Abstract:Purpose: An emergency rescue situation is an inevitable challenge in medical work, requiring collaborative efforts from healthcare professionals. Due to a lack of practical experience, novice nurses may encounter difficulties in successfully managing emergency resuscitation events. This study aimed to analyse the authentic psychological experiences of novice nurses participating in emergency resuscitation events by exploring applicable coping methods and management strategies. Methods: This study utilized a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative research method. We employed purposive sampling to select 27 Novice nurses from West China Hospital of Sichuan University for face-to-face semistructured interviews. Data collection for this study was conducted from November 2023 to January 2024. The interviews were fully audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data were coded, categorized and summarized with the help of Nvivo 20.0 software based on the interpretation of phenomenological research methods. Thematic analysis was performed to deeply analyse and extract corresponding themes. The COREQ criteria were used to guide the reporting of this study. Results: The authentic psychological experiences of novice nurses participating in emergency rescue events mainly include six aspects: lack of rescue knowledge reserves and related abilities, psychological and emotional changes, psychological stress after the rescue, rational arrangement of manpower, team cooperation, and postevent reflection and learning. Their authentic psychological experiences directly affect whether novice nurses can effectively respond to emergency rescue events. Conclusions: This study suggested enhancing novice nurses' knowledge, improving their resuscitation skills, and improving their psychological well-being during resuscitation events. It advocates for organized staffing, effective teamwork, and robust support systems to empower novice nurses and improve their overall capabilities in emergencies. These findings offer valuable insights for future research in this area.

Abstract:The physical mapping of six ts mutations of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is presented. The results were obtained from 14 separate intratypic marker rescue experiments and the analysis of 20 HSV-1/HSV-2 intertypic recombinants. The order of these mutations on the physical map of HSV-2 is unambiguous and correlates almost exactly with the previously published genetic map of Timbury & Calder (1976). One of the mutants studied (HSV-2 ts12) has apparently two distinct conditionally lethal ts mutations, one in the long and the other in the short region of the HSV genome.

Abstract:Background: Inexperienced nursing care can compromise the quality of care and the well-being of patients. The aim of this study was to assess the main sources of stress encountered by nurses and novice nurses in a setting not previously experienced. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA format in Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL electronic databases in March 2024. A total of 395 studies were identified, of which 16 met the inclusion criteria. Selection was made on the basis of topic relevance and methodological quality, assessed using the critical tools of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Results: A total of 16 studies were included in this review. Of the 16 selected, 10 were cross-sectional studies, 3 were cohort studies, 2 were qualitative, and 1 was a systematic review. The studies revealed that the main stressors for novice nurses included time management, workload, and interpersonal relationships. The results underline that organizational factors, such as lack of support and high work demands, play a key role in generating stress. Conclusion: Identifying and addressing the key challenges faced by novice nurses, such as workload, adjustment to the environment, professional expectations, and interpersonal relationships, is crucial to sustain their professional engagement and ensure the quality of health care. This understanding is essential for creating efficient policies and practices that enhance the occupational well-being and stability of nurses in the workforce. Emergency nurses' experience of crisis: A qualitative study

Abstract:AIM: A crisis is an environment created in a rapidly changing and chaotic work setting which is found in a busy emergency department of a hospital with higher intensity. The objective of this study was to define and explore emergency room nurses' description of crisis in critical situations and to identify barriers and mitigating factors that affect how nurses handle crises.METHODS: This study is a qualitative research with a content analysis approach. Eighteen emergency nurses were purposefully selected to take part in this study. Data collection was through face-to-face semistructured interviews until data saturation was finalized. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis.RESULTS: The data analysis consisted of four main categories: (i) loss of balance; (ii) crisis control (anticipation-preparation, resource control, control skills, and supporting nurses); (iii) human factors related to staff (sufficient staff, competent staff, individual characteristics, ability to communicate); and (iv) teamwork (cooperation and reciprocal trust).CONCLUSION: Findings showed the meaning of the crisis and challenges and issues faced by emergency nurses throughout the crisis. Health services authorities can use these results to make comprehensive plans in order to reduce emergency crises.

Abstract:The experience and self-confidence of healthcare professionals play critical roles in reducing anxiety levels during emergencies. It is important to recognize the potential impact of anxiety on performance. To enhance preparedness and confidence in managing emergencies, healthcare professionals benefit from regular training and simulations. Additionally, repeated exposure to emergency scenarios can help modulate physiological responses. Managing anxiety effectively is key, as heightened sympathetic stimulation associated with anxiety can adversely affect performance. This study aimed to investigate nurses' self-assessed ability to manage emergency guidelines and their self-confidence in performing tasks in critical care settings. A questionnaire was provided to 1097 nurses. We compared the self-confidence of experienced nurses (ENs) and newly licensed nurses (NLNs) in managing emergency department shifts or critical patients, and found that ENs are more confident in these scenarios. This phenomenon was also observed in subjects who had taken simulation courses, although they were still a low percentage. Most NLNs feel sufficiently ready to work in medium-intensity wards. Attending advanced training courses enhances nurses' self-confidence and may improve patient safety management., improving patient recovery, and minimizing errors. Attending courses improves the perception of autonomy of nurses in different scenarios.

Experiences of nursing students as healthcare aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain: A phemonenological research study

Abstract:Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a worldwide health and social crisis directly impacting the healthcare system. Hospitals had to rearrange its structure to meet clinical needs. Spain has been experiencing a shortage of working nurses. Student nurses in their last year at university were employed to help the National Health System respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore and understand the experience of nursing students' roles as healthcare aid in responding to the COVID-19 crisis. Methods: A qualitative phenomenology design was used to explore undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of their experiences as HAs during the COVID-19 outbreak. Open face-to-face interviews were conducted to nursing students (n = 10) in May 2020. Data was analyzed using the hermeneutic interpretative approach. Results: All participants were women aged between 21 and 25 years. Seven main themes emerged: learning, ambivalent emotions and adaptation were classified at a personal level; teamwork, patient communication, and unclear care processes were categorized under hospital structure; and coping mechanisms were part of external factors. Conclusions: Orientation, follow-up, and emotional support in crisis situations are key to unexperienced healthcare workers overcoming stressful emotions. Previous academic education and training may help novice future nurses feel more confident about their tasks and responsibilities as well as improve patient outcomes, resource management, and staff safety.

Abstract:Background: The period of standardized training is a transitional stage when Generation Z newly graduated registered nurses (Gen Z NGRNs) change their role from student to nurse. Affected by the COVID-19, they lack clinical practice and practicum experience in emergency departments in their university studies. At the beginning of career, they are under great pressure. Resilience is one of the factors that reduce their stress level and increases endurance. It is of interest to understand how this representative group of nurses gained and played the experience of resilience early in their careers. Objective: To explore Gen Z NGRNs' experience and process of resilience, to provide a new perspective and theoretical basis for psychological rehabilitation or intervention of medical staff who experienced transition shock. Methods: This study employed a qualitative design based on the phenomenological approach. 18 nurses from a third-level class-A hospital in Shanghai who participated in standardized training in emergency department were enrolled using purposive sampling. Data collection was through in-depth and semi-structured interviews and continued until reaching data saturation. Results: The investigation uncovered three themes and ten subthemes. Pressure and challenge contained high workload and high risk coexist, death's stress response, more emergencies and high professional requirements. Coping and adaptation contained team help, psychological restructuring, peer support, transformational leadership. Reflection and planning contained enhance learning, appreciate life. Conclusions: Our study described the embodiment and coping experience of the physical and mental stress faced by Gen Z NGRNs during their standardized training in the emergency department. It is emphasized that nurse educators should pay attention to the character and actual needs of Gen Z NGRNs, explore and formulate strategies, so as to guide NGRNs to quickly adapt and grow in the new role. The ultimate goal is to increase nurse retention and improve the quality of nursing.

Abstract:Background: The reform of the Spanish higher education studies from the Bologna Declaration did not entail the necessary changes in the teaching methodologies used. The clinical preceptor emerged as the main guiding professional in the practical training of nursing students. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand fourth-year nursing students’ and newly qualified nurses’ (NQNs) perception on their lecturers’ and clinical preceptors’ effectiveness. Methods: Exploratory, descriptive qualitative study was carried out at a Spanish University. By convenience sampling and according to defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, twelve newly qualified nurses and twelve fourth-year students of the Degree in Nursing were included in order to contrast the results. A thematic analysis of data was carried out, to later be coded by two researchers. Results: Two main themes were identified: the good lecturer and the good clinical preceptor, with several subthemes in each. These included the characteristics that both should have, both in teaching, nursing and interpersonal-relation skills. Conclusions: The need of preceptorship training programs has been highlighted in our context. Educators all over the world should be properly qualified in order to train and educate competent nurses for the future.

The Empathetic Involvement of Nurses in the Context of Neuroscience: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Empathy and emotional regulation (susceptibility and resistance) play an important role in a nurse's well-being and the provision of high-quality care. This phenomenon has not yet been studied in the context of nurses working in neuroscience. This study aimed to explore the perceptions related to empathy among nurses working in neuroscience contexts. Methods: Employing a mixed-methods approach, we conducted an online quantitative survey with 211 nurses working in various neuroscience settings using the Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale (BEES) and 15 online semistructured qualitative interviews to delve deeper into empathetic experiences. The mean and measures of dispersion, such as standard deviation, were used to analyze the quantitative data. Thematic analysis investigated qualitative data, and data triangulation was performed. Results: The quantitative findings revealed no significant differences in empathy or emotional regulation across the different neuroscience settings but highlighted an increase in susceptibility related to young age (under 29) and years of service (first 5 years). The interviews brought to light the challenges nurses face in highly emotional situations and the strategies they employ to manage empathy and maintain professional detachment, such as self-care strategies, awareness development, and team support. One hindering factor is managers. Conclusions: The findings of this study underscore the essential role of empathetic capability in nursing care in neuroscience. The experience of younger nurses and the first 5 years of employment are elements to be considered by managers for burnout risk. Nurses demonstrate susceptibility and resistance and maintain a balance in dealing with high-emotional-stress situations. The implications of these findings are significant and should guide future research and practice in the field of neuroscience nursing.

Abstract:Introduction. The COVID‐19 pandemic has had a significant impact on healthcare professionals globally, with nurses facing diverse challenges at the forefront. Despite their resilience, nurses are experiencing emotional burdens, which have contributed to a growing intention to abandon the profession. Understanding these factors is crucial for addressing the global nursing shortage. Methods. A qualitative descriptive approach was utilized for this study. Nurses who were actively working during the last waves of the pandemic in Catalonia, Spain, were intentionally recruited through social media and personal contacts, and data were collected through online semistructured interviews until data saturation was reached. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method. Results. Fourteen nurses, with an average of 22.8 years of work experience, were interviewed. Thematic analysis revealed three main themes: (1) the impact of COVID‐19 on health, (2) factors influencing the decision to stay, and (3) recommendations to improve crisis management. Conclusion. Nurses faced significant emotional impacts but demonstrated dedication and resilience. Their decision to persevere was influenced by factors such as responsibility, guilt, and economic stability. Urgent measures are necessary to provide tailored mental health support and recognize emotional challenges in crisis preparedness.

Abstract:This paper presents a low-power filter bank design for digital hearing aids, which is compliant with the ANSI S1.11 standard. A multi-rate filtering algorithm and its coefficient design method are proposed, which reduce 94% multiplications. The power dissipation is further reduced by 31% and 35% with switch activity reduction and multi-VDD silicon implementation respectively. The design has been implemented using the TSMC 0.13 mum CMOS technology and consumes only 79 muW for 24 KHz 18-band audio processing.
The emotion: A crucial component in the care of critically ill patients

Abstract:Background: The acquisition of experience is a major concern for nurses in intensive care units. Although the emotional component of the clinical practice of these nurses has been widely studied, greater examination is required to determine how this component influences their learning and practical experience. Objective: To discover the relationships between emotion, memory and learning and the impacts on nursing clinical practice. Research design: This is a qualitative phenomenological study. The data were collected from open, in-depth interviews. A total of 22 intensive care unit nurses participated in this research between January 2012 and December 2014. Ethical considerations: The School of Nursing Ethics Committee approved the study, which complied with ethical principles and required informed consent. Findings: We found a clear relationship between emotion, memory and the acquisition of experience. This relationship grouped three dimensions: (1) satisfaction, to relieve the patient's pain or discomfort, give confidence and a sense of security to the patient, enable the presence of family members into the intensive care unit and provide family members with a realistic view of the patient's situation; (2) error experience, which nurses feel when a patient dies, when they fail to accompany a patient in his or her decision to abandon the struggle to live or when they fail to lend support to the patient's family; and (3) the feel bad-feel good paradox, which occurs when a mistake in the patient's care or handling of his or her family is repaired. Conclusion: Emotion is a capacity that impacts on nurses' experience and influences improvements in clinical practice. Recalling stories of satisfaction helps to reinforce good practice, while recalling stories of errors helps to identify difficulties in the profession and recognise new forms of action. The articulation of emotional competencies may support the development of nursing ethics in the intensive care unit to protect and defend their patients and improve their relationships with families in order to maximise the potential for patient care.
Psychosocial and emotional management of work experience in palliative care nurses: A qualitative exploration

Abstract:Background: Palliative care, a crucial aspect of healthcare, faces challenges in psychosocial and emotional management among nurses. With an increasing need for palliative services globally, addressing the emotional well-being of nurses becomes pivotal. Aim: To explore nurses' psychosocial and emotional work experiences in a palliative care department. The focus is on understanding the challenges, identifying coping strategies, and assessing the impact on professional and private life when facing those experiences. Methods: A phenomenologic-hermeneutical study involving semi-structured interviews was conducted to comprehend the lived experiences of ten nurses working in a hospital's palliative care department in Spain. Hermeneutic analysis was employed to extract patterns and insights from their experiences. The COREQ checklist was used to report this study. Findings: Palliative care nurses perceived insufficient preparation in emotional management, grappling with complex family interactions and unique work dynamics. They highlighted the significance of self-protection strategies, experience, clinical sessions, and external resources. Limited training in emotional resilience and challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic emerged as organisational barriers. Nurses expressed a desire for enhanced training and resources. Conclusion: The study uncovered a deficiency in the emotional preparedness of palliative care nurses, impacting their professional and personal lives. Despite positive aspects, the emotional toll necessitates attention and intervention. Implications for nursing policy: Comprehensive emotional training for palliative care nurses, addressing barriers, providing resources, and acknowledging emotional labour is necessary. Reinstating paused training sessions and considering specific challenges like those posed by the pandemic are vital. Supporting nurses in their professional and private lives is crucial for sustaining quality care in palliative care departments.

Abstract:ABSTRACT An in vitro assay was developed to investigate endonuclease activity of Thogoto virus, a tick-borne orthomyxovirus. Endonuclease activity relied on an interaction between the 3′ and 5′ termini of virion RNA (vRNA) and not those of cRNA. Evidence was obtained that cap structures are cleaved directly from cap donors and that cleavage does not occur after pyrimidines. A 5′ hook structure, present in the vRNA promoter but not the cRNA promoter, was introduced into cRNA promoter mutants. These mutants stimulated endonuclease activity, although at levels slightly lower than that of vRNA. The ability of the cRNA promoter to stimulate endonuclease activity when mutated to contain a 5′ hook structure indicates that this structure constitutes a switching mechanism for endonuclease activity between the vRNA and cRNA promoters.
[Interaction between tiapride and alcohol in man].

Abstract:Results of a study in nine alcoholic patients designed to investigate the effects on wakefulness of tiapride combined with alcohol are presented. Each patient was given successively alcohol, tiapride, and both. Changes in certain psychomotor performances during each of these three periods are described. In the study patients, the tiapride-alcohol combination produced no detrimental effect on wakefulness; on the contrary, results of one of the tests were improved.

Abstract:Undergraduate nursing education is pivotal, yet it presents numerous challenges, particularly during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was conducted to develop a collaborative program between hospitals and educational institutions to enhance the professional preparation of nursing students. This investigation employed qualitative methods and semi-structured interviews with 12 nursing students from a Guangxi hospital. Analysis via Colaizzi's method revealed four primary themes: knowledge and skill requisites, stressors within the clinical environment, emotional responses, and self-adaptation processes. The findings underscore the necessity for heightened attention to the experiences and stressors of nursing students. Drawing on Roy’s Adaptation Model and Neuman’s Systems Model, the research proposes an integrated approach to nursing education that encompasses curriculum development, practical training, mentorship, and administrative support. Enhancements in these areas are posited to strengthen students’ knowledge, resilience, and professional identity, thereby fostering the advancement of nursing practice and education. Abstract:The perinatal outcome of 26 patients with confined placental mosaicism (CPM) detected in chorionic villus sampling (CVS) who wished to continue their pregnancies was compared with that of two controls per patient matched for age and parity (n=52). There were no significant differences in birth weight or gestational age at delivery between patients with CPM and controls. There were no cases of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) in the CPM patients as compared with two (2/52, 3·8 per cent) in the control group (P>0·05). There was no significant increase in fetal loss between the study group (1/26, 3·6 per cent) and the controls (1/52, 1·9 per cent) (P>0·05).

Abstract:Background: The medical burden of psychiatric disorders continues to increase and has caused a major impact on health, society, human rights, and economy in the world. Patients with mental illness have a higher ratio of emergency department visits than non-psychiatric patients. Psychiatric disorder-related emergency department care is a stress-causing factor in emergency department work. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experience of emergency department nurses in caring for patients with mental illness. Methods: A descriptive qualitative research design with purposive sampling was adopted. A total of 17 nurses working in the emergency department in central Taiwan were recruited. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted and thematic content analysis was performed. Results: Four themes and six sub-themes emerged that described the experiences of emergency nurse caring for patients with mental illness: (1) Mindset; (2) The predicament of psychiatric care: Violence and isolation and helplessness, and lack of therapeutic communication skills; (3) The influence of open space: insufficient safety and privacy; and (4) The educational needs of psychiatric nursing: improving cognition in psychiatric patients and changing negative thinking into positive thinking. Conclusions: The results revealed the experience of emergency nurses in caring for patients with mental illness. Emergency psychiatric nursing training related to foundational psychiatric knowledge, communication skill, concept of recovery, coping with violence restraining are needed for nurses who work in emergency departments.

Abstract:Objective To describe and analyse emergency nurses' experiences of caring for unidentified patients, and to provide a basis for constructing processes and standards of care for unidentified patients in the emergency department. Methods This study is a descriptive phenomenological research that utilized purposive sampling. Sixteen emergency department nurses, who cared for unidentified patients between June and September 2023, were selected for semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's 7-step method to identify and refine themes. Results Three themes were distilled: (1) increased workload, (2) increased mental stress at work, and (3) material needs and external environmental support. Conclusion Emergency nurses have more complex negative emotional experiences when dealing with unidentified patients and want more external support to cope with such patients. Hospital administrators should pay full attention to nurses' caregiving experiences and provide positive interventions.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the educational needs of virtual reality simulations that can be applied to novice nurses during the waiting period before starting work in a hospital.Methods: A convergent mixed methods was used. The survey data were collected from 230 novice nurses, and a focus group interview was conducted with 6 new nurses. The data were collected from November 2022 to January 2023. Descriptive statistics, a frequency analysis, independent t-test, and an Importance-Performance Analysis were performed using SPSS 24.0.Results: Appropriate topics for virtual reality simulation education were indicated to be medications and intravenous injections, which are high priority topics in quantitative and qualitative research. The novice nurses wanted group activity training three to four times a week for two weeks before beginning work in a hospital. They also wanted an immersive virtual reality system based on a real hospital environment.Conclusion: Based on the above results, this study provides basic data for the development of a virtual reality simulation education that can improve the adaptation of novice nurses to clinical practice. A strategy was suggested to utilize the waiting time before beginning work in a hospital as educational time.
