Formation Control of Multi-UAV Systems with Time and Angle Constraints

Abstract:This study addresses the formation control problem of multiple fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in three dimensions, taking into account assembly time and angle constraints. A novel control strategy is proposed, which divides the system into two modules. The first module, known as the assembly stage, assembles the UAV swarm and creates a fundamental formation from arbitrary initial states. Each UAV is required to reach the designated site while considering the terminal constraints regarding both time and angles. Novel sliding manifolds have been developed, and corresponding control laws are proposed to meet the constraints in the assembly stage. The Lyapunov stability theory is employed to prove that the proposed control laws guarantee a fixed-time stable system. The second module, referred to as the formation-keeping stage, is responsible for precisely maintaining the UAV swarm’s geometric pattern. The study proposes a sliding mode control (SMC) law that uses the traditional proportional navigation guidance (PNG) for followers to trace the relative trajectories of a predetermined central leader in a leader-follower structure. Finally, numerical simulation results are presented to demonstrate the successful implementation of the proposed approach. Compared to the two other methods, our proposed approach not only satisfies the constraints but also exhibits a higher level of distance accuracy. In precise terms, our method achieves a reduction in the average distance error of 73% and 87%, respectively, when compared to the previous two methods.
Connectivity Preserving Decentralized UAV Swarm Navigation in Obstacle-laden Environments without Explicit Communication

Abstract:This paper presents a novel control method for a group of UAVs in obstacle-laden environments while preserving sensing network connectivity without data transmission between the UAVs. By leveraging constraints rooted in control barrier functions (CBFs), the proposed method aims to overcome the limitations, such as oscillatory behaviors and frequent constraint violations, of the existing method based on artificial potential fields (APFs). More specifically, the proposed method first determines desired control inputs by considering CBF-based constraints rather than repulsive APFs. The desired inputs are then minimally modified by solving a numerical optimization problem with soft constraints. In addition to the optimization-based method, we present an approximate method without numerical optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is evaluated by extensive simulations to compare the performance of the CBF-based methods with an APF-based approach. Experimental results using real quadrotors are also presented.

Abstract:This paper investigates the distributed formation control of a group of leader-following spacecraft with bounded actuation and limited communication ranges. In particular, connectivity-preserving and collision-avoidance controllers are proposed for the leader with constant or time-varying velocity, respectively. The communication graph between the spacecraft is modeled via a distance-induced proximity graph. By designing a virtual proxy for each spacecraft, the spacecraft–proxy couplings address the actuator saturation constraints. The inter-proxy dynamics incorporated with a bounded artificial potential function fulfill the coordination of all proxies. In addition, the bounded potential function can simultaneously tackle connectivity preservation and collision avoidance problems. The distributed formation controllers are proposed for multiple spacecraft with constant or time-varying velocities relative to the leader. A sliding mode control approach and the proxies' dynamics are used in the design of a distributed cooperative controller for spacecraft to address the cooperative problem between the followers and the leader. Numerical simulations confirm the effectiveness of the anti-saturation distributed connectivity preservation controller.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology, their assigned missions have become significantly more intricate. Individual UAVs are no longer sufficient to meet these diverse and demanding requirements. There is now a shift towards employing multiple UAVs operating collaboratively to address complex tasks, replacing the reliance on singular units. This study focuses on the complexities of coordinated flight within UAV formations. A dynamic consensus optimal control algorithm is proposed for distributed formations, grounded in optimal control theory. Furthermore, the enhanced control method is validated via simulation on a semi-physical visualization platform, effectively closing the gap between real-world formation requirements and simulation outcomes. The results from these simulations underscore that the proposed method effectively preserves UAV formation integrity and demonstrates exceptional applicability in real-world scenarios.
Multi-UAV cooperative target tracking with bounded noise for connectivity preservation

Abstract:We investigate cooperative target tracking of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with a limited communication range. This is an integration of UAV motion control, target state estimation, and network topology control. We first present the communication topology and basic notations for network connectivity, and introduce the distributed Kalman consensus filter. Then, convergence and boundedness of the estimation errors using the filter are analyzed, and potential functions are proposed for communication link maintenance and collision avoidance. By taking stable target tracking into account, a distributed potential function based UAV motion controller is discussed. Since only the estimation of the target state rather than the state itself is available for UAV motion control and UAV motion can also affect the accuracy of state estimation, it is clear that the UAV motion control and target state estimation are coupled. Finally, the stability and convergence properties of the coupled system under bounded noise are analyzed in detail and demonstrated by simulations.

Abstract:SummaryA distributed formation control algorithm is proposed for multiple vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in this paper. The neighboring information is obtained by active measurements rather than by nonactive communications as done in the current literatures. By properly expanding the distance‐based network topology structure between each pair of UAVs, a distributed algorithm is proposed such that the switching topology remains connected along the time. Since a VTOL UAV system is typically underactuated, a hierarchical idea is introduced to derive the control design procedure. More specifically, the studied formation control problem of multiple VTOL UAVs is first transformed into the consensus problem of their corresponding error systems. Then, a command force and an applied torque are synthesized for each VTOL UAV such that the error systems reach a consensus. It is demonstrated in terms of Lyapunov theory that the proposed distributed hierarchical control algorithm guarantees the formation realization of multiple VTOL UAVs while maintaining the network connectivity. Finally, simulations are performed to validate the theoretical results.

Abstract:The research presented in this paper addresses the issue of distributed motion control for keeping certain degree of wireless connectivity among mobile units. In our approach, each mobile unit is equipped with an omnidirectional antenna that communicates at 2.4GHz (IIEEE 802.15.4). We first propose a framework for connectivity tracking and computation of relative positions. Then, based on the generated relative positions, a motion control strategy is presented aiming at maintaining a required level of connectivity among mobile units. We implemented the proposed framework on IEEE 802.15.4 based nodes and validated the idea of generating connectivity-aware relative positions. A set of simulation and experimental results are shown that illustrate the effectiveness of the motion control strategy.

Abstract:A collision-free formation control problem for multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with directed switching topologies and disturbances is investigated. A novel distributed control algorithm that uses unmanned aerial vehicles' local directed switching information is proposed for achieving the required flight formation and ensuring a safe distance between UAVs; the algorithm involves the incorporation of the artificial potential field method in the virtual leader formation scheme. Two command signals generated by the virtual position controller are transmitted to the attitude subsystem. For each UAV, an adaptive composite controller is designed by combining a fuzzy system and fast terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) technique to guarantee that tracking errors converge to a stable area around zero. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed composite control algorithm is demonstrated through a simulation.

Distributed Control of Unmanned Marine Vehicles for Target Circumnavigation in Communication-Denied Environments

Abstract:This article considers the problem of target circumnavigation using multiple unmanned marine vehicles in the communication-denied environment. The vehicles are required to circumnavigate the target maintaining a desired radius and evenly spaced positions relying solely on local relative range measurements. A novel distributed control strategy with a saturation function design is proposed for cooperatively circumnavigating both static and dynamic targets. Via the Lyapunov control theory and the input-to-state property, the closed-loop stability with only the relative range information is achieved. The steady-state circumnavigation error converges to zero and is uniformly ultimately bounded for the static and dynamic targets, respectively. In addition, a second-order sliding mode observer is developed to estimate the range rate information. The observer incorporates linear and nonlinear correction terms and is proven to be global asymptotically stable. The finite time convergence property also contributes to the control performance. Finally, numerical simulations and real experiments involving three unmanned surface vehicles are conducted. Compared with the existing approach, the proposed method shows convenience in implementations and better circumnavigation control performance especially for dynamic targets.
Multi-UAV Deployment in Obstacle-Cluttered Environments with LOS Connectivity

Abstract:A reliable communication network is essential for multiple UAVs operating within obstacle-cluttered environments, where limited communication due to obstructions often occurs. A common solution is to deploy intermediate UAVs to relay information via a multi-hop network, which introduces two challenges: (i) how to design the structure of multi-hop networks; and (ii) how to maintain connectivity during collaborative motion. To this end, this work first proposes an efficient constrained search method based on the minimum-edge RRT$^\star$ algorithm, to find a spanning-tree topology that requires a less number of UAVs for the deployment task. To achieve this deployment, a distributed model predictive control strategy is proposed for the online motion coordination. It explicitly incorporates not only the inter-UAV and UAV-obstacle distance constraints, but also the line-of-sight (LOS) connectivity constraint. These constraints are well-known to be nonlinear and often tackled by various approximations. In contrast, this work provides a theoretical guarantee that all agent trajectories are ensured to be collision-free with a team-wise LOS connectivity at all time. Numerous simulations are performed in 3D valley-like environments, while hardware experiments validate its dynamic adaptation when the deployment position changes online.

Abstract:This paper develops a new robust adaptive formation control methodology for networked multi-UAV systems to solve the cooperative payload transportation problem. This methodology offers a simple yet effective technique for object transportation relying on the formation tracking principle in the presence of bounded exogenous disturbances. Compared to existing techniques, the proposed method resorts to the σ -modification approach to resolve the parameter drift phenomenon. The ultimate boundedness of the formation tracking error dynamics is established by utilising Lyapunov theory. In addition, the proposed scheme does not involve any multi-body dynamics problem, nor does it require any reference model, disturbance filter/estimator or any prior knowledge of the disturbances. As a result, it reduces the overall complexity of the formation control scheme. The paper includes extensive simulation case studies accompanied by lab-based experimental validation results conducted on a group of nano quadcopter UAVs to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the controller. The paper also projects a potential application of the proposed scheme in cooperative payload transportation missions.

Abstract:An adaptive distributed control strategy is designed for the formation of multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) groups by using only relative measurement information. A distributed estimator is first designed to get the estimate of the consensus error. Then, an adaptive distributed controller is proposed to realize the formation tracking with the relative measurements. Based on the position and velocity information, a control barrier function (CBF) algorithm is applied to achieve the UAV formation under safe position constraints. In addition, in order to break up and reorganize multiple UAV groups, the proposed controller is designed based on the time-varying network topology. It is proved that the closed-loop system is uniformly asymptoticly stability. Simulation and experiment results indicate that the proposed strategy can achieve formation control of multiple UAVs under safety constraints based on the measurement of relative measurement information.

Abstract:This article develops a distributed adaptive fault-tolerant formation control scheme for the multiple unmanned aerial vehicles to counteract actuator faults and intermittent communication interrupt, where the issues on control input saturation and mismatched uncertainties are also addressed. The discontinuous communication protocol technique is exploited to achieve the stability of the formation system, if the conditions of dwell time and the rate of communication are satisfied. On the basis of the local information of neighboring unmanned aerial vehicles, a novel distributed adaptive mechanism is designed to estimate the bounds of actuator faults and uncertainties, where the input saturation is explicitly taken into consideration. The stability of the whole formation system under the designed fault-tolerant formation control strategy is analyzed using the Lyapunov approach. Finally, simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Combustion-based studies of the carbon-13 content of plants give only an integrated, long-term value for the isotope fractionation associated with photosynthesis. A method is described here which permits determination of this isotope fractionation in 2 to 3 hours. To accomplish this, the plant is enclosed in a glass chamber, and the quantity and isotopic content of the CO(2) remaining in the atmosphere are monitored during photosynthesis. Isotope fractionation studies by this method give results consistent with what is expected from combustion studies of C(3), C(4), and Crassulacean acid metabolism plants. This method will make possible a variety of new studies of environmental and species effects in carbon isotope fractionation.

Abstract:In this paper, an anti-disturbance control for UAVs formations in a three-dimensional environment using relative information is proposed. To accurately describe the UAV cluster motion error in a three-dimensional environment, an error estimation model based on the UAV model is established to realize the UAV state estimation based on relative information. The control law to achieve the stability of the UAV formation under bounded perturbation is also derived using the backstepping control strategy. Next, to realize that the UAV formation can achieve optimal control under performance constraints, an algorithm based on model predictive control is proposed, and an ant colony algorithm is used to accelerate the solution process. Then, the stability of the UAV formation under the action of this algorithm is investigated. Finally, the superiority and effectiveness of the algorithm compared with the traditional backstepping control method are verified through comparative simulations.

Abstract:This paper addresses a path-guided formation-containment control problem by virtue of the aperiodic communication for networked heterogeneous multi-vehicle systems suffering from actuator faults and uncertainties. At the leader layer, a novel three-dimensional (3-D) path-following formation controller endowed with spatial-temporal decoupling and path invariance advantages is presented for multiple quadrotors to accomplish a preassigned formation pattern along implicit paths. At the follower layer, in light of neighboring transmission, a containment controller is proposed that actuates several unmanned vehicles to access the convex hull generated by the leaders. Besides, by incorporating an event-triggered criterion with a state predictor, an aperiodic transmission strategy is established to alleviate the communication burden and evade unnecessary resource wastage. Subsequently, to recognize the actuator faults and uncertainties, guided by invariant manifold principle, unknown system dynamics estimators (USDEs) are elaborated on the strength of straightforward filtering operations. Finally, the stability of entire closed-loop system is proved according to Lyapunov analysis and input-to-state stability (ISS), while the effectiveness and superiority are demonstrated by simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the formation control of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), specifically unmanned aircraft, in an obstacle-laden environment. The main contribution of this paper is to integrate the formation control, trajectory tracking, and obstacle/collision avoidance into one unified optimal control framework. A nonquadratic avoidance cost is innovatively constructed via an inverse optimal control approach, which leads to an analytical, distributed, and optimal formation control law. The stability and optimality of the closed-loop system are proven. In addition, the proposed optimal control law is dependent only on the information from the local neighbors, rather than all UAVs' information. Simulation of multiple UAVs' formation flying demonstrates the effectiveness of the integrated optimal control design with desired behaviors including formation flying, trajectory tracking, and obstacle/collision avoidance.

Abstract:Formation-containment control problems for multiple multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems with directed topologies are studied, where the states of leaders form desired formation and the states of followers converge to the convex hull spanned by those of the leaders. First, formation-containment protocols are constructed based on the neighboring information of UAVs. Then, sufficient conditions for multi-UAV systems to achieve formation-containment are presented. An explicit expression to describe the relationship among the states of followers, the time-varying formation for the leaders and the formation reference is derived. It is shown that the states of followers not only converge to the convex hull formed by those of leaders but also keep certain formation specified by the convex combination of the formation for the leaders. Moreover, an approach to determine the gain matrices of the formation-containment protocol is proposed by solving an algebraic Riccati equation. Finally, a formation-containment platform with five quadrotor UAVs is introduced, and both the simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the obtained results. Note to Practitioners—This paper addresses the problem of formation-containment control for multi-UAV systems over directed topologies. In practical applications, there may exist multiple leaders and multiple followers in a multi-UAV system. Formation-containment means that the states of leaders form the desired time-varying formation and at the same time the states of the followers converge to the convex hull spanned by those of the leaders. Formation-containment control provides a unified framework for formation control and containment control, and has potential applications in the cooperative source seeking, load transportation, and surveillance. Although formation control and containment control problems have been studied a lot, the formation-containment control problem for multi-UAV system is still open and challenging. This paper proposed a distributed formation-containment protocol for the multi-UAV system using local neighboring information. Sufficient conditions for multi-UAV systems to achieve formation-containment are presented. It is proven that the states of followers not only converge to the convex hull formed by those of leaders but also keep certain formation specified by the convex combination of the formation for the leaders. An approach to design the formation-containment protocol is given. A remarkable point for this paper is that the obtained results are demonstrated by practical experiments with five quadrotor UAVs.
