Abstract:This study looked at the effects of different extraction protocols on the biochemical properties of compost extract (CE) and its effect on the growth of Dahlia pinnata Cav. (dahlia), Consolida ajacis (L.) Schur (delphinium), and Centaurea cyanus L (cornflower). Composted green waste (CGW) extract was prepared at compost-to-water ratios of 8:1, 8:2, 8:3, and 8:4, employing preservation methods of sterilization and refrigeration, or direct refrigeration. Sterilized CE with compost-to-water ratio of 8:3 exhibited superior biochemical properties (pH value, electrical conductivity, nutrient contents, and enzyme activities). The stem width, root length, flower number, root-shoot ratio, and total chlorophyll contents of dahlia cultivated in the optimal CE significantly increased by 33%, 44%, 115%, 110%, and 28%, respectively; the stem width, root length, flower number, root-shoot ratio, and total chlorophyll content of delphinium in the optimal CE greatly increased by 39%, 25%, 76%, 31%, and 31%, respectively; the stem width, root length, flower number, root-shoot ratio, and total chlorophyll content of cornflower in the optimal CE remarkably increased by 29%, 27%, 108%, 44%, and 17%, respectively. Therefore, the results indicated that CE at a compost-to-water ratio of 8:3, coupled with sterilization and refrigeration effectively promoted plant growth, offering a superior alternative to CGW.

Abstract:Wastewaters from farm and composting operations are often rich in certain nutrients that can be reutilized in crop production. Liners of silverleaf dogwood (CornusalbaL. `Argenteo-marginata'), common ninebark [Physocarpusopulifolius(L.) Maxim.], and `Anthony Waterer' spirea (Spiraea×bumaldaBurvenich) were grown in 6-L containers filled with a medium consisting of 73% bark, 22% peat, and 5% pea gravel, by volume. Plants were fertigated daily via a computer-controlled multi-fertilizer injector with three recirculated fertilizer treatments: 1) a stock solution with macro- and micronutrients, electrical conductivity (EC) 2.2 dS·m-1; 2) wastewater from a mushroom farm; and 3) process wastewater from anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste. The wastewaters used in both treatments 2 and 3 were diluted with tap water, and the computer was programmed to amend, dispense, and recirculate nutrients, based on the same target EC as in treatment 1. For comparison, there was a traditional controlled-release fertilizer treatment [Nutryon 17–5–12 (17N–2P–10K) plus micronutrients incorporated into the medium at a rate of 6.5 kg·m-1, nutrients not recirculated]. All three species responded similarly to the three recirculated fertilizer treatments. Growth in the recirculated treatments was similar and significantly higher than that obtained with controlled-release fertilizer. A similar trend in EC was observed in the media near harvest. Throughout the study, there was no sign of nutrient toxicity or deficiency with any of the species or treatment.
Effects of vermicomposts and composts on plant growth in horticultural container media and soil

Abstract:Summary Vermicomposts, which are produced by the fragmentation of organic wastes by earthworms, have a fine particulate structure and contain nutrients in forms that are readily available for plant uptake. In greenhouse trials, the growth of marigold and tomato seedlings, in a commercial horticultural potting medium (Metro-Mix 360), was enhanced significantly upon substitution of Metro-Mix 360 with 10% or 20% vermicomposted pig solids or vermicomposted food wastes, when all required nutrients were supplied. Same enhancement in marigold and tomato seedlings' growth occurred also upon substitution of Metro-Mix 360 with composted biosolids, but not with leaf compost. The shoot dry weights of raspberry plants, grown in a mineral soil mixed with vermicomposted pig wastes weighed more than those grown in unfertilized control soil, and were as great as those in soil receiving a complete fertilizer treatment. By comparison, raspberry shoot growth in soils amended with yard, leaf or bark composts, was poorer than that in the unfertilized control soil. Amending the soil with 4% chicken manure compost killed most of the raspberry plants. However, plant mortality was reduced and growth restored when the chicken manure compost was mixed with vermicomposted pig solids, but not with bark or yard composts. Plant growth in soils containing a mixture of chicken manure compost with 20% vermicomposted pig wastes was similar to that of plants grown in the unfertilized control. Our results showed that vermicomposts have the potential for improving plant growth when added to greenhouse container media or soil. However, there seem to be distinct differences between specific vermicomposts and composts in terms of their nutrient contents, the nature of their microbial communities, and their effects on plant growth.

Throughout the study, the EC measured in wastewater-derived nutrient solutions, and also in the container substrate, were similar or close to those of the control treatment, although there were small to large differences among individual major nutrients. There was no sign of nutrient deficiency or toxicity symptoms to the plants. Small to moderate excesses in concentrations of SO(4), Na, and/or Cl were physiologically tolerable to the species.

Abstract:This study is aimed to examine the combined effects of biochar (BC) and cow manure organic fertilizer (CM) added to composted green waste (CGW) on the growth of Centaurea cyanus L. (cornflower) plants. With a constant amount of CGW, the research adjusted the addition ratios of BC as 0%, 15%, 2and 5%, and CM as 0%, 10%, 20%, respectively (the base of % is the volume of CGW). According to the above proportion, the growth media were prepared to culture cornflower seedlings. After a cultivation period of 180 days, growth indexes, ornamental indexes, and nutrient content of cornflower plants were measured to identify the optimal combination of BC and CM. The results showed that the additives BC and CM could significantly improve the plant growth and the nutrient content of cornflower plants, especially when added the two simultaneously. Compared with CGW without amendments, CGW amended with 15% BC and 10% CM increased shoots fresh weight, roots fresh weight, total nitrogen content, flower number, and total chlorophyll content of cornflower plants by 159.1%, 25.0%, 68.9%, 218.8%, and 26.4%, respectively. In conclusion, BC and CM addition could improve the quality and increase the agronomic value of CGW, and the CGW amended with 15% BC and 10% CM was an ideal growth media for cornflower plant.

Abstract:To achieve the resource utilization of garden waste, in this study, we used garden waste as the main raw material and conducted static composting with high-temperature aerobic treatment and forced ventilation by adding appropriate external additives. Our results showed that during the composting process, the pH was weakly alkaline, and the electrical conductivity was between 1.42 and 1.50 mS/cm. The E4/E6 (an important indicator of the quality or degree of condensation and aromatization of humic acid) gradually decreased, and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents increased. The germination index gradually rose and ultimately exceeded 80%. Treatment (T2) with a final C/N ratio of 25:1 and the addition of 0.3% bacterial agent resulted in the highest nutrient content and the best degree of compost maturity. All indicators met the requirements of the Chinese "Technical Requirements for Urban Landscape Waste Resource Recycling and Deep Processing (GB/T 40199-2021)". When using a composite substrate of garden waste and other horticultural substrates for planting, a membership function was executed for comprehensive evaluation. The V (T2):V (peat):V (vermiculite):V (vermiculite) = 135:135:30:00 substrate treatment resulted in optimal lettuce growth and quality. In summary, combining the compost products of garden waste with traditional cultivation substrates at a specific ratio shows favorable applicative prospects.

Effect of Vinegar Residue Compost Amendments on Cucumber Growth and Fusarium Wilt

Abstract:Fusarium wilt of cucumber caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum J. H. Owen is one of the major destructive soilborne diseases and results in considerable yield losses. Methyl bromide was once the most effective disease control method but has been confirmed as harmful to the environment. Using suppressive media as biological controls to assist crop growth is becoming popular. In this study, Fusarium wilt of cucumber was successfully controlled by a newly identified suppressive media: vinegar residue compost-amended media (vinegar residue compost mixed with peat and vermiculite in a 6:3:1 ratio (v/v) vinegar residue substrate (VRS). Greenhouse experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of VRS on the growth of cucumber seedlings and disease suppression. The control was peat/vermiculite (2:1, v/v). To identify the mixed media most suitable for the growth of plants and their suppressiveness indicators, we evaluated the biological characteristics of cucumber, the physicochemical and biochemical properties of the growth media, and the enzyme activities. Total organic C (C(org)), microbial biomass C (C(mic)), basal respiration (R(mic)), and enzyme (catalase, invertase, urease, proteinase, phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate) activities increased significantly after vinegar waste compost amendment. The compost media also showed a significantly positive effect on the growth of cucumber seedlings and the suppression of the disease severity index (DSI, 38% reduction). The cucumber rhizosphere population of F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum (FOC) was significantly lower in VRS than in the control. These results demonstrate convincingly that vinegar residue compost-amended media has a beneficial effect on cucumber growth and could be applied as a method for biological control of cucumber Fusarium wilt.
Enhanced vermicomposting of rice straw and pressmud with biogas slurry employing Eisenia fetida : Production, characterization, growth, and toxicological risk assessment

Abstract:The biogas plant plays a dual role: it directly provides energy and indirectly promotes organic farming through outlet slurry. However, agricultural biomass wastes such as rice straws (RS) and pressmud (PM), which can't be used as fertilizers on their own, were vermicomposted (60 days) with biogas slurry (BS), using earthworm, into four blends: T1 (BS, 100%) , T2 (3:2, BS: RS) , T3 (3:2, BS: PM), and T4 (3:1:1, BS: RS: PM) . The characterization, elemental analysis, and toxicological risk assessment of derived vermimanure were carried out using various analytical tools, such as an organic elemental analyzer such as CHNS, FT-IR, FESEM-EDXA, XPS , and ICP-OES. The pH, electrical conductivity, and C/N values were within 7.1–7.8, 3.2–6.0 dSm −1 , and 12–15, respectively, for all treatments. The proportions of N (38%), P (70%), K (58%), Mg (67%), Ca (42%), and ash (44%), increased significantly (P < 0.05) over the initial feedstocks . The ecological risks of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Cr) in all feedstocks were found to be under WHO-permitted levels. The growth performance of earthworms was also considerably higher (P < 0.05) over the control feedstock group. The analytical methods verified that feedstock T4 (3:1:1, BS: RS: PM) was more porous, containing NH 4 + , PO 4 3− , K + , and other nutrients. Pellets of all vermimanure groups keep 65–75% of the original volume. As well, when these pellets have been employed for agronomy and dispersed in the field, they will cause less dust than traditional or powdered compost or manure. In comparison to the control group, the synergistic approach of RS, PM, and BS in vermimanure significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced seed germination (83%), vigour index (42.5%), and decreased mean germination time by 27%. Furthermore, pot trials with Abelmoschus esculentus seed indicated that seedlings cultivated with 40% vermimanure of T4 (3:1:1, BS: RS: PM) mixed soil showed high growth in shoot, root, and plant yield.

Abstract:Green waste is gradually increasing as national forest city construction is promoted. Using green waste compost (GWC) products as seedling substrates is an effective way to achieve ecological sustainability. Nevertheless, some GWC are not always suitable for directly serving as seedling substrates due to their inappropriate physicochemical properties (i.e. undesirable porosity, high pH, high salinity, lower nutrient elements, etc.). This research aimed to evaluate how the addition of rice husk ash (RHA; 0, 2.5, 5%) and coco coir (CC; 0, 10, 20%) affected the physicochemical properties of GWC as well as its usage as a seedling substrate for Cucurbitaceae plants. The GWC was optimized by 2.5% RHA and 10% CC as the seedling substrate had the best physical and chemical properties (i.e. bulk density, porosity, water-holding capacity, pH, conductivity, and nutrient content). And the seedlings of cucumber and watermelon grew best under this seedling substrate in terms of germination energy and total biomass. Compared to GWC without RHA or CC amendments, GWC modified with 2.5% RHA and 10% CC enhanced the germination energy and total biomass of cucumber seedlings by 252% and 60%, respectively, and the germination energy and total biomass of watermelon seedlings increased by 61% and 67%, respectively. In consequence, the GWC that had been modified by 2.5% RHA and 10% CC was an excellent seedling substrate for Cucurbitaceae plants.

Internalizing and Externalizing Conditions in Adolescent Anorexia

Abstract:Objective: To identify the prevalence of internalizing and externalizing conditions in referred anorexic adolescents. Method: Child Behavior CheckList (CBCL) and Youth Self Report (YSR) were used to assess psychopathology: (a) in the global sample (43 adolescents); (b) in different subtypes of anorexia; (c) considering the timing of admission after the onset of the disease. Results: A high percentage of patients were found in the internalizing clinical range both at CBCL and YSR. Higher mean values were found in full syndromes both at CBCL and YSR, and in the binge-eating subtype only at the YSR. Subjects arrived within the first year of illness showed a less severe psychopathology. Conclusions: Adolescents with anorexia have high rates of internalizing psychopathology. The less severe psychopathology in adolescents arrived within the first year of illness shed light on discontinuity between anorexia and internalizing condition. On the basis of the psychopathological severity, three types of adolescent anorexia are proposed which could be of interest for therapeutic decisions.
Posidonia-Based Compost and Dredged Sediment in Growing Media Improve Tolerance and Nutrient Uptake in Ornamental Plants

Abstract:Because of the high costs and environmental impacts of peat and chemical fertilizers, the search for sustainable alternatives is increasing. Posidonia-based compost (C) has been widely tested as a growing media, while the combination with decontaminated dredged sediments (S) has only recently been studied. Moreover, little information is available on the relationship between plants and growing media. In this work, the suitability of growing media (CS) composed of 100% C, 70% C + 30% S and 30% C + 70% S were investigated compared to peat, for ornamental plants (Elaeagnus macrophylla, Photinia × fraseri and Viburnum tinus). Plant growth, physiological, nutritional and antioxidant responses were also investigated. The CS were compliant with current legislation on growing media. The Cu (+60%; +70%), Mg (+11%; +23%) and Ca (+66%; +72%) concentrations were higher in CS with 30% and 70% of S, respectively, than peat. The plants growing in CS had lower antioxidant activities than those on peat, suggesting a better plant tolerance to abiotic stress. In conclusion, the use of CS growing media, especially those with 30% and 70% of S, can be a valuable strategy to replace peat and reduce the application of fertilizers.

Improvement of two-stage composting of green waste by addition of eggshell waste and rice husks

Abstract:With the development of urban greening and increases in the human population, the production of green waste (GW) has been increasing in China. Although GW is biodegradable, its composting is difficult because of its low degradation rate. This study focuses on how addition of eggshell waste (ESW; at 0, 10, and 20%) and/or rice husks (RH; at 0, 15, and 25%) affects the two-stage composting of GW on the basis of temperature, bulk density, particle-size distribution, pH, nitrogen changes, carbon dioxide emission, organic matter degradation, humic substances, the activities of microorganisms and enzymes, and the phytotoxicity to germinating seeds. The combined addition of 10% ESW and 25% RH produced the highest quality compost in the shortest time. To produce a stable and mature product, two-stage composting of GW required 30 days without additives but only 20 days with the combined addition of 10% ESW and 25% RH.
CO-RECYCLING OF SEWAGE SLUDGE AND GARDEN WASTE BIOCHAR: AS A GROWING MEDIUM FOR LANDSCAPE PLANT

Abstract:Urban greening produces a large amount of garden waste, and the pyrolysis of garden waste into biochar is an effective waste management technology. Biochar has a large specific surface area and soil remediation ability. However, the knowledge about the co-recycling of sewage sludge and garden waste biochar to improve the growth of Monstera deliciosa needs to be highlighted. Therefore, we conducted a pot experiment by applying Ficus altissima litter-derived biochar (FB) at rates of 0, 1.5, and 3.0% (w/w, CK, FB1.5, and FB3) in soil amended with sewage sludge at 50% (w/w), to improve the soil properties, and further analyzed the effects of FB on growth and heavy metals (HMs) uptake of landscape plant M. deliciosa. Results showed in comparison with control setups, the addition of 3% FB treatment in sewage sludge amended soil improved the soil properties and significantly increased M. deliciosa dry weight (86.75%), root: shoot ratio (73.23%), N (99.44%), P (116.13%), K (124.40%), Pb (78.81%), and Cu (159.01%) accumulation respectively. In summary, FB3 treatment achieved the best effects in promoting plant growth and soil remediation. These findings revealed that sewage sludge and garden waste biochar could be recycled as amendments for poor acid soils under restoration, a sustainable development path for urban waste disposal.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urban forestry, the waste of landscaping has gradually increased. The use of green waste compost (GWC) as a substrate for forestry production has high ecological and economic value. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of coco coir (CC) and rice husk ash (RHA) on the physicochemical properties of GWC and the growth of cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. ) and watermelon ( Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) seedlings. When the amount of GWC was unchanged, CC (0%, 10%, 20%) and RHA (0%, 2.5%, 5%) with different proportions are added, respectively. This study found that the GWC optimized with 10% CC and 2.5% RHA was the best substrate. Compared with the control, the plant height of cucumber seedlings and watermelon seedlings increased by 133% and 62%, respectively; root length increased by 84% and 44%, respectively; the total dry weight increased by 68% and 44%, respectively; the total fresh weight increased by 45% and 59%, respectively; and the total chlorophyll content increased by 81% and 88%, respectively. In terms of plant growth morphological indicators, biomass accumulation and photosynthetic pigment content, cucumber and watermelon seedlings grew best under this substrate. In consequence, GWC modified by 2.5% RHA and 10% CC was an excellent substrate for cultivating Cucurbitaceous vegetable seedlings.

Abstract:The performance of garden waste on spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and chicken manure (CM) co-composting efficiency and humification is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of garden waste addition on SMS-CM co-composting physicochemical properties, humification process, and the spectral characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The results showed that garden waste improved the physicochemical properties of SMS-CM co-compost, the thermophilic period was advanced 2 days, the seed germination index increased by 30.2%, and the total organic carbon and total nitrogen content increased by 8.80% and 15.0%, respectively. In addition, garden waste increased humic substances (HS) and humic acid (HA) contents by 10.62% and 34.52%, respectively; the HI, PHA and DP increased by 31.53%, 43.19% and 55.53%, respectively; and the SUVA254 and SUVA280 of DOM also increased by 6.39% and 4.39%, respectively. In particular, HA content and DOM humification increase rapidly in the first 10 days. The increase of HA accounted for 52% of the total increase during composting. Fourier-transform infrared and two-dimensional correlation analysis further confirmed that garden waste could facilitate the degradation of organic molecules, including amino acids, polysaccharides, carboxyl groups, phenols, and alcohol, and contributed to the preferential utilization of carboxyl groups and polysaccharides and thus enhanced humification.
Effect of Garden Organic Waste Compost Used As Annual Flower Substrate

Abstract:In order to explore the feasibility of garden organic waste compost used as annual flower substrate,we prepared four kinds of annual flower substrate by using peat,garden organic waste compost and coir dust as main raw materials.The growth of Celosia civistata andSalvia splendens planted in the four substrates are studied in this paper.The results of the plant height,the crown width,the flower number and the longth of inflorescence show that the annual flower substrate can promote the growth of the annual flower,and improve their quality after adding garden organic waste compost.The results indicate that garden organic waste compost could be used as prepare annual flower substrate.

Abstract:This study investigated the effectiveness of Gleditsia sinensis pod powder (GSPP), coconut shell biochar (CSB), rice husk biochar (RHB) and their mixtures on vermicomposting of pig manure and wheat straw using Eisenia fetida. The results indicated that the addition of GSPP or/and CSB and RHB could greatly enhance the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes, as well as the activities of celluloses, protease, and alkaline phosphatase. However, the earthworm biomass was increased in the GSPP and/or CSB addition treatments but decreased in RHB addition treatments compared with the control. Compared with the control, addition of 4%GSPP+8%CSB significantly (P < 0.05) accelerated the degradation of organic matter and increased the concentration of nutrients (total N, P, K), NO3--N in final vermicompost. Germination and growth of tomato seedings were also higher (P < 0.05) in vermicompost produced with the addition of 4%GSPP+8%CSB than in control. Consequently, 4%GSPP+8%CSB addition was suggested as an efficient method to improve the vermicomposting of pig manure and wheat straw.

Abstract:Vermicomposting is an effective technology to transform organic wastes into organic fertilizers. However, a large amount of nitrogen will be lost through ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization during verimicomposting. Herein, we investigated the effects of mineral additives (diatomite, zeolite) and exogenous ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) ( Nitrosomonas europaea , Nitrosospira multiformis ) added individually or combinedly on the physicochemical changes, the conversion of nitrogen, and the resident microbial community succession during chicken manure and green waste co-vermicomposting. The results showed that the combined addition of AOB and mineral additives significantly improved vermicompost quality and maturity in terms of humus, carbon/nitrogen ratio, humic acid/fulvic acid ratio and germination index. Compared with the control, jointly adding AOB and mineral additives reduced NH 3 emissions by 65.72∼71.05 %, accelerated the conversion of NH 4 + -N to NO 3 − -N, increased total nitrogen content by 23.22∼25.21 %. The combination of AOB and mineral additives significantly increased the activities of ammonia monooxygenase, hydroxylamine oxidase, and nitrate oxidoreductase, and enhanced the amount of AOB community. Additionally, the combined addition of AOB and mineral additives increased bacterial richness and diversity, accompanied by increased relative abundances of Luteimonas , Cellvibrio , Saccharimonadales , and Pseudomonas . These microbial shifts were correlated with enhanced lignocellulose degradation, organic phosphate mineralization, and promotion of plant growth. Moreover, vermiompost-based growing media with mineral additives and AOB can significantly promote the growth of purple cabbage as compared to the vermicompost without additives. Overall, the synergistic use of AOB and mineral additives (diatomite, zeolite) was recommended as a favorable approach for reducing nitrogen losses and improving the efficiency of chicken manure and green waste vermicomposting. This study offers a novel approach to mediate nitrogen transformation processes and reduce nitrogen loss.

Abstract:A lab-scale composting experiment was carried out using vegetable and flower stalks waste to study the effectiveness of ligno-cellulolytic microorganisms (LCMs) obtained from the previous isolation on composting process, especially on enhancement of biodegradation rate of these organic materials. The addition of LCMs to compost showed promised to be a valuable asset by rendering timely benefits in efficiency, maturity, and quality of the composting. This was evidenced by a significant increase of temperature, O-2 consumption and CO2 emission, and population density of LCMs in compost mass compared with that of biotic (addition of culture of horse feces) and abiotic (1% molasses amendment) treatments, as well as control trial. The phytotoxicity assay showed that the substrate became mature after 60 days' composting. The LCMs inoculation enhanced the biodegradation of the composting materials as evidenced by an increasing screening ratio (1.2cm sieve pore) of 34.5% in the treated trail, compared with that of control, which elucidated that big advantage of adding selected inoculants over other treatment, and screening ratio is a reasonable index to compare the quality of different compost. However, the inoculation seemed to have no significant effect on the moisture content, pH, and the final organic carbon of the composting materials.
Effects of semi-decomposed weeds as substrate on plant growth, antioxidant capacity, and leaf nutrition of plum trees

Abstract:Sustainable practices are inevitable requirements for modern agriculture. Incorporating weed waste into an organic substrate is one of such sustainable agricultural practice. We aimed to investigate whether semi-decomposed, aboveground weed biomass can be used as a substrate for plums. "Qingcui" plums were planted in boxes with semi-composted weeds, and garden soil without composted weeds was used as a control. Plant branch characteristics, leaf antioxidant capacity, leaf nutrition, and numbers of opening flowers and bearing fruits were analyzed. The results showed that treatment with semi-composted weed treatment significantly increased the stem diameter, effective branch number, and effective branch angle. The contents of the reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione, and the levels of total antioxidant capacity and catalase were significantly higher in semi-composted weeds than in the control group. The macroelement content in the semi-composted weed group was higher than that of the control group, but the microelement contents did not show any significant differences. However, the trace elements and heavy metals showed heterogeneous changes. The Σ DOP of macroelements, microelements, and trace elements in the weed-compost treatment were larger than that in the control. The chlorophyll content in the weed-compost group was significantly higher than that in the control during the leaf abscission period. The leaf weight per area was significantly higher than that of the control, but the growth time was longer. The numbers of total opening flowers and fruit were higher in the semi-composted weed group than in the control group. We demonstrated that semi-composted weeds as substrates have beneficial effects on plum branch characteristics, leaf antioxidant capacity, and generative growth. However, it increases the degree of nutritional imbalance and extends growth time.
