Abstract:Research on financial resource acquisition has indicated negative consequences for entrepreneurs that act feminine when trying to attract investors. Yet, does this remain true in crowdfunding, where there is a more diverse population of backers? To explore this, we take a gender role congruity perspective to see if gender roles align with crowdfunding success. More specifically, 2,071 entrepreneurs from Kickstarter were rated based on feminine (agreeableness and humility) and masculine (assertiveness and emotional stability) characteristics, and these characteristics were compared to whether or not the entrepreneur met the campaign goal. The results suggest that gender role congruity is a factor for successful crowdfunding, in that, for the most part, female entrepreneurs are rewarded for being more feminine and male entrepreneurs are rewarded for being more masculine. Only assertiveness was expected for both male and female entrepreneurs. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed from these findings.

Abstract:This paper studies the gender gap in accessing financial resources through crowdfunding by developing a novel construct for social capital, latent network capital. We provide original empirical evidence based on 985 projects hosted on Kiva, a platform reaching 3.7 million borrowers, 81 % of them women, assessing how the interplay between latent network capital and the gender of a project proposer affects the amount of funds raised. To this aim, we develop the notion of a latent network whereby two projects are linked if they share a funder, as they both benefit from the visibility of the funder, signalling confidence in them. We capture a project's latent network capital through the project's centrality within this latent network, finding that the latent network capital elasticity of the amount of funds raised, while remaining positive, is lower for women-led projects than for male-led ones extending any pre-existing projects' gender gap.

Abstract:Abstract Equity crowdfunding has the potential to democratize entrepreneurial finance and provide female entrepreneurs with new and equal access to early-stage financing. In this paper, we present first empirical evidence on gender stereotypes in the context of technology ventures in equity crowdfunding. Drawing on signaling and gender role congruity theory, we hypothesize that quality signals have different effects depending on whether they are sent by male or female entrepreneurs. Results taken from a sample of 263 equity crowdfunding campaigns run by technology ventures confirm our hypotheses. In line with gender stereotypes, management experience is beneficial for male entrepreneurs but detrimental for female entrepreneurs. Interestingly, media coverage as a third-party signal has the oppositive effect, being more effective for female entrepreneurs.

Abstract:Previous research has found that female entrepreneurs are disadvantaged in traditional funding markets. Yet, whether the same conclusion can be drawn in the equity crowdfunding market has not yet been determined. Leveraging both stereotype content theory and warm-glow theory, and based on a data set drawn from 259 projects from three equity crowdfunding platforms in China between October 2014 and April 2019, this study empirically examines the underlying relationship between female entrepreneurs and equity crowdfunding. Using Poisson regression analysis, we find that female entrepreneurs are more likely to be funded through equity crowdfunding than their male counterparts. Moreover, we use the presence or absence of lead investors and venture stage (i.e., early versus late) as potential moderators. Our results reveal that while lead investors augment the financing advantage of female entrepreneurs in the equity crowdfunding market, this advantage is weakened in later-development-stage ventures. The findings of this research contribute to the equity crowdfunding and the female entrepreneurship literature by showing that an entrepreneur’s gender influences equity crowdfunding performance. Our findings also extend previous research by demonstrating that both lead investors and venture stage moderate the impact of gender in the equity crowdfunding market.

Abstract:Equity crowdfunding is increasing in popularity as an alternative to traditional financing for start-ups and growth companies to raise money for their business. This study discusses how equity crowdfunding is different from traditional financing, such as angel investors and venture capitalists. We argue this difference is brought further into focus when large numbers of crowd members invest small amounts, as opposed to fewer individuals making large investments. Building on existing research on Social Identity Theory, we look at why some crowdfunding campaigns are more likely to attract these contrasting types of investment (numerous small investments or fewer large investments). A model is presenting linking different characteristics of campaigns to total investment and average investment. This proposed model will be tested using public data gathered from Crowdcube, a leading UK-based equity crowdfunding platform. This study has significant implications for fundraisers who may wish to target different types of crowds according to the nature of their business, i.e. smaller numbers of passionate investors to provide informed input or larger numbers of casual investors to help create awareness and spread positive word of mouth.

Abstract:Crowdfunding has helped thousands of entrepreneurs to finance their innovative products by engaging with large numbers of potential investors. The most effective way for fundraisers to engage with potential backers, is through social media. If used in the right way, social media can enable fundraisers to raise awareness of their campaign, engage with potential investors, and will ultimately have a positive impact on a crowdfunding campaign. Through social media, fundraisers are able to gauge how the public feels about their product or company, which is the main focus of this study. This study brings together research around organisational and marketing image, suggesting that as consumers invest, they move from external consumers to investors that are within the boundary of the company. This brings into question whether consumer sentiment towards the company changes after fundraising, as they become stakeholders. Thus, we use social media to investigate the public sentiment towards a company during different stages of their equity crowdfunding campaign.

Abstract:Purpose The authors investigate whether the individual “completion contributions” that enable online crowdfunding campaigns to meet or exceed their targets tend to be larger in relative terms when made nearer to the funding deadline. As these contributions are likely to have a disproportionate impact upon campaign outcomes, the authors assess whether the investment patterns they observe are consistent with the theory of impact philanthropy. Design/methodology/approach The authors use campaign-level data incorporating observations on campaigns from reward (both all-or-nothing, AoN and keep-it-all, KiA), donation and equity-based platforms. To the knowledge of the authors, the coverage of the data is unparalleled elsewhere in the crowdfunding literature. Using these data, the authors analyze whether completion contributions tend to vary contingent upon both the proximity of the deadline and form of crowdfunding. Findings The authors find that completion contributions tend to vary significantly and positively with proximity to funding deadlines. The authors also find that this relationship tends to be more pronounced among AoN than for KiA campaigns, as well as for donation-based platforms compared with equity-based platforms. Altogether, the patterns of behavior observed are consistent with the theory of impact philanthropy. Originality/value The authors help develop a better understanding of the behaviors of contributors to online crowdfunding campaigns and whether those behaviors are consistent with altruistic motivations. The findings also have considerable value in understanding the non-financial factors associated with the informal financing of business startups.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate ways to mitigate gender bias in entrepreneurial financing. The authors aim to unveil the role entrepreneurs’ gender played in formal and informal financing under Chinese context, as well as the moderating role corporate social responsibility (CSR) played in such relationships. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts ANOVA test and multiple regression method to empirically examine the relationship of entrepreneurs’ gender, formal financing, informal financing and CSR with second hand data from The Eleventh Private Enterprise Survey covering a sample of firms across China. Findings The results demonstrate that comparing to start-ups led by men, start-ups led by women are less likely to get either formal or informal financing. The results also suggest that CSR negatively moderates the impact entrepreneurs’ gender has on formal financing but not on informal financing. Originality/value By focusing on both formal and informal financing, the research of gender’s effects on firms’ financing has been extended. Also, by proving that CSR can help to mitigate gender bias in formal financing, contribution has also been made to the research field of gender financing. This paper contributes to the CSR literature by sorting out another benefit CSR has in new venture financing. Overall, findings of this study deepen the existing understanding of gender issues in the context of entrepreneurial financing.

Abstract:The allocation of venture capital is one of the primary factors determining who takes products to market, which startups succeed or fail, and as such who gets to participate in the shaping of our collective economy. While gender diversity contributes to startup success, most funding is allocated to male-only entrepreneurial teams. In the wake of COVID-19, 2020 is seeing a notable decline in funding to female and mixed-gender teams, giving raise to an urgent need to study and correct the longstanding gender bias in startup funding allocation. We conduct an in-depth data analysis of over 48,000 companies on Crunchbase, comparing funding allocation based on the gender composition of founding teams. Detailed findings across diverse industries and geographies are presented. Further, we construct machine learning models to predict whether startups will reach an equity round, revealing the surprising finding that the CEO's gender is the primary determining factor for attaining funding. Policy implications for this pressing issue are discussed.

Abstract:Crowdfunding has become an alternative source of financing for entrepreneurial new ventures and social projects. While identifying and “tapping the right crowd” of backers has been shown to be crucial for the success of crowdfunding campaigns, we still lack a basic understanding of why individuals become backers in the first place and why so many others do not. Building on information processing theory, we advance crowdfunding awareness as an important precedent to actual engagement as a backer. We hypothesize and—using a sample of 1,042 individuals in Flanders (Belgium)—show that individuals’ crowdfunding awareness depends on whether they are male or female, as well as on the (perceived) socioeconomic environment they are in. Furthermore, our findings suggest that women tend to derive their crowdfunding awareness to a larger extent from these environmental characteristics than men. These results have important implications for theory and practice.

Abstract:Financing entrepreneurship spurs innovation and economic growth. Digital financial platforms that crowdfund equity for entrepreneurs have emerged globally, yet they remain poorly understood. We model equity crowdfunding in terms of the relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised per pitch. We examine heterogeneity in the average amount raised per pitch that is associated with differences across three countries and seven platforms. Using a novel dataset of successful fundraising on the most prominent platforms in the UK, Germany, and the USA, we find the underlying relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised for entrepreneurs is loglinear, with a coefficient less than one and concave to the origin. We identify significant variation in the average amount invested in each pitch across countries and platforms. Our findings have implications for market actors as well as regulators who set competitive frameworks.

Abstract:In recent years, the importance of social lending activities and their effects on consumers have been highlighted by the widespread use of peer-to-peer lending platforms and the global race in fintech. Our study focuses on factors that affect the likelihood that European borrowers on peer-to-peer lending platforms, which are currently based in Estonia, Finland, and Spain, will default on their loans. Starting with the publicly accessible Bondora database, we examine the different economic and social characteristics of the borrowers to analyze the factors that contributed to loan default between 2013 and 2021. We use a Logit model to calculate the ex-post probability of default for factors derived from Principal Component Analysis as well as the original variables supplied by the database. The results show how crucially important education is for borrowers in lowering the risk of default, along with loan characteristics like high debt levels, long loan terms, and high interest rates. In addition, gender plays an important role in determining loan default, with a particular focus on women's conditions within the family. Regarding financial inclusion and its social implications, our findings suggest different ways to improve financial literacy and promote peer-to-peer lending. Future research could develop on the findings by applying them to other lending platforms and countries.

Abstract:We employed the Attraction-Selection-Attribution perspective to examine the effect of gender on crowdfunding. Based on the gender of both project founders and backers, we identified two types of fit, superficial and characteristic. Further, based on characteristic fit, we developed a typology of crowdfunding attractions. We then hypothesized that both superficial and characteristic fits can lead to crowdfunding success. We collected and analyzed data to demonstrate how different characteristics may be important to each attraction. Our findings suggest that similarity is positively related to funding intention for all crowdfunding founders. Male crowdfunding founders should demonstrate their credibility (trustworthiness and expertise) in front of their backers. Female crowdfunding founders should focus on their physical attractiveness, friendliness and warmth to attract more funding from their backers.

Abstract:There is a substantial literature on the relationship between gender and access to finance. However, most studies have been concerned with access to debt finance. More recently, the focus of this research has broadened to examine women and venture capital. This article extends the focus further by examining the role of women in the business angel market, which is more important than the formal venture capital market in terms of both the number of ventures supported and total capital flows. Based on a detailed analysis of business angels in the U.K., the study concludes that women investors who are active in the market differ from their male counterparts in only limited respects. Future research into women business angels, and the possible existence of gender differences, needs to be based on more fully elaborated standpoint epistemologies that focus on the experience of the woman angel investor per se, and center on the examination of the role of homophily, social capital, networking, and competition in investment behavior.

Are Investors Biased Against Women? Analyzing How Gender Affects Startup Funding in Europe

Abstract:One of the main challenges of startups is to raise capital from investors. For startup founders, it is therefore crucial to know whether investors have a bias against women as startup founders and in which way startups face disadvantages due to gender bias. Existing works on gender studies have mainly analyzed the US market. In this paper, we aim to give a more comprehensive picture of gender bias in early-stage startup funding. We examine European startups listed on Crunchbase using Semantic Web technologies and analyze how the share of female founders in a founding team affects the funding amount. We find that the relative amount of female founders has a negative impact on the funding raised. Furthermore, we observe that founder characteristics have an effect on the funding raised based on the founders' gender. Moreover, we find that gender bias in early-stage funding is less prevalent for serial founders with entrepreneurial experience as female founders benefit three times more than male founders from already having founded a startup. Overall, our study suggests that gender bias exists and is worth to be considered in the context of startup funding.

Abstract:Problem Definition: We study how a new development in entrepreneurship --- crowdfunding --- interacts with more traditional financing sources, such as venture capital (VC) and bank financing.Academic/Practical Relevance: While extant literature has mainly focused on predicting crowdfunding campaign outcomes and optimal campaign design, the broader questions of how crowdfunding affects entrepreneurs and how crowdfunding platforms fit in with traditional startup financing sources, such as banks and VCs, have received relatively little attention.Methodology: We model a bargaining game, with a moral-hazard problem between an entrepreneur and a bank, and a double-sided moral-hazard problem between the entrepreneur and a VC, with respect to their non-contractible efforts.Results: We decompose the economic value of crowdfunding into cash gains or losses, costs of bad investments avoided, and project-payoff probability update. This economic value is generally shared between entrepreneurs and investors, benefiting both. Moreover, crowdfunding can help to overcome the agency problems. However, crowdfunding can also harm the entrepreneur and the VC. Competition from other investors reduces value to VC investors, who may walk away from the deal entirely. This can hurt entrepreneurs who lose out on valuable VC operational expertise (operational support, access to supplier networks, etc.). Managerial Implications: The model provides a theoretical underpinning for recent empirical observations that some projects lose VC financing after successful crowdfunding campaigns. Our results complement earlier studies in Operations Management by demonstrating that the entrepreneurs' objectives are more complex than simply maximizing the payoffs from crowdfunding campaigns.

This article examines crowdfunding platform creation in 15 European countries. Despite the omnipresent reach of the internet, national boundaries shape the evolution of the European crowdfunding industry. Specifically, crowdfunding platform creation varies across countries and distinct national patterns emerge for crowdfunding activity in general. Moreover, econometric analyses suggest that country-level factors influence platform creation in European countries, with interesting variations across four crowdfunding models: Donation, Reward, Lending, and Equity.

Abstract:Gender discrimination in accessing financial resources is a mounting concern in developing countries, but empirical evidence of such discrimination is limited. Using data collected from one of the largest peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms in China, we investigate potential gender discrimination in online P2P credit lending market in China. The results illustrate that female borrowers are more likely to be funded than male borrowers; but in exchange for higher funding success, female borrowers are found to pay higher interest rates. Moreover, the default rates of loans from female borrowers are significantly lower than those from male borrowers. Finally, we found that a borrower’s gender moderates the relationships between the borrower’ attributes and lending outcomes. The findings imply that profit-based statistical discrimination and costly taste-based discrimination co-exist in this online peer-to-peer lending market, but the underlying reasons for the discriminations are different. The implications for research and practice along with the limitations of this study are discussed accordingly.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of female leadership on the financial constraints of firms, which are publicly listed entrepreneurial enterprises in China. Utilizing data from 938 companies on the China Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) over a period of 2013-2022, this paper explores how the female presence in CEO positions, senior management, and board membership influences a firm's ability to manage financial constraints. Our analysis employs the Kaplan-Zingales (KZ) Index to measure these constraints, encompassing some key financial factors such as cash flow, dividends, and leverage. The findings reveal that companies with female CEOs or a higher proportion of women in top management are associated with reduced financial constraints. However, the influence of female board members is less clear-cut. Our study also delves into the variances of these effects between high-tech and low-tech industry sectors, emphasizing how internal gender biases in high-tech industries may impede the alleviation of financing constraints on firms. This research contributes to a nuanced understanding of the role of gender dynamics in corporate financial management, especially in the context of China's evolving economic landscape. It underscores the importance of promoting female leadership not only for gender equity but also for enhancing corporate financial resilience.

Abstract:This paper studies the impact of competition, Brexit and the Covid‐19 pandemic on UK equity crowdfunding success. Using data from Crowdcube, we account for competition from different angles, varying from within the platform and between Crowdcube and its competitors, while controlling for various campaign and firm characteristics. Our sample period, 2011–2020, covers two unprecedented events, Brexit and the Coronavirus outbreak. We find that competition and the pandemic are positively related to crowdfunding success, while Brexit appears to impose a detrimental impact on small and medium enterprises' (SMEs') equity financing via online crowdfunding. Our results highlight the bright‐side effect of competition, in which crowdfunding investors could back different campaigns and do not appear to be drawn away by contemporary campaigns in other competitive marketplaces. Investors were also reportedly more active during the pandemic. As SMEs are likely to be most negatively impacted by Brexit, future policy interventions to stimulate capital investment and replace European funding remain crucial to moderate uncertainties.
