Abstract:Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation was reported to increase rice root activity and element bioavailability, which results in enhanced heavy metal (HM) absorption and this HM ends up in rice grains. HM uptake was also affected by the levels of phosphorus (P) fertilizer application. HMs enter food chain via consumption of rice grains and cause health problems. In this study, we compared the differences in grain yield, grain quality, water use efficiency (WUE), partial factor productivity of applied P (PFPp), HM contents in different tissues and transfer coefficient (TC) of HMs under a combination of treatments involving two irrigation regimes (continuous flooding (CF) and AWD irrigation) and three P fertilizer application levels (0.4 g P2O5/kg soil, HP; 0.2 g P2O5/kg soil, MP; 0 g P2O5/kg soil, LP). Compared to CF, AWD irrigation increased grain yield (without reducing grain quality), decreased irrigation water use and the number of irrigation events needed and improved WUE and PFPp at all three P fertilizer application levels, while the accumulation of HMs in grains increased when more P was applied. This accumulation of HMs in grains thus requires immediate attention to the level of P fertilizer application and its optimization in water-saving AWD irrigation to minimize grain HM content.
Combining Alternate Wetting and Drying Irrigation with Reduced Phosphorus Fertilizer Application Reduces Water Use and Promotes Phosphorus Use Efficiency Without Yield Loss in Rice Plants

Abstract:As one of the most widely promoted effective irrigation strategies for rice, alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation can not only reduce water use but also increase mineral nutrient use efficiency. In this research, we compared the differences in grain yield, grain quality, phosphorus use efficiency (PUE), and growth states of roots and shoots of lowland and upland rice cultivars that were subjected to different irrigation and phosphorus (P) fertilizer application treatments in a field study for two years. The irrigation treatments consisted of two irrigation regimes: continuously flooded (CF) and AWD irrigation and the P fertilizer treatments included three P rates, i.e., 0, 45, and 90 kg ha(-1) (P0, P45, and P90, respectively). The results revealed that AWD irrigation led to an increase in grain yield and improved PUE of both rice varieties at P45. The roots were longer and deeper under AWD irrigation, which contributed to the higher grain yield and higher resource use efficiency obtained with this treatment. At the lower P rates, both rice types translocated more P from vegetative tissues to grains, which led to a better PUE. Molecular analysis show that plant hormones (IAA, gibberellins, cytokinins and ABA) and members of the OsPht1 family are also involved in the regulation of P homeostasis under AWD irrigation. Our results demonstrate that AWD irrigation can also enhance PUE for the rice in the field.
Effects of water-saving superabsorbent polymer on antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation in oat (Avena sativa L.) under drought stress

Abstract:Background: Drought stress significantly limits oat (Avena sativa L.) growth and productivity. Thus an efficient management of soil moisture and study of metabolic changes in response to drought are important for improved production of oat. The objective was to gain a better understanding of drought tolerance mechanisms and improve soil water management strategies using water-saving superabsorbent polymer (SAP) at 60 kg ha(-1) under three irrigation levels (adequate, moderate and deficit) using a new type of hydraulic pressure-controlled auto irrigator. Results: The results showed that the relative water content and leaf water potential (ψ(1) ) were much higher in oats treated with SAP. Although the SAP had little effect on plant biomass accumulation under adequate and moderate irrigation, it significantly increased the biomass by 52.7% under deficit irrigation. Plants treated with SAP under deficit irrigation showed a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities in leaves compared with control plants. Conclusion: Our results suggested that drought stress leads to production of oxygen radicals, which results in increased lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in the plant, and the application of SAP could conserve soil water, making same available to plants for increased biomass accumulation and reduced oxidative stress especially under severe water stress.
Effects of strip cropping with reducing row spacing and super absorbent polymer on yield and water productivity of oat (Avena sativa L.) under drip irrigation in Inner Mongolia, China

Abstract:Abstract With the serious shortage of water resources and the development of water-saving agriculture, the application of drip irrigation has been paid more and more attention. But there was lack of oat planting methods suitable for drip irrigation, currently. In order to establish an efficient oat planting method for drip irrigation, a study was conducted at Agriculture and Forestry Sciences of Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia during the season (2019–2020) to evaluate the effect of strip cropping with reducing row spacing and super absorbent polymer on the yield and water use efficiency of oat. To conduct the field trials, a split plot system in three replications was established. Three planting patterns were in the main plots, including conventional cropping with 20 cm equal row spacing (PA), strip cropping with the 15 cm row spacing (PB) and strip cropping with the 10 cm row spacing (PC), and two super absorbent polymer levels were in the subplots, including 22.5 kg ha −2 (Y) and 0 (N). The results showed that, compared with PA, PB and PC both decreased the irrigation volumes by 4.5–18.4 mm, and the irrigation volumes of PB was lower than that of PC. When super absorbent polymers were applied, compared with PA, PB significantly increased grain yield and above-ground biomass, but PC had the opposite effects. The grain yield and above-ground biomass of PB significantly increased by 16.65% and 7.31% on average in two years, respectively. And the increasing of grain yield was attributed by the significant increasing of pike number and kernel number per spike. But when super absorbent polymers were not applied, PB had no significant effects on grain yield and above-ground biomass. PB also had the significant effects on regulating water use of oats weather or not super absorbent polymers were applied, it significantly increased the precipitation ratio by 2.64% (PBY) and 2.13% (PBN) and decreased irrigation ration by 3.32% (PBY) and 5.28% (PBN) on average in two years. Although PB and PC both decreased the total evapotranspiration, but PB increased WUE and PC deceased WUE. The WUE of PB increased by 19.70% (PBY) and 9.87% (PBN) on average in two years. Also PB had the highest economic benefits in all treatments . In conclusion, a drip irrigation oat planting pattern was proposed, which the row spacing is 15 cm, adjusted the equal row spacing planting to 8-row strip planting, with a belt spacing of 30 cm, combined with the application of 22.5 kg ha −2 applying super absorbent polymers. And this oat planting pattern is a viable strategy to improve oat productivity.

Impact of Long-Term Reclaimed Water Irrigation on the Distribution of Potentially Toxic Elements in Soil: An In-Situ Experiment Study in the North China Plain

Abstract:The widespread use of reclaimed water has alleviated the water resource crisis worldwide, but long-term use of reclaimed water for irrigation, especially in agricultural countries, might threaten the soil environment and further affect groundwater quality. An in-situ experiment had been carried out in the North China Plain, which aimed to reveal the impact of long-term reclaimed water irrigation on soil properties and distribution of potentially toxic elements (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Zn and Pb) in the soil profile as well as shallow groundwater. Four land plots were irrigated with different quantity of reclaimed water to represent 0, 13, 22 and 35 years’ irrigation duration. Pollution Load Index (PLI) values of each soil layer were calculated to further assess the pollution status of irrigated soils by potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Results showed that long-term reclaimed water irrigation caused appreciable increase of organic matter content, and might improve the soil quality. High soil organic matter concentrations conduced to high adsorption and retention capacity of the soils toward PTEs, which could reduce the risk of PTEs leaching into deep layers or shallow groundwater. Highest levels of Cr, Pb and Zn were observed at 200–240 cm and 460–500 cm horizons in plots. Longer irrigation time (35 years and 22 years) resulted in a decreasing trend of As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn in lower part of soil profiles (>540 cm) compared with that with 13-years’ irrigation years. Long-term reclaimed water irrigation still brought about increases in concentrations of some elements in deep soil layer although their content in soils and shallow groundwater was below the national standard. Totally speaking, proper management for reclaimed water irrigation, such as reduction of irrigation volume and rate of reclaimed water, was still needed when a very long irrigation period was performed.

Abstract:The presence of phenols, such as nonylphenol (NP), bisphenol (BPA), and octylphenol (OP), in the environment have been receiving increased attention due to their potential risks to human health and environment. The use of reclaimed water for irrigation may be one of the sources of these phenols in the agricultural system. A field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on phenol contamination of agricultural topsoil and products in the North China Plain between 2015 and 2016. Three irrigation treatments were applied to all crops: reclaimed water irrigation, groundwater irrigation and alternative irrigation with reclaimed water and groundwater (1:1, v/v). The results showed that the concentrations of NP, BPA, and OP in the topsoil were 0.02–0.54, 0.004–0.06, and ND–9.9×10−3 mg/kg, respectively; the corresponding values in agricultural products were 0.007–0.70, 0.004–0.24, and ND–1.08 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of NP in the topsoil and agricultural products and that of BPA in the agricultural products were all less than the recommended limits. The yields of wheat, maize, vegetables were 4.35–7.08, 1.03–6.46, and 10.9–67.0 t/ha, respectively. The bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) of OP, NP, and BPA for cereals were 0.7–4.77, 0.16–4.59, and 1.3–23.9, respectively; the corresponding values in vegetables were 0.0–4.53 (except cucumber and eggplant), 0.38–12.6, and 0.57–24.3, respectively. No significant differences in phenol concentrations, BCFs, or yields of wheat and vegetables were observed among the three irrigation treatments. In conclusion, compared with groundwater irrigation, reclaimed water irrigation in this experiment did not significantly affect phenol concentrations in the topsoil and agricultural products as well as BCFs and yields of wheat and vegetables. However, because the quality of reclaimed water may vary across collected areas, additional experiments are warranted to analyze the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on the risk of phenol contamination.

Abstract:Reclaimed water is an important source of irrigation and is widely used on agricultural soils throughout the world, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. However, concerns about the potential risks of this practice are rapidly increasing because reclaimed water may contain various organic pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Trace levels of PPCPs have been found in fields irrigated with reclaimed water, and continual infusion, along with bioaccumulation properties, may result in significant bio-uptake and PPCP contamination in agricultural soils. This review attempts to summarize the literature concerning the fate and behavior of PPCPs in agricultural soils, as well as their adverse effects on soil organisms (including microorganisms and fauna), crops, and even humans via dietary consumption. Strategies and potential technologies for degrading or removing PPCPs from soils are addressed, along with the irrigation strategies and agricultural practices for minimizing PPCP transfer to crops and groundwater. Based on this review, we conclude that the agricultural risks of PPCPs associated with reclaimed water irrigation could be controlled under certain agro-ecological conditions. We suggest developing agro-ecosystem-specific practices and regulations for reclaimed water irrigation on the basis of a systematic assessment and modeling analysis of the fate, transport, accumulation, and transformation of PPCPs in soil–crop systems.

Abstract:The geographical and temporal distribution of precipitation has and is continuing to change with changing climate. Shifting precipitation will likely require adaptations to irrigation strategies, and because 35% of rainfed and 60% of irrigated agriculture is within 20 km of a wastewater treatment plant, we expect that the use of treated wastewater (e.g., reclaimed wastewater) for irrigation will increase. Treated wastewater contains various organic and inorganic substances that may have beneficial (e.g., nitrate) or deleterious (e.g., salt) effects on plants, which may cause a change in global food productivity should a large change to treated wastewater irrigation occur. We reviewed literature focused on food crop growth inhibition or promotion resulting from exposure to xenobiotics, engineered nanoparticles, nitrogen, and phosphorus, metals, and salts. Xenobiotics and engineered nanoparticles, in nearly all instances, were detrimental to crop growth, but only at concentrations much greater than would be currently expected in treated wastewater. However, future changes in wastewater flow and use of these compounds and particles may result in phytotoxicity, particularly for xenobiotics, as some are present in wastewater at concentrations within approximately an order of magnitude of concentrations which caused growth inhibition. The availability of nutrients present in treated wastewater provided the greatest overall benefit, but may be surpassed by the detrimental impact of salt in scenarios where either high concentrations of salt are directly deleterious to plant development (rare) or in scenarios where soils are poorly managed, resulting in soil salt accumulation.

Abstract:Abstract To explore the effects of mixed irrigation on soil and crops, a pot experiment was conducted in two salinity levels of brackish water, four levels of mixed brackish-reclaimed water and freshwater irrigation as the control. The soil Na-Cl to Ca-SO4 contents changed, and activities of soil alkaline phosphatase and polyphenol oxidase changed, exhibiting a ‘V’-shaped curve with increasing the proportion of reclaimed water in the mixture. At the same brackish-reclaimed water level, there were no significant differences in alkaline phosphatase and polyphenol oxidase activities except for soil alkaline phosphatase activity decreasing significantly with the increase in salinity under brackish water irrigation. Mixed irrigation obviously improved superoxide dismutase activity but no significant influences on aboveground dry weight, underground biomass or crop physiological indexes (chlorophyll, soluble protein, malondialdehyde, peroxidase, catalase). Based on the integrated biological response index version 2 (IBRv2), the deviation of reclaimed water irrigation was the smallest, followed by 1:1 and 1:2 (3, 5 g/L brackish water salinities, respectively), with IBRv2 values of 7.94, 12.55 and 16.04. Therefore, considering the soil-crop characteristics, limited daily water amount and inadequate pipeline facilities for reclaimed water, the brackish-reclaimed water ratio should be 1:1 and 1:2 at 3, 5 g/L of brackish water, respectively.

Effects of reclaimed wastewater irrigation on soil-crop systems in China: A review

Abstract:Reclaimed wastewater (RW) use represents a substantial opportunity to alleviate the growing scarcity of water for irrigation of agricultural crops in China. However, insufficient understanding of the effects and fates of possible contaminants in RW promotes concerns over crop safety and prevents the extensive incorporation of RW in agriculture. We reviewed the characteristics of contaminants in RW, the fate of contaminants in soil-crop systems, and the effects of RW irrigation on soil quality and crop growth in China. We found that concentrations of heavy metals in RW were higher than the permissible limits in some areas. The total concentrations and main categories of emerging contaminants and pathogens in RW varied markedly among municipal wastewater treatment plants, and the greatest risks of contamination were posed by ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and erythromycin, the most frequently observed compounds with risk quotients >1. The negative effects of salts and nutrients in RW on soil quality and crop growth were minor and manageable. The accumulation of heavy metals and emerging contaminants in soils irrigated with RW did not pose an immediate risk to soils and crops. Changes in soil microbial populations, diversity, and activity caused by RW irrigation increased crop yields and protected crops against contaminants. However, attention is necessary to the risks of bioaccumulation in soils and crops of heavy metals, emerging contaminants, intermediate metabolites, and pathogens, and their effects on human health with long-term RW irrigation. We recommend irrigation practices, crop screening, soil treatments, prioritizing the risks of contaminants, and comprehensive management to increase safety in RW used for agricultural irrigation.

Abstract:Soil moisture, salinity, oat growth and yield were explored during the amelioration of reclaimed coastal saline soil using chicken manure, polyacrylamide, wheat straw, and bacterial manure. The field experiment was conducted by six soil treatments: control (CK), application of organic manure (OM); combined application of polyacrylamide and organic manure (PAM + OM); combined application of straw mulching and organic manure (SM + OM); combined application of buried straw and organic manure (BS + OM); and combined application of bacterial manure and organic manure (BM + OM). Soil moisture was found to be decreased gradually during the growing season. Surface soil moisture increased consistently under various amendment treatments compared with CK throughout the growing season, except in the later growing stage of SM + OM treatment. Simultaneously, soil amendment treatments remarkably reduced soil salinity at 0-40 cm depth and decreased surface soil salinity by 68.0-81.4%, 54.6-75.2%, 56.9-78.2%, 55.1-65.7%, and 28.8-53.4% under SM + OM, PAM + OM, BS + OM, BM + OM and OM treatments throughout the growing season. Furthermore, amendment treatments significantly promoted oat growth and yield, as indicated by thicker stem diameters, taller plant height and higher aboveground biomass and yield. Soil salinity was significantly influenced by precipitation and evaporation, and apparently inhibited the growth, aboveground biomass and yield of oats.

Abstract:Due to the similar sources of swage irrigation, organic fertilizer, and sludge application, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics coexist inevitably in the agriculture soils. However, the impacts of MPs with different polymer types and aging status on the bio-accessibility of co-existing antibiotics in soils remained unclear. Therefore, we using the diffusive gradients films for organic compounds devices (o-DGT) to evaluated the distribution of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in both paddy soil and saline soil amended with 0.5 % ( w /w) MPs. Four polymer types (polyethylene: PE, polypropylene: PP, polyamide: PA, and polyethylene terephthalate: PET) and two aging statuses (aged PE and aged PP) of MPs were used in this study. Results showed that soil properties significantly influence the partition of SDZ in soil and soil solution, and SDZ gained a lower degradation rate but higher mobility in saline soil. MPs pose different impacts on partition of SDZ between paddy soil and saline soil. Notably, PP reduced the labile solid phase-solution phase partition coefficient (K dl ) by 17.7 % in paddy soil, while PE, PP, and aPE increased the K dl value by 2.00, 1.62, and 2.81 times in saline soil. Besides, in saline soil, all the MPs reduced the SDZ concentration in the soil solution, while significantly increased the SDZ in o-DGT phase. Conversely, MPs did not impact the SDZ's o-DGT concentration in paddy soil. Additionally, MPs increased the R value of SDZ in two soils, especially in saline soil. It suggested that MPs could potentially enhance the resupply of SDZ from soil to plants, particularly under saline conditions. Furthermore, aged MPs had a more pronounced effect on these indicators compared to virgin MPs in saline soil. Therefore, MPs in soil poses a potential risk for biota's uptake of SDZ, particularly in fragile environment. Moreover, the risk intensifies with aged MPs.

Abstract:Irrigating crops with reclaimed water from sewage treatment plants can contribute to the conservation and augmentation of the water resources in arid regions. Many countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa are suffering from serious water shortages. Three field studies were conducted during the period 2010–2011 to assess yield components and chemical constituents of wheat, cowpea and maize crops grown in rotation with reclaimed water for irrigation in comparison with desalinated and groundwater. The reclaimed water irrigation increased wheat plant height (cm), chlorophyll, leaf area (cm2), leaf length (cm), grain yield (t ha−1) and the water productivity (kg grain m−3). It improved all cowpea growth parameters under study except the dry forage yield. Nitrogen was also higher under reclaimed water irrigation in wheat tissue, cowpea pods and maize cobs. Reclaimed water had no effect on the element concentrations in wheat, cowpea and maize except for nickel concentration in wheat plants, and Sodium and Manganese concentrations in maize plants. Using reclaimed water for irrigation increased the yield parameters of wheat, cowpea and maize. However, all the studied element concentrations in wheat, cowpea and maize were within the normal limits after irrigation by reclaimed water. It can be concluded that reclaimed water usage will have significant positive impacts on yield and water productivity.

Abstract:The application of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation can effectively reduce the use of freshwater resources including groundwater, addressing the increasingly severe challenge of water shortage. However, reclaimed water irrigation will cause potential pollution risks to groundwater, which needs to be further studied to ensure the safety of reclaimed water irrigation. An integrated quantitative assessment system including the modified DRASTIC model was developed to evaluate the pollution risks caused by reclaimed water irrigation and scientific strategies were offered for the development of reclaimed water irrigation in water shortage areas to avoid groundwater pollution. The groundwater intrinsic vulnerability index, the hazards of the characteristic pollutants, and the groundwater values were quantified to obtain the pollution risks distribution map. In the Beijing plain of north China, the low groundwater pollution risk areas were located in the midstream of Chaobai river baisin, Beiyun river basin, and Yongding river basin, accounting for 48.3% of the total study area. These areas in low pollution risk can be considered as safety areas for reclaimed water irrigation. The moderate groundwater pollution risk areas accounting for 46.9% of the total study area were suggested to apply water-saving irrigation measures for preventing groundwater pollution. The reclaimed water irrigation should be prohibited in the high groundwater pollution risk areas, which accounted for 4.8% of the total study area. This study highlights the reasonable strategy for the development of reclaimed water irrigation in water shortage areas and lay a foundation for finding alternative water sources for agricultural irrigation.
Effects of reclaimed water irrigation on plant and soil environment

Abstract:To investigate the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on plant physiological indexes,mineral ele-ments and soil physical and chemical properties,the tap water,mixed water and reclaimed water were used for irrigation to Zoysia matrella ,Paspalum vaginatum ,Bougainvillea spectabilis and Melaleuca bracteata for 3 months,respectively.The results showed that the mixed water irrigation increased chlorophyll content,but had no significant effects on electrolyte leakage,malondialdehyde content,mineral elements and soil environment.In addition,on the one hand,reclaimed water irrigation reduced soil pH,increased soil conductivity,available K and Na content,but had no significant effects on Cu and Zn content.Besides,the differences of total N and available P content were found among different plant soil.On the other hand,reclaimed water irrigation had no significant damage to four kinds of plants.Moreover,the electrolyte leakage,malondialdehyde content,leaf total N and Na content of some plants were increased after irrigation of reclaimed water,but no significant effects were found in chlorophyll content,available P,available K,Cu and Zn content.Therefore,mixed water can be used for irriga-tion in urban greenbelt as a suitable water source,and reclaimed water can also be used for short-term irrigation in urban greenbelt.
Combining Freshwater Irrigation with Vegetable Selection to Mitigate the Occurrence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Edible Vegetable Parts in a Semiarid Farmland in Northwestern China

Abstract:Reclaimed-water irrigation can introduce perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) into farmlands. Selecting an appropriate irrigation method may mitigate the adverse effects of reclaimed-water irrigation; however, the effects of irrigation methods on PFAS pollution in different vegetables have remained poorly studied. Here, we collected soils from a farmland irrigated with long-term reclaimed-water irrigation to cultivate potato, carrot, cabbage, and pak choi using surface and sprinkler irrigation with reclaimed water or freshwater; the concentrations in water, soil, and vegetable samples, bioconcentration and translocation factors, and estimated daily intake of PFASs were quantified. Transitioning from reclaimed water to freshwater did not significantly alter soil PFAS concentrations but generally reduced PFAS concentrations in vegetables. Carrot and potato had lower PFAS concentrations in edible parts and estimated daily intake of PFASs than cabbage and pak choi, suggesting lower health risks for residents consuming carrot and potato. The bioconcentrations of individual perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids in the edible parts increased with shorter carbon-chain lengths, and cabbage and pak choi accumulated more short-chain PFASs in the edible parts than carrot and potato. This study highlights that implementing procedures to ensure cleaner irrigation water when growing nonleafy vegetables can effectively mitigate PFAS pollution in farmlands.
Deficit Irrigation as an Effective Way to Increase Potato Water Use Efficiency in Northern China: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Water scarcity poses a significant threat to the sustainable production of crops in Northern China. Despite this, the effect of water management practices, such as deficit irrigation, on the yield and WUE of potatoes has been rarely explored. Based on the meta-analysis of field experiment data, this study evaluated the influence of deficit irrigation on potato yield, evapotranspiration (ET), water use efficiency (WUE) and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) under variable soil types, water-saving ratio, irrigation methods, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, and fertilizer rate in Northern China. Here, we determined that potato WUE and IWUE were significantly increased by 10.0 and 31.6%, respectively, under deficit irrigation, while ET was significantly decreased by 26.3% compared to full irrigation. Conclusively, deficit irrigation significantly reduced potato yields by 16.4% compared to full irrigation. Furthermore, SOC content played a vital role in improving the WUE and alleviating potato yield losses under deficit irrigation. Our study suggested that maximum WUE with lower potato yield losses under deficit irrigation can be achieved in the Central Plains region of China or in yellow loam soil, brown soil, and meadow soil under alternate root-zone irrigation when the water-saving ratio was less than 45% and fertilizer application rates were 300 kg N ha−1, >240 kg P2O5 ha−1, and 181–300 kg K2O ha−1. Overall, these findings highlight the need for a comprehensive understanding of various agricultural management practices and local environmental conditions to optimize the benefits of deficit irrigation in potato-growing regions across Northern China.

Abstract:By investigating the uptake of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and five heavy metals from soils to maize at the farmlands with industrial wastewater irrigation, this study revealed the effects of heavy metals on PAHs uptake in terms of co-contamination. The results of 15 investigated soils showed medium contamination level and the vertical PAHs distribution in soils indicated that 2–3 rings PAHs with low octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow < 4.5) were easier to transport in soils, causing a great potential risk immigrating to the groundwater. The 3-ring PAHs were most likely to be taken up by maize roots whereas 2- and 4–6 ring PAHs had the lower likelihood. The translocation of PAHs in maize tissues has positive relationship with log Kow less than 4.5, while negatively correlated otherwise. Redundancy analysis indicated the unexpected results that, except for soil PAHs concentration, the PAHs translocation by maize was reduced by Pb uptake, but not significantly affected by soil organic matters, pH or the other four heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn). This study for the first time provides the restricted factors of PAHs and heavy metal acropetal translocation by maize when they co-exist at wastewater irrigation sites.
