Abstract:This research examines the possible benefit of using humor to reduce anxiety associated with performing cancer self-examination behaviors. In Study 1, 187 undergraduates read a humorous public service announcement (PSA) script promoting either breast or testicular self-exams. Results suggest that perception of humor reduced anxiety about self-exams, which, in turn, related to more positive self-exam attitudes. Simultaneously, humor perception associated with greater message processing motivation, which, in turn, associated with more supportive self-exam attitudes. Self-exam attitudes also positively associated with self-exam intentions. These results were largely replicated in Study 2. Further, self-exam intentions predicted self-exam behavior 1 week later. However, consistent with past research, the humorous and serious messages did not generate differences in subsequent self-exam behavior, though the intention-behavior relationship was stronger and significant for those exposed to the humorous versus the serious messages. In light of these findings, and given that humor has the advantage of attracting and holding attention in real message environments, the use of carefully constructed humor appeals may be a viable message strategy to promote health detection behaviors.

Abstract:Objective: To verify the effectiveness of laughter therapy on anxiety and depression in hospitalized patients. Methods: A systematic review of experimental studies and quasi-experimental studies was carried out after being registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42020138934). The search was performed in September 2022 in PubMed, Web of Science, Lilacs, Cochrane Library and Scopus. Inclusion criteria were: a) hospitalized patients who experienced anxiety or depression and who underwent at least one session of laughter therapy, b) studies with outcomes of laughter therapy on anxiety and depression. The studies were selected in two stages: by reading the titles and abstracts of the studies, and by reading the full papers that met the eligibility criteria. The risk of bias of the studies was assessed using the RoB 2 and ROBINS-I tools. The quality of the evidence synthesis was measured by GRADE. Results: 4,472 studies were found and 15 of them were included. Laughter therapy was shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and depression in both hospitalized children and adults. Ten were randomized controlled trials (nine of them were at high risk of bias) and five were quasi-experimental studies. Meta-analysis showed significant improvement in anxiety (mean difference = -10.55, 95% CI: -19.97, -1.14, p 0.03, I2 = 84%) and depression (mean difference = -2.43, 95% CI: -3.63, -1.24, p <0.0001, I2 =0%). Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, it was verified that laughter therapy seems to be more effective than standard care for reducing anxiety and depression in hospitalized patients. However, further studies with low risk of bias are required.

Abstract:Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by negatively biased perception of social cues and deficits in emotion regulation. While negatively biased perception is thought to maintain social anxiety, emotion regulation represents an ability necessary to overcome both biased perception and social anxiety. Here, we used laughter as a social threat in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study to identify cerebral mediators linking SAD with attention and interpretation biases and their modification through cognitive emotion regulation in the form of reappraisal. We found that reappraisal abolished the negative laughter interpretation bias in SAD and that this process was directly mediated through activation patterns of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) serving as a cerebral pivot between biased social perception and its normalization through reappraisal. Connectivity analyses revealed reduced prefrontal control over threat-processing sensory cortices (here: the temporal voice area) during cognitive emotion regulation in SAD. Our results indicate a central role for the left DLPFC in SAD which might represent a valuable target for future research on interventions either aiming to directly modulate cognitive emotion regulation in SAD or to evaluate its potential as physiological marker for psychotherapeutic interventions relying on emotion regulation.

Rapid Anxiety Reduction (RAR): A unified theory of humor

Abstract:Here I propose a novel theory in which humor is the feeling of Rapid Anxiety Reduction (RAR). According to RAR, humor can be expressed in a simple formula: -d(A)/dt. RAR has strong correspondences with False Alarm Theory, Benign Violation Theory, and Cognitive Debugging Theory, all of which represent either special cases or partial descriptions at alternative levels of analysis. Some evidence for RAR includes physiological similarities between hyperventilation and laughter and the fact that smiles often indicate negative affect in non-human primates (e.g. fear grimaces where teeth are exposed as a kind of inhibited threat display). In accordance with Benign Violation Theory, if humor reliably indicates both a) anxiety induction, b) anxiety reduction, and c) the time-course over which anxiety is reduced, then the intersection of these conditions productively constrains inference spaces over latent mental states with respect to the values and capacities of the persons experiencing humor. In this way, humor is a powerful cypher for understanding persons in both individual and social contexts, with far-reaching implications. Finally, if humor can be expressed in such a simple formula with clear ties to phenomenology, and yet this discovery regarding such an essential part of the human experience has remained undiscovered for this long, then this is an extremely surprising state of affairs worthy of further investigation. Towards this end, I propose an analogy can be found with consciousness studies, where in addition to the "Hard problem" of trying to explain humor, we would do well to consider a "Meta-Problem" of why humor seems so difficult to explain, and why relatively simple explanations may have eluded us for this long. The effect of laughter therapy on self-efficacy and psychological well-being in nursing students

Abstract:Background: Academic self-efficacy and psychological well-being play a crucial role in the mental health of nursing students and influence whether they decide to remain in the nursing profession. Aims: This study aimed to determine the effect of laughter therapy on self-efficacy and psychological well-being in nursing students. Methods: In this randomized controlled study, 208 nursing students were randomly assigned to an experimental (n = 102) and a control (n = 106) group. The experimental group received laughter therapy face-to-face once a week for eight weeks. No intervention was applied to the control group. In both groups, data were collected at the beginning of the study and the end of the eighth week using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire Form, the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Results: In the post-study group comparisons, there was a statistically significant difference in the scores for the total Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, the external emotion management and collegiality subscales, and the total Psychological Well-Being Scale (p > 0.05). With regard to all the scale scores, no statistically significant difference was found in the groups in the pre- and post-comparisons (p > 0.05). Conclusions: It was determined that laughter therapy increased the mean psychological well-being score in the experimental group. It was also found that after the laughter therapy, distraction and loss of interest in lectures decreased, stress and anxiety levels decreased, eating and sleeping habits were regulated, and social media use decreased. Laughter therapy can be used to increase self-efficacy and psychological well-being.
Anxiety and Cognitive Performance: A Test of Attentional Control Theory

Abstract:Attentional Control Theory (ACT) predicts that trait anxiety and situational stress interact to impair performance on tasks that involve the phonological loop and central executive, specifically the updating, inhibition and shifting functions. The theory suggests that anxious individuals recruit additional resources (e.g., effort, motivation) to prevent shortfalls in performance effectiveness (accuracy), with deficits becoming evident in processing efficiency (the relationship between accuracy and time taken to perform the task). These assumptions however, have not been systematically tested. Two series of experimental studies investigated the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performance and were premised on ACT. Series 1 included four studies (Study 1.1, Study 1.2, Study 1.3, & Study 1.4) that examined the relationship between trait anxiety (somatic and cognitive; operationalised using questionnaire scores), situational stress (somatic and cognitive; manipulated using threat of electric shock and ego threat instructions, respectively), mental effort (indexed using a self-report visual analogue scale) and performance on phonological (forward and backward word span), updating (reading span), inhibitory (Go-No-Go), and shifting (WCST) tasks. Abstract:Informal Parkinson's disease (PD) caregivers are considered to experience high levels of caregiver burden, negatively affecting the health of caregivers. However, few studies explored the relationship between anxiety in caregiver burden and cognitive function in informal PD caregivers. Although, no study has even investigated the neural mechanisms underlying this connection. This study aimed to conduct comprehensive cognitive and clinical assessments and evaluate brain activity from task-based state and resting-state using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A total of ten informal PD caregivers and 15 matched, healthy, non-caregivers were recruited. Comprehensive cognitive and clinical assessments were conducted to evaluate five cognitive domains and mental states. Neural activity induced by verbal fluency task (VFT) and brain connectivity during resting state were monitored, and their correlations with the neuropsychological and clinical tests were explored. Our results showed that compared to non-caregiver, an informal PD caregiver exhibited no difference in most cognitive domains of function but performed better in attentional function, along with higher levels of anxiety. Decreased activation over prefrontal regions during VFT and hypo-connectivity within the frontoparietal network (FPN) and between default mode network (DMN) and FPN in the resting state were confirmed in this study as a result of the negative effects of anxiety on the brain. Furthermore, Spearman's correlation found that neural activity in FPN during task-based state and resting state was negatively correlated with the severity of anxiety. These findings indicate that despite normal or even better cognitive function, informal PD caregivers have impaired brain function, and this deficit in neural activity was related to anxiety.

Abstract:Emotion in second language acquisition (SLA) has recently received greater attention because it is largely implicated in daily conversations, which may affect second or foreign language (L2) use including listening comprehension. Most research into emotion and L2 listening comprehension is focused exclusively on anxiety, with an attempt to reduce its negative effects on individuals’ listening performance. With the arrival of positive psychology in SLA, researchers began to take a holistic view of a wider range of emotions including enjoyment that language learners experience during their L2 communication. The current study explored the relationships among listening anxiety, enjoyment, listening comprehension performance, and listening metacognitive awareness among a group of 410 international students in a Canadian university. Correlational analyses showed that listening anxiety was negatively correlated with enjoyment. However, these two variables shared only 18% of their variance, indicating that listening anxiety and enjoyment are related but independent emotions. This study suggests that anxiety and enjoyment in L2 listening are not the opposite ends of the same emotional continuum, but each serves a different purpose. L2 learners should work to find intriguing and enjoyable experiences in language learning, rather than focusing merely on reducing anxiety.

Abstract:Background: Some clinical studies have indicated that neutral and happy music may relieve state anxiety. However, the brain mechanisms by which these effective interventions in music impact state anxiety remain unknown. Methods: In this study, we selected music with clinical effects for therapy, and 62 subjects were included using the evoked anxiety paradigm. After evoking anxiety with a visual stimulus, all subjects were randomly divided into three groups (listening to happy music, neutral music and a blank stimulus), and EEG signals were acquired. Results: We found that different emotional types of music might have different mechanisms in state anxiety interventions. Neutral music had the effect of alleviating state anxiety. The brain mechanisms supported that neutral music ameliorating state anxiety was associated with decreased power spectral density of the occipital lobe and increased brain functional connectivity between the occipital lobe and frontal lobe. Happy music also had the effect of alleviating state anxiety, and the brain mechanism was associated with enhanced brain functional connectivity between the occipital lobe and right temporal lobe. Conclusions: This study may be important for a deep understanding of the mechanisms associated with state anxiety music interventions and may further contribute to future clinical treatment using nonpharmaceutical interventions.

Abstract:Ability to focus attentional resources on a task is a necessary component of healthy cognitive regulation, which is necessary for normal emotional and cognitive processes, while avoiding distractions that aren't related to the task at hand. However, anxiety may impair the inhibitory and transfer functions of attention. Therefore, in order to explore the modulation of social anxiety on the effect of emotion on cognitive control, individuals with high social anxiety (HSA) and low social anxiety (LSA) completed the emotional Stroop task with the neutral stimuli presented first, followed by the social threat stimuli. The HSA participants exhibited a slower response to threats than neutral words, whereas there was no emotional effect for the LSA participants. Event-Related Potential (ERP) data revealed that N2 was more negative elicited by neutral words than threat ones in the LSA, but not significant in HSA. Time–Frequency Representation (TFR) data showed enhanced theta synchronization elicited by neutral words than threat words in the LSA only. These findings provided new electrophysiological correlates for social anxiety modulating the effect of emotion on cognitive control.

Abstract:The autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a pleasurable physiological sensation. It creates tingling sensations in the crown of the head, in response to a range audio-visual triggers such as whispering, tapping, and hand movements. This study aims at finding the effect of ASMR on mindfulness, positive negative affect and anxiety. This study will also explore the differences in these variables between the experimental and control group. The sample consists of 40 College students 20 girls and 20 boys each between the ages of 18 to 25 years, from which 10 boys and 10 girls will be asked to watch an ASMR audio and then answer questionnaires based on their experience of the audio. The tools that will used for this study are Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory developed by (Walach, Buchheld, et al., 2006), The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule developed by (Watson, Clark, and Tellegen., 1988), State Trait Anxiety Inventory for adults developed by (Spielberger, Gorsuch, 1983). The other 10 boys and 10 girls are in the control group. The sampling method in this study is convenience sampling no randomization was done while allotting subjects. The statistical analysis that will be used in this study is t-test. The results of the study have showed a significant change in the Negative affect of the experimental group from pre-test to post-test. The Negative affect and anxiety for women in the experimental group have reduced from pre-test to post-test whereas, Positive affect for men in experimental group have increased. The future prospectus for ASMR is that it can be explored in terms of personality traits, depression, stress and its implication as a treatment for mental illness.

Abstract:Fifty-three highly test anxious persons and 58 lowly test anxious persons completed a modified reading span task assessing emotional working memory capacity. Participants were required to perform simple tasks with emotionally benign material (remembering lists of letters) over short intervals while simultaneously dealing with emotionally-laden intrusive thoughts and feelings (processing sentences describing dysfunctional test-related thoughts) relative to emotionally-neutral information (sentences describing emotionally-neutral facts about the world). Emotional working memory capacity (the ability to remember the letter lists in the context of test-related sentences), relative to neutral working memory capacity (the ability to remember the letter lists in the context of valence-neutral sentences), was poorer in highly test anxious persons compared with lowly test anxious persons. The finding showed a particular difficulty employing working memory in test-related contexts in highly test anxious participants. Interventions that can improve emotional working memory capacity for test anxiety were discussed.

Abstract:Introduction: With aging and growth of the population, the risk of cancer incidence and mortality is rapidly increasing. However, psychosocial treatment has been seriously neglected in many healthcare settings. Laughter therapy is a therapeutic program to improve emotional wellbeing and health which has been applied as a complementary treatment. We aim to explore effects of laughter therapy for patients with cancer on their negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, stress, pain, and fatigue. Methods: We searched the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, WANFANG data, Weipu (VIP), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and independently rated the risk of bias in every article using the Cochrane Collaboration’s Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Review Manager and STATA software were used to pool the individually included studies. Results: Seven studies were found eligible to be included in the present review. Overall, study quality was relatively high. Our findings suggest that laughter therapy might have a positive effect on improving emotional response in cancer patients. Arguably, laughter therapy, whether humor or laughter, has a positive effect on anxiety, stress, pain feeling, fatigue, and depression in cancer patients. Conclusions: Laughter therapy is a convenient, multi-modality, flexible-duration therapy to improve negative emotions in cancer patients, regardless of their gender, age, and type of cancer.

Evidence of Delayed, Recursive Benefits of Self-Affirmation on Anxiety in Socially Anxious University Students

Abstract:Introduction: Persons with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often experience social interactions as threatening and commonly avoid them or perform poorly in them (Asher et al., 2017). Self-affirmation is an intervention shown to help individuals engage effectively in situations they perceive as threatening (Sherman & Hartson, 2011). We hypothesized that self-affirmation would allow socially anxious individuals to participate in more social activities, do so more effectively, and with less stress and anxiety. Methods: Following completion of baseline measures, 75 socially anxious university students were randomly assigned to complete a self-affirming or control writing task. They subsequently completed the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups (TSST-G), and received SAD psychoeducation designed to promote social engagement over the coming month, after which they were reassessed on baseline measures of social anxiety. Results Self-affirmation demonstrated no benefit at the time of engagement in the TSST-G. However, at follow-up, self-affirmed students reported significantly less discomfort, anxiety, and distress related to a variety of social behaviors as well as more engagement in those behaviors, relative to baseline, compared with non-affirmed students. Moreover, significantly more affirmed than non-affirmed participants reported clinically significant reductions in symptoms of SAD at follow-up. Discussion These results help to broaden our conceptualization of self-affirmation and provide support for its potential utility in treatment for those with SAD.

Abstract:Classical measurements of myocardium tissue electrical impedance for characterizing the morphology of myocardium cells, as well as cell membranes integrity and intra/extra cellular spaces, are based on the frequency-sweep electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. In contrast to the frequency-sweep EIS approach, measuring with broadband signals, i.e., multisine excitations, enables to collect, simultaneously, multiple myocardium tissue impedance data in a short measuring time. However, reducing the measuring time makes the measurements to be prone to the influence of the transients introduced by noise and the dynamic time-varying properties of tissue. This paper presents a novel approach for the impedance-frequency-response estimation based on the local polynomial method (LPM). The fast LPM version presented rejects the leakage error's influence on the impedance frequency response when measuring electrical bioimpedance in a short time. The theory is supported by a set of validation measurements. Effectiveness of acute aerobic exercise in regulating emotions in individuals with test anxiety

Abstract:High levels of test anxiety can cause negative emotional interference and have adverse effects in multiple aspects. It is currently unclear whether acute aerobic exercise can effectively reduce a series of negative emotions triggered by test anxiety. This study investigates the impact of 30 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on the subjective emotional responses and frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) in individuals with high test anxiety. Forty-four college students with high test anxiety were randomly assigned to an aerobic exercise group and a control group. Each group underwent two tests, involving subjective scale measurements and resting-state EEG recordings, with a seven-day interval between tests. Results showed that after 30 min of moderate-intensity acute aerobic exercise, the intervention group had significantly reduced scores in subjective negative emotional experiences, and FAA indicators significantly increased. The study suggests that acute aerobic exercise can enhance the emotional regulation ability of college students with high test anxiety and reduce their negative emotions.

Abstract:Humor can contribute to nursing practices for relieving pain and anxiety in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) during intravenous (IV) biologic treatment. This study used a prospective, randomized controlled study design to investigate the effect of humor on pain and state anxiety in patients with RA receiving IV infusion therapy. Two sample groups were formed: the intervention group (watching a comedy movie) (n = 18) and the control group (usual care) (n = 18). Both groups received IV biologic therapy. A significant difference was found between the groups’ pain mean scores, but the effect size was small ( P < .001, η2 = 0.032). The mean visual analog scale scores decreased in both groups after the treatment; however, it decreased more in the intervention group ( P < .001, Md = 2.44) than in the control group ( P = .017, Md = 0.83). No significant difference was found between the groups’ mean state anxiety scores, and the effect size was irrelevant ( P > .05, η2 = 0.001). There was a significant decrease in the anxiety levels of both groups ( P < .001). During IV biologic infusion therapy, watching comedy movies is recommended as a nursing care intervention for reducing pain in patients with RA in cooperation with other health professionals.

Abstract:Anxiety impairs both inhibition of distraction and attentional focus. It is unclear whether these impairments are reduced or exacerbated when loading working memory with non-affective information. Cardiac vagal control has been related to top-down regulation of anxiety; therefore, vagal control may reflect load-related inhibition of distraction under anxiety. The present study examined whether: (1) the enhancing and impairing effects of load on inhibition exist together in a non-linear function, (2) there is a similar association between inhibition and concurrent vagal control under anxiety. During anxiogenic threat-of-noise, 116 subjects maintained a digit series of varying lengths (0, 2, 4, and 6 digits) while completing a visual flanker task. The task was broken into four blocks, with a baseline period preceding each. Electrocardiography was acquired throughout to quantify vagal control as high-frequency heart rate variability (HRV). There were significant quadratic relations of working memory load to flanker performance and to HRV, but no associations between HRV and performance. Results indicate that low load was associated with relatively better inhibition and increased HRV. These findings suggest that attentional performance under anxiety depends on the availability of working memory resources, which might be reflected by vagal control. These results have implications for treating anxiety disorders, in which regulation of anxiety can be optimized for attentional focus.
