Abstract:It is widely acknowledged that good object clustering is critical to the performance of object-oriented databases. However, object clustering always involves some kind of overhead for the system. The aim of this paper is to propose a modelling methodology in order to evaluate the performances of different clustering policies. This methodology has been used to compare the performances of three clustering algorithms found in the literature (Cactis, CK and ORION) that we considered representative of the current research in the field of object clustering. The actual performance evaluation was performed using simulation. Simulation experiments we performed showed that the Cactis algorithm is better than the ORION algorithm and that the CK algorithm totally outperforms both other algorithms in terms of response time and clustering overhead.

Abstract:With the widely usage of online social networks, people come to realize the necessity of making the social network more semantic. However, the lack of definition of connections hinders the fully applications of online social networks and transform them towards more semantic way. So in this paper, we try to overcome this problem by modeling the social tie connection in online social networks with an object-oriented approach based on extended RDF vocabulary. In our method, the connections are modeled as object entity, with attributes describing their content, and operations defining the legal manipulation upon them. The connections have inheritance relationships between them and thus form an inheritance tree. We presented our consideration in designing the object-oriented model of connection; and developed a prototype to show its advantages over the traditional approach.

Abstract:Conventional data persistence technology is to store the object to relational database through object-relation mapping,but its easy-use performance and efficiency always remain problems.In this paper,we introduce a more convenient alternative with higher performance:i.e.,to store mass data to object-oriented database.However the use of object-oriented database may be not well known by quite a few programmers since it has not been commonly used at moment yet.Thus we propose an extended Java collection framework based on object-oriented database,through which the programmers can operate the object-oriented database as using common Java collection API.The performance of persistence is also enhanced compared with using common relational database.
Towards Exploratory Relationship Search: A Clustering-Based Approach

Abstract:Searching and browsing relationships between entities is an important task in many domains. RDF facilitates searching by explicitly representing a relationship as a path in a graph with meaningful labels. As the Web of RDF data grows, hundreds of relationships can be found between a pair of entities, even under a small length constraint and within a single data source. To support users with various information needs in interactively exploring a large set of relationships, existing efforts mainly group the results into faceted categories. In this paper, we practice another direction of exploratory search, namely clustering. Our approach automatically groups relationships into a dynamically generated hierarchical clustering according to their schematic patterns, which also meaningfully label these clusters to effectively guide exploration and discovery. To demonstrate it, we implement our approach in the RelClus system based on DBpedia, and conduct a preliminary user study as well as a performance testing.

Abstract:Ontologies represent data relationships as hierarchies of possibly overlapping classes. Ontologies are closely related to clustering hierarchies, and in this article we explore this relationship in depth. In particular, we examine the space of ontologies that can be generated by pairwise dissimilarity matrices. We demonstrate that classical clustering algorithms, which take dissimilarity matrices as inputs, do not incorporate all available information. In fact, only special types of dissimilarity matrices can be exactly preserved by previous clustering methods. We model ontologies as a partially ordered set (poset) over the subset relation. In this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm, that generates a partially ordered set of clusters from a dissimilarity matrix.

Abstract:System decomposition has become a research focus in software maintenance and evolution for a long time. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical decomposition method for object oriented systems based on identification of omnipresent clusters. The distinctive features of this approach are as follow: Firstly, we addressed the problem of omnipresent classes for class diagram. Secondly, we proposed a hierarchical decomposition strategy which can deal with unbalanced hierarchical organization for software system. Thirdly, we presented a revised independency metric that can offset the impact of the measured clusters' size. The experimental results show that this method can be both effective and efficient.

Abstract:Some special issues on object-oriented programs like polymorphism,the two levels of class and method,and code clone have great influence on the results of program clustering.Most of the existing work on program clustering has focused on structural programs.To explore the influences of those object-oriented mechanisms on program clustering,in this paper,we conducted a contrast experiment with an open-source software.Based on the comparative study,we propose our suggestions on the strategies of object-oriented program clustering for different objectives,e.g.software architecture recovery,feature location and refactoring.

Abstract:ABSTRACTMost existing clustering algorithms cluster highly related data objects such as Web pages and Web users separately. The interrelation among different types of data objects is either not considered, or represented by a static feature space and treated in the same ways as other attributes of the objects. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering approach for clustering multi-type interrelated data objects, ReCoM (Reinforcement Clustering of Multi-type Interrelated data objects). Under this approach, relationships among data objects are used to improve the cluster quality of interrelated data objects through an iterative reinforcement clustering process. At the same time, the link structure derived from relationships of the interrelated data objects is used to differentiate the importance of objects and the learned importance is also used in the clustering process to further improve the clustering results. Experimental results show that the proposed approach not only effectively overcomes the problem of data sparseness caused by the high dimensional relationship space but also significantly improves the clustering accuracy.

Abstract:One of the modern paradigms to develop a system is object oriented analysis and design. In this paradigm, there are several objects and each object plays some specific roles. After identifying objects, the various relationships among objects must be identified. This paper makes a literature review over relationships among objects. Mainly, the relationships are three basic types, including generalization/specialization, aggregation and association.This paper presents five taxonomies for properties of the relationships. The first taxonomy is based on temporal view. The second taxonomy is based on structure and the third one relies on behavioral. The fourth taxonomy is specified on mathematical view and fifth one related to the interface. Additionally, the properties of the relationships are evaluated in a case study and several recommendations are proposed.

Abstract:Dwarf is a highly compressed structure, which compresses the cube by eliminating the semantic redundancies while computing a data cube. Although it has high compression ratio, Dwarf is slower in querying and more difficult in updating due to its structure characteristics. We all know that the original intention of data cube is to speed up the query performance, so we propose two novel clustering methods for query optimization: the recursion clustering method which clusters the nodes in a recursive manner to speed up point queries and the hierarchical clustering method which clusters the nodes of the same dimension to speed up range queries. To facilitate the implementation, we design a partition strategy and a logical clustering mechanism. Experimental results show our methods can effectively improve the query performance on data cubes, and the recursion clustering method is suitable for both point queries and range queries.

Abstract:Cluster analysis is a fundamental research field in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD). It aims at partitioning a given dataset into some homogeneous clusters so as to reflect the natural hidden data structure. Various heuristic or statistical approaches have been developed for analyzing propositional datasets. Nevertheless, in relational clustering the existence of multi-type relationships will greatly degrade the performance of traditional clustering algorithms. This issue motivates us to find more effective algorithms to conduct the cluster analysis upon relational datasets. In this thesis we comprehensively study the idea of Representative Objects for approximating data distribution and then design a multi-phase clustering framework for analyzing relational datasets with high effectiveness and efficiency. The second task considered in this thesis is to provide some better data models for people as well as machines to browse and navigate a dataset. The hierarchical taxonomy is widely used for this purpose. Compared with manually created taxonomies, automatically derived ones are more appealing because of their low creation/maintenance cost and high scalability. Up to now, the taxonomy generation techniques are mainly used to organize document corpus. We investigate the possibility of utilizing them upon relational datasets and then propose some algorithmic improvements. Another non-trivial problem is how to assign suitable labels for the taxonomic nodes so as to credibly summarize the content of each node. Unfortunately, this field has not been investigated sufficiently to the best of our knowledge, and so we attempt to fill the gap by proposing some novel approaches. The final goal of our cluster analysis and taxonomy generation techniques is to improve the scalability of recommender systems that are developed to tackle the problem of information overload. Recent research in recommender systems integrates the exploitation of domain knowledge to improve the recommendation quality, which however reduces the scalability of the whole system at the same time. We address this issue by applying the automatically derived taxonomy to preserve the pair-wise similarities between items, and then modeling the user visits by another hierarchical structure. Experimental results show that the computational complexity of the recommendation procedure can be greatly reduced and thus the system scalability be improved.

However, this has been the way these databases and associated optimisation techniques like clustering have been evaluated up to now. This paper opens up research regarding this issue by proposing a dynamic object evaluation framework (DOEF) that accomplishes access pattern change by defining configurable styles of change. This preliminary prototype has been designed to be open and fully extensible. To illustrate the capabilities of DOEF, we used it to compare the performances of four state of the art dynamic clustering algorithms. The results show that DOEF is indeed effective at determining the adaptability of each dynamic clustering algorithm to changes in access pattern.

Abstract:We propose to use optimally ordered orthogonal neighbor-joining (O <sup>3</sup> NJ) trees as a new way to visually explore cluster structures and outliers in multi-dimensional data. Neighbor-joining (NJ) trees are widely used in biology, and their visual representation is similar to that of dendrograms. The core difference to dendrograms, however, is that NJ trees correctly encode distances between data points, resulting in trees with varying edge lengths. We optimize NJ trees for their use in visual analysis in two ways. First, we propose to use a novel leaf sorting algorithm that helps users to better interpret adjacencies and proximities within such a tree. Second, we provide a new method to visually distill the cluster tree from an ordered NJ tree. Numerical evaluation and three case studies illustrate the benefits of this approach for exploring multi-dimensional data in areas such as biology or image analysis.

Abstract:We describe a new benchmark approach which is needed for two reasons. First, today's computer systems almost exclusively use relational database management systems (DBMS), and, besides (purely) relational DB technology, only the new trend of object-relational technology is expected to obtain practical relevance. Second, today's (complex) software systems are developed in an object-oriented way. Thus, a benchmark approach is needed assessing the contributions of (object-)relational DBMS to object-oriented software development. Consequently, such a benchmark does not only have to 'measure' the efficiency of the DBMS itself but does also have to take the overhead to be spent for mapping object-oriented data structures to the DBMS interface into account. We describe how our approach achieves this goal and report on first measurement results.

In the first set of experiments, we used DOEF to compare the performances of four state of the art dynamic clustering algorithms. The results show that DOEF is effective at determining the adaptability of each dynamic clustering algorithm to changes in access pattern. They also led us to conclude that dynamic clustering algorithms can cope with moderate levels of access pattern change, but that performance rapidly degrades to be worse than no clustering when vigorous styles of access pattern change are applied. In the second set of experiments, we used DOEF to compare the performance of two different object stores: Platypus and SHORE. The use of DOEF exposed the poor swapping performance of Platypus.

Abstract:We face a need of discovering a pattern in locations of a great number of points in a high-dimensional space. Goal is to group the close points together. We are interested in a hierarchical structure, like a B-tree. B-Trees are hierarchical, balanced, and they can be constructed dynamically. B-Tree approach allows to determine the structure without any supervised learning or a priori knowlwdge. The space is Euclidean and isotropic. Unfortunately, there are no B-Tree implementations processing indices in a symmetrical and isotropical way. Some implementations are based on constructing compound asymmetrical indices from point coordinates; and the others split the nodes along the coordinate hyper-planes. We need to process tens of millions of points in a thousand-dimensional space. The application has to be scalable. Ideally, a cluster should be an ellipsoid, but it would require to store O(n2) ellipse axes. So, we are using multi-dimensional balls defined by the centers and radii. Calculation of statistical values like the mean and the average deviation, can be done in an incremental way. While adding a point to a tree, the statistical values for nodes recalculated in O(1) time. We support both, brute force O(2n) and greedy O(n2) split algorithms. Statistical and aggregated node information also allows to manipulate (to search, to delete) aggregated sets of closely located points. Hierarchical information retrieval. When searching, the user is provided with the highest appropriate nodes in the tree hierarchy, with the most important clusters emerging in the hierarchy automatically. Then, if interested, the user may navigate down the tree to more specific points. The system is implemented as a library of Java classes representing Points, Sets of points with aggregated statistical information, B-tree, and Nodes with a support of serialization and storage in a MySQL database.

Star-Structured High-Order Heterogeneous Data Co-clustering Based on Consistent Information Theory

Abstract:Heterogeneous object co-clustering has become an important research topic in data mining. In early years of this research, people mainly worked on two types of heterogeneous data (denoted by pair-wise co-clustering); while recently more and more attention was paid to multiple types of heterogeneous data (denoted by highorder co-clustering). In this paper, we studied the highorder co-clustering of objects with star-structured interrelationship, i.e., there is a central type of objects that connects the other types of objects. Actually, this case could be a very good model for many real-world applications, such as the co-clustering of Web images, their low-level visual features, and the surrounding text. We used a tripartite graph to represent the interrelationships among different objects, and proposed a consistent information theory which generates an effective algorithm to obtain the co-clusters of different types of objects. Experiments on a Web image show that our proposed algorithm is a better choice compared with previous work on heterogeneous object co-clustering.

Abstract:With the increasing amount of Linked Data on the Web, large numbers of linked entities often make it difficult for users to find the entities of interest quickly for further exploration. Clustering as a fundamental approach, has been adopted to organize entities into meaningful groups. In general, link and entity class are semantically labelled and can be used to group linked entities. However, entities are usually associated with many links and classes. To avoid information overload, we propose a novel hierarchical co-clustering approach to simultaneously group links and entity classes. In our approach, we define a measure of intra-link similarity and intra-class similarity respectively, and then incorporate them into co-clustering. Our proposed approach is implemented in a Linked Data browser called CoClus. We compare it with other three browsers by conducting a task-based user study and the experimental results show that our approach provides useful support for entity exploration. We also compare our algorithm with three baseline co-clustering algorithms and the experimental results indicate that it outperforms baselines in terms of the Clustering Index score.
