Abstract:Reaction kinetics of H-atom abstraction from C 1 C 3 alcohols, including CH 3 OH, C 2 H 5 OH, NC 3 H 7 OH, IC 3 H 7 OH, and C 1 C 2 aldehydes, including CH 2 O, CH 3 CHO, by CH 3 OȮ radicals is investigated in this work through high-level ab initio calculations. Electronic structure optimizations are performed for all the stationary points with M06–2X/6−311++g(d,p) method. Quadratic configuration interaction method QCISD(T)/cc-pVXZ (where X = D and T) and Møller–Plesset perturbation theory MP2/cc-pVXZ (where X = D, T, and Q) are used to calculate single point energies. Subsequently, rate coefficients for all H-atom abstraction channels are determined using conventional transition state theory with unsymmetric tunneling corrections. These calculated results are updated to a recently updated model and then compared against expansive experimental datasets to investigate their influence on the model prediction performance. The updated model shows obvious discrepancies with the original model, where the updated model is less reactive for CH 3 CHO, C 2 H 5 OH, NC 3 H 7 OH, and IC 3 H 7 OH, while showing negligible differences for CH 3 OH and CH 2 O due to the lack of CH 3 OȮ radical formation. Sensitivity and flux analyses are further conducted, through which the difference between the studied species in their oxidation pathways and the relative importance of H-atom abstraction by CH 3 OȮ radicals is highlighted. With the updated rate parameters, the branching ratios of H-atom abstractions from CH 2 O and CH 3 CHO are significantly altered for CH 3 CHO, C 2 H 5 OH, NC 3 H 7 OH and IC 3 H 7 OH, with an obvious shift away from the abstraction channel by CH 3 OȮ. Further analyses highlight the critical roles of CH 2 O and CH 3 CHO chemistry as core chemistries for large hydrocarbons (e.g., carbon number > 1), which have been inadequately described in existing chemistry models. Systematic efforts are urgently needed to improve the existing CH 2 O and CH 3 CHO chemistries.

Abstract:The 1-methylallyl (C4H71-3) allylic radical is an important intermediate species in oxidation of linear C4 unsaturated hydrocarbons (1-butene, 2-butene, and 1,3-butadiene). This study reports the first high-level quantum chemical calculations for an undisclosed reaction class of this radical at intermediate to high temperatures: direct H-atom abstraction from terminal methyl group by molecular oxygen. Moreover, we systematically calculated rate constants for primary, secondary, and tertiary H-atom abstraction from the C4, C5, and C6 allylic radicals, respectively. Our results can be further used as rate rules for kinetic model development of unsaturated hydrocarbon oxidation. All calculations were implemented using two different ab initio solvers: Gaussian and ORCA, three sets of ab initio methods, and two different kinetic solvers: MultiWell and PAPR. Temperature dependent rate constants and thermochemistry were carried out based on transition state theory and statistical thermodynamics, respectively. H-atom abstraction from the primary site of C4 allylic radical is found to be faster than that from secondary and tertiary sites of C5 and C6 allylic radicals, contrary to common understanding. Barrier heights predicted by different ab initio solvers and methods are about 4–5 kcal/mol different, which results in a factor of 4–86 difference in rate constant predictions depending on the temperature. Using the Gaussian solver with Method 2 is found to be the most effective combination of predicting accurate rate constants when compared against experimental data. When comparing two kinetic solvers, both reaction rate coefficients and species thermochemistry show good agreement at a wide range of temperatures, except for the rate coefficients calculated for C5 and C6 reactions (about a factor of 5–17 and 3–4 differences were obtained, respectively). From an application point of view, we incorporated the calculation results into the AramcoMech2.0 model, and found systematic improvements for predicting ignition delay time, laminar flame speed and speciation targets of 2-butene oxidation.

Abstract:The H atom abstraction reactions from alkanes and alkenes by ṄH2 are decisive in predicting the combustion characteristics of NH3/CxHy binary fuels. Theoretical investigation is carried out on the energy barriers of H atom abstraction reactions from C1-C4 alkanes/alkenes by ṄH2 radicals at the QCISD(T)/CBS//M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Single-point energies of each species are computed using QCISD(T)/cc-pVDZ, TZ level of theories with basis set corrections from MP2/cc-pVDZ, TZ, and QZ methods. One-dimensional hindered rotor potentials are obtained by the M06-2X/cc-pVTZ method with 10° increment. Rate constants of each channel across temperatures of 298.15-2000 K are calculated by solving the RRKM/Master Equation with conventional transition state theory. For alkanes, rate constants order follows ktertiary> ksecondary> kprimary, while for alkenes the order follows kallylic> kprimary> kvinylic. Among the vinylic carbon sites within the same alkene species, the hydrogen atom sharing the same carbon with the allylic carbon on the C-C double bond is the preferred site for the H atom abstraction reaction. The branching ratio results indicate that the abstraction from tertiary or secondary carbon sites on alkanes and allylic carbon sites on alkenes are dominating during the investigated temperature range but become less important as the temperature increases. The data provided in this work are in good agreement with the literature data, but for the ṄH2+alkenes system, the literature data are scarce and further investigation is needed.

Abstract:This work explores theoretically the gas phase oxidation of allyl methyl sulfide (AMS, H 2 CCHCH 2 SCH 3 ) initiated by • OH radicals, focusing on the H-abstraction pathway at the M06-2X-D3/aug-cc-pVTZ and MN15/aug-cc-pVTZ levels of theory ( m06Tz and mn15Tz ). The formation of a prereactive complex (PRC) is involved in H-abstraction processes with two potential directions of approach for the OH radical, denoted as "α" and "β". The PRCs, demonstrate increased reactivity, primarily due to the interaction between the sulfur atoms and the hydroxyl hydrogen. A scheme for the H-abstraction mechanism that supports the experimentally identified products and predicts the formation of some S-containing low volatility products is proposed. The comparison of the potential energy surface (PES) between the double bond addition and H-abstraction paths in the AMS molecule shows that at the m06Tz level of theory, the H-abstraction on C3 and the addition to C1 have nearly the same profile of energy, while at the mn15Tz level, the minimum energy channel is the addition to C1. The theoretical rate coefficient for each reaction channel was calculated, considering the formation of a PRC prior to reaching the transition state of each channel and assuming thermal equilibrium between reactants and the PRC. The rate constants were calculated in a multi-TS/multi-conformer way at the SVECV-f12/ m06Tz and SVECV-f12/ mn15Tz levels of theory. The SVECV-f12 method is consistent in its predictions in both systems and exhibits only minor deviations from the experimental rate constants. Despite some specific differences due to the DFT method supporting the SVECV-f12 calculations, both methodologies predict a significant H-abstraction contribution in the AMS + OH gas phase reaction, which explains the high formation yield for acrolein determined experimentally.

Abstract:The H-abstraction reactions from di-n-propyl ether (DPE) by radicals are significant in the DPE oxidation process. However, corresponding rate constants only rely on either analogy from alcohols or estimation from alkanes due to the lack of experimental and theoretical studies. In current work, thermochemistry and kinetics of DPE oxidation by the H, CH3, HO2 and OH radicals have been studied using the composite methods (CBS-QB3 and G4). Four H-abstraction reaction systems have been discussed, all of them occur through energy barriers of −5.4–20.5 kcal/mol. The energy barriers increase in the order α < β < γ at CBS-QB3 and G4 levels. The hydrogen-bond reactant complexes, RCβHO2, RCαOH, RCβOH and RCγOH, are identified in the entrance channel for the H-abstraction by HO2 and OH radicals. The rate constants for target reactions are calculated with the transition state theory and canonical variational transition state theory over a broad temperature range of 400–1400 K. Rate constants and branching ratios show that the H-abstraction reaction from Cα is the dominant reaction over the investigated temperature range. The total rate constants of the DPE + OH system have been fitted as follows: k = 1105 × T 3.185 exp(1720/T) (cm3 mol−1 s−1). The G4 data well reproduce the available experimental rate constant for DPE + OH system. The rate constants of H-abstraction reactions in the kinetic model of Serinyel et al. [Fuel 263 (2020) 116554] are modified based on the current calculated results to obtain a revised model. A validation for the revised model against the jet-stirred reactor (JSR) measurements from the literature are also provided, and the modified mechanism shows good performances to predict the JSR data. Reaction pathway and sensitivity analyses are performed to identify the fuel consumption paths and key reactions in oxidation process of DPE.

Abstract:The kinetics of H-abstraction reactions of monomethylhydrazine (MMH) by OH radical was investigated using ab initio transition state theory with correction of quantum mechanical tunneling effects. The stationary points of the potential energy surfaces were calculated at the QCISD (T)/CBS level. Abstract:Aromatic aldehydes are a major gas-phase constitutes of troposphere, which play a fundamental role in the chemistry of polluted regions. They can be directly emitted from vast variety of anthropogenic and biogenic sources. Apart from those, they could be also transformed in the atmosphere by photolysis and/or can get oxidized in presence of atmospheric oxidants such as radicals, yielding hydroxyaldehydes as the main final products. Even though the formation process takes place primarily in the atmospheric gas phase, the produced hydroxyaldehydes are considered as water-soluble compounds due to their Henry’s Law constants, and are therefore capable of undergoing efficient phase transfer to cloud droplets, fog, haze, rain, and deliquescent aerosols, commonly referred as atmospheric aqueous phase. Dissolved organic gases can additionally be oxidized in the aqueous phase, where they contribute to aerosol mass production during cloud evaporation event, forming aqueous-phase secondary organic aerosols (aqSOAs). The potential formation of SOAs in the aqueous phase was estimated by a model prediction, where net global production rate accounts for 10 Tg yr-1 to 50 Tr yr-1. Additionally, there is a lack of aqueous-phase kinetic data with atmospherically relevant radicals that could be used to achieve an accurate description and model prediction of multiphase tropospheric chemistry. Accordingly, in the present study the second-order rate constants for the oxidation reactions of glyceraldehyde, glycolaldehyde, and lactaldehyde with hydroxyl radicals (‧OH), sulfate radicals (SO4‧-), and nitrate radicals (NO3‧) in the aqueous phase were determined. In case of glycolaldehyde, the subsequent radical-initiated second-order rate constants (k2nd) at 298 K were obtained: k(‧OH) = (1.3 ± 0.1) × 109 L mol-1 s-1, k(SO4‧‑) = (2.9 ± 0.2) × 107 L mol‑1 s-1, and k(NO3‧) = (3.9 ±1.1) × 106 L mol-1 s-1, respectively. In addition, the temperature-dependencies of the rate constants were determined in ranges between 278 and 318 K. Through the obtained rate constants and their T-dependencies, the degradation of hydroxyaldehydes with atmospherically relevant radicals in the aqueous-phase can be currently assigned, by which the predictive capabilities of models could be reached. These findings reveal the importance of aqueous phase conversion of gaseous oxidation products, contributing to the budget of important tropospheric aqueous phase carbonyls, which are important for better understanding the formation pathway of in-cloud processed SOAs.

Abstract:This is a case report on a nulliparous women, who developed the HELLP syndrome following intravenous tocolysis. Contrary to our expectations, neither schistocytes nor signs of intravasal coagulation were apparent; however, we found Fenoterol-associated anti-erythrocyte antibodies. However, the low titre of these antibodies does not explain the massive haemolysis. It is suggested, that these antibodies represent a causal factor in developing the HELLP syndrome.
[Effects of Electric Stimulation and Biofeedback for Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercise in Women with Vaginal Rejuvenation Women].

Abstract:PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pelvic floor muscle exercise using electric stimulation and biofeedback on maximum pressure of vaginal contraction, vaginal contraction duration and sexual function in women who have had vaginal rejuvenation. METHODS The research design was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design study. Participants in this study were women who had vaginal rejuvenation at C obstetrics and gynecology hospital. The 15 participants in the experimental group were given pelvic floor muscle exercise using electric stimulation and biofeedback and the 15 participants in the control group received self pelvic floor muscle exercise. RESULTS For maximum pressure of vaginal contraction, the experimental group showed a statistically significant increase compared to than the control group (t=5.96, p<.001). For vaginal contraction duration, the experimental group also showed a statistically significant increase compared to the control group (t=3.23, p=.003). For women's sexual function, the experimental group showed a significant increase when compared to the control group in total sexual function scores (t=3.41, p=.002). CONCLUSION The results indicate that pelvic floor muscle exercise with electric stimulation and biofeedback after vaginal rejuvenation is effective in strengthening vaginal contraction pressure, vaginal contraction and that it also positively functions to increase women's sexual function.

Reaction Kinetics of OH Radicals with Glutaric Acid and Adipic Acid in the Aqueous Phase

Abstract:Dicarboxylic acids (DCAs) are widely distributed in atmospheric aerosols and cloud droplets and are mainly formed by the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For example, glutaric acid and adipic acid are two kinds of the DCAs that can be oxidized by hydroxyl radical (‧OH) reactions in the aqueous phase of aerosols and droplets. In the present study, the temperature- and pH-dependent rate constants of the aqueous OH radical reactions of the two DCAs were investigated by a laser flash photolysis-long path absorption setup using the competition kinetics method. Based on speciation calculations, the OH radical reaction rate constants of the fully protonated (H2A), deprotonated (HA-) and fully deprotonated (A2-) forms of the two DCAs were determined. The following Arrhenius expressions for the T-dependency of the OH radical reaction of glutaric acid, k(T, H2A) = (3.9 ± 0.1) × 1010 × exp[(-1270 ± 200 K)/T], k(T, HA-) = (2.3 ± 0.1) × 1011 × exp[(-1660 ± 190 K)/T], k(T, A2-) = (1.4 ± 0.1) × 1011 × exp[(-1400 ± 170 K)/T] and adipic acid, k(T, H2A) = (7.5 ± 0.2) × 1010 × exp[(-1210 ± 170 K)/T], k(T, HA-) = (9.5 ± 0.3) × 1010 × exp[(-1200 ± 200 K)/T], k(T, A2-) = (8.7 ± 0.2) × 1010 × exp[(-1100 ± 170 K)/T] (in unit of L mol-1 s-1) were derived.The energy barriers of the H-atom abstractions were simulated by the Density Functional Theory calculations run with the GAUSSIAN package using the M06-2X method and the basis set m062x/6-311++g(3df,2p). The results showed that the energy barriers were lower at the Cβ-atoms and are higher at the Cα-atoms of the two DCAs, clearly suggesting that the H-atom abstractions occurred predominately at the Cβ-atoms. In addition, the ionizations can enhance the electrostatic effects of the carboxyl groups, significantly reducing the energy barriers, leading to the order of OH radical reactivity as < < . This study intends to better characterize the losing processes of glutaric acid and adipic acid in atmospheres.

Abstract:H-atom abstraction by methoxy radical (CH 3 Ȯ) plays an important role in capturing the kinetics of reactions between gasoline components and alcohols. This study focuses on determining the reaction rates and thermodynamic properties of methoxy radical reactions with five gasoline fuel components: n-heptane, iso-octane, 1-hexene, cyclopentane and toluene. Electronic structure calculations were performed for all the stationary points with M06-2X/6−311++g(d,p) method. G3 composite method with atomization method is used for determining Δ f H 0 of all the closed shell and radical species, using which the necessary thermodynamic data of all the species was determined. Coupled cluster theory QCISD(T)/cc-pVXZ (where X = D and T) and Møller–Plesset perturbation theory MP2/cc-pVXZ (where X = D, T and Q) were used to calculate single point energies. Subsequently, rate constants for all hydrogen atom abstraction channels have been performed using conventional transition state theory with unsymmetric tunneling corrections. A systematic comparison of rates for abstraction from different sites within the same species and same site from different species is done in order to get insights into this reaction class. The computed thermodynamic properties and rate constants were incorporated in to a recent gasoline mechanism to investigate the impact of the calculations performed in this work. A shift in predicted NTC (negative temperature coefficient) behavior and significant reduction in model reactivity is observed upon incorporating the rates calculated herein.

Reactivity Of Aqueous Phase Hydroxyl Radical With Halogenated Carboxylate Anions: Experimental And Theoretical Studies

Abstract:With concerns about emerging contaminants increasing, advanced oxidation processes have become attractive technologies because of potential mineralization of these contaminants via radical involved reactions that are induced by highly reactive hydroxyl radical. Considering the expensive and time-consuming experimental studies of degradation intermediates and byproduct, there is a need to develop a first-principles computer-based kinetic model that predict reaction pathways and associated reaction rate constants. In this study, we measured temperature-dependent hydroxyl radical reaction rate constants for a series of haloacetate ions and obtained their Arrhenius kinetic parameters. We found a linear correlation between these reaction rate constants and theoretically calculated aqueous-phase free energies of activation. To understand the quantitative effects on entropy of solvation due to solvent water molecules, we calculate each portion of the entropic energies that contribute to the overall aqueous phase entropy of activation; cavity formation is a dominant portion. For the series of reactions of hydroxyl radical with carboxylate ions, the increase in the entropy of activation during the solvation process is approximately 10-15 cal mol(-1) K-1 because of interaction's with solvent water molecules and the transition state. Finally, charge distribution analysis for the aqueous-phase reactions of hydroxyl radical with acetate/haloacetate ions reveals that in the aqueous phase, the degree of polarizability at the transition state is less substantial than those that are in the gaseous phase resulting in a high charge density. In the presence of electronegative halogenated functional groups, the transition state is less polarized and hydrogen bonding interactions are expected to be weaker.
Multistructural Variational Reaction Kinetics of the Simplest Unsaturated Methyl Ester: H-Abstraction from Methyl Acrylate by H, OH, CH3, and HO2 Radicals.

Abstract:The H-abstraction reaction kinetics of methyl acrylate (MA) + H/OH/CH3/HO2 radicals have been investigated theoretically in the present work. For these reactions, the reaction energies and barrier heights are first computed using several density functionals and compared to the coupled cluster CCSD(T)-F12/jun-cc-pVTZ benchmark calculations. The M062X/maug-cc-pVTZ method shows the best performance with the smallest mean unsigned deviation (MUD) of 0.42 kcal mol-1. Combined with the electronic structure calculations using the M062X/maug-cc-pVTZ method, the multistructural canonical variational transition-state theory (MS-CVT) with small-curvature tunneling (SCT) is employed to calculate the reaction rate constants at 500-2000 K. The variational effect is between 0.56 and 1.0, the multistructural torsional anharmonicity factor ranges from 0.004 to 4.57, and the tunneling coefficient is in the range of 0.5-4.70. Notably, given the existence of reactant complexes (RCs) between reactants and transition states for the reaction systems MA + OH/HO2, we further compare the rate constants under the low-pressure limit (LPL) kinetic model, which treats the reaction as a single-step process and neglects RCs, and the pre-equilibrium model, which takes RCs into account in the reaction and treats the reaction as a two-step process. The rate constants calculated by these two models are similar within the combustion temperature range, and apparent differences occur at lower temperatures. In addition, we determine the branching ratios as a function of temperature and find that the methyl site (S3) abstractions by OH and H radicals are dominant in the low- and high-temperature ranges, respectively. Moreover, we update the kinetic model with the calculated H-abstraction rate constants to simulate the ignition delay times of MA. The simulations of the updated model are in good agreement with experimental results. The accurate reaction kinetics determined in this work are useful for the understanding and prediction of consumption branching fractions and ignition properties of the unsaturated methyl esters.
Kinetics of Hydrogen Abstraction Reactions of Butene Isomers by OH Radical.

Abstract:The rate coefficients of H-abstraction reactions of butene isomers by the OH radical were determined by both canonical variational transition-state theory and transition-state theory, with potential energy surfaces calculated at the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p)//BH&HLYP/6-311G(d,p) level and CCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p)//BH&HLYP/cc-pVTZ level and quantum mechanical tunneling effect corrected by either the small-curvature tunneling method or the Eckart method. While 1-butene contains allylic, vinylic, and alkyl hydrogens that can be abstracted to form different butene radicals, results reveal that s-allylic H-abstraction channels have low and broad energy barriers, and they are the most dominant channels which can occur via direct and indirect H-abstraction channels. For the indirect H-abstraction s-allylic channel, the reaction can proceed via forming two van der Waals prereactive complexes with energies that are 2.7-2.8 kcal mol(-1) lower than that of the entrance channel at 0 K. Assuming that neither mixing nor crossover occurs between different reaction pathways, the overall rate coefficient was calculated by summing the rate coefficients of the s-allyic, methyl, and vinyl H-abstraction paths and found to agree well with the experimentally measured OH disappearance rate. Furthermore, the rate coefficients of p-allylic H abstraction of cis-2-butene, trans-2-butene, and isobutene by the OH radical were also determined at 300-1500 K, with results analyzed and compared with available experimental data.

Abstract:To extend the rule‐based approach for hydrogen abstraction reactions from oxygenated compounds, a systematic investigation was performed to examine the reactivity of gas‐phase hydrogen abstraction reactions from alkyl groups (methyl and ethyl groups) bound to oxygen atoms in five types of oxygenated compounds (alcohols, ethers, formate esters, acetate esters, and carbonate esters) by H atoms and HO2 radicals comprehensively considering rotational conformers. Quantum chemical calculations were conducted at the CBS‐QB3 level for stationary points. Rate constants were determined employing conventional transition state theory (TST). For hydrogen abstraction reactions by H, the rotational conformer distribution partition function was employed to approximate partition functions, owing to the similarity in vibrational energy‐level structures among conformers. In hydrogen abstraction reactions by HO2, the vibrational structures of transition‐state (TS) conformers varied significantly due to the hydrogen bonding, leading to an inappropriate evaluation of rate constants when using the lowest‐energy conformer as a representative. Therefore, the rate constants were calculated by the multi‐structural TST. It was revealed that the differences in functional groups containing O atoms mainly affect the bond dissociation energies of the C–H bonds and the activation energies of hydrogen abstraction reactions only when the C atoms are adjacent to the O atoms. Additionally, it was found that hydrogen bonds formed in the TSs show minor effect on rate parameters for the overall rate constants, apart from the reduction of the pre‐exponential factors for the H‐abstraction reactions from the methylene position of ethyl groups. The comparison with the rate constants from previous studies showed reasonable results, indicating that the rate constants in this study, which thoroughly consider rotational conformers, can be the current best estimates.

Reaction Profiles and Kinetics for Radical-Radical Hydrogen Abstraction via Multireference Coupled Cluster Theory

Abstract:Radical-radical abstractions in hydrocarbon oxidation chemistry are disproportionation reactions that are generally exothermic with little or no barrier yet are underappreciated and poorly studied. Such challenging multireference electronic structure problems are tackled here using the recently developed state-specific multireference coupled cluster methods Mk-MRCCSD and Mk-MRCCSD(T), as well as the companion perturbation theory Mk-MRPT2 and the established MRCISD, MRCISD+Q, and CASPT2 approaches. Reaction paths are investigated for five prototypes involving radical-radical hydrogen abstraction: H + BeH → H2+ Be, H + NH2 → H2 + NH, CH3 + C2H5 → CH4 + C2H4, H + C2H5 → H2 + C2H4, and H + HCO → H2 + CO. Full configuration interaction (FCI) benchmark computations for the H + BeH, H + NH2, and H + HCO reactions prove that Mk-MRCCSD(T) provides superior accuracy for the interaction energies in the entrance channel, with mean absolute errors less than 0.3 kcal mol-1 and percentage deviations less than 10% over the fragment separations of relevance to kinetics. To facilitate combustion studies, energetics for the CH3 + C2H5, H + C2H5, and H + HCO reactions were computed at each level of theory with correlation-consistent basis sets (cc-pVXZ, X = T, Q, 5) and extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. These CBS energies were coupled with CASPT2 projected vibrational frequencies along a minimum energy path to obtain rate constants for these three reactions. The rigorous Mk-MRCCSD(T)/CBS results demonstrate unequivocally that these three reactions proceed with no barrier in the entrance channel, contrary to some earlier predictions. Mk-MRCCSD(T) also reveals that the economical CASPT2 method performs well for large interfragment separations but may deteriorate substantially at shorter distances.
OH radical in water from ab initio molecular dynamics simulation employing hybrid functionals

Abstract:This work presents for the first time ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for the OH⋆-(H2O)n cluster with n = 0–5 and the OH radical in the bulk phase, using B3LYP as a functional. Furthermore, for OH⋆-w31, simulations with PBE0 and HSE03 are also investigated. In all systems, the OH radical is a stronger hydrogen bond donor than acceptor; a stronger hydrogen bond donor than water and a weaker hydrogen bond acceptor than water. Radial distribution functions (RDFs) reveal that for all systems, neither a hemibond between radical and water nor hydrogen abstraction is present. Comparisons with past simulations indicate that BLYP leads to artifacts, such as overstructuring of water in OH⋆-w31 and the hemibonded structure. In order to have strong hydrogen bonds with an extensive hydrogen bond network, at least four water molecules are necessary. RDFs as well as continuous dimer existence autocorrelation functions show that the OH radical is not disrupting the hydrogen bond network of water. In the bulk phase, the acceptor interaction is a very low probable interaction, whereas in the gas phase, it has a higher probability. The orientation of the water molecule around the OH radical is in the bulk liquid phase much less and in the gas phase enhanced, especially for the OH radical acting as a hydrogen bond donor toward one water molecule. PBE0 results for OH⋆-w31 in a strong hydrogen bond donor interaction compared to HSE03 and B3LYP, which has the weakest interaction. HSE03 leads to strong O–H interactions in OH⋆-w31, followed by PBE0 and B3LYP.

Abstract:The abstraction reaction of hydrogen from formaldehyde by OH radical plays an important role in formaldehyde oxidation. The reaction involves a bimolecular association to form a chemically activated hydrogen-bonded reaction complex followed by a unimolecular reaction of the complex to generate the products. The reaction rate is usually considered to be pressure-independent by assuming equilibrium between the reactants and the complex. However, our nonequilibrium calculations based on the chemically significant eigenmode of the master equation, carried out with our recently developed TUMME program, indicate that the reaction complex makes the rate constant dependent on pressure at low temperatures (T < 200 K). The calculations include anharmonicity, variational effects, and multi-dimensional tunneling. We find that the reaction rate constant reaches a low-pressure limit at pressures below 10 Torr over the whole investigated temperature range (20-1800 K), which explains why the available low-temperature experiments, which are for pressures below 2 Torr, did not observe the pressure dependence. A new extension of the TUMME master-equation program is used to explore the time evolutions of the concentrations of the OH radical and the complex under pseudo-first-order conditions. The time-dependent evolution of the concentrations of the complex at a low temperature provide direct evidence for the stabilization of the reaction complex at high pressures, and it shows the negligible role of the stabilized reaction complex at low pressures. The picture that emerges is qualitatively consistent with our previous study of the reaction of methanol with OH in that the tunneling in the unimolecular step from the complex to the products affects the phenomenological reaction rate constants differently at high and low pressures and leads to a significant pressure effect.

Abstract:The hydroperoxyalkyl radicals (.QOOH) are known to play a significant role in combustion and tropospheric processes, yet their direct spectroscopic detection remains challenging. In this study, we investigate molecular stereo-electronic effects influencing the kinetic and thermodynamic stability of a .QOOH along its formation path from the precursor, alkylperoxyl radical (ROO.), and the depletion path resulting in the formation of cyclic ether + .OH. We focus on reactive intermediates encountered in the oxidation of acyclic hydrocarbon radicals: ethyl, isopropyl, isobutyl, tert-butyl, neopentyl, and their alicyclic counterparts: cyclohexyl, cyclohexenyl, and cyclohexadienyl. We report reaction energies and barriers calculated with the highly accurate method Weizmann-1 (W1) for the channels: ROO. <=> .QOOH, ROO. <=> alkene + .OOH, .QOOH <=> alkene + .OOH, and .QOOH <=> cyclic ether + .OH. Using W1 results as a reference, we have systematically benchmarked the accuracy of popular density functional theory (DFT), composite thermochemistry methods, and an explicitly correlated coupled-cluster method. We ascertain inductive, resonance, and steric effects on the overall stability of .QOOH and computationally investigate the possibility of forming more stable species. With new reactions as test cases, we probe the capacity of various ab initio methods to yield quantitative insights on the elementary steps of combustion.
