Abstract:A new double Schiff base, carbazole, and diaminomaleonitrile-based chemosensor for Fe3+ with high sensitivity and selectivity was designed and synthesized. Addition of only Fe3+ ions induced the fluorescence quenching of the chemosensor in DMF solution. The chemosensor formed a 1:1 complex with Fe3+ with the high binding constant of 7.98·10–6 M–1. The chemosensor displayed low detection limit (3.75·10–8 M) and fast response time (15 s) to Fe3+.

Abstract:Herein, in this report we are introducing newly synthesized chalcone derivative, "(E)-1-phenyl-3-(4-((5-(((Z)-thiophen-2-ylmethylene)amino)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)thio)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one" (5), as a chemosensor to detect Fe 2+ metal ions in HEPES buffer solution of pH 7.5. Spectroscopic techniques were used to confirm the synthesized sensor. To determine the chemical reactivity and molecular stability of the probe, a frontier molecular orbitals investigation was carried out. A molecular electrostatic potential map was investigated to know the binding site of 5 for metal ion coordination. The theoretical absorption and fluorescence emission properties were estimated and correlated with the experimental observations. The sensor showed excellent selectivity for Fe 2+ compared to all other studied metal ions. The fluorescence binding studies were carried out by adding different amounts of Fe 2+ ions for a fixed concentration of probe 5. The inclusion of Fe 2+ ions resulted in a decrease in fluorescence intensity with a bathochromic shift of emission wavelength of 5 due to the 5-Fe 2+ complexation. The binding affinity value for the probe was found to be 576.2 M −1 with the help of the Stern–Volmer plot. The Job's plot and mass spectra supported the 2:1 (5: Fe 2+ ) stoichiometry of complex formation. The detection limit and limit of quantification of 5 for Fe 2+ were calculated to be 4.79 × 10 –5 M and 14.54 × 10 –5 M. Further, in addition to this, the photophysical parameters such as fluorescence lifetime of 5 and 5-Fe 2+ complex measured to be 0.1439 and 0.1574 ns. The quantum yield of 5 and 5-Fe 2+ was found to be 0.0398 and 0.0376. All these experimental findings revealed that probe 5 has excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Fe 2+ ions.

Abstract:In this context, we used the multicomponent Chichibabin pyridine synthesis reaction to synthesize a novel di(thiophen-2-yl) substituted and pyrene-pyridine fluorescent molecular hybrid. The computational (DFT and TD-DFT) and experimental investigations were performed to understand the photophysical properties of the synthesized new structural scaffold. The synthesized ligand displays highly selective fluorescent sensing properties towards Fe 3+ ions when compared to other competitive metal ions (Al 3+ , Ba 2+ , Ca 2+ , Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Hg 2+ , Na + , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Sr 2+ , Sn 2+ and Zn 2+ ). The photophysical properties studies reveal that the synthesized hybrid molecule has a binding constant of 2.30 × 10 3 M −1 with limit of detection (LOD) of 4.56 × 10 −5 M (absorbance mode) and 5.84 × 10 –5 M (emission mode) for Fe 3+ ions. We believe that the synthesized pyrene-conjugated hybrid ligand can serve as a potential fluorescent chemosensor for the selective and specific detection of Fe 3+ ions.

Abstract:The design of fluorescence sensor for selective detection of Fe2+ is very important as it is part of different biochemical redox system related to a number of diseases. In many occasion sensors are unable to distinguish Fe2+ from Fe3+ ions. In the present work, we report simple chalcone type sensors for sensing Fe2+ ions in semi aqueous system. The receptors R1 and R2 have showed excellent sensing properties at pH 7 in CH3OH-H2O (1:1, v/v) solvent system. The fluorescence emission intensity of the complexes between hosts and Fe2+ is least affected by the other competitive metal ions leading to the formation of very tight host-guest complex. The LOD for the R1 and R2 for Fe2+ are 1.91 μM and 3.54 μM respectively, which is quite low in compared to the many other reported sensors. The practical applicability of these sensors is determined by the detection of Fe2+ in real water samples. So chalcones would be cost effective PET inhibited fluorescence sensor for Fe2+.

Abstract:New imidazole‐based chemosensors 1 and 2 were synthesized and characterized. Chemosensors 1 and 2 are highly selective towards the Fe3+ ions in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. Chemosensors 1 and 2 displayed recognition ability for Fe3+ ions in living cells via fluorescence cell imaging. Two fluorescent chemosensors, denoted as chemosensor 1 and chemosensor 2, were synthesized and subjected to comprehensive characterization using various techniques. The characterization techniques employed were Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR), proton (1H)‐ and carbon‐13 (13C)‐nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. Chemosensor 1 is composed of a 1H‐imidazole core with specific substituents, including a 4‐(2‐(4,5‐c‐2‐yl)naphthalene‐3‐yloxy)butoxy)naphthalene‐1‐yl moiety. However, chemosensor 2 features a 1H‐imidazole core with distinct substituents, such as 4‐methyl‐2‐(4,5‐diphenyl‐1H‐imidazole‐2‐yl)phenoxy)butoxy)‐5‐methylphenyl. Chemosensor 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. Both chemosensors 1 and 2 exhibit a discernible fluorescence quenching response selectively toward iron(III) ion (Fe3+) at 435 and 390 nm, respectively, in dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions, distinguishing them from other tested cations. This fluorescence quenching is attributed to the established mechanism of chelation quenched fluorescence (CHQF). The binding constants for the formation of the 1 + Fe3+ and 2 + Fe3+ complexes were determined using the modified Benesi–Hildebrand equation, yielding values of approximately 2.2 × 103 and 1.3 × 104 M−1, respectively. The calculated average fluorescence lifetimes for 1 and 1 + Fe3+ were 2.51 and 1.17 ns, respectively, while for 2 and 2 + Fe3+, the lifetimes were 1.13 and 0.63 ns, respectively. Additionally, the applicability of chemosensors 1 and 2 in detecting Fe3+ in live cells was demonstrated, with negligible observed cell toxicity.

Abstract:A novel dual-responsive colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor L based on diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative for Fe3+ detection was designed and synthesized. In presence of Fe3+, sensor L displayed strong colorimetric response as amaranth to rose pink and significant fluorescence enhancement and chromogenic change, which served as a naked-eye indicator by an obvious color change from purple to red. The binding constant for L-Fe3+ complex was found as 2.4×104 with the lower detection limit of 14.3nM. The sensing mechanism was investigated in detail by fluorescence measurements, IR and 1H NMR spectra. Sensor L for Fe3+ detection also exhibited high anti-interference performance, good reversibility, wide pH response range and instantaneous response time. Furthermore, the sensor L has been used to quantify Fe3+ ions in practical water samples with good recovery.

Abstract:Rhodamine-imidazole hydrazones ( RIH-1 & RIH-2 ) based chemosensors have been synthesized. These are characterised and evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopy, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, LCMS, absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. These chemosensors exhibit enhanced sensitivity and selectivity in detecting the biologically significant Fe 3+ metal ion through both colorimetric and fluorescence changes. The optical properties have been investigated using binary acetonitrile-water (7:3 v/v) semi-aqueous solution. The probe RIH-1 can be deployed as a fluorescent and colorimetric probe for the detection of Fe 3+ ion. It shows an absorption band at 559 nm and an intensity band at 579 nm increasing up to 50-fold with the increase in the concentration of Fe 3+ with the detection limit as low as 11nM. In the visible light, RIH - 1 helps in the detection of Fe 3+ ion through the naked eye, while the addition of Fe 3+ to the probe RIH-1 results in a colour change from colourless to pink. This is primarily due to the opening of the lactone ring in RIH-1 . Notably, RIH - 1 probe displays a high quantum yield of 0.51, after binding with Fe 3+ ions. Indeed, it has been found that sensor RIH - 1 is very effective in sensing Fe 3+ ions through both fluorescence based and visual detection methods. Additionally, DFT studies of these chemosensors have been evaluated, TGA and DSC analysis showed good thermal stability.

Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:Optical chemosensor L comprising of a new mono-N-substituted derivative of dibenzodiaza-crown ether macrocyclic ligand bearing a 2-benzimidazole ( 2Bim) side arm was synthesized, and characterized by FT-IR, elemental microanalyses, 1 H NMR, and 13 C NMR, UV-visible, fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy. The colorimetric chemosensing behavior of L toward the library metal ions was examined, wherein L represented a prompt and selective yellow-to-purple color change for Fe(III) cation in a 25μM solution with LOD as 0.23 μM in ethanol:water (9:1, v/v), even in the presence of the other library metal ions (LMI). Based on the 1 H NMR, UV-visible, and FL observations the coordination sphere of Fe(III) was shared with two 2-benzoimidazole ( 2Bim ) side arms which were also confirmed by the elemental microanalyses (in the solid state) and the Job plot method (in the solution) of the complex. Moreover, the above-mentioned color change was attributed to the presence of a strong charge transfer (LMCT) band for the Fe(III)/ L interaction in the solution. Furthermore, the viscosity measurement in the presence of Fe(III) uncovered an increase at 0.5–1.0 ratios for Fe(III)/ L , attributable to the formation of a self-assembly in the solution. A TLC paper strip was impregnated by L for selective detection of Fe(III), demonstrating a live color change for Fe(III) at 0–5 mM in the presence of LMI.

Abstract:A diaminobenzophenone Schiff base derived probe 1, was synthesized and structure elucidation was carried out by spectroscopic studies viz., FT-IR, UV-vis, 1H, and 13C NMR and mass spectrometry. The sensing phenomenon with different metal ions (Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+) was investigated by employing absorption and fluorescence titrations, which demonstrated that probe 1 exhibited selective fluorescent sensing behavior towards Fe2+ ion among various other metal ions. The porobes selceteclivity towards Fe2+ was also examined by colorimetric assay which revealed a change in the color from light yellow to brown upon addition of Fe2+ ion. A remarkable increase in the fluorescence intensity of probe 1 was observed towards Fe2+ ion, which was found to be associated with the inhibition of photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) and CN isomerization processes, respectively. The chemosensor exhibited an association constant value of 6.173 × 107 M-2 as determined by using non-linear least square fit data. Job's plot calculated the binding stoichiometry, and the sensing phenomenon of Fe2+ towards the probe was further supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and 1H NMR studies. The detection limit of probe 1 was found to be 0.0363 µM, which is below the permissible limits according to the WHO guideline (5 μM) for Fe2+ ions in the drinking water. Furthermore, the practical application of probe 1 was studied by analyzing the content of Fe2+ in different water samples.

Abstract:Two imidazole‐based color‐changing fluorescent probes 4‐(4,5‐bis(4‐chlorophenyl)‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)‐N, N‐diphenylaniline (CIN) and 4‐(4,5‐di(furan‐2‐yl)‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)‐N, N‐diphenylaniline (FIN) were synthesized and characterized. The new probes CIN and FIN exhibit excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ with relatively low detection limits and strong anti‐interference properties. Both the probes CIN and FIN complexed 1 : 1 with Fe3+ ion. Two imidazole‐based color‐changing fluorescent probes 4‐(4,5‐bis(4‐chlorophenyl)‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)‐N, N‐diphenylaniline (CIN) and 4‐(4,5‐di(furan‐2‐yl)‐1H‐imidazol‐2‐yl)‐N, N‐diphenylaniline (FIN) were synthesized and characterized. The new probes CIN and FIN exhibit excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ with relatively low detection limits (0.26 μM and 0.10 μM) and strong anti‐interference properties. Both the probes CIN and FIN complex 1 : 1 with Fe3+ ion, and the complexation constants were 1.165×105 M−1 (CIN) and 1.899×105 M−1 (FIN), respectively. Moreover, CIN and FIN could be recycled by EDTA and could effectively monitor Fe3+ ions at pH 4–10, which ensures the sensor's potential for detecting Fe3+ in actual aqueous solutions. The probes were further applied to the detection of Fe3+ in the actual reaction of Fe2+ oxidation, and the filter paper and the probe solution are combined to make an indicator to detect Fe3+ more conveniently and quickly.

An aminonaphthalene-based colorimetric and fluorescent sensor for selective recognition of Fe3+ in water

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of poly(1-aminonaphthalene) and its application as a chemosensor for detection of Fe3+ using the naked eye and a fluorimetric method. The conjugated polymer was synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization using FeCl3 as a catalyst. The response of the polymer towards various metal ions was investigated using colorimetric detection, and ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. The polymer displayed high selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ compared with other metal ions. A significant colour change from purple to yellow was observed upon addition of Fe3+ by the naked eye. The polymer also showed a high selectivity and sensitivity 'turn-off' fluorescence response towards Fe3+ ions. A good linear response was obtained for Fe3+ concentrations in the range 10-50 mg L-1 with a detection limit of 1.04 mg L-1 . The proposed chemosensor was applied for determination of Fe3+ content in water samples and satisfactory results were obtained.
Novel luminescent Schiff's base derivative with an azo moiety for ultraselective and sensitive chemosensor of Fe3+ ions

Abstract:Chemosensors with ultrasensing capabilities for detection of metal ions have received particular attention when using luminescent organic compounds. Even though hundreds of chemosensor agents have been reported for Fe3+ ion sensing, the designs of those molecules have been complicated and time consuming, in addition to having limited application for aquatic samples due to their poor hydrophilicity. Here, we synthesized a novel azo-imine derivative (L2) that showed ultrasensitive and selective sensing for Fe3+ ions. L2 exhibited ultraselective detection of Fe3+ ions with a turn-off of its emission intensity at 341 nm in H2 O:MeOH (4:1 v/v) aqueous medium. This quenching phenomenon was in good agreement with its colour change from orange-yellowish to colourless. Its capability was shown due to its very low limit of detection and limit of quantification values of 0.31 and 1.04 μM, respectively. The interference study showed that L2 is ultraselective for the detection of Fe3+ ions without a significant reduction in its sensing capability even in competitive metal mixtures. Furthermore, direct Fe3+ quantification of tap and drinking water showed that L2 gave good recovery percentages. These findings demonstrated that the Schiff's base with an azo fluorophore derivative is a potential chemosensor agent for Fe3+ ions sensing applications in aqueous media.

Abstract:A new tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based sensor M1 bearing double 2-methylpyridyl-2-methylthiophenylamino units linked with triazole moieties was reported. Both UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopic studies demonstrated that M1 was highly sensitive and selective toward Fe3+ over other metal ions in THF/H2O solution based on the aggregation-induced emission quenching mechanism. The lowest detection limit of M1 for Fe3+ is 0.7 mu M. The detailed fluorescent titration study suggested that the binding stoichiometry of the M1-Fe3+ complex was 1:2, and the structure between M1 and the Fe3+ complex was confirmed by the H-1 NMR titration. Abstract:A novel organic–inorganic hybrid nanomaterial (SBA-15-CA) was prepared by covalent immobilization of chromotropic acid onto the surface of mesoporous silica material SBA-15. Different techniques such as XRD, TEM, FT-IR, N2 adsorption–desorption and TGA analyses were employed to characterize the grafting process. The data showed that the organic moiety (0.41 mmol g−1) was successfully grafted to the SBA-15 and the primary hexagonally ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 was preserved after the grafting procedure. SBA-15-CA has been realized as a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probe towards Fe3+ and I− ions in aqueous media. SBA-15-CA exhibited a remarkable fluorescent quenching in the presence of Fe3+ ion over other competitive cations including Na+, Mg2+, Al3+, K+, Ca2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ as well as I− ion among a series of anions including F−, Cl−, Br−, CO32−, HCO3−, CN−, NO3−, NO2−, SCN−, SO42−, H2PO4−, HPO42−, and CH3COO−. A good linear response was observed between the concentration of the quenchers (Fe3+ and I− ions) and fluorescence intensity of SBA-15-CA with detection limits of 1.5 × 10−7 M for Fe3+ and 0.2 × 10−7 M for I−. Moreover, the effects of various pH values on the sensing ability of SBA-15-CA were investigated. Finally, the proposed method was successfully utilized for the determination of Fe3+ and I− ions in river water, well water and tap water samples.

Architecture of A Hybrid Mesoporous Chemosensor for Fe3+ by Covalent Coupling Bis-Schiff Base Pmba Onto the Cptes-Functionalized Sba-15

Abstract:A novel hybrid mesoporous material PMBA-SBA was designed and synthesized by immobilizing bis-schiff base N,N'-(1,4-phenylenedimethyli- dyne)bis(1,4-benzenediamine) (PMBA) within the channels of (gamma-chloropropyl)triethoxysilicane (CPTES) modified SBA-15. TEM images of the hybrid materials illustrated the reservation of the hexagonal ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 after function alization. The characteristic absorbance of the C=N stretching vibration of the Schiff base was observed in the IR spectrum of the hybrid materials, indicating the successful immobilization of PMBA in the mesoporous composite, while the XPS spectra confirmed that the linkage of the PMBA molecule within the channels of CPTES-functionalized SBA-15 is realized by forming a covalent bond between amino and chloropropyl groups. This novel mesoporous material PMBA-SBA showed a high selectivity to Fe3+ ion, which results from a dramatic fluorescence quenching by the addition of Fe3+ ion upon the suspensions of PMBA-SBA. A good linearity between the fluorescence intensity of PMBA-SBA and the concentration of Fe3+ ion is constructed, which enables this hybrid martial as a fluorescence chemosensor for detecting the Fe3+ ion with a satisfactory detection limit of 1.98 x 10(-6) M. Judged on the linear equation, the fluorescence quenching of the hybrid material by Fe3+ ion progresses by static quenching forming a nonfluorescence complex.

Abstract:A new fluorescent probe 3 was synthesized, and it exhibited high selectivity for Fe-III over other commonly coexistent metal ions in both ethanol and water. Upon the addition of Fe-III, the spirocyclic ring of 3 was opened and a significant enhancement of visible color and fluorescence in the range of 500-600 nm was observed.

Abstract:An Indane-1-one derivative 11-(1-benzyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-10,12-dihydrodiindeno[1,2-b:2',1'-e]-pyridine (BDP) has been synthesized by the reaction of Indan-1-one with 1-benzyl-1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde. FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13N-NMR and Mass spectroscopic techniques has been used to confirmed the structure of BDP. The observed photophysical changes in BDP across various solvents were associated. The impact of various interactions on photophysical parameters, including Stokes shift, dipole moment, oscillator strength, and fluorescence quantum yields, has been assessed in relation to solvent polarity. Moreover, BDP demonstrates potential as a selective fluorescent chemosensor for detecting Fe3+ ion within a range of cations in an aqueous DMSO environment. A thorough investigation into the recognition mechanism of BDP towards Fe3+ ion has been conducted using Benesi-Hildebrand and Stern-Volmer, measurements. BDP forms a 2:1 complex with the Fe3+ ion, exhibiting fluorescent quenching behaviour.

Abstract:Chemosensor based on through-bond energy transfer (TBET) mechanism with triazaborolopyridinium (TBP) fluorophore as energy donor and rhodamine fluorophore as energy acceptor was designed, and its Fe3+ ion sensing properties were investigated in aqueous media. Prominent change of solution from yellow to pink and turn-on fluorescence emission was realized by employing Fe3+ selective recognition to form a Fe3+-rhodamine conjugate giving rise to emission at 590 nm with a large Stokes shift (210 nm) under the excitation at 380 nm. This sensor was highly selective and sensitive for distinguishing Fe3+ ions from other common cations. Interestingly, the achieved chemosensor exhibits the detection limits of 32 ppb and 14 ppb for chromogenic and fluorometric analysis, respectively, which are lower than the WHO and U.S. EPA permissible levels in drinking water. The reversible behavior of the Fe3+-sensor complex with the alternate additions of hydrazine and Fe3+ could establish the potential reusability. Moreover, the sensor has also been successfully applied for imaging the presence of Fe3+ ions in living cells.
