Abstract:To separate the long-lived minor actinides (MA(III) = Am(III), Cm(III)) and some specific fission products (FP) such as Pd(II), Mo(VI), Cs(I) and Sr(II) from high-level liquid waste (HLLW), we have been studying a new partitioning process by extraction chromatography using several novel silica-based extraction resins. In this work, we examined the separation behavior of the elements contained in a simulated MA-effluent by the CMPO/SiO2P packed column. In addition, as an attempt to further isolate Am(III) and Cm(III) from the heavy RE(III) such as Eu(III), Gd(III) and Dy(III) contained in the MA-effluent, we investigated the possibility of separation by using a silica-based cationic exchange resin. Furthermore, to isolate Sr(II) from the HLLW, adsorption and separation performances of Sr(II) and some other FP elements were studied by using a novel silica-based crown ether extraction resin, DtBuCH18C6/SiO2P. The experimental results demonstrated that the elements in the simulated MA-effluent can be successfully separated to (1) Pd, (2) MA-hRE and (3) Zr–Mo, by CMPO/SiO2P packed column using water and a dilute DTPA solution as eluents. Am(III) and Cm(III) are expected to be effectively separated from light RE(III) and Y(III) by the SiSCR cationic resin. However, more effective separation between Am(II), Cm(III) and heavy RE(III) such as Eu(III), Gd(III) and Dy(III) needs further approach. DtBuCH18C6/SiO2P showed a highly selective adsorption for Sr(III) so that the Sr(II) could be completely separated from other FPs except a portion of Ba(II).
Computation-Aided Development of Next-Generation Extractants for Trivalent Actinide and Lanthanide Separation

Abstract:The chemical similarities between trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] present a significant challenge in differentiating and separating them, which is a key step toward closing the nuclear fuel cycle. However, the existing separation approaches commonly suffer from demerits such as inadequate separation factors, limited stripping efficiency, and undesired coextraction. In this study, a novel unsymmetrical phenanthroline-derived amide-triazine (Et-Tol-CyMe4-ATPhen) extractant was first designed and then screened with theoretical computation. Meanwhile, they were successfully synthesized by using a de novo construction method. As expected, Et-Tol-CyMe4-ATPhen exhibited a favorable extraction ability for Am(III) and minimal extraction for Ln(III), thereby achieving an extremely selective An(III)/Ln(III) separation with a separation factor of over 280. Furthermore, Am(III) could be easily and effectively stripped from the loaded phases using dilute nitric acid. The underlying coordination mechanisms were thoroughly elucidated by using 1H NMR, ESI-MS, UV-vis absorption spectrometry, photoluminescence spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This work holds promise for addressing the current challenges in An(III)/Ln(III) separation and represents a pioneering endeavor in developing next-generation extractants from first-principles calculation.

Abstract:Due to the similar chemical properties of actinides An(III) and lanthanides Ln(III), their separation in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing is extremely challenging. A 1,10-phenanthroline dipicolinamide-based ligand (PhenBHPPA) has been identified to possess a selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) and could potentially be used for group actinide extraction. In this study, quasi-relativistic density functional theoretical calculations have been used to disclose the interaction mechanisms of Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with PhenBHPPA. The electronic structures, bonding nature, QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) analyses and thermodynamic behaviors of the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with PhenBHPPA have been explored in detail. According to the Wiberg bond indices (WBIs) and QTAIM analyses, interactions between the ligand and metal cations (Am(III) and Eu(III)) exhibit a weakly covalent character. Thermodynamic analyses show that the charged complexes [ML(NO3)(2)](+) appear to be the most stable species in the complexation processes. Moreover, it is more energetically favorable for PhenBHPPA to bind to Am(III) compared to Eu(III). Our study could render new insights into understanding the selectivity of the ligand towards minor actinides and the separation of An(III) from Ln(III) via liquid-liquid extraction.

Abstract:Lanthanides/actinides separation is of importance in many modern industrial engineering fields, e.g. the circulation of the nuclear fuel and rare earth. N,N-dioctyl diglycol amic acid (briefly as DODGA) is known as an effective extractant for extraction of rare earth metal. In this work, two extractants, [N1888][DODGA] and [N4444] [DODGA], were developed by using quaternary ammonium as cations and DODGA as anion. The resultant ionic liquids were used to separate europium from europium-uranium binary component system. The influence of several factors (nitric acid concentration, contact time, temperature, metal ions, extractant concentration, salting agent concentration and stripping) were analyzed. The coordination chemistry of Eu(III) with [N1888][DODGA] and [N4444][DODGA] were investigated by the mole-ratio method. The experimental results confirmed that the separation factors (SF) of Eu(III)/U(VI) were reached 55.44 and 60.35 for [N1888][DODGA] and [N4444] [DODGA]. The stoichiometry of the complex of Eu(III) and [N1888][DODGA] or [N4444][DODGA] were determined as 1:3. Excellent extraction of the target metals and prominent separation factors using these ionic liquids showed that they were viable to separate lanthanides from actinides.
Separation of Lanthanides by High-Speed Countercurrent Chromatography with Organophosphate Ester

Abstract:High-speed countercurrent chromatography is a recently developed separation method that has been remarkably improved in both separating efficiency and separation time. In this paper, this advanced countercurrent chromatographic method was applied to the separation of lanthanides. In combination with the measurement of the partition coefficient of lanthanides, a suitable solvent system was chosen. The separation of a mixture containing the trivalent lanthanides La, Ce, Pr and Nd was performed with 0.15M P-507(2-ethythexyl-2-ethylhexyl hydrogen phosphate) chloroform : hydrochloric acid, pH=2.93, (1:1, V/V) solvent system. The resolution of adjacent bands was enhanced with increasing rotational speed, and was reduced with increasing flow rate of the mobile phase. This enhancement resulted from an increasing number of theoretical plates. Mutual separation of adjacent lanthanides was accomplished with adequate resolution.

Abstract:The extraction of trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) by purified Cyanex 302 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid, denoted as HA) at high and constant metal loading was studied by the co-extraction of Nd-III and other Ln(III) (where Ln = La to Lu, except Pm), and the results were compared with that of unpurified compound. Heavier lanthanides were extracted preferentially, and the average separation factor of adjacent lanthanides by HA was slightly lower than that by unpurified Cyanex 302. The complexation of Ln(III) with HA in the organic phase was further investigated by absorption/fluorescence spectroscopic titration, and IR and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Under the studied experimental conditions, the stoichiometry of the major extracted complex was found to be LnA(3)center dot mH(2)O across the Ln(III) series, but the coordination structures of the lighter and heavier lanthanides were different. The data suggested that a greater number of sulfur atoms coordinate to lighter lanthanides than to heavier lanthanides. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Due to its associated low CO2 emissions, nuclear energy production is rapidly growing. In this context, the treatment of high-level liquid waste (HLLW) of nuclear plants is of high concern to both scientific and industrial communities. Specifically, the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) cations when processing nuclear fuel is a vitally important, yet challenging, step within HLLW because An(III) and Ln(III) have similar chemical properties in solution. To guide the choice of relevant ligands, anions, and solvents for this separation step, in this work, we calculate and compare the free energy of formation of different Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes (which are typical and important An(III) and Ln(III) cation examples), involving two different ligands and three different counter ions in four different solvents. Based on our calculations, we predict that the chosen solvent is a key factor in the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) in treatment of HLLW. This study supports a systematic, computation-assisted screening of solvents and extractive ligands with counter anions as a proficient method to optimize the separation of Ln(III) and An(III).

Abstract:The lanthanide elements have well-documented similarities in their chemical behavior, which makes the valuable trivalent lanthanide cations (Ln(III)) particularly difficult to separate from each other in water. In this work, we apply ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to compare the free energies (Delta G(ads)) associated with the adsorption of lanthanide cations to silica surfaces at a pH condition where SiO- groups are present. The predicted Delta G(ads) for lutetium (Lu(III)) and europium (Eu(III)) are similar within statistical uncertainties; this is in qualitative agreement with our batch adsorption measurements on silica. This finding is remarkable because the two cations exhibit hydration free energies (Delta G(hyd}) that differ by >2 eV, different hydration numbers, and different hydrolysis behavior far from silica surfaces. We observe that the similarity in Lu(III) and Eu(III) Delta G(ads) is the result of a delicate cancellation between the difference in Eu(III) and Lu(III) hydration (Delta G(hyd})), and their difference in binding energies to silica. We propose that disrupting this cancellation at the two end points, either for adsorbed or completely desorbed lanthanides (e.g., via nanoconfinment or mixed solvents), will lead to effective Ln separation.

Abstract:Phosphorylpodands of neutral-type with flexible ethylene glycol chain and diphenylphosphorylmethyl end groups are known for complexation properties towards various cations. In this work, the complexation process between 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-2-oxapropane (L) and lanthanide ions was studied. Namely, the stability constants of lanthanide complexes with L in acetonitrile were estimated by the method of spectrophotometric titration. It was found that the stability constants of Ln 3+ complexes with L increase in the lanthanide series, which is consistent with the extraction and ion-selective properties of L. The extraction ability of L and this ligand in the presence of ionic liquids (IL) such as methyltrioctylammonium nitrate (MTOAN) and bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (C 4 mimTf 2 N) was tested. It was found that in the presence of IL L extracts elements of the yttrium subgroup of lanthanides much better than the cerium subgroup: SF Lu/Ce (L– МТОАN)=2.29; SF Lu/Ce (L– C 4 mimTf 2 N)=110.38). The use of L – C 4 mimTf 2 N mixture in the processes of lanthanide separation into subgroups is much more efficient than the use of L without addition of ILs or the use of L – MTOAN mixture. The ion-selective properties of L towards Ln 3+ ions were studied. Podand L exhibits potentiometric selectivity to Lu 3+ ions.

Abstract:The extraction and complexation of trivalent americium (Am) and lanthanides (Ln) by four 2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (DAPhen) ligands with different alkyl substituent groups on the diamide moiety in an ionic liquid (IL), C(4)mimNTf(2), were studied through a combination of batch extraction, spectroscopic, and calorimetric approaches. All four DAPhen ligands can achieve selective separation of Am(III) from Eu(III), but the detailed extractability and the extraction kinetics are affected significantly by the length of the alkyl substituent groups. UV-vis absorption spectrophotometric titrations indicate that Ln(III) coordinates with all four ligands in a 1:2 mode in the ionic liquid and the binding strength decreases with the increase of the alkyl chain length. The complexation of the DAPhen ligands with Ln(III) in the ionic liquid is driven by highly positive entropies and opposed by endothermic enthalpies. A luminescence spectroscopy study suggests that each DAPhen ligand coordinates in a tetradentate form with Eu(III). This work further unravels the unique extraction and coordination behavior in an ionic liquid system and offers additional guidelines to design more efficient DAPhen ligands for Ln(III)/An(III) separation.

Abstract:Partitioning of americium from lanthanides (Ln) present in used nuclear fuel plays a key role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy1-3. This task is extremely challenging because thermodynamically stable Am(III) and Ln(III) ions have nearly identical ionic radii and coordination chemistry. Oxidization of Am(III) to Am(VI) produces AmO22+ ions distinct with Ln(III) ions, which has the potential to facilitate separations in principle. However, the rapid reduction of Am(VI) back to Am(III) by radiolysis products and organic reagents required for the traditional separation protocols including solvent and solid extractions hampers practical redox-based separations. Herein, we report a nanoscale polyoxometalate (POM) cluster with a vacancy site compatible with the selective coordination of hexavalent actinides (238U, 237Np, 242Pu and 243Am) over trivalent lanthanides in nitric acid media. To our knowledge, this cluster is the most stable Am(VI) species in aqueous media observed so far. Ultrafiltration-based separation of nanoscale Am(VI)-POM clusters from hydrated lanthanide ions by commercially available, fine-pored membranes enables the development of a once-through americium/lanthanide separation strategy that is highly efficient and rapid, does not involve any organic components and requires minimal energy input.

Abstract:The separation of lanthanides (Ln(III)) is a challenging task because of their similar physiochemical properties. In this work, the extraction and complexation behavior of Ln(III) with a saponified phenanthroline carboxamide ligand 9-(N,N-dioctylcarbamoyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-sodium carboxylate (NaDOAPA) was investigated. The saponified ligand NaDOAPA showed a considerable ability to separate heavy lanthanides from light and middle lanthanides in acidic solutions (2 <= pH <= 5), with an average separation factor of 2.5 for the adjacent heavy lanthanides. The complexation mechanism between Ln(III) and NaDOAPA was thoroughly investigated by 1H NMR titration, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometric titration, and fluorescence spectrophotometric titration. The coordination chemistry studies indicated that NaDOAPA could complex with Ln(III) with 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometries. The increasing stability constants (log beta) further suggested a stronger affinity of the ligand for heavy lanthanides, consistent with solvent extraction results. The Ln(III) complexes with different stoichiometries were characterized by crystallography to give a molecular-level explanation of the extraction and complexation mechanism. This work provides a promising choice for the separation of heavy lanthanides. The thorough study of the extraction and complexation of lanthanides will also facilitate the application of the ligand in practical processes.
Formation of W/O Microemulsions in the Extraction of the Lanthanide Series by Purified Cyanex 301

Abstract:The formation of water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions during the extraction of the series of trivalent lanthanides Ln(III) by bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid (HC301, also known as purified Cyanex 301) was studied. The phenomena in the formation of W/O microemulsions were similar in the extraction of all Ln(III) by HC301 at a high neutralization degree (50%), according to the measurement of the distribution ratios of Ln(III) and the concentrations of Na+ and NO3- in the organic phase, IR spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). W/O microemulsions also formed at a low neutralization degree (15%) for the extraction of heavy Ln(III). The coordination environment of the representative heavy lanthanide Ho(III) in the extracted complexes was monitored by absorption spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Unlike the light lanthanide, Nd(III) and Ho(III) in the organic phase did not directly coordinate with the HC301 anions regardless of whether W/O microemulsions formed, which further demonstrated the different extraction behavior of HC301 toward the light lanthanides and the heavy lanthanides.

Abstract:Distribution ratios of Ain and lanthanides (Pr, Nd, Eu) increase with pH value and decrease with lanthanide concentrations in aqueous phase, exhibiting a separation factor as high as 200 in presence of macro amount lanthanides. A countercurrent multistage extraction flowsheet was presented extracting with a mixture of purified Cyanex 301 and TBP. It consisted of 12 stages, 7 for extraction, 3 for washing and 2 for stripping the Am from lanthanides. With the flowsheet, > 99.998% of the Am was extracted. The product flow was only contaminated < 0.04% of the lanthanides.
Separation of Americium from Fission Product Lanthanides Using Cyanex 301 Extraction

Abstract:The extraction behavior of bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid (HBTMPDTP), purified from Cyanex 301, was studied for extracting Am 3+ and trivalent lanthanides (Lns). HBTMPDTP shows very high selectivity for Am. Separation factor (SF) of Am and Eu, SF Am/Eu ,(trace amount) reaches a high value of 5.9×10 3 and SF Am/(Pr+Nd) (macro amount) is about 2×10 3. The mathematical model for the distribution ratios and process parameters calculated for HBTMPDTP extraction was established and the calculated results were verified experimentally. In a five-stage countercurrent process, the extraction rates of Am and Lns were 99.999% and 0.14%, respectively, to fulfill the separation requirements. The efficiency of this process was also verified in a cross-flow extraction experiment using a genuine Am-FPLns fraction. In the presence of TBP, the extraction of Am and Eu is enhanced, but their separation is reduced to some extent. A fairly good separation was achieved in a fractional extraction process using a mixture of HBTMPDTP and TBP in kerosene at low pH.

Abstract:Phenanthroline diamide ligands have been widely used in the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides, but little research has focused on extractants with asymmetrical substitutes. Two novel asymmetrical phenanthroline-based ligands N-2,N-2,N-9-triethyl-N-9-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide (DE-ET-DAPhen) and N-2-ethyl-N-9,N-9-dioctyl-N-2-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide (DO-ET-DAPhen) were first synthesized in this work, whose extraction ability and complexation mechanism to trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] were systematically investigated. The ligands dissolved in n-octanol exhibit good extraction ability and high selectivity toward Am(III) in acidic solutions. The complexation mechanism of the ligands with Ln(III) in solution and solid state was analyzed using slope analysis, H-1 NMR spectrometric titration, ESI-MS, and calorimetric titration. It is revealed that the ligands complex with Am(III)/Eu(III) with 1:1 stoichiometry. The stability constant (log beta) of the complexation reaction of Eu(III) with DE-ET-DAPhen determined by UV-vis spectrophotometric and calorimetric titration is higher than that of DO-ET-DAPhen, indicating the stronger complexation ability of DE-ET-DAPhen. Meanwhile, the calorimetric titration results show that the complexation process is exothermic with a decreased entropy. The structures of 1:1 complexes of Eu(III) and Nd(III) with DE-ET-DAPhen were analyzed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This work proves that ligands containing asymmetrical functional groups are promising for An(III)/Ln(III) separation, which shows great significance in efficient extractants designed for the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing process.

Abstract:.Summary of main observation and conclusion We present a new method for generating europium oxalate compounds by decomposing of N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone in HNO3 media. The reaction exhibits high selectivity towards Eu3+ over UO22+, which suggests that these conditions could be applied to a selective crystallization based separation system for trivalent lanthanides and hexavalent actinides.

Abstract:Separation factors of tracer amounts of Am from micro lanthanides (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) by purified Cyanex 301 extraction in nitrate media have been determined: SFAm/La similar to 3500, SFAm/Ce,Pr similar to 1000, SFAm/Nd similar to 1900, and SFAm/Sm similar to 4500, with an average value >2300. The distribution ratio decreases with increasing lanthanide concentration in the aqueous phase. In the presence of a macro amount of Pr + Nd (0.1 similar to 0.6 M) the separation factors SFAm/Eu and SFAm/Pr+Nd are about 4.7 x 10(3) and 2.1 x 10(3), respectively. The results of the countercurrent fractional process show that by using three extraction stages and two scrubbing stages, >99.99% Am can be separated from a tracer amount of Eu with <0.1% extraction of Eu. Using six extraction stages, >99.99% Am and <0.6% macro amount of Pr + Nd are extracted into the organic phase.
