Abstract:Despite thorough exploration of the acidity properties and pore structure effects of zeolite catalysts on catalytic conversion, a comprehensive understanding of how these factors influence reaction pathways is still lacking. Herein, three common zeolites (ZSM-5, ZSM-22 and ZSM-48) of different shapes and size dimensions were introduced into catalytic conversion of isobutane, with combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption and desorption, solid-state 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, ammonia temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) and pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy (Py-FTIR) to characterize their structure and acidity. And channels and topologies were associated with stability and catalytic activity. ZSM-5 performed best, showing the most active sites. Furthermore, ZSM-48 led to an increase in the propene yield by suppressing inhibitory secondary reactions in the monomolecular reaction pathway. Moreover, the amount of Brønsted acid sites (BASs) of ZSM-22 were a key factor in promoting light alkene formation. However, 1D channels contributed to the deactivation of ZSM-22 and ZSM-48. The detailed reaction pathways of zeolite catalysts with diverse pore structures and acidities are crucial for optimizing their catalytic performance.
Seeds Combining Pyrrolidine Control the Framework Al Distribution of FER Zeolite to Enhance Its Performance in the Skeletal Isomerization of n-Butene

Abstract:FER zeolites have a unique framework structure and acid distribution, and are widely studied as a catalyst for reactions such as n-butene skeletal isomerization and dimethyl ether carbonylation. The Brönsted acid site (BAS) located in the 10-member ring (10-MR) of FER zeolites serves as the active site for the isomerization reaction of skeletal n-butene to produce isobutene. This study prepared five types of FER zeolites using different methods: using pyrrolidine (PY) alone as a template; using Na-form FER as seeds (SN) or H-form FER as seeds without organic structure directing agents (OSDAs); and combining the seeds of SN or SH with PY as OSDAs. The differences in the structure and acid distribution of the five zeolites were investigated, as well as their catalytic performance for the skeletal isomerization of n-butene. Experiments and characterization results showed that under hydrothermal synthesis conditions, the FER-PY+SH zeolites synthesized by using both H-form zeolites seeds and pyridine exhibited the highest aluminum concentrations at T1 and T3 sites, along with the greatest BAS located in the 10-MR. This unique composition contributed to the highest selectivity of isobutene. The FER-PY+SH catalyst was continuously used for 720 h at 350 °C, 0.1 MPa, and an n-butene mass space velocity of 2.0 h−1 for three cycles of 2160 h. During this period, the conversion of n-butene was over 39%, while the selectivity of isobutene exceeded 95%. The FER-PY+SH catalyst exhibited excellent stability and activity.

Abstract:Some solid acids, including sulfated zirconia and certain industrial isomerization catalysts, catalyze two types of n-butane isomerizations, avoiding primary carbenium ions or carbonium ions: (1) an internal rearrangement of the C atoms in n-butane and (2) skeletal isomerization of n-butane to iso-butane. No superacid sites are required for these reactions. The skeletal isomerization is an intermolecular reaction, involving a C8 intermediate. Easily accessible Brønsted acid sites and small amounts of olefin are crucial. Spectroscopic examination of the acid sites on sulfated zirconia shows that they are not stronger than the acid sites in zeolites such as HY. The butane isomerization rate is suppressed by CO, even when no CO is adsorbed on Lewis sites; formation of oxocarbenium ions is likely. The decisive role of Brønsted acid sites is demonstrated by results on deuterated catalysts.
Studies on n-butane isomerization reaction on solid oxide super acid Pt-SO4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 catalysts

Abstract:The composite solid oxide super acid Pt-SO4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared, and its structure, surface properties and catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction were investigated by XRD, XPS, SEM, FT-IR. The results showed that the optimum A12O3 loading in the catalyst made ZrO2 tetragonal phase stable, prevented the transformation of ZrO2 from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase. Pt doping on SO 4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 improved the catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction. When the content of Al was 1.5% in the catalyst, the yield of i-butane was 37%, and its selectivity reached 70% above.

Abstract:Directional adjusting of the distribution of Brønsted acid site (BAS) in zeolite to control its catalytic performance is highly attractive but remains challenging. This study aims to tailor the distribution of BAS in 8-membered ring (B8-MR) of H-Mordenite (HMOR) by adding aniline or p-phenylenediamine as additives to the sol‐gel. The results reveal that the number of B8-MR is significantly increased but with a slight change in the number of BAS in 12-membered ring channels. When using dimethyl ether (DME) carbonylation as the probe reaction, the conversion of DME to methyl acetate over the synthesized HMOR zeolite is increased by nearly 2 times. Our finding not only provides a facile strategy to regulate the acid distribution in different channels of the HMOR zeolite but also offers a promising candidate for the catalytic DME carbonylation, which is a critical intermediate step for ethanol synthesis from syngas.

Abstract:A strategy has been developed for the synthesis of ferrierite (FER) zeolites possessing strong acid sites (SAS) with different strength by using silica sol modified by different amounts of hydrochloric acid (HCl) as silicon source. The effect of HCl-modified silica sol on FER zeolite was investigated by XRD, ICP-AES, SEM, N2 adsorption–desorption, NH3-TPD and Py-IR. Moreover, some typical samples were evaluated in the reaction of 1-butene skeletal isomerization and the coke properties of the deactivated samples were analyzed by TG-MS and Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that FER zeolite possessing weak SAS has excellent catalytic performance in the reaction of skeletal isomerization of 1-butene. Whereas FER zeolite with moderate SAS exhibits poor stability. By contrast, FER zeolite exhibiting SAS with high strength is easy to promote oligomerization-cracking reaction and reduce isobutene selectivity. Conversely, these findings also confirmed the effectiveness of the strategy for controlling the strength of SAS of FER zeolite.

Abstract:In hydroisomerization over metal-zeolite bifunctional catalysts, the properties of Brønsted acid sites (BASs) of zeolites and the metal-acid synergetic effects are crucial to catalytic performance. Here, by locating Pt sites on Al2O3, apart from the BAS inside ZSM-5, an efficient Pt/Al2O3+ZSM-5 catalyst was achieved. It was observed that the pore mouth catalysis played an essential role in selective formation of C6 isomers via inhibiting the undesired cracking caused by the strong BAS sites inside the micropores of zeolite.

Abstract:Acidic zeolites are effective catalysts for the cracking of large hydrocarbon molecules into lower molecular weight products required for transportation fuels. However, the ways in which the zeolite structure affects the catalytic activity at Brønsted protons are not fully understood. One way to characterize the influence of the zeolite structure on the catalysis is to study alkane cracking and dehydrogenation at very low conversion, conditions for which the kinetics are well defined. To understand the effects of zeolite structure on the measured rate coefficient (kapp ), it is necessary to identify the equilibrium constant for adsorption into the reactant state (Kads-H+ ) and the intrinsic rate coefficient of the reaction (kint ) at reaction temperatures, since kapp is proportional to the product of Kads-H+ and kint . We show that Kads-H+ cannot be calculated from experimental adsorption data collected near ambient temperature, but can, however, be estimated accurately from configurational-bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) simulations. Using monomolecular cracking and dehydrogenation of C3 -C6 alkanes as an example, we review recent efforts aimed at elucidating the influence of the acid site location and the zeolite framework structure on the observed values of kapp and its components, Kads-H+ and kint .
Synergistic roles of B/L acids and hierarchical micro-mesoporous structures for the unexpected isomerization of β-pinene over dual-modified MOR zeolite by inorganic/organic bases

Abstract:The isomerization of β-pinene is an important reaction to synthesize spices, such as camphene, limonene, terpinene, and terpinolene, among which terpinene and terpinolene are particularly difficult to be obtained. Herein, MOR zeolite modified by both inorganic base (NaOH) and organic base (TEAOH) was conducted, which showed high catalytic activity for the isomerization of β-pinene to high-added value spices of terpinene and terpinolene. Different from the zeolite catalyst modified by solely inorganic base or organic base, both high conversion of β-pinene and high selectivity for terpinene and terpinolene could be achieved over the dual-modified zeolite catalyst. Based on the various characterizations, catalytic reaction results and comparison studies, the roles of inorganic base and organic base were revealed and possible reaction mechanism was described. The modification by inorganic base was mainly to introduce additional mesopores in the MOR zeolite, which had important influence on the conversion of β-pinene through accelerating the diffusion and mass transfer of various bulky organic molecules in the reaction system. The modification by organic base was mainly to tune the Brønsted/Lewis (B/L) acid property, which had important impact on the selectivity of products. In contrast, the zeolite modified by solely inorganic base mainly showed Lewis acidity, which led to camphene and limonene as the main products; the zeolite modified by solely organic base mainly showed Brønsted acidity, which produced camphene, terpinene and terpinolene as the main products. The dual-modified zeolite catalyst by inorganic/organic bases could achieve 99.5% conversion of β-pinene with the total selectivity for terpinene and terpinolene as high as 70.9%. In addition, the catalyst showed high reaction-recycling stability, which could maintain the catalytic performance up to 10 recycles.

A Supramolecular View on the Cooperative Role of Brønsted and Lewis Acid Sites in Zeolites for Methanol Conversion

Abstract:A systematic molecular level and spectroscopic investigation is presented to show the cooperative role of Brønsted acid and Lewis acid sites in zeolites for the conversion of methanol. Extra-framework alkaline-earth metal containing species and aluminum species decrease the number of Brønsted acid sites, as protonated metal clusters are formed. A combined experimental and theoretical effort shows that postsynthetically modified ZSM-5 zeolites, by incorporation of extra-framework alkaline-earth metals or by demetalation with dealuminating agents, contain both mononuclear [MOH]+ and double protonated binuclear metal clusters [M(μ-OH)2M]2+ (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and HOAl). The metal in the extra-framework clusters has a Lewis acid character, which is confirmed experimentally and theoretically by IR spectra of adsorbed pyridine. The strength of the Lewis acid sites (Mg > Ca > Sr > Ba) was characterized by a blue shift of characteristic IR peaks, thus offering a tool to sample Lewis acidity experimentally. The incorporation of extra-framework Lewis acid sites has a substantial influence on the reactivity of propene and benzene methylations. Alkaline-earth Lewis acid sites yield increased benzene methylation barriers and destabilization of typical aromatic intermediates, whereas propene methylation routes are less affected. The effect on the catalytic function is especially induced by the double protonated binuclear species. Overall, the extra-framework metal clusters have a dual effect on the catalytic function. By reducing the number of Brønsted acid sites and suppressing typical catalytic reactions in which aromatics are involved, an optimal propene selectivity and increased lifetime for methanol conversion over zeolites is obtained. The combined experimental and theoretical approach gives a unique insight into the nature of the supramolecular zeolite catalyst for methanol conversion which can be meticulously tuned by subtle interplay of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites.

Abstract:The spatial proximity between Bronsted acid sites (BAS) in HZSM-5 zeolites is demonstrated by H-1 double quantum (DO) MAS NMR measurements. This proximity results in more pronounced polarization of adsorbed acetone and alkanes in zeolites, evident from C-13 MAS NMR spectra. The adjacent BAS with synergistic interactions on alkane reactants (propane, n-butane, and n-pentane) cooperatively catalyze alkane cracking at higher turnover rates than on isolated BAS. Apparent activation energies are similar on HZSM-5 catalysts with different concentrations of isolated and adjacent BAS, while apparent activation entropies become less negative at higher BAS concentrations. Kinetic experiments in conjunction with adsorption measurement and DFT calculations prove that cracking rates at these Al-site pairs are mainly due to more positive intrinsic activation entropies, suggesting that the protonation transition state occurs later along the reaction coordinate on adjacent BAS. Adjacent Bronsted acid sites favor cracking over dehydrogenation and favor central cracking over terminal cracking. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Controlling the dispersion and position of metal active sites in bifunctional metal-acid zeolite catalysts is essential for achieving synergy between the metal and acid sites in tandem catalytic processes, but still challenging nowadays. Herein, we propose an approach to modulate the dispersion and position of Pt particles in ZSM-5 zeolite by employing various types of organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) in the one-pot synthesis procedure. Systematic characterizations show that the OSDAs mainly influence the encapsulation of the Pt precursor into the ZSM-5 zeolite crystallites during the hydrothermal crystallization process, resulting in discrepancies in the dispersion and spatial distribution of Pt sites in the final Pt-zeolite catalysts. Comparative studies on different Pt-zeolite catalysts show that the formation of subnanometer Pt clusters and the close spatial proximity of Pt and Br & Oslash;nsted acid sites in the zeolite efficiently promote the tandem dehydrogenation-alkylation process and enhance the production rate of ethylbenzene in the direct ethane-benzene coupling reaction. This study offers insights into the design and synthesis of bifunctional metal-zeolite catalysts for tandem catalysis.
Enhancement of the dimethyl ether carbonylation activation via regulating acid sites distribution in FER zeolite framework

Abstract:The carbonylation of dimethyl ether (DME) with CO is a key step for ethanol synthesis from syngas, but traditional mordenite (MOR) zeolite shows low catalytic stability. Herein, various FER zeolite nanosheets were prepared with four types of organic templates. The catalytic performance of FER in DME carbonylation is strongly dependent on the location of strong acid site in framework, which can be effectively regulated by altering organic template. FER-MORP sample synthesized with morpholine shows the highest DME conversion of 53%, thus, giving a methyl acetate space-time yield (STYMA) of 0.889 mmol g-1 h-1. DFT calculation, NH3-IR, 1H/27Al/29Si MAS NMR, and in situ DRIFTS results indicate that morpholine directs more Al species, or strong Brønsted acid sites (BAS), to locate in 8-membered ring (8-MR) channels, which not only enhances carbonylation activity but also suppresses formation of coke species. The catalytic performance is well maintained within 4 repeated recycles (∼460 h).

Abstract:The effect of the amount of Brønsted acid sites with their strengths on bare and palladium-modified H-ZSM5 and H-Ferrierite on the catalytic activity in the esterification of acetic acid with methanol was investigated by comparing the variation of Brønsted acid site strength. The strong acid sites on zeolites are responsible for the low reaction rate of esterification and low selectivity to methyl acetate by the strong adsorption properties of reactants. The stronger Brønsted acid site strengths, which are more abundant on bare H-Ferrierite than H-ZSM5, were properly modified with Pd promoter without significant loss of total acid sites. The esterification rates were largely increased with a concomitant increase of methyl acetate selectivity after Pd modification. The strongly adsorbed methoxy species by forming surface dimeric alcohols can be attributed to the suppressed rate of esterification. The roles of Brønsted acid sites and their strengths to catalytic activity were verified through NH3-TPD and adsorbed pyridine or methanol through FT-IR analyses.

Abstract:Microporous solid acid catalysts are widely used in industrial hydrocarbon transformations in both the fuels and petrochemical industries. The specific choice of microporous framework often dictates the acidic properties of the system, such as acid site strength and concentration. In this work we have explored the influence of acid site concentration on butane isomerisation activity and the mechanistic pathway by controlling the quantity of magnesium doped into an aluminophosphate, keeping the acid site strength and framework topology constant. By combining experimental kinetic studies, and theoretical mechanistic studies, we conclude that isobutane formation, from n -butane, predominantly proceeds through a bimolecular pathway. Specifically, the activity of the system is strongly linked to the presence of alkenes, and herein the precise mechanistic roles of the alkenes are explored.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of methylcyclohexane was studied on four specially designed HZSM-5 zeolites. A careful steam treatment was used to produce pair-sites composed of a Lewis acid site, due to extra-framework Al species from the dealumination by steaming, and a Bronsted acid site, due to bridging hydroxyl in the steamed HZSM-5. The spatial proximity of these component acid sites of the pair-site was verified by H-1 double quantum magic spinning NMR. Product selectivities of methylcyclohexane conversion showed the same trend for all the samples, which indicated that the pores of the zeolites were not changed by the steam treatment. The Lewis acid site that was created, however, gave a synergistic effect with the Bronsted acid site in the pair-site, which gave higher conversions and cracking rates of methylcyclohexane. The rate of methylcyclohexane conversion increased with increased concentration of extra-framework Al, which gave more pair-sites. Abstract:Catalytic re-forming of lignite pyrolysis volatiles to aromatics over zeolites is a promising method for value-added utilization of coal tar. However, to achieve a significant enhancement in both the yields of light aromatics and the catalytic lifetime by adjusting the structure of ZSM-5 zeolite and to understand its catalytic mechanism comprehensively are still great challenges. Herein, a self-assembled hierarchical core–shell with controlled mesopores and acidity as well as an ultrathin nonacidic protective shell was synthesized through a mild hydrothermal method of alkaline treatment with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide or tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH or TEAOH). Both the number and pore size distribution of mesopores can be regulated by adjusting the hydrothermal treatment time. These generated mesopores not only facilitate the mass transfer of reactants and products but also improve the utilization efficiency of the acid site. In addition, the newly fabricated nonacidic shell, which coats on the surface of ZSM-5 as a chain mail, plays a critical role in suppressing the coke formation by passivation of the acid sites on the external surface. In this work, the pore properties and acid distribution of ZSM-5 zeolite can be regulated synchronously through a desilication–recrystallization process. In addition, enhanced yields of light aromatics and catalytic lifetime were obtained simultaneously. Formation and Regeneration of Shape-Selective ZSM-35 Catalysts for n-Butene Skeletal Isomerization to Isobutene

Abstract:Skeletal isomerization of n-butene to isobutene was performed over formed ZSM-35 zeolites in a lab-scale, fixed-bed reactor. The formation conditions to produce isobutene with zeolites were varied to determine the most advantageous binding agent (pseudo-boehmite) amount and steam dealumination conditions. The optimal binding agent amount was 20 wt %. Steam dealumination stabilized the catalysts and enhanced the catalytic performance because of the stable Si/Al framework and suitable acidity. The optimized process conditions involved a reaction temperature of 410 °C, a weight hourly space velocity of 5 h–1, and an n-butene concentration in feedstock of 50%. After being on-stream for 296 h, the catalysts were stable and were able to be regenerated with a comparable catalytic performance. An isobutene yield of 33–43 wt % was achieved, and the selectivity of isobutene was higher than 90% after the reaction was carried out for longer than 15 h. Carbon deposition modified the pore structure to enhance the selectivity of isobutene because of the selective shape effect. This study shows promising results for future industrialization of the skeletal isomerization of n-butene to isobutene in the presence of optimized ZSM-35 catalysts.

Abstract:Mordenite zeolite is now the most promising catalyst for the carbonylation of dimethyl ether (DME) to methyl acetate because of the excellent initial activity and selectivity, but it suffers from rapid deactivation because of the carbonaceous deposits. It is generally accepted that coking at Brønsted acid sites (BASs) in the 12-membered ring (B12-MR) leads to the limited catalytic lifetime. However, contradictory deactivation behaviors in some cases inspire us to reveal the deactivation mechanism in DME carbonylation, which is essential for further industrialization of this important process. Herein, we mainly focus on dissecting the role of BASs in the 8-membered ring (B8-MR) and B12-MR in deactivation. We precisely modulated the concentration of BASs in different channels and confirmed the contribution of B8-MR to coke formation. Based on the speculated mechanism of deactivation, kinetic studies were performed together with in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and temperature programmed oxidation-mass spectroscopy to determine the predominant deactivation pathway during the early stage of DME carbonylation and the specific roles of BASs especially in 8-MR were identified. Abstract:Although more than 250 different zeolites/zeo-type materials have been discovered to date, the industrial catalyst catalog of the zeolite-catalyzed methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) process is only limited to ZSM-5 (MFI topology with a 10-membered ring (MR)) and SAPO-34 (CHA topology with 8-MR). Herein, the zeolite FER, in principle, could be an attractive alternative as it owns a two-dimensional interconnecting channel system, where a 10-MR channel is perpendicular to the 8-MR channel. However, a shorter lifetime over commercial and literature-reported synthesized FER (avg. 1 hour) is a grave concern. We have strategically integrated material design and catalysis optimization with advanced characterization to improve the catalyst durability of the zeolite FER-catalyzed MTH process. Herein, we report a unique flake-shaped FER (f-FER) zeolite with optimized physicochemical properties that led to a superior lifetime (∼3 hours) to commercial FER (∼1 hour). Upon combining f-FER zeolite with Y 2 O 3 , an unprecedented catalyst lifespan (∼20 hours) was accomplished with a preferential selectivity for C 4 –C 7 hydrocarbons. Minimizing the involvement of formaldehyde during the early stages of the MTH process favors the alkene cycle over the arene cycle, eventually extending the catalyst lifetime.
