Abstract:The family Loliginidae is a diverse and economically valuable group of cephalopods. To investigate the evolution of their mitochondrial genomes, we characterized and compared these genomes among nine species, six newly sequenced. In all nine species, mitochondrial genomes followed the typical invertebrate canonical organization with 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. However, different from the vertebrates, there were three non-coding control regions for most of the loliginid species. As for the gene arrangement and organization, the mitochondrial genome of Sepioteuthis lessoniana is totally different from the other eight species—there is only one control region, but 25 tRNAs. We analyzed the level of selective pressures imposed on different protein-coding genes, and found that stabilizing selection is strongest on cytb. We then tested the phylogenetic utility of this new mitochondrial genome data using 13 protein-coding genes and the results showed that Loliginidae is divided into two major lineages, with S. lessoniana sister to a clade comprising the remaining species. Loliolus beka , Loliolus japonica , Loliolus uyii , Uroteuthis chinensis , Uroteuthis edulis , Uroteuthis duvauceli , Heterololigo bleekeri , and Doryteuthis opalescens were recovered as a monophyletic group.
Mitogenomics reveals phylogenetic relationships of Patellogastropoda (Mollusca, Gastropoda) and dynamic gene rearrangements

Abstract:Patellogastropoda has been recognized as the most ‘primitive’ group of living Gastropoda and plays important role in littoral marine ecosystems. Both morphological and molecular works have attempted to resolve the phylogenetic framework of Patellogastropoda, but evolutionary relationships among major lineages remain controversial. In addition, a few mitogenomes sequenced of Patellogastropoda exhibit extensive rearrangements; however, it was unclear that which one can represent the ancestral gene arrangement. In this regard, we sequenced 10 new mitochondrial genomes and analysed them with previously published nine mitogenomes and six transcriptomic data which represent six families of Patellogastropoda. A well‐supported phylogeny was reconstructed based on the amino acid sequences of 13 protein‐coding genes, recovered Lottioidea as non‐monophyletic with two well‐supported lineages. Comprehensive taxon sampling in Lottiidae allows us to recover Lottia digitalis sister to Lottia cassis. Comparing gene order among families, genera and species showed that Nacellidae has a conserved gene arrangement which is similar to that of hypothetical ancestral Gastropoda, whereas Lottiidae exhibits extensive rearrangements even without considering the changes of tRNA genes. A chronogram dating mayor cladogenetic events within the group was also reconstructed. Our results provide new insights into the phylogenetic relationships of Patellogastropoda and detect dramatic gene rearrangements within the group.

Abstract:Patellogastropoda, the true limpets, is a major group of gastropods widely distributed in marine habitats from the intertidal to deep sea. Though important for understanding their evolutionary radiation, the phylogenetic relationships among the patellogastropod families have always been challenging to reconstruct, with contradictory results likely due to insufficient sampling. Here, we obtained mitogenomic and phylogenomic data (transcriptomic or genomic) from six species representing the three predominantly deep-water patellogastropod families: Lepetidae, Neolepetopsidae, and Pectinodontidae. By using various phylogenetic methods, we show that mitogenome phylogeny recovers monophyly of eight families in most of the trees, though the relationships among families remain contentious. Meanwhile, a more robust family-level topology consistent with morphology was achieved by phylogenomics. This also reveals that these mainly deep-water families are monophyletic, suggesting a single colonisation of the deep water around the Jurassic. We also found a lack of significant correlation between genome size and habitat depth, despite some deep-water species exhibiting larger genome sizes. Our phylogenomic tree provides a stable phylogenetic backbone for Patellogastropoda that includes seven of the nine recognized families and paves the way for future evolutionary analyses in this major group of molluscs.

Abstract:Lottiidae (Gray, 1840) is a derived family of Patellogastropoda and an important component of intertidal benthic communities. The mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) has been frequently used to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of Patellogastropoda. We used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to sequence the complete mitogenomes of five species. We analyzed the basic base composition characteristics of these mitogenomes, constructed a phylogenetic tree, compared the characteristics of gene rearrangement with other related species, and discussed the evolutionary patterns between gastropod species and the evolutionary relationships of each subclass. In addition, we aim to infer the differentiation time and evolutionary characteristics of various species in the order Patellogastropoda. These results will enrich the mitogenome database of Patellogastropoda and enhance our understanding of the genetic characteristics of Lottiidae and the phylogenetic relationships between gastropods.

Abstract:The molluscan order Neogastropoda encompasses over 15,000 almost exclusively marine species playing important roles in benthic communities and in the economies of coastal countries. Neogastropoda underwent intensive cladogenesis in early stages of diversification, generating a 'bush' at the base of their evolutionary tree, that has been hard to resolve even with high throughput molecular data. In the present study to resolve the bush, we use a variety of phylogenetic inference methods and a comprehensive exon capture dataset of 1,817 loci (79.6% data occupancy) comprising 112 taxa of 48 out of 60 Neogastropoda families. Our results show consistent topologies and high support in all analyses at (super)family level, supporting monophyly of Muricoidea, Mitroidea, Conoidea, and, with some reservations, Olivoidea and Buccinoidea. Volutoidea and Turbinelloidea as currently circumscribed are clearly paraphyletic. Despite our analyses consistently resolving most backbone nodes, three prove problematic: First, uncertain placement of Cancellariidae, as the sister group to either a Ficoidea-Tonnoidea clade, or to the rest of Neogastropoda, leaves monophyly of Neogastropoda unresolved. Second, relationships are contradictory at the base of the major 'core Neogastropoda' grouping. Third, coalescence-based analyses reject monophyly of the Buccinoidea in relation to Vasidae. We analysed phylogenetic signal of targeted loci in relation to potential biases, and we propose most probable resolutions in the latter two recalcitrant nodes. The uncertain placement of Cancellariidae may be explained by orthology violations due to differential paralog loss shortly after the whole genome duplication, which should be resolved with a curated set of longer loci.

Abstract:Neomphalida is an order of gastropod molluscs with highly diverse morphology and a global distribution across various chemosynthesis-based ecosystems from organic falls to hot vents. The phylogenetic relationships of taxa within this order remain contentious, due to the rarity of material leading to a low taxonomic coverage and few genetic markers used. Neomphalida includes three families—Melanodrymiidae, Neomphalidae, and Peltospiridae—and molecular sequences are especially lacking in Melanodrymiidae. Here, we assembled a total of 11 mitogenomes covering these three families and 14 genus-level groups to reconstruct the most complete phylogeny of Neomphalida to date. Our current result recovered the monophyly of three families with maximum support and a likely interfamilial relationship of (Melanodrymiidae + Neomphalidae) + Peltospiridae. These indicate the possibility of habitat shifting from non-chemosynthetic deep sea to hot vent and then to sunken wood, accompanied by elevated mitogenome rearrangements and amino acid substitution rates in Melanodrymiidae. By mapping species distribution on the phylogeny, our findings suggest a Pacific origin of Neomphalida and multiple historical dispersal events of Peltospiridae to the Indian Ocean and at least once to the Atlantic.

Abstract:Comprising about 60 % of gastropod diversity, caenogastropods display almost all kinds of shell forms and include many commercially important marine groups. Although the monophyly of Caenogastropoda has been widely accepted, thier internal phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. In the present study, a total of 27 caenogastropods belonging to eight superfamilies were sequenced and used for phylogenetic reconstruction. All newly sequenced mitogenomes adhered to the consensus gene order of caenogastropods, except for those of Vanikoroidea, Vermetoidea and Cerithioidea, which involved protein-coding genes. The reconstructed mitogenomic phylogeny suggested the monophylies of Architaenioglossa, Sorbeoconcha, Hypsogastropoda and the siphonate clade. The present study also identified a close affinity among Cypraeoidea, Ficoidea, Tonnoidea, and Neogastropoda, supported by the presence of a pleurembolic proboscis. The monophyly of Neogastropoda was not supported, as Cancellariidae was found to be sister to the limpet-shaped group Calyptraeoidea, and (Tonooidea + Ficoidea) were sister to the remaining neogastropods. This study provides important information for better understanding the evolution of caenogastropods, as well as for the protection and utilization of these diverse and economically significant marine resources.
Mitogenomic phylogeny of Trochoidea (Gastropoda: Vetigastropoda): New insights from increased complete genomes

Abstract:Increased mitochondrial (mt) genomes can provide more sets of genome‐level characteristics for resolving deeper phylogeny. Limited information with respect to the Trochoidea mitochondrial genome organization is available; besides, monophyly and internal relationships of the superfamily still remain a matter of discussion. To resolve the monophyly and internal phylogenetic controversies of Trochoidea and expand our understanding for mt genomic characteristic evolution among Trochoidea, the phylogenetic trees were reconstructed using 13 newly sequenced complete mt genomes and 35 genomes from GenBank, and both the maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses were highly supported. Vetigastropoda phylogenetic analyses recovered the monophyly of Trochoidea. Trochoidea phylogenetic analyses and genetic distances supported the non‐monophyly of Tegulidae and Tegula, indicating that the taxonomic status of several genera (Rochia, Tectus and Cittarium) should be revised and Tegula, Omphalius and Chlorostoma should be placed as a same genus. The close affinity between Tectus virgatus and Rochia was also revealed. Three‐nucleotide insertion in nad1, nine‐nucleotide insertion and six‐nucleotide deletion in nad5 are detected in Tegulidae, Tectus and Rochia, respectively. Gene orders within Trochoidea are stable, with gene rearrangements exclusive to tRNA genes observed. Homoplasious convergences because of trnT rearrangement display translocation in Turbinidae and reversion in Trochidae and Calliostomatida. For trnE and trnG, we identify 11 arrangement types, suggesting that the gene rearrangement history needs to be further evaluated. Our study emphasizes the importance of mt genomes in resolving phylogenetic relationships within Trochoidea. In addition, the mt genomic characters would contribute new insights into the classification of Trochoidea.

Abstract:Within Polynoidae, a diverse aphroditiform family, the subfamily Macellicephalinae comprises anchialine cave-dwelling and deep-sea scaleworms. In this study, Lepidonotopodinae is synonymized with Macellicephalinae, and the tribe Lepidonotopodini is applied to a well-supported clade inhabiting deep-sea chemosynthetic-based ecosystems. Newly sequenced "genome skimming" data for 30 deep-sea polynoids and the comparatively shallow living Eulagisca gigantea is used to bioinformatically assemble their mitogenomes. When analyzed with existing scaleworm mitogenomes, deep-sea scaleworms exhibit increased gene order rearrangement events compared to shallow-water relatives. Additionally, comparative analyses of shallow-water vs. deep-sea polynoid substitution rates in mitochondrial protein-coding genes show an overall relaxed purifying selection and a positive selection of several amino acid sites in deep-sea species, indicating that polynoid mitogenomes have undergone selective pressure to evolve metabolic adaptations suited to deep-sea environments. Furthermore, the inclusion of skimming data for already known Lepidonotopodini species allowed for an increased coverage of DNA data and a representation of the taxa necessary to create a more robust phylogeny using 18 genes, as opposed to the six genes previously used. The phylogenetic results support the erection of Cladopolynoe gen. nov., Mamiwata gen. nov., Photinopolynoe gen. nov., Stratigos gen. nov., and Themis gen. nov., and emended diagnoses for Branchinotogluma, Branchipolynoe, Lepidonotopodium, and Levensteiniella.

Abstract:Caenogastropoda is a highly diverse group, containing ∼60% of all existing gastropods. Species in this subclass predominantly inhabit marine environments and have a high ecological and economic value. Owing to the increase in relevant phylogenetic studies, our understanding of between species relatedness in Caenogastropoda has improved. However, the biodiversity, taxonomic status, and phylogenetic relationships of this group remain unclear. In the present study, we performed next-generation sequencing of four complete mitochondrial genomes from three families (Buccinidae, Columbellidae, and Cypraeidae) and the four mitogenomes were classical circular structures, with a length of 16 177 bp in Volutharpa ampullacea , 16 244 bp in Mitrella albuginosa , 16 926 bp in Mauritia arabica asiatica and 15 422 bp in Erronea errones . Base composition analysis indicated that whole sequences were biased toward A and T. Then compared them with 171 complete mitochondrial genomes of Caenogastropoda. The phylogenetic relationship of Caenogastropoda derived from Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (BI) trees constructed based on CDS sequences was consistent with the results of traditional morphological analysis, with all three families showing close relationships. This study supported Caenogastropoda at the molecular level as a separate clade of Mollusca. According to our divergence time estimations, Caenogastropoda was formed during the middle Triassic period (∼247.2–237 Ma). Our novel mitochondrial genomes provide evidence for the speciation of Caenogastropoda in addition to elucidating the mitochondrial genomic evolution of this subclass.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrothermal vents and hydrocarbon seeps in the deep ocean are rare oases fueled by chemosynthesis. Biological communities inhabiting these ecosystems are often distributed in widely separated habitats, raising intriguing questions on how these organisms achieve connectivity and whether habitat types facilitate intraspecific divergence. The deep-sea patellogastropod limpet Bathyacmaea nipponica that colonizes both vents and seeps across ∼2,400 km in the Northwest Pacific is a feasible model to answer these questions. We analyzed 123 individuals from four vents and three seeps using a comprehensive method incorporating population genomics and physical ocean modeling. Genome survey sequencing and genotyping-by-sequencing resulted in 9,838 single-nucleotide polymorphisms for population genomic analyses. Genetic divergence and demographic analyses revealed four habitat-linked (i.e., three seep and one vent) genetic groups, with the vent genetic group established via the opportunistic invasion of a few limpet larvae from a nearby seep genetic group. TreeMix analysis uncovered three historical seep-to-vent migration events. ADMIXTURE and divMigrate analyses elucidated weak contemporary gene flow from a seep genetic group to the vent genetic group. Physical ocean modeling underlined the potential roles of seafloor topography and ocean currents in shaping the genetic connectivity, contemporary migration, and local hybridization of these deep-sea limpets. Our study highlighted the power of integrating genomic and oceanographic approaches in deciphering the demography and diversification of deep-sea organisms. Given the increasing anthropogenic activities (e.g., mining and gas hydrate extraction) affecting the deep ocean, our results have implications for the conservation of deep-sea biodiversity and establishment of marine protected areas.

Abstract:Accurate phylogenetic reconstructions are crucial for comprehending the evolutionary histories, reproductive traits, and ecological habits of organisms. The subfamily Gonideinae of freshwater mussels is currently thought to include eight tribes. However, due to inadequate taxon sampling and molecular data, the assignment of the freshwater mussel genus Inversidens at the tribe level has been unstable. Additionally, the lack of phylogenetic data has hindered efforts to understand the basic biology and implementation of conservation efforts of Inversidens rentianensis, an endemic species to China. Here, we first present the complete mitochondrial genome of Inversidens rentianensis and offer a detailed description of its anatomical morphology. Based on DNA sequence data from five genes (COI, ND1, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA) and complete mitochondrial genomes, we investigated the phylogenetic position of Inversidens using various analytical methods. Both the concatenated five-gene and mitogenome datasets strongly supported that Inversidens classified to the tribe Gonideini in Gonideinae and formed a basal clade within the tribe Gonideini. Molecular dating analysis suggested that Inversidens originated during the mid-Cretaceous era (102.73 Mya, 95% highest posterior density HPD = 72.22 ‐ 137.03 Mya) and underwent diversification in the Late Paleogene era (37.92 Mya, 95% HPD = 20.39 ‐ 60.59 Mya). Moreover, based on the Quantitative Assessment of Species for Conservation (QASCP), Inversidens rentianensis is ranked as second priority, providing valuable insights for its management and conservation efforts. Taken together, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the systematic position and evolutionary history of Inversidens within the currently accepted subfamily Gonideinae classification framework. These findings establish a solid foundation for future investigations on the ecology, reproductive behavior patterns, and conservation biology of this taxonomic group.

Abstract:Despite significant advances in phylogenetics over the past decades, the deep relationships within Bivalvia (phylum Mollusca) remain inconclusive. Previous efforts based on morphology or several genes have failed to resolve many key nodes in the phylogeny of Bivalvia. Advances have been made recently using transcriptome data, but the phylogenetic relationships within Bivalvia historically lacked consensus, especially within Pteriomorphia and Imparidentia. Here, we inferred the relationships of key lineages within Bivalvia using matrices generated from specifically designed ultraconserved elements (UCEs) with 16 available genomic resources and 85 newly sequenced specimens from 55 families. Our new probes (Bivalve UCE 2k v.1) for target sequencing captured an average of 849 UCEs with 1085-bp in mean length from in vitro experiments. Our results introduced novel schemes from six major clades (Protobranchina, Pteriomorphia, Palaeoheterodonta, Archiheterodonta, Anomalodesmata and Imparidentia), though some inner nodes were poorly resolved, such as paraphyletic Heterodonta in some topologies potentially due to insufficient taxon sampling. The resolution increased when analyzing specific matrices for Pteriomorphia and Imparidentia. We recovered three Pteriomorphia topologies different from previously published trees, with the strongest support for ((Ostreida + (Arcida + Mytilida)) + (Pectinida + (Limida + Pectinida))). Limida were nested within Pectinida, warranting further studies. For Imparidentia, our results strongly supported the new hypothesis of (Galeommatida + (Adapedonta + Cardiida)), while the possible non-monophyly of Lucinida was inferred but poorly supported. Overall, our results provide important insights into the phylogeny of Bivalvia and show that target enrichment sequencing of UCEs can be broadly applied to study both deep and shallow phylogenetic relationships.

Abstract:The superfamily Stromboidea is a clade of morphologically distinctive gastropods which include the iconic Strombidae, or 'true conchs'. In this study, we present the most taxonomically extensive phylogeny of the superfamily to date, using fossil calibrations to produce a chronogram and extant geographical distributions to reconstruct ancestral ranges. From these results, we confirm the monophyly of all stromboidean families; however, six genera are not monophyletic using current generic assignments (Strombidae: Lentigo, Canarium, Dolomena, Doxander; Xenophoridae: Onustus, Xenophora). Within Strombidae, analyses resolve an Indo-West Pacific (IWP) clade sister to an East Pacific/Atlantic clade, together sister to a second, larger IWP clade. Our results also indicate two pulses of strombid diversification within the Miocene, and a Tethyan/IWP origin for Strombidae - both supported by the fossil record. However, conflicts between divergence time estimates and the fossil record warrant further exploration. Species delimitation analyses using the COI barcoding gene support several taxonomic changes. We synonymise Euprotomus aurora with Euprotomus bulla, Strombus alatus with Strombus pugilis, Dolomena abbotti with Dolomena labiosa, and Dolomena operosa with Dolomena vittata. We identified cryptic species complexes within Terebellum terebellum, Lambis lambis, 'Canarium' wilsonorum, Dolomena turturella and Maculastrombus mutabilis. We reinstate Rimellopsis laurenti as a species (previously synonymised with R. laurenti) and recognise Harpago chiragra rugosus and Lambis truncata sowerbyi valid at the rank of species. Finally, we establish several new combinations, rendering Lentigo, Dolomena, and Canarium monophyletic: Lentigo thersites, Dolomena robusta, Dolomena epidromis, Dolomena turturella, Dolomena taeniata, Dolomena vanikorensis, D. vittata, 'Canarium' wilsonorum, Hawaiistrombus scalariformis, Maculastrombus mutabilis, Maculastrombus microurceus.

Abstract:Mollusca, the second‐most diverse animal phylum, is estimated to have over 100,000 living species with great genetic and phenotypic diversity, a rich fossil record, and a considerable evolutionary significance. Early work on molluscan systematics was grounded in morphological and anatomical studies. With the transition from oligo gene Sanger sequencing to cutting‐edge genomic sequencing technologies, molecular data has been increasingly utilised, providing abundant information for reconstructing the molluscan phylogenetic tree. However, relationships among and within most major lineages of Mollusca have long been contentious, often due to limited genetic markers, insufficient taxon sampling and phylogenetic conflict. Fortunately, remarkable progress in molluscan systematics has been made in recent years, which has shed light on how major molluscan groups have evolved. In this review of molluscan systematics, we first synthesise the current understanding of the molluscan Tree of Life at higher taxonomic levels. We then discuss how micromolluscs, which have adult individuals with a body size smaller than 5 mm, offer unique insights into Mollusca's vast diversity and deep phylogeny. Despite recent advancements, our knowledge of molluscan systematics and phylogeny still needs refinement. Further advancements in molluscan systematics will arise from integrating comprehensive data sets, including genome‐scale data, exceptional fossils, and digital morphological data (including internal structures). Enhanced access to these data sets, combined with increased collaboration among morphologists, palaeontologists, evolutionary developmental biologists, and molecular phylogeneticists, will significantly advance this field.

Abstract:Using DNA barcoding, six‐molecule markers and morphometry, we supported that L. quadrangulosa and L. contritus were synonyms of L. caveata, and confirmed multiple phenotypes in L. caveata for species identification. Accurate species identification is crucial for developing conservation strategies for freshwater mussels, one of the most imperiled faunas in the world. Traditionally, mussel species description primarily relied on conchological characters. However, shell morphology has great variability, which leads to the complexity of species delimitation. As endemic species to China, Lamprotula caveata was originally described by Heude (1877). Lamprotula quadrangulosus and Lamprotula contritus were considered for synonymization of L. caveata based on shell variants in the early 20th century, which has been long debated due to lack of rigorous molecular analysis. Moreover, great morphological variation caused doubt whether there are cryptic species. In this study, we used a combined phylogenetic and morphometric approach to verify the validity of the synonymization of L. caveata. The results of molecular species delimitation showed that two molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) were identified in Lamprotula spp., including the L. leaii lineage and the complex lineage (L. quadrangulosa, L. cornuumlunae, L. contritus, and L. caveata). Phylogenetic analyses revealed that L. cornuumlunae formed a basal monophyletic clade, whose divergence time was relatively recent (4.26 Ma [95% HPD = 1.91–7.22 Ma]), and L. contritus, L. caveata, and L. quadrangulosa formed a large polytomy group with very shallow branches. In the previous study, we have demonstrated the validity of L. cornuumlunae. The molecular evidences supported that the complex (L. quadrangulosa + L. contritus + L. caveata) was a valid species; L. quadrangulosa and L. contritus were synonyms of L. caveata. In addition, three morphospecies (L. quadrangulosa, L. contritus, and L. caveata) were aggregated without clear differentiation based on shell morphometric analysis. We confirmed multiple phenotypes in L. caveata for species identification and presumed that the phenotypic plasticity was a response to specific habitats. This study clarified the diversity and phylogeny of the Lamprotula group, which is a crucial step for developing new conservation and management strategies for this imperiled group.

Abstract:For the purpose of determining the placement of Calyptraeidae within the Littorinimorpha, we hereby furnish a thorough analysis of the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence of Desmaulus extinctorium . This mitogenome spans 16,605 base pairs and encompasses the entire set of 37 genes, including 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs and two rRNAs, with an evident AT bias. Notably, tRNA Ser1 and tRNA Ser2 lack dihydrouracil (DHU) arms, resulting in an inability to form a secondary structure. Similarly, tRNA Ala lacks a TΨC arm, rendering it incapable of forming a secondary structure. In contrast, the remaining tRNAs demonstrate a characteristic secondary structure reminiscent of a cloverleaf. A comparison with ancestral gastropods reveals distinct differences in three gene clusters (or genes), encompassing 15 tRNAs and eight PCGs. Notably, inversions and translocations represent the major types of rearrangements observed in D . extinctorium . Phylogenetic analysis demonstrates robust support for a monophyletic grouping of all Littorinimorpha species, with D . extinctorium representing a distinct Calyptraeoidea clade. In summary, this investigation provides the first complete mitochondrial dataset for a species of the Calyptraeidae, thus providing novel insights into the phylogenetic relationships within the Littorinimorpha.

Abstract:Being the phylum with the second largest biodiversity, mollusks are widely distributed in marine, freshwater, and land, conquered almost all habitats on the earth. Throughout geological time, several molluscan lineages independently colonized freshwater and land, evolving independently in new habitats. Resolving the timing of their colonization for novel environments is the basis of understanding the complex evolution of Mollusca. Herein, we obtained an elaborate single–copy orthologs set including 107 genes with a total length of 3,447,675 amino acid sites across 134 mollusks to reconstruct the phylogeny of Mollusca. The phylogenetic analysis recovered the "Aculifera+ Conchifera" topology with well–supported. By the divergence times estimation with fossil calibration, we revealed Cambrian rapid diversification of all molluscan classes. What's more, our results provided the times of three major independent colonization of novel environments and consistent with previous studies. The freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionida) colonized freshwater about 233 Mya, ancient origin and late diversification make this order to become the main represent of the freshwater bivalves. The orders Stylommatophora and Basommatophora (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) respectively colonized land and freshwater about 201 Mya, the Triassic–Jurassic mass extinction may have provided the opportunities for their colonization. Ampullariidae (Gastropoda) colonized freshwater about 156 Mya, their lungs may have contributed to the adaption of tropical freshwater environment and make them survive. Our results probably offer the most comprehensive time–scale of molluscan evolution, could provide some insights into the habitat transition and evolution of Mollusca.
