Abstract:To study the responses of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), a commercially important tree species in Europe, to future increases in atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]), we grew saplings for 4 years in the ground in open-top chambers in ambient or ambient + 400 micromol mol(-1) CO2, without supplemental addition of nutrients and water. Carbon (C) budgets were developed for trees in both CO2 treatments based on productivity and biomass data obtained from destructive harvests at the end of the third and fourth years of treatment, and simulations of annual gross photosynthesis (P(tot)) and maintenance respiration by the model MAESTRA. Simulated P(tot) was enhanced by elevated [CO2], despite significant down-regulation of photosynthetic capacity. The subsequent increase in C uptake was allocated primarily to tissues with limited longevity (needles and fine roots), which explains why the measured annual increment in woody biomass did not differ between CO2 treatments. Thus, our results suggest that accelerated stem growth only occurs in the first 2 years in the presence of elevated [CO2] and that forest rotations will not be shortened significantly in response to increasing [CO2]. In elevated [CO2], a higher proportion of available C was allocated below ground, resulting in altered biomass distribution patterns. In trees of equal size, measured ratios of fine root/needle biomass and belowground/aboveground biomass were almost twice as large in the elevated [CO2] treatment. Although there are uncertainties in scaling from saplings to mature canopies, the data indicate that, in nutrient-limited Scots pine forests, elevated [CO2] is unlikely to accelerate tree growth significantly, but is likely to increase C inputs to soil.

Abstract:Despite considerable experimental effort, the physiological mechanisms governing temperate tree species' water and carbon dynamics before the onset of the growing period remain poorly understood. We applied 2H‐enriched water during winter dormancy to the soil of four potted European tree species. After 8 weeks of chilling, hydrogen isotopes in stem, twig and bud water were measured six times during 2 consecutive weeks of forcing conditions (Experiment 1). Additionally, we pulse‐labelled above‐ground plant tissues using 2H‐enriched water vapour and 13C‐enriched CO2 7 days after exposure to forcing conditions to trace atmospheric water and carbon uptake (Experiment 2). Experiment 1 revealed soil water incorporation into the above‐ground organs of all species during the chilling phase and significant species‐specific differences in water allocation during the forcing conditions, which we attributed to differences in structural traits. Experiment 2 illustrated water vapour incorporation into all above‐ground tissue of all species. However, the incorporation of carbon was found for evergreen saplings only. Our results suggest that temperate trees take up and reallocate soil water and absorb atmospheric water to maintain sufficient above‐ground tissue hydration during winter. Therefore, our findings provide new insights into the water allocation dynamics of temperate trees during early spring.

Dissolved organic carbon concentrations in four Norway spruce stands of different ages

Abstract:Boreal forests are increasing in age partly due to reduced logging and efficient wildfire control. As a result, they also stock more carbon. Whether increased forest C stock causes greater production of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is uncertain. DOC in bulk precipitation, throughfall and soil water was studied in 10-, 30-, 60- and 120-year-old stands of Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) DOC concentrations in throughfall and O horizon soil water followed the order 10 < 30 < 60 = 120 and 10 = 30 < 120 < 60, respectively. DOC fluxes followed the order 10 = 30 < 60 = 120 in throughfall, while no significant difference between stands was found for O horizon soil water. Above-ground tree litter varied according to 10 < 30 < 60 = 120, a pattern identical to that for DOC concentrations in throughfall and resembling but not identical to that for DOC concentrations in O horizon soil water. This indicates additional sources for DOC in soil water. Seasonality in DOC concentrations was observed at the base of the O horizon, and seasonality in DOC fluxes in both throughfall and O horizon soil water. Our results suggest differences in the polarity of DOC between the 10-year stand and the others, which we interpret as reflecting the lack of grown trees and possibly the different vegetation on the 10-year stand.
A Degradation-Informed Battery-Swapping Policy for Fleets of Electric or Hybrid-Electric Vehicles

Abstract:Motivated by high oil prices, several large fleet companies initiated future plans to hybridize their fleets to establish immunity of their optimized business models against severe oil price fluctuations, and adhere to increasing awareness of environmentally friendly solutions. The hybridization projects increased maintenance costs especially for costly and degradable components such as Li-ion batteries. This paper introduces a degradation-based resource allocation policy to optimally utilize batteries on fleet level. The policy, denoted as degradation-based swapping optimization, incorporates optimal implementation of swapping and substitution actions throughout a plan of finite-time horizon to minimize projected maintenance costs. The swapping action refers to the interchange in the placement of two batteries within a fleet. The substitution action refers to the replacement of degraded batteries with new ones. The policy takes advantage of the different degradation rates of the state of health of the batteries because of different loading conditions, achieving optimal placement at different time intervals throughout the plan horizon. A mathematical model for the policy is provided. The optimization of the generated model is studied through several algorithms. Numerical results for sample problems are obtained to illustrate the capability of the proposed policy in establishing substantial savings in the projected maintenance costs compared to other policies.

Abstract:'Bomb' 14C ages in trees indicate the time elapsed between carbon fixation into nonstructural carbon (NSC) and its use for metabolism and growth. It remains unknown why newly grown aboveground tissues have a narrow range of young 14C-ages, while fine root ages can span decades. We measured 14C in tissues of two coniferous species along an alpine treeline ecotone and used a mixing model to estimate the fraction of NSC that is metabolically active. We expected that greater growth limitation higher in the ecotone would supply more freshly fixed NSC to respiration, active NSC, carbohydrates, and roots, resulting in younger 14C-ages of NSC used to grow tissues. Results confirmed an increase in fresh NSC supply with elevation. Needle and branch growth was supported by young NSC (< 2 yr) with little elevation influence, while root growth was supported by older NSC that declined from 10 to 6 yr with elevation. Massive allocation of fresh NSC to needles and branches could explain their young 14C-ages. Variable fine root 14C-ages reflect tree C status, with older ages when aboveground growth limits the contribution of new C belowground, while young ages represent greater delivery of fresh NSC to roots.

Phenology explains different storage remobilization in two congeneric temperate tree species with contrasting leaf habit

Abstract:The dependence of trees on carbon and nutrient storage is critical to predicting the forest vulnerability under climate change, but whether evergreen and deciduous species differ in their use and allocation of stored resources during spring phenology is unclear. Using a high temporal resolution, we evaluated the role of spring phenology and shoot growth as determinants of the carbon and nutrient storage dynamics in contrasting leaf habits. We recorded the phenology and shoot elongation and determined the concentrations of total non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), starch, soluble carbohydrates, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in buds, expanding shoots and previously formed shoots of two sympatric Nothofagus species with contrasting leaf habit. Species reached similar shoot lengths, though shoot expansion started 35 days earlier and lasted c. 40 days more in the deciduous species. Thus, although the deciduous species had a relatively constant shoot growth rate, the evergreen species experienced a conspicuous growth peak for c. 20 days. In the evergreen species, the greatest decreases in NSC concentrations of previously formed shoots and leaves coincided with the maximum shoot expansion rate and fruit filling, with minimums of 63 and 65% relative to values at bud dormancy, respectively. In contrast, minimum NSC concentrations of the previously formed shoots of the deciduous species were only 73% and occurred prior to the initiation of shoot expansion. Bud N and P concentrations increased during budbreak, whereas previously formed shoots generally did not decrease their nutrient concentrations. Late spring phenology and overlapping of phenophases contributed to the greater dependence on storage of proximal tissues in the studied evergreen compared with deciduous species, suggesting that phenology is a key determinant of the contrasting patterns of storage use in evergreen and deciduous species.
Seasonal variations drive short-term dynamics and partitioning of recently assimilated carbon in the foliage of adult beech and pine

Abstract:13 CO2 pulse-labelling experiments were performed in situ on adult beeches (Fagus sylvatica) and pines (Pinus pinaster) at different phenological stages to study seasonal and interspecific short-term dynamics and partitioning of recently assimilated carbon (C) in leaves. Polar fraction (PF, including soluble sugars, amino acids and organic acids) and starch were purified from foliage sampled during a 10-d chase period. C contents, isotopic compositions and 13 C dynamics parameters were determined in bulk foliage, PF and starch. Decrease in 13 C amount in bulk foliage followed a two-pool exponential model highlighting 13 C partitioning between 'mobile' and 'stable' pools, the relative proportion of the latter being maximal in beech leaves in May. Early in the growing season, new foliage acted as a strong C sink in both species, but although young leaves and needles were already photosynthesizing, the latter were still supplied with previous-year needle photosynthates 2 months after budburst. Mean 13 C residence times (MRT) were minimal in summer, indicating fast photosynthate export to supply perennial organ growth in both species. In late summer, MRT differed between senescing beech leaves and overwintering pine needles. Seasonal variations of 13 C partitioning and dynamics in field-grown tree foliage are closely linked to phenological differences between deciduous and evergreen trees.
Seasonal dynamics of non-structural carbon pools and their relationship to growth in two boreal conifer tree species.

Abstract:In an attempt to comprehensively study the dynamics of non-structural carbon compounds (NCC), we measured the seasonal changes of soluble sugars, starch, lipids, and sugar alcohols in the leaves, branches, stem, and roots of the fast-growing Pinus contorta (pine) and slow-growing Picea glauca (spruce) trees growing in a boreal climate. In addition to measuring seasonal concentrations of these compounds, the relative contribution of these compounds to the total NCC pool within organs of trees (~8 m tall) was estimated and compared across different phenological and growth stages. Both species showed large seasonal shifts from starch to sugars from spring to fall in nearly all organs and tissues; most likely an adaptation to the cold winters. For both species the total fluctuation of sugar + starch across the year (i.e., the difference between the minimum and maximum observed across collection times) was estimated to be between 1.6 kg and 1.8 kg for all NCCs. The fluctuation, however, was 1.40 times greater than the minimum reserves in pine while only 0.72 times the minimum reserves in spruce. By tissue type, NCC fluctuations were greatest in the roots of both species. Roots showed a large build-up of reserves in late spring, but these reserves were depleted over summer and fall. Storage reserves in needles and branches declined over the summer and this decline may be linked to the sink strength of the stem during diameter growth. Some notable highlights of this holistic study: a late winter build-up of sugars in the stem xylem of both species but especially spruce; an increase in sugar alcohols in the bark of spruce in very late winter which could indicate mobilization to support early growth in spring; high lipid reserves in the bark of pine, that appeared not to be impacted by seasonal changes between summer and winter. Collectively, these observations point towards a more conservative NCC reserve strategy in spruce compared to pine which is consistent with its stress tolerance and greater longevity.

Abstract:Abstract Background Carbon isotope data from conifer trees play an important role in research on the boreal forest carbon reservoir in the global carbon cycle. Carbon isotopes are routinely used to study interactions between the environment and tree growth. Moreover, carbon isotopes became an essential tool for the evaluation of carbon assimilation and transport from needles into reserve pools, as well as the allocation of stored assimilates within a tree. The successful application and interpretation of carbon isotopes rely on the coherence of isotopic fractionation modeling. This study employs a new Carbon Metabolism Oscillatory Model (CMOM) to interpret the experimental data sets on metabolic seasonal dynamics of 13 C/ 12 C and 18 O/ 16 O ratios measured in twig components of Scots pine growing in southern Siberia (Russia). Results The dynamics of carbon isotopic variables were studied in components of Pinus sylvestris L. in light and in dark chambers during the vegetation period from 14 June to 28 July 2006. At the beginning of this period water-soluble organic matter, mostly labile sugars (including sucrose as the main component) and newly formed bulk needle material, displayed relatively “light” δ 13 C values (depletion in 13 C). Then, 13 C content increased again with noticeable “depletion” events in the middle of the growth period. A gradual 13 C accumulation took place in the second half of the vegetation period. Similar effects were observed both in the light and in the dark with some temporal shifts. Environmental factors did not influence the δ 13 C values. A gradual 12 C-depletion effect was noticed in needles of the previous year. The δ 13 C values of sucrose and proteins from needle biomass altered independently from each other in the light chamber. A distinct negative correlation between δ 13 C and δ 18 O values was revealed for all studied variables. Conclusions The abrupt 13 C depletion recorded by all tested trees for the period from June to July provides clear evidence of the transition from the dominant role of reserve carbohydrate pool (RCP) during the first half of the growth season to the preferable current year carbohydrate pool (CCP) consumption by new needles during its second half. The investigation of the isotopic signatures of Pinus sylvestris L. emphasizes the pivotal role of the intra-seasonal dynamics in carbon metabolism through the transport of assimilates from autotrophic (needles) to heterotrophic (twigs) organs of the studied trees. This provides an explanation for changes of carbon isotopic values observed within the growth season. The CMOM-based results support the hypothesis of the integration of three carbohydrate pools by photosynthesizing cells. The fluctuations of the carbon isotope ratios in different carbohydrate pools underlie various physiological processes in the tree metabolism. The possible mechanisms and pathways of formation of these carbohydrate pools are further discussed. Hence, CMOM provides a reasonable explanation for the absence of the impact of environmental conditions on the needle isotopic variables, the 12 C-depletion effects and the use of RCP in needles. The model explains the negative connections between δ 13 C and δ 18 O values in all studied variables.

Abstract:Photosynthesis is not entirely synchronized with carbon sinks, implying that trees are capable of storing non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), such as soluble sugars and starch. These storages provide a buffer between carbohydrate supply and demand and also allow trees to resist drought through osmoregulation. However, estimates of the total pool size and seasonal dynamics of the NSC storage of mature trees are still rare. Part of NSC is allocated outside roots, mainly to symbiotic, root-associated mycorrhizal fungi. The quantity and dynamics of this allocation are difficult to estimate in field conditions due to the close interaction between the symbionts. The aims of this study were to (1) determine the temporal development of NSC concentrations in tree organs, (2) upscale the storage compounds to whole-tree level and (3) analyse the significance of NSC allocation to belowground symbionts as part of the carbon balance in mature pines in a boreal Scots pine stand in southern Finland. We took samples every 2–4 weeks of needles, fine roots, stem wood, shoot wood and phloem from 1 to 3 trees in 2015. Concentrations of soluble sugars and starch were analyzed from the samples and upscaled to tree level. For quantifying the third aim, we used a whole-tree carbon balance model CASSIA that incorporates daily photosynthesis, respiration and organ-specific growth as functions of environmental factors. In this study, we included the allocation to belowground symbionts as an additional carbon sink and scaled the flux using the NSC pool over the whole tree. We observed that organ-specific NSC concentrations were highest in phloem, needles and fine roots. Total NSC increased in spring, peaked during mid-summer and decreased again in autumn without any notable decrease during the most intensive growth period at midsummer. In the model analysis, 6% of yearly photosynthesis was allocated to the root-associated symbionts. The study highlights the applicability of the carbon balance approach in evaluating the importance of processes that cannot yet be directly measured.

Abstract:A theory on the dynamics of a driven dissipative multilevel quantum system is applied to investigate relaxation and decoherence induced by an external circuit of a resonantly driven SQUID flux qubit. It is shown that in the case of weak field and weak damping the numerical and analytical results are in excellent agreement. It is also shown that the SQUID qubit can be optimized by varying external circuit parameters.
Carbon Source Reduction Postpones Autumn Leaf Senescence in a Widespread Deciduous Tree

Abstract:The growing-season length of temperate and boreal trees has a strong effect on the global carbon cycle. Yet, a poor understanding of the drivers of phenological processes, such as autumn leaf senescence in deciduous trees, limits our capacity to estimate growing-season lengths under climate change. While temperature has been shown to be an important driver of autumn leaf senescence, carbon source–sink dynamics have been proposed as a mechanism that could help explain variation of this important process. According to the carbon sink limitation hypothesis, senescence is regulated by the interplay between plant carbon source and sink dynamics, so that senescence occurs later upon low carbon inputs (source) and earlier upon low carbon demand (sink). Here, we manipulated carbon source–sink dynamics in birch saplings ( Betula pendula ) to test the relevance of carbon sink limitation for autumn leaf senescence and photosynthetic decline in a widespread deciduous tree. Specifically, we conducted a gradient of leaf and bud removal treatments and monitored the effects on autumnal declines in net photosynthesis and the timing of leaf senescence. In line with the carbon sink limitation hypothesis, we observed that leaf removal tended to increase total leaf-level autumn photosynthesis and delayed the timing of senescence. Conversely, we did not observe an effect of bud removal on either photosynthesis or senescence, which was likely caused by the fact that our bud removal treatment did not considerably affect the plant carbon sink. While we cannot fully rule out that the observed effect of leaf removal was influenced by possible treatment-level differences in leaf age or soil resource availability, our results provide support for the hypothesis of carbon sink limitation as a driver of growing-season length and move the scientific field closer to narrowing the uncertainty in climate change predictions.

Integrating Constrained Cellular Automata Models, GIS and Decision Support Tools for Urban Planning

Abstract:In this paper we present a Decision Support System developed to assist urban planners and policy makers to simulate and analyse alternative urban layouts, land uses, and growth patterns. The core of the system is a modelli ng and simulation shell allowing the user to specify Constrained Cellular Automata models of urban and regional systems. Unlike conventional Cellular Automata, these are defined with a relatively large neighbourhood and a large number of states, representing both human and natural land-uses. They forecast changes in land-use for small parcels on the basis of both the activities present in the local neighbourhood and the specific characteristics of the parcels themselves. Since each parcel affects every other within its neighbourhood, complex dynamics emerge. More traditional dynamic models --ideally spatial interaction based models-control the overall dynamics of the cellular automata. In the DSS, a custom-built GIS is integrated in the modelli ng shell . It stores the detailed geographical characteristics and feeds them into the model at the cellular level as required. Thus the approach permits the straightforward integration of physical, environmental, technical and institutional factors into a single dynamic socio-economic model at a high level of spatial detail . By way of ill ustration, we report applications of the models to both intra-urban and inter-urban cases, and examine specifically the case where the cellular model is forced by means of a regionalised macro-model.
Diversity and functional differentiation of renewal buds in temperate herbaceous plants

Abstract:Spring regrowth in temperate perennials relies on renewal buds, which form a key component in the shoot growth cycle. Still, we possess almost no information on these renewal buds, which is becoming more pressing with the current climate change. Most existing studies concentrated on easy-to-study aboveground buds of woody plants, whose morphology has largely been linked to frost protection. It is not clear to what extent these findings apply also to herbaceous species. We therefore examined protective traits and preformation of winter renewal buds in 379 species of temperate herbs, and tested how these traits are distributed across the phylogeny and related to other bud bank and whole-plant traits. We identified a major gradient from few, large, highly preformed, scale-covered buds associated with larger belowground storage organs deep in the soil, to small, numerous, less preformed, and naked buds near the soil surface. Belowground renewal buds of temperate herbs show several distinct strategies for winter survival and spring regrowth that might affect their response to changing winter and early spring conditions. Renewal bud traits are driven not only by frost protection but also by protection of the apical meristem from mechanical disturbance in the soil.
Whole-tree dynamics of non-structural carbohydrate and nitrogen pools across different seasons and in response to girdling in two temperate trees

Abstract:Despite extensive research on the seasonal dynamics of non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) and nitrogen (N) concentrations, the size and relative contributions of NSC and N pools across different tree organs are not well understood. We have measured the changes in NSC and N concentrations in leaves, branches, stems and all root branch orders at monthly intervals in control and girdled trees of larch ( Larix gmelinii ) and ash ( Fraxinus mandshurica ). The biomass of each plant compartment was also determined to calculate the size of the NSC and N pools. In both species, 13–37 % of the NSC and N pools were mobilized at the beginning of the growing season. Among the mobilized pools, stems and non-absorptive roots (branch orders 4–9) acted as the largest NSC sources in larch and ash, respectively, while branches served as the largest N source in both species. After stem girdling, 22 and 50 % of the root NSC stores in larch and ash, respectively, were mobilized to maintain root activities during the growing season. Tree mortality was observed 1 year after girdling, at which time there was still an abundant NSC pool in the roots. We conclude that (1) different storage organs differ in their contribution to new tissue growth at the beginning of the growing season and that those storage organs holding higher fractions of the NSC or N pool are not necessarily those which mobilize more NSC or N; (2) tree growth may not be limited by carbon (C) availability; (3) C storage in non-absorptive roots plays an important role in maintaining tree survival after the termination of photosynthate flow from aboveground sources.

Abstract:Key messageA 6–9 month backward time shift of the carbon uptake gave the highest correlation between annual biomass increment and carbon uptake in this old even aged forest.AbstractPlants’ carbon uptake and allocation to different biomass compartments is an important process for both wood production and climate mitigation. Measurements of the net ecosystem carbon dioxide exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere provide insights into the processes of photosynthesis, respiration and accumulation of carbon over time, and the increase in woody biomass can be assessed by allometric functions based on stem diameter measurements. The fraction of carbon allocated to radial stem growth varies over time, and a lag between carbon uptake and growth can be expected. The dynamics of non-structural carbohydrates and autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration are key mechanisms for understanding this lag effect. In this study, a 9-year record of carbon flux and tree-ring data from Norunda, Sweden was used to investigate the relationship between net and gross carbon uptake and carbon allocated to growth. The flux data were aggregated to monthly sums. When full 12-month periods of accumulated carbon exchange were successively shifted backwards in time, the highest correlation was found with a 6–9 month shift, showing that a large part of the previous growing season was important for explaining the biomass increment of the following year.

Abstract:Significance Forest decline due to climate change is increasing worldwide. Accurate forecasting of forest dynamics requires a mechanistic understanding of carbon allocation strategies that can link molecular process regulation to whole-tree responses. However, dedicated transdisciplinary investigations spanning these scales are lacking. Here we used a unique experimental platform to manipulate the whole-tree carbon balance and combine metabolic flux measurements with transcriptional information to reveal tree resource allocation priorities under reduced carbon supply. In contrast to current understanding and model implementations, we show that trees prioritize carbon allocation to storage and mobilization of storage to support respiration rather than growth to ensure immediate and future survival under negative carbon balance that may occur during critical periods of stress.

Abstract:Carbon (C) assimilation can be severely impaired during periods of environmental stress like drought or defoliation, making trees heavily dependent on the use of C reserve pools for survival; yet, dynamics of reserve use during periods of reduced C supply are still poorly understood. We used stem girdling in mature poplar trees (Populus tremula L. hybrids), a lipid-storing species, to permanently interrupt phloem C transport and induced C shortage in the isolated stem section below the girdle and monitored metabolic activity during three campaigns in the growing seasons of 2018, 2019, and 2021. We measured respiratory fluxes (CO2 and O2), NSC concentration, the respiratory substrate (based on isotopic analysis and CO2/O2 ratio) and the age of the respiratory substrate (based on radiocarbon analysis). Our study shows that poplar trees can survive long periods of reduced C supply from the canopy by switching in metabolism from recent carbohydrates to older storage pools with a potential mixture of respiratory substrates, including lipids. This mechanism of stress resilience can explain why tree decline may take many years until death occurs.
Towards a taxonomy of sexuality following traumatic brain injury: A pilot exploratory study using cluster analysis.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Clinicians need to understand the heterogeneity of sexual problems following traumatic brain injury (TBI) for their adequate identification and treatment. OBJECTIVE To systematically identify groups of individuals with TBI showing similar patterns of sexual functioning. METHODS Forty-two individuals with TBI with a mean age of 37.9 years (SD = 9.7) and an average of 3.3 years post-injury (SD = 4.3). We included four primary measures in the cluster analysis (sexual quality of life questionnaire, sexual desire inventory, generalized anxiety disorder scale, and the patient health questionnaire for depression) and two secondary measures for cluster validation (post-concussion symptom scale and dysexecutive questionnaire). RESULTS A hierarchical cluster analysis using the Ward method revealed the existence of two groups of individuals with TBI: a) with sexual problems who were older, showed lower levels of sexual quality of life and sexual desire, with significant symptoms of anxiety and depression, and b) without sexual problems who were younger, showed high levels of sexual quality of life and sexual desire, as well as low complaints of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS Clinicians must be more proactive in assessing sexual concerns, mostly when emotional and cognitive difficulties are present in older individuals with TBI, regardless of gender, chronicity and injury severity.
