Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is a critical nutrient for high sugarcane yields throughout its cultivation cycles, however, a higher amount of P becomes rapidly unavailable to plants due to its adsorption to soil colloids. Some plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs) may be able to enhance P availability to plants and produce phytohormones that contribute to crop development, quality, and yield. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate leaf concentrations of nitrogen (N) and P, yield, and technological quality of sugarcane as a function of different levels of phosphate fertilization associated with inoculation of PGPBs. The experiment was carried out at Ilha Solteira, São Paulo—Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three replications, consisting of five phosphorus rates (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the recommended P2O5 rate) and eight inoculations, involving three species of PGPBs (Azospirillum brasilense, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas fluorescens) which were applied combined or in a single application into the planting furrow of RB92579 sugarcane variety. The inoculation of B. subtilis and P. fluorescens provided a higher concentration of leaf P in sugarcane. The P2O5 rates combined with inoculation of bacteria alter technological variables and stalk yield of sugarcane. The excess and lack of phosphate fertilizer is harmful to sugarcane cultivation, regardless of the use of growth-promoting bacteria. We recommend the inoculation with A. brasilense + B. subtilis associated with 45 kg ha−1 of P2O5 aiming at greater stalk yield. This treatment also increases sugar yield, resulting in a savings of 75% of the recommended P2O5 rate, thus being a more efficient and sustainable alternative for reducing sugarcane crop production costs.

Abstract:Soil tillage operations had been carried out during the sugarcane planting to improve soil's physical quality, thus providing proper conditions for sugarcane growth. Long-term field experiments were designed to assess the implications of tillage operations during sugarcane planting on soil physical quality and the associated effects on sugarcane yields under two soil types in south-central Brazil. In 2013, two treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with four repetitions: (i) conventional tillage (CT) and ii) no-tillage (NT). Undisturbed soil samples were collected representing the row and inter-row positions to a 0.40-m depth (0-0.10, 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m) over four crop cycles (from 2014 to 2017). In the laboratory, bulk density (BD), soil resistance to penetration (SRP), macroporosity (MaP) and microporosity (MiP) were evaluated. Additionally, sugarcane yields were measured annually using an instrumented truck equipped with load cells. CT management alleviated soil compaction only in the plant cane cycle, indicating that the intensive machinery traffic performed in sugarcane harvesting nullify the effects of tillage practices. The opening of planting furrow in both tillage systems reduced soil physical limitations, thus favoring the crop development in the row position. The changes in soil physical attributes were observed mostly in the inter-row position. In clayey soil, BD increased by 24 and 16%, and the SRP by 63 and 55% in the 0-0.10 m layer from plant cane to 3rd ratoon for CT and NT, respectively. Similarly, in sandy loam soil, the SRP increased over time in the 0-0.10 m layer for CT and NT, reaching values higher than 2 MPa. Likewise, MaP decreased for values lower than 0.10 m3 m−3 after four years for both soils and tillage systems. Regardless of soil type, tillage management did not show differences in sugarcane yields over the assessed period. Our findings suggest that NT could be a feasible strategy to reduce soil mobilization and its negative implications on several ecosystem services without compromise sugarcane yield.

Abstract:Combining deep tillage (DT) with lime application at greater depths may improve sugarcane yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of conventional tillage (CT) and DT systems and liming on sugarcane productivity and soil physical attributes. The experiment was conducted in a clayey‐textured Rhodic Hapludox soil cultivated with sugarcane for two growing seasons (first and third ratoons) using a randomized block design with four treatments and four repetitions. The treatments consisted of DT without liming (DT0), DT with liming (DT2), CT without liming (CT0), and CT with liming (CT2). In addition to sugarcane stalk and sugar yields, macroporosity (MA), microporosity (MI), total soil porosity (TP), weighted average diameter (WAD), aggregate stability index (ASI), soil penetration resistance (SPR), pH, potential acidity (H+Al), total soil organic carbon (SOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), mineral‐associated organic carbon (MOC), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were analyzed. DT2 promoted the best soil conservation effect on sugarcane. In general, DT, regardless of lime application, reduced SOC and POC in soil surface layer. Nevertheless, in the long term, localized lime addition resulted in significant reductions in compaction, reaching values below 2 MPa. The soil fertility improvement provided by DT2 promoted increased sucrose concentrations and stalks yield. Considering that there was an improvement in the physical quality and fertility of soil for better plant development, the deep tillage with localized lime addition can be considered an effective alternative for sugarcane cultivation.

Abstract:The incorporation of agroindustrial wastes in the soil is an alternative practice for an adequate environmental destination, and it is a nutrient source. Purpose: This study evaluated the effects of incorporating biosolids associated with sugarcane ashes and their effect on bean crop production in a protected environment concerning nutritional chemical parameters. Methods: The experimental design was in randomised blocks in a 2x4+1 factorial scheme with four replications. The main factors consisted of two doses of ash (5 and 10 t ha-1) and four doses of biosolid (0, 2.5, 5 and 10 t ha-1) in two phenological stages, vegetative (V4) and reproductive (R7). Results: The results showed that adding both waste in the soil provided a better availability of secondary macronutrients and essential micronutrients for the bean crop but lower primary macronutrients. This way, the applied ash doses change the pH, considering its neutralising properties. Adding 10 t of SBA significantly reduced the pH compared to applying 5 t in the absence of biosolid. The soil organic matter content increased with the SBA application, mainly at the dose of 10 t ha-1 of the waste. Combining BS with the highest SBA dose ash (10 t ha -1) generally resulted in elevated P levels. About K contents, the 10 t SBA dose promoted the most significant increase in the content of this element. Conclusion: Regarding the effect of doses, considering the studied phenological stages (V4 and R7), the results were promising even at lower doses of applied waste. This result indicates a dose dependence to complement the crop's nutritional needs.

Abstract:Sugarcane production system requires intense agricultural mechanization to prepare the soil and there are enormous questions about which soil preparation should be adopted in order to improve field productivity. Thus, this work aimed to verify the energy optimization in sugarcane soil preparation for increasing productivity. The experiment was carried out with a banded experimental design, with six replications, consisting of two soil tillage systems, one system used was conventional tillage and the other, deep preparation in band. Conventional tillage was carried out with a heavy harrow and subsoiler, while deep preparation was performed in band with "penta" equipment. In both soil tillage systems, the planting was carried out mechanically. Variables were measured: hourly fuel consumption (L h−1), area fuel consumption (L ha−1), operational yield (h ha−1), biometric parameters and crop productivity. The highest hourly fuel consumption occurred in conventional tillage. The different soil tillage systems did not influence mechanized planting. The highest productivity was obtained in the deep band preparation.

Abstract:Composted sewage sludge (CSS) contains large amounts of organic matter and nutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer to improve growth, yield, and quality of sugarcane. However, there is a lack of information regarding the impact of CSS application on sugarcane seedling performance in nursery environments. A field study was conducted using a randomized complete block design to evaluate the development, nutritional status, productivity, and technological quality of sugarcane seedlings after CSS application with or without mineral fertilizer. Morphological variables (stem height, diameter, and number, as well as leaf area), technological attributes (total recoverable sugar: ATR; quantity of sucrose in sugarcane juice: Pol; Brix: percentage (weight/weight) of soluble solids contained in juice; TAH: tons of sugar per hectare), nutritional status, and sugarcane productivity were evaluated. Treatments did not influence morphological and technological variables except for TAH but did positively alter nutritional status and seedling productivity. The application rates of 5.0 and 7.5 Mg ha−1 of CSS with or without mineral fertilizers (MF) provided the greatest increase in crop productivity. Our results indicate that CSS can be a sustainable nutritional management option in sugarcane seedling nurseries, resulting in greater crop productivity at lower mineral fertilization rates.
Residual recovery and yield performance of nitrogen fertilizer applied at sugarcane planting

Abstract:The low effectiveness of nitrogen fertilizer (N) is a substantial concern that threatens global sugarcane production. The aim of the research reported in this paper was to assess the residual effect of N-fertilizer applied at sugarcane planting over four crop seasons in relation to sugarcane crop yield. Toward this end three field experiments were established in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, during February of 2005 and July of 2009, in a randomized block design with four treatments: 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha−1 of N applied as urea during sugarcane planting. Within each plot, a microplot was established to which 15N-labeled urea was applied. The application of N at planting increased plant cane yield in two of the three sites and sucrose content at the other, whereas the only residual effect was higher sucrose content in one of the following ratoons. The combined effect was an increase in sugar yield for three of the 11 crop seasons evaluated. Over the crop cycle of a plant cane and three ratoon crops, only 35 % of the applied N was recovered, split 75, 13, 7 and 5 % in the plant cane, first, second and third ratoons, respectively. These findings document the low efficiency of N recovery by sugarcane, which increases the risk that excessive N fertilization will reduce profitability and have an adverse effect on the environment.

Abstract:Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is one of the most important crops in the world. Throughout the sugarcane’s growth stages, periods of drought are common, causing detrimental effects on plant growth. Therefore, the search for strategies for minimizing the impact of drought on sugarcane development is of great interest. Plant growth-promoting bacteria hold the potential for improving tolerance to drought in agricultural systems. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate whether inoculation with Bacillus subtilis can reduce the negative effects of drought on the nutritional, physiological, and morphological characteristics of sugarcane plants. For this, sugarcane was cultivated in a greenhouse, under controlled conditions of water and temperature, with the aid of four treatments: without and with inoculation of B. subtilis, in normal conditions of water availability, and in conditions of water restriction (2 × 2 factorial), with four replications. In treatments with inoculation, the pre-emerged seedlings were immersed in a B. subtilis solution and transplanted into experimental pots. Our results showed that inoculation with B. subtilis improved plant nutrition and chlorophyll concentrations. As a result, the gas exchange parameters (especially net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency) were also improved, even under drought conditions. In addition, stress parameters (antioxidant metabolism activity) were reduced in inoculated plants. The sum of these beneficial effects resulted in increased root growth, tillering, stalk weight, and higher sucrose concentration in the stalks.

Abstract:The optimization and sustainability of farming systems are essential. The use of biotechnologies, such as the increase in the density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) propagules, can be an important technique to maximize the effects of fertilizers and benefit the plant and, consequently, increase the biomass and microbial activity in the soil. This study evaluated the effect of inoculation of native AMF on soil biochemical quality and the yield of different sugarcane (Saccharum species hybrids) cultivars. The experiment was conducted in the field following a randomized block experimental design in 6 × 2 factorial arrangements [sugarcane cultivars (CTC 1, CTC 7, CTC 9, CTC 16, SP89-1115, and RB925345) and inoculation of AMF], in two ratoon crops. The native AMF were inoculated through application of inoculum soil in the planting furrow at the time of sowing the crop. At the end of each ratoon crop, the following traits were evaluated: microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, soil respiration, enzyme activities (β-glucosidase, urease, phosphatase, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis), mycorrhizal colonization and sugarcane yield. The increase in biomass and in microbial activities in relation to inoculation with native AMF led to increases in sugarcane yield, but the more prominent were CTC1, CTC7, and CTC9. The increase in the density of the native AMF by means of inoculation with inoculum soil favored soil biochemical quality and increased the yield of the sugarcane cultivars, regardless of the known yield potential of each cultivar, with reduction in production costs.

Abstract:AbstractThe low efficiency of nitrogen (N) use from fertilizer applied to sugarcane is a major concern worldwide threatening the sustainability of sugarcane production. Further, the significance of N losses to the environment is becoming more important as global warming becomes a more significant issue. Improving nitrogen use efficiency is a major challenge for sugarcane cropping systems worldwide. Amongst other factors, N application method has a significant effect on the efficiency with which N is used by the crop. In Brazil, the sugar industry is rapidly moving towards green cane harvesting and the maintenance of a trash blanket (GCTB) between crops in a cycle. However, there is limited information regarding the most appropriate nitrogen fertilizer placement between ratoon crops in a GCTB system. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of different nitrogen application methods on the productivity of ratoon sugarcane being grown under a green cane trash blanket (GCTB) system. The application methods tested were: (1) control (no fertilizer applied), (2) fertilizer incorporated at 0.2 m in the centre of each interrow, (3) fertilizer applied to the GCTB surface in both sides of the row, and (4) fertilizer incorporated at 0.08 m depth in both sides of the row. The incorporation of the fertilizer at 0.08 m depth on both sides of the row resulted in the best agronomic performance, producing approximately 13 and 12 % more cane tonnage and sugar yield, respectively, when compared to band surface application, which was the second best method.

Abstract:ABSTRACT New strategies for sugarcane production have been very important since the incorporation of ethanol in the Brazilian energy mix in the early 1970s. Prior to planting sugarcane, the soil is prepared, and this process can affect root development and, consequently, sugarcane production. This study was conducted in an area of sugarcane crop renewal in the Cerrado biome (Brazilian tropical savanna), with the objective of identifying which tillage system generates the better root development and improved yield in sugarcane. The treatments were: 1) weed desiccation + moldboard plowing (0.4 m) + mild spike tooth harrowing (0.15 m); 2) subsoiler (0.3 m) + mild spike tooth harrowing (0.15 m); 3) weed desiccation + no-tillage (furrow opening and fertilizer); 4) weed desiccation + subsoiler (0.4 m); 5) ratoon destruction + subsoiler (0.4 m); 6) ratoon destruction + spike tooth harrowing (0.2 m) + moldboard plowing (0.4 m) + mild spike tooth harrowing (0.15 m). Characteristics of the sugarcane root system, such as the root length density, average distance between roots, and root soil exploration, after the first harvest (1.5 years) were studied. Root length density was greater for the treatments that included plowing (0.4 m) and harrowing (0.15 m) operations. The average distance between roots was low in the no-tillage system. The highest sugarcane yield in the plant crop was achieved by management practices with more extensive soil profile disturbances, like plowing followed by harrowing.
Residual effects of alkalized sewage sludge application on soil quality and sugarcane yield

Abstract:The acidification and loss of nutrients and organic matter in tropical soils are indicators of chemical degradation. In such a scenario, alkalized sewage sludge (SS) for fertilization and reclamation of soils is a promising alternative. Here, we evaluate the impact of SS on soil fertility, sugarcane nutrition and yield in three successive crops. The treatments consisted of five rates of SS (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha −1 ) and one treatment with mineral fertilizers. The soil characteristics, plant nutrition, and sugarcane yield were assessed. The results showed that SS increased the pH and the sum of bases, reducing exchangeable aluminum and improving chemical soil conditions. SS also increased soil organic matter (SOM), but SOM decreased over time. Likewise, the N and P contents in the soil were decreased with the successive crops. Sugarcane yield increased following SS rates and reduced with each crop cycle. The yields for plant cane, first ratoon, and second ratoon were 174, 94, and 74 t ha −1 at a rate of 40 t ha −1 ; these values were 75, 19, and 61% higher, respectively, than the mineral fertilization. SS can aid the reclamation of the chemically degraded soil, contributing to sugarcane nutrition and increased yields.

Untrafficked furrowed seedbed sustains soil physical quality in sugarcane mechanized fields

Abstract:Management strategies that reduce machinery traffic such as creating seedbeds could be adopted to preserve soil health and reduce soil physical restriction to sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) growth. Field experiments on clayey and sandy loam soils were conducted along four crop seasons (2013‐2017) to investigate the changes in bulk density, soil penetration resistance, macroporosity and microporosity in the row and inter‐row positions, as well as sugarcane biomass production (root and stalk yield) under different machinery traffic treatments. The experimental areas were conducted in randomized block design with two treatments and four repetitions. The evaluated treatments were: i) regular traffic, in which all operations were performed mechanically using regular machinery traffic; and ii) without traffic, in which all field operations (except those used for sunn hemp management and for opening the sugarcane planting furrow) were performed manually without machinery traffic. No critical values of physical properties in both soil types were identified in plots without machinery traffic, indicating lowest density and soil penetration resistance values, as well as higher macroporosity, where sugarcane seedbed zones had been established. Our findings show that seedbeds resulted in higher root growth and development in the soil profile, mainly in inter‐row position. Overall, sugarcane stalk yield was similar between the treatments in both soil types. This study reinforces the importance of the planting furrow on keeping suitable soil conditions for plant growth and concludes that sugarcane production in untrafficked seedbeds is an effective strategy to sustain soil physical conditions over the crop cycle, without the need of tillage operations during the (re)planting period.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:ABSTRACT To meet the growing demand for bioenergy such as ethanol, the area cultivated with sugarcane has expanded, especially in areas currently occupied by extensive pastures with low productivity. However, land-use change (LUC) from pasture to sugarcane implies changes in soil structure and variations in organic matter (SOM) stored in the soil. This study aimed to quantify the impact of LUC on organic matter fractions – particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) – in soils with contrasting textures, and to explore the correlations between possible alterations in soil aggregation and the effects on carbon (C) stocks and SOM fractions. The study was conducted in two areas in Central-Southern Brazil, one with clayey soil and the other with sandy soil. In each area, a LUC chronosequence was evaluated: native vegetation (NV), pasture (PA), short-term sugarcane (SC1), the area analyzed during the sugarcane plant cycle; long-term sugarcane (SC2), area analyzed during the ratoon sugarcane cycle. In each use, undisturbed and disturbed samples were collected and macroaggregates and microaggregates were obtained by wet sieving and soil samples. In these samples, the physical fractionation of the SOM and the calculation of the C contained in each fraction of the SOM and C total stock of each use were performed. The conversion of NV to PA increased C stocks by more than 50 %, mainly in the MAOM fraction, and maintenance of macroaggregates (more than 80 %) in sandy site; and reduction of C stocks by more than 30 %, mainly MAOM in the clayey area. These benefits acquired from grazing on sandy area were lost with the expansion of sugarcane, a reduction of more than 20 % in macroagregation and C stocks. The sugarcane expansion into pasture with clayey site resulted in C accumulation (more than 2 Mg C ha -1 yr -1 ) and recovery of stocks on a SC2 basis. Expanding sugarcane areas into low-productivity pasture areas can be considered a sustainable strategy, especially in clayey soils, in which multiple gains occur through C sequestration and improved soil quality, as well as the reduction of CO 2 emissions through the diversification of the energy matrix with the production of ethanol.

Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems

Abstract:Knowing the influence of long-term N fertilization is a key aspect in improving the yield of most crops, including sugarcane (Saccharum spp.). We aimed to assess the effect of N-fertilizer sources and rates on sugarcane yield, biomass partitioning, juice quality, nutrient accumulation, and N efficiency in acid soils. Two field experiments were carried out in southeastern Brazil for consecutive five years. Six N-fertilizer managements [ammonium nitrate and urea at a rate of 100 kg N ha− 1 (AN100 and UR100, respectively), calcium ammonium nitrate at a rate of 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha− 1 (CAN50, CAN100, CAN150, and CAN200, respectively)] were applied to acidic soils. Nitrogen fertilization did not affect sugarcane and sugar yields at the site with previous rotation with peanut (Arachis hypogea) before crop replanting. Conversely, at the site under continuous monoculture, AN100, CAN100, and CAN150 showed increases of 7–25% in sugarcane and sugar yields, and 3–7% in Brix and recoverable total sugar content. We conclude that in responsive sites, fertilizer N additions improve crop yield and juice quality, although high N inputs in the long term (> 100 kg N ha− 1) can reduce sugarcane sustainability. Similarly, non-responsive sites can exhibit substantial economic losses and environmental pollution. Identifying responsive and non-responsive sites to fertilizer N is required for improving N use efficiency and reducing environmental risks and economic losses.

Abstract:Phosphate fertilizer placement at sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) establishment can strongly influence the distribution of soil P pools over crop cycles, and has a great influence in the availability of this nutrient to plant uptake. Our main objective was to evaluate sugarcane yield as well as changes in the distribution of soil P pools, under phosphate fertilizer sources and their management, over two years of sugarcane cultivation. The experiment was established in August 2013 with two phosphate sources (TSP (triple superphosphate) and RP (Bayovar rock phosphate)) and three application methods: as broadcast, at planting furrow and combining half broadcast/half plant furrow, all at the rate of 180 kg ha−1 soluble P2O5 being applied at crop establishment. Sugarcane yield and P uptake was evaluated, and soil was sampled after harvest in August 2015 to analyze P fractions. Substantial amounts of P derived from fertilizers were accumulated as inorganic and/or organic moderately labile P. Broadcast application of TSP was not able to enhance total P in 0–40 cm layer compared to control treatment. In general, TSP was more effective to supply P for sugarcane and keep more of this nutrient in all labile fractions in the soil. However, the potential residual effect of RP (Ca-P) is expected in the following years, slowly solubilizing over the time.

Abstract:N Fertilizer recommendations must be improved to optimize N use efficiency (NUE) for bioenergy crops. A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that sites varying in historical usage of by-product differ in soil N-supplying power and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) responsiveness to N fertilization. Our aim was to quantify soil N availability and N fertilizer rates, sources, and application timings for their effects on sugarcane yield and NUE. Three N response trials, each involving 0 to 200 kg N ha−1, were conducted in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, at sites varying historically in the usage of vinasse. Before fertilizer application and at harvest, soil inorganic N content was quantified and potential N mineralization estimated by the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test (ISNT); stalk yield and sugar content were measured at harvest and used to estimate NUE. Sugarcane showed significant response to N fertilization only at the sites with no history of vinasse usage. Reducing the N rate from 120 to 80 kg N ha−1 showed limited potential for lowering yield (~ 1 %), while increasing the NUE by 54 %, which was far better than the 14 % increase achieved by modifying the N source or application timing. Monitoring inorganic N and ISNT levels over time to estimate soil N-supplying power has potential for predicting the responsiveness of sugarcane to N fertilization; however, ISNT interpretations must consider factors that impede mineralization or crop N utilization, such as soil acidity or a limitation on the availability of Ca or P. Soil N testing can help optimize NUE for sustainable bioenergy production.

Agronomic potential of different fermented organic composts based on agro-industrial plant waste

Abstract:Organic composts such as "bokashi", obtained from the fermentation of bran mixtures and inoculated with microorganisms, improve soil characteristics. In Brazil, the most widely used formulation for the production of this compost is obtained from a mixture of wheat and castor bean bran, but both have a high monetary cost. Replacing these components with regionally available sources represents the possibility of reducing costs and making more sustainable use of this waste. The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical characteristics and determine the availability of nitrogen for the plants. The study was divided into two stages, consisting of an incubation test in the laboratory and a bioassay in the greenhouse using forage sorghum as an indicator species. In the laboratory trial, the treatments consisted of two raw material sources with a low C/N ratio (castor bean bran-CAB and cottonseed bran-COB), corresponding to 40% of the mixture; three sources with a high C/N ratio (wheat bran-WHB or rice bran-RIB), gradually replaced by passion fruit peel bran-PFPB), corresponding to 60% of the mixture. The materials were mixed, moistened, inoculated with microorganisms (Embiotic®) and kept in sealed containers with a capacity of 620 cm3 for 21 days. In the greenhouse, in addition to the aforementioned treatments, seven controls were included: no addition of organic and synthetic N sources; ammonium nitrate; CAB; COB; WHB; RIB and PFPB. In the second stage, dry mass production and N content in sorghum plant tissues were determined, and the rates of N availability were estimated. It was found that the pH of the standard compost was 4.75, and in the other formulations it ranged from 4.62 to 5.3, the highest values being observed when WHB was fully replaced by RIB There was a significant difference in the EC values, but all were well below the value considered adequate. Replacing CAB with COB and WHB with RIB and PFPB resulted in a reduction in N content and an increase in the C:N ratio. Replacing WHB with PFPB led to an increase in K content and a reduction in P and Mg content. In the bioassay, the highest biomass production was in the treatments with the fermented composts, and the highest biological recovery of N was obtained in the ammonium nitrate treatment, followed by the CAB, COB and WHB treatments.
Calcium pyruvate in the attenuation of the water deficit on the agro-industrial quality of ratoon sugarcane

Abstract:Sugarcane is one of the largest agricultural commodities when considering the export volume and the number of jobs generated. Sugarcane production in the Brazilian Northeast region is generally low due to several factors, including the irregular rainfall distribution, which highlights the importance of studies aimed at mitigating the deleterious effects of water stress. In this scenario, this study aimed to evaluate calcium pyruvate as a water deficit attenuator on the agro-industrial quality of sugarcane in the second cycle of cultivation. The experiment was conducted out under greenhouse conditions of the Federal University of Campina Grande, where five sugarcane commercial genotypes tested (G1- RB863129, G2- RB92579, G3- RB962962, G4- RB021754, and G5- RB041443) and three irrigation management strategies (E1- full irrigation, E2- water deficit with application of 30 mM of calcium pyruvate, and E3- water deficit without calcium pyruvate application), distributed in randomized blocks in 5 × 3 factorial arrangement with three replications. The RB021754 genotype under water deficit and without foliar application of calcium pyruvate increased the fiber content (13.2%) and the sugarcane moist cake weight (143.5 g). The effects of water deficit in sugarcane genotypes are attenuated by the exogenous application of 30 mM of calcium pyruvate, with benefits on the polarized sucrose content, apparent sucrose content of the juice, soluble solids content, purity, corrected cane POL, total recoverable sugars, and stem mass in relation to plants under water deficit without calcium pyruvate application.
