Abstract:The modernist period ushered forth numerous scientific and philosophical theories that had a notable influence on art, literature, psychology, and philosophy. Discoveries such as Einstein's general theory of relativity inspired theologians, philosophers, and psychologists to focalize new concepts of self, identity, time, reality, and human experience. These shifts in contemporary human understanding developed in concurrence with increased global travel and intellectual exchange between Western and Eastern countries. As a result, writers, philosophers, and artists became more interested in Buddhism and other Eastern philosophical beliefs. Virginia Woolf, while being a self-proclaimed atheist, was deeply influenced by Eastern philosophy and well versed in contemporary scientific theories. Drawing on literary and biographical criticism of Virginia Woolf, I trace the intersections of Eastern philosophical beliefs and Western scientific theories through the stream of consciousness narration of Mrs. Dalloway by analyzing both what and how things are experienced by individual characters. In the novel, the integration of each character's stream of consciousness fabricates a dissonant medium in which singular moments in the present time are experienced through the minds of multiple characters, while they simultaneously navigate past spans of time within their individual narrative consciousness. Through the analysis of narrative form and narrative consciousness in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, it is possible to track the impact of Eastern philosophies and Western scientific theories in the novel's exploration of external and internal perceptions of reality. Abstract:As a representative writer of modernist literature and feminist literature in the 20th century, Virginia Woolf's works profoundly reflect the complexity of modern society and the unique perspective of women. Through the analysis of works such as Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando and A Room of One's Own, this paper explores Woolf's narrative innovation under the trend of modernist thought and her redefinition of gender roles. The study found that Woolf skillfully combined modernist techniques such as stream of consciousness with feminist ideas to show the themes of gender fluidity and self-exploration. However, despite her breakthroughs in narrative style and character creation, the complexity of Woolf's works also brought challenges in understanding and acceptance. This paper summarizes her achievements and limitations in modernist aesthetics and emphasizes the important influence of these works on modern literature and feminist theory.

Abstract:The present paper attempts to closely study Virginia Woolf’s Orlando in terms of Judith Butler’s concepts of gender, performativity, and agency. Woolf examines women, their struggles and positions in literary history, and their needs for independence. Themes in her works consist of gender relations, class hierarchy, and the consequences of war. In most of her novels, she moves away from the use of plot and character and, instead, emphasizes the psychological aspects of her characters. In Orlando, the protagonist lives through centuries and Woolf allows her character to transform into a female halfway during the novel. The novel is directly engaged in the women’s position and mentality through the lines, dialogues, and events. The principal question of the present study focuses on the perspectives through which gender is presented and the way it could be observed in relation to Butler’s theory of gender as performance. The current survey is further concerned with the angles through which the novel reflects gender troubles and identity crisis of the women, conventionally defined as a minor category, according to Judith Butler’s poststructuralist approach to the analysis of identity. Consequently, there is a confluence between the development of Woolf’s female characters in the novel and Butler’s critical notion concerning the subject’s attempts to present performativity in the form of an active agent.
Feminine Writing and Feminist Criticism in Virginia Woolf——Taking Mrs Dalloway and A Room of One's Own as Example

Abstract:A lot of research has been devoted to the stream of consciousness novels of Virginia Woolf while it is to be explored how she is of a starting point of "feminine writing" and feminist criticism.This paper takes Mrs.Dalloway as an example to show how the form corresponds to the content especially the inner feelings of a woman.It also traces the tradition of feminist criticism back to Woolf's A Room of One's Own.Meanwhile it points out that her attempt at winning women's suffrage and her involvement with organizations like "the Women's Cooperative Guild" has enhanced the discussion of the feminine social status.

Abstract:Gender is a socially constructed code, which considers all the behaviors, actions and roles. The first decades of the 20th century witnesses the emergence of a new phenomenonknown as gender consciousness. Feminists have argued for an understanding of femininity and masculinity as culturally required concepts. Gender role theory posits that boys and girls learn the appropriate behavior from their families, and the overall culture they grow up with. De Beauvoir has drawn the borderline for the role given to women in different cultures and maintains that no biological, psychological, or economic fate determines the figure that the human female presents in society. She further agrees that it is civilization as a whole that produces women.At first sight, Virginia Woolf’s Orlando: A Biography, seems to be a straightforward argument for androgyny. Nevertheless, the novel is about the interchangeability of his / her experience as man and woman, following the Freudian doctrine that although the sexes are different but they intermix. The book also follows a queer discourse as it sets masculine, feminine, male and female in circulation in order to shift their binary fixity. This paper focuses on the concept of gender identity prevalent in Woolf’s Orlando: A Biography.

Abstract:This chapter examines how Virginia Woolf, particularly her feminist literary manifesto A Room of One’s Own , shaped the fictions of the contemporary avant-garde Chinese feminist writer and essayist Chen Ran, whose works depict Chinese women’s subjective and introspective experiences and desires from three perspectives. First, Woolf’s idea of a room of one’s own lays the theoretical and metaphorical feminist basis for Chen Ran’s works. Next, Woolf’s idea of androgyny inspires Chen Ran’s concept of ‘gender-transcendent consciousness’. Third, Woolf’s call for women’s writing – in particular her expression ‘Chloe liked Olivia’ – becomes the literary source and inspiration for Chen Ran’s notion of sisterly affection, which turns out to be an excellent example of gender-transcendent consciousness. Strongly influenced by Woolf, Chen Ran has created many new images of Chinese women with rebellious and insightful outlooks such as the perspectives of Yun Nan from ‘Breaking open’ (2002) and Ni Niuniu from A Private Life .

Abstract:L’articolo si propone di delineare un’analisi comparativa tra Orlando (1928) di Virginia Woolf e How to Be Both (2014) di Ali Smith. In particolare, si intende dimostrare come l’opera di Smith rielabori in modo creativo il romanzo di Woolf, andando così ad incarnare e ad esprimere con vividezza il concetto di ‘mente androgina’ teorizzato dalla stessa autrice. Ciò avviene attraverso la rimozione dei confini temporali tra passato e presente, l’ambiguità sessuale delle protagoniste e, soprattutto, attraverso un paradigma letterario capace di indagare la necessità di un’interazione reciproca tra autrici e lettori, e di un più ampio dialogo tra il testo letterario e le altre influenze artistiche e culturali con le quali instaura un imprescindibile rapporto dialettico.

Abstract:The present paper aims at concentrating on Judith Butler's theory of gender as performance and how Virginia Woolf challenges the assumptions of heterosexuality in Virginia Woolf's Orlando (1992). Woolf rebels against the traditional view of gender as two separate categories by presenting Orlando as an androgynous and bisexual character. Orlando's transformation from male to female and exhibition of the characteristics of both feminist and masculinity expose how gender norms are socially instituted. Woolf portrays Orlando's attraction to both men and women. He/she loves Sasha regardless of what changes her body undergoes, but he/she marries Shelmerdine because he/she is bisexual. Woolf also shows clothing as signifiers of the social construction of gender and how characters flout this convention by using cross dressing.

Abstract:In Night and Day and The Years , Woolf employs the figure of the suffragist/suffragette to think through problems of feminist history and to imagine feminism’s temporality. Extending work by Sowon Park, Naomi Black, and Clara Jones on Woolf’s relation to the suffrage movement, this chapter places Woolf’s novelistic meditations on suffrage in close dialogue with Elizabeth Robins’s earlier movement novel, The Convert , in order to explore what Woolf can offer us in a rereading of the suffrage archive. Woolf’s careful assessment of movement feminism, and even her ambivalence regarding her activist heroines, invites us to notice complexity, and even ambivalence, in the work of her feminist precursor.

Abstract:This paper examines intertextuality between Virginia Woolf’s Orlando and Yann Martel’s Self, focusing on the way in which each text grapples with undoing gender essentialism. Despite being set in different times and spaces, both novels demonstrate common threads: the protagonist challenges binary gender norms and heteronormativity; their gender is unintentionally transformed. In this regard, Martel’s novel should be understood as a successor to Woolf’s Orlando, as it is advertised as “A Modern-Day Orlando” by the publisher. Strangely enough, however, both texts have rarely been examined together. Thus, I argue that Orlando and Self resonate with one another as they explore gender and sexual fluidity through their main characters while simultaneously problematizing fixed categories of sex, gender, and sexuality, along with language derived from binary and heterosexual assumptions. Woolf and Martel experiment and break down rigid distinctions of gender, language, and even literary genres by blending biographical or autobiographical forms with other literary styles in their respective novels. Gender nonconformity practiced by the two characters illustrates that gender is performativity and one’s self is constantly negotiated through interactions with others. Hence, this paper interrogates how Woolf and Martel envision gender non-conforming subjects’ livable lives to demonstrate the politics of queer life.

Abstract:This essay examines a preoccupation in early twentieth century literature and philosophy with the limits of describing first-person experience in language. Reading Virginia Woolf’s novels together with the philosophy of Bertrand Russell and William James, I argue that the indescribable in modernism is not so much a sublime beyond comprehension but rather the particularities of feelings that we ourselves know too well. These idiosyncratic experiential textures escape full expression by words that are inevitably general, but I suggest that Woolf stages this descriptive limit by exploiting a set of nondescriptive terms, whose distinctive features are elucidated by the remarks of James and Russell. The aim of this paper is to trace a less familiar intellectual history of literary modernism by highlighting its connections to early analytic philosophy, while at the same time working across literature and philosophy in a way that does not take recourse to the model of a “lens” or an influence study, but that instead examines the two fields” shared preoccupation with similar problems, which they elaborate in distinct ways.

Abstract:This article responds to an important development in the study of the presentation of social minds by investigating Virginia Woolf’s portrayal of consciousness in the light of a key conversational pattern: adjacency pairs. Woolf employs frequent shifts in point of view in her texts, the result of which is that different characters’ streams of consciousness are interwoven together. This narrative design allows the text to probe into the relationship between different minds. Drawing on findings in discourse analysis, this article demonstrates that the way in which characters’ viewpoints are juxtaposed resembles paired actions in conversation and that the intersubjectivity underlying the format of adjacency pairs is also mapped on the juxtaposition of different minds. It thereby argues that this sequencing format functions as an effective linguistic mechanism for rendering the social interactive quality of consciousness in Woolf’s narrative.

Abstract:Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf is well-acclaimed for its almost non-intrusive portrayal of characters’ state of mind. Many studies approach it from biographical, socio-historical, philosophical, and other non-linguistic perspectives, and most linguistic investigations deal with illustrative examples of a single linguistic device in this novel. Few are concerned with the presence of particular linguistic patterns that explain how the intricate flow of thought is successfully depicted. This paper offers a detailed elaboration on the criteria for categorizing thought presentation in Leech& Short’s model and distinguishes cases of ambiguity. A case study of Mrs. Dalloway’s flower purchase scene illustrates how different types of thought presentation along with different reporting clauses are used to convey the variation in the character’s mental state and the negotiation between her inner voice and the outside world.

Abstract:This book provides a fascinating account of rooms in selected works by Virginia Woolf. Casting them as spaces which are at once material, textual and emotional, the volume shows Woolf’s rooms to be consistently connected to wider geographies of modernity and therefore central to her writing of gender, class, empire and the nation. The discussion moves “in and out of rooms,” from the focus on travel in Woolf’s debut novel, to the archival function of built space and literary heritage in Night and Day, the university as a male space of learning in Jacob’s Room, the iconic A Room of One’s Own and its historical readers, interior space as spatial history in The Years, and rooms as loci of memory in her unfinished memoir. Zink masterfully shows the spatial formation of rooms to be at the heart of Woolf’s interweaving of the political and the aesthetic, revealing an understanding of space as dynamic and relational.
Re-evaluating Woolf’s Androgynous Mind

Abstract:Woolf introduced her theory of the androgynous mind in A Room of One’s Own (1929) and the concept has caused contention among critics ever since. Often worried by the word and its binary baggage, critics have either loved or hated Woolf’s ideal state for a creative mind which alternates between male/masculine and female/feminine. Lovers of the theory, including Carolyn Heilbrun and Nancy Topping Bazin, read androgyny as a balance and union between opposites (“the evanescent masculine and the eternal feminine”) which gives a satisfying pattern to life. However, others have read Woolf’s vision of androgyny as variously: an escape from the body (Elaine Showalter and Lisa Rado), an avoidance of key feminist issues (Elaine Showalter), a “sexist myth in disguise” perpetuating the phallogocentrism it seeks to deconstruct (Daniel Harris, Barabara Charlesworth Gelpi), a vision of selfdestructive narcissism (Julia Kristeva, Francette Pacteau) or merely as an insipid form of homogeneity that “lacks zest and energy.” However, Woolf distilled a purer essence from the concept than contemporary critics tend to do. Androgyny, for Virginia Woolf, was a theory that aimed to offer men and women the chance to write without consciousness of their sex – the result of which would ideally result in uninhibited creativity. Whether she succeeded in this aim will be the study of the following essay.

Abstract:The present study attempts to read Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Zoya Pirzad’s I Turn off the Lights, which is translated into English under the title of Things We Left Unsaid, in terms of the Bakhtinian theory of voice. This paper carries out a comparative study of these novels in order to specify the differences between the voices existing in the novels written by two women writers from two different cultures. For that purpose Bakhtin’s conceptualizations and theories on Heteroglossia and Polyphony are focused upon. Although these two novels have been analyzed by variety of frameworks related to different critics, the study on the characters identity in the light of Bakhtinian theoretical concepts seems new and the comparativeness side of the research adds to the importance of the present work. By comparing these two works, some cultural differences and similarities regarding both women writers are being revealed. It seems that the authorial intentions towards the role of the characters stem from the similar viewpoints although they have been created in different social and cultural discourses. In the novels written by two writers, the process of identity creation of each character which is the product of various existing voices that are linked to one another through the social nature of language, is examined and observed in the light of Bakhtinian theory.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate the interplay between narrative style, gender and fashion within Woolf’s Orlando. This study delves into how Woolf’s use of a biographical narrative approach in a fantasy novel facilitates the exploration of gender stereotypes and their subsequent blurring. In this regard, through a meticulous analysis of Orlando, Woolf ingeniously employs the biographical style to transcend traditional literary boundaries. This stylistic choice allows for a deliberate blurring of reality and fantasy, prompting a transformative narrative experience. Within this narrative framework, the significance of fashion and attire emerges as essential tools for challenging conventional gender norms: clothing serves as a powerful vehicle for destabilising preconceived notions of gender. By situating Orlando’s fluid identity and evolving gender presentation within the context of clothing choices, the novel portrays the malleability of gender constructs. The blurring of genders is skilfully intertwined with the blurring of reality, forging a narrative tapestry that offers profound insights into societal perceptions of identity. In conclusion, this paper illuminates how Woolf’s novel enables a thoughtprovoking exploration of gender stereotypes, ultimately advocating for a more inclusive and fluid understanding of identity through the lens of fashion and attire.

Abstract:The feminist movement has grown increasingly strong as social civilization has advanced and human self-consciousness has surfaced. A Room of One’s Own, a 1929 essay by Virginia Woolf, is one of the feminist manifestos that still informs contemporary literature and feminist thought. This article utilizes feminist theories of language, gender, and power in conjunction with critical reading and textual analysis of specific novel sections to elucidate the relevance and meaning of these narrative devices. The study’s conclusions imply that Woolf’s use of language and style is essential to her feminist message and that it challenges patriarchal power systems and conventional gender roles. Overall, this research shows how feminist stylistic analysis may be applied to literary works by discussing the literary narrative techniques and the feminist ideas of A Room of Own’s Own, thus giving women the tools and freedom to use their words to change the world, and inspiring and helping future generations to pursue gender equality.
