Abstract:Atmospheric precipitable water (PW) is the basis of precipitation (P) formation, and the spatial difference between them is one of the focus of water resources research. Based on daily P from 552 meteorological stations and four reanalysis datasets during 1980-2016, the spatial-temporal pattern of PW and precipitation conversion rate (PWCR) in China are investigated using the whole layer atmospheric PW calculation formula, univariate linear regression, and inverse distance weighting. Results showed that ERA-Interim reanalysis seems to match the magnitude and pattern of P over China with small regional differences. At daily scale, an increase (decrease) in P was connected with an increase (decrease) of PW in most regions, and the temporal change showed that PW was highest in summer and lowest in winter. Across China, the mean daily PW for CFSR, ERA-Interim, JRA 55, and NCEP-1 varied between 41.18-48.43 mm, 39.02-43.13 mm, 37.41-41.79 mm, and 43.06-48.33 mm, respectively in summer and between 11.67-13.79 mm, 10.21-11.87 mm, 9.96-11.83 mm, 11.92-13.73 mm in winter. The spatial pattern of PW showed increased moisture over the southwest, with a maximum positive trend of about 0.25 mm per day, particularly over the Tibet Plateau. Moreover, summer and autumn had the highest and lowest PWCR, respectively. During summer, PWCR for CFSR, ERA-Interim, JRA 55 and NCEP-1 ranged between 8.3-11.9%, 8.1-9.7%, 10.3-11.7% and 9.4-14.1%, while in autumn, 6.4-9.8%, 5.9-7.7%, 7.1-9.5%, and 8.1-12.3% were reported, respectively. Therefore, the potential of P arising from PW was great in summer. The PWCR had a declining trend from east to west and from south to north in space and the regional fluctuation was large, making the regional development potential of atmospheric water resources obvious. These results that lead to a better understanding of water vapour conversion over China will help to rationally develop and utilize atmospheric water resources.
Opposing Industrial Era Moisture Patterns Between Basins and Mountains in Southern Arid Central Asia

Abstract:Investigations of the evolution of naturally and anthropogenically driven hydrology in arid regions are of great significance for hydrological forecasts. Here, we built the past ~500-year history of lake area and discharge of Lake Tuosu in the northeastern Qaidam Basin. We found that the lake area and inflow variations were sensitive to westerly-forced winter-spring precipitation and showed long-term decreasing trends after 1850. Enhanced local human activities (e.g., agricultural irrigation) led to further rapid shrinkage of Lake Tuosu during 1990-2000, and the lake size reached its minimum in the past ~ 500 years in approximately 2000. Our integrated moisture indices for mountains and basins in southern arid Central Asia showed opposing trends, and the humidity gradient from mountains to basins successively increased after 1850, which may be linked to the migration of the boreal westerlies, global warming, and human activities. After 1950, the humidity increased further, reaching its maximum value in approximately 2000, which likely resulted from the excessive utilization of water resources from anthropogenic activities. Therefore, the mountain-river-basin hydrological system in arid Central Asia has changed significantly, beyond the natural variation pattern, after CE 1950. Therefore, integrated management and rational utilization of water resources are important for ecological protection and sustainable development in the future.
Dynamics of carbon and water vapor fluxes in three typical ecosystems of Heihe River Basin, Northwestern China

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of carbon and water vapor fluxes in arid inland river basin ecosystems is essential for predicting and assessing the regional carbon-water budget amid climate change. However, studies aiming to unravel the mechanisms driving the variations and coupling process of regional carbon-water budget in a changing environment in arid regions are limited. Here, we used the eddy covariance technique to analyze the relationship between CO 2 and H 2 O fluxes in three typical ecosystems across the upper, middle, and lower reaches of an arid inland river basin in Northwestern China. Our results showed that all ecosystems acted as carbon sinks, with the alpine swamp meadow, cropland, and desert shrubland sequestrating −300.2 ± 0.01, −644.8 ± 2.9, and − 203.7 ± 22.5 g C m −2 yr −1 , respectively. Air temperature ( T a ) primarily controlled daily gross primary productivity ( GPP ) and net ecosystem CO 2 exchange ( NEE ) in the irrigated cropland during the growing season, while soil temperature ( T s ) and vapor pressure deficit ( VPD ) regulated these parameters in the alpine swamp meadow and desert shrubland. Additionally, T a and net radiation ( R n ) controlled daily evapotranspiration ( ET ) in cropland, while T s and R n regulated ET at other sites. Consequently, carbon and water vapor fluxes of all three ecosystems tended to be energy-limited during the growing season. The differential responses of carbon and water vapor fluxes in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of these ecosystems to biophysical factors determined their distinct coupling and variations in water use efficiency. Notably, the desert shrub ecosystem in the lower reach of the basin maintained a stable balance between carbon gain and water loss, indicating adaptation to aridity. This study provides valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms behind the changes in carbon and water vapor fluxes and water-use efficiency in arid river basin ecosystems.

Abstract:The global water cycle is becoming more intense in a warming climate, leading to extreme rainstorms and floods. In addition, the delicate balance of precipitation, evapotranspiration, and runoff affects the variations in soil moisture, which is of vital importance to agriculture. A systematic examination of climate change impacts on these variables may help provide scientific foundations for the design of relevant adaptation and mitigation measures. In this study, long-term variations in the water cycle over China are explored using the Regional Climate Model system (RegCM) developed by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. Model performance is validated through comparing the simulation results with remote sensing data and gridded observations. The results show that RegCM can reasonably capture the spatial and seasonal variations in three dominant variables for the water cycle (i.e., precipitation, evapotranspiration, and runoff). Long-term projections of these three variables are developed by driving RegCM with boundary conditions of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Earth System Model under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). The results show that increased annual average precipitation and evapotranspiration can be found in most parts of the domain, while a smaller part of the domain is projected with increased runoff. Statistically significant increasing trends (at a significant level of 0.05) can be detected for annual precipitation and evapotranspiration, which are 0.02 and 0.01 mm/day per decade, respectively, under RCP4.5 and are both 0.03 mm/day per decade under RCP8.5. There is no significant trend in future annual runoff anomalies. The variations in the three variables mainly occur in the wet season, in which precipitation and evapotranspiration increase and runoff decreases. The projected changes in precipitation minus evapotranspiration are larger than those in runoff, implying a possible decrease in soil moisture.

Abstract:Characterizing and understanding the evolving water cycle in the Three-River Headwaters (TRH) region of the Tibetan Plateau, where data scarcity poses significant challenges to climate and atmospheric water cycle research, heavily depends on model simulations. However, advanced global climate models and reanalysis datasets frequently overestimate precipitation. To address this, we employ high-resolution (9 km) regional climate simulations (WRF9km) to examine atmospheric water cycle variables in the TRH region, comparing them with in-situ observations and ERA5 reanalysis. Our study demonstrates that WRF9km substantially reduces the overestimation of summer precipitation (by 24.0 %) and evapotranspiration (by 52.7 %) compared to ERA5, thereby improving its alignment with observational data. The reduced biases in precipitation are attributed to diminished moisture influx from the southern boundary and local evapotranspiration, coupled with increased moisture export from the eastern boundary. Summer precipitation recycling (PR) accounts for approximately 20 % of total precipitation in the TRH region. Despite divergent trends in PR between a water accounting model (WAM) and a bulk method, our findings support the reliability of WAM, indicating a slight decrease in summer PR (−0.4 %/10a for ERA5 and − 0.6 %/10a for WRF9km). While WRF9km accurately captures the spatial pattern of summer PR, ERA5 appears to overestimate it, likely due to biases in evapotranspiration and moisture inflow. In conclusion, WRF9km provides a more accurate representation of the atmospheric water cycle in the TRH region.
Contribution of Recycled and External Advected Moisture to Precipitation and Its Inter-annual Variation over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:In this study, we performed a high-resolution simulation using the Weather Research and Forecasting model, integrated with water vapor tracers, covering the years 2005-2019. Our objective was to obtain deeper insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics of external advected and local evaporative water vapor, and to elucidate their impact on precipitation patterns across the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Our findings underscore that a significant proportion of TP's precipitation originates from external advected water vapor, primarily entering through the western and southern boundaries. During summer, stronger zonal and meridional water vapor transport, driven by prevailing westerly winds and the Asian monsoon, significantly influences seasonal and spatial precipitation variations. Additionally, we observed that the inter-annual variation of precipitation is intricately linked to changes in the net water vapor influx, modulated by alterations in atmospheric circulation. We also analyze the Precipitation Recycling Ratio (PRR) which refers to the proportion of precipitation originated from local evaporative water vapor to the total precipitation, revealing distinctive elevation-dependent variations aligned with grassland distribution. Notably, PRR exhibits asynchronous shifts with precipitation at different timescales, potentially linked to soil moisture-precipitation feedback at intra-annual scales. Moreover, the investigation highlights that inter-annual variations in PRR are primarily linked to the inflow and outflow of water vapor as well as wind strength at 500 hPa, particularly prominent during colder seasons, while thermal factors carry comparable weight to dynamical factors in warmer seasons. Precipitation constitutes a vital component of the complex climatic conditions as well as the hydrological cycle over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as the "Asian Water Tower." Its distinct spatiotemporal variations, closely tied to the advected water vapor from external areas as well as evaporated within the TP, have direct impacts on local ecosystem and downstream water supply. These effects have profound socio-economic and environmental consequences. In this study, we found that temporal variations and spatial inhomogeneities in precipitation are primarily impacted by the advection of external water vapor, mainly through atmospheric circulation. Additionally, about 18.9% of the annual precipitation stems from local evaporation, as indicated by the precipitation recycling ratio, which reflects the strength of regional land-atmospheric interactions. Precipitation recycling processes are likely influenced by precipitation through soil moisture at intra-annual timescale, but are notably impacted by the inflow of water vapor and wind strength at inter-annual timescale. These results provide valuable insights into understanding precipitation variations at different spatiotemporal scales and contribute to more effective water resources management over the TP. Abstract:It is of importance to comprehensively investigate the spatial–temporal changes in potential evaporation patterns, which helps guide the long-term water resource allocation and irrigation managements. In this study, the Cloud model was adopted to quantify the average, uniformity, and stability of the annual potential evaporation in the Wei River Basin (WRB), a typical arid and semi-arid region in China, with the purpose of objectively and comprehensively characterizing its changing patterns. The cross wavelet analysis was then applied to explore the correlations between annual potential evaporation and Arctic Oscillation (AO)/El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with an aim to determine the possible causes of annual potential evaporation variations. Results indicated that: (1) the average of annual potential evaporation in the WRB first declined and then increased, and its stability also showed the same change characteristics, whilst its dispersion degree exhibited a decreasing trend, implying that potential evaporation has a smaller inter-annual variation; (2) the average of annual potential evaporation in the western basin was obviously smaller than that in the other areas, while its uniformity and stability in the Guanzhong plain and the Loess Plateau areas are larger than those in other areas, especially in the western basin where the uniformity and stability are the smallest; (3) both AO and ENSO exhibited strong correlations with annual potential evaporation variations, indicating that both AO and ENSO have played an important role in the annual potential evaporation variations in the WRB.

The Response of Cloud-Precipitation Recycling in China to Global Warming

Abstract:Cloud water is an important geophysical quantity that connects the hydrological and radiation characteristics of climate systems and plays an essential role in the global circulation of the atmosphere, water, and energy. However, compared to the contribution of water vapor to precipitation, the understanding of cloud-precipitation transformation and its climate feedback mechanism remains limited. Based on precipitation and temperature datasets of the National Meteorological Observatory and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite remote sensing products, the evolution characteristics of cloud water resources in China over the last twenty years of the 21st century were evaluated. Significant decreasing trends of −3.3 and −4.89 g/m2 decade−1 were found for both the liquid and ice water path. In humid areas with high precipitation, the cloud water path decreased fast. In semiarid areas with an annual precipitation ranging from 500–800 mm, the decreasing trend of the cloud water path was the lowest. The cloud-water period was calculated to represent the relative changes in clouds and precipitation. The national average cloud-water period in China is approximately 12.4 h, with obvious seasonal changes. Over the last 20 years, the cloud water path in dry regions decreased more slowly than that in wet regions, and the cloud-precipitation efficiency significantly increased, which narrowed the climate difference between the dry and wet regions. Finally, the mechanism of the cloud-water period evolution in the different regions were examined from the perspectives of the dynamic and thermal contributions, respectively. Due to the overall low upward moisture flux (UMF) in the dry region, the response of the cloud-water period to the lower tropospheric stability (LTS) mainly first increased and then decreased, which was the opposite in the wet region. The increase in cloud-precipitation efficiency in the dry region of Northwest China is accompanied by a continuous decrease in LTS. The different configurations of regional UMF and LTS play a crucial role in the evolution of cloud-precipitation, which can be used as a diagnostic basis to predict changes in the precipitation intensity to a certain extent.

Abstract:Terrestrial moisture recycling (TMR), characterized by a continuous process comprising green water flow (i.e., terrestrial evaporation), atmospheric transport, and terrestrial precipitation, functions as a nexus connecting hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere. During this process, land cover changes that impact green water flow can modify regional and remote precipitation patterns, potentially yielding far-reaching effects on water resources and human livelihoods. However, the comprehensive patterns of moisture recycling and transfer across eco-geographical regions in China, and their connection with various land cover types and vegetation transitions, remain insufficiently evaluated. This study employed an atmospheric moisture tracking model to quantify China's TMR pattern and evaluate the hydrological impacts of vegetation cover changes in China's ecosystems through TMR. The results demonstrate a significant moisture recycling ratio (52.4 %) and a considerable recycled volume (1.9 trillion m 3 /a) over China, characterized by pronounced moisture transfer from south to north and southwest to northeast. Among various land cover types, grasslands, croplands, and forests play pivotal supportive roles in China's TMR, contributing 738.8, 470.0, and 450.0 billion m 3 /a of precipitation in China, respectively. Moreover, the potential transition of vegetation between forest and cropland exerts the most significant and extensive impact on China's hydrological cycle. The conversion from forest to cropland leads to a total decrease of 44.7 billion m 3 /a in precipitation, whereas reforestation from cropland corresponds to a precipitation increase of 74.9 billion m 3 /a. This study provides a quantitative approach to comprehending the TMR pattern and its relationship with ecosystems, substantiating the significance of a comprehensive water management framework that considers the contribution of atmospheric moisture recycling and the impact of vegetation cover change.

Abstract:The atmospheric process of a hydrological cycle is an important factor in the regional hydrological cycle, which determines dry-wet conditions in the region. In recent years, droughts have occurred frequently and covered a wide area in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, so the study of the atmospheric hydrological cycle in this region is vitally important for drought control. Drivers of different factors were identified by utilizing a geographical detector, especially influences of human activities in the region. Finally, mechanisms of mutual feedback between a nature-society coupling system and the atmospheric hydrological cycle were analyzed. The results demonstrate that 1) The characteristics of atmospheric water resources in Inner Mongolia have high spatial differences and their distribution are uneven. 2) The precipitation conversion efficiency in the region is dominated by the natural system, and the driving action of the nature-society coupling system formed after combining with the social system is stronger. The dominant drivers of the precipitation conversion efficiency in each subregion after partition are related to the ecological stability thereof. This study provides a scientific basis for identifying driving mechanisms of and preventing disasters in the atmospheric process of the water vapor cycle in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Abstract:Soil moisture is an important factor affecting the change of land surface hydrological processes and the distribution of material and energy exchanges between the land and atmosphere and vegetation's temporal and spatial distributions, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. This paper focuses on soil moisture features across Northwest China, the core region of the Silk Road Economic Belt. Six soil moisture datasets from the period 1981–2020 were employed, which included ERA5 (the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Atmospheric Reanalysis 5), ESA-CCI (European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative), GLDAS (Global Land Data Assimilation System), MERRA-2 (The Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2), RSSSM (A Remote Sensing-based global 10-day resolution Surface Soil Moisture dataset), and SSM-Feng (Regional multimodal fusion of surface soil moisture data in China). The temporal and spatial variation of the linear trend and abrupt change characteristics at seasonal and annual scale were explored. The results are as follows: 1) ESA-CCI, GLDAS, and MERRA-2 showed a slow increase in annual soil moisture tendency at a rate of less than 0.001 m 3 /m 3 /year, while ERA5 and SSM-Feng showed a significant decreasing linear trend at a rate of 1.31 × 10 −4 m 3 /m 3 /year and 1.01 × 10 −4 m 3 /m 3 /year ( p < 0.05 ), respectively. 2) In autumn and winter, only GLDAS and MERRA-2 showed significant increasing trends. In the growing season (i.e., from April to October), the soil moisture of ESA-CCI, GLDAS, and MERRA-2 significantly increased at the rates of 3.29 × 10 −4 m 3 /m 3 /year, 3.30 × 10 −4 m 3 /m 3 /year, and 6.64 × 10 −4 m 3 /m 3 /year ( p < 0.05 ), respectively. 3) ERA5 and ESA-CCI have frequent abrupt changes in 1984, 1987, and 2006 for ERA5, 2010–2012 and 2019–2020 for ESA-CCI. 4) In terms of spatial variations, most datasets show that soil moisture has increased across most regions. The ERA5, ESA-CCI, GLDAS, MERRA-2, and SSM-Feng datasets show decreased soil moisture in the Tarim Basin. The conclusions of this study deepen the understanding of temporal and spatial variation in soil moisture in arid areas of Northwest China. Through these conclusions, a certain theoretical basis can be provided for the complex water cycle process in the arid region.

Effects of Potential Large-Scale Irrigation on Regional Precipitation in Northwest China

Abstract:Understanding the impact of irrigation on the spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation is important for the ecological stability of the arid region of Northwest China (NWC). In this study, the global climate model MPI-ESM-MR is utilized to provide the initial and lateral boundary conditions for the regional climate model RegCM4, enabling the simulation of the long-term climate of the arid NWC region under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). The study focuses on analyzing the differences in the spatiotemporal distribution, intensity, and frequency of precipitation before and after irrigation. Furthermore, the study explores the primary factors influencing changes in the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of precipitation in the irrigation district and its downwind region. The results indicate that RegCM4 performs well in simulating the climatology and diurnal cycle of precipitation in the NWC, particularly excelling during the summer. Large-scale irrigation significantly impacts the structure of summer precipitation, leading to a notable increase in convective precipitation near the irrigation district and surrounding mountain ranges. Anomalous cyclonic circulation and enhanced vertical velocity enhancement provide dynamic conditions for increased precipitation in the irrigation district and surrounding mountainous regions. Furthermore, the evaporation of water vapor resulting from large-scale irrigation serves as an additional source of moisture, contributing to increased precipitation in the irrigation district and its downwind region. Due to the difference in climatic conditions between the western and eastern regions around the irrigated areas, the summer extreme precipitation in the west predominantly increases. At the same time, in the east, it predominantly decreases due to irrigation. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms through which agricultural irrigation influences precipitation in the arid region of the NWC, thereby providing scientific evidence for the sustainable utilization of water resources in the region.

Abstract:Using the ERA-5 monthly reanalysis data and precipitation observations, this paper analyses the interdacal dry-wet transition and its mechanism in the Tarim Basin(TB) during summer. From the long-term perspective(1961–2021), TB is in a trend of "wet in the west and dry in the east". By taking a nine-year moving average of the precipitation(PRE), the research period is divided into three subperiods: P1(1961–1987), P2(1988–2009) and P3(2010−2021). From P1 to P3, the regional averaged Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI) demonstrates an interdecadal turning of "wetting to drying". During P2(1988–2009), the dynamic component of water vapor increases the zonal moisture transport, causing a slight increase in PRE. The potential evapotranspiration(PET) is weakened by the increase in PRE and relative humidity(RH), the decrease in 2-m temperature(T2m) and 10-m wind speed(10UV), resulting in the humidification of the TB. In the P3(2010–2021), the non-linear component of water vapor increases moisture convergence in the western TB, causing a significant increase in PRE. However, the decrease in RH, accompanied by increases in T2m and UV10, results in a rapid increase in PET. The TB gets dry. The South Asian high(SAH) develops southeastward, guiding more water vapor transport from the upstream westerly and the tropical Indian Ocean. The Western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH) extends northwestward, increasing water vapor convergence in the western TB. The main reason for the increased precipitation changes from increased water vapor advection to enhanced water vapor convergence. The differences in PRE formation and T2m amplitude cause the interdecadal change in RH, deriving an interdecadal transition of wet and dry in the TB. Our findings may deepen the understanding of climate change, and provide a scientific support for ecological development, and global climate governance in arid/semi-arid regions.

Drying and Wetting Trends and Vegetation Covariations in the Drylands of China

Abstract:The semi-arid and arid drylands of China, which are located in the inland region of Eurasia, have experienced rapid climate change. Some regions in particular, have shown upward trends in the observational records of precipitation. However, there is more to drying and wetting than just changes in precipitation which still have large uncertainties. Coherent results, however, can be obtained, at the regional scale, with the use of multiple indices as shown in the recent literature. We divided the drylands of China into three sub-regions, i.e., a semi-arid (SA), an eastern-arid (EA) and a western-arid (WA) region. Precipitation from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Climatic Research Unit (CRU), statistical and physical drought indices, including the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), self-calibrating PDSI (sc_PDSI), Root zone soil moisture (Root_sm) and Surface soil moisture (Surf_sm) from Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used to identify temporal and spatial patterns in drying and wetting. Data were selected from 1982–2012, in line with the availability of the remotely sensed vegetation data. Results show that the drylands of China exhibits a pattern of wetting in the west and drying in the east. The semi-arid region in the east is becoming drier and the drought area is increasing, with the values of CMA_P, CRU_P, PDSI, sc_PDSI, SPEI-01,SPEI-06, SPEI-12, Root_sm, Surf_sm at −1.064 mm yr−1, −0.834 mm yr−1, −0.050 yr−1 (p < 0.1), −0.174 yr−1 (p < 0.1), −0.014 yr−1, −0.06, −0.021 (p < 0.1), −0.257×10−3 m3 m−3 yr−1, −0.024×10−3 m3 m−3 yr−1, respectively. The arid region generally exhibits a wetting trend, while the area in drought declines only in the western arid region, but not in the eastern arid part. In the semi-arid region, growing season (May to September) NDVI is significantly correlated (p < 0.1) with eight out of nine indicators. We show in this study that the semi-arid region needs more study to protect the vegetation ecosystem and the water resources.

Understanding the spatiotemporal variations of VPD and SM is essential for exploring vegetation dynamics and ecosystem changes. However, our current understanding of the simultaneous variations of VPD and SM within specific regions remains limited. This study utilized Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) methods to analyze the spatiotemporal variability of VPD, surface SM (SM surf ), and root-zone SM (SM root ), respectively. We then investigated the synchronous and asynchronous variations of VPD and SM and examined their relationships with climatic factors. New hydrologic insights for the region From 1980–2020, VPD exhibited a significant upward trend across China and in various climate zones, indicating an increase in atmospheric dryness. However, the trends of SM surf and SM root showed a slight upward trend across China but divergent patterns in different climate zones. In summary, approximately 43% of China experiences a significant simultaneous increase in both VPD and SM, mainly in semi-arid and arid regions. Conversely, about 4% of China shows contrasting changes in VPD and SM, primarily in humid tropical and subtropical regions. These findings enhance our understanding of VPD and SM patterns in various climates, emphasizing the significance of soil drought in humid and semi-humid regions.

Abstract:Northwest China (NWC), is characterized by its arid and semi-arid environment, and exhibits high sensitivity to precipitation variations. Recent research indicates a wetting tendency over NWC, yet quantifying its moisture source remains challenging. Here, employing a 40 year simulation with Community Atmosphere Model version 5.1 (CAM5.1) coupled to an atmospheric water tracer algorithm, we ascertain that the dominant source of summer moisture over NWC are from terrestrial sources (82% of vapor and 77% of precipitation), i.e. from local evaporation, North Asia (NA), Europe (EUP), the southern Tibetan Plateau (STP), and southeastern China (SEC), rather than oceanic sources. Favorable synoptic patterns over NWC enhance the precipitation-conversion efficiency from the southeasterly airflow transport (STP and SEC) compared to northwesterly airflow (NA and EUP). We also find that the fluctuations in precipitation over NWC, manifesting as alternating dry and wet summers, are primarily driven by increased moisture contributions from direct inputs from NA and re-evaporation transport from STP. Our study indicates that moisture variability in inland is predominantly driven by nearby terrestrial sources and underscores the complex mechanisms of terrestrial moisture transport.

Abstract:Study region Yangtze River Basin (YRB), the longest river in Asia, holds ∼40% of the China's population and GDP. Study focus As climate warms, the amount of water vapor increases in the atmosphere which prompting alterations in the regional water cycle and intensifying the occurrence of precipitation extremes. Extensive research has been conducted in the YRB on its terrestrial water sources, however, insufficient attention has been given to its atmospheric water resources. Thus, this study aims to provide a comprehensive investigation into the dynamics of atmospheric water (AW) over the YRB, covering both historical (1979–2022) and future (2023–2099) periods. New hydrological insights for the region Our results reveal a declining trend in atmospheric water content (AWC) across the middle to western YRB before approximately 2011 (1979–2010). After this point (2011–2022), the trends suddenly reverse to a significant increase in nearly all the sub-basins within the YRB. This is closely linked to the enhancement of atmospheric water transport (AWT) from the southwestern directions. The historical increasing trends in AWC across the YRB will continue in the future (2023–2099). However, the future raising trends are expected to decelerate (accelerate) from the near term to the far term under SSP1–2.6/SSP2–4.5 (SSP5–8.5). The AWT to the YRB from the southwestern directions will also maintain its raising trends in the future.

Abstract:Dryland precipitation depends on upwind and local moisture sources via moisture recycling. How upwind moisture variations affect interannual variations of downwind precipitation and vegetation in China's drylands remains unclear. We used high‐resolution moisture tracking data sets and found terrestrial moisture (93%) was the dominant moisture source for China's drylands, especially from drylands themselves (46%). In most dryland grids, we observed strong correlations between precipitation and upwind moisture sources from 2003 to 2022 (median r = 0.55), with a more significant effect in drier areas. These demonstrated the upwind moisture control on interannual variations of dryland precipitation, in which internal moisture from drylands exceeds the influence of external terrestrial sources. The upwind moisture variations, especially the recycled moisture of drylands, propagate to influence downwind vegetation greenness in precipitation‐sensitive dryland areas. Our findings revealed that upwind moisture variations induced by climate or land‐cover changes have important implications for water and food security in China's drylands.

Spatiotemporal variation of the major meteorological elements in an agricultural region: A case study of Linyi City, Northern China

Abstract:Evaporation is a key element of the water and energy cycle and is essential in determining the spatial and temporal variations of meteorological elements. In particular, evaporation is crucial for thoroughly understanding the climate variations of a region. In this study, we discussed evaporation, precipitation, and temperature by adopting Linyi City in Shandong Province, China, which is an important agricultural region, as a research case. Linear regression analysis, the empirical orthogonal decomposition function, and the Morlet wavelet function were used to reveal the trends, spatiotemporal modes, and multi-time scale characteristics of the three climate factors and provide a theoretical basis for the efficient use of climate resources in the future development of regional agriculture. Results showed that the precipitation (2.09 mm/a) and temperature (0.04 °C/a) in Linyi City exhibited a synchronous growth trend. Conversely, evaporation (−6.47 mm/a) showed a decreasing trend and the evaporation paradox because of the considerable decrease in evaporation energy. Regional development of water-consuming agriculture in consideration of global warming is a key point for improving water use efficiency in Linyi City. In terms of spatial distribution, precipitation was dominated by the first mode wherein low precipitation was observed at the early stage, and high precipitation occurred at the late stage. The first mode was supplemented by the second mode wherein an inverse phase change occurred in the southeast-northwest direction. Large interannual fluctuations were observed only in Yinan County. Temperature exhibited a pattern of warming change with high homogeneity. Evaporation demonstrated obvious heterogeneity and was dominated by two major modes, and the difference in evaporation between Junan County and the other regions of Linyi City was large. Therefore, the local regional climate changes in Yinan and Junan should be given attention. All three meteorological elements showed interannual and interdecadal variations in the short (5 a), medium (16 a), and long (25 a) terms, with precipitation, temperature, and evaporation dominated by 16 a, 24 a, and 31 a, respectively. In the short-term future, the regional precipitation and temperature in Linyi will experience decrements that are above the multiyear average, and evaporation will increase to above the multiyear average. Given the changing trends of precipitation, temperature, and evaporation, urgent requirements for the regional development of efficient water-saving irrigation and the promotion of digital agriculture should be proposed.

Abstract:In the context of global warming, comprehending the dynamics of terrestrial water storage (TWS) and its responses to natural and anthropogenic factors is paramount for hydrological research and the management of water resources in China. This study utilized GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment)/GRACE-Follow On (GRACE-FO) satellite data to analyze terrestrial water storage across nine basins in China from 2005 to 2020 at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Subsequently, employing a Geographic detector model, potential influencing factors were identified, and an enhanced Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method was proposed for attributing changes in TWS in China. The findings reveal a consistent declining trend in TWS based on GRACE/GRACE-FO data across different temporal scales, with the most pronounced decreases observed in August and September. Geographic Detector analysis unveils significant interactions among various environmental factors, with climate variables playing a pivotal role in modulating hydrological characteristics of major river basins, where rising temperatures can exacerbate the severity of precipitation events, thus increasing the risk of floods and droughts. Moreover, analysis of the primary influencing factors indicates significant impacts of population density and topography on water resources in the southeastern and southwestern regions, particularly amidst increasing human activities and urbanization expansion. The results of this study are crucial for comprehending the dynamic changes and mechanisms of TWS in China, as well as for formulating water resource management strategies.
