Abstract:Importance: Artificial intelligence (AI) has made invaluable contributions to the technologic advancements across many fields. It is transforming health care and may have a role in improving patient outcomes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS). Observations: In recent years, new automated approaches to simulating and analyzing outcomes using AI have emerged. Advances in rhinoplasty, facelifts, orthognathic surgery, facial reanimation, and preoperative consultation are currently being developed in FPRS. Conclusions and Relevance: Applications of AI have been applied to assist facial plastic surgeons in the preoperative stage, intraoperative planning process, and objective assessment of postoperative outcomes. The application of AI provides avenues to improve postoperative outcomes, while also optimizing patient care.

Metal-to-metal charge transfer between dopant and host ions: Photoconductivity of Yb-doped CaF2 and SrF2 crystals.

Abstract:Dopant-to-host electron transfer is calculated using ab initio wavefunction-based embedded cluster methods for Yb/Ca pairs in CaF2 and Yb/Sr pairs in SrF2 crystals to investigate the mechanism of photoconductivity. The results show that, in these crystals, dopant-to-host electron transfer is a two-photon process mediated by the 4f(N-1)5d excited states of Y b(2+): these are reached by the first photon excitation; then, they absorb the second photon, which provokes the Y b(2+) + Ca(2+) (Sr(2+)) → Y b(3+) + Ca(+) (Sr(+)) electron phototransfer. This mechanism applies to all the observed Y b(2+) 4f-5d absorption bands with the exception of the first one: Electron transfer cannot occur at the first band wavelengths in CaF2:Y b(2+) because the Y b(3+)-Ca(+) states are not reached by the two-photon absorption. In contrast, Yb-to-host electron transfer is possible in SrF2:Y b(2+) at the wavelengths of the first 4f-5d absorption band, but the mechanism is different from that described above: first, the two-photon excitation process occurs within the Y b(2+) active center, then, non-radiative Yb-to-Sr electron transfer can occur. All of these features allow to interpret consistently available photoconductivity experiments in these materials, including the modulation of the photoconductivity by the absorption spectrum, the differences in photoconductivity thresholds observed in both hosts, and the peculiar photosensitivity observed in the SrF2 host, associated with the lowest 4f-5d band.

Abstract:Driven by the rapid development of big data, the amount of clinical data, including complex information, is expanding. Traditional data analysis methods cannot meet the need for mining data information, and artificial intelligence (AI) solves this problem. AI is increasingly being incorporated into modern medical practice. Algorithms provided by AI support advanced analysis and provide individualized aid to optimize medical decision-making. In plastic surgery, AI has made many breakthroughs in diagnosis, pre-operative surgical design, treatment decisions, and patient management. Plastic surgeons must recognize AI's potential development and limitations. This review describes the current application of AI in plastic surgery and discusses the challenges and problems that need to be solved. This study aims to foster the application of this new AI technology in clinical practice.

Abstract:A retrospective analysis of the records of 1531 retinoblastoma patients (809 male, 720 female, sex of two not known) was carried out to ascertain life table survivals. Of patients seen between 1914 and 1983 survival from metastatic retinoblastoma was the same for unilateral and bilateral patients. Metastatic retinoblastoma occurred within four years from diagnosis of the unilaterally affected patients and within nine years from diagnosis of the bilaterally affected patients. Survival thereafter remained at 76%. Because of the development of second non-ocular tumors in survivors of bilateral retinoblastoma there was a dramatic difference between survival of the patient with unilateral and bilateral disease. Within five years after diagnosis of bilateral retinoblastoma more children die from their second tumor than retinoblastoma itself. By 25 years after diagnosis more than 50% of the bilaterally affected children are dead and by 35 years 59% are dead. There was no difference between survival of boys and girls. Although bilateral patients were seen at significantly lower ages at diagnosis, they did not have a lower mortality rate from metastatic retinoblastoma. Despite the fact that bilaterally affected children with a family history were diagnosed at a younger age than those without a family history (11 vs. 15 mos.) mortality from metastatic retinoblastoma was the same. Similarly, even though unilateral patients with a family history were diagnosed younger than those without a family history (5 vs. 25 mos.) mortality from metastatic retinoblastoma was the same. There has been little change in the age at detection for retinoblastoma in the pre- versus post-1958 series and no change in survival rate for bilateral or unilateral patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

In this article, we review relevant AI tools and applications, including machine learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing. Our own Markov decision process for keloid treatment illustrates how these models are developed and can be used to enhance decision-making in clinical practice. Finally, we discuss challenges of implementing AI and knowledge gaps that must be addressed to successfully apply AI in plastic surgery.

Abstract:Since the pandemic, artificial intelligence (AI) has been integrated into several fields and everyday life as well. Healthcare is not an exception. Plastic surgery is a key focus area of this technological revolution, with hundreds of studies and reviews already published on the use of AI in plastics. This review summarizes the entirety of the available literature from 2020 to provide a comprehensive overview on AI innovation in plastic surgery. A systematic literature review (following the PRISMA guidelines) of all studies and papers that examined the application of AI in plastic surgery was carried out using Medline, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar. Outcomes of interest included the growing role of AI in clinical consultations, diagnosing potentials, surgical planning, intraoperative, and post-operative uses. Ninety-six studies were included in this review; six examined the role of AI in consultations, fifteen used AI in diagnoses and assessments, seventeen involved AI in surgical planning, fifteen reported on AI use in post-operative predictions and management, and nine involved administrations and documentation. This comprehensive review of available literature found AI to be capable of transforming care throughout the entire patient journey. Certain challenges and concerns persist, but a collaborative effort can solve these issues to bring about a new era of medicine, where AI aids doctors in the pursuit of optimal patient care.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to using technologies to simulate human cognition to solve a specific problem. The rapid development of AI in the health sector has been attributed to the improvement of computing speed, exponential increase in data production, and routine data collection. In this paper, we review the current applications of AI for oral and maxillofacial (OMF) cosmetic surgery to provide surgeons with the fundamental technical elements needed to understand its potential. AI plays an increasingly important role in OMF cosmetic surgery in various settings, and its usage may raise ethical issues. In addition to machine learning algorithms (a subtype of AI), convolutional neural networks (a subtype of deep learning) are widely used in OMF cosmetic surgeries. Depending on their complexity, these networks can extract and process the elementary characteristics of an image. They are, therefore, commonly used in the diagnostic process for medical images and facial photos. AI algorithms have been used to assist surgeons with diagnosis, therapeutic decisions, preoperative planning, and outcome prediction and evaluation. AI algorithms complement human skills while minimizing shortcomings through their capabilities to learn, classify, predict, and detect. This algorithm should, however, be rigorously evaluated clinically, and a systematic ethical reflection should be conducted regarding data protection, diversity, and transparency. It is possible to revolutionize the practice of functional and aesthetic surgeries with 3D simulation models and AI models. Planning, decision-making, and evaluation during and after surgery can be improved with simulation systems. A surgical AI model can also perform time-consuming or challenging tasks for surgeons.

Abstract:Background The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and ultrasound (US) technology is reshaping facial aesthetics, providing enhanced diagnostic precision, procedural safety, and personalized patient care. The variability in US imaging, stemming from patient anatomy, operator skills, and equipment diversity, poses challenges in achieving consistent and accurate outcomes. AI addresses these limitations by standardizing imaging protocols, automating image analysis, and supporting real‐time decision‐making. Objective To explore the applications of AI‐enhanced US in facial aesthetics, focusing on its potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, procedural safety, and personalized treatments while identifying future prospects and challenges. Methods A comprehensive review of current literature and advancements was conducted, examining the integration of AI with US in facial aesthetics. Key areas of focus included AI algorithms for image enhancement, real‐time guidance during procedures, postprocedure assessment, personalized treatment planning, and workflow optimization. Results AI‐enhanced US significantly improved diagnostic accuracy by automating the identification of critical anatomical structures and reducing operator variability. Real‐time guidance during procedures enhanced safety, reducing complications such as vascular occlusion and nerve damage. Postprocedure assessments facilitated early detection of complications and improved patient outcomes. Personalized treatment plans tailored to individual anatomy and clinical needs resulted in higher patient satisfaction. Additionally, AI optimized workflow efficiency through seamless integration with electronic health records and advanced training simulators. Conclusion The integration of AI and US technology represents a transformative advancement in facial aesthetics. By enhancing precision, safety, and personalization, AI‐powered US sets new benchmarks in diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes. Despite challenges related to data diversity, ethical considerations, and training, this synergy holds immense potential to revolutionize the field, offering improved outcomes and satisfaction for practitioners and patients alike. Further research and innovation are essential to fully realize the benefits of this technology.

Abstract:Facial vascularized composite allotransplantation (FVCA) is an emerging field of reconstructive surgery that represents a dogmatic shift in the surgical treatment of patients with severe facial disfigurements. While conventional reconstructive strategies were previously considered the goldstandard for patients with devastating facial trauma, FVCA has demonstrated promising short- and long-term outcomes. Yet, there remain several obstacles that complicate the integration of FVCA procedures into the standard workflow for facial trauma patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been shown to provide targeted and resource-effective solutions for persisting clinical challenges in various specialties. However, there is a paucity of studies elucidating the combination of FVCA and AI to overcome such hurdles. Here, we delineate the application possibilities of AI in the field of FVCA and discuss the use of AI technology for FVCA outcome simulation, diagnosis and prediction of rejection episodes, and malignancy screening. This line of research may serve as a fundament for future studies linking these two revolutionary biotechnologies.

Abstract:Background: Cosmetic dermatology is a growing field as more patients are seeking treatments for esthetic concerns. Traditionally, practitioners and patients utilize their own perceptions, current beauty standards, and manual observation to determine their satisfaction with cosmetic interventions. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be introduced into cosmetic dermatology to provide objective data-driven recommendations to both dermatologists and patients. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to compose a unified review that illustrates the various facets of artificial intelligence and formulate a hypothesis regarding the new implications of artificial intelligence in cosmetic dermatology specifically. Methods: A comprehensive search on PubMed was conducted to identify the available information related to AI in cosmetic dermatology. The search was conducted using a combination of keywords including "cosmetic dermatology" and "artificial intelligence." Results: The current literature indicates that AI models offer personalized, efficient, and result-driven outputs that can enhance cosmetic outcomes, patient satisfaction, and overall experience. Conclusion: Artificial intelligence integration in cosmetic dermatology shows a promising future, offering the ability to analyze vast data sets and deliver a tailored patient experience. By incorporating AI into cosmetic dermatology, there is an opportunity to balance evidence-based decision-making with the artistic human touch of cosmetic dermatologists.

Abstract:Abstract Background Aesthetic facial surgeries historically rely on subjective analysis in determining success; this limits objective comparison of surgical outcomes. Objectives This case study exemplifies the use of an artificial intelligence software on objectively analyzing facial rejuvenation techniques with the aim of reducing subjective bias. Methods Retrospectively, all patients who underwent facial rejuvenation surgery with concomitant procedures from 2015-2017 were included (n = 32). Patients were categorized in Groups A-C: Group A -10 superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) plication facelift (n = 10), Group B - SMASectomy facelift (n = 7), and Group C - high SMAS facelift (n = 15). Neutral repose images pre- and post-operatively (average >3 months) were analyzed using artificial intelligence for emotion and action unit alterations. Results Postoperatively, Group A experienced a decrease in happiness by 0.84% and a decrease in anger by 6.87% (P>>0.1). Group B had an increase in happiness by 0.77% and an increase in anger by 1.91% (P>>0.1). Both Group A and B did not show any discernable action unit patterns. In Group C, the lip corner puller AU increased in average intensity from 0% to 18.7%. This correlated with an average increase in detected happiness from 1.03% to 13.17% (p = 0.008). Conversely, the average detected anger decreased from 14.66% to 0.63% (p = 0.032). Conclusions This study provides the first proof of concept for the use of a machine learning software application to objectively assess various aesthetic surgical outcomes in facial rejuvenation. Due to limitations in patient heterogeneity, this study does not claim one technique’s superiority but serve as a concept foundation for future investigation.

Abstract:The use of artificial intelligence will soon be commonplace within the field of cosmetic dermatology. Current uses for artificial intelligence in the discipline have focused on empowering patients to be more involved in treatment decisions with customizable skin care, augmented reality applications, and at-home skin analysis tools. AI-driven skin analysis tools are also included in many dermatology practices, with the development of 3D facial reconstruction, including models for predicting clinical outcomes. We highlight current and developing applications of artificial intelligence in cosmetic dermatology and provide insight into future modalities in this field. Dermatologists need to be well-informed about emerging technologies to better educate patients and enhance their clinical practices.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI), notably Generative Adversarial Networks, has the potential to transform medical and patient education. Leveraging GANs in medical fields, especially cosmetic surgery, provides a plethora of benefits, including upholding patient confidentiality, ensuring broad exposure to diverse patient scenarios, and democratizing medical education. This study investigated the capacity of AI models, DALL-E 2, Midjourney, and Blue Willow, to generate realistic images pertinent to cosmetic surgery. We combined the generative powers of ChatGPT-4 and Google's BARD with these GANs to produce images of various noses, faces, and eyelids. Four board-certified plastic surgeons evaluated the generated images, eliminating the need for real patient photographs. Notably, generated images predominantly showcased female faces with lighter skin tones, lacking representation of males, older women, and those with a body mass index above 20. The integration of AI in cosmetic surgery offers enhanced patient education and training but demands careful and ethical incorporation to ensure comprehensive representation and uphold medical standards.

Abstract:Background Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have significantly impacted dermatology, particularly in diagnosing skin diseases. However, aesthetic dermatology faces unique challenges due to subjective evaluations and the lack of standardized assessment methods. Aims This review aims to explore the current state of AI in dermatology, evaluate its application in diagnosing skin conditions, and discuss the limitations of traditional evaluation methods in aesthetic dermatology. Additionally, the review proposes strategies for future integration of AI to address existing challenges. Methods A comprehensive review of AI applications in dermatology was conducted, in both diagnostic and aesthetic fields. Traditional methods such as subjective surveys and hardware devices were analyzed and compared with emerging AI technologies. The limitations of current AI models were evaluated, and the need for standardized evaluation methods and diverse datasets was identified. Results AI has shown great potential in diagnosing skin diseases, particularly skin cancer. However, in aesthetic dermatology, traditional methods remain subjective and lack standardization, therefore limiting their effectiveness. Emerging AI applications in this field show promise, but they have significant limitations due to biased datasets and inconsistent evaluation methods. Conclusions To develop the potential of AI in aesthetic dermatology, it is crucial to create standardized evaluation methods, collect diverse datasets reflecting various ethnicities and ages, and educate practitioners on AI's utility and limitations. Addressing these challenges will improve diagnostic accuracy, better patient outcomes, and help integrate AI effectively into clinical practice.

The massive demand of the AI assist ophthalmic surgery will constitute an important factor in boosting accelerate precision medicine. In clinical practice, it is instrumental to update and review the considerable evidence of the current AI technologies utilized in the investigation of ophthalmic surgery involved in both the progression and innovation of precision medicine. Bibliographic databases including PubMed and Google Scholar were searched using keywords such as "ophthalmic surgery", "surgical selection", "candidate screening", and "robot-assisted surgery" to find articles about AI technology published from 2018 to 2023. In addition to the Editorials and letters to the editor, all types of approaches are considered. In this paper, we will provide an up-to-date review of artificial intelligence in eye surgery, with a specific focus on its application to candidate screening, surgery selection, postoperative prediction, and real-time intraoperative guidance.

Abstract:Within the field of cosmetic dermatology, several promising developments utilize artificial intelligence to better patient care. While many new treatments in cosmetic dermatology feature components of artificial intelligence, there is a knowledge gap within the field regarding the current and developing products featuring AI. We aim to highlight current and developing applications of artificial intelligence in cosmetic dermatology and provide insight into future modalities in this field. Methods include literature review, including peer-reviewed journal articles as well as product websites. In an age of medical and technological advancement, the utility of artificial intelligence models continues to grow.There are many new facets of artificial intelligence in cosmetic dermatology, marketed to both the consumer and the physician. With the development of customizable skin care, augmented reality applications, and at-home skin analysis tools, patients are empowered to be the masters of their cosmetic care. Artificial intelligence is utilized by physicians in new ways in their practices, with the advent of models for prediction of clinical outcome to treatments and tools for in-depth analysis of the patient's skin. Further research is required in the development of automated energy-based treatment devices and robotic-assisted treatments. Models for AI in cosmetic dermatology serve to increase patient involvement in their skin care decisions and have the ability to enhance the patient-physician experience. Dermatologists should be well-informed of the emerging technologies to better educate patients and enhance their clinical practice.
