Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence of sleep problems and associated factors among Brazilian physiotherapists during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional online survey of physiotherapists in Brazil. Sociodemographic data, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index – PSQI) and symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress (21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – DASS-21) were assessed. Results: 342 physiotherapists responded the survey (18% male, median age 31 [27–38] years, 78% frontline workers). The three biggest fears reported by frontline physiotherapists were fear of being infected (48%), shortage of personal protective equipment (24%) and the severity of the disease (16%). The overall prevalence of poor sleep quality was 86%. Frontline physiotherapists showed worse scores on all PSQI components but sleep latency, disturbances and daytime dysfunction (p ≤ 0.037). Symptoms of anxiety and stress were highest in frontline workers (p ≤ 0.032). Being a frontline worker was independently associated with a poor sleep quality (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.99 [1.01 to 3.93]). Conclusion: Poor sleep quality was highly prevalent among Brazilian physiotherapists during the COVID-19 outbreak. Frontline physiotherapists showed worse sleep quality and more symptoms of anxiety and stress than non-frontline physiotherapists. Being at the frontline was associated with a higher chance of poor sleep quality.

Abstract:Background The exponential increase in SARS-CoV-2 infection has impacted on a change in the professional and personal lifestyle of the world's population. Health professionals working on the front line experienced increased work hours and exposure to risk factors as a result of the high demand for severe cases. The hospital physiotherapist, one of those responsible for the therapeutic management of COVID-19, suffered repercussions from the pandemic, which possibly contributed to physical and mental exhaustion. Objectives To analyze the quality of life and sleep of physiotherapists working on the front lines against COVID-19. Methods This is a cross-sectional study, involving physiotherapists of both sexes over the age of 18, working on the front line against COVID-19 in hospital units, who agreed to participate in the research by signing the term of free and informed consent (TCLE). Sociodemographic data, quality of life using the Short Form questionnaire (SF-36) and sleep index using the Pittsburgh were evaluated. Data collection took place from June to August 2022 via an electronic form developed by the researchers on the Google Forms platform. Results A total of 37 individuals were analyzed, predominantly female (81.6%) with a mean age of 30.13 ± 4.52 and training time from 1 to 5 years (55.3%), 97.4% of whom were post-graduated with the weekly workload of 30 to 60 hours (71.1%), working on duty for 24 consecutive hours. The quality of life of the evaluated individuals showed unfavorable results (<70 points) in relation to the domains: general health status, social aspects, vitality, pain, and limitation by physical aspect. Regarding sleep quality, the domains that presented the worst indices were subjective sleep quality, sleep latency and habitual sleep efficiency. Conclusion The challenges in coping with the pandemic associated with excessive working hours were favorable factors in reducing the quality of life and sleep of physiotherapists working on the front line. Implications The development of this study made it possible to evaluate the effects of the pandemic on the mental health of professionals working on the front line, which may favor the development of actions aimed at the health of workers, considering that emotional disorders can last for a while, leading to the removal of work activities.

Objective alertness, rather than sleep duration, is associated with burnout and depression: A national survey of Japanese physicians

Abstract:Approximately 40% of Japanese physicians report working more than 960 hr of overtime annually, with 10% exceeding 1860 hr. To protect their health, annual overtime limits went into effect in 2024. The objective of this study was to investigate associations of self-reported sleep duration with psychological health and objective alertness. This was a cross-sectional National Survey for The Work Style Reform of Long Working Physicians. Physicians self-reported daily sleep duration, burnout (Abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory), depression (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) and traffic accidents. Alertness was then evaluated using the brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test. Of 20,382 physicians invited, 1226 completed the survey and brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test. Daily sleep duration was inversely associated with weekly work hours (β = -5.4; 95% confidence interval -6.8 to -4.0, p < 0.0001). Sleep duration < 6 hr and ≥ 8 hr per day was associated with slower responses on the brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test (adjusted p < 0.05). An additional 10 hr worked per week was associated with a 0.40 point (95% confidence interval 0.08-0.72) increase in burnout severity and a 1.7% (95% confidence interval 0.1-3.3%) increase in odds of reporting a traffic accident. Increased brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test lapses, indicating lower alertness, were associated with worse symptoms of depression (β = 0.23 points; 95% confidence interval 0.14-0.31, p < 0.0001) and burnout (β = 0.25 points; 95% confidence interval 0.13-0.36, p < 0.0001). This study emphasizes the importance of sufficient sleep to maintain alertness, and supports limiting work hours for Japanese physicians to protect psychological health. Performance on the brief Psychomotor Vigilance Test may be a useful indicator of psychological health.

Abstract:In this paper, a completely decentralized suboptimal control strategy for moderately coupled interconnected systems is presented. The interconnections in the system are assumed to be such that they do not destabilize the uncoupled system. The control is derived to optimize a finite horizon quadratic cost function locally. This local control is obtained in two portions; one for the subsystems and the other one for the interaction effects. The performance of the approach is also considered in an example.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The global COVID-19 pandemic has not only presented an unprecedented threat to physical health but has also cast a shadow over the mental well-being of individuals worldwide. Various sleep disturbance symptoms have been reported, including a sense of nonrestorative sleep and poor sleep quality. Promoting the mental health of community residents is critical in their lives. This study examined the relationship between sleep habits, activities of daily living, and mental health symptoms in young to middle-aged Japanese adults. Methods The participants were 76 adults not currently attending a psychiatric clinic. Participants kept a sleep diary for at least five days (including two days off), recorded daily activity using Fitbit Sense, and answered questionnaires regarding psychiatric symptoms and sleep. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-S (STAI-S), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Temperament and Character Inventory Harm Avoidance (HA) were used to assess psychiatric symptoms. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Hyperarousal Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) were used to assess subjective symptoms. Sleep diary records were averaged over five days and rated for bedtime, waking time, time in bed, sleep duration, sleep satisfaction, and sleepiness upon awakening. The study was approved by the Bioethics Review Committee of Nagoya University School of Medicine. Results Daily wakefulness, sleepiness, and subjective sleep efficiency were significantly related to psychiatric symptoms such as PHQ-9, STAI-S, BDI, and HA (Fatigability). Participants with a higher total HA score and HA (Fatigability) score had a significantly lower amount of active time in their daily lives, as recorded by Fitbit. Conclusion Daily rest and activity levels have an impact on mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japanese community residents. Support (if any)

Abstract:Objectives In response to the spread of COVID-19, a state of emergency was declared on April 7, 2020. People were asked to stay at home unless necessary, and studies conducted in Japan and other countries have investigated the impact of these restrictions on the lives and health of older adults. While some studies have focused on sleep, a crucial aspect of the health of older adults, little is known about the relationship between sleep and various lifestyle changes experienced by older adults in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Herein, we aimed to investigate the factors associated with changes in sleep duration among older adults before and after the spread of COVID-19.Methods A random sample of 1,808 men and women aged 65-84 years who lived in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan was selected. A self-administered anonymous survey was mailed to the participants. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with decreased sleep duration compared to the COVID-19 pre-pandemic. Factors such as basic attributes, lifestyle changes compared with that during pre-pandemic period, stress levels, and involvement with the community were considered in the analysis.Results Of the 1,808 distributed surveys, 1,305 were returned (response rate: 72.2%). After excluding participants with missing data (n＝108), 1,197 responses were included in the final analysis (valid response rate: 66.2%). Among these, 155 participants (12.9%) reported decreased sleep duration. Decreased "social activities/connectedness" (odds ratio [OR]: 2.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.54-4.22), reduced "average duration of exercise on exercise days" (OR: 2.69, 95% CI: 1.38-5.24), and self-reported "stress in the past month" (OR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.43-4.06) were significantly associated with decreased sleep duration.Conclusion The spread of COVID-19 was associated with decreased sleep duration among older adults. This decrease was linked to reduced social activity and participation, decreased exercise, and increased stress. To mitigate these effects, maintaining social participation and activities, scheduling regular and manageable exercise routines, and implementing effective stress management strategies while adhering to infection control practices are important.
Prevalence and Risk Factors of Insomnia and Sleep-aid Use in Emergency Physicians in Japan: Secondary Analysis of a Nationwide Survey

Abstract:Introduction: Emergency physicians (EP) are suspected to have a high prevalence of insomnia and sleep-aid use. Most prior studies about sleep-aid use in EPs have been limited by low response rates. In this study our aim was to investigate the prevalence of insomnia and sleep-aid use among early-career Japanese EPs and assess the factors associated with insomnia and sleep-aid use. Methods: We collected anonymous, voluntary, survey-based data regarding chronic insomnia and sleep-aid use from board-eligible EPs taking the initial Japanese Association of Acute Medicine board certification exam in 2019 and 2020. We describe the prevalence of insomnia and sleep-aid use and analyzed demographic and job related factors using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: The response rate was 89.71% (732 of 816). The prevalence of chronic insomnia and sleepaid use was 24.89% (95% CI 21.78-28.29%) and 23.77% (95% CI 20.69-27.15%), respectively. Factors associated with chronic insomnia were long working hours (odds ratio [OR] 1.02, 1.01-1.03, per onehour/ week), and “stress factor” (OR 1.46, 1.13-1.90). Factors associated with sleep-aid use were male gender (OR 1.71, 1.03-2.86), unmarried status (OR 2.38, 1.39-4.10), and “stress factor” (OR 1.48, 1.13-1.94). The “stress factor” was mostly influenced by stressors in dealing with patients/families and co-workers, concern about medical malpractice, and fatigue. Conclusions: Early-career EPs in Japan have a high prevalence of chronic insomnia and sleep-aid use. Long working hours and stress were associated with chronic insomnia, while male gender, unmarried status, and stress were associated with the use of sleep aids.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global pandemic, which is not only a severe public health issue but also significantly impacts the physical activity, sleep habits, and mental health of university students. Thus, we examined the association between behavioral restrictions due to COVID-19 and sleep patterns and mental health in first-year Japanese university students. Four hundred and twenty-two students (253 males and 169 females; age, 18.7 ± 1.0 years) participated in our questionnaire study. Under the behavioral restrictions due to COVID-19, 193 students (127 males and 66 females) responded to the questionnaire online from home. The participants did not visit the university during the survey period. The data acquired the year before the COVID-19 pandemic (2018 and 2019) were used as control data (126 males and 103 females). The questionnaire consisted of four sections: (1) demographic and lifestyle variables, (2) the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, (3) the Japanese version of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and (4) the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Our data revealed that self-restraint due to COVID-19 was associated with better sleep and mental health. In addition, mental health was independent of sleep, while sleep was related to mental health. These differences were more pronounced in male than in female students. This finding could be due to physical activity at night, part-time work, and long commuting times during the pre-pandemic period.
Sleep quality and related factors in a sample of Turkish healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Increasing workloads and psychological pressure have led to fatigue among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasing stress and social isolation can also lead to sleep problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate sleep quality and related factors among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. Methods: The data in this cross-sectional study were collected using an online questionnaire. This included sociodemographic data, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the National Stressful Events Survey PTSD Short Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results: Two hundred seventy-eight physicians, 104 nurses and 52 dentists were enrolled. The total prevalence of poor sleep quality was 56.7%. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 67.3% in nurses, 55.4% in physicians and 42.3% in dentists. Poor sleep quality was more prevalent among women, nurses, hospital workers, frontline workers, individuals with <5 years of work experience, those with low social support and individuals with increased traumatic stress levels. High levels of social support and family social support were identified as protective factors against poor sleep quality. Multivariate regression analyses showed that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with working in hospitals and high traumatic stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality was common among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Working in hospitals and high traumatic stress levels were identified as factors associated with poor sleep quality.
High Frequency Dielectric Relaxation in Polymers Filled With Ferroelectric Ceramics

Abstract:We investigated the dielectric relaxation process in high-dielectric constant polymer composite films filled with barium titanate particles. In order to extend the dielectric measurements to the microwave range, we employed a new broadband measurement technique where a thin film capacitance terminating a coaxial waveguide is treated as a transmission line. The complex permittivity, measured at frequencies of 100 Hz to 10 GHz for several films 50 μm to 100 μm thick with a dielectric constant of 3.2 to 30, was fitted to a dielectric model expressed as a superposition of Havriliak-Negami functions. An intrinsic high frequency relaxation process has been identified. It was found that the position of the loss peak depends primarily on the relaxation of the polymer matrix, while its magnitude is amplified by the volume fraction and permittivity of the ferroelectric component.
Prevalence and Demographic Correlates of Poor Sleep Quality Among Frontline Health Professionals in Liaoning Province, China During the COVID-19 Outbreak

Abstract:Background: Little empirical evidence is known about the sleep quality of frontline health professionals working in isolation units or hospitals during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in China. This study thus aimed to examine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its demographic and correlates among frontline health professionals.Methods: This is a multicenter, cross-sectional survey conducted in Liaoning province, China. Sleep quality was measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).Results: A total of 1,931 frontline health professionals were recruited. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 18.4% (95%CI: 16.6%–20.11%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that older age (OR=1.043, 95%CI=1.026–1.061, P < 0.001), being nurse (OR=3.132, 95%CI=1.727–5.681, P < 0.001), and working in outer emergency medical team (OR=1.755, 95%CI=1.029–3.064, P=0.039) were positively associated with poor sleep quality. Participants who were familiar with crisis response knowledge were negatively associated with poor sleep quality (OR=0.70, 95%CI=0.516–0.949, P=0.021).Conclusion: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was relatively low among frontline health professionals during the COVID-19 epidemic. Considering the negative impact of poor sleep quality on health professionals' health outcomes and patient outcomes, regularly screening and timely treatments are warranted to reduce the likelihood of poor sleep quality in health professionals.

Abstract:Background: Healthcare workers are at high risk of developing sleep disorders during an outbreak. This study aimed to measure severity of sleep difficulty and its correlation with duration of deal with suspected/confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in physicians. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 268 physicians from different medical settings were included during the COVID-19 outbreak. Results: The mean age and experience of physicians were 35.06 (33-70 years) and 10.13 years. The median duration of dealing with suspected/confirmed cases of COVID-19 was 1.0 (0-30 days). The mean sleep score and stress of physicians were 8.43 of 24.0 and 4.20 of 10, respectively. More than two-thirds of the physicians were sleepless (68.3%) and majority had stress (93.7%). The study did not find a significant difference in sleep score of physicians with different specialties (P = 0.059). However, most physicians were sleepless; including anesthesia and intensive care (77.8%); general physicians (80.8%), and obstetrics and gynecology (80.0%). They were sleepless in morning (58.7%); evening (77.8%); night (100%); and multi-shift (70.9%). The physicians who dealt with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 or with stress had more escalated sleep compared to those who did not deal with patients or without stress (9.39 vs. 7.17 and 8.78 vs. 2.69 P < 0.001). The sleep of physicians was escalated with increasing stress (r = 0.558; P < 0.001) and a number of days that physicians dealt with suspected/confirmed cases of COVID-19 (r = 0.210; P = 0.001), respectively. Conclusion: The study confirmed that working with COVID-19 patients has a negative effect on the sleep of physicians.
Sleep quality and mental health of medical workers during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to assess the sleep quality, mental health status, and associated factors among medical workers during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted and medical workers in Ningbo, China were recruited. Sleep quality was evaluated by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mental health status was evaluated by Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). Logistic regression and generalized multi-factor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) analysis were utilized to explore the risk factors and their interactions on sleep quality and mental health status. 207 participants were surveyed, and 34.30% were found with poor sleep quality (total PSQI score > 10), mainly manifested as sleep disturbance (92.75%). 27.05% were found with mental symptoms (Global severity index > 1.50), mainly manifested as obsessive–compulsive (25.60%). Multivariate logistic analysis showed that male (OR 3.89, 95% CI 1.06–14.24, P = 0.04), working years > 15 years (OR 4.51, 95% CI 1.56–13.00, P = 0.01), nurse (OR 5.64, 95% CI 1.35–23.63, P = 0.02), more night shifts (OR 3.10, 95% CI 1.31–7.34, P = 0.01), and supporting Wuhan (OR 3.41, 95% CI 1.12–10.40, P = 0.03) were associated with poor sleep quality. GMDR analysis showed that there was a two-factor interaction between working years and working shifts (P = 0.01). No significant factors and interactions were found associated with mental symptoms. In conclusions, about one-third of medical workers suffered from sleep and mental problems during the COVID-19 pandemic in the current study. Interventions for sleep and mental problems among medical workers were needed based on related factors.

Sleep during COVID-19 pandemic: Longitudinal observational study combining multisensor data with questionnaires

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic led to various containment strategies, such as work-from-home policies and reduced social contact, which significantly altered people's sleep patterns. Our study, conducted from June 2021 to June 2022, longitudinally examined the changes in the sleep patterns of working adults in Finland during this period, utilizing multisensor data from fitness trackers and monthly questionnaires. We conducted a comprehensive study, exploring the changes in sleep patterns in correlation with multiple factors such as individual demographics, occupation, sleep-related behaviors, levels of physical activity, restrictions imposed by the pandemic, and adjustments in seasonal variations. From over 27,000 nights analyzed from 112 participants, we found a correlation between stringent pandemic measures and increased total sleep time as well as delayed sleep timing. Academic staff experienced shorter and more variable sleep durations compared to service staff. Early-day physical activity was also linked to longer sleep duration, revealing the influence of lifestyle on sleep quality. Habitual snoozers exhibited higher variability in their sleep patterns. The findings reveal the multifaceted impacts of the pandemic and associated measures on sleep patterns, highlighting the nuanced variations among different occupations and habits, and emphasizing the role of flexible work-life routines and external factors in shaping sleep behaviors during such unprecedented times.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to evaluate the situation of sleep quality among Chinese medical staff during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality among medical staff from 8 May 2020 to 22 May 2020 in People's Republic of China. A total of 101 (25%) participants were poor sleepers, while 303 (75%) were good sleepers, as defined by PSQI. The PSQI scores were higher in high age, married, master/doctor, nurse, and frequent night shifts groups when compared with those in middle and low age, unmarried and divorced/widowed, bachelor or below, clinician and other job, low frequency night shifts, respectively (all p < 0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that higher PSQI score was positively associated with higher educational background, age, and more frequent night shifts (all p < 0.001). Sleep quality of medical staff should be improved, especially for high age, married, master/doctor, nurse, and frequent night shifts groups.

Abstract:Study objectives: This study estimated the prevalence, examined associated impacts, and identified correlated factors of poor sleep quality among Japanese white-collar employees who were working in a labor market that included extensive downsizing and restructuring. Design: A cross-sectional self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted as part of 2 consecutive studies on sleep. Sleep quality was measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Setting: A telecommunications company in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Participants: Of 5,924 workers, 5,090 responded (85.9%). Results from 4,868 daytime employees were analyzed. Interventions: N/A. Measurements and results: The 1-month point prevalence of poor sleep quality was approximately 30% to 45% across age and gender and was significantly higher than in the general population of Japanese adults. The overall prevalence of absenteeism, poor physical and psychological health, problems in work performance and personal relationships, and accidents were 16.5%, 18.3%, 17.3%, 2.5%, 2.1%, and 1.8%, respectively. Poor sleepers were more likely to take sick leave, suffer from poor physical and psychological health, and have problems in occupational activities and personal relationships. The most strongly associated factor underlying poor sleep quality was perceived stress, followed by job dissatisfaction, being unmarried, poor bedroom environment, lower academic attainment, younger age, and hypertension. Conclusions: This study suggests that the cost related to poor sleep quality is extremely high. Comprehensive countermeasures against poor sleep quality at not only the individual, but also the organizational and societal levels, need to be considered for both employees and employers in order that health, safety, and productivity are ensured.

Abstract:Sleep timing is an important output of the circadian system. The COVID-19-mandated social restrictions significantly altered commuting time and sleep duration regionally in Japan. This study aimed to elucidate sleep patterns, especially chronotype and social jetlag (SJL), due to changes in social time pressure through the social restrictions between the Metropolitan and Regional areas in Japan. As part of the Global Chrono Corona Survey 2020 (GCCS), the data were collected during social restrictions (SR), but pre-COVID-19 behaviours were also queried retrospectively. We analyzed a cohort of 729 respondents representing both the Metropolitan and the Regional areas separately for workdays and work-free days. While the areas showed no difference in SJL before SR, the differential decrease was larger in the Metropolitan area during SR, resulting in a significant difference in SJL between the areas. The outdoor light exposure before SR was 30 min longer in the Metropolitan areas than in the Regional; during SR both areas showed similarly low (below 1 h) outdoor light exposures. The variables associated with decreased SJL were the Metropolitan areas, work-from-home, a no-usage alarm clock on workdays, and chronotypes (mid-sleep time on free days corrected for sleep deficit accumulated over the workweek, MSFsc) during SR. The results suggest that relaxed social schedules, as reflected in the increased frequency of work-from-home and reduced alarm clock use, and moving towards earlier MSFsc during SR were linked to decreased SJL and were more prominent in the Metropolitan areas. This study provides insights into sleep patterns and the social time pressure markers, by comparison between residential groups in Japan.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3>Sleep disorders may exacerbate many physical and mental health conditions, causing difficulty function in a healthcare setting. Workers screening for the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infection have a high risk of not only occupational exposure to the virus but also sleep disorders. However, the job-related factors associated with reduced sleep quality remain unclear.<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3>All healthcare workers temporarily scheduled to screen the 2019-nCoV patients were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire that included questions on demographics, job-related factors, and sleep quality as assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Sleep quality was assessed over a 1-month follow-up period.<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3>A total of 116 doctors and 99 nurses were recruited for this study. The total scheduled work time was 14.78 ± 6.69 days during follow-up. Some job-related factors, such as number of work days, years of work experience, and subjective psychological stress, were associated with changes in the PSQI score. During the study, some workers tried out cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for sleep disorders using methods that were available online and easily accessible. Adopting online CBT was shown to be associated with scores of components of sleep quality, sleep latency, and sleep disturbance (β = -0.152, P = 0.01; β = -0.175, P = 0.008; and β = -0.158, P = 0.011, respectively).<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3>Healthcare workers involved in screening for 2019-nCoV experienced reduced sleep quality, and a reasonable work schedule may help with maintaining sleep quality. In addition, interventions for healthcare workers should target self-help sleep assistance.

Abstract:Background: A number of studies have documented that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) brought more negative impact on the physical and psychological functioning of frontline healthcare workers. Especially, sleep quality was focused. This study aimed to investigate the sleep quality of frontline healthcare workers, risk factors for sleep quality, and the effect of Tai Chi training. Methods: A total of 98 frontline healthcare workers were recruited, coming from the infection department, fever clinic, laboratory, and medical imaging department in a COVID-19-designated hospital in Shanghai. Of them, 50 participated in a 2-week intervention and were randomized to receive a Tai Chi training or relaxation training. Participants were assessed at baseline, 7 and 14 days after participation. Demographic information, sleep quality, and anxiety were measured by using the demographic questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Results: 13.3% participants were above the cut-off score (>10) for the PSQI. Regression analysis showed gender, age, working years, and job category had effect on sleep quality. Compared to the control group, participants in the Tai Chi training group had lower scores on both PSQI ( p < 0.05) and BAI ( p < 0.01) after the 2-week intervention. Conclusion: It was demonstrated that poor sleep quality existed in the frontline healthcare workers, which was related to gender, age, working years, and job category. Tai Chi training can dramatically improve their sleep quality and reduce anxiety symptoms.
