Abstract:Hydrogen energy storage systems (HESS) play an essential role in Microgrid (MG) systems to address the inherent generation characteristics of renewable energy sources. Also, the integration of Demand Response (DR) into the Energy Management System (EMS) of a renewable-based Multi-Microgrid (MMG) can lead to substantial technical and economic benefits. This paper proposes a modified optimization algorithm for optimizing MMG Energy Management (EM). The proposed algorithm is a modified version of the Student Psychology-Based Optimization (SPBO) technique called Modified Student Psychology-Based Optimization (MSPBO). This modification aims to improve issues such as slow convergence, low solution accuracy, lack of diversity, and getting stuck in local optima. The proposed MSPBO method incorporates a local escape operator and a collaborative student class to achieve a better balance between exploiting known solutions and exploring new possibilities. The MSPBO algorithm is applied to address the EM challenge within a MMG context. Considering the integration of renewable sources as Wind turbines and solar photovoltaic and the HESS, the EM problem is formulated as a two-stage multi-objective optimization: minimizing the operating cost of conventional generators and power transactions cost in addition to the cost of HESS, while maximizing operator benefits and peak load reduction. This multi-objective problem is tackled using a hybrid ε-lexicography–weighted-sum approach that avoids the need for normalization. The performance of the proposed MSPBO is evaluated using CEC 2017 benchmark test functions, utilizing various statistical measures such as best, average, worst, rank, and standard deviation (SD) of fitness values, along with Wilcoxon's rank-sum test. The MSPBO technique is compared with other optimization algorithms for these test functions, highlighting its efficiency and adeptness in achieving a harmonious trade-off between exploiting known solutions and exploring new ones. Furthermore, the MSPBO method is applied to solve two case studies. In Case 1, which involves a single stage with conventional demand response optimization, the results achieved using MSPBO are benchmarked against other optimization techniques, revealing its superior efficacy in addressing the EM challenge. In Case 2, a more complex two-stage multi-objective problem is tackled using MSPBO, and the assessment of the integration of HESS in the MMG is evaluated. In the second stage, there is a notable enhancement in peak load reduction percentage (PRP), from 13.9% to 16.13% without the HESS and from 12.68% to 16.46% with the integration of HESS.

Abstract:Optimal inclusion of a photovoltaic system and wind energy resources in electrical grids is a strenuous task due to the continuous variation of their output powers and stochastic nature. Thus, it is mandatory to consider the variations of the Renewable energy resources (RERs) for efficient energy management in the electric system. The aim of the paper is to solve the energy management of a micro-grid (MG) connected to the main power system considering the variations of load demand, photovoltaic (PV), and wind turbine (WT) under deterministic and probabilistic conditions. The energy management problem is solved using an efficient algorithm, namely equilibrium optimizer (EO), for a multi-objective function which includes cost minimization, voltage profile improvement, and voltage stability improvement. The simulation results reveal that the optimal installation of a grid-connected PV unit and WT can considerably reduce the total cost and enhance system performance. In addition to that, EO is superior to both whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and sine cosine algorithm (SCA) in terms of the reported objective function.

Abstract:This study introduces Gradient Jellyfish search optimization (GJSO) as a new optimization approach for optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) in electric networks. The GJSO methodology enhances standard JSO techniques by integrating the Local Escaping Operator. Simulations show GJSO outperforms standard algorithms in terms of accuracy and stability, indicating its potential for real‐world applications in electric network safety and economics. An effective optimization technique, called gradient jellyfish search optimizer (GJSO), is introduced here to address the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) issue in electric networks. The ORPD problem is a complex non‐linear optimization issue involving integrated variables, aimed at achieving safe and cost‐effective operation of the system by determining optimal values for generator voltage, tap changers of transformers, and reactive power compensation. The performance of the original JSO technique is enhanced by integrating the local escaping operator into the GJSO approach. The effectiveness of the GJSO methodology is evaluated via comparison with two existing methodologies: the original jellyfish search optimizer and the equilibrium optimizer. Jellyfish search optimizer is a meta‐heuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the movement of jellyfish in the water, while equilibrium optimizer draws inspiration from game theory and equilibrium concepts. Simulations were conducted using typical IEEE‐30 bus and IEEE‐57 bus systems to validate the performance of the GJSO methodology. Two versions of the objective function are examined: minimizing line power loss and minimizing total voltage deviations at the buses. The simulation results demonstrated that the GJSO algorithm exhibited superior performance in terms of accuracy and stability compared to the standard jellyfish search optimizer and equilibrium optimizer algorithms.

Abstract:<p>The evolution of clean energy technology brings notable favor to the microgrid to tackle the ever‐increasing energy demand. However, the inconsistent and dynamic behavior of renewable sources necessitates the incorporation of an energy management scheme (EMS) to coordinate the distributed components in microgrid efficiently along with ensuring high efficiency and stability over the network. Thus, the proposed energy management approach is designed to regulate the energy flow optimally and for balancing the generation‐demand ratio in a distributed network. With this scenario, a new muddy soil fish optimization algorithm (MSFOA) is developed with the foraging pattern of fishes aiming at minimizing the production overheads and curtail the expenses of energy import from the grid together with considering system constraints. The proposed EMS is implemented in a microgrid framework that includes solar PV, wind, diesel generator, and energy storage units. Moreover, several aspects of case studies under isolated and grid‐tied scenarios substantiate the potentiality of the presented MSFOA approach. The simulation output illustrates the outstanding performance of the proposed MSFOA technique over convergence speed and solution precision with reasonably low execution time resulted in obtaining more profit than the existing method. Besides, the numerical output exhibits that the proposed MSFOA technique minimizes the overall production cost compared to the heuristic‐based model predictive technique, predictor‐corrector proximal multiplier, and improved differential search algorithm by 3.76%, 8.32%, and 19.3%, respectively. Finally, the proposed optimization technique has been deployed in a small testbed system to demonstrate the feasibility over real‐time conditions.</p>

Abstract:Integrating photovoltaic (PV) systems and wind energy resources (WERs) into microgrids presents challenges due to their inherent unpredictability. This paper proposes deterministic and probabilistic sustainable energy management (SEM) solutions for microgrids connected to the main power system. A prairie dog optimization (PDO) algorithm is utilized to optimize energy utilization, grid stability, and the integration of renewable energy resources (RERs). The algorithm addresses cost reduction, voltage profile improvement, and optimal sizing of RERs. Simulation results demonstrate that incorporating grid-connected PV units and wind turbines (WTs) strategically reduces total costs and enhances system performance. The PDO method outperforms other optimization algorithms, such as Equilibrium Optimizer (EO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), in SEM for microgrids due to its consistent convergence properties. Under deterministic settings, optimal integration of RERs reduces overall costs by 52%, with a significant 7.49% improvement in voltage profile index. In probabilistic scenarios, a remarkable 63.68% reduction in overall costs and a 7.51% enhancement in voltage stability index are achieved. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of PDO in addressing SEM challenges in microgrid environments, showcasing superior performance over existing optimization techniques.

Abstract:This article proposes an enhanced quasi-reflection jellyfish optimization (QRJFO) algorithm for solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The multi-dimension objective functions are the fuel costs, transmission losses and pollutant emissions. Despite the simple structure of the jellyfish optimization algorithm, it requires significant exploitation and exploration control characteristics to support its capability. In the proposed QRJFO, a cluster is chosen randomly for every jellyfish from the population to reflect the social group that shares information in it. It varies from one to the next. The exploration phase is supported by introducing quasi-opposition-based learning. The performance of the proposed QRJFO algorithm is evaluated on the IEEE 57-bus, practical West Delta Region system and large-scale IEEE 118 bus. The simulation results demonstrate the quality of the solution and resilience of QRJFO. It is very significant for operating power systems from economic, technical and environmental perspectives.

Abstract:The slow dynamic response of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) to high load change during deficit periods must be considered. Therefore, integrating the hybrid system with energy storage devices like battery storage and/or a supercapacitor is necessary. To reduce the consumed hydrogen, an energy management strategy (EMS) based on the white shark optimizer (WSO) for photovoltaic/PEMFC/lithium-ion batteries/supercapacitors microgrid has been developed. The EMSs distribute the load demand among the photovoltaic, PEMFC, lithium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. The design of EMSs must be such that it minimizes the use of hydrogen while simultaneously ensuring that each energy source performs inside its own parameters. The recommended EMS-based-WSO was evaluated in regard to other EMSs regarding hydrogen fuel consumption and effectiveness. The considered EMSs are state machine control strategy (SMCS), classical external energy maximization strategy (EEMS), and optimized EEMS-based particle swarm optimization (PSO). Thanks to the proposed EEMS-based WSO, hydrogen utilization has been reduced by 34.17%, 29.47%, and 2.1%, respectively, compared with SMCS, EEMS, and PSO. In addition, the efficiency increased by 6.05%, 9.5%, and 0.33%, respectively, compared with SMCS, EEMS, and PSO.

Abstract:Renewable energy (RE) systems play a key role in producing electricity worldwide. The integration of RE systems is carried out in a distributed aspect via an autonomous hybrid microgrid (A-HMG) system. The A-HMG concept provides a series of technological solutions that must be managed optimally. As a solution, this paper focuses on the application of a recent nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm named a multimodal delayed particle swarm optimization (MDPSO). The proposed algorithm is applied to an A-HMG to find the minimum levelized cost of energy (LCOE), the lowest loss of power supply probability (LPSP), and the maximum renewable factor (REF). Firstly, a smart energy management scheme (SEMS) is proposed to coordinate the power flow among the various system components that formed the A-HMG. Then, the MDPSO is integrated with the SEMS to perform the optimal sizing for the A-HMG of a fishing village that is located in the coastal city of Essaouira, Morocco. The proposed A-HMG comprises photovoltaic panels (PV), wind turbines (WTs), battery storage systems, and diesel generators (DGs). The results of the optimization in this location show that A-HMG system can be applied for this location with a high renewable factor that is equal to 90%. Moreover, the solution is very promising in terms of the LCOE and the LPSP indexes that are equal to 0.17$/kWh and 0.12%, respectively. Therefore, using renewable energy can be considered as a good alternative to enhance energy access in remote areas as the fishing village in the city of Essaouira, Morocco. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is applied to highlight the impact of varying each energy source in terms of the LCOE index.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel model of an energy management system (EMS) for a microgrid (MG) under uncertain conditions is proposed. The MG consists of renewable photovoltaic and wind sources along with electric vehicle parking lots. Hence, the model incorporates the uncertainties of renewable DGs, parking lots, and also load. In this study, the MG operation cost and voltage stability index are considered objective functions. A novel combined algorithm (hMOPSO-HS) is proposed for microgrid energy management. The hMOPSO-HS algorithm is a combination of the mutant multiobjective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm and the harmony search (HS) algorithm. The simulations are performed in two parts, with and without considering the uncertainty. The comparative analysis involves evaluating the optimization outcomes achieved by the hMOPSO-HS algorithm in contrast to various other metaheuristic algorithms for multiobjective optimization. The simulation findings validate the superior efficacy of the hMOPSO-HS algorithm compared to other approaches. Also, the simulation results showed that in the conditions of uncertainty, the operating cost is 6.1% higher and the microgrid stability index is 6.8% lower. Also, considering the uncertainty has caused the penalty for energy not supplied (ENS) and demand response program (DRP) costs to increase by 3% and 4%, respectively.

Abstract:Two modern methods of the energy management system (EMS) based on a modified cost function are addressed in this paper. Fuzzy logic (FL) and Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) is implemented to achieve the optimal performance of seawater desalination plants (SWDP) within the minimum feed-in tariff (FiT). The technical difficulties involved in the variation of energy price from one time to another and the system parameters uncertainties. For example, the price of energy is higher at the peak time and the price is lower at normal times. Also, the peak time can change from one day to another day. The proposed management system can deal with these variations and uncertainty cases. The suggested EMS is achieved through a bidirectional electrical energy interchange approach ( -EEIA). The main concept behind the proposed -EEIA is how and when to inject the excess generated energy of renewable energy into the utility grid or charge the battery depending on the minimum dynamic cost criterion and vice versa. To accomplish this study a 700 m 3 /day SWDP located in Egypt fed on solar energy and a utility network has been constructed and analyzed. The system includes SWDP fed from a photovoltaic (PV) array as well as the utility grid in addition to a battery energy storage system (BESS). The main objective of this study is the management and coordination between the energy exchange process from the solar energy, the utility network, and BESS to provide sufficient electrical energy for SWDP within the minimum FiT. The system is constructed and validated using the MATLAB/SIMULINKTM software package. The proposed FL and HHO-based EMSs are investigated in the presence of the system uncertainties such as the change in the energy (excess or shortage) as well as the change in the energy price in the utility- network (high or low) with (normal or peak) time. The attained results demonstrate that the proposed FL and HHO-based EMSs provide high dynamic performance and accurate coordination between various energy resources and BESS. The results show that FL-based EMS achieves a profit of 10.28 $ in the same period.

Abstract:The energy management (EM) solution of the microgrids (MGs) is a crucial task to attain most economic, reliable and sustainable operation state of the MGs. This paper aims to solve the optimal scheduling and stochastic EM problem of a smart MG without and with demand side response (DSR) including MT, FC, PV, WT, and a battery storage system (BSS). A study case in Wenzhou city of China is conducted to reduce the operation cost and maximize the utilization of renewable energy. The system uncertainties like loading, temperature, solar irradiance and wind speed are considered which were obtained from real meteorological data. The normal, lognormal, Weibull PDFs as well as Monte-Carlo and RBS methods are used for uncertainty modelling. A modified artificial rabbit optimization (MARO) is proposed for EM solution based on three strategies including fitness-distance balance, exploitation mechanism of PDO and quasi-opposite-based learning (QOBL) to boost exploration and exploitation phases of traditional ARO. The statistical and non-parametric tests are applied via benchmark functions to validate the performance of MARO. As per the obtained results, the MARO is superior for EM solution compared to other techniques and the operation cost is reduced from 252.0721€ct/day to 184.8435€ct/day with saving of 26.86 % considerably with application of DSR.

Abstract:Renewable energy systems, particularly in countries with limited fossil fuel resources, are promising and environmentally sustainable sources of electricity generation. Wind, solar Photovoltaic (PV), and biomass gasifier-based systems have gotten much attention recently for providing electricity to energy-deficient areas. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, a completely renewable system is unreliable and may cause operation problems. Energy storage systems and volatile generation sources are the best way to combat the problem. This paper proposes a hybrid grid-connected wind-solar PV generation Microgrid (MG) with biomass and energy storage devices to meet the entire value of load demand for the adopted buildings in an intended region and ensure economic dispatch as well as make a trade in the electricity field by supplying/receiving energy to/from the utility grid. The control operation plan uses battery storage units to compensate energy gap if the priority resources (wind turbine and solar PV) are incapable of meeting demand. Additionally, the biomass gasifier is used as a fallback option if the batteries fail to perform their duty. At any time, any excess of energy can be utilized to charge the batteries and sell the rest to the utility. Additionally, if the adopted resources are insufficient to meet the demand, the required energy is acquired from the utility. A Hybrid Grey Wolf with Cuckoo Search Optimization (GWCSO) algorithm is adopted for achieving optimal sizing of the proposed grid-connected MG. To assess the proposed technique's robustness, the results are compared to those obtained using the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm. The GWCSO method yielded a lower total number of component units, annual cost, total Net Present Cost (NPC), and Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) than the GWO algorithm, whereas the GWCSO algorithm has the lowest deviation, indicating that it is more accurate and robust than the GWO algorithm.

Abstract:Optimization algorithms are essential tools used to address real-world problems through minimization or maximization processes. In the context of photovoltaic (PV) systems, various optimization algorithms have been employed to extract solar cell parameters using minimization techniques, and to identify the maximum power point (MPP) using maximization approaches. However, under partial shading conditions or during rapidly changing irradiance, many of these algorithms tend to get trapped in local minima, failing to locate the global maximum power point (GMPPT). This shortcoming leads to significant energy losses from PV cells. Similarly, the extraction of solar cell parameters is often compromised by the random search behavior and inadequate exploration and exploitation capabilities of many existing algorithms. The Jellyfish Search Optimization (JSO) algorithm is a recent, parameter-free method developed to tackle a wide range of optimization problems. Despite its innovative design, JSO is prone to premature convergence and exhibits a longer convergence time. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a modified version of the JSO algorithm, which integrates the state-of-the-art features of JSO with the Lévy flight characteristic from the cuckoo search algorithm. This combination aims to achieve a better balance between exploration and exploitation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed Improved Jellyfish Search Optimization (IJSO) algorithm in PV systems, extensive experiments were conducted. These experiments included benchmarking with complex test functions, extracting cell parameters using various solar cell models, and maximizing energy output from PV systems under different environmental conditions. The results demonstrate that the proposed IJSO algorithm effectively enhances parameter extraction and global maximum power point tracking, making it a promising solution for optimizing energy extraction from PV cells in dynamic conditions.

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-layer, multi-objective (MLMO) optimization model for techno-economic-environmental energy management in cooperative multi-Microgrids (MMGs) that incorporates a Demand Response Program (DRP). The proposed MLMO approach simultaneously optimizes operating costs, MMG operator benefits, environmental emissions, and MMG dependency. This paper proposed a new hybrid ε-lexicography–weighted-sum that eliminates the need to normalize or scalarize objectives. The first layer of the model schedules MMG resources with DRP to minimize operating costs (local generation and power transactions with the utility grid) and maximize MMG profit. The second layer achieves the environmental operation of the MMG, while the third layer maximizes MMG reliability. This paper also proposed a new application of a recently developed enhanced equilibrium optimizer (EEO) for solving the three-layer EM problem. In addition, the uncertainties of solar power generation, wind power generation, load demand, and energy prices are considered based on the probabilistic 2m + 1 Point estimation method (PEM) approach. Three case studies are presented to verify the proposed MLMO approach on an MMG test system. In Case I, a deterministic EM is solved to simulate the MMG as a single layer to minimize costs and maximize benefits through DRP, while Case II solves the MLMO optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed MLMO technique reduces environmental emissions by 2.45% and 3.5% in its optimization layer and at the final layer, respectively. The independence index is also enhanced by 2.49% and 4.8% in its layer only and as a total increase, respectively. Abstract:In this study, the stochastic energy management, and scheduling of a renewable microgrid involving energy sources and dynamic storage is performed considering energy resource and demand uncertainties and demand response (DR) using the two-point estimation method (2 m + 1 PEM). The three-dimensional objective function is defined as maximizing the renewable hosting capacity and minimizing the operation cost, and emission cost minimization. The decision variables include installation location and size of the renewable resources and mobile energy storage system (MESS), determined using a multi-objective enhanced grey wolf optimizer (MOEGWO) improved based on the logistic chaotic mapping integrated with fuzzy decision-making approach. The simulations are implemented for several cases of employing MESS, DR, and uncertainties to investigate the proposed approach's efficacy. The MOEGWO performance is confirmed to solve the ZDT and CEC'09 functions according to some well-known algorithms. Then, the performance of the MOEGWO is evaluated on the stochastic energy management and scheduling of the renewable microgrid. The results indicate that considering the dynamic MESS causes reducing the operation and emission costs by 23.34% and 34.78%, respectively, and increasing the renewable hosting capacity by 7.62% in contrast to using the static MESS. Also, the stochastic problem-solving considering uncertainties showed that operation and emission costs are raised, the renewable hosting capacity is decreased, and the uncertainty impact is reduced in the condition of DR application. So, the results validated the proposed methodology's effectiveness for minimizing the operation and emission costs and maximizing the renewable hosting capacity. Moreover, the superior capability of the MOEGWO is confirmed in comparison with the multi-objective particle swarm optimization to obtain lower operation and emission costs and higher renewable hosting capacity.

Abstract:The slow dynamics response of a PEMFC to high-level load variation must be solved. Consequently, it is necessary to integrate the DC microgrid with battery storage banks and ultracapacitors. To guarantee the DC microgrid components: PV array, PEMFC, battery bank, and supercapacitor work effectively; energy management strategies (EMSs) are essential. The EMS distributes the load with the PV array, PEMFC, lithium-ion battery, and supercapacitor considering high efficiency and low H 2 consumption. An effective EMS using a recent Beluga Whale Optimization (BWO) was developed for sharing the load between the components of the DC microgrid. Sliding mode control (SMCS), classical equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) and other optimization algorithms such as White Shark Optimizer (WSO), Manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO), Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO), soon eagle search (BES) and Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (AHA) were considered for comparison with the suggested BWO. The results approved the superiority of the suggested ECMS-based BWO; the hydrogen consumption was reduced by 37.67 %, 46.4 %, 25.5 %, 32.58 %, 12.94 %, 12.1 %, and 9.67 % compared to SMCS, ECMS, WSO, MRFO, HHO, BES, and AHA, respectively. In addition, efficiency increased by 4.4 %, 13.49 %, 5.24 %, 10.51 %, 0.95 %, 4.52 %, and 0.32 % compared to SMCS, ECMS, WSO, MRFO, HHO, BES, and AHA, respectively.

Abstract:The growing presence of EVs in regional microgrids introduces increased variability and uncertainty in the areas’ load profiles. This paper presents a novel approach for optimizing energy and reserve minimization in a sustainable integrated microgrid with electric vehicles (EVs) by the use of the dynamic and adjustable Manta Ray Foraging (DAMRF) algorithm. The DAMRF algorithm harnesses the inherent flexibility of EVs as controllable loads and develops a comprehensive dispatch model for a large-scale EV response. The model takes into account the management, operational, and environmental costs associated with load fluctuations in the microgrid. Simulation evaluations conducted based on a practical microgrid environment validate the effectiveness of our wind–solar energy storage and management strategy. The results showcase significant improvements in energy and reserve minimization, highlighting the potential advantages of integrating EVs into sustainable microgrid systems. In addition, the DAMRF algorithm achieves lower environmental pollution control costs (USD 8000) compared to the costs associated with the Genetic Algorithm (GA) (USD 8654.639) and PSO (USD 8579.546), emphasizing its ability to effectively control and minimize environmental pollution. In addition, the DAMRF algorithm offers a more cost-effective solution for managing the power grid, and the shorter solution running time of the DAMRF is almost the same as PSO’s quicker decision-making and response times, enhancing the overall responsiveness and adaptability of the power grid management system.

Abstract:This article proposes an approach to optimize energy management (EM) in a microgrid (MG) with a battery storage system (BSS) and distributed generation. The primary objective is to address the challenge of cost-effective and environmental-friendly operation of the microgrid, with a specific focus on minimizing operational cost and emission through optimal BSS utilization in the daily schedule. Balancing economic and environmental factors through optimization poses a complex problem, which is addressed here by applying the slime mould algorithm (SMA) along with the weighted sum and fuzzy decision-making method. Three scenarios are considered to demonstrate the MG's EM. In Scenario A, SMA outperforms differential evolution (DE), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), and grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) by reducing operational cost by 17.59 %, 8.19 %, and 9.84 %, respectively, and achieves better emission reduction with reductions of 4.93 %, 15.74 %, and 9.91 % compared to DE, SCA, and GOA, respectively. SMA also dominates DE, SCA, and GOA in other scenarios, producing superior Pareto-optimal solutions. Additionally, comparing the Pareto-optimal results achieved with SMA, Scenario C outperforms Scenarios A and B by achieving reductions of 25.47 % and 35.20 % in operational cost, respectively, along with a corresponding 6.4 % and 36.26 % decrease in emission, highlighting the superior performance of Scenario C.

Abstract:The benefits of more comprehensive energy use and promotion of renewable energy (RE) consumption enable large-scale microgrid deployment. However, the uncertainty of renewable energy sources and the diversity of load types pose a threat to the microgrid's stability. Recently, energy scheduling optimization for microgrids (MGs) has been primarily based on ideal models, but incorporating as many real-world characteristics as feasible can improve the reliability of the optimization outcome. This paper provides a multi-stage methodology for solving the energy management optimization (EMO) problem of MG under uncertainty considering carbon trading market and demand side response (DSR). To begin, scenario analysis method was used to address the uncertainty associated with RE in MG, and four typical scenarios of renewable energy were generated. Then, the flexible configuration and operational constraints of each power source in MG are dealt with under the premise of considering the carbon trading market. The third stage involved merging the characteristics of various load types and analyzing the response impacts of different percentage residential and industrial loads, respectively, using the price-based and load-transfer-based DSR approaches. Finally, quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm was used to obtain the optimal solution. The acquired results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed multi-stage energy optimization framework, and support the following two conclusions: 1) The carbon trading market policy contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption. 2) A high load participation rate in DSR can increase MG operation economics by up to 27.48% compared to not considering DSR.

Abstract:Unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources puts power system operators in different conditions in terms of maintaining the system reliability. Microgrids (MGs) can provide an effective solution for the problems of grid-connected renewable energy sources due to their tuning capability and flexibility. In this study, a stochastic optimization strategy was proposed for participating in energy market operations considering demand response (DR). The results indicated the operating cost decreased when the MG implemented DR programs. Also, DR program could shift energy consumption from on- to off-peak hours and flatten the load curve. Therefore, a scheduling model was presented for the operation of energy carriers and reserves considering security constraints of power and natural gas grids in interconnected hubs as well as responsive load participation using the developed water wave optimization (WWO) algorithm. The objective function of this model aimed to minimize the operating cost of sources to supply electrical and thermal loads applied to the proposed MG. WWO is a meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the behavior of water waves. The waves formed on the sea surface have complex, but interesting, relationships that can be used to solve optimization problems. In this algorithm, each problem solution is encoded as a water wave and undergoes changes in the problem search space based on three behaviors of propagation, refraction, and decay of water waves or problem solutions. The simplicity of the structure of this method, elitism and the ability to escape from local points due to the existence of different search operators and the mutation of generations have led to the use of this method. The results indicated a decline in operating costs through electrical and thermal responsive load participation and thermal energy storage system. Results of the proposed model revealed a correlation between the electricity price and natural gas consumption, indicating multi-carrier energy grids should be examined and optimized simultaneously.
