Abstract:Pretimed signalized intersection is known as a common source of congestion, especially in urban heterogeneous traffic. Furthermore, the accuracy of saturation flow rate is found to cause efficient and vital capacity estimation, in order to ensure optimal design and operation of the signal timings. Presently, the traffic also consists of diverse vehicle presence, each with its own static and dynamic characteristics. The passenger car equivalent (PCE) in an essential unit is also used to measure heterogenous traffic into the PCU (Passenger Car Unit). Based on the collection of observed data at three targets in Banda Aceh City, this study aims to redetermine the PCEs by using Bayesian linear regression, through the Random-walk Metropolis-Hastings and Gibbs sampling. The result showed that the obtained PCE values were 0.24, 1.0, and 0.80 for motorcycle (MC), passenger car (PC), and motorized rickshaw (MR), respectively. It also showed that a significant deviation was found between new and IHCM PCEs, as the source of error was partially due to the vehicle compositions. The present traffic characteristics were also substantially different from the prevailing conditions of IHCM 1997. Therefore, the proposed PCEs enhanced the accuracy of base saturation flow prediction, provided support for traffic operation design, alleviated congestion, and reduced delay within the city, which in turn improved the estimation of signalized intersection capacity.
A preliminary analysis for determining passenger car equivalent value for motorcycle during first lost time and saturation time at pretimed signalized intersections

Abstract:In Banda Aceh City, signalized intersections are a strategic approach to mitigate conflicts such as accidents and traffic congestion. This was achieved by efficiently managing the flow of vehicles passing through intersections, enhancing their overall capacity. Currently, the management of signalized intersections in Banda Aceh still adheres to the guidelines stipulated in the 1997 Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (MKJI 1997). Given the considerable variation in driver behavior and vehicle composition, particularly motorcycles, within Banda Aceh, a need for updated practices arises. Therefore, this research determined the comparison of PCEs values at the initial and saturation time based on the PKJI 2023 and the new calculations. It was conducted at four-legged intersections, namely Pocut Baren, AMD, Lhong Raya, and Jambo Tape. The primary dataset comprised intersections geometry, effective green time, traffic flow composition captured through drone recordings, and signal configurations. Statistical analysis in this research used multiple linear regression analysis to estimate the Passenger Car Unit (PCU) model parameters using video data recorded at the four-legged intersections. The result showed that PCE values for motorcycles during the initial time was 0.16, higher than the average saturation time values of 0.08.

Abstract:Traffic activity is unique and occurs throughout the region. All moving traffic movements cause a build up of vehicles when there are conflicts between vehicles and result in congestion, one of which is in the intersection area located on Jalan SM Amin, Pekanbaru. Traffic modelling can assist traffic management through accurate simulation results with field conditions based on driving behavior value VISSIM is a simulation tool used to simulate dynamic traffic flow conditions. The research has aim to modelling and calibrating driver behavior value based on traffic flow conditions at unsignalised intersections in Pekanbaru. This research uses simulation modelling with VISSIM as the modeler and GEH and MAPE as validation tools to choose which right model. Simulation process will used calibration process based on driving behavior value for the right model by trial and error method.. The result showed that simulation model based on default parameter of driving Behavior cannot represent for real traffic. Then changes in the combination of Driving Behaviour values affect the accuracy of model conditions with field conditions. The accuracy is measured using the reference volume of vehicles exiting the unsignalled intersection. Therefore, this research could be can assist in smoothing traffic flow model in Pekanbaru which more easily by using live traffic flow simulation that can be utilized for traffic intersection management scenarios.
An Analysis of the Interactions between Adjustment Factors of Saturation Flow Rates at Signalized Intersections

Abstract:An insufficient functional relationship between adjustment factors and saturation flow rate (SFR) in the U.S. Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) method increases an additional prediction bias. The error of SFR predictions can reach 8–10%. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a comprehensive adjusted method that considers the effects of interactions between factors. Based on the data from 35 through lanes in Beijing and 25 shared through and left-turn lanes in Washington, DC, the interactions between lane width and percentage of heavy vehicles and proportion of left-turning vehicles were analyzed. Two comprehensive adjustment factor models were established and tested. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of model 1 (considering the interaction between lane width and percentage of heavy vehicles) was 4.89% smaller than the MAPE of Chinese National Standard method (Standard Number is GB50647) at 13.64%. The MAPE of model 2 (considering the interaction between lane width and proportion of left-turning vehicles was 33.16% smaller than the MAPE of HCM method at 14.56%. This method could improve the accuracy of SFR prediction, provide support for traffic operation measures, alleviate the traffic congestion, and improve sustainable development of cities.

Abstract:An efficient intersection signal scheme is of vital significance to urban traffic operation. At present, multiperiod fixed-timing control is still the traffic signal control method adopted by many urban intersections. For the optimization problem of signal scheme selection at signalized intersections, we proposed three two-step prediction optimization methods that match the traffic arrival in different periods with the corresponding optimal signal scheme, aimed at reducing the total delay of vehicles at signalized intersections. The first method predicts the traffic flow in each entrance direction of the intersection by minimizing the mean square error (MSE), then obtains the total vehicle delay of each scheme in the signal scheme set through the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 delay formula, and finally substitutes it into the signal optimization model to obtain the optimal scheme combination. The second method directly predicts the total vehicle delay at intersections of all signal schemes by minimizing the MSE and then substitutes it into the signal optimization model to obtain the optimal scheme combination. The third method directly predicts the total vehicle delay at intersections of all signal schemes by minimizing both the MSE and the prediction error between every two schemes and then substitutes it into the signal optimization model to obtain the optimal scheme combination. Verification based on actual intersection shows that better optimization results can be obtained by integrating optimization objectives into the prediction process. Besides, some practical insights can be drawn through applicability analysis and sensitivity analysis. First, the proposed model is more suitable for intersections where traffic arrivals vary greatly. Second, with the increase of scheme differences within a certain range, the advantages of the proposed method become more obvious. Finally, it is necessary to balance the flexibility of traffic control with control effectiveness in practical applications.

Abstract:In order to describe capacity of intersections, and take the factors such as intersection geometric feature, traffic flow characteristic, channelized section and regulation measures into account, this research exprersses the basic phase set based on graph theory through the analysis of conflict movements. Then the common expression of capacity is gven by equations. The four-leg intersection is analyzed as an example, whose necessary and sufficient condition is derived. At last, the optimization model of intersection capacity is established. The results show that the signal parameters greatly influence the intersection capacity. Equivalent saturation degree assignment is actually intersection capacity maximal control. For common four-leg intersection, the sufficient and necessary condition for capacity is that the sum of flow ratio equals 2.

Abstract:Intelligent traffic control is influenced by Stretching-segment design, parameters optimization of traffic control have to consider saturation flow rate in approach. Many intersections with different stretching-segment design forms are selected to study on saturation flow rate at peak rush hour and ordinary time hour, the characteristic of saturation flow rate in green time is analyzed. Based on the real traffic situation, the influence of the length of stretching-segment storage to straight-cross flow rate was explored in this study. The data showed that the duration and stability of saturation flow rate were highly influenced by the length of stretching-segment storage. A probabilistic computing model was proposed, which analyzed the effect of the length of stretching-segment to the flow rate and described the impact of vehicles in the upstream. Finally, the attenuate regulation of the straight-cross flow rate in green phase is developed by the analysis of vehivle's blocking.

Abstract:This research aims to develop a simulation-based methodology in the estimation of saturation flow at signalized intersections under heterogeneous traffic conditions in India. Field surveys have been carried out particularly during peak periods at two signalized intersections, namely Vijay Char Rasta intersection situated in Ahmedabad and Rangila Park intersection situated in Surat. Videographic technique is employed to capture the data at macro- and microlevel. The videographic approach provides the queue building, moving, and queue dissipation at microlevel. The field data pertains to traffic volume, compositions, turning movements, headway, cycle time, and phasing at the approach. The survey also concentrates on noting the queue length of each approach. Apart from videographic survey, road inventory survey and spot speed surveys are also carried out in order to use this data in VISSIM 7.0 for the development of network and defining speed distributions. The present work mainly focused on the development of PCUs, dynamic saturation flows, VISSIM modeling and validation, regression modeling and validation, and sensitivity analysis. Passenger car unit for each vehicle category is calculated by two methods—headway method and optimization method. Saturation flow is estimated with the help of PCU values estimated by different methods, and these values are compared. TRL method is adopted in the estimation of saturation flow. A 5-s interval is considered in this method. Nearly, 8842 VPH is the saturation flow against to 5460 PCU of headway method and 5071 PCU of optimization method for 3 lane approach of Vijay Char Rasta intersection. Saturation flow is almost double in terms of mixed traffic. Therefore, saturation flow cannot be static in present study but is dynamic. Dynamic saturation flow values are provided for varied composition and approach widths. Base network is created in VISSIM 7.0. Model is calibrated as per Indian driving behavior for both Vijay Char Rasta and Rangila Park. Average queue length is considered for validating the model. Sensitivity analysis is carried out after validating the simulation model. It is observed that change in road width is having significant effect on saturation flow when compared to change in turning movements. Regression analysis is carried out for developing multilinear regression saturation flow model (MLR–SFM). The model is developed between saturation flow and proportion of 2W, 3W, small car, big car, and road width. 65–35 combination is observed to be best fitted combination in developing and validating the model. Similar to the observations in VISSIM modeling, it is observed that change in road width is having a significant effect on saturation flow when compared to change in traffic compositions.

Abstract:As population increases, one of the factors affecting life is traffic. Efficient traffic management has a direct positive impact on issues such as time, carbon dioxide emissions, and fuel consumption. Today, an important parameter under the heading of traffic is the signalling systems for intersections, which are operated with fixed-time, semi-actuated, fully actuated, and fully adaptive control methods. In this study, an adaptive traffic management model is developed for signalised intersections. The adaptive traffic management model developed includes phase extension with minimum and maximum time intervals dependent on density and phase skip features. Additionally, the most distinctive feature of the model is its flexible phase structure rather than a sequential phase. The Heybe intersection, located within the boundaries of Antalya province, is modelled one-to-one in the simulation of urban mobility (SUMO) simulation programme with real intersection data. The developed adaptive traffic management model is applied to the Heybe intersection, and the effects of the model are revealed. Improvements obtained from the SUMO simulation programme were verified through visual inspection, and high-accuracy results were determined. As a result of the studies, it was found that the application of the adaptive traffic management model developed at Heybe intersection, which has approximately 50,000 vehicles passing daily, resulted in a 27.2 % improvement in the average delay per vehicle parameter, a 32.4 % improvement in the average waiting time per vehicle parameter, and a 16.7 % improvement in the average speed per vehicle parameter.

Modeling Capacity at Signalized Intersections with a Left-Turn Storage Bay Considering Signal Timing Plan

Abstract:Adding lanes is a common method to increase the capacity at intersections. The additional turning lanes are often limited by the road configuration. The paper presents a probabilistic model to calculate the total capacity at signalized intersections for a full through lane and an additional left-turn lane. The proposed model has an advantage over current estimation methodologies by considering not only stochastic arrivals of vehicles but also the signal timing plan, especially signal phasing sequence. Two blockage situations under this channelization form arc taken into account. The proposed capacity model shows that the capacities of the through and left-turn movements are related to the proportion of the through traffic volume, the length of the additional turning lane, and the effective green time of both through and left-turn signal phases. It is also found that the through capacity increases with the increase of the proportion of the through traffic and the length of the additional lane, whereas the left-turn capacity declines with an increase of the proportion of the through traffic but increases with an increase of the length of the additional lane. Both capacities decrease with the increase of the green time when the g/C ratio is fixed. The proposed model is compared with design recommendations and verified using the microscopic traffic software VISSIM as well as field data. The results show that the capacities obtained by theoretical models are consistent with the simulated results, and have an advantage over the design recommendations. The capacity models can provide theoretical suggestions for the design of additional turning lanes and signal timing plans. (C) 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:Efficiency of urban road networks depends mainly on the efficiency of intersections, as they form main bottle necks of the system. For Indian conditions, Level of Service (LoS) for signalized intersection were not defined before in IRC code books. In new Indian Highway Capacity Manual (Indo-HCM)- 2018, Chapter-6 has been added as signalized intersections to address the issues arising at signalized intersections in urban area. The intent of this paper is to briefly summaries the process followed and present the results obtained by adopting the methodology described in Indo-HCM- 2018 in determining LoS based on volume to capacity ratio (v/c) at two signalized intersections in Bangalore city, India. The results have shown that new Indo-HCM- 2018 overpredicts the saturation flow rate (SFR) in six approaches and under estimates two approaches of the eight approaches of the two intersections considered. As the saturation flow is higher, the capacity has also increased, which in turn produces the higher (v/c) ratio, depicting the LOS as ‘F’ and lesser signal timing. It does not replicate the actual field conditions.
Capacity of unsignalized intersection with mixed distribution headway

Abstract:In order to describe the time-headway distribution more precisely in urban traffic network, the mixed distribution model was introduced which has been widely used in mathematical statistics, and a capacity model of unsignalized intersections was obtained based on gap acceptance theory. The new model is suitable for absolute and limited priority controlled conditions and can be regarded as a more general form which handles simple headway distributions including lognormal distribution, negative exponential distribution and shifted negative exponential distribution. Through analyses of the main influencing factors in this model, the proportion of free flowing and the standard variance of gaps between any two continuous following vehicles are high sensitivity with the capacity when major stream volume is low. Besides, the capacity is affected deeply by the mean value of following vehicle gaps when major stream value is fixed and the proportion of free flowing is small. At last, the observed minor stream capacity is obtained by the survey date in Changchun city, and the average relative error between the theoretical capacity proposed in this paper is 13.73%, meanwhile the accuracy increases by 16.68% compared with the theoretical value when major stream obeys shifted negative exponential distribution.

Abstract:An urban arterial weaving section has been considered a bottleneck in urban roadway systems, which is one of the key contributing factors to the occurrence of the capacity-drop phenomenon. This paper proposes a novel lane signal control method to regulate the weaving traffic flow at urban arterial weaving sections. With consideration of the operational characteristics of the weaving section and the imbalance of traffic at each entrance lane, a reduction coefficient of the weaving traffic was adopted. A capacity calculation model for weaving traffic under lane signal control was developed. The optimization model was established to derive the optimal lane signal control scheme. The objective function was to maximize the weaving section’s capacity, and the constraints were the safe time headway between two adjacent phases. The proposed capacity estimation model was validated using field data collected at a representative urban arterial weaving section in Chongqing City, China; it was found that the mean absolute percent error was 4.7%. Modeling results demonstrate that the actual capacity of the weaving section significantly increased after adopting the lane signal control strategy. During the morning peak period, the actual capacity was 3,265 pcph (passenger cars per hour), which improves by 28.14% under the optimal scheme of two-phase lane signal control. The weaving capacity improvement for the three-phase lane single control is found to be 3,458 pcph, which improves by 35.71% under the three-phase control strategy. This paper used capacity reduction as index to test the robust of entrance lane, facing the increasing demand for traffic.

Abstract:In many countries, traffic problem has increased time by time, it has been caused by the increasing amount of vehicle and the lacking of segment road. For the example, urban traffic problem such as traffic congestion has become a big problem for drivers. This research studied urban traffic modeling using the link transmission model (LTM). The method was proposed is mathematical modeling, including car and bus as the objects of research. The cars and buses data were collected directly by the observers at the intersection that has four links and that are connected each other. The simulation process was obtained for the each link at rush hour period. At the interval 6.30-7.30am the total time spend in the link A, B, C, and D were 45.93h, 28.58h, 37.25h, and 19.91h. At the interval 04.00-05.00pm the total time spend in the link A, B, C, and D were 27.38h, 28.58h, 37.25h, and 19.91h. Based on these results, we might to give an advice to control the duration of traffic lights that controlled traffic flow in the each link. The red traffic light duration of link A at 6.30-730am must be lower than the others so the vehicles at link A will send much better and the TTS will turn down.

Abstract:In order to improve the travel efficiency on a long arterial with massive signals, this paper proposed a mixed integer linear programming model, MaxBandLAM, to simultaneously optimize the arterial partition scheme and signal coordination schemes with the consideration of link traffic flow characteristics. The weighted sum of the two-way green bandwidths on links across the arterial was taken as its objective. The link volume to capacity rations were taken as the weights. The number of sub-zones, the allocation of signals and links, signal cycle, offset and phase sequence, the coordination speed, as well as the two-way green bandwidths of sub-zones and of links are the decision variables. A numerical test was carried out on a virtual arterial with twenty signals. The results indicate the scheme generated by the MaxBandLAM model can provide a more reasonable partition scheme and coordination schemes compared to those generated by Synchro and the models with no traffic flow characteristics of links consideration. For the scenario of dominating the main road through flows, the average delay, average stop number, and average travel speed at intersections for all-turning flows and main road through flows in the MaxBandLAM scheme, all performed well.
Modelling the saturation flow rate for continuous flow intersections based on field collected data

Abstract:The continuous flow intersection [CFI) is an unconventional intersection design which has been used in many cities all over the world. However, as an important parameter for the geometric design, signal timing, and operation evaluation, the saturation flow rate at CFI has not been carefully examined. In this paper, a saturation flow rate adjustment model for CFI intersections is established based on field data under the calculation framework of the HCM2016. Four movements related with CFI, namely the left-turn at the CFI approach, through movement at the CFI approach, left-turn at the pre-signal, and exit movement at the pre-signal, are discussed. The proposed model is validated and the relative error is less than 10%. The treatments to mitigate the negative impact on the saturation flow rate at the CFI are also recommended. The results show the saturation flow rate of the first three movements are decreased due to the CFI control. For the left-turn, through movement, and left-turn at the pre-signal, the degree of the reduction of the saturation flow rate are mainly related to the heavy vehicle ratio, the proportion of lane changing vehicles, and the length of displaced left-turn lanes, respectively.

Abstract:The conventional stage-based signal control approach with uniform phase structure has been dominantly applied at signalized intersections in China. However, this approach cannot efficiently handle mixed traffic flows with unbalanced volumes. Moreover, this signal control approach has resulted in many safety issues, such as traffic conflicts (a) between the right-turning motorized vehicles and the straight-through bicycles and (b) at the change of phases due to bicycles’ clearance failure. Hence, the objective of this paper is to propose a group-based signal optimization model that considers both safety and delay for the intersections with mixed traffic flows. In the proposed model, safety was evaluated based on the traffic conflicts during the inter-green period and was incorporated into the signal timing procedure. A probabilistic approach was developed to estimate the probability of occurrence of conflicts, with a novel safety indicator combining postencroachment time and kinetic energy for measuring conflict severity. The average delay per person, according to the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 method, was adopted in this paper. Then, the multiobjective optimization issue was formulated as a nonlinear program and solved by a Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm. A numerical study was performed to demonstrate the applicability and performance of the proposed model. Results indicated that the proposed model can provide an effective tool for researchers and practitioners to simultaneously optimize traffic safety and efficiency in signal planning. It may also overcome the disadvantages of most of the conventional models, which are incapable of quantifying safety in the optimization process.

Abstract:In modern transportation systems, more and more vehicles result in severe traffic congestion, affecting our daily life and modern logistics. Well-designed traffic infrastructures play an important role in implementing safe and efficient traffic systems. From subjective experience, roundabouts are more efficient than conventional signalized intersections because vehicles do not wait for traffic signals, decreasing which is the main reason for time-loss at signalized crossroads. This paper aims to further investigate the differences between intersections and roundabouts in the capacity of vehicle passing and other performance. Two scenarios with different traffic volumes are considered, including a large volume of traffic flow (2.44 vehicles per second) and a small volume of traffic flow (0.52 vehicles per second). In each scenario, we build six junction models including four intersections with different traffic light time and two roundabouts with different numbers of lanes. Multiple evaluation metrics (i.e., number of passing vehicles over time, mean speed of passing vehicles, mean number of halts per vehicle, mean time-loss per vehicle, and total time for all vehicles to pass) are considered to compare these models' performance. Results illustrate that roundabouts have a higher capability of vehicle passing than intersections, especially for a large traffic volume. But roundabouts bring more halts per vehicle than signalized intersections when the traffic volume is large. When the volume of traffic flow is small, there is no significant efficiency difference between intersections and roundabouts. These results tend to be applied to future traffic junction designs to improve system efficiency.

Abstract:Oversaturation of highways occurs due to their inadequate assessment and design. In this paper, we propose both a mathematical queuing model and a Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) framework based on Newell’s triangular flow-density relationship for the performance analysis of a multi-lane highway section. The proposed framework is a finite capacity queuing system, which captures an increase in the flow with the vehicle density up to the capacity of the section in an unsaturated condition and a decrease in the flow in the case of a saturated condition, depicting the actual traffic conditions on the highway section. First, the Birth–Death Process is used to build the mathematical queuing model (BDP), and the average number of vehicles (average queue length) and blocking probability on the highway section are estimated. Then, the accuracy of the mathematical queuing model is verified by the proposed DES framework. The “significance and effects” of different design factors are evaluated using the two-level full factorial design technique. The analysis of the experimental results reveals that the length of the highway section and the number of lanes are the most significant factors affecting the average queue length and blocking probability, while the jam density only has a significant effect on the average queue length and does not affect the blocking probability. In case of a two-way interaction, the combined effect of the “length-lanes” significantly affects the average queue length. In the end, a multiple-factor linear regression model is also developed for the prediction of the average number of vehicles on the highway section based on the design factors.

Abstract:An effective traffic control measure is the one that can significantly reduce delays incurred due to rising traffic congestion and improves travel time reliability. To achieve this, an accurate estimation of delay is very critical. The method of delay estimation varies with the type of data source available, and the type of data collected. This paper aims at studying various methods of delay estimation at an intersection for data types from three data sources—location-based data (videography), Wi-Fi sensor data, and GPS based probe data. The challenges associated with executing each of these methods are also discussed. Besides, a scalable and reliable data source among the three was chosen to calibrate and validate the delay equation suggested by Highway Capacity Manual 2000 (HCM 2000) to suit Indian traffic conditions. A linear regression model was fitted for the progression factor (PF) of the HCM delay equation with an R squared value of 0.85. Validation of the calibrated model yielded an average Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 12.59%. The calibrated model can be used for the estimation of delay based on historic traffic arrival patterns and signal timings.
