Abstract:To investigate the fluorescein angiography (FA) findings and compare the extent of retinal vascularization in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), recovered after intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) monotherapy and those regressed spontaneously. Infants with a history of ROP who underwent FA between April 2018 and November 2021 were retrospectively included. The patients were divided into two groups based on whether they had received IVR (IVR group) or had ROP that regressed spontaneously without treatment (untreated group). The differences between the two groups in zone II ROP were also compared, to equalize the subgroups as much as possible in terms of disease severity. FA findings were recorded. The extent of vascularization was measured by the ratio of the distance from the center of the disk to the border of the vascularized zone (DB) and the distance from the center of the disk to the center of the fovea (DF). The width of the persistent avascular retina (PAR) was counted by disc diameters (DD). One hundred and ten eyes of 55 infants were included in the IVR group and 76 eyes of 38 babies in the untreated group. The ratio of abnormal shape of vessels was significantly higher in the IVR group than in the untreated group (50.9% vs. 35.5%; P = 0.038), while the linear choroidal filling pattern, tortuosity of vessels over the posterior pole, dye leakage, anomalous branching of vessels, circumferential vessels, arteriovenous shunt, abnormal capillary bed, and macular abnormalities were similarly. There was a smaller temporal DB/DF ratio (4.48 vs. 4.63; P = 0.003) and greater PAR (2.63 vs. 1.76; P < 0.001) in the IVR group compared to the untreated group. In zone II ROP, the progression of retinal vascularization was significantly larger in the IVR group than that in the untreated group ( P = 0.003), while no statistical differences were observed in FA features, the DB/DF ratio, and PAR between the two subgroups. The residual vascular abnormalities and PAR may be common results of ROP regression. The DB/DF ratio of 4.0 temporally and 3.3 nasally could be used as the preliminary indicators for safe retinal vascularization in the completion of ROP regression.
Clinical Risk Factors for Retinopathy of Prematurity Reactivation after Intravitreal Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Injection

Abstract:Objective To assess the rate and risk factors for reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) after intravitreal injection (IVI) of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents. Study design Infants who received IVI therapy between 2017 and 2022 were enrolled and divided into two groups: those with and without ROP reactivation. Information on ROP variables and patient variables were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Results A total of 114 infants with 223 eyes were enrolled in the study. The ROP reactivation rate was 11.4% of infants (9.9% of eyes). The mean duration of reactivation was 84 ± 45 days. Among the 223 eyes treated with IVI, reactivation rates were 6% for bevacizumab, 13.9% for aflibercept, and 22.2% for ranibizumab. A multivariable regression model showed that ranibizumab was an independent risk factor (OR: 11.4, p =0.008) for reactivation. Other risk factors included infants with periventricular leukomalacia (OR: 13.8, p =0.003), patent ductus arteriosus ligation (OR: 10.7, p =0.032), and infants who still required invasive mechanical ventilation on the day of IVI therapy (OR: 7.0, p =0.018). Conclusions All anti-VEGF agents carry a risk of ROP reactivation, with the risk being higher with ranibizumab 0.25 mg than with bevacizumab 0.625 mg. Reactivation of ROP should be assessed vigilantly, especially in those infants with increased risks. Future research to determine the optimal anti-VEGF selection and dosage in high-risk infants is warranted.

Abstract:AIM:To explore the process of retinal vascularization and risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treated with intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) as monotherapy.METHODS:Infants with type 1 ROP who received IVR as primary treatment from August 2014 to October 2016 at Peking University People's Hospital's Ophthalmology Department were included in the study. All eyes received 0.25 mg ranibizumab at initial treatment. Retinal vascularization was evaluated clinically. Potential risk factors were also recorded and examined.RESULTS:Retinal vascularization was completed in 126 eyes (62.7%), and retinal vascularization terminated in zone II and zone III with 16 eyes (7.9%) and 44 eyes (21.9%), respectively, after more than 1-year follow-up. In multivariate regression analysis, lower birth weight (BW), severity of ROP and repeated injections were found to be risk factors for peripheral avascular area (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:In our retrospective study, 29.8% of the ROP eyes treated with ranibizumab have peripheral avascular area at the last follow-up. Lighter BW and the severity of ROP are risk factors. Furthermore, repeated injections also increase the risk of retinal peripheral avascular area remaining in ROP patients.
Refractive Error Outcomes after Intravitreal Ranibizumab for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Abstract:Background To evaluate the refractive outcomes in children treated with intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR) for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods A retrospective study of 95 patients (186 eyes) was conducted. All patients received IVR treatment. The cycloplegic refraction was evaluated at three months, six months, 12 months and 24 months. Result The average spherical equivalent (SE) refraction value for patients with ROP who were treated with IVR as a monotherapy at the three, six, 12 and 24 months was +1.84 +/- 2.11 D, +1.02 +/- 2.41 D, +0.43 +/- 2.23 D and +0.13 +/- 2.73 D, respectively (p < 0.001). Myopia (SE < -0.25 D) was observed in 24 eyes (15.9 per cent) at the three-month follow-up, 33 eyes (21.8 per cent) at the six-month follow-up, 33 eyes (26.5 per cent) at the 12-month follow-up and 34 eyes (37.5 per cent) at the 24-month follow-up, respectively (p < 0.05). The percentage of eyes with high myopia (SE < -5.0 D) was 0.6 per cent, 1.4 per cent, 1.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent at the three-month, six-month, 12-month and 24-month follow-up visits in the IVR group. There were 59 eyes that received repeated IVR injections at the follow-ups. The average SE of patients receiving repeated injections at the three-, six-, 12- and 24-month visits was +1.53 +/- 2.03 D, +1.25 +/- 1.95 D, +0.58 +/- 2.24 D and -0.17 +/- 3.22 D, respectively (p = 0.04). Conclusion Our large sample study found that 37.5 per cent and 3.4 per cent of patients treated with IVR developed myopia and high myopia respectively, at the 24-month follow-up. Furthermore, the mean SE decreased, and the trend of myopia increased, in the IVR group at the follow-ups. Repeated injections might promote myopia in ROP patients. The refractive status needs to be monitored in patients treated with ranibizumab.

Abstract:Purpose To observe the vascular development results of tertiary anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy following spontaneous second reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods This retrospective study included 22 infants (42 eyes) with Type 1 or aggressive ROP (A-ROP) who received three anti-VEGF drug treatments for ROP from January 2018 to December 2022. The vascular growth, possible associated risk factors, and the retinal vascularization (DB/DF ratio) were assessed. Results The mean follow-up was 17.6 months. After the 3 rd intravitreal injection, seven eyes showed complete vascularization (Group 1), while the remaining 35 eyes demonstrated persistent avascular retina (PAR) (Group 2). In Group 2, 17 eyes maintained a stable state and were classified in the regression subgroup. The other 18 eyes developed a 3 rd reactivation (reactivation subgroup) and were treated with laser photocoagulation (LPC). Birth weight (BW) was significantly lower in Group 2 than in Group 1 ( p < 0.001). The decision tree analysis shows that only infants weighing more than 1,250 g (17.50%) had a chance to achieve complete retinal vascularization. The possibility of PAR was higher in patients with BW <1,250 g than ≥1,250 g (70.00% vs. 12.50%). In addition, most infants with BW ≥ 1,290 g and initial ROP disease in Zone I or posterior Zone II developed PAR. Conclusion Tertiary IVR can successfully treat a second ROP reactivation and improve peripheral retinal vascularization. BW is the most significant factor related to complete retinal vascularization. Our decision tree model may be helpful in predicting the prognosis of anti-VEGF drugs in the event of a second ROP reactivation.

Fibrovascular Proliferation of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Zone II after Initial Ranibizumab Treatment

Abstract:This study was designed to explore the prevalence of fibrovascular proliferation not regressed in zone II stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) after initial intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) injections and to explore the possible influence factors. Fifty-seven patients (108 eyes) with ROP who underwent intravitreal injection of ranibizumab between January 2013 and July 2014 participated in the retrospective study. Based on regress of fibrovascular tissue or not after initial injections of ranibizumab, eligible eyes were divided into two groups. Data was collected and analyzed with SPSS 16.0. In the study, 108 eyes of 57 patients (18 females, 39 males) underwent initial intravitreal injection. The mean birth weight was 1,440.0±357.7 g and the mean gestational age was 30.5±2.0 weeks. Eight of 57 (14.0%) patients showed unfavorable fibrovascular proliferation after initial ranibizumab treatment within 2 weeks. Among them, 11 eyes were controlled by further laser treatment and 3 eyes underwent vitrectomy. The difference of occurrence rate in hemorrhage between the two groups was significant (P<0.030), and the unfavorable group required more laser treatment (P<0.001). The incidence of unfavorable fibrovascular proliferation was relatively high, and intraocular hemorrhage was possibly associated with the progress in zone II stage 3 ROP after initial IVR injection.
Recurrence of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Zone II Stage 3+ after Ranibizumab Treatment: A Retrospective Study.

Abstract:Objective. To determine the prevalence and risk factors for the recurrence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Zone II Stage 3+ after ranibizumab treatment. Methods. This was a retrospective, nonrandomized, noncontrolled study that excluded Zone I and aggressive posterior ROP (APROP) cases. Infants who developed Zone II Stage 3 ROP with plus disease and underwent initial intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR) were recruited. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the outcome after initial ranibizumab treatment: recurrence of ROP or favorable outcome. Data was collected and analyzed by SPSS 16.0. Results. Forty-two patients were included, and 80 eyes with Zone II Stage 3+ were subjected to IVR treatment. Eleven of 42 patients (26.2%, 18 eyes) had a recurrence of ROP after the initial treatment. On univariate analysis, preretinal hemorrhage before treatment was significantly different between the two groups (P = 0.000). Multivariate analysis found that preretinal hemorrhage before treatment was the only factor associated with the recurrence of ROP in our study (P = 0.004). Conclusions. The recurrence rate of ROP in Zone II Stage 3+ after initial ranibizumab treatment was notable and preretinal hemorrhage before treatment was associated with the recurrence of ROP in our study.
Efficacy and Safety of Aflibercept and Ranibizumab in the Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity

Abstract:Purpose To compare the efficacy, recurrence rate, and recurrence interval of intravitreal injection of aflibercept (IVA) and ranibizumab (IVR) in patients with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Methods This is a single-center retrospective study of neonates hospitalized from January 2018 to March 2023 in the Department of Neonatology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University who received intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor owing to type 1 prethreshold ROP, threshold ROP, or aggressive posterior ROP. Clinical data were collected to record the cure, recurrence, number of injections, and side effects of ROP. Findings A total of 224 neonates (444 eyes) were enrolled in this study, of which 121 (241 eyes) received IVA and 103 (203 eyes) received IVR. There were no significant differences in the general characteristics of infants between the two groups ( P > 0.05). The corrected gestational age of the first injection was 37.27 ± 3.07 weeks in the IVA group and 37.20 ± 4.89 weeks in the IVR group ( P = 0.582). The recurrence rate was 15.8% in the IVA group and 14.9% in the IVR group ( P = 0.841). For relapsed infants, the postmenstrual age (PMA) was 34.89 ± 3.49 weeks in the IVA group and 35.28 ± 4.43 weeks in the IVR group at the first treatment. The PMA was 43.69 ± 4.57 and 40.96 ± 4.98 weeks at the second treatment in the IVA and IVR groups, respectively ( P = 0.185). There were two children in the IVA group that required a third treatment, with PMAs of 58.71 and 57.29 weeks at the time of surgery, and one child in the IVR group, with a PMA of 43.14 weeks at the time of injection ( P = 0.221). No complications were recorded in either group. Implications The efficacies of aflibercept and ranibizumab in treating ROP are similar, and the safety of the medications was good. Further research should be conducted in large-scale, prospective clinical trials, providing ophthalmologists with new options for the treatment of ROP.

Abstract:AIM: To describe the involution patterns of vessel growth of retina through fluorescein angiography (FA) of children, who had been under treatment up to 1y previously intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) as monotherapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).METHODS: This is a retrospective study. The medical information and FA of 17 children (34 eyes) whose area of avascular retina from the ora serrata was more than two disc diameters (DD) were analyzed.RESULTS: Among 34 eyes, all were the presence of finger-shaped vessels and arteriolar-venular shunts (100%, 34/34 eyes). Popcorn abnormalities were found in most of the eyes (94.1%, 32/34 eyes). Furthermore, in many cases (23.5%, 8/34 eyes), there were leakage persisting in the region of the junction between avascular and vascular retina. In contrast, just 2 eyes (5.9%) showed damage of retinal capillary bed and 3 eyes (8.8%) showed large area of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) atrophy.CONCLUSION: Although IVR can be very effective in ROP, we should remain cautious as infants may remain avascular peripheral retinas and abnormal vessel. FA allows accurate visualization of vessel abnormalities in eyes with ROP, which will be helpful to affect assessment of disease activity and therapeutic effect.
Six years follow-up of type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treated with intravitreal injection of ranibizumab and bevacizumab: Long-Term Outcomes of intravitreal injection in Type 1 ROP

Abstract:To investigate biometric and refractive results in patients with type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treated by intravitreal injection (IVI) of ranibizumab (R) and bevacizumab (B) at the corrected age of 6. This is a single-center retrospective study. Infants diagnosed with type 1 ROP and treated with IVI of either R or B as the primary therapy were included. Data on axial length, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and lens thickness (LT) were obtained using A-scan ultrasound. Cycloplegic refraction, keratometry (K), and best-corrected visual acuity were also documented. Additionally, optical coherence tomography angiography was performed to assess the foveal avascular zone and the density of superficial and deep vessels. We analyzed the structural and functional differences between the 2 groups and compared them with findings from a previous study conducted when these children were between the ages of 1 and 3. The study included 60 eyes from 34 patients, with 34 eyes receiving B and 26 eyes receiving R injections for ROP. In biometric outcomes, there was still a deeper ACD (3.36 ± 0.24 mm in the B group; 3.52 ± 0.21 mm in the R group) and thinner LT (3.63 ± 0.16 mm in the B group; 3.53 ± 0.12 mm in the R group) in the R group, as previously reported at the age of 3. In the refractive aspect, the eyes treated with B had higher myopia at the ages of 1 and 3; however, at the age of 6, refractive errors did not differ significantly between the 2 groups. At the corrected age of 6, the eyes treated with IVI of R were associated with deeper ACD and thinner LT. Interestingly, the emmetropization process resulted in a similar incidence of high myopia at the age of 6, which was different from the outcomes observed at younger ages.
SHORT-TERM OUTCOMES AFTER INTRAVITREAL INJECTIONS OF CONBERCEPT VERSUS RANIBIZUMAB FOR THE TREATMENT OF RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY.

Abstract:Purpose: Intravitreal injection of conbercept (IVC) is the latest applied treatment that could be used in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) patients. The structural outcomes and recurrence of ROP among patients treated with IVC or intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR) were compared. Methods: A consecutive case series of ROP treated with IVC or IVR were retrospectively studied. The primary outcome was treatment success defined as regression of plus disease. The secondary outcomes were recurrence of plus, times of injection, and the final regression of disease. Results: A total of 48 eyes (24 patients) with ROP were included. Twenty eyes (10 patients) received IVC, and 28 eyes (14 patients) received IVR. For the IVC group, 18 eyes had Zone II 3+ ROP and 2 eyes had aggressive posterior ROP. Among the 28 eyes treated with IVR, 6 eyes had Zone I 2/3+ ROP, 6 eyes had aggressive posterior ROP, and 16 eyes had Zone II 3+ ROP. For the IVC group, the mean gestational age, birth weight, postmenstrual age at initial treatment, and follow-up period for the infants were 29.49 +/- 1.37 weeks, 1,369.0 +/- 161.9 g, 38.47 +/- 2.72 weeks, and 52.6 +/- 21.4 weeks, respectively. And for the infants who received IVR, these were 28.35 +/- 1.62 weeks, 1,171.4 +/- 279.9 g, 38.53 +/- 3.54 weeks, and 42.9 +/- 9.8 weeks, respectively. For the IVC group, 17 (85%) of 20 eyes received the injection only once, and the regression of plus disease occurred 4.3 +/- 2.08 weeks later. Three eyes (15%) did not healed with one injection received a second IVC, and the regression of plus disease occurred within 3 weeks. For the IVR group, 15/28 (53.6%) eyes received a second IVR. Among them, 10 recurrent eyes and 5 eyes did not recover with one injection. No retinal detachment was observed in both group infants. Conclusion: Both conbercept and ranibizumab are effective choice for the treatment of ROP. Conbercept is a novel effective treatment strategy for ROP providing a new treatment option for ophthalmologists.
Changes in foveal avascular zone area and retinal vein diameter in patients with retinal vein occlusion detected by fundus fluorescein angiography

Abstract:Purpose To investigate changes in foveal avascular area (FAZ) and retinal vein diameter in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) after intravitreal ranibizumab, and to analyze the correlation between ranibizumab therapy and visual gain. Methods This retrospective study enrolled 95 eyes of 95 patients who had accepted three consecutive monthly ranibizumab injections, including 50 branch RVOs (BRVOs) and 45 central RVOs (CRVOs). BRVOs were divided into ischemia group ( n = 32) and non-ischemia group ( n = 18), and CRVOs also had ischemia group ( n = 28) and non-ischemia group ( n = 17). Comprehensive ophthalmic examinations were performed before the first injection and after 6, 12, and 24 months. The FAZ was manually circumscribed on early-phase images of fundus fluorescein angiography. Retinal vein diameters were measured on fundus photographs. Results After three injections, the FAZ area was significantly enlarged firstly and then reduced in all ischemic RVOs and the non-ischemic BRVOs ( p < 0.05), while the retinal vein diameter was significantly reduced firstly and then increased in all groups except for unobstructed branch veins of non-ischemic BRVOs ( p < 0.05). The correlation between the FAZ area and best corrected visual acuity was statistically significant in all CRVOs (non-ischemic, r = 0.372; ischemic, r = 0.286; p < 0.01) and ischemic BRVOs ( r = 0.180, p < 0.05). Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed that the retinal vein diameter was significantly correlated to the larger FAZ area in obstructed branch veins of ischemic BRVOs ( r = −0.31, p < 0.01), inferior temporal branch veins of non-ischemic CRVOs ( r = −0.461, p < 0.01) and ischemia CRVO groups (superior temporal branch vein, r = −0.226, p < 0.05; inferior temporal branch vein, r = −0.259, p < 0.01). Conclusion After three consecutive monthly ranibizumab injections, the FAZ area was enlarged and retinal vein diameter reduced with gradual recovery to near baseline from 12 months. These results suggest that ranibizumab therapy can worsen macular ischemia and prevent visual gain in the short term. It has important significance for the treatment and prognosis of RVO, although the natural course of RVO may also affect ischemia and visual gain.

The structure of the rhodium complex was determined by X-ray analysis and points to a description of these as [M(+1)((H)tropdad)(0)] with short Cd-N bonds (av 1.285 A) and a long C-C bond (1.46 A) in the diazabutadiene (dad) moiety, that is the M-->dad charge-transfer is negligible. Both [Rh((H)tropdad)](+) and [Ir((H)tropdad)](+) are reduced at very low potentials (E(1) (1/2)= -0.56 V and E(1) (1/2)=-0.35 V, respectively) which allowed the quantitative synthesis of the neutral paramagnetic complexes [M((H)tropdad)](0) (M=Rh, Ir) by reacting the cationic precursor complexes simply with zinc powder. The [M((H)tropdad)](0) complexes are stable against protic reagents in organic solvents. Continuous wave and pulse EPR spectroscopy was used to characterize the paramagnetic species and the hyperfine coupling constants were determined: [Rh((H)tropdad)](0): A(iso)((14)N)=11.9 MHz, A(iso)((1)H)=14.3 MHz, A(iso)((103)Rh)= -5.3 MHz; [Ir((H)tropdad)](0): A(iso)((14)N)=11.9 MHz, A(iso)((1)H)=14.3 MHz. In combination with DFT calculations, the experimentally determined g and hyperfine matrices could be orientated within the molecular frame and the dominant spin density contributions were determined. These results clearly show that the complexes [M((H)tropdad)](0) are best described as [M(+1)((H)tropdad)(.-)] with a [16+1] electron configuration.
Comparison of different agents and doses of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (aflibercept, bevacizumab, conbercept, ranibizumab) versus laser for retinopathy of prematurity: A network meta-analysis

Abstract:Laser photocoagulation (LPC) and/or intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections constitute the current standard treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). This network meta-analysis focus on whether a ranking of interventions may be established for different dose levels of intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF agents (aflibercept, bevacizumab, conbercept, ranibizumab) as primary treatments for ROP versus laser in terms of retreatment rate as primary outcome, and time to retreatment and refractive error as secondary endpoints, since best anti-VEGF dosage remains under debate. Sixty-eight studies (15 randomized control trials and 53 nonrandomized studies) of 12,356 eyes of 6,445 infants were retrieved from databases (2005 Jan. – 2023 June). Studies were evaluated for model fit, risk of bias and confidence of evidence in Network Meta-Analysis (CINeMA). Bayesian NMA showed that anti-VEGF drugs were not inferior to laser in terms of retreatment rate. For intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB), doses half of the conventional infant dose showed a low risk of retreatment rate (risk ratio (RR) of 1.43; 95% credible interval (CrI): 0.508, 4.03). On probability ranking as surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) plot, half dose of bevacizumab had a better position than conventional and augmented (1.2-2 times the regular dose) doses. A similar probability trend was observed for half vs. conventional doses of aflibercept and ranibizumab. Conventional infant dose of conbercept showed the lowest risk for retreatment (RR 0.846; 95% CrI: 0.245, 2.91). For secondary endpoints, lower doses of anti-VEGF agents were associated with shorter times to retreatment. The largest changes were noted for the augmented doses of bevacizumab and ranibizumab (0.3 mg) with means of 14.1 weeks (95% CrI: 6.65, 21.6) and 12.8 weeks (95% CrI: 3.19, 20.9), respectively. Finally, NMA demonstrated better refractive profile for anti-VEGF than laser therapy, especially for the conventional infant doses of bevacizumab and ranibizumab which exhibited a significantly better refractive profile than LPC, with mean differences of 1.67 (spherical equivalent - diopters) (95% CrI: 0.705, 2.67) and 2.19 (95% CrI: 0.782, 3.59), respectively. In the SUCRA plots, LPC had a markedly different position with a higher probability for myopia. Further clinical trials comparing different intravitreal doses of anti-VEGF agents are needed, but our findings suggest that low doses of these drugs retain efficacy and may reduce ocular and systemic undesired events.

Abstract:PurposeTo compare the efficacy and refractive outcomes of intravitreal bevacizumab, ranibizumab and aflibercept in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treatment.MethodsWe analyzed the files of patients treated with intravitreal bevacizumab, ranibizumab and aflibercept for ROP, retrospectively. A total of 187 eyes of 111 patients were included. Recurrence time after initial treatment, recurrence rate, age and rate of additional treatment, refractive outcomes in age 1, 2 and 3 were evaluated and compared between the groups.ResultsFifty-four eyes of 30 patients formed bevacizumab group (Group-1), 77 eyes of 47 patients formed ranibizumab group (Group-2) and 56 eyes of 34 patients formed aflibercept group (Group-3). No significant difference was found in gender, gestational age, birth weight and risk factors between the groups (p>0.05). Success rate was higher in group 3, but the difference was not significant (p = 0.174) (74.1% in group-1, 62.4% in group-2 and 76.8% in group-3). Recurrence rate was higher in group 2, but the difference was not significant (p = 0.158) (25.9% in group-1, 37.6% in group-2 and 23.2% in group-3). Recurrence time after initial treatment was significantly shorter in group 2 (p < 0.01). Additional treatment rate was also higher, and the age of additional treatment was lower in group-2 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). We found refractive values more myopic in ages of 1, 2 and 3 in group 1.ConclusionsBevacizumab, ranibizumab and aflibercept are effective treatment alternatives for ROP. We observed more frequent and much earlier recurrence in eyes treated with ranibizumab. A myopic shift was found in bevacizumab group. We also emphasize the necessity of longer follow-ups for infants treated with anti-VEGF drugs.

Long-Term Effects of Intravitreal Ranibizumab Compared With Panretinal Photocoagulation on Optical Coherence Tomography Measured Choroidal Thickness and Vascularity

Abstract:Purpose: Compare choroidal changes in ranibizumab versus panretinal photocoagulation (PRP)-treated eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: DRCR Retina Network Protocol S post hoc analysis evaluated optical coherence tomography change in choroidal thickness (subfoveal and 3mm superior and inferior to the fovea) through five years; choroidal vascularity index (CVI) was assessed at baseline and one year. Mixed linear models for choroidal change included adjustments for the baseline choroidal value and age. Results: This study included 328 eyes (158 ranibizumab and 170 PRP) from 256 participants (88 ranibizumab and 95 PRP eyes at five years). Mean change in choroidal thickness from baseline to five years at the fovea was -12 µm in ranibizumab versus -8 µm in PRP (difference [95% confidence interval]: -4 [-18 to 10], P = 0.57), superior was -14 µm versus -19 µm (difference: 5 [-8 to 17], P = 0.45) and inferior was -26 µm versus -32 µm [difference: 5 (-9 to 20), P = 0.45]; change at all three points within the ranibizumab group, and the superior and inferior points for PRP, were statistically significant (P < .05). Mean change in CVI at one year was -0.02% in ranibizumab versus -0.95% in PRP (difference: 0.93 [-0.35 to 2.21], P = 0.14). Conclusions: In patients with PDR, treatment with ranibizumab versus PRP did not result in statistically significant differences in five-year choroidal thickness or one-year CVI change. Both groups had significant decreases in choroidal thickness at five years. Translational relevance: Ranibizumab treatment for PDR did not statistically significantly affect choroidal thickness or vascularity differently than PRP.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In the year 2014 an epidemiological study was carried out again in the region of Łódź amongst 12-year old children as a part of general study in Poland. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of carries, caries severity measured by the DMF index among 12-year old children in the region of Łódź. MATERIAL AND METHODS 328 children aged 12 were randomly selected and examined, of which 176 girls and 152 boys respectively. The methodology was based on clinical examination according to WHO standards. The prevalence of carries, DMF index , treatment index was calculated in łodzkie voivodeship. RESULTS The studies indicated that the prevalence of caries was 67.8 % for 12-year old children and decreased 1.4% in comparison with last studies in the region of Łódź. DMF index also decreased and the value was 1.63. The score obtained caused that the goal proposed by the WHO for 2015 for 12-year-old children was achieved in łodzkie voivodeship. SiC index in the study group was estimated at 4.03. Compare to the previous study in the SiC index value has been reduced in Łódzkie voivodeship. The result makes our study group very close to the next goal proposed by the WHO for 12-year-old children where SiC index should be less than 4. CONCLUSIONS Intensity and prevalence of caries for 12 year old children in Łódź and surrounds suggests that it is on the decrease, and dental state in the study group is satisfactory.
Fluorescein Angiographic Findings of Peripheral Retinal Vasculature after Intravitreal Conbercept Versus Ranibizumab for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Abstract:Purpose. To evaluate angiographic findings of peripheral retina vasculature in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) neonates who received intravitreal conbercept (IVC) or ranibizumab (IVR). Methods. Fluorescein angiography (FA) findings were retrospectively evaluated for ROP neonates who received IVC or IVR. Outcome measures included peripheral avascular zone, vascular leakage, vascular blunting, vascular loops, vascular dilatation, arteriovenous shunt, and capillary dropout. Results. Fifty-four eyes (28 patients) with ROP were included. Twenty-nine eyes (15 patients) received IVC, and 25 eyes (13 patients) received IVR. For infants of the IVC group, the mean gestational age, birth weight, and postmenstrual age (PMA) at the initial treatment were 28.96 +/- 2.36 weeks, 1168.8 +/- 344.5 g, and 41.22 +/- 4.39 weeks, respectively. For the IVR group, they were 28.83 +/- 2.34 weeks, 1255.0 +/- 356.9 g, and 39.42 +/- 2.77 weeks, respectively (P=0.817, 0.522, and 0.075). For the IVC group, FA performed at 71.29-115.43 weeks PMA showed 96.55% of eyes had avascular zone; vascular leakage was found in 24.14% eyes; vascular blunting, vascular dilation, vascular loops, arteriovenous shunt, and capillary dropout were found in 96.55%, 72.41%, 79.31%, 48.28%, and 68.97% eyes, respectively. For the IVR group, FA performed at 65.57-133.71 weeks PMA showed 92.0% of eyes had avascular zone; vascular leakage was found in 40.0% eyes; vascular blunting, dilatation, loops, arteriovenous shunt, and capillary dropout were found in 100%, 60.0%, 64.0%, 36.0%, and 68.0% eyes, respectively. Conclusion. No significant difference can be observed between the IVC group and IVR group for peripheral vascular structure anomalies with FA evidence. FA studies should be considered to assess the status of the peripheral retinal vasculature to determine therapeutic outcomes and potential functional outcomes.
