Abstract:A facile strategy is proposed to anchor single‐atom nanozyme‐like lanthanum moieties on graphene nanocages, showing significantly enhanced dielectric loss performance due to unique five‐coordinated configurations. The nanocages‐based multifunctional film is fabricated and has outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption performance, outperforming most reported carbon‐based films. This work provides crucial insights into the spatially coordinated environment of metal single‐atom on the dielectric property. Single‐atom (SA) nanozymes have unprecedented physicochemical performance due to their integrated merits of both atomically dispersed metal atoms and bio‐enzymes. However, the structure‐function relationship between the SA nanozyme‐like structure and its dielectric performance is still unclear. Furthermore, controllable synthesis of SA nanozyme‐like structures remains challenging due to their unique five‐coordinated configurations. Here, a dicyandiamide‐mediated pyrolysis strategy is proposed to anchor five nitrogen‐coordinated lanthanum (La)–N5 moieties on interconnected N‐doped graphene nanocages (La‐N5/ING). Theoretical predictions indicate that the spatially coordinated La–N5 moieties exhibit significantly enhanced conduction loss and polarization loss compared to La–N4 moieties, as evidenced by the experimental results. Moreover, the polydimethylsiloxane‐coated chemically cross‐linked film constructed by the La‐N5/ING and aramid nanofibers has outstanding electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB10) of 6.24 GHz at a thickness of merely 2.0 mm, outperforming those of most reported carbon‐based films. Importantly, the film also has excellent flexibility, hydrophobicity, mechanical strength, and structural stability, ensuring its application potential in practical environments. These findings provide crucial insights into the microscopic environment of SA on the dielectric properties of their host materials, and a critical method for the preparation of multifunctional films with spatial coordinated SA.

Abstract:Lightweight, low-cost electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption materials are in urgent need, as EM interference pollution is increasingly serious. Carbon material as EM absorber has attracted ever increasing attention. However, their absorption property is still limited. Herein, we propose a very simple strategy to prepare hierarchical carbon fiber coated with Co/C nano-dodecahedron particles where CNTs were anchored (HCF@CZ-CNTs), using cotton and metal-organic-framework (MOF) as raw materials. One of MOF, ZIF-67 particles were in-situ grown onto the surface of cotton fibers. Lightweight HCF@CZ-CNTs samples were obtained by direct carbonization, the apparent density of which is only 0.0198 g/cm(3). The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of hierarchical HCF@CZ-CNTs was dramatically enhanced to -53.5 dB at 7.8 GHz, compared with pure carbonized cotton fiber (RLmin = -18.9 dB at 16 GHz). Meanwhile the effectively absorption bandwidth was also remarkably enlarged to 8.02 GHz. The excellent EM wave absorption performance is attributed to the micro-to-nano hierarchical hollow fibrous structure, as well as the synergetic effect of polarization relaxation and magnetic loss. These results illuminate a low-cost and sustainable strategy to prepare ultra-lightweight microwave absorbers with excellent EM wave absorbing ability utilizing biomass precursor and MOF. Abstract:It is highly desirable, but challenging to develop multi-functional electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing material for practical applications in some special environments. Herein, we successfully fabricated cobalt-nanoparticle-embedded N-doped carbon nanotube arrays on the carbonized cotton fiber cloth as multifunctional material with an excellent EMW absorption, flexibility, hydrophobicity, and electric-thermal performance. The excellent multifunction benefits from high conductivity, large specific surface area, abundant N dopants, and three-dimensional open porous features. Minimal reflection loss and efficient absorption bandwidth of the optimized material as EMW absorbers can reach − 57.8 dB and 4.5 GHz, respectively, which are better than most reported carbon-based absorbers. Meanwhile, theoretical simulations of the radar cross-sectional (RCS) further confirm that the multifunctional material has excellent EMW attenuation performance and potential in practical application. Moreover, the materials possess strong hydrophobicity and high electrical conductivity, endowing them with other attractive functions of self-cleaning and good electric thermal performance, which expand the potential applications range of EMW absorption materials. Our present method can be extended to design next-generation EMW absorbing materials with multifunctionalities for practical applications in harsh environments.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have diverse structures and compositions, inspiring the boundless enthusiasm and creativity of researchers in the field of electromagnetism. The synthesis of MOF-derived nanomaterials for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption with ultrathin matching thickness (below 1.6 mm) is highly desired and challenging. Here, we demonstrate a general synthesis strategy for metal (Co, Ni, Fe)-based MOFs, which transformed into metal/metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs) of being coated by nitrogen (N)-doped graphitized carbon. The obtained carbon-coated NPs show excellent EMW absorption properties. Specifically, Co-based MOFs are pyrolyzed into rhombic dodecahedrons with numerous ultrasmall Co NPs coated by N-doped carbon (Co-NC core–shell NPs). The synthesized Co-NC core–shell NPs possess a unique porous structure, abundant defects, and doped N heteroatoms, resulting in good magnetic loss (eddy current loss), dielectric loss (multiple reflections, interfacial polarization, conduction loss), and impedance matching. Therefore, the Co-NC core–shell NPs exhibit an excellent EMW absorption property with a very strong reflection loss of −56.5 dB at a matching thickness of only 1.58 mm. The effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 4.4 GHz. In addition, the EAB between 1 and 5 mm in thickness is up to 13.2 GHz, which already includes all C bands and X bands, even the absolute S bands and Ku bands. This work provides an avenue to design high-performance EMW absorption devices based on MOF-derived nanomaterials.

Abstract:The widespread application of high-frequency electronic and communication devices has caused increasingly severe electromagnetic pollution. It is highly desirable but challenging to develop ultralight electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers with strong absorption performance to eliminate the negative effects of electromagnetic pollution. Herein, a secondary ion adsorption and defect-anchoring strategy was proposed to construct ultralight N-doped graphene aerogels containing isolated single cobalt atoms (Co-SAs/GAs) with a tunable content of Co-SAs from 1.13 to 2.58 wt. %. The optimal Co-SAs/GAs with a matching thickness of 1.5 mm and an ultralow filler ratio of 5 wt. % attenuated about 99.999% electromagnetic energy and exhibited specific EMW absorption performance (SMAP) of 37 220 dB cm2 g−1, which was 15 000 dB cm2 g−1 higher than that of the best reported absorber in literature. Permittivity and electrical conductivity measurements indicated that the introduction of Co-SAs significantly increased the conduction and polarization losses of the GAs, which was confirmed by simulation results based on the Havriliak–Negami equation. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the Co–N4 moiety exhibited obvious polarization behavior, which could be further tuned by defective sites in its vicinity. This comprehensive investigation of the relationships between single-atom structure and electromagnetic wave absorption property provides an efficient route toward the rational design of ultralight absorbers with metal single-atoms.

Abstract:Regulating the composition and microstructure of nanomaterials is a major challenge in the development of high-performance materials for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. This paper introduces a new lightweight EMW-absorbing material Co@N/C with a yolk–shell structure and compositions of ferromagnetic metal and carbon materials. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of the as-designed Co@N/C nanospheres with a filler loading of 25 wt% reaches −67.68 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth of a 1.9 mm thickness is 5.3 GHz. The exceptional absorption performance of the EMW absorption is primarily achieved through the synergistic effect between the Co–carbonaceous material and the yolk–shell structure, which optimizes the impedance matching. The polarization loss, conductivity loss, magnetic loss, and multiple scattering mainly contribute to the excellent EMW-absorption ability of the materials. The proposed method for regulating the structure and morphology of Co@N/C can efficiently construct high-performance EMW absorbers.

Abstract:In this work, N-doped carbon fibers-Co 3 O 4 (NCFs-Co 3 O 4 ) composites are obtained through electrospinning, carbonization and oxidation processes. When the carbonization temperature is 800 °C, NCFs-Co 3 O 4 -800 shows efficient electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties. The maximum reflection loss (RL) reaches −57.6 dB at 9.04 GHz with a thickness of 3.9 mm. When the thickness is 3.0 mm, the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaches 6.64 GHz. The excellent performance is attributed to the abundant dielectric loss and magnetic loss effects, as well as good impedance matching. The results have positive significance for the research of carbon fiber-based composite absorbers.

Abstract:Exploring carbon materials is promising for innovative electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials, nevertheless challenged by balancing efficient EMW absorption and continuous large-scale fabrication. In this work, CNTs/CNFs@CF with inimitable 3D network hierarchical structures are fabricated as EMW absorbers via the chemical vapor deposition method. Through detailed characterization of its morphology, structure, composition, and magnetic properties, the material obtained optimal electromagnetism parameters and showed exceptional EMW absorption performance. Herein, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) was −66.00 dB at 1.00 mm and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 4.48 GHz was obtained at 1.29 mm. In addition, good mechanical properties with a single-filament tensile strength of 4.99 GPa were achieved, thereby expanding the range of applications. Undoubtedly, CNTs/CNFs@CF realizes the synergy of multiple synergistic loss mechanisms and impedance matching for EMW absorption. In summary, this implies a good prospect for the continuous large-scale preparation of ultrathin and efficient EMW absorbers.

Abstract:Developing carbon encapsulated magnetic composites with rational design of microstructure for achieving high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption in a facile, sustainable, and energy-efficiency approach is highly demanded yet remains challenging. Here, a type of N-doped carbon nanotube (CNT) encapsulated CoNi alloy nanocomposites with diverse heterostructures are synthesized via the facile, sustainable autocatalytic pyrolysis of porous CoNi-layered double hydroxide/melamine. Specifically, the formation mechanism of the encapsulated structure and the effects of heterogenous microstructure and composition on the EMW absorption performance are ascertained. With the presence of melamine, CoNi alloy emerges its autocatalysis effect to generate N-doped CNTs, leading to unique heterostructure and high oxidation stability. The abundant heterogeneous interfaces induce strong interfacial polarization to EMWs and optimize impedance matching characteristic. Combined with the inherent high conductive and magnetic loss capabilities, the nanocomposites accomplish a high-efficiency EMW absorption performance even at a low filling ratio. The minimum reflection loss of -84.0 dB at the thickness of 3.2 mm and a maximum effective bandwidth of 4.3 GHz are obtained, comparable to the best EMW absorbers. Integrated with the facile, controllable, and sustainable preparation approach of the heterogenous nanocomposites, the work shows a great promise of the nanocarbon encapsulation protocol for achieving lightweight, high-performance EMW absorption materials.

Abstract:In applications such as aerospace, automotive, and mobile devices, reduction of weight is crucial for enhancing the performance, minimizing the energy expenditure, and extending the operational lifespan. Lightweight electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials offer a viable solution to achieve these objectives without compromising the absorption efficiency. Additionally, the cost-effective production of these materials facilitates large-scale manufacturing, thereby broadening the application scope of electromagnetic wave absorption technology. In this study, an ultralight hierarchical biomass-derived porous carbon (BPC)/Co/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite was prepared highly efficiently by employing a microwave plasma-assisted reduced chemical vapor deposition technique. Taking advantage of the renewable wood, the BPC served as the matrix, in which CNTs with magnetic Co nanoparticles were grown on the surface of the BPC. The hierarchical structure with zero-dimensional Co nanocrystals, one-dimensional CNTs, and three-dimensional BPC matrix could fertilize the loss mechanism availably, which was rationally endowed with enhanced electromagnetic wave dissipation capacity under a low loading content. Consequently, the composite demonstrated a remarkable minimum reflection loss of -78.7 dB at a thin matching thickness of 1.9 mm despite having a filler content as minimal as 10 wt %. Furthermore, the radar cross-section could be significantly reduced to 21.5 dB m(2) when the detection angle was fixed at 20 degrees. This work offers insights into designing and fabricating next-generation ultralight electromagnetic wave absorbers through a cost-effective, ecofriendly, and efficient approach.
Flexible Film Constructed by Asymmetrically‐Coordinated La 1 N 4 Cl 1 Moieties on Interconnected Nitrogen‐Doped Graphene Nanocages for High‐Efficiency Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Abstract:Abstract The microenvironments of metal single‐atoms (SAs) have important effects on their physicochemical properties. However, the understanding of the relationship between the coordination configuration of SAs and their properties is insufficient. Here, a sacrificing template strategy is developed to anchor La‐SAs on interconnected graphene nanocages (La‐N‐Cl/GNC), where La‐SAs are located above the graphene plane and one La atom coordinated with four N atoms in the graphene plane and with one Cl atom along the axial direction. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that asymmetrically La‐SAs are more conducive to breaking local charge symmetry. Consequently, additional electrical dipoles along the axial direction are generated, leading to unprecedented dipolar polarization loss and strong electromagnetic wave absorption properties. Moreover, the film constructed by asymmetrically‐coordinated La‐N‐Cl/GNC with a mass density of 0.084 g cm −3 exhibits superior flexibility, excellent mechanical strength, and moderate thermal insulation properties, guaranteeing its practical applications in harsh environments. These findings not only shed light on the relationships between asymmetrically coordinated SAs and their dielectric properties at the atomic level but also provide an efficient method for preparing multifunctional films.

Abstract:Light-weight and low-cost electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption materials are in urgent need, as EM and radiation interference pollution is increasingly serious. Carbon materials as EM absorbers have attracted ever increasing attention, because of their high electrical conductivity, large specific surface area and low density. However, their absorption property is still limited. Herein, we propose a very simple strategy to prepare hierarchical carbon fiber coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and NiCo/C flower-like particles (NiCo@NPC@CF), using cotton and metal-organic framework (MOF) as precursors. The minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of hierarchical NiCo@NPC@CF is dramatically enhanced to −46.5 dB with a wide effectively absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 15.3 GHz. The excellent EM wave absorption performance is attributed to the micro-to-nano hierarchical hollow fibrous structure, as well as the synergetic effect of dielectric loss and magnetic loss. Therefore, this work provides a green, low-cost and sustainable strategy to prepare excellent microwave absorbers utilizing biomass and MOF precursor.
Hierarchical HCF@NC/Co Derived from Hollow Loofah Fiber Anchored with Metal–Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Hierarchical electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials with a dielectric-magnetic dual-loss mechanism are promising candidates for highly efficient EMW attenuation. Herein, hierarchical dielectric-magnetic composite hollow carbon fiber@nitrogen-doped carbon/Co (HCF@NC/Co) was successfully synthesized via in situ growth of two-dimensional (2D) Co metal-organic framework (MOF) (ZIF-67) nanosheets on the surface of hollow loofah fiber (HLF), followed by a calcination process, where the aggregation of carbonized MOFs was effectively avoided to construct a homogeneous hierarchical one-dimensional structure. Based on the advantages of the carbon/Co dielectric-magnetic dual-loss mechanism that results in good impedance matching and multiple polarization loss arising from the extensive heterointerfaces (e.g., HCF-NC/Co, air-carbon, nitrogen-carbon, and Co-carbon interfaces), dipole active sites (e.g., doped N, Co particle, and crystalline defects in graphitic carbon), and hierarchical porous structures, optimal EMW absorption performance of HCF@NC/Co is achieved through regulating the calcination temperature and filler content, where the HCF@NC/Co calcinated at 700 °C exhibits a minimum reflection loss (RL<sub>min</sub>) value of -50.14 dB with only 14% filler loading and 2.25 mm thickness, and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB<sub>max</sub>) also reaches 7.36 GHz. Meanwhile, adjustable EAB can also be achieved by optimizing the sample thickness, making it applicable in a wider frequency region. It is expected that our prepared HCF@NC/Co might shed light on designing lightweight and highly efficient EMW MOF-derived EMW absorbing materials.

Abstract:Rapid development of wearable electronics stim-ulates the emergence of flexible electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials with strong attenuation and wide bandwidth during deformation. Conventional EM wave absorbing materials are usually in the form of powders which are challenging to achieve satisfactory adhesion and/or dispersion in soft matrices. Here, uniform Fe3Co7 nanoparticles with large permeability have been electroless plated on a mixed cellulose membrane (MCM). The cross-linked cellulose endows the absorber with excellent flexibility and provides substantial heterogeneous nucleation sites for the Fe3Co7 nanoparticles in the formation of interconnected EM nanofilms, which give rise to enhanced polarization relaxation, conductive loss, eddy current effect, and ferromagnetic resonance. Optimal EM absorption with minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -35.9 dB and ultrawide effective absorption bandwidth of 9.8 GHz has been achieved at a small thickness of 2.0 mm. Benefiting from the well-dispersed nanoparticles and stable adhesion onto the flexible substrate, the deformative Fe3Co7@MCM maintains effective absorption capacity during bending and compressing. This work not only clarifies synergistic attenuation mechanisms of flexible Fe3Co7@MCM in the natural and deformative states but also provides versatile strategy to construct flexible EM devices for extendable applications in catalysis, energy, and sensing.

Conventional EM wave absorbing materials are usually in the form of powders which are challenging to achieve satisfactory adhesion and/or dispersion in soft matrices. Here, uniform Fe3Co7 nanoparticles with large permeability have been electroless plated on a mixed cellulose membrane (MCM). The cross-linked cellulose endows the absorber with excellent flexibility and provides substantial heterogeneous nucleation sites for the Fe3Co7 nanoparticles in the formation of interconnected EM nanofilms, which give rise to enhanced polarization relaxation, conductive loss, eddy current effect, and ferromagnetic resonance. Optimal EM absorption with minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −35.9 dB and ultrawide effective absorption bandwidth of 9.8 GHz has been achieved at a small thickness of 2.0 mm. Benefiting from the well-dispersed nanoparticles and stable adhesion onto the flexible substrate, the deformative Fe3Co7@MCM maintains effective absorption capacity during bending and compressing. This work not only clarifies synergistic attenuation mechanisms of flexible Fe3Co7@MCM in the natural and deformative states but also provides versatile strategy to construct flexible EM devices for extendable applications in catalysis, energy, and sensing.

Abstract:2D/quasi-2D nanomaterial (e.g., graphene, MXene, carbon nanosheet) based composites are efficient absorbers of the ever-growing pollution of electromagnetic wave (EMW) due to their large aspect ratios, ample functional groups, and tunable electric and magnetic properties. However, the nanocomposites' cost-effective and straightforward synthesis process is still elusive. Thus, we demonstrated a simple swelling and carbonization process of exfoliated cellulose fibril to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets with homogeneously embedded Co nanoparticles (Co/NCN). Co/NCN with a carbonization temperature of 800 °C exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −65.7 dB at 13.9 GHz and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.8 GHz with RL < -10 dB at a thickness of 1.7 mm. In addition, the microwave absorption characteristics of the composite can be further adjusted by the carbonization temperature. Those values are superior to many nanocomposites based on graphene and MXene. The doped nitrogen heteroatoms were essential for maintaining the morphology of carbon nanosheets, increasing the interfacial polarization loss, and improving the impedance matching. The environment-friendly and low-cost process proposed here can be extended to synthesizing many other metal/NCN nanocomposites as high-performance EMW absorbers.

Abstract:Deterministic fabrication of highly thermally conductive composite film with satisfying low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) absorption performance exhibits great potential in advancing the application of 5G smart electric devices but persists challenge. Herein, a multifunctional flexible film combined with hetero-structured Fe6W6C-FeWO4@C (FWC-O@C) as the absorber and aramid nanofibers (ANFs) as the matrix was prepared. Driven by an atomic gradient infusion reduction strategy, the carbon atoms of absorbers can be precisely relocated from carbon shell to core oxometallate lattice and trigger in-situ carbothermic reduction for customizing unique oxometallate-carbide heterojunctions and deforming the surface geometrical structure. Such an atoms reconstruction process effectively regulates interface electronic structure and magnetic configuration, resulting in enhanced polarization loss from abundant heterointerfaces and crystal defects and magnetic loss from hierarchical structure endowed magnetic coupling interaction, which jointly contributes to the efficient low-frequency EM absorption performance. Eventually, optimized FWC-O@C microplate exhibits a broad absorption bandwidth surpassed the entire C band, and the assembled Fe6W6C-FeWO4@C/ANF composite film also performs a high thermal conductivity over 2500% higher than that of the pure ANF. These findings provide a new insight into the atomic reconstruction affected EM properties and a generalized methodological guidance for preparing multifunctional thermally conductive composite films.

Abstract:Lots of work has been done to develop microwave absorbing materials (MAM) utilized as flexible electronic devices and communication instruments. Conventionally developed powder MAM are often limited in practical applications because of the bad stability and poor durability, which is out of the scope for exploiting flexible and long-term microwave absorbers. To overcome such limitations, a facile and binder-free technique from a Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67, a member of metal organic frameworks)-coated carbon fiber precursor is developed for the in situ horizontal growth of Co3O4 nanoparticles, which embedded nitrogen-doped carbon array (triangular nanoplates) on the surface of carbon fibers in the carbon paper (NC-Co3O4/CP) as low-thickness MAM. The maximum reflection loss (RL) values reaches -16.12 and -34.34 dB when the thickness is 1.1 and 1.5 mm, respectively. As the thickness increases, the absorbing performance at low frequency performs well (RL < -20 dB). The hierarchical architecture is facilely originated from a metal-organic framework precursor. In view of the simple preparation technique, NC-Co3O4/CP exhibit huge potential in large-scale production of portable microwave absorbing electronic devices with strong microwave response at low thickness.

Abstract:High-performance electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption property could be achieved by architecture design of nanomaterials. Herein, two layer hybrid Co0.2Fe2.8O4/carbon nanofibers with porous three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structure were synthesized successfully through facile electrospinning, carbonization and mild chemical treatment. The Co0.2Fe2.8O4 particles grew along the carbon nanofibers, forming the enhanced heterogeneous interfaces and high specific areas. As expected, the EM wave absorbent showed an excellent absorbing capability. The composites achieved a maximum reflection loss (RL) of −43.45 dB at 11.1 GHz with thickness of 3.0 mm. More importantly, the effective bandwidth (RL ≤ −10dB) was 5.85 GHz, covering 30% of the entire measured bandwidth. The absorption intensity and bandwidth were superior to other typical CoFe-based composites. The intrinsic mechanism of the absorption revealed that the polarization losses, magnetic losses, magnetic natural resonance and exchanged resonance losses contributed to the high-performance microwave absorption. Moreover, good impedance matching and complex transmission paths that generated from unique porous network also played an important role. This study is expected to guide future exploration on designing and synthesizing high performance EM wave absorbents.
