Abstract:Ocean acidification poses a substantial threat to global marine ecosystems, estuaries are more vulnerable to ocean acidification compared to open oceans due to their weaker buffering capacity. This study examined the carbonate parameters off the Yangtze River estuary (YRE) during summer 2019 and investigated seasonal variations in total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) transport in the lower Yangtze River in 2019. Monthly DIC (1566-2164 mu mol/kg) and TA (1471-2128 mu mol/kg) in the Yangtze River were negatively correlated with water discharge. Buffer factor ( beta DIC ) was calculated and used to evaluate the buffering capacity, which ranged from 65 to 256 mu mol/kg and increased seaward along the YRE. Conservative mixing models indicated that the estuary had a minimum buffer zone (MBZ) at salinity of 2-9 during the high discharge periods. And the salinity of the MBZ was positively correlated with the riverine DIC:TA ratio. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam has resulted in a decrease in the Yangtze River's DIC:TA ratio, leading to the migration of the estuarine MBZ towards lower salinity regions. The effect of anthropogenic CO2 2 invasion on estuarine buffering capacity was opposite to that of dam construction, leading to the migration of the estuarine MBZ towards higher salinity regions. Biological influences on the buffering capacity in the YRE were also quite considerable. Net autotrophy slightly enhanced the buffering capacity of the estuarine surface water, while net heterotrophy significantly weakened the buffering capacity of the estuarine bottom water. Eutrophication could intensify the biological influences on the buffering capacity. Globally, mid-latitude estuaries, such as the YRE, generally exhibit the strongest buffering capacity, while estuaries in Arctic regions tend to have the weakest buffering capacity.
Inorganic Carbon Parameters Responding to Summer Hypoxia Outside the Changjiang Estuary and the Related Implications

Abstract:The eutrophication, hypoxia and coastal acidification are attracting more and more attention. In this study, inorganic carbon parameters, including dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA) and calculated partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ), obtained from a summer cruise in August, 2009, were used to investigate their integrated response to biological processes accompanying the oxygen depletion in the areas off the Changjiang Estuary. According to the observations, the typical hypoxia occurred in the bottom water just outside the Changjiang Estuary with Dissolved Oxygen (DO) lower than 2.00 mg L −1 . The biological uptake in the surface water and the decomposition of organic matter in the bottom water were fully coupled with each other. The high concentration of Chl_ a (Chl_ a = 10.9 μg L −1 ) and DO (9.25 mg L −1 ), profoundly decreased DIC concentration (1828 μmol kg −1 ) and elevated pH (8.42) was observed in the surface water. The correspondingly increased DIC and depletion of oxygen were observed in the bottom water. The semi-quantitative analysis proved that the locally-produced phytoplankton, determined by primary productivity, was deposited to the bottom and contributed about 76% of total amount of the organic carbon decomposition in the bottom. However, in the bottom hypoxia (DO = 2.05 mg L −1 ) area observed in the Southern Zhejiang coastal water, the responding patterns of inorganic carbon parameters deviated from the previous one. The expanding of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), the adding of Hangzhou Bay water (with high DIC concentration) and Coastal Current together modify the DIC background value in this area, and the local degeneration and upwelling process may also help to offset the local DIC removed by net biological uptake in surface water. In addition, when the mixing occurring in autumn, which may break the summer stratification, the excess release of high DIC in the bottom water to the subsurface water could have an important influence on coastal acidification and the CO 2 uptake capacity in this area.
Interannual-decadal Variation in Satellite-Derived Surface Chlorophyll-a Concentration in the Bohai Sea over the Past 16 Years

Abstract:Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration is an important indicator of the state of marine ecosystems. In the current study, the interannual-decadal variation in the Bohai Sea's surface Chl-a concentration and the underlying dynamics are investigated based on 16 years (August 2002-February 2019) of satellite ocean colour observations. The Chl-a concentration shows a spatially coherent increasing trend from 2003 to 2011 and a decreasing trend from 2012 to 2018 in both the Bohai and North Yellow Seas. Both decadal trends are clearer in the Bohai Sea than in the Yellow Sea and in coastal waters than in offshore waters. The decreasing trend is more obvious than the increasing trend. The low-frequency variations are mainly controlled by sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall variations and eventually related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). During positive PDO phases, warm SST anomalies exist in the Bohai and Yellow Seas and negative rainfall anomalies exist over the sea and surrounding lands. These anomalies would decrease the surface layer dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentration through suppressing the upward turbulent nutrient diffusion and reducing land-sourced nutrient fluxes into the ocean, leading to negative Chl-a concentration anomalies. During negative PDO phases, the opposite situation occurs. Human activities may make a secondary contribution through enhancing/reducing the anthropogenic nitrogen emission before/after 2011. This study emphasizes the natural climate variability in modulating low-frequency variations in surface Chl-a concentrations in the Bohai and Yellow Seas in recent decades and is useful for marine resource planning and marine ecological management in the Bohai Sea in the future.
Monthly and Interannual Variations in Winter Positive Surface‐Bottom Temperature Difference in Northeastern Coastal Waters of the Shandong Peninsula in the Yellow Sea

Abstract:Traditionally, the Yellow Sea (YS) is believed to be well mixed throughout the water column or to experience significant temperature inversions in winter. Recently, we found a significant positive surface-bottom temperature difference (SBTD) as large as 3.7 degrees C in northeastern coastal waters of the Shandong Peninsula in the YS in winter. By analyzing 4 years (June 2016-September 2020) of online in situ observations, this study examined monthly and interannual variations in winter positive SBTD and the underlying dynamics. The winter positive SBTD generally formed in November, peaked in December/January, and disappeared in March. At the interannual time scale, this SBTD was strongest in 2018 and weakest in 2020. The underlying dynamics involved the combined effects of prevailing winter monsoon winds and resultant surface heat loss and current heat advection. When the surface northerly wind was strong, strengthened southward advection of cold air over the ocean cooled the water column intensely, whereas wind-enhanced southward advection of warm surface water partly offset the sea surface cooling and resulted in surface temperature cooling that was considerably slower than bottom temperature or even surface temperature warming. These processes together generated strong positive SBTDs. When the surface northerly wind was weak, all of the above processes became weak and resulted in weak positive SBTDs. The relationship with Yellow River runoff was also discussed. This study enriches our knowledge of winter thermal structure in the YS. More observations and coupled physical-biogeochemical simulations are needed to further clarify the impacts on climate and marine ecology.
Regulation of Spatial Changes in Phytoplankton Community by Water Column Stability and Nutrients in the Southern Yellow Sea

Abstract:The southern Yellow Sea (SYS) shows extensive spatial variations in water masses, particularly YS Warm Current Water (YSWCW) and YS Coastal Current Water in cold and YS Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW) and Changjiang Diluted Water in warm seasons. These hydrographic processes result in significant spatial changes in nutrients, stratification, and turbidity, which may highly regulate phytoplankton distribution in the SYS. Here, we provide high spatial resolution data sets of phytoplankton in the SYS in all seasons during 2011-2012. Diatoms thrived in eutrophic Changjiang Diluted Water and YS Coastal Current Water regions. Notably, benthic/meroplanktonic diatoms, including Paralia sulcata and Rhaphoneis spp., were dominant near the Changjiang Estuary and Subei Shoal. However, cryptophytes and haptophytes were dominant in oligotrophic offshore regions controlled by YSWCW and YSBCW. Phytoplankton abundance and chlorophyll a were considerably lower in the YSWCW and YSBCW than in other regions, and the community composition varied significantly among regions. Algal blooms were observed off the SYS coast in spring and near the Changjiang Estuary in summer, which were characterized by abundant nutrients, low turbidity, and a relatively stable water column. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that stratification in cold and nutrients in warm seasons were most important variables correlated with phytoplankton community. Variation partitioning analysis confirmed that spatial changes in phytoplankton community composition were largely structured by nutrients rather than by physical factors in all seasons except winter. Our findings highlight the significance of water column stability and nutrients associated with water mass variation in shaping spatial changes of phytoplankton community in the SYS.

Abstract:To better understand seasonal acidification in the South Yellow Sea (SYS), four field surveys conducted in 2019 and the historical data obtained in 2018 were incorporated in this study. The lowest aragonite saturation state (Ω arag ) value of 1.15 was observed in the central SYS in late autumn. Despite interannual variations in the rate of net community respiration, the quasi-synchronous accumulation of apparent oxygen utilization and excess dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) relative to the air equilibrium were revealed in the SYS cold water mass (SYSCWM) from late spring to autumn. Correspondingly, the two acidification indexes (Ω arag and pH) decreased in logarithmic forms in the SYSCWM in warm seasons. To examine the potential influences of hydrological dynamics on seasonal acidification in the SYSCWM, a three-endmember water-mixing model was applied. The results showed that the cumulative effect of various non-conservative processes on DIC was comparable with the excess DIC relative to the air equilibrium. This implied that the summer and autumn carbonate dynamics and the acidification status of the cold water mass were almost free from the potential impacts of the weak water mixing and internal circulation in summer and autumn in a given year. The Yellow Sea Warm Current carries oceanic DIC into the SYS only in winter and early spring. This study also showed that the re-equilibrium with atmospheric CO 2 at given temperature in early spring determined the initial Ω arag of the SYS before Ω arag declining in late spring, summer, and autumn. The sensitivity of coastal Ω arag changes to DIC addition is subject to both spatial and temporal variations.

Abstract:Based on the data collected during summer,autumn,winter and spring from July 2006 to October 2007 and August 2009,seasonal variations of the dissolved oxygen(DO) and its saturation degrees were analyzed for Changjiang River Estuary and its adjacent waters.The results show that phytoplankton photosynthesis was the dominant processes to control the surface DO saturation in summer and spring in the northern East China Sea,especially in July and August there were large areas of strong photosynthesis off Changjiang River Estuary,Hangzhou Bay and the coastal area of Zhejiang province.In autumn,oxidative decomposition of organic matter was dominant and surface DO was in unsaturated state.In winter,the DO was nearly saturated,which indicates that physical factors such as salinity and temperature were the main control factors.It is also found that DO was undersaturated throughout the year in Changjiang River Estuary and Hangzhou Bay,which might be resulted from the oxidative decomposition of organic matter.
Satellite‐Observed Interannual Variations in Sea Surface Chlorophyll‐a Concentration in the Yellow Sea over the Past Two Decades

Abstract:Ocean chlorophyll-a concentration is a reliable indicator of phytoplankton biomass that plays an important role in controlling the marine ecosystem. Here, we investigated the interannual variations in sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (SSC) in the Yellow Sea and underlying mechanisms with 22 yr (1998-2019) of satellite ocean color observations. Results indicated that SSC showed a positive trend (0.039 mg m(-3) yr(-1) on average) during 1998-2010 and a negative trend (-0.058 mg m(-3) yr(-1) on average) during 2011-2019. Similar SSC trends occurred in the four seasons. These trends had larger magnitudes in inshore waters than in offshore waters. SSC variations were primarily driven by rainfall and anthropogenic nutrient emissions with a possibly secondary contribution from sea surface temperature (SST). During 1998-2010, increased rainfall and anthropogenic nutrient emissions largely enhanced the terrestrial nutrient inputs into the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. Coincidentally, decreased SST might have led to a weakened stratification in summer, favoring upward turbulent diffusion of deeper waters rich in nutrients and chlorophyll-a. These processes resulted in significant increases of surface nutrient concentrations and SSC. During 2011-2019, the opposite processes occurred to generate decreased SSC. The current study highlights the change of SSC trends in the Yellow Sea in the first two decades of the 21st century and physical processes at work, enriching our understanding of ocean chlorophyll-a dynamics in the global shelf seas.Plain Language Summary The Yellow Sea is a shallow marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean. Combined effects of the complicated hydrodynamic conditions and human activities make the Yellow Sea one of the important marine ecosystems in the world, which contributes greatly to the socioeconomic development of bordering coastal countries, namely China, North Korea and South Korea. Previous studies indicated that increased anthropogenic nutrient emissions have predominantly caused a positive trend in sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (which is usually used as a reliable indicator of phytoplankton biomass in the marine ecosystem) in the Yellow Sea. In the current study, based on satellite ocean color observations, we found that sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration in the Yellow Sea showed a positive trend during 1998-2010 and a negative trend during 2011-2019. These variations were primarily driven by rainfall and anthropogenic nutrient emissions with a possibly secondary contribution from sea surface temperature. The current study highlights the important role of the natural factors (primarily rainfall) in causing the change of sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration trends in the Yellow Sea in the first two decades of the 21st century.
Satellite Views Of The Seasonal And Interannual Variability Of Phytoplankton Blooms In The Eastern China Seas Over The Past 14 Yr (1998-2011)

Abstract:The eastern China seas are some of the largest marginal seas in the world, where high primary productivity and phytoplankton blooms are often observed. However, little is known about their systematic variation of phytoplankton blooms on large spatial and long temporal scales due to the difficulty of monitoring bloom events by field measurement. In this study, we investigated the seasonal and interannual variability and long-term changes in phytoplankton blooms in the eastern China seas using a 14 yr (1998-2011) time series of satellite ocean colour data. To ensure a proper satellite dataset to figure out the bloom events, we validated and corrected the satellite-derived chlorophyll concentration (chl a) using extensive in situ datasets from two large cruises. The correlation coefficients between the satellite retrieval data and the in situ chl a on the logarithmic scale were 0.85 and 0.72 for the SeaWiFS and Aqua/MODIS data, respectively. Although satellites generally overestimate the chl a, especially in highly turbid waters, both the in situ and satellite data show that the overestimation of satellite-derived chl a has an upper limit value (10 mu g L-1), which can be used as a threshold for the identification of phytoplankton blooms to avoid the false blooms resulting from turbid waters. Taking 10 mu g L-1 as the threshold, we present the spatial-temporal variability of phytoplankton blooms in the eastern China seas over the past 14 yr. Most blooms occur in the Changjiang Estuary and along the coasts of Zhejiang, with a maximal frequency of 20% (about 73 days per year). The coasts of the northern Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea also have high-frequency blooms (up to 20 %). The blooms show significant seasonal variation, with most occurring in spring (April-June) and summer (July-September). The study also revealed a doubling in bloom intensity in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea during the past 14 yr. The nutrient supply in the eastern China seas might be a major controlling factor in bloom variation. The time series in situ nutrient datasets show that both the nitrate and phosphate concentrations increased more than twofold between 1998 and 2005 in the Yellow Sea. This might be the reason for the doubling of the bloom intensity index in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. In contrast, there has been no significant long-term increase or decrease in the Changjiang Estuary, which might be regulated by the Changjiang River discharge. These results offer a foundation for the study of the influence of phytoplankton blooms on the carbon flux estimation and biogeochemical processes in the eastern China seas.
Drastic Fluctuation in Water Exchange Between the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea Caused by Typhoon Lekima in August 2019: A Numerical Study

Abstract:Connecting the Bohai Sea (BS) and Yellow Sea (YS), the Bohai Strait is vital in controlling physical-biogeochemical conditions in the East Asian marginal seas. In August 2019, Typhoon Lekima moved northward inland into eastern China and caused drastic water exchange through the Bohai Strait. The specific variation and underlying dynamics involved were investigated with observations and high-resolution numerical simulations. Volume transport featured an intense inflow followed by an intense outflow, with a fluctuation magnitude of 1.88 Sv, which was much greater than the seasonal-interannual variations. The corresponding current patterns presented three phases: strait-wide inflow, strait-wide outflow, and outflow in the south and inflow in the north. The strait-wide inflow was driven by strong east-northeasterly winds through local Ekman dynamics. The strait-wide outflow resulted from the dynamic adjustment of ocean currents accompanying the rapid weakening of easterly winds. The third current pattern was part of a large-scale cyclonic circulation in the BS and North YS and was governed by different factors in the southern and northern straits. Further comparisons indicated that transport caused by winter storms and other typhoons in the year had opposite phase variations to that caused by Lekima. The underlying dynamics mainly involved local Ekman dynamics and/or remote wind forcing via the propagation of coastal trapped waves but could differ greatly from events. Finally, we found that to a large extent, geostrophic transport derived from the sea surface height difference across the Bohai Strait could be used as actual transport during synoptic weather events.
Effects of warming, eutrophication and climate variability on acidification of the seasonally stratified North Yellow Sea over the past 40 years

Abstract:The North Yellow Sea (NYS) is a productive marginal sea of the western North Pacific. In summer and autumn, CaCO3 saturation states beneath the seasonal thermocline in the NYS have frequently fallen below critical levels, indicating that marine calcifying organisms are under threat. To explore the long-term evolution of the acidification of the NYS, we reconstructed seasonal variations in subsurface aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) and pH during 1976-2017, using wintertime and summertime temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH data mainly from a quality-controlled oceanographic database. Over the past 40 years, the wintertime warming rate in the NYS was twice the rate of global ocean surface warming. Warming-induced decrease in CO2 solubility canceled out a part of the wintertime Ωarag decrease caused by atmospheric CO2 increase, and also had minor effect on pH changes in winter. Although the NYS is a semi-enclosed marginal sea, its interannual variations of wintertime temperature, salinity, pH and Ωarag were correlated to Pacific Decadal Oscillation with a lag of 2-3 years. Due to the eutrophication-induced enhancement of net community respiration beneath the seasonal thermocline, long-term declines of bottom-water Ωarag and pH in summer were substantially faster than the declines of assumed air-equilibrated Ωarag and pH in spring. Over the past 40 years, the amplitudes of seasonal variations of bottom-water Ωarag and pH from spring to summer/autumn have increased by 4-7 times. This amplification has pushed the NYS towards the critical threshold of net community CaCO3 dissolution at a pace faster than that forecast under scenarios of atmospheric CO2 increase. In summary, our results provide insights into the combined effects of ocean warming, eutrophication, atmospheric CO2 rise and climate variability on coastal hydrochemistry, explaining how the environmental stresses on local marine calcifying organisms and the benthic ecosystem increased over the past 40 years.

Abstract:To better understand the relationship between subsurface seasonal deoxygenation and acidification in the Yellow Sea and northern East China Sea (ECS), we examined carbonate system parameters and dissolved oxygen (DO) of seven field surveys conducted in 2017–2018, spanning all four seasons. Low pHT values of 7.71–7.80 and critically low aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) values of 1.07–1.40 along with undersaturated DO of mostly higher than 150 μmol O2 kg–1 occurred in the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass area in summer and autumn, while hypoxic DO values of 49–63 μmol O2 kg–1 and extremely low pHT values of 7.68–7.74 as well as critically low Ωarag values of 1.21–1.39 were observed in the northern ECS in July 2018. At the beginning of warm-season stratification formation, the cold Yellow Sea waters had much higher DO but lower Ωarag values than those in relatively warmer ECS waters, while yearly initial pHT values rarely exhibited differences between the two coastal seas. During warm seasons, the central Yellow Sea accumulated respiration products beneath the thermocline in summer and autumn, while the northern ECS bottom waters preserved them only in summer. This study highlights fundamental roles of wintertime carbon dioxide (CO2) solubility along a north-to-south latitude gradient in the coastal acidification development. In comparison with the relatively low-latitude northern ECS subject to seasonal hypoxia, relatively high-latitude Yellow Sea exhibits higher CO2 solubility in winter and longer respiration-product accumulations in warm seasons, leading to lower Ωarag in the central Yellow Sea than those in the northern ECS. However, the present-day central Yellow Sea is free from hypoxia.

Due to complex physical and biogeochemical conditions, the southern Yellow-East China Sea is an ideal site for studying carbonate chemistry variability. The carbonate system was investigated in the area in spring of 2017 and summer of 2018. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) concentrations were higher in the SYS than the ECS due to material from carbonate weathering and erosion carried by the Yellow River. High pH and low DIC and TA were observed in the Zhe-Min Coastal Current in spring due to high primary productivity caused by Changjiang River input and the Taiwan Warm Current. Temperature and biological activity were the primary drivers controlling the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in the SYS, pCO2 was controlled by primary productivity related to nutrients carried by the Changjiang River and physical mixing in the Changjiang River plume and inner/middle shelves of the ECS, whereas temperature was the dominant factor determining pCO2 distributions in the ECS outer shelf waters influenced by the Kuroshio Current. Overall, the entire study area shifted from a CO2 sink (−4.18 ± 5.60 mmol m−2 d−1) to a weak source (1.02 ± 4.87 mmol m−2 d−1) from spring to summer. Specifically, the SYS and ECS offshore waters changed from CO2 sinks in spring to sources in summer, while the Changjiang River plume was always a CO2 sink.

Abstract:To assess the progression of ocean acidification in the South Yellow Sea (SYS), the aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) was determined from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) in the surface and bottom waters of the SYS in spring and autumn. The Ωarag exhibited large spatiotemporal variations in the SYS; DIC was a major factor controlling the Ωarag variations, whereas temperature, salinity, and TA were minor factors. Surface DIC concentrations were mainly influenced by the lateral transport of the DIC-enriched Yellow River waters and DIC-depleted East China Sea Surface Water; bottom DIC concentrations were affected by aerobic remineralization in spring and autumn. Ocean acidification is now seriously progressing in the SYS, particularly in the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW) where the mean value of Ωarag substantially decreased from 1.55 in spring to 1.22 in autumn. All Ωarag values measured in the YSBCW in autumn were lower than the critical threshold value of 1.5 necessary for the survival of calcareous organisms.

Abstract:During the summers of 2009 and 2013, seawater pH and concentrations of dissolved oxygen, inorganic carbon, and nutrients were measured off the Changjiang estuary in the East China Sea. The 2009 cruise captured the effects of Typhoon Morakot; the 2013 cruise sampled more typical conditions (no typhoon). Data from both years indicate a close correlation between high primary productivity in surface waters and hypoxia in bottom waters. Based on these observations, we developed a conceptual model to guide an exploration of processes contributing to the formation of summertime bottom hypoxia. A mixing-model analysis of the 2009 data identified a surface diatom bloom as the major (70-80%) source of the organic carbon that decomposed and ultimately led to bottom water hypoxia. Within the Changjiang River plume, depth-integrated net biological production in the water column was 1.8 g C m(-2) d(-1), indicating strong autotrophic production, which in turn led to a high respiration rate of 1.2 g C m(-2) d(-1) in the bottom water. During both cruises, strong surface-to-bottom physical and metabolic coupling was evident. In 2009, storm-driven inputs of nutrients from elevated river discharge and strong vertical mixing helped to fuel the rapid development of a surface diatom bloom. Afterwards, stratified conditions re-established, newly formed labile organic matter sank, and bottom water oxygen was quickly consumed to an extent that hypoxia and acidification developed. To our knowledge, the observed rate of hypoxia and acidification development (within 6 d) is the fastest yet reported for the Changjiang River plume.

Abstract:The Water Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) is a unique engineering measure that has been regularly performed to reduce reservoir sedimentation and increase the flood capacity of the Yellow River in China since 2002. As a side effect, the WSRS greatly increases the monthly input flux of nutrients to the Bohai Sea (BHS) in summer, potentially exacerbating eutrophication levels therein and subsequently affecting the growth of phytoplankton. However, its influence on the Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) dynamics over the BHS is still poorly understood. In this study, two approaches were adopted to investigate it: 1) long-term in-situ observations and satellite-derived data of surface Chl-a were used to study its seasonal variations before and since 2002, and 2) one 1D physical-biological coupled model was developed to evaluate the impact of WSRS on seasonal Chl-a. The results showed that the surface Chl-a exhibited two peaks in spring and autumn until 2002, but has exhibited only one peak in spring-summer since 2002. Satellite-derived Chl-a concentrations in spring-summer since 2002 have increased by 56% compared to those until 2002. The simulated results showed that the change in Yellow River discharge induced by the WSRS has resulted in the appearance of high concentrations of Chl-a in summer over the Central Bohai Sea since 2002. The WSRS increased the ratio of added Chl-a owing to the riverine nutrients to total Chl-a by 19% compared to that until 2002. Overall, WSRS greatly affects the seasonal cycling of Chl-a in the Bohai Sea, and the side effect needs to be considered.

Abstract:The interplay of global climate change and anthropogenic activities has significantly affected the carbon cycle in coastal ocean environments. Consequently, further investigation into the carbonate system, carbon source and sink processes, and acidification mechanisms is essential. This study examined the surface carbonate system offshore of Qingdao, utilizing data from nine spring cruises in 2011–2019. The inter-annual variations in sea surface temperature revealed a gradual upward trend, whereas chlorophyll a (Chl- a ) and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) exhibited alternating trends of increase and decrease. Over the period from 2011 to 2019, pH levels ranged from 8.00 to 8.19, partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ) values varied between 187.8 and 364.1 μatm, and calcium carbonate saturation (Ω arag ) ranged from 3.22 to 4.79. From 2011 to 2017, both pH and Ω arag showed a decreasing trend, attributed to the increasing influence of respiration. In contrast, an upward trend was observed for both parameters during 2018 and 2019, indicating a decline in respiration's contribution. Biological processes, especially the increase in respiration caused by the nutrients and organic matter released through human activities, were pivotal in determining spatial variations in p CO 2 and Ω arag offshore, while the impact of mixing processes and temperature was comparatively negligible. Furthermore, the Ulva prolifera bloom event in July 2015 significantly affected the coastal waters of Qingdao's carbonate system when compared to the no-bloom period in March 2015. Overall, the study area functioned as a sink for atmospheric CO 2 in the spring. The fluctuations in air-sea CO 2 fluxes corresponded with changes in Δ p CO 2 and wind speeds, with surface seawater air-sea CO 2 fluxes ranging from −17.7 to 12.2 mmol m −2 d −1 between 2011 and 2019, yielding an average flux of −9.4 ± 5.3 mmol m −2 d −1 .

Abstract:Marine carbon sinks act as a buffer against global warming, but raise the risk of acidification, especially in the marginal shelf seas which are rich in terrigenous carbon input. The Chinese Bohai Sea performs generally as a weak carbon source while carbon fluxes (fCO2), pH, and aragonite saturation states (Ωarag) vary in time and space under intensive land-sea interaction. However, there are still 1) insufficient spatiotemporal resolution in existing remotely sensed retrieval of carbon flux, 2) inadequate analytic mechanism for existing empirical models, which are not suitable for case II waters in Bohai Sea, and 3) limited research on remotely sensed retrieval of acidification risk expressed as pH and Ωarag. Thus, we proposed a semi-analytical mechanism algorithm (MeSAA) to gain seawater partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2 sw) with hour-level GOCI imagery and seawater carbonate equilibrium equation (CO2SYS). With the assistance of ERA5 reanalysis data, the gained pCO2 sw was then used to obtain fCO2 by using the sea-air CO2 partial pressure difference (ΔpCO2) method. Similarly, with the assistance of remotely sensed retrieval, two indices, pH and Ωarag were also gained from CO2SYS to identify the acidification risk. The results showed that Bohai Sea was a weak carbon source with the positive values of fCO2 (0.5–6 mmol C·m−2·day−1) and total emission (0.956 Tg C·yr−1). It suffered from a high acidification risk, especially in three bays with low values of Ωarag (1.15–1.3) from May to September 2011. Although photosynthetic carbon sequestration was intensive near shore, it could not consume the large amount of the rich carbon input, and resulting a monthly increase for pCO2 sw and fCO2 and a monthly decrease for pH and Ωarag from May to September. The distribution of pCO2 sw was in accord with a former study, but the values were not. The local parameter adjustment of MeSAA in the Bohai Sea was analyzed for this issue, so did the effect of uncertainty analysis of mapping at different time scales (hourly and daily). Moreover, the contrast of absolute deviation and relative deviation on different time scales verified the advantage of hour-level GOCI imagery in improving assessment accuracies. This study gained a more precise change trend of pCO2 sw, fCO2, pH, and Ωarag in the Bohai Sea from May to September 2011, which would be beneficial to the study of the carbon cycle in the marginal sea of the shelf under the conditions of climate change.

Abstract:Ocean acidification in coastal seawaters is a complex process, with coastal pH being affected by numerous factors including watershed and biological processes that also support metabolically diverse bacterial communities. The world's largest macroalgal blooms have occurred consecutively in the Yellow Sea over the last 13 years. In particular, algal mats formed by Yellow Sea green tides (YSGT) significantly influence coastal environments. Herein, we hypothesized that 1) inorganic carbonate chemistry in coastal areas is altered by diel metabolism of these giant algal mats and that 2) bacterial community composition in diffusive boundary layers might be altered along diel cycles due to algal mat metabolism. In situ studies indicated that algal mat metabolism led to changes in diel pH and CO2 in affected seawaters. Such metabolic activities could intensify diel pH fluctuations in algal mat diffusive boundary layers, as noted by pH fluctuations of 0.22 ± 0.01 units, and pCO2 fluctuations of 214.62 ± 29.37 μatm per day. In contrast, pH fluctuations of 0.11 ± 0.02 units and pCO2 fluctuations of 79.02 ± 42.70 μatm were noted in unaffected areas. Furthermore, the bacterial community composition associated with diffusive algal boundary layers, including those of ambient bacteria and epiphytic bacteria, exhibited diel changes, while endophytic bacterial communities were relatively stable. Flavobacteriaceae were particularly highly abundant taxa in the ambient and epiphytic bacterial communities and exhibited increased abundances at night but sharp decreases in abundances during daytime. Flavobacteriaceae are heterotrophic taxa that could contribute to coastal area acidification at night due to the transformation of organic carbon to inorganic carbon. These results provide new insights to understand the variability in coastal ocean acidification via harmful algal blooms while providing a framework for evaluating the effects of YSGT on costal carbon cycling.
