Abstract:In recent decades, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) have become a common problem in healthcare facilities such as hospitals. As a result, researchers are currently developing nanocomposite coatings that are strengthened with antibacterial nanoparticles. In this research, a novel antibacterial bionanocomposite coating based on carboxymethyl cellulose polymer/copper oxide nanoparticles/carbon quantum dots was coated on medical grade 316 stainless steel by sol-gel dip-coating method. The effect of the concentration of nanocomposite components was investigated at four different levels to determine the best ratio with the most antibacterial activity. Structural characteristics of nanocomposite and coating were investigated using different analysis methods. The coating analysis showed that reinforcements are uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix. Antibacterial test of disc diffusion was performed by the Kirby-Bauer method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) antibacterial test. The results showed that bionanocomposite was effective in the MIC assays against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with MIC values of 25 mg/ml and >50 mg/ml, respectively. The inhibition zones for E. coli and S. aureus were 17 and 32 mm, respectively, at 10 μg/disc of gentamicin. SEM images displayed significant and evident alterations in the structure of bacterial morphology, indicating cellular damage.

Abstract:Chitosan-copper oxide (CHT-CuO) nanocomposite was synthesized using olive leaf extract (OLE) as reducing agent and CuSO4⋅5H2O as precursor. CHT-CuO nanocomposite was prepared using an in situ method in which OLE was added to a solution of chitosan and CuSO4⋅5H2O mixture in the ratio of 1:5 (v/v) and heated at a temperature of 90 °C. The obtained CHT-CuO nanocomposite was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM results indicated that CHT-CuO nanocomposite are spherical in shape with size ranging from 3.5 to 6.0 nm. Antibacterial activity of the synthesized nanocomposites was evaluated against Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus, Staphyloccous haemolytica and Micrococcus Luteus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas citronellolis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, kliebisella sp., Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Ralstonia pickettii) species by cup platting or disc diffusion method. Overall, against all tested bacterial strains, the diameters of the inhibition zone of the three nanocomposites fell between 6 and 24 mm, and the order of the antimicrobial activity was as follows: CuO-1.0 > CuO-0.5 > CuO-2.0. The reference antibiotic amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin showed greater activity based on the diameter of zones of inhibition (between 15–32 mm) except for S. heamolytica and P. citronellolis bacteria strains. The nanocomposites MIC/MBC were between 0.1 and 0.01% against all tested bacteria, except S. heamolityca (>0.1%). Based on MIC/MBC values, CuO-0.5 and CuO-1.0 were more active than CuO-2.0, in line with the observations from the disc diffusion experiment. The findings indicate that these nanocomposites are efficacious against bacteria; however, Gram-positive bacteria were less susceptible. The synthesized CHT-CuO nanocomposite shows promising antimicrobial activities and could be utilized as an antibacterial agent in packaging and medical applications.

Abstract:Gentamicin is a well-known that is drug effective against a wide range of microbes. It is not effective on some bacterial strains. The combination of gentamicin and other bioactive nanostructures can increase the biological properties of the nanocomposite while maintaining its biological properties. Microwave irradiation was utilized to synthesize novel nanocomposites in this study, which consisted of Zn-MOF, gentamicin, and oxidized chitosan. Its structure using EA, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, EDAX, BET, SEM, and TEM were characterized and confirmed. Antimicrobial evaluations were conducted on various bacterial strains according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute's standards and guidelines, and IZD, MIC, and MBC were reported. The antimicrobial studies resulted in interesting findings. In general, in antimicrobial activity, MIC of synthesized Zn-MOF/gentamicin/oxidized chitosan nanocomposites between 2 and 128 μg/mL, MBC of 4–256 μg/mL and IZD of 15.5–22.7 mm were observed. It was observed that synthesized Zn-MOF/gentamicin/oxidized chitosan nanocomposites were more effective on the strains where gentamicin was effective, and it is also effective on the strains where gentamicin was not effective. These results can be attributed to the loading of gentamicin on the nano substrate as well as the presence of natural bioactive polymer (oxidized chitosan) and the bioactive metal (zinc) in the structure of the final synthesized nanocomposite as well as high specific surface area, and being nano-sized.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a significant and pressing public health concern, posing serious challenges to effectively preventing and treating persistent diseases. Despite various efforts made in recent years to address this problem, the global trends of AMR continue to escalate without any indication of decline. As AMR is well-known for antibiotics, developing new materials such as metal containing compounds with different mechanisms of action is crucial to effectively address this challenge. Copper, silver, and chitosan in various forms have demonstrated significant biological activities and hold promise for applications in medicine and biotechnology. Exploring the biological properties of these nanoparticles is essential for innovative therapeutic approaches in treating bacterial and fungal infections, cancer, and other diseases. To this end, the present study aimed to synthesize silver@copper oxide (Ag@CuO) nanoparticles and its chitosan nanocomposite (Chi-Ag@CuO) to investigate their antimicrobial efficacy. Various established spectroscopic and microscopic methods were employed for characterization purposes, encompassing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Subsequently, the antimicrobial activity of the nanoparticles was assessed through MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration), MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration), and well-disk diffusion assays against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Candida albicans. The size of the CuO-NPs, Ag@CuO, and Chi-Ag@CuO NPs was found to be 70-120 nm with a spherical shape and an almost uniform distribution. The nanocomposites were found to possess a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 5 μg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 250 μg/mL. Moreover, these nanocomposites generated varying clear inhibition zones, with diameters ranging from a minimum of 9 ± 0.5 mm to a maximum of 25 ± 0.5 mm. Consequently, it is evident that the amalgamation of copper-silver-chitosan nanoparticles has exhibited noteworthy antimicrobial properties in the controlled laboratory environment, surpassing the performance of other types of nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel regularization method called Adversarial Noise Layer (ANL), which are able to significantly improve CNN’s generalization ability by adding carefully crafted noise into the intermediate layer activations. ANL can be easily implemented and integrated with most of the mainstream CNN-based models. We compared the effects of the different types of noise and visually demonstrate that our proposed adversarial noise instruct CNN models to learn to extract cleaner feature maps, which further reduce the risk of over-fitting. We also conclude that models trained with ANL are more robust to the adversarial examples generated by FGSM than the traditional adversarial training approaches.
Catechol-Functional Chitosan/Silver Nanoparticle Composite As A Highly Effective Antibacterial Agent with Species-Specific Mechanisms

Abstract:In this study, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) coated with catechol-conjugated chitosan (CSS) were prepared using green methods. Interestingly, we uncovered that CSS-coated Ag NPs (CSS-Ag NPs) exhibited a higher toxicity against gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria than against grampositive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. The differences revealed that the CSS-Ag NPs killed gram bacteria with distinct, species-specific mechanisms. The aim of this study is to further investigate these underlying mechanisms through a series of analyses. The ultrastructure and morphology of the bacteria before and after treatment with CSS-Ag NPs were observed. The results demonstrated the CSS-Ag NPs killed gram-positive bacteria through a disorganization of the cell wall and leakage of cytoplasmic content. In contrast, the primary mechanism of action on gram-negative bacteria was a change in membrane permeability, induced by adsorption of CSS-Ag NPs. The species-specific mechanisms are caused by structural differences in the cell walls of gram bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria are protected from CSS-Ag NPs by a thicker cell wall, while gram-negatives are more easily killed due to an interaction between a special outer membrane and the nanoparticles. Our study offers an in-depth understanding of the antibacterial behaviors of CSS-Ag NPs and provides insights into ultimately optimizing the design of Ag NPs for treatment of bacterial infections.
Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticle-Based Chitosan Nanocomposites Using Neowestiellopsis persica Strain A1387 and Characterization of Their Potential Antimicrobial Activity Against Oral Pathogen

Abstract:Today, overuse and unregulated application of antibiotics and antimicrobial agents have resulted in a substantial increase in drug-resistant pathogens. Therefore, there is a great need for innovative therapeutic methods that can replace ineffective antibiotics. Cyanobacteria are one of the most useful natural candidates in the biosynthesis of nanoparticles to face antibiotic resistance in pathogens. In this study, the antimicrobial effect of different concentrations of silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles based chitosan nanocomposites biosynthesized by Neowestiellopsis persica against oral pathogens was investigated. The NPs biosynthesis were characterized through UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Results of UV-visible Spectroscopy showed that the amount of absorption increased significantly with increasing time. The SEM and TEM images depict the size of the nanocomposite to be 78.74 to 74.29 and 100 nm respectively and spherical in shape. According to the results of the FT-IR spectrum, the peaks located at a wave number less than 800 cm -1 are related to the stretching vibration of metal-oxygen bonds in a crystal structure, where due to the presence of silver nanoparticles, these peaks can be related to the symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibration of Ag-O bonds. The results of XRD crystallography confirmed the success of the synthesis of microcoated silver nanoparticles by chitosan. The average crystal size of silver nanoparticles covered by chitosan was 17.6 nm. The antimicrobial efficacy of the biosynthesized AgNP nanocomposite showed that with the increase in the concentration of nanoparticles and nanoparticles coated with chitosan, the diameter of the growth halo increased significantly ( p < 0.05). Totally the results of this study confirmed that nanoparticle-based chitosan nanocomposites biosynthesized by cyanobacteria species can be converted into nanomedicine to meet future biomedical needs.
Enhancing physical characteristics and antibacterial efficacy of chitosan through investigation of microwave-assisted chemically formulated chitosan-coated ZnO and chitosan/ZnO physical composite

Abstract:This study investigates the creation and analysis of chitosan-zinc oxide (CS-ZnO) nanocomposites, exploring their effectiveness in inhibiting bacteria. Two synthesis approaches, physical and chemical, were utilized. The CS-ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, especially against Staphylococcus aureus , a Gram-positive bacterium. Chemically synthesized nanocomposites (CZ10 and CZ100) exhibited larger inhibition zones (16.4 mm and 18.7 mm) compared to physically prepared CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (12.2 mm and 13.8 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus . Moreover, CZ nanocomposites displayed enhanced thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures of 281°C and 290°C, surpassing CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (260°C and 258°C). The residual mass percentages at 800°C were significantly higher for CZ10 and CZ100 (58% and 61%) than for CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (36% and 34%). UV–Visible spectroscopy revealed reduced band gaps in the CS-ZnO nanocomposites, indicating improved light absorption. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed uniform dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles within the chitosan matrix. In conclusion, this research underscores the impressive antimicrobial potential of CS-ZnO nanocomposites, especially against Gram-positive bacteria, and highlights their enhanced thermal stability. These findings hold promise for diverse applications in industries such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, and materials science, contributing to the development of sustainable materials with robust antimicrobial properties.

Abstract:Numerous microbial species have caused infectious diseases worldwide, which have become a social burden and a menace to the community. So, there is a need to develop antimicrobial materials and specialized materials for biomedical applications. In the present investigation, we report the simple synthesis, the physicochemical, and antibacterial activity of Silver doped zinc sulfide (ZnS: Ag) capped with Chitosan (CS) to produce ZnS: Ag/CS bionanocomposites (BNCs). The prepared BNCs was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. According to the XRD results, ZnS: Ag/CS particles with semicrystalline chitosan/hexagonal ZnS phase structures and an average crystallite size in the range of 30-40 nm was formed. According to FESEM images, a spherical/hexagonal shape of ZnS: Ag particles embedded in the polymeric chitosan matrix. The colony counting method was employed to investigate the antibacterial activity on Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The results revealed that ZnS: Ag particles and ZnS: Ag/CS BNCs have stronger antibacterial activities than pure CS and ZnS. The reduction percentage of ZnS: Ag/CS BNCs against S. aureus and E. coli after 6 h of treatment was >99.9 % and 70 % respectively. These findings suggest that ZnS: Ag/CS BCs not only offer superior antimicrobial properties compared to individual ZnS and CS but also have great potential for advancing biomedical applications due to their enhanced antibacterial performance. The simplicity of the synthesis method and the use of non-toxic materials like chitosan make this a sustainable approach for developing antimicrobial agents, which is a key advantage of this study.
Hybrid materials based on chitosan functionalized with green synthesized copper nanoparticles: Physico-chemical and antimicrobial analysis

Abstract:Recently, the development of materials with antimicrobial properties has become a challenge under scrutiny. The incorporation of copper nanoparticles (NpCu) into a chitosan matrix appears to represent a viable strategy to contain the particles and prevent their oxidation. Regarding the physical properties, the nanocomposite films (CHCu) showed a decrease in the elongation at break (5 %) and an increase in the tensile strength of 10 % concerning chitosan films (control). They also showed solubility values lower than 5 % while the swelling diminished by 50 %, on average. The dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) of nanocomposites revealed two thermal events located at 113° and 178 °C, which matched the glass transitions of the CH-enriched phase and nanoparticles-enriched phase, respectively. In addition, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) detected a greater stability of the nanocomposites. Chitosan films and the NpCu-loaded nanocomposites demonstrated excellent antibacterial capacity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, proved through diffusion disc, zeta potential, and ATR-FTIR techniques. Additionally, the penetration of individual NpCu particles into bacterial cells and the leakage of cell content were verified by TEM. The mechanism of the antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites involved the interaction of chitosan with the bacterial outer membrane or cell wall and the diffusion of the NpCu through the cells. These materials could be applied in diverse fields of biology, medicine, or food packaging.
Chitosan coating fabricated through nanotopography and alkylation for the prevention of bacterial attachment and corrosion

Abstract:Although metallic materials are widely used in biomedical devices, most of them have no antibacterial property and exhibit corrosion-related problems in physiological environments. This study aimed to develop a biocide-free chitosan coating to inhibit bacterial adhesion and corrosion. First, a chitosan coating fabricated through nanotopography was formed on the surface of carbon steel by using soft imprinting technology. Next, hexanal was grafted onto the chitosan by using a Schiff base reaction. Nanomorphological assessments using scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy confirmed a concave width, depth, and bottom thickness of approximately 666, 242, and 208 nm, respectively. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed that hexanal was successfully grafted to chitosan. Finally, the surface hydrophobic properties, antibacterial adhesion, and electrochemical corrosion resistance of chitosan coatings with and without nanopatterning and hexanal grafting were investigated. The results indicated that the hydrophobic angle of chitosan with both nanopatterning and hexanal grafting exceeded 120° and that the hysteresis angle was only 20°, which may help inhibit the attachment of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. During an electrochemical corrosion test, chitosan with both nanopatterning and hexanal grafting exhibited the highest corrosion potential and the lowest corrosion current density, indicating improved corrosion resistance. These results suggest that imparting nanopatterning and alkylation properties to chitosan solves not only the problem of bacterial attachment to bare metal substrates but also the problem of corrosion.

Abstract:Research on preparing material via a greener approach paved the way to produce highly biocompatible nanoparticles for antibacterial and antifungal applications. These nanoparticles showed very good activity on some of the microbial elements; hence, it is used in food industries and food quality control divisions. The preparation of CuO, MgO, and CuO/MgO nanocomposite is discussed and its activity on some of the Gram-positive and Gram-negative programs is investigated. In this work, CuO, MgO, and CuO/MgO nanocomposite are prepared by using Madagascar periwinkle extract. The obtained microwave-irradiated powder samples are analyzed to identify their physio-chemical properties. The XRD pattern confirmed the phase purity and the sample of the crystalline nature. The UV-vis absorption spectra depict the band gap of CuO, MgO, and CuO/MgO nanocomposite. The presence of functional groups was confirmed using FTIR analysis. The agglomerated sphere-like morphology of the samples was confirmed by HRSEM analysis. According to the antibacterial investigation, pristine nanoparticles and their composite counterparts effectively combat both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Therefore, the green synthesized CuO, MgO, and CuO/MgO nanocomposite are analyzed for antibacterial applications.

Abstract:Background: Increased intake of drugs worldwide and the subsequent advent of resistance to existing antibiotics have globally threatened health organizations. To combat the problem of these drug-resistant infections, as an alternative approach, graphene (GN)-related nanomaterials have attracted significant interest because of their effective anti-microbial potential. The present study shows the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite of GN with carbon nitride viz. g- C3N4, g-C3N4-Cu, and GN@g-C3N4-Cu. Further, we investigated the anti-microbial potential of these nanocomposites against strains of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, viz., a multidrug- resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRPA), a methicillin-resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC33593 (MRSA), and an azole-sensitive fungal strain (Candida albicans ATCC14053). Methods: The morphological characterization of GN@g-C3N4-Cu nanocomposite was executed by scanning electron microscopy, whereas the elemental analysis and their distribution were studied by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and elemental mapping methods. Furthermore, the anti-microbial and antibiofilm efficacies of g-C3N4, g-C3N4-Cu, and GN@g-C3N4-Cu nanocomposites were evaluated by disc diffusion, two-fold serial micro broth dilution, and 96 well microtiter plate methods. Results: The ternary g-C3N4-Cu@GN, apart from the structures of g-C3N4-Cu, showed big sheets of GN. The observance of C, N, O, and Cu in the elemental analysis, as well as their uniform distribution in the mapping, indicated the successful fabrication of g-C3N4-Cu@GN. GN@g-C3N4-Cu followed by g-C3N4-Cu and (g-C3N4) exhibited significantly higher antimicrobial activity (zone of inhibition from 14.33 to 49.33 mm) against both the drug-resistant bacterial strains and azole-sensitive C. albicans. MICs of nanocomposites ranged from 32 -256 μg/ml against the tested strains. Whereas all three nanocomposites at sub-MICs (0.25 A- and 0.5 A- MICs) showed concentration- dependent inhibition of biofilm formation in MDRPA, MRSA, and C. albicans by allowing 11.35% to 32.59% biofilm formation. Conclusion: Our study highlights the enhanced efficiency of GN@g-C3N4-Cu nanocomposites as potential anti-microbial and antibiofilm agents to overcome the challenges of multi-drug-resistant bacteria and azole-sensitive fungi. Such kind of nanocomposites could be used to prevent nosocomial infections if coated on medical devices and food manufacturing instruments.

Abstract:We present a study of a range of cross-linked chitosan composites with potential antimicrobial applications. They were formed by cross-linking chitosan and siloxane networks and by introducing silver and gold nanoparticles (NPs). The aim was to investigate whether adding the metal NPs to the chitosan-siloxane composite would lead to a material with enhanced antimicrobial ability as compared to chitosan itself. The composites were synthesised in hydrogel form with the metal NPs embedded in the cross-linked chitosan network. Spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were employed to investigate the structural properties of the composite and the tensile strength of the structures was measured. It was found that the addition of metal NPs did not influence the mechanical strength of the composite. A crystal violet attachment assay results displayed a significant reduction in the attachment of <i>E. coli</i> to the cross-linked chitosan surfaces. Release profile tests suggest that the metal NPs do not contribute to the overall antimicrobial activity under neutral conditions. The contribution to the mechanical and antimicrobial properties from cross-linking with siloxane is significant, giving rise to a versatile, durable, antimicrobial material suitable for thin film formation, wound dressings or the coating of various surfaces where robustness and antimicrobial control are required.

Biocompatible Copper Oxide Nanoparticle Composites from Cellulose and Chitosan: Facile Synthesis, Unique Structure, and Antimicrobial Activity

Abstract:Copper in various forms has been known to have bactericidal activity. Challenges to its application include preventing mobilization of the copper, to both extend activity and avoid toxicity, and bioincompatibility of many candidate substrates for copper immobilization. Using a simple ionic liquid, butylmethylimmidazolium chloride as the solvent, we developed a facile and green method to synthesize biocompatible composites containing copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) from cellulose (CEL) and chitosan (CS) or CEL and keratin (KER). Spectroscopy and imaging results indicate that CEL, CS, and KER remained chemically intact and were homogeneously distributed in the composites with CuONPs with size of 22 ± 1 nm. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) suggests that some 25% of the EPR-detectable Cu(II) is present as a monomeric species, chemically anchored to the substrate by two or more nitrogen atoms, and, further, adopts a unique spatially oriented conformation when incorporated into the [CEL + CS] composite but not in the [CEL + KER] composite. The remaining 75% of EPR-detectable Cu(II) exhibited extensive spin-spin interactions, consistent with Cu(II) aggregates and Cu(II) on the surface of CuONPs. At higher levels of added copper (>59 nmol/mg), the additional copper was EPR-silent, suggesting an additional phase in larger CuONPs, in which S > 0 spin states are either thermally inaccessible or very fast-relaxing. These data suggest that Cu(II) initially binds substrate via nitrogen atoms, from which CuONPs develop through aggregation of copper. The composites exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus; and highly resistant Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Candida albicans. Expectedly, the antibacterial activity was found to be correlated with the CuONPs content in the composites. More importantly, at CuONP concentration of 35 nmol/mg or lower, bactericidal activity of the composite was complemented by its biocompatibility with human fibroblasts.

Abstract:The present study explores the influence of Cobalt oxide nanoparticles(Co 3 O 4 NPs) on the physicochemical characteristics of Poly(vinylalcohol)/ Chitosan (PVA/Cs) blend. Using a variety of techniques, the pure blend and the nanocomposites' composition, structure, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties, and antibacterial activity were characterized. The Co 3 O 4 NPs were produced by precipitation method utilizing cobalt salt as the raw material. The crystalline nature of the nanoparticles and semi-crystalline behavior of the PVA/Cs are demonstrated by the XRD data. Adding nanoparticles to the pure blend reduced the intensity of the semi-crystalline. The rise in absorption intensity observed in UV-visible spectra upon the incorporation of Co 3 O 4 NPs into the PVA/Cs blend indicates an improved dispersion of the nanoparticles within the blend. When Co 3 O 4 NPs are added, the energy band-gap E gdir and E gind of PVA/Cs–Co 3 O 4 samples greatly decrease. According to TGA data, the thermal stability of nanocomposites was significantly higher than that of the PVA/Cs blend, and it rose as the concentration of nanoparticles increased. When compared to neat PVA/Cs film, mechanical property investigation of PVA/Cs–Co 3 O 4 nanocomposites films revealed enhanced features. The effectiveness of the PVA/Cs–Co 3 O 4 nanocomposite films in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms was assessed by evaluating their antimicrobial activity (ANMAC) against a range of bacteria and fungi. The inclusion of Co 3 O 4 NPs led to an increase in activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) bacteria as well as fungi Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger ( C. albicans and A. niger ). The addition of Co 3 O 4 NPs to the PVA/Cs blend effectively improved the material's optical, thermal, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. This remarkable improvement stems from the Co 3 O 4 NPs, which were introduced into the PVA/Cs blend in different amounts, leading to the development of novel nanocomposites. The outstanding properties of Co 3 O 4 /PVA/Cs nanocomposite films suggest their potential for applications in optoelectronics and food packaging.

Abstract:A dynamic chitosan-based ZnO nanocomposite (NC) was fabricated via a cost-effective formulation and an eco-friendly procedure utilizing Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) plant extract. This study investigates the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, together with the cytocompatibility aspects of chitosan-incorporated ZnO nanocomposite (CS-ZnO/CQE). The formation and structural morphology of the nanocomposites were examined using FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, XPS, BET, TGA, SEM, and TEM techniques. The antibacterial test results demonstrated the greatest inhibitory zone diameter against S. aureus (19 ± 1.00 mm) and E. coli (17 ± 1.05 mm), assessed through agar well diffusion method. Also, the composite exhibited a DPPH inhibition rate of 78.7 ± 0.34 %, indicating its high effectiveness in neutralizing free radicals. In addition, the nanocomposite exhibited less toxicity towards human erythrocytes, HDF and HEK-293 cells as a result of the biocompatibility exhibited by CS, ZnO, and CQ plant extract. Likewise, it has exceptional cell migratory capacity and possesses biodegradability factors. These observations strongly suggest the potential of CS-ZnO/CQE as a cutting-edge antibacterial and antioxidant agent to be implemented in the medical sector.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in eco-friendly and cost-effective organic-inorganic nanocomposites due to their alignment with the principles of "green" chemistry, as well as their biocompatibility and non-toxicity. This study focused on producing Chitosan-PEG-Fe 2 O 3 @NiO nanomagnetic composites to improve the stability, dielectric properties, and antimicrobial effectiveness of these nanocomposite materials. The process involved synthesizing Fe 2 O 3 @NiO via sol-gel and polymerizing chitosan-PEG. The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, TEM, FTIR, optical, dielectric, and VSM. Incorporating Fe 2 O 3 @NiO significantly improved stability, and the interaction with Fe2O3 during the sol-gel process facilitated the formation of NiFe 2 O 4 with an increase in the crystallinity within the chitosan-PEG matrix. The study examined optical and dielectric properties, highlighting that the 3 NiO-doped chitosan-PEG-Fe 2 O 3 composites had high electrical conductivity (1.8 ∗ 10 −3 S/cm) and a significant dielectric constant (10 6 at low frequencies). As the ratio of NiO NPs within the chitosan-PEG-Fe 2 O 3 increases, the energy band gap of chitosan-PEG-Fe 2 O 3 films decreases up to 3.7 eV. This decrease is owing to the quantum confinement effect. These composites also demonstrated improved antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus and higher activity in the presence of nanomagnetic particles. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of CS-PEG-Fe 2 O 3 /NiO NPs against ( Bacillus cereus , M. luteus , S. aureus and ( S. enterica , H. pylori , E. coli ) were (22–35 mm) and (21–34 mm), respectively.

Abstract:Biopolymers embedded with nanoparticles of metal oxides (MOs) demonstrate a wide range of bio-functions. Chitosan-incorporated MOs are an interesting class of support matrices for enhancing the biological function, compared to other support matrices. Therefore, the importance of this study lies in exploiting chitosan as a carrier not of one metal as in previous studies, but of two metals in the form of a nanocomposite to carry out several biological functions. The coprecipitation approach was employed to synthesize chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite in the present research. The characterization of chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite was performed to find out the morphology and dispersion properties of chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigation revealed that these were crystalline. Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectrum bands were viewed at 400/cm and 900/cm, due to the stretching vibration of Fe and Zn oxygen bond. TEM showed that chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite was of 20–95 nm in size. chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite exhibited inhibitory potential against Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli , and Candida albicans with inhibition zones of 25 ± 0.1, 28 ± 0.2, 27 ± 0.1, and 27 ± 0.2 mm, respectively while didn't inhibited Aspergillus niger . MIC value of nanocomposite was 15.62 ± 0.33 μg/mL for C. albicans, B. subtilis and E. coli , while it was 62.50 ± 0.66 μg/mL for Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Ranged values of nanocomposite MBC (15.62 ± 0.33 to 125 ± 1 μg/mL) were attributed to all tested bacteria. Different concentrations of chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite MBC (25, 50, and 75%) reflected anti-biofilm activity against E. coli (85.0, 93.2, and 96.0%), B. subtilis (84.88, 92.21, and 96.99%), S. aureus 81.64, 90.52, and 94.64%) and P. aurogenosa (90.11, 94.43, and 98.24%), respectively. The differences in the levels of antimicrobial activities may depend on the type of examined microbes. Antioxidant activity of chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite was recorded with excellent IC 50 values of 16.06 and 32.6 μg/mL using DPPH and ABTS scavenging, respectively. Wound heal by chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite was achieved with 100% compared to the untreated cells (76.75% of wound closer). The cytotoxicity outcomes showed that the IC 50 of the chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite was 564.32 ± 1.46 μg/mL normal WI-38 cells. Based on the achieved findings, the chitosan/Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO-nanocomposite is a very promising agent for perform pharmacological activities.

Abstract:nose a neurologic, endocrine, oncologic, gynecologic, or infectious disease because of the musculoskeletal symptoms associated with nonorthopaedic conditions. In this respect, the orthopaedic clinician must maintain a high index of suspicion for remarkable disease processes outside the orthopaedic differential diagnosis. Many neurologic conditions are first seen with musculoskeletal symptoms. The intimate relationship between the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems must be appreciated by the practicing clinician. One such disorder that may have simultaneously presenting neurologic and musculoskeletal symptoms is syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is a condition characterized by the existence of fluid-filled cavities in the spinal cord. The syringomyelic cavity, or syrinx, is formed by a disturbance in the normal cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow. Although classically associated with pes cavus and scoliosis, a syrinx can have variable presentations. This report describes 2 cases of syrinx presenting with localized symptoms in a single extremity. The consequences of missing the diagnosis of syringomyelia can be devastating because of the possible progression to neuropathic arthropathy. Despite its importance and likelihood of being seen by an orthopaedic surgeon, there is no recent review of the diagnosis in orthopaedic literature. The purpose of this communication is to describe the presentation of a syrinx in an athlete and review the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of syringomyelia for the practicing orthopaedic clinician. A discussion of the pathophysiology behind syrinx development is complex and well debated and, therefore, beyond the scope of this article. The interested reader is referred to a recent review by Greitz.
