Improvement of Medical Terminology Education With Interactive Learning Module

Abstract:Introduction: Early in their first year, medical students at USD Sanford School of Medicine (SSOM) must pass a short-course in medical terminology. Taught using simple PowerPoint presentation, learning has been very dependent on rote memorization. In reviewing the literature, a study examining the effects of teaching medical terminology using mnemonics and imagery showed higher test scores with increasing exposure to this experimental learning method. Another study looked at the effects on learning with the use of an online interactive multimedia learning module to teach students about a common medical condition and showed increased test scores in the students using this experimental module. The focus of this project was to improve the quality of study materials for the Medical Terminology course at SSOM by using these experimental learning methods. The hypothesis was that using enhanced learning modules, including the addition of pictures, images, mnemonics, word association tools, practice questions, and video lectures would facilitate learning and improve test scores and retention of the material compared to depending mainly on rote memorization. Methods: Learning modules were created, including modified PowerPoint slides with pictures/images, mnemonics, word associations, practice questions, and recorded video lectures. In this study, students self-selected a learning technique. The experimental group of students used the modified PowerPoint slides and/or video lectures to aid in their studies for the Medical Terminology exam. The control group of students did not use these resources, and instead used the PowerPoint presentations normally given out to students as per the curriculum. One month after students took the Medical Terminology final exam, they took a retention exam which contained 20 questions from the final exam. The scores for each question were tabulated and compared to the original score. A survey was also sent out via email to SSOM classes of 2023 and 2024 to assess their perceptions regarding the experimental modified PowerPoint slides and video lectures. Results: The group using the experimental learning method had average score decrease of 12.1 percent (SD=0.9 percent) on retention exam, compared to control group average decrease of 16.2 percent (SD=12.3 percent). 42 survey responses was collected. Survey responses showed n=21 from the class of 2023 and n=21 from the class of 2024. 38.1 percent of students reported using both the modified PowerPoints + lectures recorded on Panopto, and 23.81 percent of students reported using only the modified PowerPoints. 97.62 percent of students agreed Pictures/Images help learning, 90.48 percent agreed mnemonics help learning, and 100 percent agreed practice questions help learning. Notably, 16.7 percent of respondents agreed that large blocks of descriptive text help learning. Conclusions: No statistically significant differences were found between the two student groups on retention exam. However, over 90 percent of students agreed that the addition of modified materials helped learn medical terminology terms, and that the modified learning materials adequately prepared them for the final exam. These results support the inclusion of enhanced learning tools for medical terminology education, including images of disease processes, mnemonics, and practice questions. Limitations include student self-selection of study method, small sample size of students taking the retention exam, and response bias with survey dissemination.
Using digital pathology in competency based case scenarios as an efficient pathology learning platform

Abstract:Abstract Introduction/Objective Case-based learning has been utilized for implementation in learning pathological and clinical features of diseases in an integrated, facile manner for some time now. We applied certain novel technological advances to improve case-based learning - short clinical vignettes describing all pertinent pathologic features with the help of digital pathology images - including both negative and positive findings. The clinical cases combined with digital pathological and radiological images and labs were uploaded on Moodle platform for student access, to be followed later by an online interactive discussion via Zoom. Methods/Case Report Clinical cases meticulously woven with digital pathological and radiological images and labs were centralized on 3 fundamental competencies – disease processes, systemic pathology and diagnostic & therapeutic pathology. This was followed by corresponding Q-A session using the “breakout room” feature of Zoom to form a differential diagnosis, reach a final diagnosis and discuss appropriate management options. Students exited the breakout rooms after individual groupwork to return to the main Zoom session for final discussion. Novel web- based tools, social media assistance, and other online resources were utilized to enhance the online learning experience. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) Student feedback confirmed that our online instructional methodology was incredibly stimulatory, particularly in topics that were difficult to grasp using traditional pedagogical methods. Summative and formative assessments indicated performance gain, enhanced motivation, improved critical thinking and evolved ability to solve clinical cases. Drawbacks included irregular student participation, lack of face-to-face interaction, network issues and time differences. Conclusion Our pathology pedagogy provides flexibility and self-directed learning skills, while simultaneously covering the geographical limitations. This not only helps students in developing critical clinical reasoning, but also enables them to acquire life-long learning and problem-solving skills. The technique proved to be a powerful educational tool that facilitated an interactive learning experience beyond the classroom setting, with integration of multidisciplinary aspects in learning Pathology. Additionally, the communication competency was also covered during case discussion among students, promoting literary, verbal and team-working capabilities.

Abstract:In this paper, the results of barium oxide doped indium oxide films as sensor material for monitoring ppm levels of NOx (a mixture of NO and NO2) in ambient have been presented. The parameters for obtaining nanostructured and textured thin films of Ba doped In2O3 using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique have been optimized. These films are found capable of sensing down to 0.5 ppm NOx concentration in air. The optimum operating temperature of the sensor is found to be 300degC. Response and retrace times are typically 60 and 300 seconds respectively. This sensor did not show significant response to hydrogen and petroleum gas up to 5000 ppm each.
Feasibility of Kahoot! as a Real-Time Assessment Tool in (Histo-)pathology Classroom Teaching

Abstract:Purpose: New technologies like gamification are continuously integrated into medical education during the last years. However, the benefit and implementation of such gaming platforms are not clearly studied. This analysis assesses the feasibility of Kahoot! regarding simplicity and low-cost performance as a learning/teaching tool for medical education in (histo-)pathology. Materials and methods: In this feasibility pilot study, we developed 36 modules for different benign and malignant tumors, covering four major topics: gastrointestinal tract, dermatology, urogenital tract, and hematology. Each module included histomorphological text-based questions for education of 2nd-year medical students. The online gaming-platform Kahoot! was anonymously implemented before and after "classical" medical education which included discussions of histological slides for each tumor entity using Microsoft PowerPoint-based presentations in combination with microscopical demonstrations. Participating students were invited to a seven-questions evaluation about the online educational approach. Results: Overall, 23 of 51 students of the study class completed the pre- and the post-evaluation of Kahoot! in one or more organ systems. The percentage of correct answers increased from the initial mean/median of 47.2/45% to 77.2/76.3%. Simultaneously, the time for answering questions decreased by roughly 50% (from mean/median time of 9.1/8.3 seconds to 5.1/4.3 seconds) from pre- to post-assessment. The results were independent of gender; however, there were scoring differences between the different organ systems. Students positively evaluated the routine implementation of the gaming-platform Kahoot! within medical education. Conclusion: Kahoot! is as a simple, direct, and low-cost application in medical teaching improving learning outcomes of pathomorphological topics with high acceptance by students. Kahoot!-based evaluations should be also performed in more advanced topics in the field of histopathology.

Abstract:AIM To determine the frequency of CYP2D6 poor metabolizers (PMs) in a Faroese patient group medicated with amitriptyline (AT) and to investigate plasma concentrations of AT and metabolites in relation to CYP2D6. METHODS CYP2D6 phenotype and genotype were determined in 23 Faroese patients treated with AT. Plasma concentrations of AT and metabolites were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and investigated in relation to CYP2D6 activity. RESULTS Of the 23 patients phenotyped and genotyped, five (22%) (95% confidence interval 7.5, 43.7) were CYP2D6 PMs. No difference was found in AT daily dosage between PMs (median 25 mg day(-1); range 5-80) and extensive metabolizers (EMs) (median 27.5 mg day(-1); range 10-100). The (E)-10-OH-nortriptyline (NT)/dose concentrations were higher in EMs than in PMs and the NT/(E)-10-OH-NT and AT/(E)-10-OH-AT ratios were higher in PMs compared with EMs. The log sparteine metabolic ratio correlated positively with the NT/(E)-10-OH-NT ratio (r(s) = 0.821; P < 0.0005) and the AT/(E)-10-OH-AT ratio (r(s) = 0.605; P < 0.006). CONCLUSION A high proportion of CYP2D6 PMs was found in a Faroese patient group medicated with AT. However, similar doses of AT and concentrations of AT and NT were noted in EMs and PMs, probably due to varying doses and indications for AT treatment.

Abstract:Learning 2D sectional anatomy facilitates the comprehension of 3D anatomical structures, anatomical relationships, and radiological anatomy. However, the efficacy of technology‐enhanced collaborative instructional activities in sectional anatomy remains unclear, especially if theoretical frameworks, namely the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), are applied in instructional design. Thus, this study compared the educational impact of distinct 45‐min‐long technology‐enhanced collaborative learning tasks in sectional anatomy. A sample of 115 first‐year medical students was randomly divided into three experimental groups that used different supporting technologies to learn the sectional anatomy of the chest: IMAIOS e‐learning platform and Microsoft Surface Hub (n = 37); anatomage table (n = 38); anatomage table with CTML‐based presets (n = 40). Prelearning and postlearning tests revealed that significant knowledge gains in sectional anatomy were obtained by all groups even though no inter‐group differences were found. Moreover, a five‐point Likert scale questionnaire showed that the learning session was highly valued by all participants and that users of the anatomage with CTML‐based presets reported higher enjoyment than users of the IMAIOS system (mean difference = 0.400; p = 0.037). In addition, students using the IMAIOS system and the anatomage with CTML‐based presets provided System Usability Scale (SUS) scores of 67.64 and 67.69, respectively, reaching the benchmark of usability. By contrast, students using the anatomage table without presets awarded a SUS score of 64.14. These results suggest that the integration of multimedia technologies in anatomy teaching and learning should be grounded on CTML principles of instructional design. Otherwise, students' perceptions of ed‐tech usability are potentially hindered.

Development of a Novel Peer-sharing Application to Supplement Learning from Cadaveric Dissection

Abstract:Gross anatomy dissection in contemporary medical education must balance the traditional value of learning from the cadaver with the possibilities created by the use of digital tools as supplemental resources that personalize and deepen the student learning experience. This study broadly examined the design, implementation, and use of AnatomyShare, a novel iPad application employing learner-generated content that allows students to securely share annotated images of their dissections with each other and take faculty-generated image-based quizzes during their first-year medical school gross anatomy course. Almost all students enrolled in the course used the application (N = 176; 91% use based on analytics). Seventy-five students responded to a survey asking how and when they used the application, along with their perceptions of its usefulness and contribution to learning. More students reported using the application outside of laboratory (97.3%) than during laboratory (85.3%), despite only in-laboratory use being required. Taking quizzes using the "Exam" feature was the highest rated use of AnatomyShare, and students cited that the application exposed them to anatomical variation and motivated them to correctly identify structures during dissection. While steps need to be taken to combat low-quality learner-generated content and to enhance meaningful student interaction and collaboration, AnatomyShare was a feasible and highly rated supplement to dissection that provided valuable assessment opportunities for students. Future research will examine the impact of use on course grades and engagement in gross anatomy dissection.
Development and evaluation of an online integrative histology module: simple design, low-cost, and improves pathology self-efficacy

Abstract:Integration of core concepts is an important aspect of medical curriculum enhancement. Challenges to improving integration include the risk of curtailing the basic sciences in the process and the push to decrease contact hours in medical curricula. Self-paced learning tools can be developed that deliberately relate basic and clinical sciences to aid students in making interdisciplinary connections. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a self-paced learning module that would be applicable to integration of different disciplines in medical education. The module was intended to improve integration between histology and anatomic pathology before a respiratory pathology laboratory session. Qualtrics XM, a survey software commonly available at educational institutions, was used in a novel manner to create the module. Module activities included pre- and post-module quizzes; four short videos emphasizing normal histological features and recalling associated pathologies; three categorization activities designed for students to recognize normal versus abnormal characteristics of lung specimens; and post-activity feedback. Preliminary data from first-year medical students showed that post-module quiz scores were significantly higher than pre-module quiz scores (p < 0.001) and that module users' pre-laboratory pathology self-efficacy was significantly higher than non-users (p < 0.05). These data suggest that module use facilitated short-term knowledge gain and improved pathology self-efficacy before the laboratory session. Online modules can be developed affordably using Qualtrics XM to integrate anatomical sciences with other disciplines, while providing students interactive learning resources without increasing contact hours. The module presented in this report focused on normal versus abnormal morphology, guiding students through recognizing the continuum from healthy to disease states before learning about the pathologies more in depth. A similar module design would likely be effective in integrating other disciplines in medicine, especially in disciplines that require recognition of changes in morphology.
Undergraduate Medical Students' Usage and Perceptions of Anatomical Case-Based Learning: Comparison of Facilitated Small Group Discussions and eLearning Resources

Abstract:While case-based discussions can empower students to apply knowledge to contextual clinical situations, scheduling these activities is a challenge in crowded curricula. Case-based eLearning activities, derived from existing cases discussed within anatomy small group tutorials, were created incorporating principles such as interactivity, reinforcement, and feedback. Over half of the students accessed one or more of these online cases, with 18% accessing all eight online cases provided. Access increased as the semester progressed, particularly just before summative examinations, implying students used these primarily as revision aides. Students rated both formats highly, but favored the online format with regard to enjoyment (P = 0.048), learning (P = 0.101), and feedback (P = 0.086). However, more students discussed these cases in small group tutorials within the anatomy dissecting room than completed them online (122 vs. 67) and themes emerging from free text comments included a desire to have more time dedicated to these cases during small group tutorials, and an appreciation for the opportunity for discussion with staff and learning through doing. Additionally, native English speakers rated the anatomy room discussions significantly higher in all aspects than non-native English speakers, suggesting that non-native speakers may be hesitant or reluctant to fully participate in front of peers. While online case-based learning activities are a useful adjunct to anatomy teaching, particularly for revision, assumptions that "digital natives" have an innate preference for digital resources require critical evaluation, as students still place a high value on opportunities for discussion with staff during their studies.
Replicating Anatomical Teaching Specimens Using 3D Modeling Embedded Within a Multimodal e-Learning Course: Pre-Post Study Exploring the Impact on Medical Education During COVID-19

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant effects on anatomy education. During the pandemic, students have had no access to cadavers, which has been the principal method of learning anatomy. We created and tested a customized congenital heart disease e-learning course for medical students that contained interactive 3D models of anonymized pediatric congenital heart defects. Objective The aim of this study is to assess whether a multimodal e-learning course contributed to learning outcomes in a cohort of first-year undergraduate medical students studying congenital heart diseases. The secondary aim is to assess student attitudes and experiences associated with multimodal e-learning. Methods The pre-post study design involved 290 first-year undergraduate medical students. Recruitment was conducted by course instructors. Data were collected before and after using the course. The primary outcome was knowledge acquisition (test scores). The secondary outcomes included attitudes and experiences, time to complete the modules, and browser metadata. Results A total of 141 students were included in the final analysis. Students’ knowledge significantly improved by an average of 44.6% (63/141) when using the course (SD 1.7%; Z=−10.287; P<.001). Most students (108/122, 88.3%) were highly motivated to learn with the course, and most (114/122, 93.5%) reported positive experiences with the course. There was a strong correlation between attitudes and experiences, which was statistically significant (rs=0.687; P<.001; n=122). No relationships were found between the change in test scores and attitudes (P=.70) or experiences (P=.47). Students most frequently completed the e-learning course with Chrome (109/141, 77.3%) and on Apple macOS (86/141, 61%) or Windows 10 (52/141, 36.9%). Most students (117/141, 83%) had devices with high-definition screens. Most students (83/141, 58.9%) completed the course in <3 hours. Conclusions Multimodal e-learning could be a viable solution in improving learning outcomes and experiences for undergraduate medical students who do not have access to cadavers. Future research should focus on validating long-term learning outcomes.
Development of an interactive e-learning software "Histologie für Mediziner" for medical histology courses and its overall impact on learning outcomes and motivation

Abstract:Objective: To develop and evaluate an interactive histology learning software for medical students in the preclinical study phase. The educational design of the software was based on current learning theory models, such as the Cognitive load theory, Cognitive theory of multimedia learning, and the ARCS model, so that the acquired knowledge can be repeated using a diversified design. Moreover, the learning effects achieved by using the software shall be evaluated. Apart from the software's usability, the influence of the learning theory principles on the students' motivation shall be assessed. Methodology: The software was evaluated using an experimental wait list control group with a pre-/post-test design (n=213). Depending on the group they were assigned to, students learned the histology contents of chapter "Liver, gall bladder, pancreas" using the traditional program of the Goethe University (n=65), the new interactive software (n=56), or without any of the two software versions (n=92). The influence of the different learning aids on the acquisition of knowledge was assessed with three questionnaires comprising four different multiple choice questions each. For the evaluation of the usability and motivational factors, a second test was added to the questionnaire of both software versions. Results: The interactive software was rated significantly better with regard to usability and motivational aspects than the traditional learning program (F(7, 113)=12.48, p<.001, partial η2=.436). Moreover, use of the interactive software resulted in a significant increase of knowledge acquisition as compared to the group of students who had learned without any of the two software versions (0.77, p=.001). Conclusion: With regard to the histology contents, usability was comparable to the official learning program. Interactive elements and the educational design contributed to an increase of the factors that are essential for intrinsic motivation. Thus, our program can be valuable tool to supplement the curriculum as an additional service.
The Daily Fact Pile: Exploring Mutual Microlearning in Neurology Resident Education

Abstract:Problem: A significant proportion of learning during residency takes place through informal channels. Spontaneous collaboration among medical learners significantly contributes to this informal learning and is increasingly recognized as a component of the hidden curriculum in medical education. Yet historically, a disproportionate emphasis in medical education has been placed on didactic, structured, and faculty-initiated methods, leaving an important force in medical education understudied and underutilized. We hypothesize that there is significant educational potential in studying and deploying targeted tools to facilitate collaboration among medical learners. Intervention: At our institution, neurology residents implemented the "Daily Fact Pile" (DFP), a resident-led, email-based collaboration that served as a platform to share clinical pearls in an informal, digital way. Participation was voluntary and participants were encouraged to share facts that were new to them and thought to be clinically relevant. Motivated by the positive collective experience, we conducted a retrospective examination of this phenomenon. In this context, we developed the concept of "mutual microlearning" to characterize this efficient, multidirectional exchange of information. Context: Thirty-six residents in a single neurology residency program utilized the DFP at a large university hospital in the USA between 2018 and 2019. After 21 months of spontaneous and voluntary participation, we assessed the feasibility of the DFP, its impact on the education and morale of neurology residents, and compared its mutual microlearning approach to traditional lectures. This was done through a survey of the DFP participants with a response rate of 80.7%, and analysis of the statistics of participation and interaction with the DFP. Impact: Most participants felt that the DFP was beneficial to their education and thought they often or always learned something new from reading the DFP. The impact of the DFP extended beyond education by improving interest in neurology, morale, and sense of teamwork. The DFP was feasible during neurology residency and participation was high, though participants were more likely to read facts than share them. Lessons learned: Mutual microlearning represents an opportunity to augment residents' education, and well-designed mutual microlearning tools hold promise for complementing traditional teaching methods. We learned that efficiency, ease of use, and a supportive, non-judgmental environment are all essential to the success of such tools. Future research should delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms of mutual microlearning to establish its position within the theoretical frameworks of medical education.

Abstract:Despite a rich literature in the field of multimedia instruction (MMI), there is a paucity of evidence‐based research investigating the incorporation of multimedia design principles and efficacy evaluation in the field of medical education. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate learning outcomes when principles from cognitive theory were applied to the design of an online MMI tool. A pre‐existing MMI tool of the cranial nerves was modified using principles derived from cognitive theories of multimedia learning to develop a sister tool. The principles used were segmentation, pre‐training, off‐loading from visual to auditory channel, and synchronizing narration with animation. The pre‐existing tool served as a control and the modified sister tool, the treatment. A pilot, randomized control study was conducted with graduate and medical students followed by a post‐test knowledge and preference questionnaire. We hypothesize that students using the modified sister tool will benefit from cognitive load reduction and will score higher on the post‐test knowledge questionnaires as well as indicating higher preference for their MMI tool compared to the control. Abstract:Objective The integration of curriculum is an important approach for enhancing medical education and facilitating interdisciplinary connections among students. This study aimed to develop a new morphological integrated teaching mode for undergraduate stomatology education by combining stomatological pathology and radiology courses with instructional media. Methods In total, 63 undergraduates were included in this study and divided into three groups: traditional (Group T; the control group) and two experimental groups: KoPa WiFi EDU (Group K), and KoPa WiFi EDU‐cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) (Group K‐C). All participants attended a 2‐h lecture on periapical cysts and completed the first theoretical test. Subsequently, they underwent a 4‐h experimental training session on the pathology and radiology of periapical cysts using different teaching methods. Following the training, participants completed the second theoretical test and underwent the first image‐reading skill evaluation. After a 3‐month period, participants completed the third theoretical test and underwent the second image‐reading skill evaluation. The effectiveness of the teaching methods was assessed by analyzing the differences in theoretical test and experimental skill evaluation scores. Results There were no significant differences in the first theoretical outcomes among three groups (p > 0.05). Student-focused virtual histology education: Do new scenarios and digital technology matter?

Abstract:This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. Innovative changes have become a critical part of teaching when resources are limited. In this study, we examined whether the student-oriented teaching method, when powered by virtual microscopy, improves histology learning compared to traditional microscope-based studies. Anonymous and voluntary post-course surveys were administered to students and essays were processed for content analysis. Google Analytics was used to obtain accurate Internet usage monitoring for WEBMICROSCOPE®. Using SPSS statistics, the examination scores for 2016 were compared to those of previous year, when the course was taught with a traditional-microscope-based model. The results demonstrated that the new teaching scenario was an effective tool, based on the mean examination scores in 2016 compared to the identical groups in 2015. The survey analysis showed that the students benefited more from using WEBMICROSCOPE® and that they frequently gained access to the Web server when they were not in class. The new scenario helped clarify the concept of histology for most of the students and was generally appreciated during teamwork-based histology classes. Students perceived that the use of the digital technology significantly influenced their confidence in learning the fundamentals of histology. In addition, changing to the new teaching scenario powered by WEBMICROSCOPE® improved the students' motivation to participate in discussions and better understand the concept of Histology between the 2015 and 2016 academic years. Finally, these changes all had a positive impact on the students' attention and satisfaction.

Abstract:Background: Histopathology and Cytopathology are crucial aspects of medical education. With a paradigm shift from traditional to competency-based curriculum, teaching strategies are crucial to enable learning. we undertook a comparative analysis to evaluate the efficacy of two distinct teaching Learning tools—diagrams and microscopic images—in enhancing the observational and cognitive skills of medical students. Material and methods: A mixed method research design was planned to obtain quantitative data followed by qualitative data. These were later integrated for interpretation. A series of thirty microscopic images of cells, from topics already taught and diagrams of the same cells, drawn with Hematoxylin Eosin pencils, were projected to assess cell identification. Students were tasked with identifying and documenting their observations. The microscopic images were sourced from standard textbooks, while the diagrams were prepared by faculty and validated by subject experts. Responses were evaluated and scores analyzed using paired t-test. Focus group discussion was conducted to obtain qualitative data. Results: A group of 74 second-year medical students voluntarily participated in this study. Statistical analysis revealed that the scores for diagram identification were significantly higher than those for microscopic images, with a p-value of less than 0.05. Diagrams had a positive impact. Conclusion: Diagrams were superior to microscopic images in facilitating cell identification. This study underscores the importance of incorporating drawing-based teaching and learning methods in cytology as they encourage a more profound and effective learning process. Continued inclusion of diagrams in medical education to enhance students' cell identification skills is recommended. Keywords: Cytopathology, Curriculum, Medical Education, Drawing

Abstract:Aims Agility in educational delivery has been catalyzed in response to national restrictions mandated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Increased use of assistive technologies further aligns with the General Medical Council's aims that medical educators provide an 'accessible training experience'. The study examined medical students' receptiveness to different types of interactive teaching. Two undergraduate cohorts received teaching on the Mental State Examination, either socially-distanced delivered by traditional powerpoint or remotely by mind-mapping software on a tablet hand-held digital device. We required an effective program which would retain the popular interactive elements of Psychiatry teaching and promote inclusivity across students' diverse learning styles. Method Two cohorts of Year 2 students from the Universities of Dundee and St Andrew's Scottish Graduate-Entry Medicine (scotGEM) course took part in an Introduction to Psychiatry seminar which involved a presentation of the Mental State Examination. One was conducted in a face-to-face setting via traditional PowerPoint. The second was conducted via remote-conferencing with mindmaps of key concepts drawn and screen-shared live to students as teaching progressed. This was a qualitative study, with online links to questionnaires for 24 student participants across 5 domains. (1. The tutorial met my learning objectives, 2. The format was suitable for me, 3. The balance of theory and cases was suitable for me, 4. The tutorial was of appropriate length, 5. I was satisfied with the performance) Response options included: strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree. A section was also included with open-ended questions pooled for thematic analysis. Result Response rate reached >60% with >80% respondents answering strongly agree across all domains. Thematic results demonstrated positive responses across both teaching sessions, with the interactive elements valued by students. Comments included: “great job was done with the delivery of the session considering it was online rather than in person”; “drawing element was fantastic”; “Good: interactivity of the session drawing and creativity element”. Conclusion The Mental State Examination (MSE) via live-drawn mind-maps allows salient clinical information to be conceptualised in non-linear diagramatic format. This paediological approach can offer further access points across wide range of learning styles. This pilot study demonstrated such interactive components of Psychiatry teaching continue to be well received and can be effectively delivered remotely. Such sessions also serve to promote inclusivity, linking those who are geographically distant in addition to the visual learner and the neurodiverse. We aim to incorporate these dynamic teaching sessions into our online induction programs and disseminate Intelligent Tutorials to our remote and rural learners throughout Scotland.

The Use of Screencasts with Embedded Whole-Slide Scans and Hyperlinks to Teach Anatomic Pathology in a Supervised Digital Environment

Abstract:Background: There is an increasing interest in using digitized whole-slide imaging (WSI) for routine surgical pathology diagnoses. Screencasts are digital recordings of computer screen output with advanced interactive features that allow for the preparation of videos. Screencasts that include hyperlinks to WSIs could help teach pathology residents how to become familiar with technologies that they are likely to use in their future career. Materials and methods: Twenty screencasts were prepared with Camtasia 2.0 software (TechSmith, Okemos, MI, USA). They included clinical history, videos of chest X-rays and/or chest computed tomography images, links to WSI digitized with an Aperio Turbo AT scanner (Leica Biosystems, Buffalo Grove, IL, USA), pre- and posttests, and faculty-narrated videos of the WSI in a manner closely resembling a slide seminar and other educational materials. Screencasts were saved in a hospital network, Screencast.com, YouTube.com, and Vimeo.com. The screencasts were viewed by 12 pathology residents and fellows who made diagnoses, answered the quizzes, and took a survey with questions designed to evaluate their perception of the quality of this technology. Quiz results were automatically e-mailed to faculty. Pre- and posttest results were compared using a paired t-test. Results: Screencasts can be viewed with Windows PC and Mac operating systems and mobile devices; only videos saved in our network and screencast.com could be used to generate quizzes. Participants' feedback was very favorable with average scores ranging from 4.5 to 4.8 (on a scale of 5). Mean posttest scores (87.0% [±21.6%]) were significantly improved over those in the pretest quizzes (48.5% [±31.2%]) (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Screencasts with WSI that allow residents and fellows to diagnose cases using digital microscopy may prove to be a useful technology to enhance the pathology education. Future studies with larger numbers of screencasts and participants are needed to optimize various teaching strategies.

Abstract:Background: Building on a series of higher educational arts/medicine initiatives, an interdisciplinary drawing module themed on the human body was developed for both year 3 Craft students and year 3 Medicine degree students. This became the subject of a research project exploring how the collaborative approach to drawing adopted on this module impacted on the students' learning. In this article, emphasis is given to issues thought to have most potential relevance to medical education. Methods: Using an ethnographic research design, the methods adopted were: direct observation of all aspects of the module sessions, audio and video recordings and photographs of the sessions, the incorporation of a semi-structured discussion at the end of each session, and anonymous student questionnaires. Results: A number of key themes emerged. The complex, phased and multi-sensory nature of the 'critical looking' skills developed through the drawing exercises was seen as of potential value in medical education, being proposed as analogous to processes involved in clinical examination and diagnosis. The experience of interdisciplinary collaborative drawing was significant to the students as a creative, participatory and responsive form of learning. The emphasis on the physical experience of drawing and the thematic use of the human body as drawing subject led to reflective discussions about bodily knowledge and understanding. There were indications that students had a meta-cognitive awareness of the learning shifts that had occurred and the sessions provoked constructive self-reflective explorations of pre-professional identity. Conclusions: This preliminary study suggests, through the themes identified, that there may be potential learning outcomes for medical students in this model of interdisciplinary collaborative drawing of the human body. Further research is needed to explore their applicability and value to medical education. There is a need to explore in more depth the beliefs, motivations and learning styles of medical students opting for the module, the significance and weighting of different learning and teaching elements in the module and the impact of the learning on medical students in the immediate post-module phase.

Abstract:Digital anatomy learning platforms hold potential academic benefits, yet there is currently no universally accepted pedagogical framework guiding their utilization. This study applied the lens of Laurillard's conversational framework to explore second‐year medical students' experiences with a digital anatomy learning platform at a South African university. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed. Phase 1 used whole population (N = 280) sampling to survey students' usage of, and access to, the digital anatomy learning platform. The survey response rate was 29%, with 47% of respondents reporting usage of the platform. Internet and device limitations were minimal, with 74% and 87% respectively reporting no hindrance. While 39% found Primal Pictures easy to use and helpful to their learning, a disconnect emerged between perceived value and actual usage, with only 5% of participants exhibiting high usage. Phase 2 used purposive sampling (n = 13) based on students' usage of digital anatomy learning platforms. Two focus groups and two individual interviews explored students' use of the learning platform. Qualitative data were both deductively and inductively analyzed. Two themes were identified: types of learning and influencers of learning. Findings from the deductive analysis indicated that students engaged mainly in acquisition‐based learning. Inductive analysis showed students encountered various factors that influenced their learning behavior. Affective domain development emerged as a key factor in students' engagement with their anatomy studies and the digital learning platform, suggesting a potential gap in the conversational framework. Digital anatomy learning platforms may strengthen approaches to learning anatomy if implemented systematically, together with pre‐training.
