Abstract:More often than not, students with physical disabilities are not provided equitable access to recreational sport programs or clubs, even though they often pay the same fees as their peers without disabilities. Involvement in recreational sports is a large component of the college campus experiences, yet those living with disability are likely to experience a variety of challenges associated with participation, which may inhibit them from fully engaging in sports with their peers and pursuing an active lifestyle. To examine the impact of involvement in an inclusive adaptive sport program on the college experience, a qualitative phenomenological approach was implemented with a convenience sample of 8 college students currently participating in a CTRS-driven inclusive wheelchair basketball program. A semi-structured interview procedure was utilized to elicit the participants' experiences of involvement in the adaptive sports program. Of 8 college students, five were individuals without, and 3 were individuals with an identified physical disability. The adaptive sports program had a positive impact on both groups of students. Four themes and 10 subthemes emerged from the data analysis. Four themes identified were: (a) Sense of Community; (b) Access to Resources and New Opportunities; (c) Inclusive; and (d) Personal Growth.
Sport Participation for Elite Athletes With Physical Disabilities: Motivations, Barriers, and Facilitators

Abstract:There are many reasons why individuals are motivated to participate in sports. Less attention, however, is given for studying motivation and athlete development in adapted sport. The purpose of this study was to identify the motivations, facilitators, and barriers to sports participation of elite athletes with a physical disability. Participants (N = 23, 17 males, six females, mean age: 24.3 years) were recruited through online listservs, e-mails, and snowball sampling. A semistructured interview guide was employed. Analysis was conducted and grounded in self-determination theory and literature surrounding barriers and facilitators of sports participation. Through coding by multiple researchers, six themes emerged. Themes indicated that athletes attributed participation to constructs of self-determination theory as well as overcoming specific barriers such as cost, time constraints, and lack of opportunity. Among facilitators to their athletic development, there were empowerment and advocacy, increased health, college scholarships, and achieving performance-related goals.
Examining Ableism Through the Physical Activity Experiences of Blind and Visually Impaired Women

Abstract:Purpose: This study examined how ableism influences blind and visually impaired women's experiences accessing and engaging in exercise, physical activity, and sport. Methods: Ten women between the ages of 27 and 45 years completed a one-on-one audio-recorded virtual interview where they reflected on the meaningfulness of their exercise, physical activity, and/or sport experiences, as well as described any experiences related to direct, indirect, systemic, or internalized ableism within or when attempting to access those physical activity experiences. The interview transcripts were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings: The analysis resulted in the construction of 2 themes that depicted the participants' experiences: (1) "It's exhausting": navigating inaccessibility and (2) "You feel like a fish out of water": internalized ableism. Discussion: The themes highlight the participants' experiences which were largely focused on being forced to navigate inaccessible environments which resulted in exhaustion and expressions of internalized ableism. These findings provide insight into what makes and does not make a physical activity space accessible and welcoming for blind and visually impaired adults.

Abstract:Attitudes toward students with disabilities play a crucial role in creating an inclusive and supportive campus environment. This study investigated college students’ attitudes toward peers with disabilities and explored the factors that influence these attitudes. Data from 457 students were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that students’ attitudes toward peers with disabilities were moderately positive overall, with room for improvement. Specifically, the findings highlighted several key factors that positively influenced attitudes including presence of a family member or friend with a disability and students’ involvement in disability-related programming. However, the study also identified areas that require attention including limited exposure to disability-related coursework among students, and low involvement in disability-related programming on campus. Implications highlight the significance of creating a supportive and inclusive campus climate for students with disabilities. Recommendations include various academic focused strategies, but focus on one social opportunity, namely intercollegiate adaptive sports.

Abstract:The delay period in the orthodontic tooth movement cycle was studied with respect to the stimulation of an extractable bone resorptive activity and the degree of tissue damage at sites of greatest pressure. Total area of cemental cratering was used as a measure of tissue damage. Both bone resorptive activity and tissue damage were found to be significantly increased with moderate and high forces, a fact which supports the suggestion that bone resorptive activity is related to tissue damage.

Abstract:Inspired by ideas of able-mindedness, this study explored athletes’ experiences of participation in disability sports. The athletes included were active members in sports clubs targeting people with intellectual disability. The study focused on their perspectives on and understanding of participation, as well as on their accounts of positioning and self-identification, in disability sports. In all, 17 athletes were interviewed. Using thematic analysis, three themes were singled out: identity construction and positioning, the (dis)able-minded athlete and facilitation of participation through others. The results show that participation influences identity construction and is a basis for a common athletic identity. This study offers important knowledge for the facilitation of participation and for the elucidation of able-mindedness in disability sports.

Abstract:Introduction Although the benefits of physical activity are widely recognised, levels of inactivity are considerably higher for children and young people with disabilities than those without. Young people with disabilities struggle to access inclusive opportunities and there is a lack of research surrounding users’ experiences of disability sport more generally. This research aimed to explore members’ experiences of a community-based wheelchair basketball club and its impact on daily life. Method Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 disabled and able-bodied members of the club (aged 6–25 years) to gain an in-depth understanding of their experiences. Findings Inductive thematic analysis identified an overarching theme of ‘wheelchair basketball elicits strong emotions’ and four main themes of ‘positive social interactions’, ‘benefitting health and independence’, ‘changing perceptions of disability’ and ‘a meaningful occupation that opens doors’. Participants reported positive experiences of wheelchair basketball, which improved their physical and mental health whilst increasing opportunities for socialisation and encouraging acceptance of disability. Conclusion The findings have implications at individual, organisational and societal levels, and provide some justification for the role of occupational therapy in disability sport. The findings demonstrate the potential for inclusive community sports clubs to improve health and social outcomes for individuals, regardless of disability.

Abstract:Individuals who experience loss of their physical abilities often face the challenges of adapting to a new way of life. Past research has shown that sport participation can assist the physical and psychological adaptation to acquired physical disabilities. The purposes of our study were to examine the following: (a) the resilience process of sport participants with acquired spinal cord injury, and (b) the role of sport participation in the resilience process. We conducted semistructured phenomenological interviews with 12 male quadriplegic wheelchair rugby players. Results show that the development of resilience is a multifactorial process involving pre-existing factors and pre-adversity experiences, disturbance/disturbing emotions, various types and sources of social support, special opportunities and experiences, various behavioral and cognitive coping strategies, motivation to adapt to changes, and learned attributes or gains from the resilience process. We discuss implications for future research and practice.

Abstract:Background: Despite national and institutional policies, American colleges do not currently provide student-athletes with disabilities equal access to sports opportunities. Disabled youth who wish to pursue their academic and athletic dreams in college thus have prohibitively limited options, even with popular American sports such as basketball. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics and factors that may facilitate the development and perpetuation of collegiate wheelchair basketball programs in the United States. Methods: Five qualitative interviews were conducted with coaches and/or program administrators of established college wheelchair basketball programs. Interviews were coded and analyzed to explore common themes. Results: Thematic data analysis uncovered five common themes important to the development and maintenance of these programs: a) coach characteristics, b) actions to recognize and address equity, c) boosters, d) institutional barriers, and e) network effects. Conclusion: These common factors are important in the development, sustainability, and longevity of college wheelchair basketball programs and should be considered by those interested in starting similar programs.

Abstract:Purpose: Individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries can experience many instances of psychosocial hardship. Although scholars have suggested that participation in sport can positively impact psychosocial health, few studies have explored this phenomenon within the disabled population of developing nations. Methods: Sixteen wheelchair tennis players were recruited across six developing countries and interviewed in regards to their experiences. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, transcribed verbatim and subject to thematic analysis. Results: Wheelchair tennis players perceived their participation in sport enhanced their psychosocial well-being. Three broad themes emerged from analysis of the interviews; (1) developed transferrable skills, (2) perceived personal growth and (3) benefits of an athletic identity. Conclusions: Sports participation, in this case wheelchair tennis, may be a viable means to promote psychosocial well-being in disabled populations within developing nations. Moreover, sport holds the potential to challenge negative perceptions of disability at an individual and societal level within these cultures. Implication for Rehabilitation Individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries may experience psychosocial hardship and cultural stigma. Wheelchair sport may be a viable means to enhance psychosocial well-being in this population. Skills learnt "on court" are transferrable to everyday life potentially improving independence and quality of life. Identifying as an athlete can challenge negative cultural perceptions of disability.

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the psychological outcomes of engaging in adaptive sports for individuals with disabilities. Methods and Materials: This qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews with 23 participants ranged from 18 to 55 years, with a mean age of 32 years who are actively involved in adaptive sports. Participants were selected through a purposive sampling technique to ensure a diverse representation in terms of age, gender, type of disability, and sport. Data collection focused on participants' personal experiences with adaptive sports, with an emphasis on psychological impacts. Theoretical saturation was achieved to ensure comprehensive coverage of the experiences. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify main themes and categories within the psychological outcomes of adaptive sports participation. Findings: The analysis revealed five main themes associated with the psychological outcomes of participating in adaptive sports: Emotional Well-being, Social Integration, Personal Empowerment, Cognitive Outcomes, and Adaptation and Coping. Under Emotional Well-being, participants reported improvements in emotional resilience, self-esteem, joy and fulfillment, and anxiety reduction. Social Integration was characterized by a strengthened sense of belonging, enhanced social support, and improved communication skills. Personal Empowerment was evident through increased autonomy, goal achievement, and personal growth. Cognitive Outcomes included better concentration and focus, as well as enhanced problem-solving skills. Lastly, Adaptation and Coping were observed through the development of effective coping mechanisms, increased resilience, and acceptance of disability. Conclusion: The study concludes that adaptive sports play a significant role in enhancing the psychological well-being of individuals with disabilities. Participation in adaptive sports leads to improvements in emotional well-being, social integration, personal empowerment, cognitive functions, and adaptive coping strategies. These findings underscore the importance of promoting and facilitating access to adaptive sports as a means of supporting the mental health and overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this phenomenological study is to determine the motivational factors in the participation of wheelchair basketball players in sports according to Self-Determination Theory. Methods: The study group of the research was determined by the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. Accordingly, thirteen (13) wheelchair athletes constituted the study group. In the research, a personal information form and a semi-structured interview form were prepared as data collection tools within the framework of the self-determination theory. Interviews were conducted face-to-face with the prepared interview forms. The data were analyzed by reflexive thematic analysis method. Results: Six (6) themes emerged: constraints, coping strategies, appreciation, positive feedback, need for existence, and development. Sixteen sub-themes related to these themes were identified. Conclusion: The most significant factors causing a lack of motivation in wheelchair basketball athletes were observed to be structural constraints such as access to materials and facilities. Extrinsic sources of motivation were identified as the positive attitudes and behaviors of individuals in their environment, often related to admiration, appreciation, and being set as an example, and this situation has a positive impact on wheelchair basketball athletes. On the other hand, it can be stated that intrinsic motivations such as identity change, gaining self-confidence, and the feeling of success are crucial in overcoming constraints through sports participation.

Abstract:Purpose: This study explores what individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) perceive to be the benefits of becoming involved in organized sport and identifies the barriers to participation. Method: Seven SCI athletes from a variety of sports were interviewed in a semi-structured format. Results: 20 benefits and 18 individual barriers were identified and categorized into sub-themes: benefits were categorized into sub-themes of "socialization," "self-worth," "physical challenge" and "emotional." Barriers were grouped into "organization," "medical," "emotional," "a lack of available information" and "views held by others." Conclusion: A variety of benefits from participating in sport were identified, including socialization, the acquisition of knowledge from others, the development of greater awareness of health and well-being issues, weight maintenance, functional development and independence. Barriers identified included financial constraints, the lack of information regarding medical complications and sporting opportunities, and the need for able-bodied support. The findings have implications for the rehabilitation of individuals with SCI.

Abstract:While reading the literature, it is seen that there are not enough studies on the motivation of disabled individuals to participate in sports. This study aims to examine the sports participation motivations of hearing impaired and physically disabled athletes. This study was a cross-sectional study. The research group of the study consists of physically and hearing-impaired individuals between the ages of 18–47. The participants of this research group consisted of 253 volunteer disabled individuals, 150 of whom were men and 103 of whom were women. Sports participation motivation scale was used for disabled individuals. The scale consists of 3 dimensions and is a 5-point Likert type. The results of the study showed that hearing-impaired people have a higher high school rate and physically person with disability have a higher bachelor's degree rate, but the primary education rate did not change between hearing and physically person with disability. Physical activity participation differed between hearing and physically person with disability, and it was observed that hearing-impaired people participated in more physical activities. The level of well-being of the physically disabled was significantly better than the hearing impaired. As conclusion, it is observed that the people with the lowest motivation to participate in sports are primary school graduates and those with high welfare have a high motivation to participate in sports.

Case Studies in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Abstract:For individuals with an intellectual disability, emerging adulthood (18–25 years) may be a disruptive time with an abrupt ending to programming and services after adolescence. This study critically explores the social environment and experiences of individuals involved in a Special Olympics paddling program for emerging adult athletes with an intellectual disability. Using an instrumental case study design, multiple qualitative methods were implemented including photography, videography, observations, and interviews. The participants included four athletes (one female and three male; three with autism spectrum disorder, one with mild intellectual disability), three fathers, a coach, a program coordinator, and an administrator. Analyses were guided by interpretivism and the quality parasport participation framework. The findings highlight how the limited staff training and preparation, the complexity of providing such a program, and parental hidden labor in their adult children’s sport involvement influence the social environment. Implications for coaching practices include the importance of communication strategies and coach education.

Abstract:Today, intellectually disabled athletes can participate in a variety of international sports competitions. For an athlete, access to one or another of these events is possible according to their level of sporting ability or their intellectual capacity, but also depends on their country and the extent to which it hosts International Sports movements. One option for those who have the greatest sporting achievements – and often the greatest intellectual capacity – is to be involved in the competitive circuit organized according to the pyramidal logic of traditional elite sports and in which the ultimate aim is participation in the Paralympic games, a greatly valued perspective that epitomizes a process of de-stigmatization of these athletes. Everyone can participate in an international sports event and ‘play at’ being champion by committing to the Special Olympics movement, which offers particular and non-selective sports games, but which does not command the same recognition or the eventual de-stigmatization.

Abstract:The popularity of the Paralympics co-exists with persistent exclusion of disabled youth and adults in community sport and recreation programmes around the world. This study explored the experiences of disabled people in sport, fitness and dance, drawing upon a range of participants’ perspectives from Paralympic athletes and professional dancers, to those who’d never engaged in physical activities. We asked participants about the range of psycho-social factors that intervene between a disabled person and a workable, enjoyable fitness regimen. Insights emerged into factors that encourage enjoyable physical movement for some, and factors that discourage or prohibit this for others. Analytic tools of Critical Disability Theory were applied to penetrate stereotyped conceptualizations of disabled people, taking a long view into the history of disability discrimination and exclusion. An example is the concept and (English) word, ‘fitness’ used during the Eugenics Movement to dismiss the worth of disabled people. Along with other marginalized populations, the ‘unfit’ were systematically targeted with elimination. We addressed these archaic attitudes, in concert with the present era’s intrusions of architectural, programmatic and attitudinal barriers, which may become internalized as resistance to physical activities. Participants offered strategies to support others in the world of movement, along with encouragement to Disability Studies scholars to expand research in this arena.

Abstract:This study explores the multifaceted perspective of gay and lesbian athletes participating in sports, specifically focusing on their challenges and coping mechanisms. A total of six (6) gay and lesbian athletes engaged in various sports were subjected to semi-structured interviews to investigate the impact of their experiences during sports participation and the development of their coping mechanisms. Despite growing endeavors towards acceptability and inclusion within the realm of sport participation, gay and lesbian athletes continue to face substantial challenges related to negative thoughts and feelings and social problems. Findings suggest that gay and lesbian athletes conceal their sexual orientation, actively seek support from peers, family, and coaches, and develop a strong sense of identity to navigate these challenges effectively. Moreover, it examines the coping mechanisms employed by gay and lesbian athletes to overcome these challenges, such as self-affirmation, establishing relationships, and coping strategies. Through exploration of these challenges and coping mechanisms, this study aims to shed light on the complexities of gay and lesbian athletes’ experiences in sports and provide valuable insights for fostering greater enhanced inclusivity and support networks within sports communities.
