Abstract:The 2024 Mw 7.5 Noto Peninsula, Japan, earthquake was initiated within the source region of intense swarm activity. To reveal the mainshock early process, we relocated the earthquake hypocenters and found that many key phenomena, including the mainshock initiation, foreshocks, swarm earthquakes, and deep aseismic slip, occurred at parts of a previously unrecognized fault in intricate fault network. This fault is subparallel (several kilometers deeper) to a known active fault, and the mainshock initiation and foreshocks occurred at the front of a 2‐year westward swarm migration. The initiation location coincides with the destination of the upward migration of a deeper earthquake cluster via several smaller faults. Fluid supply, small earthquakes, and aseismic slip on the fault likely triggered the mainshock, leading to the first major rupture at the western region, propagating further to the west and east sides, resulting in an Mw7.5 event, exceeding 100 km in length.

Abstract:A devastating earthquake with moment magnitude 7.5 occurred in the Noto Peninsula in central Japan on 1 January 2024. We estimate the rupture evolution of this earthquake from teleseismic P‐wave data using the potency‐density tensor inversion method, which provides information on the spatiotemporal slip distribution including fault orientations. The results show a long and quiet initial rupture phase that overlaps with regions of preceding earthquake swarms and associated aseismic deformation. The following three major rupture episodes evolve on segmented, differently oriented faults bounded by the initial rupture region. The irregular initial rupture process followed by the multi‐scale rupture growth is considered to be controlled by the preceding seismic and aseismic processes and the geometric complexity of the fault system. Such a discrete rupture scenario, including the triggering of an isolated fault rupture, adds critical inputs on the assessment of strong ground motion and associated damages for future earthquakes.

Abstract:The distribution of slip during an earthquake and how it propagates among faults in the subduction system play a major role in seismic and tsunami hazards, yet they are poorly understood because offshore observations are often lacking. Here we derive the slip distribution and rupture evolution during the 2016 Mw 7.9 Kaikōura (New Zealand) earthquake that reconcile the surface rupture, space geodetic measurements, seismological and tsunami waveform records. We use twelve fault segments, with eleven in the crust and one on the megathrust interface, to model the geodetic data and match the major features of the complex surface ruptures. Our modeling result indicates that a large portion of the moment is distributed on the subduction interface, making a significant contribution to the far field surface deformation and teleseismic body waves. The inclusion of local strong motion and teleseismic waveform data in the joint inversion reveals a unilateral rupture towards northeast with a relatively low averaged rupture speed of ∼1.5 km/s. The first 30 s of the rupture took place on the crustal faults with oblique slip motion and jumped between fault segments that have large differences in strike and dip. The peak moment release occurred at ∼65 s, corresponding to simultaneous rupture of both plate interface and the overlying splay faults with rake angle changes progressively from thrust to strike-slip. The slip on the Papatea fault produced more than 2 m of offshore uplift, making a major contribution to the tsunami at the Kaikōura station, while the northeastern end of the rupture can explain the main features at the Wellington station. Our inversions and simulations illuminate complex up-dip rupture behavior that should be taken into consideration in both seismic and tsunami hazard assessment. The extreme complex rupture behavior also brings new challenges to the earthquake dynamic simulations and understanding the physics of earthquakes.

Abstract:To reveal the connections between the 2024 moment magnitude ( M w ) 7.5 Noto earthquake in Japan and the seismicity swarms that preceded it, we investigated its rupture process through near-source waveform analysis and source imaging techniques, combining seismic and geodetic datasets. We found notable complexity in the initial rupture stages. A strong fault asperity, which remained unbroken in preceding seismic swarms, slowed down the rupture. Then, a second rupture initiated at the opposite edge of the asperity, and the asperity succumbed to double-pincer rupture fronts. The failure of this high-stress drop asperity drove the earthquake into a large-scale event. Our observations help unravel the crucial role of fault asperities in controlling swarm migration and rupture propagation and underscore the need for detailed seismological and interdisciplinary studies to assess seismic risk in swarm-prone regions.

Abstract:An unexpected Mw7.45 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula on 1 January 2024, preceded by several long‐living earthquake swarms, providing a valuable opportunity to study seismic and aseismic slips, as well as their interactions. We derived coseismic and 19‐day postseismic slip distributions by inverting co‐ and post‐seismic displacements from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data. The inverted coseismic slip distribution shows two slip patches, with a maximum slip of ∼4 m. The early postseismic afterslip is 0.1–0.25 m within coseismic slip asperity and 0.1–0.6 m northward of the rupture area. The afterslip within the rupture area is accompanied by numerous aftershocks and coincides with a ∼6 MPa stress drop, suggesting that aftershocks are likely driven by the afterslip. The pattern of poroelastic rebound implies a potential effect of fluid flow on aftershock triggering. This study sheds lights on the intricate interplay between seismic and aseismic processes following large earthquakes.

Abstract:The propagation of the 2021 M(w)7.4 Maduo earthquake rupture from the central Jiangcuo fault (JCF) onto its eastern terminus, in the northern Tibetan Plateau, exhibits a complex surface geometry with conjugate faults, bends, and stepovers. About 50 km east of the 2021 earthquake epicenter, which is located at Maduo County within the Tibetan plateau, the surface rupture along the Jiangcuo eastern fault (JCEF), deviating <20 degrees anticlockwise from the general strike, provides a valuable chance for understanding rupture processes through a geometrically complex fault network where >= 4 interactional faults come together. Using orthophotos derived from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey with a ground resolution of 6 cm, complemented by field investigations, we mapped the surface rupture in detail and measured the coseismic slip distribution of the JCEF. Our mapping illuminates sporadic breaks of tectonic origin in the sand dune area immediately near the branching point and a more simple, linear rupture trace eastward of the junction. The high-resolution slip measurements along the JCEF follow approximately a dogtail shape to the eastern termination with a maximum left-lateral coseismic slip of 2.9 m at a fault bend. We found linear surface ruptures along the NW-strike geologic faults, indicating triggered coseismic slip on conjugate faults. The intersections with conjugate faults overlap with discontinuities in rupture geometry and interference of surface slip on the main fault. We propose that triggered slip on pre-mapped Quaternary faults impacted the rupture propagation onto the JCEF. The complexity in rupture geometry suggests fault interaction in the eastern tip zone of the Maduo rupture.

Abstract:On January 1, 2024, a devastating M 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. Utilizing information from the first six days after the earthquake, this article analyzes the seismic source characteristics, disaster situation, and emergency response of this earthquake. The results show: 1) The earthquake rupture was of the thrust type, with aftershock distribution showing a north-east-oriented belt-like feature of 150 km. 2) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), observations detected significant westward to north-westward co-seismic displacement near the epicenter, with the maximum horizontal displacement reaching 1.2 m and the vertical uplift displacement reaching 4 m. A two-segment fault inversion model fits the observational data well. 3) Near the epicenter, large Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) were observed, with the maxima reaching 145 cm/s and 2681 gal, respectively, and the intensity reached the highest level 7 on the Japanese (Japan Meteorological Agency, JMA) intensity standard, which is higher than level 10 of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) standard. 4) The observation of the very rare multiple strong pulse-like ground motion (PLGM) waveform poses a topic worthy of research in the field of earthquake engineering. 5) As of January 7, the earthquake had left 128 deaths and 560 injuries in Ishikawa Prefecture, with 1305 buildings completely or partially destroyed, and had triggered a chain of disasters including tsunamis, fires, slope failures, and road damage. Finally, this paper summarizes the emergency rescue, information dissemination, and other disaster response and management measures taken in response to this earthquake. This work provides a reference case for carrying out effective responses, and offers lessons for handling similar events in the future.

Abstract:The 1 January 2024 Noto-Hanto (Noto Peninsula) earthquake (M JMA 7.6) generated strong ground motion, large crustal deformation and tsunamis that caused significant damage in the region. Around Noto Peninsula, both offshore submarine and partially inland active faults have been identified by previous projects: Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and Japan Sea Earthquake and Tsunami Research Project (JSPJ). We inverted the tsunami waveforms recorded on 6 wave gauges and 12 tide gauges around Sea of Japan and the GNSS data recorded at 53 stations in Noto Peninsula to estimate the slip amount and seismic moment on each of active faults. The results show that the 2024 coseismic slips were 3.5 m, 3.2 m, and 3.2 m on subfaults NT4, NT5 and NT6 of the JSPJ model, located on the northern coast of Noto Peninsula and dipping toward southeast. A smaller slip, 1.0 m, estimated on NT8 on the southwestern end of the 2024 rupture, may be attributed to its previous rupture during the 2007 Noto earthquake. The total length of these four faults is ~ 100 km, and the seismic moment is 1.90 × 10 20 Nm (Mw = 7.5). Almost no slip was estimated on the northeastern subfaults NT2 and NT3, which dip northwestward, opposite to NT4–NT5–NT6, and western subfault NT8. Aftershocks including the M JMA 6.1 event occurred in the NT2–NT3 region, but they are smaller than the potential magnitude (Mw 7.1) those faults can release in a tsunamigenic earthquake. Similar features are also found for the MLIT model; the 2024 slip was only on F43 along the northern coast of Noto Peninsula, and northeastern F42 did not rupture, leaving potential for future event.

Abstract:Landscapes are shaped by tectonic, climatic, and surface processes over geological timescales, but we rarely witness the events of marked landscape change. The moment magnitude 7.5 Noto Peninsula earthquake in central Japan was caused by a large thrust faulting, up to nearly 10 meters of slip, that expanded more than 150 kilometers along the fault zone. The deformation field reconstructed from satellite data and field surveys reveals up to 4.4 meters of uplift and associated coastal advance along the entire northern coast of the peninsula, meter-scale systematic movement of the mountain slopes consistent with slip on flexural faults, and activation of secondary inland faults, suggesting synchronized ruptures. The findings show excellent consistency between the coseismic deformation and geomorphic features and provide a vivid example of the role of a major earthquake in landscape formation.

Abstract:Inland crustal earthquakes usually occur in the brittle upper crust (0–20 km depths), but the 6 September 2018 Eastern Iburi earthquake (M 6.7) took place in southern Hokkaido with a focal depth of ~37 km, causing 41 fatalities and serious damage to the local infrastructure. The reason why this event was so deep and its causal mechanism are still unclear. In this work we study the three-dimensional P and S wave seismic attenuation (1/Q) structure in the source zone of the 2018 Iburi earthquake. Our results show that this event occurred at the boundary between the Sorachi-Yezo belt (low Q) and the dipping Northeastern (NE) Japan arc (high Q) that is descending beneath the Kuril arc. The collision between the NE Japan and Kuril arcs as well as fluids from dehydration of the subducting Pacific plate caused this big event and its unusual focal depth. Similar attenuation structures are revealed in source zones of the 1970 Hidaka earthquake (M 6.7) and the 1982 Urakawa-oki earthquake (M 7.1), suggesting that they were caused by similar processes. We think that large earthquakes will take place again on the active thrust faults in southern Hokkaido in the coming decades. Hence, we should pay much attention to the seismic risk and prepare for reduction of earthquake hazards there.

Abstract:On 14 November 2016, northeastern South Island of New Zealand was struck by a major moment magnitude (Mw) 7.8 earthquake. Field observations, in conjunction with interferometric synthetic aperture radar, Global Positioning System, and seismology data, reveal this to be one of the most complex earthquakes ever recorded. The rupture propagated northward for more than 170 kilometers along both mapped and unmapped faults before continuing offshore at the island's northeastern extent. Geodetic and field observations reveal surface ruptures along at least 12 major faults, including possible slip along the southern Hikurangi subduction interface; extensive uplift along much of the coastline; and widespread anelastic deformation, including the ~8-meter uplift of a fault-bounded block. This complex earthquake defies many conventional assumptions about the degree to which earthquake ruptures are controlled by fault segmentation and should motivate reevaluation of these issues in seismic hazard models.
Structural Heterogeneity Controlled Rupture Process of the 2021 Mw 7.1 Fukushima, Japan, Earthquake Revealed by Joint Inversion of Seismic and Geodetic Data

Abstract:We determined the rupture model of the 2021 Mw 7.1 Fukushima earthquake near northeastern Japan in this study and adopted this model to investigate the cause of this earthquake and its aftershocks. The rupture model was obtained through joint inversion of teleseismic, strong-motion and geodetic data. It is shown that the slips were predominantly distributed on the southwest side of the earthquake epicenter, indicating a unilateral rupture event. We observed that the seismic moment was released in three time periods, producing four slip patches on the fault plane. Through comparison, we demonstrated that our joint inversion model was more reliable in describing the rupture process of the Fukushima earthquake than the automatic inversion models determined using only strong-motion data. By jointly analyzing the slip distribution and seismic velocity structure, we found a good correlation between the slip patches and VP/VS anomalies, suggesting that structural heterogeneities along the fault zone played a critical role in controlling the rupture process of the Fukushima earthquake. In addition, most aftershocks were located in the region characterized by small slips and high VP/VS, and we demonstrated that they were caused by stress changes due to the presence of fluids and the rupture of the mainshock.
The role of fluids in earthquake swarms in northeastern Noto Peninsula, central Japan: insights from source mechanisms

Abstract:A prolonged earthquake swarm has persisted since June 2018 in northeastern Noto Peninsula (central Japan), with activity focused into distinct southern, western, northern, and eastern clusters. To explore the role of fluids in the occurrence of this swarm, we analyzed the focal mechanisms of the earthquakes occurring from 1 January 2018 to 30 November 2022 and performed stress tensor inversions. The western, northern, and eastern clusters were dominated by a reverse fault-type mechanism with a horizontal P-axis oriented NW–SE. One of the nodal planes of those mechanisms aligns closely with the precisely relocated hypocenter distribution. The stress fields in these three clusters, as determined by stress tensor inversion, have maximum principal stresses oriented horizontally in the NW–SE direction and minimum principal stresses oriented vertically, aligning with the regional stress field. From these focal mechanisms and this stress field, we derived small misfit angles and large slip tendencies. These findings suggest that, in these three clusters, fluids diffused into faults largely aligned with the regional stress field, resulting in earthquakes with compatible focal mechanisms. Conversely, normal and strike-slip fault-type focal mechanisms, which are unfavorable to the regional stress field, dominated in the southern cluster. The estimated stress fields, deviating from the regional stress field, have maximum principal stresses closer to vertical and minimum principal stress oriented horizontally in the ENE–WSW direction. For earthquakes deeper than 15 km, this local stress field results in relatively larger misfit angles and lower slip tendency than the other clusters. These results suggest that those earthquakes in the southern cluster occurred on misoriented fault planes due to elevated pore fluid pressures. These findings provide strong evidence of the ascent of high-pore-pressure fluids from depth in the southern cluster and their subsequent diffusion into a southeast-dipping fault zone.

Abstract:The January 1, 2024 Noto Peninsula M w 7.5 tsunamigenic earthquake, with at least 241 deaths, was the most destructive event in Japan following the March 2011 M w 9.0 catastrophic event. We conducted field surveys in the affected area 24 days after the event to document tsunami heights, runups, coseismic coastal uplift and damage to coastal structures. Here, we present the results of the surveys and analyze tsunami height distribution and associated damage. In our survey of 29 locations, tsunami runups and heights varied in the ranges of 4.4–6.2 m, and 1.0–4.4 m, respectively. Notably, Joetsu, the farthest location from the epicenter in our field survey, recorded the highest runup of 6.2 m, which is attributed to the directivity effect of tsunami waves. The maximum surveyed runup of 6.2 m closely aligns with the reported maximum fault slip of 4–6 m for this earthquake, confirming a long-established rule of thumb. Coastal crustal uplifts of up to 1.6 m have rendered many ports unsuitable for use. We identified three failure mechanisms affecting coastal structures: overturning caused by tsunami backwash, damage resulting from tsunami inundation currents and wave pressure, and impacts from floating objects and debris.

Abstract:The 1 January 2024, moment magnitude MW 7.5 Noto Peninsula earthquake ruptured in complex ways, challenging analysis of its tsunami generation. We present tsunami models informed by a 6‐subevent centroid moment tensor (CMT) model obtained through Bayesian inversion of teleseismic and strong motion data. We identify two distinct bilateral rupture episodes. Initial, onshore rupture toward the southwest is followed by delayed re‐nucleation at the hypocenter, likely aided by fault weakening, causing significant seafloor uplift to the northeast. We construct a complex multi‐fault uplift model, validated against geodetic observations, that aligns with known fault system geometries and is critical in modeling the observed tsunami. The simulations can explain tsunami wave amplitude, timing, and polarity of the leading wave, which are crucial for tsunami early warning. Upon comparison with alternative source models and analysis of 2000 multi‐CMT ensemble solutions, we highlight the importance of incorporating complex source effects for realistic tsunami simulations.

Abstract:The mechanism and rupture process of the giant 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) are still poorly understood due to lack of permanent near-field observations. Using seismic arrival times recorded by dense seismograph networks on land and at ocean floor, we determine a detailed seismic tomography model of the megathrust zone beneath the Tohoku forearc. Our results show that the coseismic slip of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake initiated at a boundary between a down-dip high-velocity anomaly and an up-dip low-velocity anomaly. The slow anomaly at shallow depths near the Japan trench may reflect low-rigidity materials that are close to the free surface, resulting in large slip and weak high-frequency radiation. Our new tomographic model can account for not only large slip near the trench but also weak high-frequency radiation from the shallow rupture areas.

(2023, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL106023) analyzed a swarm beneath the Noto Peninsula in Japan that, after more than two years of moderate‐magnitude seismicity, triggered the moment magnitude (Mw) 6.2 Suzu mainshock in May 2023. Based on high‐precision earthquake locations and a slip inversion of the mainshock, these authors found that the Mw 6.2 Suzu earthquake occurred on the updip extension of a fault that was active during the swarm, likely driven by increased fluid pressure. After publication of that paper, a much larger and more destructive Mw 7.5 event occurred nearby on 1 January 2024. These events underscore the potential for swarms to be precursors to large, damaging earthquakes. Forecasting the eventual evolution of swarms is currently very challenging but could be aided in the future by new observations and models.

Abstract:The underlying mechanism of the ongoing seismic swarm in the Noto Peninsula, Japan, which generates earthquakes at 10 times the average regional rate, remains elusive. We capture the evolution of the subsurface stress state by monitoring changes in seismic wave velocities over an 11-year period. A sustained long-term increase in seismic velocity that is seasonally modulated drops before the earthquake swarm. We use a three-dimensional hydromechanical model to quantify environmentally driven variations in excess pore pressure, revealing its crucial role in governing the seasonal modulation with a stress sensitivity of 6 × 10 −9 per pascal. The decrease in seismic velocity aligns with vertical surface uplift, suggesting potential fluid migration from a high–pore pressure zone at depth. Stress changes induced by abnormally intense snow falls contribute to initiating the swarm through subsequent perturbations to crustal pore pressure.

Abstract:Vertical crustal movements associated with large earthquakes excite various kinds of atmospheric waves. They propagate upward and often disturb ionosphere. Here, I report a case for the 2024 January 1 M w 7.5 earthquake that occurred in the northern tip of the Noto Peninsula, Central Japan, using a dense network of multi-GNSS receivers. A rectangular-shaped positive anomaly of ionospheric total electron content emerged ∼9 min after the mainshock. The initial sharp peak was composed of two acoustic wave pulses excited at the two ends of the fault spanning ∼100 km. It was followed by a series of smaller-amplitude broad peaks, the largest of which was possibly excited by a slow fault rupture near the NE edge of the fault ∼8 min after the mainshock. These signatures become large where the wavefronts overlap with those of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances, suggesting possible enhancement of the coseismic signals by downward displacements of high electron density regions in the ionosphere.

Abstract:The 2018 M(W)6.7 Iburi earthquake shocked the eastern Iburi region to the west of the Hidaka Collision Zone in Hokkaido, which is a destructive inland earthquake. We resolved the kinematic rupture process of the event by combining strong motions (SM) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in a joint inversion. The results reveal that the duration of the whole rupture is about 17s, yielding a total seismic moment of 1.4 x 10(19) N.m (M-W=6.7). The main slip area is located at a depth of approximately 24 km with a peak slip of similar to 0.8m above the hypocenter. The comparison with the regional velocity model shows the earthquake was initiated in the upper mantle, while the majority of slips are located in the lower crust, which is an "aseismic" domain in the typical sandwich model. The location of the major slip area is consistent with a high-conductivity volume. We proposed a mechanism of low frictional property (<0.3) produced by high pore pressure to explain the abnormal high dip angle and centroid depth located in the ductile lower-crust. Aftershocks are distributed in areas where the Coulomb frictional stress increases due to co-seismic displacement with a mechanism conjugating to the mainshock.
