Abstract:Abstract Introduction Cortisol awakening response (CAR), diurnal slope (DS), and total daily output (TDO) are metrics of the hormone, cortisol. Emerging adults (ages 18-28 years old) experience poor sleep, which is linked to a blunted CAR, flatter DS, and obesity risk. Little data exists on these measures in Black emerging adults, despite higher risks of poor sleep and obesity. This analysis aims to examine relationships between sleep architecture, cortisol metrics, and body mass and composition changes over 6 months in Black emerging adults. Methods In a repeated measures design, 14 Black emerging adults (12 females; age, 21±2.5 years; height, 166±9.3 cm; body mass, 73.0±12.9 kg; body fat, 27.4±10.8%) completed an initial (BLN) and 6-month follow-up (6MO) visit. In-home sleep over 2 nights was captured with polysomnography. Salivary cortisol was collected at wake, 30-, 45-min post-wake, 12pm, and 7pm on 2 days. CAR area under the curve (AUC) was calculated with the wake, 30-, and 45-min post-wake samples with respect to wake (AUCi) and to ground (AUCg). DS was calculated as the slope using wake, 12pm, and 7pm samples. TDO AUC was calculated using all samples with respect to ground. Body mass and composition were assessed with BodPod. Paired t-tests evaluated differences in all variables between BLN and 6MO. Pearson correlations assessed relationships between sleep stage duration, cortisol metrics, and body mass and composition at each timepoint, and 6-month changes in these variables. Results There was an increase in body mass (MD: 2.7 kg, 95%CI [1.0, 4.4], p< 0.01), but not fat mass (p>0.05). REM sleep duration was positively associated with TDO at BLN (r = 0.57, p=0.03) but not at 6MO. REM sleep duration at BLN was also positively associated with 6-month changes in body mass (r=0.55; p=0.03). Greater increases in slow-wave sleep (SWS) duration were associated with a more positive DS (r = 0.73; p< 0.01). Conclusion These results suggest that greater amounts of REM sleep are associated with greater cortisol output and body weight changes, whereas greater amounts of SWS are associated with better DS profiles. Abstract:Abstract Introduction Body weight is determined by sustained changes in energy balance (EB), reflecting the difference between energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE). Insufficient sleep negatively impacts EB to favor weight gain. Black emerging adults have a higher risk for insufficient sleep and obesity, but little data exists on these measures in this population. This analysis aims to examine relationships between sleep architecture with parameters of energy balance (EI and EE) in Black emerging adults. Methods In a repeated measures design, 15 Black emerging adults (12 females; age, 21±2.5 years; height, 168±11.1 cm; body mass, 72.4±12.6 kg; body fat, 25.8±11.9%) completed an initial (BLN) and 6-month follow-up (6MO) visit. In-home sleep over 2 nights was captured with polysomnography. Physical activity EE (PAEE) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured over seven days via actigraphy and calculated using the Freedson VM3 Combination and Freedson (1998) algorithms, respectively. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) and thermic effect of food were measured via indirect calorimetry. Ad libitum EI was measured using 3 days of provided meals. Spearman’s Rank correlations assessed relationships between changes in sleep measures (minutes and percentage of stage 2, slow wave sleep (SWS), and REM) with changes in parameters of EB. Linear mixed models assessed relationships between sleep variables and EB variables, with participant ID as a grouping variable and body weight as a covariate. Results There were no significant associations between changes in sleep architecture with changes in EB variables. SWS duration was positively related to EI (Beta = 9.11, 95%CI [0.486, 17.734], p = 0.049). RMR was inversely related to stage 2 percentage (Beta = -63.3, 95%CI [-101.48, -25.12], p < 0.01), SWS percentage (Beta = -52.63, SE: 18.85, p = 0.01), and REM percentage (Beta = -55.36, 95%CI [-92.84, -17.88], p = 0.01). Conclusion These results suggest that greater SWS duration was related to higher EI, and that relative time spent in stage 2 sleep, SWS, and REM sleep were inversely related to RMR. Therefore, habitual measures of sleep architecture may impact obesity risk via modifications in EB parameters in Black emerging adults. Support (if any)

This analysis aims to examine relationships between sleep architecture with appetite and food reward over 6 months in Black emerging adults. In-home sleep over 2 nights was measured with polysomnography. Outcome measures included fasting and post-standard breakfast appetite sensations over 180 minutes (desire to eat, hunger, fullness, and prospective food consumption; visual analogue scales) and food reward (implicit wanting, explicit liking and explicit wanting; Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire). Linear mixed models using a restricted maximum likelihood estimation with a Kenward-Roger correction for small samples were used to assess associations between sleep stage duration (minutes of stage 2, slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep) with fasting appetite sensations, post-meal appetite area under the curve (AUC) and food reward measures. Covariates included time (BLN vs. 6MO) and body weight. Participant ID was used as a grouping variable. Results No significant associations were noted between sleep stage duration with fasting appetite sensations and post-breakfast appetite AUC. Lower stage 2 sleep duration was associated with greater explicit wanting (β= -0.13, 95%CI [-0.23, -0.04], p=0.01) and explicit liking (β= -0.19, 95%CI [-0.28, -0.11], p< 0.0001) for sweet relative to savory foods. Conclusion These findings suggest that habitual, in-home measures of sleep stage duration are not associated with appetite sensations in Black emerging adults. However, greater explicit wanting and liking for sweet relative to savory foods in response to lower stage 2 sleep duration may be a mechanism by which short sleep duration leads to an increased risk of positive energy balance and obesity over time. Abstract:Abstract Introduction Perceived discrimination is associated with sleep health problems. This association is even stronger among Black/African Americans, who are typically exposed to more frequent discrimination in the US. Limited research examines how perceptions of discrimination impact young adults’ sleep health, particularly using objective measures. The current study investigated the association between perceived discrimination experiences and sleep health among Black/African American young adults. Methods Data from age 22 wave of the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing, Young Adult Sleep Study (YASS) included Black/African American young adults (n = 221) who self-reported experiences of discrimination due to their race/skin color, gender, and age. Wrist-worn actigraphy measures across ~2 weeks included sleep duration, sleep maintenance efficiency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Multiple linear regression models examined the association between perceived discrimination experiences based on personal attributes and dimensions of sleep adjusting for age, gender, and educational attainment. Results Among this sample of Black/African American young adults, perceived experiences of discrimination in their life were not associated with actigraphic sleep duration. Perceived discrimination attributed to race/skin color, age, or gender were not associated with sleep duration. Perceived experiences of discrimination in their life were also not associated with actigraphic sleep maintenance efficiency. Perceived discrimination attributed to age was associated with lower sleep maintenance efficiency (-3.01%, p<.001) and more WASO (+10.64 minutes/night, p=.004) compared to young adults who did not perceive age discrimination. Perceived discrimination attributed to gender was associated with lower sleep maintenance efficiency (-2.12%, p=.023) and more WASO (+9.47 minutes/night, p=.019), and were not different between women and men. Gender did not modify associations of sleep measures with perceived discrimination attributed to race/skin color or age. Conclusion Black/African American young adults’ perceived discrimination due to specific personal attributes (age and gender) are linked to lower sleep maintenance efficiency and more WASO. Future longitudinal research should examine whether perceived discrimination in young adulthood predicts poorer sleep health across time. Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep is vital to maintaining psychological and physiological health. Poor sleep is associated with adverse health outcomes, including obesity. Studies have shown that African Americans disproportionately suffer from poor sleep and the adverse health outcome associated with obesity. We aimed to determine if sleep quality and peripheral inflammation are significant predictors of obesity in a young adult African American sample. Methods Participants were healthy adults with a body mass index of less than 40 between 18- 35 who self-identified as Black or African American and completed a protocol consisting of in-lab polysomnography, ambulatory monitoring and a morning blood draw. Height and weight were collected to derive body mass index (BMI). Total sleep time (TST), wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep onset latency (SOL), and sleep efficiency (SE) were derived from in-home actigraphy. Venipuncture was used to collect blood samples within 15 minutes of awakening. Once samples were processed, interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were detected and quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Results Significant correlations were found between BMI, WASO, TST, SE, and IL-6. A forward stepwise linear regression was used to identify possible predictors of BMI out of the following candidate variables: TST, SE, WASO, and IL-6. At each step, variables were chosen according to their contribution to the model's R^2. The p-value threshold of 0.05 was used to set a limit on the total number of variables included in the final model. TST, WASO, and IL6 were the significant predictors in the final model that accounted for 26% of the variance in BMI (∆R2 = .260, p<.001). Regression coefficients suggest that IL-6 (β =.388), TST (β= -.234), and WASO (β=.205) predict obesity. Conclusion Total sleep time and wake after sleep onset are modifiable protective and risk factors that appear to be significant contributors to obesity in urban-residing young African Americans. Abstract:Research indicates that sleep duration and quality are inter-related factors that contribute to obesity, but few studies have focused on sleep chronotype, representing an individual's circadian proclivity, nor assessed these factors in racially diverse middle-aged samples. We examined the associations between chronotype and obesity among black and white men and women participating in the Bogalusa Heart Study (BHS).Body mass index (BMI) and sleep data were available for 1,197 middle-aged men and women (mean age 48.2 ± 5.3 years) who participated in the BHS 2013-2016. Based on the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire's cutoff values for chronotypes, we combined 'definitely morning' and 'moderately morning' types into 'morning' type, 'definitely evening' and 'moderately evening' types into 'evening' type and kept those who were "neither" type in a separate group. We used 'morning' type as the referent group. Obesity was defined as a BMI ≥ 30. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine associations adjusting for sex, age, education, smoking, alcohol use and drug use, depression, shift work, physical activity and sleep duration.Evening chronotype, reported by 11.1% of participants, was associated with obesity after multi-variable adjustment, including shift work, physical activity and sleep duration (OR 1.67, 95% CI: 1.08-2.56). However, once stratified by race (black/white), this association was found only among white participants (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.12-3.25) after full adjustment.In our biracial, community-based population, evening chronotype was independently associated with obesity, specifically among white participants. Further research is needed to identify behavioral, endocrine, nutritional and genetic pathways which underlie these associations.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction College students are an at-risk population for poor sleep health and higher body mass index (BMI), which are both linked to negative health outcomes later in life. Most studies examining the relationship between sleep and BMI are cross-sectional or have collected self-reported sleep data. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between an objective measure of sleep assessed with a Phillips Respironics Actiwatch 2 device and BMI in college students. It was hypothesized that poorer sleep health would be related to higher BMI. Methods At three time points across the first two years of college (i.e., 8 months apart), participants (N=116) wore an Actiwatch 2 device for one week and had their height and weight measured. The sample demographics were 71% female, 72% White or Caucasian, and an average BMI of 24.07. Sleep health was defined by sleep duration, wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep fragmentation, and midpoint of sleep. Each variable was scored as weekday (Sunday to Thursday) or weekend (Friday and Saturday). Results A linear mixed effects model using R was conducted after a person-mean variable (between person) and a person-mean centered variable (within person) were created for each participant. Weekday person-mean sleep duration was negatively related to BMI (t = -2.81), indicating shorter sleep duration was related to higher BMI across time. After controlling for between person effects, there were enduring relationships between both person-mean centered sleep duration (t = -3.12) and WASO (t = 2.06) and BMI, indicating that shorter sleep duration and greater WASO was related to higher BMI within participants across time. No significant relationships were found between weekend sleep variables and BMI. Conclusion The current findings add to a growing literature indicating that poor sleep health is related to increased BMI. In particular, the findings indicate that shorter sleep duration and greater WASO may increase risk for weight gain across time but are specific to weekday sleep behaviors. Although alterations in biological and behavioral processes likely serve as the mechanisms by which these variables influence BMI, additional research is needed to understand how this occurs and why weekday sleep behaviors are particularly important. Abstract:Abstract Introduction Emerging adults, especially Black college students, are at risk for poor sleep outcomes. Race and family support are crucial factors linked to sleep, yet lifestyle and health factors are frequently investigated in this population. We examined sleep quality as a mediator of the association between race-related stress and depression at varying levels of housing security and kinship support. Methods Black students attending a large predominantly White institute (n = 93, 86.02% female, Mage = 21.7 years, 41.9% low SES) reported on sleep quality, race-related experiences, family factors, and depression. A moderated mediation model was tested using methods established by Baron and Kenny (1986). Participants’ sleep was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (Buysse et al., 1989). 86% of participants reported poor sleep based on the recommended cutoff (5 points) established by Buysse (1989), with a higher score indicating poorer sleep quality. Results Sleep partially mediated the association between race-related stress and depression. A significant association between race-related stress and depression was found in a simple mediation analysis (b=0.25, p< 0.001), however, the relationship between race-related stress and depression was non-significant (b=0.114, p=0.07) after introducing sleep as a mediator. Sleep was a significant predictor of depression (b=1.69, p< 0.001), and its inclusion significantly improved the model, explaining an additional 25 percent of the variance in depression (R^2=0.25, p< 0.001). Associations between race-related stress and sleep quality varied by the level of kinship support and housing security. The association of race-related stress with depression through sleep is significant for participants with low kinship support (b = .220, p < 0.001), but not for those with high kinship support (b=.056, p= .364). Similarly, the association of race-related stress with depression through sleep was significant for participants experiencing housing insecurity (b=.175, p < .001), but not for those experiencing housing security (b=.07, p = .211). Conclusion The conditional effects of kinship support and housing security emphasize the crucial role of social support in mitigating the adverse effects of racial stress on sleep. Our findings demonstrate the interplay of race, sleep, and adjustment, suggesting the importance of tailored interventions for promoting the well-being of Black college students. Support (if any)

Abstract:Objectives: To examine the role of health behaviors (eg, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and diet) in the relationship between sleep (ie, duration and quality) and BMI among African American adults. Design: A cross-sectional self-report questionnaire included questions related to health and health-related behaviors. Setting: This study was based on data from the CHURCH study, which aimed to address cancer health disparities among church-going African Americans in Houston, TX. Participants: African American adults were recruited fromthree large community churches. The sample included a total of 1837 participants (75.2% female; mean age 48.2 +/- 13.7y; mean BMI 32.0 +/- 7.5 kg/m(2)). Measurements: Linear regression models and path analyses controlling for demographic characteristics and depression estimated the associations between sleep and BMI as well as the mediating roles of health behaviors. Results: The average self-reported sleep durationwas 6.2 +/- 1.5 h/night with 61%, 35.8%, and 1.6% reporting short (<= 6 h/night), normal (7-9 h/night), and long sleep (>= 10 h/night), respectively. Short sleep was related to greater BMI (b = 1.37, SE = 0.38, P =.01), and the relationship was mediated by sedentary behaviors (est. = 0.08, SE = 0.04, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.17). Conclusions: Short sleep and poor quality sleepwas related to poor diet and physical activity-related health behaviors, and BMI. Acinetobacter baumannii Response to Host-Mediated Zinc Limitation Requires the Transcriptional Regulator Zur

Abstract:ABSTRACT Acinetobacter baumannii is a leading cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia in intensive care units, and the increasing rates of antibiotic resistance make treating these infections challenging. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop new antimicrobials to treat A. baumannii infections. One potential therapeutic option is to target bacterial systems involved in maintaining appropriate metal homeostasis, processes that are critical for the growth of pathogens within the host. The A. baumannii inner membrane zinc transporter ZnuABC is required for growth under low-zinc conditions and for A. baumannii pathogenesis. The expression of znuABC is regulated by the transcriptional repressor Zur. To investigate the role of Zur during the A. baumannii response to zinc limitation, a zur deletion mutant was generated, and transcriptional changes were analyzed using RNA sequencing. A number of Zur-regulated genes were identified that exhibit increased expression both when zur is absent and under low-zinc conditions, and Zur binds to predicted Zur box sequences of several genes affected by zinc levels or the zur mutation. Furthermore, the zur mutant is impaired for growth in the presence of both high and low zinc levels compared to wild-type A. baumannii. Finally, the zur mutant exhibits a defect in dissemination in a mouse model of A. baumannii pneumonia, establishing zinc sensing as a critical process during A. baumannii infection. These results define Zur-regulated genes within A. baumannii and demonstrate a requirement for Zur in the A. baumannii response to the various zinc levels experienced within the vertebrate host.
Everyday perceptions of safety and racial disparities in hair cortisol concentration

Abstract:Objective: Black-White disparities in physiological stress during adolescence are increasingly evident but remain incompletely understood. We examine the role of real-time perceptions of safety in the context of everyday routines to gain insight into the sources of observed adolescent racial differences in chronic stress as measured by hair cortisol concentration (HCC). Method: We combined social survey, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), and hair cortisol data on 690 Black and White youth ages 11-17 from wave 1 of the Adolescent Health and Development in Context (AHDC) study to investigate racial differences in physiological stress. Individual-level, reliability-adjusted measures of perceived unsafety outside the home were drawn from a week-long smartphone-based EMA and tested for association with hair cortisol concentration. Results: We observed a statistically significant interaction (p < .05) between race and perceptions of unsafety. For Black youth, perceived unsafety was associated with higher HCC (p < .05). We observed no evidence of an association between perceptions of safety and expected HCC for White youth. For youth who perceive their out-of-home activity locations to be consistently safe, the racial difference in expected HCC was not statistically significant. At the high end of perceived unsafety, however, Black-White differences in HCC were pronounced (0.75 standard deviations at the 95th percentile on perceived unsafety; p < .001). Discussion: These findings call attention to the role of everyday perceptions of safety across non-home routine activity contexts in explaining race differences in chronic stress as assessed by hair cortisol concentrations. Future research may benefit from data on in situ experiences to capture disparities in psychological and physiological stress.

Abstract:Objectives: Examine associations between sleep duration and differences between weekday and weekend sleep with body mass index and waist circumference in a sample of high-risk Black women from the SisterTalk II study. Design: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from an intervention study targeting dietary and physical activity behaviors. Setting: Women were recruited from the Providence, RI, USA, area. Participants: The sample includes 569 middle-aged Black women who were hypertensive or at risk for hypertension. Measurements: Participants self-reported their weekday and weekend sleep duration. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were objectively measured. Associations between the sleep and anthropometric measures were examined using analysis of variance and multivariable regression models controlling for birthplace, educational attainment, employment status, and annual household income. Results: 25.5% of the sample were very short sleepers (≤6 hrs), 28.8% short sleepers (≥6 to <7 hrs), 40.4% recommended sleepers (≥7 to ≤9 hrs), and 5.3% long sleepers (>9 hrs); 70.7% had a consistent sleep duration (≤2-hour difference between weekday and weekend sleep duration), 21.6% were classified as "weekend snoozers" (>2-hours more sleep on weekends), and 7.7% were classified as "weekend warriors" (>2-hours less sleep on weekends). Compared to recommended sleepers, very short sleepers and long sleepers had significantly greater BMIs, while long sleepers had significantly larger WCs. Being a weekend snoozer was also associated with increased BMI and WC. Conclusions: In this sample of high-risk Black women, sleep duration and differences between weekday and weekend sleep were independently associated with excess weight and abdominal obesity.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Poor sleep and mental health problems commonly emerge in adolescence, with a higher prevalence in females and those who suffer from obesity. Here, we evaluated the complex associations between poor sleep, obesity, and biological sex and how they interact to influence wellbeing in a large, diverse cohort of adolescents in the US. Methods Data were analyzed from 7,261 adolescents (Year 2: Mean age=11.94 years, range: 10-14 years, 47.3% female), collected as part of the ongoing ABCD Study®. Sleep duration was assessed with the Munich Chronotype questionnaire (youth-report), and sleep quality was assessed with a question about having trouble falling or staying asleep in the past two weeks from the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (KSADS-5) (youth-report). Internalizing and externalizing problems were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (caregiver-report). Positive affect was assessed with the NIH-toolbox measures. Regression models examined associations between obesity (>95 body mass index percentile), sleep behavior and mental health, considering sex differences, age, and socio-demographic characteristics. Results Short sleep duration and poorer sleep quality, as well as obesity were associated with higher internalizing (p<.01) and externalizing (p<.01) problems. Adolescents with obesity and prolonged sleep duration had higher internalizing (p=.01) and externalizing problems (p<.01). Shorter sleep duration (p<.01) and poorer sleep quality (p=.01) were associated with lower positive affect, with stronger effects in female adolescents. Obesity partially mediated the association between sleep problems and positive affect (p<.01). Conclusion This study demonstrates a strong link between sleep, obesity, and mental health outcomes in adolescents, highlighting significant sex differences. Poor sleep quality and obesity is related to more internalizing and externalizing problems and lower positive affect, with notable with notable impacts on female adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of addressing sleep and obesity in adolescent mental health interventions, recognizing the unique vulnerabilities and needs of male and female adolescents and those with obesity. Abstract:Objective: To examine sex and racial/ethnic differences in sleep quality and the association between sleep quality and body weight status among US college students. Participants: A nationally representative sample (N = 324,767) of college students from 2011 to 2015. Methods: A secondary data analysis of cross-sectional data. Results: Women showed poorer sleep quality (nights per week getting enough sleep to feel rested) than men (4.00 versus 4.34 days; p < .001). In both men and women, compared with non-Hispanic whites, racial/ethnic minorities showed lower sleep quality (p < .001). Compared with normal weight participants, overweight participants had poorer sleep quality (p = .007) among men, and both overweight (p = .004) and obese participants (p < .001) had lower sleep quality among women. Conclusions: Understanding sex and racial/ethnic sleep differences and the association between sleep and body weight status is important for colleges to promote college students' healthy sleep.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep disparities are well-documented in the population. Rarely are multiple dimensions of sleep experience evaluated on a national level, however. Even more novel is the implication that these differences are partially explained by mental health disparities. Methods Data from the Sleep In America Poll included a population-level sample of US adults. N=1042 adults provided complete data. Sleep health metrics included weekday and weekend bedtime and waketime, time in bed, and sleep duration, perceived sleep need, sleep debt (sleep need – duration), and days/week of: feeling well-rested, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, sleep impacting daytime function, daytime sleepiness, and taking sleep medication. Covariates included age, sex, education, household income, and PHQ9 depression score (without the sleep item). Linear regression analyses examined sleep variable as dependent variable and race/ethnicity (Non-Hispanic White, Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Asian/Other) as independent variable, adjusted for covariates. Secondary analyses examined race/ethnicity-by-depression interactions. Results In population-weighted, adjusted analyses, compared to non-Hispanic Whites, Blacks/African-Americans reported 0.78hr delayed weekend waketime (95%CI: 0.14,1.43) an additional 0.49 days/week of daytime sleepiness (95%CI: 0.05,0.93), 0.47 fewer days/week taking sleeping medications (95%CI: -0.80,-0.14), 0.41hr perceived sleep need (95%CI: -0.74,-0.10), and 0.51hr weekday less sleep duration (95%CI: -0.87,-0.15). Hispanics/Latinos reported 1.05 days/week difficulty staying asleep (95%CI: -1.42,-0.67) and 0.38 fewer days/week taking sleep medications (95%CI: -0.70,-0.07). Asians/others reported 0.73 fewer days/week with trouble staying asleep (95%CI: -1.26,-0.19) and 0.51 fewer days/week taking sleep medications. Significant group-by-depression interactions were seen for weekday and weekend bedtime, weekday time in bed, days/week well rested, perceived sleep need, weekday sleep duration, and sleep debt. Stratified analyses showed that Blacks/African Americans and Asians/Others especially reported worse sleep health in the presence of higher depression scores, compared to Non-Hispanic Whites. Conclusion Several dimensions of sleep health were disproportionately experienced across race/ethnicity groups in the US. In particular, worse sleep health in Blacks/African-Americans and Asians/Others was further impacted by depression symptoms. Future work should further explore the role of mental health disparities in sleep health and mental health interventions may reduce sleep disparities. Support (if any)

Abstract:IntroductionTransitions into adulthood and starting higher education can be a challenge in habit formation of first-year students. Unhealthy habits related to eating, exercise, substance consumption and sleep can lead to rapid weight gain and conditions such as metabolic syndrome. Research has suggested that regardless of sleep knowledge, favorable sleep attitudes predict better sleep. Thus, our aim was to investigate whether sleep attitudes directly predicted risk for metabolic syndrome or indirectly via subjective and objective sleep measures.MethodsFirst year college students (N=165) completed self-report measures and were brought into the lab for height, weight, body fat, blood sugar and fats, and blood pressure analyses. Participants wore FitBit Flex wristwatches to collect sleep data for seven consecutive days. Preliminary correlational analyses were conducted on sleep and obesity measures. Two separate path analyses were conducted to investigate whether there was a direct effect of sleep attitude on risk for metabolic syndrome or indirect via subjective sleep (sleep quality, duration and apnea) and objective sleep (sleep efficiency, duration and apnea). Two moderated mediations were conducted to investigate the effects of gender and age.ResultsThe average age was 18.66 (SD=3.33) with the majority of the sample being female (63%) and White (55.9%). In our subjective sleep analysis, we found that sleep attitudes predicted quality and duration, but not apnea, and that the overall model yielded significance. In our objective model, only apnea was a significant predictor, as well as the overall model. The indirect relationships were not moderated by gender or age.ConclusionPoor sleep attitudes are related to risk for metabolic syndrome in college aged individuals. Future studies should further examine sleep attitudes as a modifiable risk factor to prevent disease.Support (If Any)NA

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Previous studies, mostly with small sample sizes, demonstrate inconsistent associations between the socioeconomic neighborhood environment and sleep among adults. Using data from a large cohort, we examined the association between neighborhood deprivation and sleep health. Methods The Cancer Prevention Study-3 is a large prospective cohort of American men and women enrolled at baseline between 2006 and 2013. The Neighborhood Deprivation Index (NDI) was derived for US census tracts using principal components analysis of 2008-2012 American Community Survey data on poverty, income, occupation, housing, employment, and education. Participant addresses at baseline were geocoded to the tract level and linked to the NDI. Participants (N=180,592) self-reported, in categories, their sleep duration in a 24-hour period on weekdays and weekends on the 2015 follow-up questionnaire and sleep quality in 2018. Weekly habitual sleep duration was calculated from a weighted average of weekday and weekend durations. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between NDI in quintiles and each sleep outcome, overall and by race and ethnicity. Results Participants had an average age of 48.6 (standard deviation=9.6) years and were predominantly women (79.2%). Most participants identified as White (93.5%), while smaller proportions identified with racial and ethnic minoritized populations (e.g., Black: 2.6%, Hispanic: 5.6%). Compared to the least deprived neighborhoods, living in the most deprived neighborhoods was associated with a 25% (OR=1.25, 95% CI 1.18-1.33) higher odds of short (< 7 hours) versus recommended (7-8 hours) sleep duration. Neighborhood deprivation was also associated with an increased odds of long sleep duration (≥9 hours; OR=1.13, 95% CI 1.06-1.21) and poor sleep quality (OR=1.06, 95% CI 1.01-1.10). Race and ethnicity modified the relationship between neighborhood deprivation and long sleep duration, such that the association was only observed among White participants. Conclusion Results from this large well-powered study indicate neighborhood deprivation may adversely impact sleep health by increasing the odds of shorter and longer than recommended sleep duration and poor sleep quality. Abstract:Swim goggles with a moist chamber effect have been used successfully in seven patients with severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca unresponsive to the conventional means of therapy including artificial tears, mucolytics, and occlusion of the puncta. The longest follow-up is three years, the shortest six months. There have been no complications, and in all cases the patients have been subjectively and objectively improved.
