prolactin levels decreased (p < 0.01). The correlation matrix revealed strong positive correlations of SCC with USST (r = 0.84, p < 0.01). In ROC analysis, USST demonstrated cut-off values of 37.74 and 39.58 °C, with accuracy (p < 0.05) of 98% for SCM and 95% for CM, surpassing both TAT and TSST. Therefore, the combination of these non-invasive methods increases the reliability and accuracy of infrared thermography for early detection of SCM, providing valuable insights for the development of a protocol for routine screening and udder health monitoring in indigenous dairy cows.

Abstract:A major objective of this study is to identify factors influencing the quality of high-moisture total mixed rations (TMRs) for livestock feed and explore possible manipulations that can enhance their fermentation characteristics and stability in order to address the problem of poor aerobic stability. Therefore, the current study utilized infrared thermography (IRT) to assess the aerobic stability of water-added TMRs in the feed bunker. By manipulating the moisture content of freshly prepared TMRs at four different levels through water addition and subjecting it to storage at two consistent temperatures, significant correlations between IRT values (center temperature (CT) and maximum temperature difference (MTD)) and key parameters such as lactic acid bacteria, water-soluble carbohydrates, and TMR pH were established. The first and second principal components together accounted for 44.3% of the variation, with the first component's load influenced by IRT parameters, fermentation characteristics, and air exposure times, while the second component's load was influenced by dry matter content and lactic acid concentration. The results of these studies indicate the possibility that feeding methods can be optimized by identifying portions with higher CT or MTD data using IRT measurements just before feeding dairy cows in the field. As a result, increasing the use of IRT in feed management and preservation processes is projected to have a positive impact on animal productivity in the future.

Abstract:Animal body temperature is closely related to its metabolism and life activities, which can reflect the physiological and health status of animals. The body temperature of animals changes correspondingly when they undergo disease, specific physiological stages, or the external environment changes. Measuring animal body temperature enables in-depth analysis of animal health and a better understanding of the physiological changes that occur in animals. As a non-invasive measurement technology, infrared thermography (IRT) can eliminate the stress reaction of animals caused by contact temperature measurement and has been gradually applied in the research and application of animal temperature measurement. This paper summarized the current research achievements of IRT in animal temperature detection, sketched the principle and data processing methods of IRT temperature measurement, and summarized and analyzed the application cases of IRT for disease detection (mastitis, viral infection, hoof health assessment), thermoregulation under extreme temperature conditions (heat resistance, heat loss, heat stress), and estrus detection. In addition, the problems faced by IRT in the application of animal temperature detection and the future development trend were also discussed.

Abstract:The trial aimed to investigate the use of infrared thermography (IRT) to estimate enteric methane production in dairy heifers. The study lasted 5 days with 36 Gyr, Gyr x Holstein and Holstein heifers. The sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique was used to estimate methane emission. Superficial body temperature was obtained with an infrared camera (FLIR® T300) on each side of the animals at 20-minute intervals during eight hours after the morning feeding. Data were analysed using Pearson's correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis, as well as two multivariate tests to investigate the relationship with methane emission. The analysis considered all the data together (total) and three subsets: initial (0–150 minutes), middle (150–300) and final period (300–442 minutes after feeding). Based on R2 and canonical correlations, the best predictive capacity of methane emission by IRT occurred in the initial and final periods after feeding. Infrared thermography may be a good estimator of methane emission using the SF6-tracer technique when considering the flanks' temperature.

The Relationship between the Infrared Eye Temperature of Beef Cattle and Associated Biological Responses at High Environmental Temperatures

Abstract:Cattle in regions with high ambient temperatures are at risk of heat stress. Early detection is important to allow action to be taken to minimise the risks to cattle exposed to thermal stress. This study aimed to investigate the impact of heat stress on IRT-Eye temperature and its association with the behavioural and physiological responses of heat-stressed Angus steers (n = 24) on finisher and or substituted diets. Overall, 2 cohorts of 12 Angus steers were individually housed in a climate-controlled facility to examine responses to heat stress when fed on a standard finisher diet, based on a high percentage of cereal grains, and on a substituted diet in which 8% of the grains were replaced by an isoenergetic amount of lucerne hay. Exposing feedlot cattle to hot environmental conditions increased IRT-Eye temperature, which had a strong association with behaviour and physiology. There was no evidence of differences between the different dietary cohorts. The cattle with increased IRT-Eye temperature showed stress-related responses, including a downward-facing head, ears directed backwards, and other indicators of heat stress such as increased panting, standing, and increased rumen temperature. The strong association of IRT-Eye temperature with stress-related behaviours, as well as with rumen temperature and panting behaviour, highlights the potential for IRT-Eye to be utilised as a non-invasive tool to assess cattle responses in hot conditions.

Abstract:To evaluate the use of infrared thermography to assess the thermal status of heat-stressed and water-deprived Capra hircus, full-body surface temperature (TS) and six other body-thermal variables [core, rectal (TR), and skin (TSK) temperatures, respiratory and heart rates, and total body-thermal gradient (core-to-ambient, BTG)] were measured after three days of euhydration (EU), dehydration (DE), and rehydration (RE). Results revealed that the combined effect of heat stress and water deprivation had affected all tested variables including the TS, and once these animals gained access to water in the RE stage variables returned to their EU levels. Moreover, there were positive correlations between TS and all variables with the exception of BTG. From these six variables, only three variables (i.e. the TR, TSK, and BTG) during the DE stage and two variables (i.e. the TSK and BTG) throughout the experimental stages showed higher constancy (R2 ≥ 0 75, P < 0 001; agreement intervals ±1 96 95 % CI) with TS. However, BTG appeared more closely correlated with TS, representing the body-thermal status more realistically than other variables. In effect, the mean and thresholds of the BTG were predicted using the recorded TS and were within 0.02 °C of original estimates. Collectively, these findings show that infrared thermography is appropriate for assessing body-thermal status, and thus the welfare, of these animals under the three conditions studied, and conclude that full-body TS can be a surrogate proxy for BTG in these animals. Further experiments are needed to adequately examine the reproducibility of these results under biometeorologically-simulated environments and natural habitats.

Abstract:Artificial insemination (AI) success in bovine reproduction is vital for the cattle industry's economic sustainability and for advancing the understanding of reproductive physiology. Identify high-fertile animals' fertility is a complex task due to multifactorial traits, including hormonal, age-related, and body condition factors. Early high-fertility identification is crucial for timely interventions and enhancing AI success. In this study, we present the potential use of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy on blood serum for early identification of high-fertile Nellore female cows for AI protocols. Blood serum FTIR spectra were obtained from Nellore female cows before AI. FTIR spectra underwent data analysis and the results demonstrated successful discrimination between animals that exhibit pregnant and non-pregnant diagnoses 30 days after AI. FTIR spectra revealed consistent vibrational modes, emphasizing Amide I and II bands. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) effectively segregated groups based on molecular information. Linear SVM with C = 10 and 4 PCs achieved 100% accuracy in the group classification. This innovative approach using FTIR spectroscopy and ML algorithms offers a promising means of high-fertile cow identification, potentially improving AI outcomes in Nellore cattle. The study presents valuable insights into advancements in reproductive management practices for this economically significant breed.
